You wouldn’t say your life revolves around being a mother…but it does.
Most days you wake up, pamper your child, feed him, rock him to sleep, and so on. Your son was like your little best friend when Ran was out and about with Bonten, so of course all you’re gonna talk about is [son name].
And it’s not like you did the same routine with him everyday. There would be times you and [son name] would go shopping, while being guarded by members of Bonten…but hey! Better safe than sorry, right? There would also be times you went out to a small shop or cafe to grab a bite because you were getting tired of homemade food.
Of course it was difficult to do more things considering [son name] was still an infant, but that was only when he was like seven to eight months. Now he’s a few months older! Today is his official first birthday!
You didn’t really plan on making a big deal about it—decoration wise. This was because you and Ran both have no contact with your family’s at all, except Rindou, Obviously.
It so happens [son name]’s birthday landed on a day where an important baseball game is being aired. This led to your loving husband Ran to invite Bonten over for the game, and his son's birthday. Of course he asked you first if it was okay, so you assured him it was alright.
There were only a few times Ran had Bonten over, and those few times you’ve learned to get comfortable around them knowing what they do for a living. It didn’t bother you that much since you are in fact married to one of them, but it’s still horrifying knowing what they’re capable of. However, the main men of Bonten have proven they mean no harm to you or your son. They’re respectful to you, easy-going, and will be the ones to help you with anything if Ran wasn’t around.
And what they really loved about you was [son name]. They had to wait til you were out of the hospital for obvious reasons, but the second Rindou was updated that you were home is the same moment when they all asked if they could go over. They would ask Ran how you were, if [son name] was healthy, etc.
You don’t know what their reaction or thoughts were when they first met [son name], for you were passed out in your bedroom due to your weak body and tiredness. The only thing you remember was how caring Ran was, helping you through the aftermath of giving birth.
From what he told you, the guys were all impatient when it came to holding [son name]. It made you laugh when Ran had told you Rindou practically shoved Sanzu into the bathroom to wash his hands since he was smoking before they got there. You wish you were there though, to see all those men struggling to hold a baby—fortunately no one got hurt.
“Can I try some?”
You feel arms slither their way around your waist, along with someone’s chin resting on your left shoulder. Ran’s cologne immediately attacks your nostrils along with his lips kissing the side of your cheek.
You smile and shake your head, “I don’t think [son name] will appreciate that” You say, still trying to cool down the cupcakes you just took out of the oven.
“He won’t know—” Ran chuckles, softly swinging you two side to side. “—He’s playing with Rin, plus he’s only one” He reminds you.
“Our son is very observant, may I remind you”
This makes Ran hum in agreement, “He’s a weird one…probably gets it from you” He suggests, releasing his hands from you so he can poke your sides.
In response you whack his hands away, causing him to laugh and adjust himself to stand next to you. “Don’t call our son weird” You sternly say, placing down the oven mittens next to the pan of cupcakes.
“Oh I'm just playing…” He drags out, pulling you by your hands to wrap them around his neck while his own finds their way around your waist. He doesn’t yet kiss you, instead he places his lips onto your cheek, then to your forehead, and finally on your jaw. “You’re so beautiful…” He immediately changes the subject, too entranced with your charm.
You’re the first to lean forward and pull him down, connecting your lips together. Your hands that were once around his neck lower to his arms, fingers leaving him goosebumps as they slowly trail down his skin. This caused Ran’s fingers to softly dig into your back as his thumbs circle your sides.
It only lasted a few seconds before you both pulled away at the same time. A smile was plastered on both of your faces, staring into each other’s eyes as if this would be the last time you two would see each other.
Ran raises a hand and pushes some of your [hair, braids, etc.] out of your face. His action alone was enough to help you understand what he was thinking.
You pat his cheek before leaving him one last peck—for the moment. You turn back to the counter, carefully taking out the freshly baked cupcakes one by one and placing them on another tray.
Ran wasn’t satisfied with your farewell, for he positioned himself back to the way he first greeted you in, but this time he was more handsy. His arms snaked back around your entire wasit with his fingers digging into your clothed skin, body pressed right against your back which pushed you closer into the counter, and he reached his head further past your shoulder. His nose stroked up your cheek ‘til his mouth left a tickling breath against your skin.
“Aish, Ran…” You chuckle, attempting to remove your head but his lips always found their way back to your cheek. “Come on, let me finish” You request, for you were not able to do anything from the tight position he has you trapped in.
“C’mon, doll…Rindou’s keeping [son name] occupied. We could keep each other occupied” He voiced with a teasing tone.
