How I'm bypassing tumblr's new tracking bullshit
On mobile, I tried to remove Tumblr's URL tracking bullshit from a link -- as per @pizza-and-ramen's post -- but it wasn't working anymore.
Came to realize that Tumblr was generating a new "post ID" every time I tried to copy the link.
So here's what I did.
Open a web browser ๐
Search the URL of the blog you're linking from ๐
Click on their page in the results โ๏ธ
Deny any prompting to open in the app. ๐ซ Stay in the browser
Search for the post in question ๐
Click the meatball menu (โขโขโข) on the post and select "Permalink" โ
Check the URL in your URL bar for any other tracking crap such as /amp and remove it โ๏ธ
Copy the new URL now in your URL bar ๐
Safely paste to your heart's content ๐

Link as plain text for copy-pasting: https://guiltyidealist.tumblr.com/post/701939743936643072/hey-is-anybody-else-having-issues-with-shinigami
Hey is anybody else having issues with Shinigami eyes? Itโs not marking things as t-friendly or anti-trans like it used to for me, telling me
This item could not be labeled. Possible reasons:ย
It doesnโt represent a specific user or page
Itโs not the kind of item supported by Shinigami Eyes
Iโm trying to mark thisย (link is tracking-free) but it gave me this pop-up for their page as well and for every other raddie user and post I tried to markย

Tumblr tracker update
Today I opened my tumblr app and to my surprise I was on a post I never seen before. It was a post about a fandom I am not really in nor is anyone I follow. I realized it wasnโt my timeline, it was just the post, as if someone sent it to me and I opened it. I thought it was funny so I turned my phone to my sister whose face quickly turned to shock. She sent that post to our sibling (my siblings and I are share a house)
We did some experiments. It only happens when my sister (app) texts a link to my sibling (phone website) without getting rid of tumblrs new tracking. My sibling has to have opened the link but without fail, the next time I open my app, I will see that post
So remember this (the original is deleted but hereโs a rb):
Delete the red!!

