Not Wangxian swooping in like the heroes they are

Other than them being literal heroes, what i love most about this scene:

Wangxian just had another disagreement / fight about wwx’s practice of demonic cultivation but the moment people are in danger they are at once partners in crime and life again. Of course we expect wwx to be absolutely enraged by what’s happening but look at Lan Wangji’s face, Mr. Hanguang Jun. Its the shared purpose, ideals and sense of justice.

One of my absolute favorite fanfic tropes is what I call "the only exception":

Character A is a well-known hermit among their friend group and would rather die than go out with you. But then you look at Character's B Instagram and see Character A in almost every picture because they keep trying new cafes together, going to movies, visiting museums, and doing craft lessons.

Character A is the only person in their friend group capable of cooking, while their other friends are walking fire hazards. Because of this, they are permanently banned from the kitchen and Character A will chop into stew anyone who dares to step foot into their territory. But then you woke up from a nap and stumbled into the kitchen to get a glass of water only to notice Character B sitting on the counter swinging their legs and stealing pieces of carrots from the cutting board. Character A lets them do that without a single word, only mumbling about Character B losing their appetite from all the snacks.

Character A is not much of a talker and would avoid conversations at all costs. If they have no other choice, Character A will simply nod or shake their head when necessary. But then you see them in Character B's company, the biggest chatterbox imaginable, talking Character A's ears off, and they not only don't mind it but also answer back, indulging in the conversation.

Probably the most popular one - Character A doesn't like physical touch and is known to actively avoid it from his friends and family. Getting to hold their hand is like a reward, and hugging them is the ultimate win in life. But then you notice Character B laying their head on Character A's shoulder without being pushed away. When Character B landed in Character A's lap, the latter simply adjusted the phone so they both could see the screen. If Character B hugged Character A from behind, the latter would simply lean into the touch.

And the best part? When you dare to ask if they're dating or not, the answer is always either "What? No!" or "Are you dumb?"

I don’t think enough ppl have capitalized upon the fact that Lan Wangji genuinely thinks Wei Wuxian is pretty much the most wonderful person in the world. Like jaw-drop-in-awe of him. There’s a reverence to Lan Wangji’s love, just as there is for Wei Wuxian’s.

By the way, has anyone else noticed the similarities between these three ships?

BECAUSE I HAVE AND I CANNOT PRETEND TO BE NORMAL ABOUT IT ANYMORE

(unhinged gay screaming and rambling below the cut)

You know, "serious, deadpan gay has their heart melted by a nerdy, chaotic disaster bisexual with childhood trauma." Alternatively, "not enemies but initially on opposing sides before sun-coded breaks down moon-coded's walls and then subsequently become best friends that are closer to each other than most other people."

To start, the similarities between Lan Zhan, Cas, and Shouto:

Deadpan, cold, aloof, serious, intimidating, takes things literally

Initially driven by rigidly-defined principles/goals before having their world view altered by the other half of their ship, which in turn causes them to become more uncertain of themselves and what they want, but recognizes that they are happier and better-off for it now than they were before

They were raised in an unforgivingly strict environment where there was no margin for error, causing them to become cold and jaded in a way that covers up the fact that, at their core, they are fundamentally kind and good in a way that they don't even realize but desperately want to be

Socially awkward introverts that hate everyone but This One Person

Come across as very intimidating but are actually very soft

Surprisingly good with kids

Familial issues/trauma

They can also be identified as the "fell first" half of the relationship, and most likely fell within one of their first few interactions with their love interest

Youngest siblings

Has an obsession with a specific animal (Cas likes bees, Lan Zhan likes rabbits, Shouto likes cats)

The undisputed powerhouse of their respective series that everyone recognizes as one of, if not the strongest members of the cast

Everyone thinks they're super wise and mature, but they are actually the pettiest bitches you will ever meet

Gay and entirely obsessed with This One Person

They all have small, private conflicts about allowing themselves to Feel. They were raised to compartmentalize, repress, and conceal-don't-feel; push everything down until you are perfect and untouchable. Then their love interest comes along and upends everything and finally allows them to Feel, but because they were taught to repress everything, they don't entirely know how to do that yet, so, with the help of their love interest, they slowly heal and learn how to be more human and less like the image of untouchable, god-like perfection they were raised to be (metaphorically for lwj and Shouto, but literally in Cas's case)

(I was gonna say, "they all belong to the mile-high tall club", but then I realized that only applies to lwj and Shouto because Cas is technically shorter than Dean, lol. Though, I guess you could argue that his true form (without his vessel) is taller, but, like, c'mon)

Incredibly dry, niche sense of humor that's only really funny to This One Person

Lan Zhan and Shouto both have mothers that they love, but who were forced into an unwanted, loveless marriage by their father that led them to be increasingly isolated from their children until resulting in a psychotic break that ultimately destroyed them and drove their husbands to imprison them (Rei in the mental hospital and Lan Zhan's mother in the Jingshi)

Unrepentantly earnest and blunt with their thoughts

Completely whipped for their partner

Now! To the disasters! Wei Ying, Dean, and Izuku:

Friendly, excitable, extroverted, sunshine-y/always smiling

Near-unparalleled geniuses in their fields of interest that like to experiment and test things

Childhood trauma

The powers that be have decided that they are undesirable in some way or another, that they are a waste, disposable, an acceptable sacrifice to make in the grand scheme of things. They have all struggled with feelings of worthlessness, and have all arguably struggled with self-hatred at least once in their lives, and even if they don't actively hate themselves anymore, by and large, they do not recognize that they have value just as they are, that the only value they have lies in what they can do (or sacrifice) for others. None of them have much in the way of self-esteem or any sense of self-worth.

