Ok, so, this is probably ridiculous, and I can't believe I have a House of the Dragon theory before it even airs (I can barely believe I have a HOTD theory at all), but...
Since the release of The Princess and the Queen in 2013, and through everything published about the Dance of the Dragons since then (TRP, TWOIAF, F&B), it's known that Daemon and Aemond Targaryen have a lot of parallels. Besides the most obvious point of their names (just move the D, lol), they're both hotheaded, vengeful, kinslayers, brutal and ruthless, excellent swordsmen, more martial and physically active than their kingly older brother who they were nevertheless devoted to... culminating in their final showdown in the Battle Over the Gods Eye, the aging older model vs the would-be "new hotness". Though a major difference is that fandom tends to treat Aemond as far more of a pretentious wannabe, a bad Xerox copy with his marysueish sapphire eye and ooh so hardcore dialogue, generally disliked while Daemon is beloved (or at least opinions are far more split), the Darkstar to his Oberyn.
As for HOTD -- though we have yet to see how normie fandom and newbies will react to these two characters once they both start doing their thing, one thing I've noticed from the trailers is that most new people just cannot tell them apart. I have a friend (with no interest in ASOIAF but who's seen the ads multiple times during his shows) who thought Aemond was Matt Smith in an eyepatch. And Matt and Ewan Mitchell do look remarkably and surprisingly alike.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That same flat square jaw from the front but cut cheekbones from the side, similar noses and lips, even when in costume the same lack of eyebrows for goodness sake... Well, maybe this is just highly similar Targaryen wigs and makeup, maybe it's just good casting, following the evident show-Targaryen family look. Maybe the showrunners just chose a young actor who looks a bit like Matt Smith and costumed him similarly as a way to hammer home the parallels between the characters. But. What if this casting and costuming means something... more?
We know that one of the in-world text sources of the Dance is the scurrilous Testimony of Mushroom, which claimed that Alicent was no virgin when married, having previously slept with Viserys and even senile King Jaehaerys (which I most thoroughly doubt, that's just Mushroom's typical slander). We know that Otto Hightower detested Daemon, all the sources concurring, if no reason given except perhaps "Lord Flea Bottom"'s known behavior. We know that per interviews etc, in the show Daemon is said to have a complex relationship with his brother Viserys, loving yet jealous. We know that, well, HBO is HBO, as bad as Mushroom, and loves to add sexy scandalous scenes for water-cooler and social media buzz, even if they're claiming it won't be so bad and blatant as GOT with HOTD. So... what if, in the show, there's some kind of... incident, between Daemon and Alicent, a seduction or maybe, um, not the greatest level of consent, and then a little bit of time and Alicent tells Viserys she's pregnant again? Perhaps there won't be anything overt, nothing ever said, just implied via nasty looks and snatches of dialogue... but what if? There's no Maury Povich or DNA testing in Westeros...
Mind you, a big flaw in this theory is that in the books, Daemon was absent from court from late 105 to 111 AC, either on Dragonstone or in the Stepstones, and Aemond was born in 110 AC. But we already know that HOTD's adaptation is playing a bit with timelines, making Alicent and Rhaenyra about the same age whereas Alicent was 9 years older in the books. We don't yet know how they might tweak the ages of their children -- though from the trailers and behind-the-scenes videos, Aemond seems to be far closer to the ages of Jacaerys and Lucerys (in the Vhagar incident scenes they all look 10-12-ish, rather than 10, 6, and 5, and the actors are 12, 13, and 8). And imagine-- the parallels (not just between Daemon and Aemond, but Alicent and Rhaenyra), the greek tragedy levels of irony... it would be amazing.
So. I suppose we'll see. This could be completely crack, based on nothing more than the somewhat similar appearances of actors cast as uncle and nephew. But if it does go down that way, if show-Daemon has a son he could never ever acknowledge... don't say I didn't warn you.

HOTD men with a big chested s/o
Tumblr media
- He would honestly try not to stare at your chest when you wear a dress that shows even the tiniest amount of cleavege.
- Aemond would try beeing respectful while you're in public, but gods, he goes FERAL when you're in your dress that has almost half your tits out for display. The prince would be staring,he would try to pay attention as you speak,he really would. It's just the sight in front of him is way to much for his prying eyes.