You roll your eyes, “when are you gonna call me something else” You ask, reaching an arm back and scratching his scalp which eases his grip around you.
“pretty woman?”
“You flatter me too much” You say in a smug tone, taking your other hand and intertwining it with his that wraps around your lower abdomen.
Ran doesn’t give you a verbal response, he turns you around without giving you any space—basically keeping you trapped. One hand was caressing the side of your face as his own leans forward. His other hand gently goes back to your hips, pulling you closer to him—if that was even possible.
His lips meet yours once again, this time more rough. You of course had no problem with his affection, for your hand finds its way cupping the nape of his neck, and your other cupping his cheek.
His fingers around your hips tap their way up your back, sending shivers down your spine. His hand caressing your face slides its way to the side of your head, tangling in your hair. You noticed how both his hands never stayed in the same place, it seemed he just wanted to touch everywhere.
You knew this couldn’t continue or else you wouldn’t be able to stop yourself from encouraging his behavior.
“mm’kay…Ran—” You tried pulling away from him but he just kept pushing forward. “Ran” your lips twitch up in a smile as his hands begin to tickle your sides.
He finally came to a stop when you put your hands on his waist. He now finds himself cupping your cheeks, ending the kiss after a few more seconds. “Oohh, you're wearing the pants now huh?” he quips, using one of his thumbs to run across your cheeks.
“You’ve always worn the pants, darling. I just tell you which ones to put on” You shoot back, giving a wink along with a squeeze at his waist. You then laugh as he pulls away and rolls his eyes in a playful manner.
Before your guys' lovely moment could continue, you were interrupted by a shout in the other room—the living room.
Ran immediately groaned, “those fucking idiots…” He mumbles, running his hand over his face. “Don’t they know [son name] has sensitive ears?” He rolls his eyes, annoyed with his friend's behavior.
You take one of his hands and rub your thumb over it, “you’re paranoid, Ran. [son name] is just new to having so many voices in the house, he’ll be fine” you assure.
You could tell it didn’t completely convince him that your son was in good hands. Ran was always protective over [son name]. You remember one time when your child was pulling at his own hair, and that made Ran search up if it meant something was wrong.
“Come on, if it bothers you that much” you shake your head, letting go of his hand and making your way out of the kitchen. “He probably needs a diaper change anyways”
Your husband follows behind you out of the kitchen and into the living room where his colleagues and brother lounge around.
Once there you take notice of Mikey’s and Sanzu’s absences. You look over and see they are out on the patio, Mikey just sitting while Sanzu smokes. It seemed they were having a pretty good conversation from the laugh they shared.
On the couch there was Kakucho and Koko talking to each other with a can of beer in their hands. On the other side of the couch was Takeomi making bets on the baseball game with Mochi who sits on the single couch next to him.
And finally Rindou, who was sitting on the carpet while playing with [son name]. He was helping him with a toy where you have to stack blocks up in a pyramid. Your son was very interested in it because of the rainbow color.
You could see Rindou silently getting impatient from how [son name] kept stacking the blocks wrong. You know that expression all too well since it’s similar to the one your husband makes when your guys’ son does something “wrong” on purpose.
“Hey, little man” you greet your son, kneeling down next to him and gently caressing his full head of hair.
“He sure is quiet,” Rindou says, standing up and dusting himself off. “I know he definitely didn’t get that from Ran” He jokes, causing his brother to playfully shove his shoulder.
“Honestly I don’t know why he’s like that. It might just be a phase” You suggest, smiling as your son clings onto you as you stand up.
“You should consider getting him a cat or something”
You all look over and see Koko and Kakucho now chiming in your conversation. “Or y’know, give him a sibling” Koko suggests again, offering a momentary teasing smirk and nod in Ran’s direction.
You and Ran share a glance at each other before lightly laughing it off. A friend for [son name] wasn’t a bad idea, but were you two really ready for another kid? Your first just turned one today.
“Yeah right. The next time we have a kid is when you assholes actually begin to settle down with someone. not some fucking…one night stands” Ran taunts, earning glares and curses in his direction. But he didn’t care, he was enjoying their annoyance.
“Hey!” You slap his shoulder before holding the side of your son's head. “Watch your mouth around him” you roll your eyes, beginning to walk away towards your bedroom to freshen up [son name].
“Shit, sorry!” he calls to you.
“Ran!”
“Dude, just shut up” Sanzu says, entering from the outside with Mikey following behind. “you should be glad little dude doesn’t talk”
“Yeah, but my luck his first word is gonna be ‘fuck’ or something like that” Ran rolls his eyes, taking a seat on another empty couch in the living room. His brother plops down on his right, now occupying the entire sofa.