At their core, they want to save people.

They all have themes of being different from the negative characatures that society tried to make them into.

Extremely talkative and come across as annoying to most people

Likes kids

Reckless and jump head-first into danger at the drop of a hat

Carry feelings of guilt, have a tendency to cast blame onto themselves, takes responsibility for things that aren't their fault

They want so badly to do good, and they choose to be kind in a world that deemed them unworthy of it

Good relationships with their respective maternal figures/caretakers (Dean and Izuku with their actual mothers, and Wei Ying with Yanli)

Wise-cracking smartasses that give off dumbass energy

Bisexual

Inadvertently ends up adopting a small army of children

Deflects their traumatic experiences with jokes

Has that one female best friend that is definitely a lesbian (wwx and Wen Qing, Izuku and Ochako, and Dean and Charlie)

"Oh my God, (Cas, Lan Zhan, Shouto)! You can't just say things like that!"

They are the caretakers, the protectors, but they so rarely let themselves be cared for by others. Their respective love interests are some of the few people they feel comfortable being truly vulnerable with and will let take care of them

Unhealthy Coping Mechanisms™

In particular, I noticed a lot of uncanny similarities between Wangxian and Destiel specifically, especially in the themes and arcs that exist in both the couples and the individuals

...look, I know JC's hands aren't clean, he's done some super shitty stuff to probably innocent people over the years because of his seething anger at Wei Ying...BUT I still love him because I know ultimately he loved Wei Ying through and through. The greater his love, the more painful the perceived betrayal. His anger and the resulting actions from it may not forgivable, but it's completely understandable and I'm sure he'll hurt for a long time over it.

It was unexpected for everyone, when Wei Ying woke up in the middle of being held to drink some water with a rug, helped by his brother.

He blinked weakly and looked up at Jiang Cheng with a relief that gave the younger boy the chills.

"Good to have you back with the living ones, dumbass," Jiang WanYin said, loud enough to be heard through the lifting fog inside Wei WuXian's brain and also be heard by the Jiang disciples that had accompanied him in the task of retrieving Wei WuXian from the cave.

Wei WuXian let go a grumble and fell back on the floor, letting a couple of moments pass by before he was startling everyone around when he sat back up in a hurry, looking almost frantic.

"'An Zhan?" He asked, his voice strained with feelings.

On cue, Lan WangJi rose from where he had been gathering his strength back attempting to meditate, and it was attempting because he was way too conflicted to accomplish that. "I am here, Wei Ying," he called back.

Wei WuXian's face brightened when he turned around to where Lan WangJi was standing, a wide smile that warmed WangJi's ears to the burning point.

"Lan Zhan!" He called again, scrambling to his feet. When he wobbled, Lan WangJi was at his side in a blink, helping him stand. Wei WuXian smiled at him again, even when Lan WangJi was giving him a stern glare. "Lan Zhan," he said again, softer, "I thought you'd leave as soon as we left that cave. I'm glad you didn't."

WangJi's glare intensified a hundred times, before he looked to the side, clearly embarrassed. Jiang WanYin was a step closer to stop his annoying brother from well, annoying the Lan Heir, when said teenager nodded, "mh."

Wei WuXian beamed.

Jiang WanYin grimaced.

"Hey, Lan Zhan?" Wei WuXian began again, his hands timidly holding onto Lan WangJi's forearm where he supported Wei WuXian so he wouldn't fall over. WangJi gave him attention with a glance, Wei WuXian took that to keep talking, "I... Wa-wangxian is a really good song."

Lan WangJi gasped audibly, letting go of Wei WuXian's arm before grabbing him again as if he couldn't decide what to do with his hand, with the information that Wei WuXian had just provided, or with Wei WuXian in general.

"What song is that?" Jiang WanYin asked, raising an eyebrow. Wei WuXian smiled at him and sighed dramatically.

"Ah, you see! It's my new favorite song ever, A-Cheng. It's so pretty... so gorgeous, so good to hear! I really... fancy it! I like it, I would like to hear it everyday. That's how much I've liked it!" He emphasized every word, squeezing Lan WangJi's forearm in the process.

Lan WangJi's head was down, as if he was staring at their feet, ears incredibly red.

"Wei Ying..." Came weakly from the boy, making Wei WuXian laughs softly.

"Ah, Lan Zhan. I'm being honest here. What do you think? Would you play it for me everyday?" He asked tilting his head to the side, in hopes of getting a look at Lan WangJi's face.

"How could he play the song for you everyday?! Don't be ridiculous, Wei WuXian!" Jiang WanYin admonished his brother.

After a beat, Lan WangJi spoke again, "Mh, ridiculous," he agreed. But he lacked the heat behind the insult, making Jiang Cheng frown further. What was wrong with these two?!

"Ah," Wei Ying noticed, "that's not a no, Lan Zhan," and he pointed it out. Lan WangJi tried to make a step back only to stumble with his own feet. Wei WuXian was there, still holding onto him and helping him to stay standing. "No need to fall for me like that! Lan Zhan!"

Jiang WanYin made a disgusted face, waiting for Lan WangJi to snap at his brother like he always did during their lessons at the Cloud Recesses, but that never came. Instead, all that could be heard in response was a weak "Wei Ying..." from the Lan Heir, and a loud laughter from Wei WuXian, who seemed entirely too happy in the ridiculous situation.

Honestly, Jiang Cheng thought, he didn't wanna know.
