RattleAxe
Marauding Mistress of Venom
Welcome to Planet Feyr, Pariah Planet of the Eternal Galaxy. It doesn't matter how you got here, or why you came. Feyr is power. Feyr is opportunity. Feyr is eternal.
And Feyr is inescapable.
I am tinkering with RPG Maker, but instead of leaning into the retro-JRPG pixel art thing, I'm instead looking at the aesthetics of 80s toy tie-in kids books and box paintings. She's a an early stab at it.
Process and text transcript under the fold
Whatever and whoever RATTLEAXE once was, it was FEYR that made her the monster she is today. No lost soul or banished prisoner, RATTLEAXE gave herself to the pariah planet willingly, surrendering her freedom for a chance at PLANET FEYR’s true power.
A flick of RattleAxe’s tail shatters stone and scatters foes. Even the slightest nick of her fangs or blades brings sleep, paralysis, madness or worse thanks to the many toxins the Mistress of Venom ‘s fangs brew at her command.
Despite being a coward, liar, and marauder, RattleAxe cannot bring herself to attack a foe without announcing her presence with a rattle of her bladed tail.
-
I started with the name. I'd been using lizardfolk to test different prompts for style, and the pun popped into my head.
A snake-girl with a battleaxe tail isn't something you can just prompt for, so RattleAxe is a multi-prompt composite. I wound up making several rough photoshop composites to use as image and style prompts to get the exact kind of vibe I wanted, somewhere between Norem and Frazetta, with a healthy dollop of 80s MOTU & D&D knockoff.
I'm real early into the in-game integration (the Felicias are placeholders to help me work out character size and such.) I'm thinking this rough size will work (I'd go bigger but there's going to be large-scale monsters and guys on steeds), but I'll probably need to get in the weeds of things to get protagonists of a similar size that don't block each other. I really wish RPGMaker MV it would just let you place the protagonists for each fight like you do the baddies. It would make things so much easier.

Was randomly thinking earlier how the Barbie Movie (2023) and Batman & Robin (1997) both occupy the same space as hyper toyetic films, but Barbie didn't capitalize on it as much unlike B&R

I Think I Might Be a Kidult
Just this morning I learned the term while listening to the Imaginary Worlds podcast episode called: Class of ‘84: Turtles, Transformers and Toys Takeover TV which introduced me to another term "toyetic". My goddess who knew think pieces, podcast and documentaries were being written about 80s toys and characters?
I was very tickled by this episode because from beginning to the end it held my total attention, they were talking about the sweet spot of my love of toys and animated television shows. This episode focused in on two of my favs one from then and one I discovered later. Transformers was the former and the Teenaged Mutant Ninja Turtles was the latter, I had really gotten into that on YouTube watching the original series every week during my Saturday Morning Cartoons scheduled programming.
The fact that I designated a specific day every week to just watch cartoons totally ticked off one of the items on the list of things that made you a kidult. My reasons were layered, this was the time period when my mom was still alive, albeit I had faced quite a few traumas during this period, they would pale in comparisons to later ones. I also faced something as a child, which my therapist explained to me as parentification.
Tumblr media
Unbeknownst to my mom in trying to do her best to raise her three kids she did this to me. This behavior spilled over into my adulthood in me being overly-responsible and never really being as irresponsible and experimental as my peers during my developing years. Through much therapy and maturity I now actively rebel against adulting, and take every opportunity to regress to a simpler time, one unburdened by constantly having to make decisions and care for others around me.
One of the huge benefits of the inheritance from my father's mother is my no longer needing to work. I live meagerly not wanting for much, but am the master of my schedule not being beholden to anyone or anything. This was the biggest blessing after being the caregiver of a woman who psychologically abused me my entire adult life. The fact that her personal greed lead to my personal bounty was a major upside, giving me the time and space to heal my many unresolved wounds.
Kidulting is something I fully embrace as a place of safety, comfort and stability things I had missed through out my formative years and early adulthood. I could finally give myself the things that others couldn't give me and if this happens to include a bunch of die-cast, plastic and metal toys you know what, I have abso-smurfly no problem with that!

#PowerpuffGirls2016 #PackRat #Thrifta #BootlegToys #TonyaEtic #Toyetic #ToyPoodleToy #MyOc #PackRatFanart #AnimatronicToyOc#MyArt
Thrifta or (Tonya Etic) is a bootleg toy poodle or a life force doll villain.
She was once a hard working human woman at a toy factory until she got fired from her job because the Powerpuff Girls became so popular. No kid just wanted normal toys without the girls faces on the toys.
So the company was going to shut down the factory so it can be rebuilt as a Powerpuff girls toy, clothes, and other products factory.
So she stayed after hours to get her things to leave but she slipped on some Crazy paste (parody of gak) then fell in the machine that made kids toys. So she became a bootleg toy poodle and now she steal or as she says saves toys that are not loved. (It's implied she died then became this and her lifeforce is what remains controlling this form.)
She mostly wants to destroy the Powerpuff girls and defame them. When asked if she wants to rule the world she will say "Nah its been done before." Her plastic body can't be melted easy and the longer a person gets close to her she smells like lead if she really hates a person.
But if she likes a person she will have a fruit or chocolate smell.
She really loves Packrat because he looks so plush like and cute. She will protect him and help him with shiny heists. She doesn't mind getting dirty and soon want's Packrat to be a toy creature like her.
Her body is animatronic like and bullets won't hurt her. She also doesn't have a off switch or can't be over changed. Her weakness is not enough sunlight. She has two other forms besides this one.
It only happens when she gets damaged badly and will retreat to a thrift store toy box then jump in to heal. She also can mold her body type into a human mannequin as a disguise.
She will get offended by dog traits like rover, catch the ball, scratching behind her ears, squeaky toys, and dog treats. She does eat and drink if solar power is reduced. She is half human and half toy bootleg toy. She can detach and retach her head, limbs, ears, and tail.
She also found the Powerpuff girls car without any wheels and is using it for something special. She can also control toys to fight with her. Mostly the most weirdest bootleg toys and normal toys. She hates dank memes and cringes when the Powerpuff girls say or do them.
She even scuffs that the Powerpuff girls are so weak now that they can't even beat a bootleg toy creature fairly. She will work with Silco if he doesn't turn out to be a wimpy villain. Her eyes and symbol both glow. She has sharp block teeth. (Similar to Legos.)
She also has a drone propeller coming out of her back. She uses yoyo balls to fight. She balances and attacks with her Aura ball by kicking or bouncing it. It can also absorb aura powers then she manipulate a anti aura that is metallic purple.
I drew her before Bliss was a thing. And I don't think she has aura powers.
Her human name was Tonya Etic a play on Toyetic.
What she does with the Powerpuff Girls broken toy car without wheels she makes this thing.
The bootleg toy I want the most if it is even real.
Bootleg Car image not mine but link is there.

