#tlt tag game

While we're waiting for Alecto to come out, I thought we could have some fun in the tlt fandom :)
I'm not sure if anyone's done this before, but I haven't seen any so I thought I'd make a tag game. just for funsies.
there's absolutely no pressure to tag or to even play, I just wanted to compile all my favorite parts of the series and I thought it'd be fun to share! so without further ado...
_____________________________
My TLT Favorites
Favorite house(s): 4th and 2nd. (my favorite characters are from these houses, but also something about John creating an army in his resurrected empire and having his soulless "dead kids" be in charge of a house that breeds dead kids)
Favorite book: Gideon the Ninth. my beloved. hands down. every page is fully annotated.
Four favorite characters: Gideon Nav (i love all these characters but no one even comes marginally close to how much i love her), Teacher (he's the funniest mf in here), Jeannemary Chatur (BELOVED), John Gaius (he's literally just some guy, but I'm absolutely obsessed with the verse chapters)
Favorite ship: Jodybeth (griddlehark is endgame ofc but there's just something about these two)
A favorite scene: Nonius vs Wake fight (I'm sneaking in more favorite characters, but I just can never get over how Ortus saves the world with fanfiction. king)
Another favorite scene: Nona's 3rd tantrum (I love to see my women screaming and drenched in blood)
A favorite quote: "Won't you say one real thing to me? Won't you show me one single solitary human thing? Or are you going to die talking to me like it's just another party you wish was over already?" (htn pg. 546)
also "Yes, well, jail for Mother" (htn 498) and "...beneath a blue and foreign sky." (gtn 439). I think about all three of these constantly
Favorite ATN theory: Alecto is a hideous corpse. (not sure what this entails yet, but I love Teacher so much, and I don't think we spent that much time on him for nothing)
_____________________________
Thought I'd keep it short and sweet, but please, please, feel free to make it your own :)
I was intending for this to be a tag game, so I nominate:
@onefleshoneend0 @transbutchbluess @orionsystem6 @koshertaako @susurra-el-arroyo-manso
but like I said, no pressure! just for funsies!
(*updated to add my own notes bc I love seeing everyone else's!)

Behold. Baby Gideon.
So when Harrow has a very bad time while traveling trough the River for the first time in Harrow the Ninth and sees the dead children of the Ninth House, including a baby Gideon with face-paint, the intensity of the moment was kind of dampened by the mental image that popped in my head.
Just the idea of Gideon with face-paint makes me think of her on the cover with the sunglasses. Ergo, baby Gideon with sunglasses.

When you get this, reply with your favorite five fics that you've written, then pass on to at least five other writers. Let’s spread the self-love 💖
Thanks for the tag, beloved @tleeaves <3
1. the last flower
I feel like it would be wrong not to put this as number one. This absoutely unhinged novel-length AU of a classic d*sney movie took so much passion and effort to bring to life and I'm still so amazed at what I managed to do with it. I put more time and planning into this than I have with my original stories, and after a year and a half of writing and publishing the entire product of that labour is out in the big wide world :')
2. unbreak this heart new
I wrote this fic in a couple of hours with no prior planning, motivated by pure insanity, and despite being posted later that evening with virtually no beta, it remains one of my favourite works. Post NtN fix-it fic for Gideon and Harrow (to explain any further than that would spoil most of the book series).
3. her care, so constant
I've written a lot of no plot just cuddles oneshots, but this one remains my favourite. I love to have Gideon being looked after, and just letting herself cry and be held and feel safe. It's an underrated genre of hurt/comfort that I hope to write more of someday.
4. i'm almost me again (she's almost you)
This is another one that took a lot of planning and effort to pull off, though it might not seem as complex as the tangled au. I wrote this for the 2022 tlt fic exchange and was so delighted with my request that I just had to give it my all, resulting in this very weird but very fun piece, starring the tower princes of ntn having a Bad Time.
5. i always see my youth in you
This piece (being poetry rather than fic and hence decidedly short) is probably one of my least-viewed works on the archive, but it still means a lot to me so it makes the list as well. I'm not a pro at poetry, but I feel like this demonstrated the emotions I was trying to convey, and it was such a fun piece that I still look fondly upon.
Tagging @locked-tomb-shenanigans , @manawari , @nooomagnus , @stedesbonnets (I know that's only four people but I don't actually have as many writer mutuals as I thought 😥 no pressure to do this if you don't want and apologies if we haven't talked that much on here before)
That being said, if any writer mutuals I haven't talked to before are seeing this feel free to say hi! So sorry if I've missed anyone.

