SO6E19: What's Up Doc
In this episode, the A and the B plot take off from the same moment in OR, and go in very different directions. The A plot is, Hawkeye noting that Margaret seems unusually irritatable in OR - BJ is trying to operate on Lieutenant Tom Martinson, he's shoving the mask away, going "No!" and Margaret moves in and positions the mask to the man goes under, telling the nurse off for not doing her job right.
BJ says: "Don't start a fight, or we'll be sent to the principal's office."
While Margaret is holding the mask over Martinson's face, BJ's helpful response is "Hey, Margaret, take it easy. She just doesn't like a guy who grabs."
Margaret tells the nurse off, and BJ tells Margaret "As an officer and a gentleman, you should forgive and forget."
Hawkeye's move is to follow Margaret and check in with her, find out why she's so irritable, and this is all good stuff, but let's follow the Martinson plot while Hawkeye is focussing on Margaret.
BJ and Charles are sharing post-off duty: BJ is examining the patient he was operating on when Margaret lost her temper: Lieutenant Tom Martinson.
"How's that shoulder feel, Martinson? I think I did a bang-up job on your bang-up even if I do say so myself."
Martinson asks unhappily "You're gonna send me back up there, aren't ya, Doc?"
BJ says "You're ambulatory now. *checks wristwatch* You'll be out of here by noon Thursday."
BJ adds "You're lucky. That's when our rates change."
Hawkeye isn't there. Hawkeye is focussing his entire attention on Margaret. BJ - I think - is trying to be Hawkeye. Hawkeye would crack a joke to cheer up a depressed patient in post-op: so BJ does. And when the patient doesn't laugh, BJ laughs for him: a very forced laugh.
Martinson rolls his eyes at BJ.
What would Hawkeye's reaction have been to a patient rolling his eyes at a joke?
BJ's reaction is: "I don't remember. Did I remove your sense of humor?"
Martinson's response to BJ? "
"Knock it off, Doc. This morning I was leading and retreated smack into a minefield. That shrapnel you removed from my shoulder is what's left of my sergeant's helmet. He was right next to me when the mine went up."
BJ reacts:
Martinson says "I am not going back. I won't go back."
BJ says: "I know how you must feel."
BJ, apparently realising that Hawkeye-style jokes aren't going to work, sticks his hands in his pockets, and Martinson says: "You think it's because I'm scared, don't you?"
BJ, attempting to be sympathetic: If you are, you're not alone, soldier."
BJ sits down. Martinson says "I am not a soldier. I never was a soldier. I thought R.O.T. C.would keep me out of active duty."
BJ's answer is "Should've read the fine print."
Martinson points out he's an art history major, and when he was drafted, he assumed the army would put him somewhere relevant - just as they did BJ.
BJ quips "I think the marines are the only ones with an art history division."
This DOES NOT HELP. Martinson points out that an art history degree taught him nothing about leading men into action, and his inexperience got his sergeant killed.
BJ: "Look, Martinson, you can't blame yourself for that."
And Martinson, quite reasonably, says "Get out of here, will you? Just leave me alone."
So BJ does.
Charles cannot resist a little prodding, but the fact is, Charles' is right: "Bedside manner failing you, Hunnicutt?"
- "Lay off, Winchester."
"What's this, "Attila the Pun" has lost his sense of good humor? "
BJ goes back later to try again.
"Look, Tom. I hate this place, this war, just as much as you do. But there really isn't a whole hell of a lot we can do about it except cope with the situation as best we can."
BJ adds "That or rent a room in Leavenworth."
That look on Martinson's face.
BJ's solution isn't a bad one. Hawkeye would likely have come to the same conclusion and made the same suggestion. But not in that form and not with that kind of visible reluctance - BJ literally coughs and raises his fist to his mouth before suggesting:
"I can recommend you be sent to Tokyo for psychiatric observation."
To which Martinson responds - irrationally, but BJ's way of introducing it wasn't great either - "I'm not letting headhunters get ahold of me and put in my records that I'm nuts.'This is to certify that Tom Martinson, Associate Professor of Art History - went bonkers in Korea'?"
BJ: "They're not there to brand you. They're there to help you."
"Will you slow down?"
Charles steps in, evidently believing that as a fellow Ivy Leaguer - Martinson graduated from Yale - he can better help a patient BJ has managed to antagonise. BJ gives up. "Be my guest."
Charles instructs BJ: "Don't - Don't go away. I think it's important you observe this."
The expression on BJ's face. It's fairly clear he has emotionally signed off on Martinson and now just wants to see Charles fail, too.
Charles Emerson Winchester III, Harvard graduate, is speaking to Tom Martinson, Yale graduate, and BJ is only amused.
"I could tell at once that you were a man of education and breeding. I guess the army is no place for a couple of - Ivy Leaguers like us Is it, Lieutenant?"
Charles is the one who hands Martinson the backpack with his gun, and who nearly gets shot, but BJ is - having attempted to be Hawkeye without Hawkeye's unshakeable concern - primarily responsible for goading Martinson to the point where he decides taking a hostage to get out is the only option. Charles is only the last straw: BJ loaded it on.
Tom Martinson: "I'll shoot this man if I have to."
BJ: "Okay. Not that okay."

