in the context of haikyuu, it should automatically be assumed that 'rivals' is code for 'best friend to be competitive with'

okay i need to know, who are these two kids and why are they ALWAYS with ukai sr?? are they family somehow or are they really just students who like him and volleyball enough to visit him at the hospital and watch the match with him??

ACTUALLY it fucks me up soooo bad that like. nekomata is FROM miyagi. like. his connection to miyagi isn't just one out of nostalgia for an old friend it's because he lived there and loved there and called it home it's the fact that he knows the same miyagi ukai does the fact that he wasn't there to watch it change and grow but ukai did it all just makes my heart ACHE because, yeah, he's old now and he lives and breathes tokyo but i bet there were days he used to be so homesick it made him sleepless there were days the skyscrapers of the big city weighed him down like stone there were days when the hole in his heart where the mountains used to beat loud and proud felt so empty and wide and threatened to swallow him whole and the only connection he had left was when ukai NEVER gave up on him and they promised to find each other and defeat each other and god nekoma has always BEEN about connections it's been that way since the BEGINNING it's been that way since nekomata left the small towns shadowed by the mountains behind because he could not, even for a moment, forget the place that forged his blood and bone

i feel like i’ve alluded to this headcanon in previous posts lol

i just like the idea of keishin being raised by his grandpa

what happened to his parents? idk, he’s never seemed like he had a dad to me, you can decide what happened to him.

his mom was super busy growing up so he got left with gramps most of the time, he moved in with him full time during middle school because everyone was mostly chill with it and things were crazy for his mom at the time.

grandpa ukai certainly has opinions about how his daughter treats her son, but he keeps it between himself and his kid for the most part. in his adult life keishin tries to avoid being around them whenever they’re talking because he doesn’t want to deal with them arguing.

idk, he just seems like he’d have a complicated family structure.

his mom also has curly hair btw (3c, so does ikkei aka grandpa ukai), his dad had straight hair so he ended up with 2c/3a hair. if you even care.

First of all, I love the way Furudate is so methodical and perfect in how he depicts certain themes throughout the entire series, like vsnclabfoahfo. It's also interesting though that the other person that says this is Kageyama's grandfather who is also a coach like Ikkei.

I also wonder who Yamaguchi heard this from and the context of that conversation. Like it was clearly notable if he still remembers it, ya know?

the ukais and their dynamic have so much nuance and potential it makes me want to flip furniture. they love each other so much, they just can’t navigate each other’s personalities. they’re too different and too similar. they would sooner fight all the time than admit that all they do is worry about each other. their relationship is so full of love and dislike and disappointment and pride and its all so GRRR