the notion of “serious fantasy” itself is so funny to me like. fantasy is inherently unsophisticated. it’s fucking make-believe and magic. there’s no difference between you liking game of thrones and a little girl liking barbie fairytopia. all fantasy is gay silly and cringe. embrace it coward

~spoilers for gideon the ninth~
"I know how you can win."
Jimmy's voice is unusually serious. Tango looks up from his notes—he's never revived a warden before, but it's his son, come on—to see his cavalier sitting on the ground, facing away. A cow is resting its head on his lap, and he pets it absentmindedly. For someone whose job is to fight and be strong, he has an unending capacity for gentleness. It's one of Tango's favorite things about him.
"Yeah? How can we win, Solidarity of the Gaming variety?"
And look. Tango's not a fool, at least not most of the time. He knows the difference between you and we. But hopefully this is another Category Five Jimmy Moment and there's no stupid plan cooking in that head. Who knows? For all the time he's had Jimmy, Tango still can't always read that man.
Jimmy turns to face him, startling off the very exasperated cow, and takes a golden apple out of his inventory. "Don't—"
Tango makes an odd sound between a retch and a cry. "No, man. No! If we die, we die together. I'm not just gonna leave you like that, I took the same vows that you did! One flesh."
"One end," Jimmy finishes, more out of reflex than anything. "That's not what it's for. I...I'm not a very good cavalier, am I?"
"You're the best. I wouldn't want anyone else."
Jimmy's getting all indignant, which Tango knows to mean he's frustrated. "You know that's not what I meant! I won't be much help in a fight against Scott or Grian or Etho."
"Hey, come on..."
There's so much that Tango doesn't know how to say. That it doesn't matter if Jimmy's a poor fighter because that's never what he meant to Tango as a cavalier. That after two seasons cut short, Jimmy deserves to make it farther this time. That he doesn't know who he is without his cav, and he's scared to find out.
The first time they died, Tango respawned a few seconds before Jimmy. In the brief absence of the soul bond, crackling nether flames leapt to fill the vacancy. When the ranch burnt down and he wanted to do—something, it was Jimmy who stopped him. Tango wonders sometimes, if he didn't have his cav, would he immolate the world and use himself as fuel? Would the coal mine catch fire?
"It's true," Jimmy insists. "And I know we said anything but last, but Tango, you could actually make it! You could make them take you seriously."
"Not without you, dude!"
"Well, it wouldn't exactly be without me..."
"What? Like a ghost? Jimmy, no, stop."
"Lyctorhood, Tango," he shouts, exasperated.
They stare at each other for a long moment as Tango processes. And then, with lungs full of embers, he says, "No. No! I can't—I can't do that to you, are you kidding me?"
"You'd be unkillable. Think about it—"
"I won't! How can you ask me to do this?"
"You could win, Tango. We could win."
"Not like this," Tango insists.
There's a reason no one on the server has ascended to Lyctorhood, not even Pearl or Cleo, who hate their cavaliers. The thought of it alone sends violent shudders down Tango's spine. He’s torn between distress at the idea and rage that Jimmy would even suggest it.
"Listen to me," Jimmy says, half pleading and half angry. "When the coal mine gets dangerous, that's when the canary dies, right? Well, you need to be dangerous now more than ever."
Then he blows through his horn. The song releases a bit of tension in Tango's shoulders like it does every time. It's the melody of his cav, standing next to him in, well, solidarity.
No response comes. They stopped expecting one long ago, but it's still a brutal reminder that despite the tenuous red alliance, they have no other friends on this server. These people would kill them, rob them, burn their ranch down, and they'd do it with a laugh. They're the punchline to a worn-out joke, not a potential threat.
It's not unbelievable that they'd target Jimmy first and kill him for the meme.
In that moment, Tango understands Jimmy perfectly. Because if he could, he would die to keep his cav alive. Not just for Jimmy, but himself as well, because it would finally mean something.
Jimmy will still die first, but he'll do so on his terms.
Tango embraces his cavalier; after a surprised beat, Jimmy squeezes tight. He’s strong and solid as a cav should be, but the weight is comforting. Tango’s gonna miss that.
“I’ll win it for you,” he whispers in a voice already hoarse with tears.
“For us,” Jimmy corrects.
“For us.”
Tango accepts the apple of out Jimmy’s proffered hand and takes a bite.
SolidarityGaming was slain by TangoTek
<SmallishBeans> lol
<Smajor1995> What just happened??
<ImpulseSV> not again!
...
<Grian> Tango?
Some time later, he has gentle brown eyes where there used to be solid, saturated red. He reaches, and a desiccated paw rips through a graveside catalyst, the closest thing to remains it has. Far below, Grian shrieks as soul lanterns shudder out and sculk blocks wither and die. A skeleton turns to dust in front of Scott, who watches as something draws the particles away. Back at the ranch, a massive rib cage materializes as heart tissue glows blue and begins pounding in an unearthly mimicry of life.
The coal mine burns and burns.