- Now of course, people would talk about you, about how you can be so 'indecent', he saw how you didn't care, but that didn't stop him from glaring at the said people, sending shivers down their spine. No one cares speaking I'll of you while your husband is around, unless they have a death wish.
- while you're in your private chambers, Aemond loves nothing more than laying his head on your chest, hearing your heart beat is so soothing for the white haired men, sometimes he amuses you. He loves how you run your hand trough his straight hair looks, massaging that right spot that gets him sleepy.
Now for the nsfw part 😊
- How he loves ,when you're on top, seeing your boobs move with your body as you ride him, he thinks it gets him even harder.
- He'd grope and fiddle with your nipples, pulling some sweet sounds out of your mouth.
- Occasionally, he'd take one in his mouth, while carefully paying attention to the other with his long slender fingers, twisting at your nipple while his mouth sucks ,and bites at the soft flesh. Your hands gripping at his hair as you move up and down his cock, soft moans leaving your lips.
- He just loves it when your all bare for him to see,to touch, to please.
Tumblr media
- This man has no shame in whatsoever. When he sees you ,even before beeing weeded,in that dress, to tight for your chest, boobs almost spilling out...well he's a dead man. You can have the most serious conversation with him,but his eyes would not look away from your chest. He doesn't even try to.
- You're lucky if he's in a good mood, cause lord, he sometimes can't resist the urges, and grabs your titty,in public. You can just hope no one saw this happen, cause your face is already red. And that shit eating grin that adorns his face once he did it,you just can't wait to scold him once you're all alone. Little do you know,it turns him on to see you scolding him, that serious expression on your face, tho of course he doesn't look at your face ,no ,his eyes are on your chest ,that happens to be right in front of him.
- He'd hear some men talk, when they believe he's not around. They would say inappropriate things about you, slut shame you,and oh boy. If you didn't know Daemon you'd think he was exaggerating, but the damage those men endured, well they sure will know to keep their tongue the next time(if they get to keep one).
- The prince could care less if someone else than him was staring, cause at the end of the day,he's the one who gets to fuck you,and noone else.
*NSFW
- Now when we're getting to the good part? Oh boy. He loves fucking you from behind ,one hand on your waist keeping you tightly as he pushes in and out of you, making you a moaning mess all for him. The other hand playing with your nipple, rubbing it and pinching it, drawing little squeals from you. The bastard smirks, satisfied with the way he makes you moan out his name in pleasure.
- Oh how he loves making you feel good, the way your nipples perk up in his touch,it's just makes him push harder and faster into you, hitting all the right places.
Tumblr media
- Now this man? He's OBSESSED with your chest.
- The moment you enter the ballroom, not even wearing a dress with that much cleavage, and he's feral for you. Just the shape and the way the dress clings tightly into your body drives him mad.
- He's the type of guy who would grope your chest in public,he'd even smirk after it. You'd slap his head anoyed, but stil,a blushing mess.
- Aegon would thirst over you so bad,he wouldn't even be able to take his eyes of you if you wore a dress that revealed even the tiniest amount of cleavege. And his mommy issues? They're on a diff level when your boobs are in game. Most of the time when the two of you are also, you wouldn't be able to get up, because our dear Aegon would hug your waist tightly, and lay his head on your chest. His sleeping form would sooth you, knowing he's so comfortable around you to be vulnerable. Your hands would pet his head gently, twirling at some little curls of his, while smiling.
*NSFW
- Just like his brother,he loves having you ride him,but the only difference is how his moans would spill from his mouth, that suck at your nipples greedily. Aegon would squeeze your ass, while the other would just grip your waist as you ride him, chasing your release.
- He'd leave hickeys on your tits ,then smile at his work. He would sometimes even bite them.
- Even so,he'd never degrade you,he knows you'd scold him and won't allow him to cum if he won't behave nicely.
- Even so, you're the best he'd ever have.
Tumblr media
- This dude would try to act like your whole body belongs to him(it Lowkey does).
- He'd make you wear as less clothing around your chest area as possible. After all Viserys gets off on your embarrassed expression.
- He loves making you feel as exposed and vulnerable.