Tribbles Customizable Card Game
Original Release: 1999
Developer: Tom Braunlich, Bill Martinson, Roland L. Tesh
Publisher: Decipher
Platform: Board Game
This is sort of a standalone expansion to the Star Trek Customizable Card Game, yet also its own completely unique game at the same time. It’s compatible with Tribble cards from the CCG, but has it’s own rule set – one that’s a single page long.
Tribbles is a bit like Uno in that the goal is to get rid of all the cards in your hand by placing them in sequence order of 1, 10, 100, 1000 and 100000 Tribble cards. If you can’t go, you draw a card. Cards also have powers like skip, reverse or play another card. Each player starts with their own unique deck and over the course of the 5 matches, you can get rid of some card by adding them to a discard pile, which will then be removed for later matches.
It’s a simple game, but also good fun.

ECP0769 Hard Place plays Smile at the Knockout SF 11/17/2006 Cam 1
Smile was a series of shows put on in San Francisco by Neil Martinson, initially at the Hush Hush and later at the Knockout. Neil featured bands with their own unique takes on psychedelia or power-pop and DJ'ed deep cuts from the 60s, 70s, and beyond in between sets.
This show took place at the Knockout on November 17, 2006. Ear Candle Productions brought two cameras, so we are presenting each angle in turn. This is camera 1.
This set features Hard Place, a fun band from L.A. with an over the top glam sensibility. Ashley Huizenga on vocals and keyboard, Freddy Christy on vocals and guitar, Nathan Lee Shafer on bass, and Tom Marzella (who played in all three bands at this show) on drums. Get your hopes up! It's gonna be awesome!

My Reading List for 2020
It’s no secret 2020 has been a challenging year. While upon reflection, I found it to be surprisingly full, like many of us, I still spent the majority of my time at home. One benefit of our new socially-distant stay-at-home culture was the amount of reading I managed to accomplish. Just like previous years, I’ve compiled a list of the books I’ve read over the last three hundred and sixty-six days, and as always, I want to share them with everyone.
This year was hit-or-miss for me reading-wise. There were books I loved and many books I ended up loathing. I found books I know I will re-read and proselytize, but they were often mirrored by other books I hate-read. I also found myself reading a few histories for pleasure, not something I normally do, and I dipped into science fiction much more than in previous years. Audiobooks (
) used to be the mainstay of my daily commute, and this year they became the soundtrack to housework. Not a bad tradeoff. Oh, and as always, I beta-read a couple of great books, and I’m excited to see where those go in the future.
This list correlates with my Goodreads 2020 Reading Challenge, but it always includes a few extra since Goodreads doesn’t let me count beta reading, and I don’t list comics or short stories or poetry (new this year!) over there. Remember, this is all strictly reading for pleasure—I typically forgo listing any research/history books I’ve read for a project as I read those differently than I do fiction. This list is always enormous, so l skip reviews except for my favorites in each category. However, I’d invite you to follow me on Goodreads, where I occasionally leave other reviews.

Favorite Novel of 2020
In the Valley of the Sun
by Andy Davidson
This sun-baked vampire horror set in Texas unexpectedly became a new favorite. A surprisingly tense, character-focused narrative. Brutal. Anguished. Tormented. Bloody. Lyrical in ways that remind me of Cormac McCarthy without the weight. It’s not shy of confronting the cracked ugliness of humanity and finding the beauty between the fissures. Davidson is an incredible writer, and I immediately purchased his more recent novel after finishing In the Valley of the Sun. We need more horror like this.
Favorite Novel Runners-up of 2020
RADIO
by J. Rushing
A jazz-infused, opium-soaked, historical fantasy that explodes from the opening chapter and never relents until its final pages. A thoroughly fresh debut that’s unlike anything I’ve read before. Rushing brings his unique, well-researched world of 1920s Paris to life with a captivating voice. Don’t expect a saccharine overly-romantic version of Paris; this is a stained, broken, and bloody place—a welcome addition to modern fantasy literature. Jim’s a friend of mine, so be sure to read my interview with him.
City of Miracles
by Robert Jackson Bennett
In recent years, the Divine Cities have become one of my favorite urban fantasy series, mostly for its fresh approach to the genre, atypical characters, and serious exploration of themes oft-ignored within mainstream fantasy. With City of Miracles, Bennett wrapped up the trilogy with a heartbreaking yet thoroughly satisfying ending. This story is a bit tighter and more focused than the previous two while wrapping up various loose ends rather nicely. It’s rare to find a final book in a series that resonates with me as much as City of Miracles did—it’s easily my favorite book in the trilogy.