books i read this february:
'the half life of valery k' by natasha pulley
5/5 stars — really enjoyed the plot, romance and characters. also i think it appealed to me because i'm interested in radiation and biochemistry and also history. definitely recommend it
2. 'harrow the ninth' by tamsyn muir
5/5 stars — this book is really difficult to read but it gets way easier in the last quarter of the book so if you're struggling definitely don't give up. i love what it does with the narrator and just generally how confusing it is honestly (it's somehow confusing in a good way). the characters are amazing i love them all so much
3. 'ways of seeing' by john berger
4/5 stars — i really enjoyed this and i felt like it made me consider a lot of things i'd never really thought about in much depth before. i'd be really interested to see a more modern take on advertising like the essay in the book because i feel like advertising's changed a lot since the book was published just in terms of how widespread it is
4. 'the starless sea' by erin morgenstern
5/5 stars — loved the plot, characters and setting so much. i think i preferred it to the night circus just because i didn't particularly enjoy the romance or the ending in the night circus
5. 'the westing game' by ellen raskin
3/5 stars — i read this when i was younger and i think i enjoyed it more then. the plotline's very interesting and i like it but I didn't enjoy the writing style and the portrayal of some of the characters. also angela's character development was kind of undermined at the end in my opinion

lessons on never meeting your heroes, for the title meme? alt; to testify against yourself (from siken's war of the foxes, the full line being "To testify against yourself is an interesting thing, a sacrifice. Some people do it. Some people find money in the street, but you can't rely on it.") if the first one is nothing to you asghdss
first one is everything to me tbh (mostly bc my brain is Too Tired to come up w anything angsty enough to fit a richard siken quote rn lmao)
lessons on never meeting your heroes Set several years pre-canon – at Dulcie’s recommendation that he let loose and read some trashy novel she just finished (the Necromancer’s Marriage Season), Pal finds himself so thoroughly put out with it and it’s sincere lack of substance, that he writes a letter to the author, sparking a long-term personal correspondence between them. Told in epistolary, with short asides told from Camilla or Dulcie’s perspectives throughout the years. The letters chronicle Pal and the author’s deeply polite arguments over plot and substance of trashy romance novels; carefully worded reviews and critiques of every subsequent novel the author publishes after the Necromancer’s Marriage Season; and ends up with them so accidentally ingratiated that Pal ends up as the author’s editor.

