Day 23
I will confess, when I started to write as a hobby I didn’t actually like writing. Trouble with spelling and grammar coupled with school writing projects that were too vague in scope and lacked instructional direction killed my love for writing before it even started. I wrote not because I had been inspired to write, I wrote because I was bored.
It was the mid-90s; the high speed internet that makes streaming, Youtube, gaming and social media a thing didn’t exist yet. My Space, the ancestor to Facebook wouldn’t come into being for another 7-8 years. And don’t get me started on the search engines of the time. The kind of algorithm that makes Google scarily effective wasn’t even a thought. Most search engines at the time used a combination of ‘web crawlers’ to collect web sites and human curation to determine what search results you’d get.
At the time, my family just recently installed dial up internet. Dad was so excited to show me, even if all I did was look up Sailor Moon pictures between reading chapters out of a physical book because the pictures took so long to load. But lack of good internet wasn’t why I was bored.
I had, the year I finished 5th grade, undergone a series of surgeries due to a birth defect complication. And even after the surgeries were finished, I had a long road to recovery. I couldn’t sit for long periods of time that school required, and I was often in pain and exhausted. So instead of going to school in my 6th year, I stayed home. An agreement with the school allowed me to just take the ‘core’ subjects in order to move onto the next year, which was English and Math. So you’d imagine, when I wasn’t sleeping, I was very bored due to the lack of work.
I already read a lot in my spare time, and so taking up writing for my English made sense. And, I did. I don’t remember fully what inspired me to write, or why I wrote the things I did. Painkillers tend to make things a bit fuzzy. But by the time 7th grade rolled around I had discovered fanfiction.
Again, I’m not sure how I discovered it. I suspect it was the fansites where I first found fanfiction. Back then, there was no fanfiction.net, or if there was it was a baby. Before fanfiction.net and wiki websites, personal websites were very common. This was because they were free at one point, Angelfire being the most well known of them, and I believe buying your own domain was cheaper back then. At any rate, the fans of any fandom that may have existed at the time owned their own websites and through these sites, curated fanfiction. In fact, it wasn’t unusual to receive requests from other sites for permission to host a story on their site.
I got my start on a site called fanfiction.com, which actually was a coding project apparently if I recall correctly. It had spread by word of mouth, and one of the features of the site was that people could, on top of leaving comments, give a story 1 out of 5 stars. And that’s how stories were pushed to the top of a category. Like I said, this site was someone’s project, and they had left it alone not realizing that it grew without them. I ended up on fanfiction.net when the creator realized what was happening, sent out a notice that the site was shutting down and directed everyone there.
And I guess that was history, so I continued to write. Primarily fanfiction until I entered into university but that’s a completely different kettle of issues. But yea, that’s my story. What’s your writer's origin story?