- It's Canon that he has a superiority complex,so he would always make you do things that would result in you bending down for him, ordering you to clean his body,to get in the tub with him, just to see your exposed body.Just to feel in charge of you.
- The man would never admit he likes you for more than your body. To proud of himself to actually show emotions. So he just gifts you things, without any explanation you just wake up the next day with some jewelry on your bad.
- But when you would forcefully put his head on your chest, ordering him to relax for once...he just can't say no. The prince would just pout and remain the way you forced(he loves it) to stay.
*NSFW
- Sometimes Viserys would fuck you doggy style, just so he could squeeze your boobs while plunging into you. Your body will take each thrust, yearning for more, eyes squeezing so tight, face digging into the pillow, just heaven.
- He'd have you on missionary, watching your expression but also the way your boobs would move in rhythm with his thrust. The sounds escaping your mouth would be like honey for his ears. He'd grab your tits and squeeze them, something even fantasizing about fucking them.
.
.
.
Sooo, by the ending had a few drinks,I wrote the last parts drunk .
Aniways hope u enjoy, and yes I did sneak in Viserys. He's just to fine😭

I'll never understand the whole "Alicent manipulated her kids into hating Rhaenyra" and that "if she didn't they would have a good sibling relationship" like are we watching the same show at this point?
Rhaenyra has literally never tried to bond with her siblings and she literally wanted her 10 year old brother to be "questioned sharply"... she literally wanted him to be tortured!!
Where did people get the delusion from that they would ever have a good sibling relationship??

saw someone say they're we're happy Alicent's and Otto's deaths forced them "realize what they had done" and like...
Otto's one thing, I get the animosity. but Alicent? your getting hot and bothered over her realizing she failed, she failed to save her children, she failed to protect them, to them alive? that she tried so hard, so fucking hard, making every hard decision, trying to get between her children and the fate they were damned to by Viserys and Rhaenyra? that she damned her kids, who were already damned to die to begin with, and had to suffer the guilt of them dying to her own hand? that she's going to drive herself mad with grief over her children, her grandchildren?
like... it's not satisfying (especially for show Alicent) watching a woman go so mad with grief it literally kills her because she fought with everything she had to save her children only for them to die anyway. ever since her father's exile, when Rhaenyra's lies took Viserys's favor, when Viserys ignored the Rhaenyra's sons bastardhood at the risk of the whole house, or when Luke took Aemond's eye and Viserys demanded good will; she knew her children's lives were forfeit. then Daemon killed Vaemond and her children's coffins were built, catching cobweb's all the while. she knew and she fought it desperately, taking risk after risk, living in fear until her moment came, she could out Aegon on the thrown, she could protect her kids, maybe, just fucking maybe they'd be safe... only for it to lead to a war that would kill her entire family.
her death, slow and tragic as it was, is heartbreaking. she didn't deserve it, she deserved to feel safe, to feel as though she could allow her past friend take the thrown without her children being at risk to feel as though she and her children weren't being circled by wolves and picked at by vulture's. she didn't deserve to live alone and die alone. she didn't deserve to have her hands coated in her children's blood.

i watched both trailers hotd season 2 (one for team black and one for team green, like genius?? so good for marketing) and it's so funny that the trailers itselves show that team green isn't right. like yeah we see both teams losing their shts and go for bloodlust but we see that team black is grieving, reasons their actions (psycho plancton killed luke, greens stole rhaenyra's throne etc), just now decided for the war to get back what hers and protect their family, there's guilt and hesitation, while the team green is like "i'mma be a kinslayer" dudes??
the difference between rhaenyra's breaking voice "I mean to fight this war and win it" and aegon's answer to need of violence "good, to war then!" with happy smile, it's riddiculous. "my father CHOSE me, his firstborn child, to succed him" and "the sacrifices that were made to PUT you on that throne" SICK

Okay but it actually breaks my heart that being named heir and remaining heir for Rhaenyra probably became this immense symbol in her life of the importance of her mother Aemma, the love of her father Viserys, the love between her parents, the idea that she mattered still despite losing her mother in her father’s endless pursuit of a male heir. Her father that than remarried and had an abundance of those male children Aemma didn’t. Had a new family, after she lost the only one she ever knew.