“What, has [name] never cursed around the kid?”
“no, actually”
“never?”
“…no?”
As the guys talk you shut your bedroom door, doing a little dance with [son name] in your arms since he seemed to like it.
“Alright Bubba’s, let’s change you” You nuzzle your nose against his before laying him down on his changing table. “After that, mommy will add the final touches to your cupcakes and we can sing you happy birthday” You continue talking in a baby tone, making excited faces so he continues to smile.
“Are you happy all your uncles are here? I know you were really happy to see Uncle Rindou” You pinch his cheek. “Too bad you couldn’t meet mama’s siblings”
Your stretched smile downgrades to a small one, ruining the mood for yourself at the thought of your siblings. Two older brothers and an older sister, all three gone, probably having successful lives with their own families.
It makes you wonder if your age gap with them wasn’t so big then maybe they would’ve been here today. You wonder if they all keep contact with each other, and if you ever come up as a topic between them.
“hm…” You sigh as you redress [son name]. “You might not even meet any of your grandparents. Mama and papa don't keep contact with them anymore…”
[son name] obviously didn’t know what you were saying. When you picked him up by his sides and helped him stand, his hands found their way to your face, placing them on your lips, nose, and eyes. You didn’t correct him, for the smile on his face was worth losing an eye.
You nibble at his fingers which cause him to giggle. You would tickle his sides to get a full laugh, but that would mean you’d have to let go of him and raise the chances of him falling.
“But that’s okay. Maybe your uncles will find themselves someone and you’ll have cousins” you assure, mainly for yourself.
You then place a kiss to his forward and hook him back to your hip. “Alright, I know those guys are just waiting for the desert”
you walk outside your bedroom while rubbing your son's hair, bouncing him up and down to get his smile to grow. However, before you could even ask who wants to hold him while you finish the cupcakes, [son name] is already getting taken out of your arms.
You look up and see your husband smiling down at you. “We’ve been waiting for the birthday boy, and the sweets” He says, tickling [son name]’s stomach.
You place your hands on your hips, “I need to finish the frosting, and then it’ll be done” you remind, patting his shoulder and walking past him.
“no need”
You stop in your tracks as you see Koko move from the kitchen table, revealing perfectly made cupcakes with frosting and sprinkles, one had a candle.
Sanzu leans over the one with a candle and pulls back on his lighters gear, creating a small fire before lighting the stick. He then pulls away and walks to the other end of the table where the rest of them were.
“Getting drunk gets them hungry…especially smokey over there” Ran walks next to you and whispers in your ear.
You nod your head, “right, how could i forget”
Ran then sits [son name] down in his high chair as you crouch on the other side of it. Ran leans down and pulls the plate a little closer, using his other hand to rub his son's head in comfort.
“No need for singing, right? it might bother him” he asks, looking at you for permission.
You instantly cup both your hands over the boy’s ears, smiling in assurance. “Haaappy birthday to you—”
As everyone began to follow suit, [son name] looked over at you with a confused smile—wondering why everything went quiet. He then looked over at his dad and gave him a more relaxed smile, for he loved being in the presence of his parents.
His uncles all sat around or stood up, holding expressions you would never think people like them would have. Soft eyes staring at your little boy, singing softly with genuine smiles on their faces.
You internally laugh, remembering the nights you would feel anxious under their stare. The nights these same men intimidated you and would remind you what they’re capable of.
Now they all gather around this table, singing happy birthday to yours and Ran’s son who they would do anything for.
“Happy birthday to [son name], happy birthday to you!”
You uncup your hands from your son's ears and rub his back with your nails. “Blow it out baby” you try encouraging.
Suddenly, Ran leans down and blows the candle out himself. He then takes the stick out and tosses it in a nearby trash can.
You stand up and give him an unamused look. “Really?”
“Oh, you weren’t talking to me?” he laughs.
“Are we doing presents now? i’ve been waiting all night” Rindou suddenly chirps in, already eating a cupcake.
“Yeah, me too. But he needs to open his favorite uncle's presents first” Koko adds, raising an arm as participation.
Rindou sends him a glare, “how kind of you to let me go first”
“Wasn’t talking about you”
“Then your head must be far up your ass”
“Excuse me?”
Ran clears his throat, stopping the feud before it could go on any further. He then picks up [son name] along with his cupcake, “he doesn’t like any of you, only his dad”
“Okay, you know what—”
You find yourself sitting on a chair as they all begin to fight, even Mikey and Kakucho. All arguing about who [son name] favored more. Though, you knew all too well just who your son loved more.