Tumblr is Tracking Shared Links
It looks like Tumblr @staff have finally implemented tracking garbage into shared links in the Tumblr mobile app. It took them years and years, but Tumblr is finally making an attempt to track shared links you click or links you share with friends.
When you share a post and choose to โcopyโ a link to your clipboard, you can see that they use their (new?) url shortener, at.tumblr.com.ย The shortened URL appears to contain: your blog name; either the ID of the destination post, or the short string associated with the post; and an alphanumeric string.ย Eg:
https://at.tumblr.com/pizza-and-ramen/im-fucking-dying-this-is-hilarious/uqndb20nkyob
The shortened URL redirects you to the destination link, but with 2 URL parameters: _branch_referrer and _branch_match_id.ย Both are associated with a third-party analytics tool, branch.io.ย Eg:
https://pizza-and-ramen.tumblr.com/post/118684413624/im-fucking-dying-this-is-hilarious?_branch_referrer=H4sIAAAAAAAAAxXEwQ2AIAwAwIlKH8aP21RQaaSAUIIyvZpczqvmuiCSGm2yhmJsEsw8BgFFB4Vki8gCe7MnxwPc86%2BeK3w8ByqcWsU7jHnql0u99xd0v%2FAuVQAAAA%3D%3D&_branch_match_id=1104914739086906151
_branch_referrer appears to be another shortened at.tumblr.com URL, except itโs been gzipped, base64 encoded, then URL encoded.ย Eg:
H4sIAAAAAAAAAxXEwQ2AIAwAwIlKH8aP21RQaaSAUIIyvZpczqvmuiCSGm2yhmJsEsw8BgFFB4Vki8gCe7MnxwPc86%2BeK3w8ByqcWsU7jHnql0u99xd0v%2FAuVQAAAA%3D%3D
URL decode to:
H4sIAAAAAAAAAxXEwQ2AIAwAwIlKH8aP21RQaaSAUIIyvZpczqvmuiCSGm2yhmJsEsw8BgFFB4Vki8gCe7MnxwPc86+eK3w8ByqcWsU7jHnql0u99xd0v/AuVQAAAA==
base64 decode to (in hex for legibility):
1F8B0800 00000000 000315C4 C10D8020 0C00C089 4A1FC68F DB545069 A4805082 32BD9A5C CEABE6BA 20921A6D B286626C 12CC3C06 01450785 648BC802 7BB327C7 03DCF3AF 9E2B7C3C 072A9C5A C53B8C79 EA974BBD F71774BF F02E5500 0000
and unzipped with gunzip:
https://at.tumblr.com/pizza-and-ramen/im-fucking-dying-this-is-hilarious/xlz53wqdowww
which directs to the post with the same _branch_referrer but a new _branch_match_id:
https://pizza-and-ramen.tumblr.com/post/118684413624/im-fucking-dying-this-is-hilarious?_branch_match_id=1104899685865808870&_branch_referrer=H4sIAAAAAAAAAxXEwQ2AIAwAwIlKH8aP21RQaaSAUIIyvZpczqvmuiCSGm2yhmJsEsw8BgFFB4Vki8gCe7MnxwPc86%2BeK3w8ByqcWsU7jHnql0u99xd0v%2FAuVQAAAA%3D%3D
_branch_match_id, according to this stackoverflow answer, is an identifier unique to you, used to track users.ย It could be based on browser fingerprinting, as branch.ioโs branch_match_id is.
Anyway, thereโs not a terribly easy way to avoid this tracking from the Tumblr mobile app, but if you get a link that has the id, not the string, you can modify it to the format of blog.tumblr.com/ID, like so before sending it to a friend:
https://at.tumblr.com/pizza-and-ramen/118684413624/uqndb20nkyob
https://pizza-and-ramen.tumblr.com/118684413624
Alternately, you could paste the link in your browser, allow it to redirect, then remove everything past the ? at the end, eg:
https://pizza-and-ramen.tumblr.com/post/118684413624/im-fucking-dying-this-is-hilarious?_branch_referrer=H4sIAAAAAAAAAxXEwQ2AIAwAwIlKH8aP21RQaaSAUIIyvZpczqvmuiCSGm2yhmJsEsw8BgFFB4Vki8gCe7MnxwPc86%2BeK3w8ByqcWsU7jHnql0u99xd0v%2FAuVQAAAA%3D%3D&_branch_match_id=1104914739086906151
https://pizza-and-ramen.tumblr.com/post/118684413624/im-fucking-dying-this-is-hilarious
Anyway, this has been my privacy rant of the day.ย Thanks for reading, and let me know if you know more about this than I do!

๐โ๏ผโธบโat.tumblr.com links remover
[image description: a screenshot of an online tool that saysย โtumblr - remove at.tumblr.com on link sharesโ. The prompt label says โPaste in the Tumblr link you copiedโ, and includes two examples of such links. It finishes with a button that says โDo the thing pleaseโ, with all the words capitalized, and a click icon. end IDโ]
๐ข As of 2023/03/24, Tumblr are no longer enforcing at.tumblr.com links when you copy a link from the mobile/app. [Read More]
When a post link is copied via mobile, it can appear as the following variants:
๐โใโat.tumblr.comโ/โ{๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐}โ/โ{๐๐๐๐๐๐๐_๐๐๐ก๐}โ/โ{๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐_๐๐}
๐โใโat.tumblr.comโ/โ{๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐}โ/โ{๐๐๐๐_๐๐}โ/โ{๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐_๐๐}
๐โใโtumblr.comโ/โ{๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐}โ/โpostโ/โ{๐๐๐๐_๐๐}
I made a tool that converts them back to their original permalinks so when theyโre shared on social media, the previews should show again.
๐๐ผโat-tumblr-links.glitch.me
You can bookmark this on your phone or your desktop browser so you can quickly access it when you need it!
Currently, itโs not known which at.tumblr.com link format will proc under what circumstances. If it has a ๐๐๐๐_๐๐ in it, thatโs good news. If it doesnโt, we need to ask a URL un-shortener service to follow the redirects for us. But this tool should accommodate any format regardless. Itโs not perfect, but I hope it helps.
Read more about at.tumblr.com tracking links [here].
If you run into any issues, you can report them to me via Discord or Tumblr ask.