Remaining heir and becoming Queen must have meant everything to her. Did it matter if she had never wanted it begin with? What did it mean if she didn’t become Queen? then what was it all for…She was probably clutching onto her heirship so tight with bloody fingernails because of all it symbolized and still it was taken from her.

desperately need people to understand that alicent is a victim but she’s also an abuser and a perpetrator
that she actively makes choices to harm other women because of jealousy and envy and the greed deep in her bones because submitting to suffering didn’t get her what those women fight to grasp for themselves.
she is absolutely a victim, in show.
that doesn’t change that she abused rhaenyra and her children, her own son, most likely helaena given how she flinches every time her mother touches her, and is actively weaponizing the patriarchy of westeros against other women- rhaenyra primarily, but also mysaria and dyana.
she isn’t the moral, righteous force of good that even she thinks she is, she’s a wounded woman directing all of the rot, pain, and fury inside her at the wrong people and forces.
#anti team green stans#anti team green#anti alicent hightower stans#i don’t wanna say it’s anti alicent bc honestly it’s more ‘accept her for who she is bc she’s so much more complex and interesting when you#but i made this bc someone genuinely tried to say that the reason people hate her is that they don’t see her as a victim#most rational people know show!alicent is a victim#it’s the point that’s she’s an abuser as well#that makes them dislike her#that she’s a hypocrite and a traitor#i don’t even like young alicent bc i don’t at all think she was a good friend to rhaenyra#‘it’s not your place to question the plots of lords and men’ to the named heir#dismisses rhaenyra’s hopes and idealism entirely out of hand#is baffled that rhaenyra is more worried for her fathers happiness and mother’s wellbeing than her position#she knew as early as ep 3 that otto was conspiring against rhaenyra and never told anyone#condemns ‘targaryen customs’ only to wed her daughter to her son even younger than she was when otto dangled her before viserys#acts entitled to rhaenyras secrets whilst condemning and judgemental even though she did not give rhaenyra that same courtesy#made no attempt at apology for the insensitive comment of aegon’s birth#though rhaenyra DID try to apologize for the ‘imprisoned in a castle’ line and tried to comfort her#uses her power as queen to push past the space rhaenyra is trying to create because she feels heartbroken and betrayed#rhaenyra took part in alicent’s culture with prayer at alicent’s urging because she cared about alicent and alicent was trying to help her#alicent is never once shown to return that favor instead condemning it for ‘queerness’ and growing to later#erase and remove all targaryen and valyrian heraldry from the red keep to replace with her own#like alicent is a victim and i DO have empathy for her. but i don’t like her and never will#especially not after the way her stans behave#she deserved better than otto’s machinations and viserys’…. viserysness#but that can also be true whilst i condemn her actions and behaviors

There’s so much that’s truly Tragic (with a capital T) about Alicent’s life, specifically in conjunction to how viserys treated her. But I think the saddest thing is how she never asked anything of him. The one time she did, it was literally because their SON had lost his EYE. He took EVERYTHING from her, and left her with carnage in the end.
The dichotomy of her having to beg for some justice, any justice for Aemond to earlier in the season where Viserys says “Alicent got me through the worse of my grief” (before saying he knew she was calculated distraction… ok then why did you still proceed to groom her and maritally r*pe her 🤨 weirdo).
He used her for comfort, as a baby making machine, and to get people off his back about marriage.
And despite Alicent having a horrible feeling about being made to go see viserys, I bet she initially was like “I’ve grown up with this man’s daughter. My dad has been in court/hand for years. He’s seen me as a literal toddler, no way he’d want me like that”. And then you see the way her face falls when viserys tells her that Rhaenyra should not know about their talks. The dynamic shifts… she’s stuck

Can you imagine Laenor getting used to being around Harwin and how bewildering it must be? Because Laenor has grown up with a father like Corlys who is all about names and names and ambition and meaningless honour which he choses over his own son. But here is Harwin, a father who doesn't give a shit about names, whose honour is literally his sons and princess. And while he is commander of the city watch and Rhaenyra's sworn shield which are high positions for sure, everyone knows he could enjoy a far more comfortable and luxurious life back at Harrenhall as its heir. But here he is, ambition of being the future lord pushed aside in favour of being with his children. We just know he was going to be queensguard for the rest of his life when Nyra became queen and kingsguard when Jace became king if they had all lived. Here is a father who doesn't care that his sons call Laenor father, heck him and Laenor are friends! He only cares about protecting them all, uncaring of names and no insecurities. Jace, Luke, Joff could be called Targaryen, Strong, Velaryon, Rivers, Waters and it would make zero difference to Harwin (and Rhaenyra) who would protect and cherish his babies regardless and that.. that makes Laenor reel because it stands in complete opposition to the kind of father he has grown up with. And he wishes that Corlys had more of Harwin's honour, that his father could have valued Leanor's happiness as Harwin valued the happiness of their sons, that his father could have looked beyond his ambition and history books and just looked at him.