You can complain about the crassness of 80s advert-toons, but what came before wasn't good just because it didn't have a toy company paying the bills.
In fact, that was part of the problem.
(splitting this into its own post)
Pre-80s, your biggest player in TV animation was Hanna Barbera. Post-Cartoon Network kids won't remember, but before they had a network to fill, HB made low-cost dreck exclusively. Race-to-the-bottom, cheap-as-possible, formula driven dreck.
Tumblr media
Some of it was dreck with potential and staying power, because you had guys like Alex Toth trying their best to make good stuff despite being given the budget of a Viewmaster disk.
Kidvid in the 80s was the first time, en-masse, someone cared about the quality of kids' entertainment on TV. Not kids' edutainment, PBS existed for awhile, but actual get down and have fun kidvid. Prior to that you had the distressing puppet shows from Sid and Marty Kroft and everything else was 'what will the kids care?' low-end channel filler.
Tumblr media
(Channel filler that was, by the way, still selling toys and candy. Just not themed after what the kids were watching)
Then in the 80s, suddenly a lot of people care about the quality of the show. They care because the show is a very expensive ad campaign, but suddenly the avenue to maximized profits drove through a show that was actually engaging and entertaining to kids.
Tumblr media
At the same time, your animation industry was flush with new money and a desire to not see that snatched away by another 1960s parent panic that killed the Sugar Bear cartoon. So the studios did everything they could to not make the shows the advertisements they were assumed to be. The goal of elevating the project to avoid feeling like an ad-writer also slipped in. You get stuff like Real Ghostbusters, Spiral Zone, Bravestarr, some very impressively animated and written shows...
And before that, remember, was Jabberjaw, Huckleberry Hound, and fucking Clutch Cargo.
Tumblr media
Yes, that is a pair of human lips projected onto a blank face because they couldn't afford animation.
And everything that wasn't a toy-toon had to have a bigger budget to compete. You don't get Thundarr the Barbarian until HB has He-Man breathing down its neck. There is no Le Mondes Engloitis if they don't have the merch wave washing over France. The Disney Afternoon was only what it was because it was trying to contrast itself from the figure aisle.
There is no BTAS or Gargoyles without the action figures.
New Google makes searching for the quote basically impossible, but one of the leads on G.I.Joe has a quote along the lines of: the fantasy of G.I.Joe was not a war fantasy. The fantasy of G.I.Joe was the idea that when you get in trouble, you have a large group of friends who will be there to help you through it.
And one last dirty little secret. Before they could make cartoons based on toys the toy market was still driven by licensed stuff, it was just stuff based on live action properties:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The 80s are seen as this time in which kids were deeply exploited, and all the money made in the kidvid and toy industries is seen as the evidence of that. The idea that the boom happened, even in part, because kids were actually getting media and toys they wanted never occurs to them.
And what did youtube make into the face of kid's entertainment?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
If the YT kidverse had to deal with the regulations and rules of 1980s advertising cartoons none of that would have happened.
No one wants what these guys are selling.

TyrannoMax Theme Song (Season 1)
TyrannoMax and the Warriors of the Core (or TyrannoMax and the Heroes of the Core if you're from the UK) from Buzby-Spurlock Animation is a forgotten 80s gem, based on the comics from Cocytus Comics.
The cartoon emphasized Dr. Underfang as a primary antagonist, re-contextualizing most of the side-villains as his minions or creations directly. The 'Fossilized Time' origin was simplified into a hollow earth accessed via portals, and a lot was obviously softened for kids TV, particularly DeinoSteve.
It also where a lot of the iconic aspects of the film came from. The Dinoid society already had high-tech devices when the toon starts, where in the comics TriceraBruce invented their gadgets by reverse-engineering human and Ultramerican tech. Wally is in high school instead of being college age and Bobby is a regular member of the cast along with Max's show-original little cousin Wrexy.
The scads of toy-based characters go without saying.
Like most Buzby-Spurlock productions, TyrannoMax is largely lost media. This comes down mainly to the company's legal troubles in the 90s preventing official release. Here's hoping the new buyout means re-release.
"Warriors of the Core, lets hear that roar!"
Screencap is three individual multi-gen composites and overpaintings with extensive photomanipulation. The song was generated with SunoAI.

You ever think about how bullshit it is that the Basilisk War Droid never got an action figure and, given there’s been multiple new Mandalorian-related series without it showing up in the new Expanded Universe, likely never will be?
Like, look at this shit and tell me it doesn’t deserve an action figure to put your Boba Fett on:
