to tumblr’s trans people: I’m getting my first binder soon but I don’t know what brand to use. Which is your favorite? (I’m looking for something with a lot of compression)
If you’re cis and this shows up on your blog, PLEASE REBLOG FOR A BIGGER SAMPLE SIZE!
edit: I can’t change the poll, but after some research, it seems that gc2b’s binders are incredibly unsafe. Just want to put this here in case another trans guy is looking at this poll. Underworks seems to be the best option as far as I’ve seen from other people.
Washing binders is really important. For me personally, I do it about once every two weeks. However, learning how to do this correctly important, otherwise you run the risk of shrinking your binder. Hand washing your binder is important, because using a washing machine shrinks it and makes it unwearable.
- Run lukewarm water in a large container (bath, sink, bucket, etc). Don't fill it all the way to the top, keep it thin but deep enough to sink the binder in.
- Gently swirl in some gently washing detergent. I usually an 18-in-one washing liquid, but any liquid or shower gel will do! Use something preferably gentle, and use about two to three drops,
- Turn the binder inside out, and gently submerge it in water. Swirl it around gently for two minutes, focussing on the areas around the armpits and the front where the sweat reaches the most.
- Leave in the water for half an hour to two hours
- Once you deem it ready (or when you remember it for me), drain the liquid and wash off the soap with cold water. Leave to air-dry overnight, I usually use a clothes hanger and put it on my door and that works.
Always wash safely and by hand! All of these tips can be adjusted if you need to do it privately or without your parents finding out.
I’ve been looking into safety for trans tape and I haven’t seen any posts on here with all the tips in one place and so I’ll write them here, for anyone else thinking of using it:
Before applying, make sure to wash skin to make sure there are no oils or moisturisers on your skin
Make nipple covers. This can be done with trans tape by folding a bit in half and sticking that on, so no adhesive side touches
Cut each strip with round corners, so that they are softer on the skin
For bigger chests, laying down whilst applying it can help
Don’t stretch it fully when you apply it, so that you don’t restrict your chest dangerously.
Remove slowly with the use of oil and or a hot shower, making sure to be gentle
While it seems as though there are a lot of things to do to be safe with trans tape, it is a safer alternative to binding and can be worn for far longer. I’ll put other resources I’ve found below:
Safety information for binding or taping chests
Application manual for trans tape
How to apply trans tape for large chests - video
Shop for a starter kit for trans tape
Or, kinesiology tape can be a cheaper alternative, which can be found on amazon just by searching ‘kinesiology tape’
If anyone else has any tips they’d be appreciated!!!
I got a binder off amazon (yes it sucks but it's the only online place my mom will tolerate me getting things from) that had a lot of good reviews from real people of many body types who ordered many different sizes but. For some reason it did not bind me like it was supposed to?? I even ordered a second in a smaller size (which I could barely even squeeze on) and it had the same result as the first one. For reference:
I even tried repositioning my boobs inside the binder to see if it helped but it didn't.
The company was LGBT unicorns.
So am i doing it wrong, are my tits just too big to bind or is the company bad quality??
Do any plus sized folks have any tips for how to use trans tape? I have DD (maybe bigger) and I just tried using it for the first time, got frustrated almost instantly (while following one of the official TT videos meant for bigger chests), and am now double binding trying not to break down.
Any tips would be seriously so appreciated, I just want to be able to wear 90% of my clothes on a bad dysphoria day without my chest hurting or having trouble breathing or whatever else
Do you bind/have you bound? How did binding affect passing? I’m curious because it seems like the narrative is that binding usually helps people pass, but I *always passed worse* when I bound using a traditional binder because it made me have a prominent uniboob. I was only able to actually pass after getting top surgery, even when I had visible facial hair.
I dare yall to fight me abt this but thw best feeling is unloading the dryer and your binder was in there and it's warm so you immediately put it on and you got warm gender euphoria
- drink lots of water! I don't wanna see any of you suckers dehydrated, especially if you bind!!
- if you feel any stabbing or aching pain, take a break and take it off
- as well as this, if you feel too hot or short of breath, take a break and take it off
- bathroom stalls are great for binder breaks because it's private
- wash your binders!! Please!!! It can cause real skin problems, for some advice on washing it go here
- try and wear outfits that will keep you cool, yes I know dysphoria sucks but you know what sucks worse than dysphoria? Heat stroke
- don't wear it for more than 8 hours. Don't do it.
- personally, I've found that a darker coloured binder (black, navy) is better because if you through a button up on top, bam! It just looks like a tank top
- stretches! God, stretches help so much- there's a lot out of there, do some research and see what helps you
Stay cool and have fun kids! Remember hydrate don't diedrate. Take care of yourselves.
okay i feel like i’m not going to find much because, believe me, my research has been fairly thorough, but are there any alternatives to binders and trans tape? i have an Underworks binder, which i originally really liked, but i washed it in the washer one day (in a lingerie bag) and it’s been ill-fitting ever since. i also have used trans tape, but find it time-consuming and am unemployed w/no income so i cannot replace my stash. is there anything better than using a binder or trans tape? and, if there’s not, what binders would you guys recommend? i had the Underworks Tri-Top, but the material was uncomfortable and TRAPPED sweat and bacteria to the point where even multiple washes couldn’t save it. binder users, what would you recommend for a sensory-friendly but relatively effective binder? i know one may not exist but i’m so tired of being so dysphoric all the time lol. thank you lovely readers in advance ❤️
