Albert Einstein was reported to have once observed: “There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.” This idyllic patch of northern hardwood forest on the summit of Spruce Mountain reminds me that the world is teeming with miracles large and small, each in its own way capable of connecting us to something much bigger than ourselves. A drop a rain water clinging perilously to the tip of a petal or leaf. Life finding surprising purchase in the fissures and seams of moss-covered boulders older than the North American continent. The ingenuity and purposefulness in the design of a flower. Miracles exist, but they aren’t the gifts of calculating gods. They are the fruits of Nature’s relentless perseverance.
From top: red elderberry (Sambucus pubens), also known as American red elder, which can be distinguished from common elderberry by its panicled flowers; wild bleeding heart (Dicentra eximia), also known as turkey corn and fringed bleeding heart, which blooms from spring through fall in the Appalachian Mountains; Canada mayflower (Maianthemum canadense), also known as false lily-of-the-valley, a master of vegetative cloning; and yellow clintonia (Clintonia borealis), also known as bluebead lily, another adept colonizer of cool, acidic forests.

I was going to take before and after pictures of the dinner I made (bc I finally had time to cook again 🙌) but I was filled with so much euphoria when I finished cooking my taco filling and frying my tortillas that I completely forgot to take the after picture 😂 You’ll just have to trust that it was good