You pick up your glass drink and raise it to your smirking lips. ‘idiots…it’s obviously me’
For the rest of the night the guys stayed on the couch watching the baseball game. Each of them had their turns holding [son name] until he fell asleep in Mochi’s arms.
Ran helped you clean up the mess you made in the kitchen. He even got the guys to clean up their bottles of beer, telling them in a serious tone that he’ll get his ass beat by you if they left a clutter—he was joking.
Now all of them were gone, but not before giving [son name] a kiss goodbye. Sanzu was the only one who gave you a kiss on the head which Ran laughed off since he knew the pink haired male only did it in a friendly way.
But when Ran made a joke about being jealous, Mochi grabbed his head and left a big smooch on top of it which made you and [son name] laugh.
Now you sit on the couch alone, watching the movie “stand by me”. You were drinking another glass of wine after showering, feeling refreshed after another long day of being [son name]’s mom. Though you had to admit, you appreciated all the guys occupying him so you could focus on other things.
“Alright, kid is in bed and now it’s just us”
You turn your head just in time to see Ran plopping himself next to you with a bottle of beer in his hand. You smile at him and scoot over, leaning against the arm rest and throwing your legs over his lap—mainly your feet.
Ran takes a drink of his beer and lets out a satisfied, “ahh” before placing it on the coffee table. He then leans back into the couch and takes one of your feet into his hands, instantly massaging it like he’s a pro.
“I was so close to putting him down on the first try but then he decided to lay one on me” he chuckles, eyes glued to the TV in front of him.
You hum and nod your head, “It was that baby candy Takeomi got him” you remind, lifting a glass for his sacrifice.
“Yeah, I don’t think he was ever good with raising kids. Just look at Sanzu”
You furrow your eyebrows and use your other foot to kick his leg. “Hey, he didn’t ask to be a father figure to his siblings” you remind.
Ran pauses from massaging your feet and lifts his hands in defeat. “Aye, trust me. I know that. we…know that” he says.
“You got that right” you nod, leaning your head on the cushion and admiring your husband's beauty. “Though, I was the sibling being watched over. You were the one watching Rindou”
Ran scowls at the poor memories he has from when his family’s relationship first for rocky. Even if he did everything in the world to get rid of those times, they would always come back one way or another.
“Still wasn’t right how they just left you. You were only like, what? twelve?”
“Hey..” You take your feet away from him and place your glass on the coffee table. “let’s not turn this into a competition” you softly smile, sitting on the back of your legs as you run your fingers through his hair. “Besides, our parents were the one in the wrong. It’s all their fault” you assure.
Ran nods, “just hope we don’t turn out like them…”
You tilt your head, “what do you mean? we’re fine, right?”
“Yeah, it’s just—actually i don’t know what i’m saying”
Ever since the night you proposed to Ran, he’s become more open with his feelings. Sometimes he’d cry, and sometimes he’d get mad. You comforted him every time to assure him he was no longer alone and that he’s more than enough.
However, every now and then he’ll restrict himself from saying certain things. He still bottles up, which you are totally okay with because you’ve learned it’s better to wait for him to be ready than just forcing it out.
“I love you, Ran” you remind him, moving your face closer to his and placing a kiss to his cheek. “We can’t worry about them forever. Plus, we have our own family now”
He wraps his arm around your waist and circles his thumbs against your hips, gently showing his affection towards you. His frown turns upside down as you begin to drown the side of his face with kisses.
He turns just in time to meet his lips with yours, immediately raising his hand to the back of your head to keep it in place. His other continues to massage your hips.
You smile into the kiss before pulling away, lifting a hand to run your thumb across his bottom lip. “You’ve been very affectionate lately. Should I be worried?” you joke, now looking into his eyes that express nothing but passion.
Ran softly caresses your hair. “Dunno, guess I was actually considering Koko’s suggestion” he admits.
You cup the side of his cheek and tilt your head. “Oh yeah? [son name] isn’t enough for you?”
“Oh please, i'm a good dad” he states. He then sighs and bites the inside of his cheek. “Even though I had to take the role of a parent at a young age, I was glad Rindou was by my side”
“Aww” you coo, pinching his cheek before he pushes your hand away. You laugh and relax into a proper sitting position, leaning your head on his shoulder while he continues to brush his fingers through your hair.
You two then sit there for the next couple of minutes in silence. The movie on the TV now had your guys’ attention, being the cherry on top to a perfect day.
However, you were in real deep thought about his words. Another kid? You weren’t against the idea, you just didn’t think right now was the time.