I am continuously perplexed at how a show as objectively bad and problematic as hotd keeps inspiring outstanding fanfics like yours and @gwenllian-in-the-abbey’s. Truly it’s a mystery to me, especially considering that the books covering the dance are supposed to be quite mediocre as well from what I’ve perceived. Just so you know, with that trailer out now I’m gonna completely blend out the events of the show and consider our fathers clad in red canon
@gwenllian-in-the-abbey AAAAAAAAAAAAAA, I think George's gonna order a hit on us:D
I'm glad you like our slightly destructive approach to teh canon. I'm mostly fueled by spite and my dislike for George's and HBO's complete disregard for the historical context of the stuff they draw their inspiration from (you can't do the Matilda vs Stephen showdown and expect the same sense of injustice, when your main conflict is about Viserys' imbecilic approach to rules, Rhaenyra's weak-ass claim and papa/dragons being her go-to solution to all her problems, Daemon being a chaos gremlin, Corlys' malignant ambition and the Hightowers being the only ones who actually care about the rule of law.)
A lesbian romance doesn't automatically turn a story into a feminist manifesto, nor does a girlboss who's treated by the narrative as the second coming of Christ. Context matters and it's a mistake to view the Dance through the lens of modern ideals about egalitarianism.
GRRM's hubris when it comes to "Aragorn's tax policies" is just another thing that enrages me and Gwenllian, because the man completely misunderstands the medieval legal codes. Just because they were complex that doesn't mean they were fucking contradictory on their own; no one wanted civil wars breaking out each time a monarch died.
Problems happened when two countries with generational beefs worked on two different principles of succession, ie. England (male-preference primogeniture) vs France (male-only primogeniture), or if there was some dynastic fuckery that completely messed up the clear-cut succession lines with usurpations and cousin marriages (Yorks vs Lancasters).
Tumblr media
Had Richard II (the son of the Black Prince) died peacefully without issue, the succession would have followed through the line of the Duke of Clarence, with Edmund the Earl of March eventually becoming the king (and he was Richard's heir, btw).
But that's not what happened. The son of John of Gaunt usurped the throne and it was then passed down through his line, because he was the crowned king. Now, you can argue whether or not he had any right to do the usurpation in the first place and whether or not he was the legitimate king and you bet people back then argued about that too. This ambiguity is how you create a proper narrative about actually conflicting claims. The only thing propping up Rhaenyra against her brother is the fact that Viserys is a moron.
How the fuck can I take F&B seriously and without the Dead Sea's worth of salt, when it pretty much blows Jaehaerys' posthumous dick about his wisdom when he "let" the council of 101 decide the succession (while politely ignoring the fact that Jaehaerys' own claim is legit only in the cases of either full salic or semi-salic succession, ie male-only), while never once it calls out Viserys out on his extremely dangerous decision. He gets to die venerated as the peaceful grandpa and all the blame for his incompetence is piled on Aegon II and Alicent.
Let's go through the possible succession systems, shall we?
If we follow male-preference primogeniture, the legitimate line of kings ends with Aerea because she was the eldest child of Aegon the Uncrowned, Maegor's eldest nephew. Only after she and her sister die without issue, Jaehaerys can become the king. Jaehaerys' canon ascension works only because Rhaena gave up her daughters' claims. The next in line would be Aemon and after him Rhaenys. But that's not what happened.
