Latin Literature Tournament - Round 1
Propaganda under the cut!
Suetonius Propaganda
I say this with all love and affection--Suetonius is so full of shit. Like reading a magazine in the grocery impulse aisle, in the best possible way
Has very cool intratextual bits and ring structures
He runs on pure vibes, and honestly I love this for him
Vergil Propaganda:
The vates himself, everyone. The poet so good that the Church was like "okay yeah this one magical pagan can stay"
The Fourth Eclogue is such a weird little delight. Is it about the children of Antony? Augustus? Is it a prediction of the birth of Christ? Is it somehow, as I heard one professor suggest for some reason, about Gallus? The possibilities are endless
Are you going to vote against the world-shattering masterpiece that is the Aeneid?
Side note, if you spell it "Virgil" you are my enemy

Homer: This is my OC Odysseus he’s a trickster
Sophocles: What a compelling villain
Homer: No!! He’s a hero!!!!
Romans: Um, no, he’s totally problematic, he’s definitely evil
Homer: No!!!!!! He’s a good guy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Modern readers: Oh so he’s like, an antihero, cool
Homer: Absolutely not. Now you’re just making up words

On they went then in darkness, through the lonely
Shadowing night, a nowhere of deserted dwellings,
Dim phantasmal reaches where Pluto is king--
Like following a forest path by the hovering light
Of a moon that clouds and unclouds at Jupiter's whim,
While the colours of the world pall in the gloom.
Seamus Heaney, Aeneid Book VI

Virgil wastes no time letting you know that Aeneas has mummy issues and that one of his driving heroic purposes is in finding quality mother-son bonding times.

like the idea that people have had bad taste for hundreds of years might sound crazy to you but the thing is i took AP latin in 11th grade which means i’ve read a couple hundred lines of the aeneid so i personally am inoculated from this misconception