Stark's Bug
Tony Stark x Son!Reader
=Masterlist=
Guess what? I'm back with another chapter! And also had a revelation when writing but it had nothing to do with writing. It's just that I realized that mammoths weren't mammoths to the people that lived with them is all. Blew my mind straight out the window. Anyway, enjoy.
Words: 2764
Warnings: none
Chapter 19
So turns out that letter your teacher gave you to hand your dad was an invitation for a parent teacher conference so now you and your dad were sitting opposite Mrs Foster who was going on over your grades and work. She was saying that she had been giving you more difficult work that was for 4th graders and above to test her theory.
You were extremely under challanged with the second grade material. And understood more advanced materials with ease. Meaning now you should seriously consider what to do now. And there really were just two options. Skip a grade or be given more advanced courses and material while remaining in the same grades as your friends.
And with that you and your dad were left to make that decision.
Your dad wasn't a fan of the idea of skipping a grade. He feared that you might not be able to befriend older kids that would be your classmates. Not that he told you that but he's just worried. About everything to be honest but especially things that concern you.
The day after the talk with the teacher he sat you down and explained to you in detail what either thing would do. And left you to form your own opinion.
It was a lot to take in for an almost 8 year old. So you did what sounded coolest to you and your friends. And all of you thought it would be really cool for you to skip some grades.
So you told your dad that you want to skip instead of getting advanced work. The teachers gave your dad lots of the curricular of the 4th grade for you to test your knowledge with. So on weekends and after school you got different homework then your peers. 4th grade math, English and such. To everyone's surprise it was easy and didn't took longer than your usual homework. So one more grade was put on the skip list.
5th grade work was harder and at least gave you a bit of a challenge but it wasn't impossible so arrangements were made that if your grades held up you would be skipping 3rd and 4th grade.
You found that very exciting and worked hard despite school not being challenging at all. And when summer break arrived you were given the clear to skip the next two grades. The next school year you will be in 5th grade.
You won't be changing schools though as your school was both elementary and middle school in one. It was just different rooms.
But you didn't have to worry about that yet. Because it was finally summer break and you could lounge about at home and do whatever the f you want!
You, your dad, Pepper, and Happy were all spending the break in New York for the most part. Because they were planning on building a tower there which is cool in your opinion. Peppers idea. What wasn't so cool however was that you had to spend a considerable amount of time inside of office buildings or the apartment they had rented, as both of them were busy and neither really wanted to go outside in this city and cause a ruckus. So Happy was basically a godsend whenever he was free.
When he didn't have to drive anyone around he spends time with you. You actually got to explore the city because of him.
Today Happy was taking you around Central Park while your dad were in a meeting room discussing the buying of some property where they want to build that tower.
You were meanwhile making friends in the park. And were all around having a much more pleasant time.
You were climbing up a tree near the playground when a boy approached you.
"Woah you're really high up!" The boy pointed out. And you were. The branches were getting thinner though so you couldn't climb much higher.
"You're really good at climbing." He pointed out and you responded with a polite "Thank you."
Making your way down you jumped off the last branch and landed infront of the kid.
"My name is Y/n, do you wanna play together?"
"Yes! What do you want to play?" The boy responded in high pitched happy tone, not giving you his name.
The two of you wandered back onto the playground and dug as deep a hole into the sand as possible together.
"Its like a tiger trap." The boy mused and your head lit up with an idea.
"We can cover it up like a trap!" You stood up, wiped the sand off your legs and ran off looking for branches and leaves. Just like in TV.
You told the other boy to do the same and put it next to the hole. Together you covered the hole with sticks, then threw on the leaf litter and topped it off with sand.
It was still clearly visible if you looked for it, but from above it just looked like an average little sand mount.
"Now we only have to wait for tigers to smell the meat." The boy said as he placed a rock on top of the mount as a lure.
"We better hide." You pointed out and the two of you ran off the hide behind a tree to wait for the tiger to come.
And the tiger came. But not like you'd have expected. Happy, who had been reading something on his cell phone before looked up and realized you were gone out of his sight.
He jumped to his feet and looked about the playground not noticing the newly covered up hole in his search for you. With one step he broke the twigs and branches and his foot disappeared into the hole.
You bust out giggling as you ran forward to shout about the tiger being captured.
The boy was more shocked, he seemed flustered and apologetic towards your uncle.
"Are you hurt sir?" He asked shyly expecting the worst.
"No kiddo it's fine. That's a nice trap you two build there. Can you fill it back up so nobody else falls in?" He directed the last question at you. You sighed, nodded and got to work. The boy joined you and soon enough the hole was no more. Happy gave you a thumbs up at that and you turned back to your new friend.
"Eugene, it's time to go." It sounded from the benches not even 10 minutes into your new game. A younger looking woman was waiting there looking over the playground.
You turned your head to see which one of the kids were going when your friend started to leave.
Oh, so his name was Eugene.
You followed him to, what you assumed was his mother. Not really ready to have him go yet.
"Do we have to?" Eugene sulked but was beside her non the less.
"Yes, your mother said she'll meet us at the zoo in 15 minutes. So we have to go now."
"You're going to the Zoo?" You chimed in grinning.
"Yes, what's your name?" The lady who was not his mother asked.
"Y/n, and you?"
"Just call me Claudia. Yes, we're going to the zoo. Are you alone here? Where are your parents?"
"My uncle is right there."
She asked you a few more polite questions a person might ask to entertain a strangers child.
"We have to go now. Eugene be nice and say Goodbye to your friend." She finally said and pushed said boy forward a little. He hugged you a bit too tightly and waved to you as he left. Being polite you waved back.
So that's that.
With a sigh you turned to Happy who was now writing something in his phone. How boring. You wished you had your costume so you could play superhero.
Now that Eugene was gone you didn't know what to do with yourself. So you did the next logical thing and plopped yourself down next to Happy and stared off I to the abyss.
"You ready to leave?" Happy asked after putting away his phone.
"Yeah."
And so you both stood up and started walking along a nearby path. As you were walking Happy pulled up his arm to look at the watch on his wrist.
"We still have about an hour to spare. What do you wanna do?"
A lightbulb went off in your head and your whole demeanour changed in an instant.
"Can we go to the zoo?"