You just finished college, your son just turned one today, and Bonten hasn’t been occupied as much lately which means Ran was at home more. All you really wanted to do was just enjoy these moments and not take them for granted.
“Were both your parents bad, or was it just one of them?”
You turn your head so fast you're surprised it didn’t give you whiplash. “What?” confused at your husband's question that left you in disbelief.
“Like, did one of them actually try their best?”
It took a moment for his question to sink in before you started to think of an answer.
“Well, one of the things I remember my siblings telling me is that they got hooked onto drugs a few months after I was born. So, I guess I never really knew if my parents were always that shitty” you shrug, sitting up straight and lowering the TV volume.
Ran remained silent, so you continued.
“Growing up till I was twelve my parents were always in the basement or backyard. I was trying to bond with my siblings whenever they were home from work. They would only make sure I was fed before locking themselves in one room and hanging out without me. I figured I was just an annoying sibling” Your laugh dies down to a confused smile.
“…But I was always quiet…”
The lilac eyed man slides more down the couch, only being stopped when you wrap an arm around his shoulder, and another holding his hand. “How were your parents?”
Ran sighs and leans his head onto your chest, drowning in your soft touch. He loved the feeling of your fingers caressing his head, and the way your thumb brushes over his knuckles. Your body wash scent made him feel like a baby falling in a deep slumber in fresh blankets.
He lets out a deep sigh, “My father was a piece of shit that turned my mom into a piece of shit” he starts off. “I never liked that man, he was always so rude to Rindou, as if he wasn’t his father”
“Rin? What was wrong with him?” You ask with genuine concern, now twirling strands of his hair with your fingers.
“I think it’s cause Rindou needed glasses. It was a huge payment so our dad claimed Rin wasn’t his son, meaning he shouldn’t have to pay for it, cheap bastard” he mumbles, hand gripping your thigh that it rests on.
You stay silent, letting him take his time in explaining his memories.
“He soon began to believe his own lie which then caused marriage problems. Then my mom started treating Rindou differently, saying he was nothing more than a mistake. That he didn’t belong to the family because she was so brainwashed that she believed our dad” His face scowls, images of that good for nothing father of his sitting down without a care in the world–flashing in his mind.
“Rin, he did…he did nothing—”
You fully wrap your arms around his head, bringing him closer to you. “It’s alright, it’s alright” you shush him, rubbing his back. “Neither of you deserved any of that. You did well by stepping up to protect him” you assure.
Ran raises a hand under your arm and wipes the forming tears in his eyes. He was an emotional man when alone with you, a privilege he appreciates so much.
Although, it kinda bugged him that you weren’t as emotional as him. The last time he remembers you crying was when you two got married—at a secret hall of course. Even if that was just last month, it was still a long time to go without crying.
“I think if my mom stayed one more night, then me and Rindou wouldn’t be in this stupid mafia shit” he admits, pulling away from your hold but keeping your hands intertwined.
You use your free hand to push his hair out of his face. “Your mother shouldn't have left at all, not without warning of course. But Ran, if you couldn’t stand your father, do you think she could’ve?” you ask, lifting his face up to look at you.
“But then why leave me and my brother? huh?” His voice was strained, choking back his tears. “If she loved us so much why not take us with her?”
Your lips part as you shake your head. You zip your mouth back shut and just shrug. “Darling, I question the same thing about my siblings. But no matter how many conclusions I get too, I'll never understand them” you admit, caressing his cheek.
Ran sniffles his nose while shaking his head fast. “I just know if it wasn’t for that son of a bitch…then my mom would’ve been a great grandma”
Your chest tightens at his statement, you swear a piece of your heart just fell into your gut.
Thinking about how things could’ve been different always got to you. Sometimes you imagine your siblings sitting with you when you're playing with [son name], and sometimes you imagine your parents tickling [son name] whenever he laughs at something that’s not there.
However, you never knew Ran thought about the same things. You never even considered the possibilities of him dreading over his mother who left him years ago.
“I’m sure she would’ve been” You agree with him, doing your best to give him a smile. “But now we have to focus on the here and now. [son name] is our top priority now, we can’t give up on him like we once were”
Ran lets out a shaky laugh. “You and [son name]...of course I won’t give up you guys” His sadness was now gone, only anxiety and happiness filling that empty void.
He then wraps his arms under yours and crosses them over your back, nuzzling his nose in the crook of your neck.
“Please…in every universe…can we find each other?”
You pick his face up and plant a kiss on his lips that lasts for seconds, before resting your foreheads together.
“We will, my love. We will”