If we follow the salic law (male only), the legitimate line of the kings goes Aegon I -> Aenys I -> Aegon Uncrowned -> Jaehaerys I -> Viserys I -> Aegon II. This is probably what Jaehaerys wanted to ensure, since he challenged Maegor's kingship in the first place.
If a crowned king can choose his heir, then Jaehaerys was never a legitimate king and Aerea was the true queen, because Maegor, who had won his crown in the trial by combat, chose her as his heir.
What about the principle of seniority? Cognatic seniority where men and women have equal claims is out of the question since Aegon I was the crowned king, not Visenya. Male-only seniority would go Aegon I -> Aenys I -> Maegor I (uncontested!) -> Aegon Crowned This Time -> Viserys the Not Tortured to Death -> Jaehaerys I -> Aemon (only if his uncle Viserys has no issue) -> Baelon -> Vaegon -> Viserys I -> Daemon (EW).
Notice the distinct lack of Rhaenyra.
Team Black keeps mentioning the widow's law, but that's a bulk of nonsense. I suppose the misunderstanding originates from a (willful) misinterpretation of this passage. The book says:
Tumblr media
Now, I highly doubt Jaehaerys intended for the law to mean that a daughter from the first marriage should come before the sons from the second. The wording is a bit unlucky, but I suppose the intention was to establish the legal position of the second wife and her children as united with the position of her step-children - she has the same duties towards them as if they were own, and the same goes the other way. Which would make sense. Because otherwise, no one would be desperate enough to marry a widower with daughters. Since we know that title and land ownerships have remained in the same families without changing hands once or twice since the implementation of the law, I really doubt the team black's literal interpretation of the passage was the one intended. Ffs, Viserys was pushed to marry again because he had only one daughter, meaning, this law wasn't viewed the way the Team Black wishes for. And I'm not even delving into the fact that this would be a female inheritance hack penned by Jaehaerys, if that was the case. Talk about ooc.
So, yeah, we're taking Gyldayne's interpretation of the past with so much salt our hearts are gonna fail.

viserys showing his rotten eye during the dinner in episode 8 and trying to gain sympathy from his family infuriates me. why? because aemond (you know, HIS SON) lost his eye when he was a child in an extremely violent manner and had to answer an interrogation after being stitched up on the spot and his father did not care. viserys didn't care that his son has been permanently disfigured and did not nothing bring some sort of justice to the situation. but suddenly aemond is supposed to care and feel sympathy? no, he should've spit in viserys' face, get up (and get some dissert) and leave to talk to vhagar (his bff).

If you had the chance to change something about the dance of the dragons (TV show or book), what would it be? For example, how a character dies, which team a house is on,or an entire character personally. How would you change it to make the story better, in your opinion? 💙💚🖤♥️
JUST ONE THING. ANON U R A SADIST.
aksjdjd no okay thank you great ask. sorry if it’s a lil all over the place, i think obsessively about how i would adapt f&b and asoiaf if i was a millionaire lmao.
for the show it’s so easy (besides just giving it like ten more episodes to cook before getting to the Dance, I mean) - lean into the dueling protagonists of alicent & rhaenyra by giving them dueling deuteragonists in aegon ii and jacaerys. i realize this would completely reframe the whole show lmao, but we can even compromise and say once they do that ten year skip, the narrative should focus in on building up the two sides through the dueling protagonists alicent & rhaenyra, and dueling deuteragonists aegon & jace. it makes way more sense to have the character they most interact with be their sons & “heirs” and contrast those relationships & all the politics that exist in how they act as mothers towards their sons. rather than focus in on daemon as the second main character for rhaenyra and…this weird fucking musical chairs male protagonist with the greens they’re doing. it doesn’t fix everything but i think shifting the focus from rhaenyra’s marriages to her as a mother and queen regnant, and from alicent’s conga line of abuses to again, an active role as a mother and queen consort/queen mother, as well as fleshing out the two men who are objectively thee most important men in their lives (argue with the wall jace & aegon haters!!!!). explaining why jace & aegon developed into the sort of men they are through how they exist in the most important relationship in their lives, literally until the day they both die. (and if you’re curious, daemon’s counterpart is aemond, they get to be number three for both their sides. viserys isn’t on a “team” but he does have a counterpart and it’s QOREN).
i think the way they did it in the show really does a disservice to the potential of aegon and especially jacaerys as characters, as well as downplaying the importance of a lot of critical relationships like rhaewin, laenyra, criston’s entire demented relationship with both women, rhaenys’ relationship with laena & rhaenyra, alicent’s whole ass relationship with her kids, AND rhaenyra’s whole ass relationship with her kids. imo they go for this kind of half in half out “we want to appeal to the insane targ stans who genuinely believe incest will save westeros” and “we want to write a story about the complexities of motherhood & sexuality in a patriarchal society” and wound up in a weird place where daemon & alicent are both bisexual but only in deleted scenes and completely drop rhaenyra’s gender fuckery the moment she’s played by an actually non-binary actor and also completely bury the other non-binary actor (rhaena’s actor, phoebe campbell) by giving their character like two fucking lines and no depth.
also better wigs jesus FUCKING christ hbo i know you have the budget!!
for the books….a lot of the problem with the dance is that f&b is so antithetical to how george writes. it’s effectively a very long and detailed outline of a plot and george doesn’t write exclusively by outline. as he says himself, he gardens - he writes and he sees where the writing takes him. if he had actually sat down and written out the dance as a series of short stories the way he does with dunk & egg, i think the plot would not only be massively different it would also be leaps and bounds better. what i want to change is to make george actually WRITE the dance and not just outline and call it a day!!!!
BUT. Okay if I can change ONE thing. fuck that’s hard.
I’d make Larys’ motivation more clear, and when i say more clear i mean my theory is that Larys just straight up hated the Targaryens and Velaryons bc he believed one of them killed Harwin, and decided to get revenge by completely fucking over the whole family tree. i get why people like his show version (I like parts of him a lot too and the actor has some galaxy brained takes!!!) but i think while Larys is well done, his character adaption & the way he’s completely unknowable in the series itself is just a rehash of Tyrion. We already have a disabled younger brother who hates his older brother for being condescending in his love & conditional acceptance, and hates his father for being a patriarchal monster, and is a sexually abusive menace to teenage girls, and I don’t think they are saying anything new or groundbreaking with Larys in the show or book. He is just there to be the evil crippled henchman, and then die.
No, what I want is a true chaos agent to rival Littlefucker, a man who becomes obsessively and uncomfortably devoted to Harwin, the only person in his entire life who ever treated him with any love or respect or care, who launches this bloody, demented quest to completely wipe out every Valyrian left alive for the misuse and murder of his brother. Willing to help kill his own nephews. Willing to burn the kingdom to the ground. Willing to destroy his own house if it means Harwin will be avenged, if it means the dragons die. All leading to Larys getting his Pyrrhic victory and choosing to die because he feels he has nothing left.
Why the extreme change? I think it fits better with a lot of the themes in F&B and the dance in particular - not just family, and “the things we do for love” but the legacy of Valyria, of the Targaryens and the dragons, the clash and growing pains of this group of interlinked cultures learning to tolerate each other’s existence on the same continent, and of course, what being told every day of your life that you’re a monster does to how you view yourself. You can keep all the rest of his weird behavior from the show and the books even - the sexual abuse of Alicent being Larys unable to stop himself from turning into the same sort of awful man his father was; of him switching sides without a care or without any seeming sense in the books, always ready to be the devil on a shoulder to Viserys, Aegon, Alicent, and Corlys - but a little bit here and there to let us know that Larys genuinely loved Harwin until the bitter end. We already have several stories about a brother who grows to resent another and lets the resentment fester until he’s willing to cross a line you can’t come back from and murder his brother for a perceived sleight. I think Larys & the dance as a whole benefit from him being a brother who romanticizes and saintifies Harwin (but not lyonel!) so much that he weaponizes his years of resentment & turns it against the entire world and damn the consequences. I think he fits in much more with Rhaenyra, Alicent, Corlys, Viserys, Daemon, and Rhaenys that way and steps away from being Tyrion but slightly to the left and into his own type of character instead.

i know people rag on it but ryan condal’s whole “yeah daemon’s kinda in love with viserys and sees rhaenyra as an extension of viserys and takes anything viserys does really personally” thing is the single most interesting thing that’s ever been said about daemon and they should have made it explicit in the text