Trail of Lightning by Rebecca Roanhorse
A unique southwestern approach to post-apocalyptic urban fantasy.
Prosper’s Demon by K. J. Parker
A subversive fantasy with a fresh voice and plenty of twists. Nice quick read.
The Crimson Campaign by Brian McClellan
An excellent sequel, one of the best examples of massive and complex military operations in fantasy.
The Field of Blood by Joanne B. Freeman
Phenomenal nonfiction detailing the history of violence in Congress leading up to the U.S. Civil War.
The Cipher by Kathe Koja
Deeply unsettling transgressive horror that felt far too familiar. Visceral and enthralling.
Blood Standard by Laird Barron
A dark crime/P.I. novel with a heart and a sense of humor. I will be reading more in this series.
The Iron Ship by K.M. McKinley
Thoroughly fresh fantasy—huge world, great characters, interesting plot, unique setting. Nearly made my runner up list.

Disturbing modern horror built around the experiences of first-nation people and the rural poor.
Clutter: An Untidy History by Jennifer Howard
The history of stuff told from an all-too-relatable personal experience. Ended up buying a few copies for my family.

The Dead, In Their Uncontrollable Power
by Karen Osborne
Generation ship! Class struggle! Religious ritual! Rebellion! Murder! Control! The complexity told within this genre-mashup was astounding. Such a rich world crafted in a way that feels effortless while maintaining a rich narrative was impressive. It’s no secret I’m drawn to stories that are hard to pigeon-hole into a specific genre, and that is fully represented here. Well worth a read.

Paper Menagerie
by Ken Liu
This heartbreaking story about magical origami, cultural identity, and family was the first piece of fiction to win a Hugo, a Nebula, and a World Fantasy Award. And after reading it, it was easy to see why. Touching and reflective. A masterwork of speculative short fiction.

Preacher: Book One

I didn’t expect to like Preacher. I bounced off the series hard when I was younger, writing off Ennis as a “blasphemous shock jock” and nothing more. But revisiting it as a middle-aged adult revealed a different sort of comic. The offensive transgressive material is still there, but beneath it is something much more—a book with more heart and humanity than one would be able to judge by its surface and laced with merciless satire that still rings relevant twenty-five years later.
Favorite Graphic Novel Runner-up of 2020:
Paper Girls, Volume 2
by Brian K. Vaughan (Author), Cliff Chiang (Artist)
Volume 1 nearly made my runner-up list last year. On the surface, it’s a time-jumping story about a group of friends caught in the middle of a future war. But beneath those sci-fi trappings, there is so much more here. It’s a book about being a kid and the expectations therein, complications with friendship, and the complexities of growing up. The characters are fantastic, and the story moves along at a clip, making it impossible to put the trade down. I’m ready for volume 3.

So this year, I’m including some of the poems I read in 2020. I hinted at doing this last year. But this is really a trial run. In reality, I read more poems than listed below, but I didn’t do an outstanding job keeping track of them. Because this is the first time for poetry on this list, I’m going to skip picking a favorite. Hopefully, I’ll be back on track next year.

So that’s my reading list for 2020. It’s been an interesting year in reading for me. As promised, we now have a poetry section, and I hope to expand that in the future. There are some great poems there, so be sure to explore them further. Despite my ups and downs, I’m overall quite happy with the books, stories, graphic novels, and poetry I read over the last twelve months. They were excellent distractions from the chaos of the year, and it was refreshing to lose myself in other worlds. 2020 will be behind us soon, and I am looking forward to the worlds I’ll discover in 2021.

Pet Sematary - from the novel by Stephen King that I still haven’t read, but I’m going to!
Chaos Walking - movie adaption of the first book in the series by Patrick Ness, which I loooove. Also, Tom Holland!
Spider-Man: Far From Home - Spidey! Tom Hollandx2!
The Goldfinch - I had mixed feelings about the book, but still want to see what they made of it.
Zombieland 2 - there’ll be a Zombieland 2???? Wut?
Kingsman 3 - hmmmmmm....okay.

ive been watching Wallander and im really enjoying it and my favourite character martinson played by tom Hiddleston just said the t-slur the plot line is hella transphobic for this episode and i was really enjoying this episode because it was about a murder of some people who dress up in historical clothes and have partys which if i was to get murderd thats how it would be done it has toatlly ruined it

ECP0644 Ear Candle Productions captures Smile at the Knockout SF 11/17/2006 Cam 2 Tape 2
Smile was a series of shows put on in San Francisco by Neil Martinson, initially at the Hush Hush and later at the Knockout. Neil featured bands with their own unique takes on psychedelia or power-pop and DJ'ed deep cuts from the 60s, 70s, and beyond in between sets.
This show took place at the Knockout on November 17, 2006. Ear Candle Productions brought two cameras, so we are presenting each angle in turn. This is the last half of camera 2, tape 2.
This set features Hard Place, a fun band from L.A. with an over the top glam sensibility. Ashley Huizenga on vocals and keyboard, Freddy Christy on vocals and guitar, Nathan Lee Shafer on bass, and Tom Marzella (who played in all three bands at this show) on drums. Get your hopes up! It's gonna be awesome!