OOOH for the WiP meme!! 🤔📄👻
🤔 Do you have any WIPs where you wish you had chosen a different fandom/character? — Not really! Because what draws me to writing fic is usually the characters and the situations I can put them in, and the fic is built around that.
👻Is there a scene that you find intimidating that you have yet to write? — THE ENDING OF MY TLT BANG. I'm putting it on hold for a while and go back to other stuff in the fandom while my brain cooks :D
📝Share a snippet of an unposted WIP, with or without context.
The HtN Dios Apate-centric AU that has been haunting me for 6 months
The long and the short of it is that Joy decides that Harrowhark should not die. She was always a sucker for a nun, she and John both, and together they bundle up the girl to keep her deficient body safe while her soul fights where they truly need her. Augustine doesn’t know how they’ve strongarmed the girl into agreeing, but he doesn’t mind it—as pitiful as the girl is, it’s far too soon for her to die. Gideon’s dull stone face doesn’t give anything away, but little Ianthe looks all too thrilled even as she’s going to her possible death. Oh, to be young and infatuated.
They leave their bodies behind. They fight for hours, from the banks of the River to the depths of the Barathron, and it’s Augustine who finally wrestles the Beast into hell. Good fucking riddance, he thinks, tired and drained, too fraught with nerves to feel victorious. He’s shaking. That’s one ancient enemy they’ve gotten rid of—one of six in a long myriad, and it cost them three of their number.
In the Mithraeum, John welcomes them eagerly. “Well done,” he says, shifting on his feet, looking restless. His voice is charged in a way Augustine has rarely heard before, but he’s too tired to linger on that thought. They won, nobody died; he needs to sleep. Ianthe, the chit, is bouncing with restless energy, finally feeling like a real Lyctor, and so is Gideon, who has never been happy in his life unless he’s killing something. He catches sight of John reassuring Harrowhark as he leaves. It’s ridiculous how diligently God has been cultivating their little almost-Anastasia, with her broken brain and painted face.
“Oh, it’s fine,” he’s saying, as Augustine stumbles away. “Don’t worry about it.”
He sleeps for two days. On the third day, they all eat together; John has assembled plates of flatbread and meats and steamed vegetables, and Augustine picks at the food half-heartedly. The air is not precisely merry—they are all recovering from the onslaught of the Heralds as well as the fight—but it is comfortable and easygoing; Augustine lets Ianthe pester him for stories of the early days on Korionthos, and even Joy appears relaxed. John, oddly enough, barely talks, but he seems very content to listen, a pensive expression on his face.
The next day, Gideon is gone. This is beyond unusual. John would never—he has never—sent them away on missions so soon after a Beast fight. But when asked about it, John only shrugs. “Oh, nothing too taxing, I promise. He didn’t mind.” That, Augustine believes; Gideon is often in haste to leave and find something else to stick his sword into. “He’ll be back soon.”
“If you say so, Lord.” Joy’s voice conveys perfectly her distaste at Gideon’s eagerness to depart his brother and sisters, as though she didn’t feel the exact same way about all of them.
On the sixth day, John invites them to dinner. Just Augustine and Mercy; he says that the girls are doing their thing, with a gesture that hints at the mystery of young people, and suggest they do dinner and drinks on their own.
“I want to try Cassy’s roast recipe, the one with the cranberries,” he says. “The last time I prepared a whole proper meal… well, must have been before I left for the Erebos. Will you humour me?”
He says it so earnestly. His eyes are terrible. Augustine should not wish to look into them as much as he does.

Tag game: tag people you want to know better! (thanks for the tag @shajarat <3)
Favourite time of the year: june-october, because we get rainy/cloudy weather here, and the days don’t get super short like they do at the end of the year (I prefer the dark but I’m not certain it helps me productivity-wise).
Comfort foods: I honestly kind of hate the concept of eating food? I don’t think I’d really call anything “comfort food” but... chocolates, maybe. They’re very important fuel for me. Or pasta. Or naan.
Do you collect anything: rocks! and shells! whenever I travel I always make sure to collect any rock that looks really pretty - sand from beaches too, sometimes. I briefly collected sticks at one point too sjdhdjshd (when I was 12/13 maybe?) I also definitely like to buy physical copies of books, if that counts.
Favourite drinks: any sort of fruit juice (not the artificial kind) or milkshake.
Favorite music artists: I’ve mostly been listening to soundtracks for the past couple months now so uh, we have ramin djawadi, lorne balfe and hans zimmer there. besides that I usually listen to a bunch of lorde, halsey, marina, aly & aj, lana del rey and sufjan stevens.
Current favourite songs: nothing notable! I’ve been listening to soundtracks mostly (the hotd / andor / westworld soundtracks primarily).
Favourite fics: ohhh okay I haven’t even begun to make a dent in the tlt fandom’s fics (I’m sure I could find a dozen more great fics if I ever put my mind to it) but here goes -
1. whatever souls are made of, yours and mine are the same (insult) - the locked tomb - augustine/mercymorn. Rated M.
2. what bodies know - the locked tomb - harrow/ianthe/the body. Rated E.
3. negotiating with the truth - wheel of time - rand/mat. Rated E.
4. like roses and clover - wheel of time - rand/mat/elayne. Rated E.
favourite video games: I don’t play video games At All asjkfhsdf. Not for lack of interest, but I just never got into it.