"The zoo? Sure." So Happy being the all knowing person he is turned and steered you in the direction of the central park zoo.
After paying you sprinted from exhibit to exhibit looking to spot as many animals as you could and maybe even spot Eugene again.
Happy could barely keep track of you in the crowds of people. It was summer vacation so lots of people were visiting the small zoo.
For the next animals you walked into a building. Happy however walked past it not having seen you enter it. You were oblivious to his absence and stared at the cute lil snake in it's big terrarium.
When you reached the exit you turned to see how far Happy was lagging behind you. When you saw that he wasn't. Now you were small and he could be just behind some tall people so you waited a little thinking he'd come eventually.
But he didn't. So you panicked. Much like Happy who was backtracking to where he last saw you. Just a few seconds after he passed the exit you came out looking like the scared kid you were.
You were already thinking about how you'd get to the apartment on your own. You sort of know the way, but only barely. And the address was out of the question.
You wanted to cry, but you knew that that wouldn't help. And also you didn't like crying in the first place, much less in public. So with a blurred vision you pushed past groups and families in a blind search for your uncle.
Meanwhile he was debating whether calling the police right now was a bit too early. What about your dad? He would have his head if something happens to you.
You passed the seal enclosure and climbed up on a bench trying to see over the crowd, looking for any sign of the one person that could save you in this situation. Your family and teacher had told you what to do in the case you were in but in your panic everything flew out the window. The whole "stay put" "find a family and ask for help" "find an employee/Police officer" wasn't coming to mind right now. All that was on your mind was that you were alone and scared and in a city that you didn't know.
A woman looked in your direction and frowned. She saw the distressed look on your face and came over tugging along a boy not much younger than you. Followed by an adult man.
"Are you okay, sweetheart?" She asked prompting you to look to her. She saw the tears building in your eyes and knew what happened.
"I can't find my uncle." You said your voice wavering dangerously, confirming her suspicion.
"Sit down sweetheart. What's your name? Mine's May." She said softly laying her hand on your forearm.
"Y-Y/n."
"Alright Y/n, do you know what your uncles name is? What does he look like?" The man now asked, he was crouching down in front of you.
The boy sat down on the other side of you, obviously concerned.
"His na-me is, is Happy but that's not his real name," you explained as the almost crying hiccups in your breath started, "His real name is, is Harold Hogan. And hes taller- than you and chubby. Wi-th brown hair that is short."
May was taking mental notes, the guy sounded sort of familiar.
"And what's your full name, sweetie?" She asked.
"(Full/n)-Stark." You said as the damm finally broke. You wanted to go home, you wanted your dad, you wanted to not be here right now. It was all to much and you just let it out as the younger boy patted your back.
May had been stunned speechless by your name but called into action as your cries reached her ears.
"Shhh, shhh, baby it's alright, well find him don't worry." As she consoled with words she also pulled you into her arms. This was just supposed to be a nice afternoon with Peter and her Husband and now it turned into a rescue mission for a celebrity's child. But you were a child first, and a very scared one at that.
As your sobs quieted down she had made a decision on how to find the man.
"Y/n, are you alright to stay here for a moment? I'll go look for your uncle and you stay here with Ben and Peter, okay?" She pointed at the two people who had accompanied her respectively to show which ones which.
You nodded reluctantly and leaned against the back of the bench. Now with a red nose and slightly puffy eyes.
"Peter, you look over him okay?"
The boy, Peter nodded dutifully and took your hand and started talking after May had left.
"Are you okay now?" His voice was full of concern.
You nodded.
"Do you want some water?" Ben now asked and held a bottle towards you.
"No, thank you."
It was silent for a moment. None really knowing what to do.
"Okay, let's talk about your day then shall we?" The adult tried again, attempting to keep your mind from worrying thoughts, "What did you do today?"
"I was at the Playground. And I played with a boy named Eugene."
"That's nice, me and Peter made breakfast together today. Right Pete?"
"Yeah! We made bug pancakes to surprise aunt May," the boy beamed, " They were bigger than my face and we put syrup and strawberries and stuff on them! Do you like pancakes?"
"Yeah. But I never eat them with strawberries."
"Why not? They're tasty like that!"
"Because Pepper is allergic and so we can't have them incase the strawberry stuff gets on other stuff. It's called cross contamination and it's dangerous if you're allergic."
"That sucks!"
"Hey!" Ben chimed in at that kind of language.
"Do you at least like Strawberries?"
You shrugged. They weren't your favourite but definetly not the worst.
May looked around herself quickly spotting an employee of the zoo. But before she could approach them for help a better option walked into her vision. The man himself looking around panicked, trying to spot the small lost child in the crowd.
"Excuse me!" She half shouted and jogged over to him.
"Excuse me are you maybe looking for a little lost boy?"
Happy's head turned up with a mixture of relief and confusion.
"Yes! Hes about this big, (colour) hair, wears a Blue T-shirt with a lion on it. His name is Y/n."
"That's him, I found him looking for you over there, follow me."
"Oh my God, thank you so much! I can't tell you how grateful I am that you found him!" Happy followed her to the bench were you were animatedly talking with the young boy over various breakfast foods.
"Y/n!"
You perked up at the familiar voice. Before you could even process that your uncle was there you were already swooped up into a hug. Happy visibly relaxed having you back on his radar. With a sigh he put you back on your feet and took your hand in his.
"I don't know how I can thank you Mrs...."
"Parker, and it's nothing really. I'm sure anyone would have done the same." She waved him off.
Happy contemplated before coming up with a thank you thing to do.
Next thing you know you're holding hands with Peter and eating some ice cream together with the three adults.
Peter had taken your other hand as soon as Happy started to walk towards the ice cream vendor and was now talking about everything and nothing inbetween licks of strawberry flavoured ice cream as you wandered through the zoo together. Closely followed by Happy, May and Ben, who you felt very uncomfortable adressing with their first name.
Half an hour later the ice cream long finished you parted ways with the Parker family having turned the bad thing into something great. You've also learned a lot about Peter. Apparently he really likes both animals and Superheroes and was fumbling with excitement when you told him that not only did you have a pet but you also had a superhero dad.
On the ride home you gushed very excitedly to Happy about the boy and his interests. Your new friend was so cool in your opinion even if he was a year younger.
Peter was doing the same on his ride home. Not being able to comprehend that he just met the kid of Iron Man! Who kept a crayfish as a pet! Who does that? He just met someone who did. And he didn't even know he was gonna meet him again not all that long into the future.

no one’s meant to stay  (memoir)
During our first day I didn’t talk to anyone even a hi to my seatmate or anyone who smiles at me. I only talk to my friends out of my classroom during vacant time and get back to being quiet after the given vacant for our recess. Everything went easy on my first week in school full of introduction to each teachers in my subjects. That cycle went for almost 3 weeks but it didn’t last until some of my classmates are approaching me and I already started talking to them little by little and have a short conversation during vacants. Then I met this guy named Jaysen.
Mr. M.P gave us a performance task that needs to be done in less than 2 weeks as we part our ways going to our designated groups we were asked to choose who’s gonna be the leader and assistant, I was chosen for being their leader and Jaysen was my assistant then. After that short voting, we started with the activity. We distributed the task for the short jingle-dance presentation that needs to be filmed as well. While they are thinking about the concept for our presentation I asked Jaysen

After that short voting, we started with the activity. We distributed the task for the short jingle-dance presentation that needs to be filmed as well. While they are thinking about the concept for our presentation I asked Jaysen “ano kanta gagamitin naten para mastart ko na yung sa dance steps naten na related sa math lessons na sinabi”, he answered “hindi ko rin alam eh pero pag-isipan na muna naten ayusin muna natin lyrics” then the conversation stopped there and worked again
Months have passed I already got comfortable with my classmates I get to start a conversation to each one of them if there would be a time. Since Jaysen was my seatmate back then, we used to talk about stuff during vacants. T’was my birthmonth and my 16th celebration was approaching so I invited them to join me on my small celebration at home. That’s when Jaysen started to talk to me everyday, chatting me through my social media accounts, reacting to all of my Instagram stories that was all nothing for me because I didn’t like him that time.
Until one day we decided to stay at my place after our class since we were halfday. Jaysen was there as well, soon as we arrived we ate our lunch already and after that we stayed at our sala played the game truth or dare. Couple of spins were done, until the bottle stopped spinning to me, I got nervous because the game was kinda risky. “ano truth or dare? hahahah” 3 of my friends asked “sige truth nalang ayusin niyo ha!” I answered
I didn’t expect that he’ll be the one to ask me and most of all the question shocked me “kung may crush ka man sa mga classmates naten, sino siya? bawal kj ha” Jaysen asked and he sounded like he was expecting an exciting answer from me that would make his ass giggle. Being the honest one I answered “wala akong crush no, kakasimula lang ng school year crush agad baka gusto niyo muna magpass ng jingle presentation sa math at pumasa hahaha”. All of them laughed like I was lying to them. The 2nd to the last spin of the bottle was pointed to Jaysen, soon as the bottle stopped from spinning he already said “sige na nga para may thrill naman laro natin, dare pipiliin ko na may halong truth hahahaha promise ‘di ako magiging kj katulad nung isa diyan” I only laughed with what he said. “Naks ang tapang mo. kung may crush ka man sa mga kaklase naten at nandito siya ngayon umupo ka sa right side niya, kung wala naman siya dito tawagan mo tyaka mo sabihin na may crush ka sakanya. GO! Hahaha” Neth asked him while smiling like something is about to be spilled.
I was about to stand that time to go to my room and get something when Jaysen stood up and sat beside me smiling. I was shocked because I didn’t expect it but I didn’t mind it and said “kabud nalang ako hahaha kayong mga lalaki talaga manloloko kayo, ‘di meron kang girlfriend do’n sa pagcor building”, everyone were saying “oopss” “naku po” “nilaglag sarili hahahah!” after that we stopped playing already and faced our gadgets.
When that day had passed, it became little awkward between me and Jaysen because of what happened with the game. After 3-4 days he approached me and saying sorry for what he did that made me uncomfortable and said that he and his girlfriend already broke up couple of months ago. I let that pass and we were good with each other. We became more close to each other until one day when we were staying at my friends place he asked me “I will court you okay.” No words came out from my mouth and felt those butterflies in my stomach but thank God when my bestfriend Chin saved me from being awkward again she said “nagugutom na ako ‘di pa ba tayo magmemeryenda?”
After how many weeks, we were back from our late night calls and everyday conversations after class. Everytime I see him coming from afar I can feel those butterflies in my stomach and that was some kind of strange and new. Until I made a reflection on myself, realized that I am slowly liking him already. Things went differently we often go out after class if we have free time, eat outside during weekends. Until he told me that he’ll be courting me for real, he didn’t ask for an answer if I’m giving him the permission to do so. He chose to show his feelings for me even if he doesn’t have the assurance from what he started.
He was really an ideal man, boyfriend material, someone who you would wish to have too as your suitor and boyfriend. Months of courtship, we became officially in relationship and legal with both side. Our 2 months as girlfriend and boyfriend wasn’t that healthy we thought we won’t make it. Fast forward to our 5th month we rarely argue, still the same we go out when we are free from academics. We became more comfortable with each other, telling secrets, movie dates and stuff.
We were given a task in our MAPEH subject, we have to present a role play that involved singing and dancing our section was divided into two groups with 20 members. I was in a group with Jaysen, since they knew that we are in a relationship and to make things more easier we were asked to be partners since our play is Cinderella.mikayIn the middle of our presentation, Jaysen was staring at me while doing my part in the role play taking some pictures of me wearing a red&black cocktail dress. On the part where the prince and cinderella are dancing he gently held my hand and waist while dancing, I felt his sincerity and made me appreciate him more with his actions. After that presentation he escorted me going to the comfort room since I was wearing a 4 inches heels and I had to dress up for our next subject. While changing to my dress to uniform I couldn’t remove my mind’s focus with the way he looked at me during our presentation. After changing, I washed my face to remove the applied make-up and went out the comfort room.
As I stepped out the comfort room I should be asking him to eat for a while because I didn’t ate for breakfast but Jaysen handed me a mineral water and 5 pieces of siomai with a cloud 9. I smiled at him and said “’di kana dapat bumili, aayain sana kita kumain after ko magbihis pero thank you” he answered me by kissing me on my forehead.
Fast forward to when were almost there for our anniversary when something went wrong, I knew that he was talking with his ex girlfriend through messenger without telling me, his friend was the one who told me about that and I was mentally and emotionally blocked. I had these couple of questions to myself are they getting back? What’s with them? Why are they talking behind my back? But I let that pass and waited for him to tell me the truth but him being the asshole didn’t confess and acted like nothing’s happening during those time. I started to confront him the next day before our exam, asked him if there’s something that I need to know but he refused to say the truth and answered me “wala naman akong ginagawa na ikakasira ng relationship natin tyaka I’m not betraying you don’t mind it any—” I slapped him and showed him a screenshot of Jaysen’s ex girlfriend conversation with him and a picture of them both kissing that was sent to me. I didn’t let him to explain his self, I left him in the classroom and went to my next class.
My situation didn’t went that easy. The man whom I expected a lot that won’t break my heart and ate all his promises. After a year of suffering from the pain that he gave I saw myself change the old me is slowly fading, the old passionate lover and risk taker in all aspect was already gone. Couple of months ago I was about to leave the house going to school when my phone vibrated with an Instagram notification that says someone sent me a direct message from a guy.mikaynamed Thirdie, he’s from Italy, also he was a former schoolmate of my bestfriend. We often talk after I attend school since phones aren’t allowed.
He flew back here in the Philippines and decided to study here for his 12th grade. His place was somewhere at Mexico, Pampanga. A month ago was our term test, I asked Nen and Doy why don’t we meet and review for the heavy subjects to examine on they agreed and meet up at Bon Appetea, Sto Domingo. His place was somewhere at Mexico, Pampanga. A month ago was our term test, I asked Nen and Doy why don’t we meet and review for the heavy subjects to examine on they agreed and meet up at Bon Appetea, Sto Domingo. I knew that Thirdie was just kilometers away from me, after 4hours of reviewing our lessons, Nen asked us a favor if we can help her to get her things from a friend in Tinajero, fortunately Thirdie was also there catching up with his friends since he was away for a long time. 2 hours have passed we went to Tinajero to get Nen’s things and we decided that we will immediately go home when she have her things already.
But we were asked to stay by her friends to play a mobile legends for a while, they were all playing except for me because I didn’t had the mood in playing instead I read my reviewer. It was 6 pm when we are about to go home and about to call a tricycle to ride on going to the terminal, but Thirdie called me on my phone saying that he’ll drive us home. That made me think that he’s gentlemen and kind not knowing that he has a crush on me at that time. Week after, we used to talk to each other and get comfortable with each other asking how was our day, updating each other and stuff. He’s understanding, kind, gentlemen and has a big respect to woman kind of guy. To make the story short we had our 3 days retreat, 2 days no phone. We weren’t able to have conversation but that was okay with us, he was very understanding with the situation we had during my retreat and I appreciate him for that. The night after our retreat, everything was like a popped bubble. I didn’t received any kind of message from him anymore, even a message that he’s gonna stop talking to me he just left like nothing.
All I thought he was the answer to one of my prayers. I could only think of him everyday, dreamed of him every night. But all I could do is to let this things pass by, let him go and let myself breathe again from pain. Maybe he is meant to be a blessing and a lesson for me, we were only meant to meet to learn something new and get challenged with that kind of situation. I don’t blame anyone with what happened because I know everything happens for a reason and something big will come in exchange for what was lost.

Hey friends! Happy Thursday! Hope you’re enjoying the week.
It’s been a fun and crazy one over here. The girls have had half-day camps, Liv auditioned for dance team, the Pilot has been flying nights, and madre’s birthday was on Tuesday! We got together for a *small* family dinner (we joke that we’re just a small party of 28), and ate Mexican food, cake, and sang “Happy Birthday” to the amazing lady who gives so much to everyone in our family.
My fave picture from the night!
(The cake was from Whole Foods bakery and so so good.)
Workout-wise, I’ve crushed every day this week. Sunday, we filmed Summer Shape Up videos (the party starts June 24)! Monday, I hopped on the Peloton bike for a 30-minute ride, Tuesday was barre, Wednesday was a BODYATTACK class On Demand (my link is good for 21 days FREE of the amazing Les Mills workouts), and today and tomorrow are off since I’m traveling to Chicago for a blog trip. I’m looking forward to catching up with Anne and Julie, and meeting some new blogger friends. I’ll be sure to share some of the adventures on IG stories!
I originally planned to post this one while we were on our cruise, but since internet was a bit sketchy – and I blasted through the ship’s plan in a mere 24 hours – I didn’t get the chance to get this one published. I originally saw this survey on my friend Ashley’s blog, and then Julie’s. I loved reading their answers so much, so I thought I’d join in the survey fun.
1.  What’s the best thing that happened to you this month? Taking a Disney Cruise with the fam!
2. What’s your favorite game? We don’t usually play board games at home, but our favorite games is a hide and seek and tag hybrid. I hide, the girls try to find me, I jump out and go “AHHH!” and they scream, I chase them around until I tag them, and then they hide.
3. When are you most inspired? Mid-morning, usually after I’ve had breakfast and survived the school drop-off.
4. If you could teach one subject in school what would it be? Math
5. What’s your favorite beverage? LaCroix
6. What’s the best compliment you’ve ever received? A friend from the gym sent a text message while the Pilot was deployed and basically gave me a pep talk. She said she was proud of me for doing so well with work stuff and solo parenting. It was very unexpected and really made my whole month. It was a great reminder to let other people know when I’m inspired by them or think they’re crushing it.
7. What is your favorite birthday cake? Yellow cake with chocolate buttercream
(That was my bday cake last year!)
8. What is one thing you still have from your childhood? A photo album that my mom made for me when I was 4 and we’d taken a trip to California. I was with all of my aunties, my parents were still married, and my uncle was still alive. Our dog chewed around the edges of it when I was younger, and the small plastic photo album contains quite a few happy memories from being a kid.
9. What is your favorite movie? Love, Actually
10. What is something you can’t do? Play the flute even though I faked it for an entire year in 5th grade. I could do all of the finger work, but no sound would come out. So I just pursed my lips and acted like I knew what I was doing.
11. Window or aisle seat? Aisle so I can get up a thousand times if I feel like it.
12. What makes you laugh no matter what? P makes the most ridiculous faces that make me laugh every day. We get a kick out of zooming in on photos that she’s in, because you never know what you’re going to get.
13. What does creativity mean to you? Free from any perceived restraints or judgments.
14. What are your favorite lyrics of all time? “Look around, look around, how lucky we are to be alive right now.” I don’t think I’ll ever get sick of Hamilton.
Or hanging out with Betsy
15. What is your favorite holiday? Thanksgiving
16. What’s heavily played on your music playlist right now? “Far Too Good” by John Smith.
17. If you could raid one woman’s closet who would it be? My friend Annie’s! Whenever she posts Instagram posts, I want her outfit and her shoes
18. Must have purse item? Color Intense lipstick in at least 3 shades
19. What did you want to be when you grew up when you were 12? On Broadway
20. What is something you will not be doing in ten years? Wondering where the heck we’ll be living in a couple of years. It’s so crazy to be able to know and plan where we want to live.

24. What is your favorite dessert?  Anything super chocolaty.
25. Is there a dessert you don’t like? Creme brûlée is gross.
26. It’s brunch! What do you eat? Eggs, breakfast potatoes, turkey sausage, and a mimosa because brunch without cocktails is just a sad breakfast. <— words of wisdom from Prep & Pastry
27. Where was the best vacation you’ve ever taken? Positano

35.  Where does one go on a perfect road trip? To Sedona. It’s just an easy drive from us and has an incredible energy.

Delaware does not exist
Pennsylvania does not exist also it is where the magic treehouse series takes place
new jersey does not exist but it has the highest population density you think
Georgia has barbed wire fences between the yard of your grandma’s house and the cattle fields behind it. you climb the fence to pet a cow and the owner of the ranch comes out immediately holding a large rifle. your grandma hands you a gun wrapped in a blanket which you previously thought held curtain rods. she tells you it is the same gun which Oswald shot the president from the book depository with. you know what to do.
Connecticut does not exist you always forget where it goes on the map when your 5th period English teacher requires you to draw the entire united states by memory
Massachusetts does not exist Pittsburgh Massachusetts
Maryland does not exist but it does have some nice gardens
south Carolina is a place where you vaguely remember meeting a very large turtle?
new Hampshire does not exist and you always got it mixed up with
Virginia does not exist it is also the state where the largest earthquake in history occurred you think. you are not certain as you have not checked that fact since fourth grade.
new york does not exist. the triangle shirtwaist factory fire brought new standards of safety regulations to America. what a tragedy it was.
north Carolina is where you store your plane station. the only thing to buy at your plane station is large cups of fruit. buy those fruit cups.
Rhode island does not exist
Vermont does not exist but it is where the book nature girl takes place which is the first book you ever did a report on in middle school. you were so proud of the report when you read it the entire class applauded and cried. your teacher then told you you should quit 6th grade and live in the dome in the desert from the first season of Roswell.
kentooki is the homeland of the chicken in surfs up who inexplicably has a burning passion for surfing after his father’s untimely death
Tennessee is just a vague memory at this point. you are lucky to remember it. most people get hunted down by the Tennessee memory erasing skunk apes as soon as they leave.
Ohio is where you first drove a tractor. it was in your grandpa's backyard next to one of the sheds but not on the farm territory itself.
Louisiana does not exist but apparently according to the magic treehouse series it’s super haunted.
Indiana is THE LAND OF THE FREE BECAUSE OF THE BRAVE
Mississippi does not exist but your dad lived there in the 70s
Illinois is where you saw your 6th ufo in your life. you were flying over lake Michigan, about to land at the O’Hare International Airport on May 27th, 2017. you watched the clouds outside your airplane window as three yellow lights in a triangular formation flew into your sight, they hovered for a few seconds but were soon gone.
Alabama is a place you have been but your memories have been erased.
***also, have y’all heard witch’s rune by S.J. Tucker because that's a real good song. *****
Maine does not exist except for in your 3rd-grade math class where you graphed the weather in both Portlands.
Missouri is the most popular launch point for the Oregon Trail, Independence, Missouri. 1861 was the year in which the most people traveled the Oregon trail although at that point most people were going to California.
Arkansas exists but does it really? how confident are you in your memories of Arkansas.
Michigan is nothing to you but a series of dark hillside roads.
Florida is where you learned to talk. you wished you did not later but then you are glad you did. you sit in a dark room. it is not really dark but you choose to remember it as being dark because our memories are all basically fake anyways. you are playing with blocks in your living room while your grandparents sit at a table talking quietly. you overhear that your brother was born in St. Petersberg. there was a birth complication but that's ok because you are two and you don’t know what that means. at the hospital, there is a playroom for the kids there. there is a boy playing a Mario game there. it is the first time you have seen a video game. there is a rainbow bean bag in the corner. you choose not to sit on it and manage to wander out of the room and there is a tv in the waiting room you are in. they are still talking about Katrina. you are glad the hurricane you were in was not Katrina.
Texas is a place you wish you did not remember
Iowa is a place you only remember by its bordering fireworks sales. that’s how you know your leaving a state.
Wisconsin is overrated in your opinion
California is the first time your brother slept in a tent. unfortunately, your dad forgot the rain cover for your tent and so your tent floods at 2 in the morning in the middle of the redwoods and you sleep in the car instead.
Minnesota has the best airport you have ever been to. why the heck do they have ipads everywhere that you can just use for free? Like you don’t know if they still have them since you haven’t been there since 2010 or 11 but still.
Oregon is where you convinced all your friends that you were all witches and there was a horde of black snakes which live and travel through the wires. it is also where you went to school so that makes sense. it is also where you were camping and you got mad at your parents when you were like 12 so you ran off into the woods and you met faeries for the first time and they convinced you to go back to your campsite and were generally really nice even though faeries really get a bad rap from Tumblr. and anyways, it’s also where you saw your first ufo and its also where you were abducted by aliens for the first time.
Kansas honestly means nothing to you. you don’t even remember it. if you don’t remember it is it even real?
west Virginia doesn’t exist.
Nevada is where you launched a road trip once. it’s also where you went on route 66 for the first time. you got into a Hilton inn at like 2:06 am and you left at 6:27 the next morning so you barely spent any time at that hotel. you went to wet n’ wild Las Vegas afterward and it was really fun but unfortunately, you almost fell off of that one really steep slide because you barely met the weight requirement and you were really dumb and you jumped into it instead of sliding into it like a smart person.
Nebraska is an underrated state in your opinion. It is where you got your own room key at a best western in Ogalala in room 212. the pool had just been refilled so it was really cold but you swam in it anyways because you’re like that. there was a dragonfly in the pool and you saved it and after it dried off it repaid you for saving its life by playing a game with you since your dad refused to get in the pool because it was so cold. you raced the dragon fly around the pool and you quickly became friends. later that afternoon you couldn’t find the ice and so you asked it and it led you to it.
Colorado is where you bought some really good bread this one time in 2014. You also drove through there on a different occasion and you thought it was really pretty but you were also really distracted by a coloring book your grandma gave you.
North Dakota doesn’t exist
South Dakota is where you bought your favorite book as a young child about the conservation of the black footed ferrets. you also took lots of foggy pictures of Mount Rushmore on a disposable camera.
Montana is where you stopped at a haunted rest stop. it didn’t explicitly say it was a haunted rest stop but the faeries in the trees told you it was.
Washington is where you caught your first lizard. you were hiking on a trail in the gorge and you saw a stream nearby and there was a fallen tree across it and on top there was a blue-tailed skink.
in Idaho You collected your first Hag Stone along the banks of Snake river.
****Wonders by S.J. Tucker is also a very good song******
Wyoming is where you became friends with a stag which was stood on top of a hill which you then climbed after it and found it was looking for water since it was new to the area. you led it to your uncle’s river and in return it promised to help you and it did help you by leading you to a berry bush which had really good huckleberries.
Utah is where you stayed along the salt lake and you watched the sun set over a field of horses.
Oklahoma is somewhere you’ve been but you don’t remember being in.
New mexico is where you swam in a pool in the middle of nowhere long into the night and you were able to see the stars which are normally blocked by portland’s light pollution or currently it’s horrid wildfires. It was beautiful.
Arizona is where you hiked along a worryingly narrow area of the grand canyon.
Alaska does not exist.
Hawaii is a place I really miss if only for its passionfruit. man does it have really good passionfruit. @bbyrealm you go there a lot sneak me passionfruit thats really good back. you might want to ignore this though because its 2 am right now and that means it took me 2 hours to write this post.

The iPhone and iPad have completely changed the mobile technology in last few years. For any Apple fan, these devices have become an essential part of their lives. Apple’s App Store has an app for almost every conceivable task, so why exclude the most important; that of education.
Some educational apps are tailored for high-school students, some for soon-to-be college graduates, and others still, are more apt for those who provide an education or those who still pine for knowledge long after school lets out for summer. In this article, I have compiled a list of 12 Best Education And Learning Apps, which can improve your language, memory, and many skills in different categories. Most of these educational apps are free, though some include in-app purchases to unlock additional lessons.

The growing importance of speaking multiple languages in order to communicate with others, be it for business or personal reasons, makes language tools highly desirable. Duolingo allows users to learn a new language (or multiple languages) at their leisure directly from the app. Currently, Duolingo has educational games for learning English, Spanish, French, Italian, German, and Portuguese along with other languages for users to choose from. While it can be difficult to commit to other types of language learning programs such as Rosetta Stone due to the monotonous methods of teaching, Duolingo makes learning a new language a fun and fulfilling experience by making it a leisure activity as opposed to a dull educational practice. From standard vocabulary to understanding grammar, Duolingo offers a comprehensive understanding of all language aspects and even assesses progress to ensure that users get the most out of the application.

A Message From the CEO:
About 5 years ago I took a year off from college to help pay for my tuition and completed a year of service with Americorps and City Year Los Angeles. I was living in South LA and was thrown into a 5th grade classroom adjacent to the wonderful human in the photo- Dhaujee Kelly. I could write endlessly about the impact that year of service had on my life and how I ABSOLUTELY got more than I gave. I worked all year in the classroom with my 5th graders on math, language arts, reading, etc doing everything in my power to help get them on track with basic skills despite everything in their external environment working against them.
I just kept showing up. Everyday. Some days were harder than others. Some days I had no idea if I was making a difference. Some days my students would surprise me.  And some days I would be handing my students off for pick-up and I would see a look in their parent’s eyes of humanity- despite the language barrier. A look of exhaustion, appreciation, and most of all gratitude. That’s when I knew.. I was in fact making a difference.
June came along and summer vacation was weeks away. My students, who I spent all year working with were about to go off on a 2 month break away from all the structure, support, and the positive influence container we had created. I asked: “what are you guys doing this summer?” they answered: “I don’t know Miss playing video games, babysitting my cousins, hanging around the neighborhood”. Not summer camp, like I had been lucky enough to attend as a child. My heart sank because I had no idea what would happen to them after school ended. I knew what they faced outside of our container so I went online those last few weeks and desperately tried to find any sort of low-cost summer camp. Nothing. Existed. There were awesome robotics, engineering, arts camps that ran anywhere from $300-600 PER WEEK. The majority of my students received free or low cost lunch subsidies in school. Study after study shows summer is when the achievement gap widens between affluent and low-income students. Trust me, we’ve spent the last 8 months researching it.
I was lucky though!! I got to escape their reality and go back to my life, continue my college education, and graduate with a 4 year degree. I got a corporate job, I worked for 2 years and life was great. But it wasn’t. This is the part of ancient literature known as “THE CALLING”. I was hit in the face with this GREAT responsibility to be DOING something and I didn’t want to ignore it. So I did something. I texted Dhaujee this frantic, excited, inarticulate, passionate idea I had. She goes “same page, let’s do it”.
HERE WE ARE. Keep reading.
It’s November 2016 and we want to create, operate, and somehow fund a FREE?! high quality academic summer camp for 30 at-risk students THIS summer aka in 8 months. From absolutely nothing. Yeah. Trust me. We had a lotttt of non-believers. We were even kinda like huh... yeah... this is pretty huge to try and take on. I woke up some mornings and was like oh my what did I get us into. What are we doing. How is this going to happen. That’s it, how do I turn back. But I also had this faith and other voice.... That everything would work out. We’re Molly and Dhaujee, it’ll happen.
And that’s the BEST PART. Every time those thoughts crept in, the universe said stop being dramatic you’re DOING THIS. And so, the universe just truly became a CLEARING. In every sense.
2 months after we started I pitched the idea to my circle of friends and my coworkers. That next week I had 15 people in my one bedroom apartment volunteering their time to make sure this happened, spreading our mission in the community. Then, we had a creative team create ALL of our design, media... everything, again, from NOTHING. Practically pro-bono because they believed in this project and what we were out to do. THEN, the 2 most stressful parts... fell in our lap. We had a prominent, well-respected community center offer us an entire building on their campus for ONE-FOURTH (1/4) of the cost of what every university and college had been quoting us. And it was open and they were so excited to fill the space. THEN we needed an event space to hold a fundraiser so we could operate this summer. We had an amazing venue let us have our gala for ONE-TENTH (1/10) of what every other space in LA was quoting us. AND THEN I had a former Bentley U classmate and friend offer his family business to donate all the supplies for our students for the summer.
So in many words...the universe decided it was.indeed.happening. And then we started getting campers.
But we’re not there yet. Despite having the skinniest budget of any high quality summer program ever in existence, we still need about $50k. To cover our insurance, lunches/snacks, transportation, field trips, payroll, volunteer stipends, etc. We’re about 1/4 of the way there in thanks to the many many generous people in our lives and the community.
To conclude, it’s decided that I’m taking a stand- if that wasn’t already obvious. I’m taking a complete and total stand for all students, no matter their zip code- to have access to summer camp, to have a place to be a kid, to have a place that keeps them on track and college ready, and to have a community that supports them to reach their full potential.
THIS Thursday, 5/11 we’re having our inaugural fundraising gala in Venice, CA. The theme is a summer garden party. The goal is to raise the other $40k we need. If you’re not in the SoCal area but are feeling inspired by our mission and our commitment to students please consider donating to the deserving kids who are about to have the trajectory of their lives TOTALLY changed this summer. You would be apart of that and we’re hoping you will be. Any way you’d like to be involved we will welcome you: services, supplies, spaces, etc. If you’re not in the area also don’t worry because we’ll be coming to a city near you soon enough. Thank you for reading and thank you to those reading that have already supported. Thank you for making this possible. Thank you to Dhaujee, I need another 3000 word blog post to thank you and give you all the credit you deserve- you’re an educational genius and this collaboration is a dream. Thank you for being in this with me and being the reason this is happening. Ticket link in bio or urbansummeracademy.org
Cheers!
Your CEO,
Molly A Godfrey

21. What is an important life lesson for someone to learn? Your gut instinct is always right.
22. How do you start your day? Scrolling through my phone with one eye closed.
23. Would you ever live anywhere besides Tucson? Yes! We’d love to make it back to San Diego one day but love being in Tucson for now.
Positano
28. Favorite Disney animal? Stitch
29. What is a book you are planning on reading? “Educated” is downloaded on my Kindle but I haven’t started it yet
30. What did you read most recently? “Where the Crawdads Sing” and loooooved it
31. Favorite solo artist? Michael Bublé for life
32. What is something you’re tired of? The Instagram algorithm. They want to turn it into a “pay to play” platform, which was the downfall of Facebook
33. What’s a city you wish to visit? Paris
34. Heels or flats? Wedges
35.  Where does one go on a perfect road trip? To Sedona. It’s just an easy drive from us and has an incredible energy.
36. What do you do on a rainy day? Try to find indoor activities to entertain the kiddos! We’ll do art, visit a museum, go rock climbing, or see a movie
37. What’s your favorite exercise? Spin, barre and BODYPUMP are tied
38. What was your worst subject in school? English which is a hilarious thing since I write a blog for a living
39. What is your spirit animal? An otter. I want to spend the day in the pool, floating on my back, eating salad
40. What do you usually eat for breakfast? A giant egg patty and either oatmeal with almond butter or a brown rice tortilla
41. What do you usually eat for dinner? We change it up every night but some classics are salmon, sweet potato and salad, Harney Cobbs, or sushi roll bowls
42. Cooking or Baking? Both!
43. Favorite baked good? Cookie dough on the bottom, Oreo’s in the middle, and brownies on top
44. What is something you wish you could be good at? Organizing photos on my laptop. It’s a hot mess

54. Best fashion advice you’ve ever received? If you have to convince yourself that you like it, you’ll never wear it, so don’t buy it
55. What is your current favorite piece of clothing that you own? These embellished sandals. I wear them all the time and am constantly asked where I bought them
56. Shoes or Bags? Bags! I love a good crossbody
57. How do you know if you’re in love? When you know, you know
58. Television show you’ve binged on recently? The Bachelorette! We’re almost caught up for the season

So without further ado, here is the list.
1. Duolingo

Duolingo

The one thing I regret about school or studying in general (long post, like hella long man)
I think there are many regrets when it comes down to how you have spent your early years in life whether it be socializing, having fun or just studying. I’ve seen a lot posts and people saying that they regretted not having more fun in school or not paying attention in class, or anything similar to that. I wanna add something to that. I also wanna post a solution to that as well. Now you’ll have to excuse my english and grammar (pls no hate).
One thing i realized, now that I’m in my second year of college, is that i regret not pushing my parents to put me through private classes/tuition classes. I noticed early on during the one or two years that my parents put me through private lessons that I did REALLY well in school. Like, i was put in private classes for flute lessons, and it made me get the first chair (which is like the top seat in band class) during my 5th grade. Or in 6th grade, when my parents put me in a tuition class for math and i really excelled in Algebra 1 during that year. But being the whiny and lazy shit that I am, i didn’t want to continue those classes. Partially because i realized that we were financially struggling and also because i was just plain lazy (i admit i was a piece of shit). Now i realize that most parents (of asian decent especially) push their kids to do hundreds of these private lessons and classes to make their kids be the very best with no regards of their mental stress level or what their kids might be feeling. And my parents probably didn’t want to put that amount stress on, so they never pushed for me to go through this.
But you know what, I really wish they did. Now im not putting all the blame on my parents and i really do appreciate that they didnt bombard me with school and studying all the time. But this really caused me to take on harder classes (while failing them lol) at school to show that I am smart and that I need to raise their expectations of me, When my parents just told me to do whatever the hell i want (not really socially but in terms of studying), and when they said they have no expectations of me, it felt like it implied that they thought i was just plain stupid and i wasn’t worth their time.
I wanted to decrease their financial burden and i tried studying for myself, but obviously i wasnt doing it right, so i didnt really do well in my classes. Even now im struggling because I dont know how to properly study in the way thats right for me.
Now for my solution:
I know my future kids wont have the same learning style that i did, where tuition/private classes helped me learn. But i can try putting them through them to test out if they are able to get help from them. I’ll try putting my expectations on them. I wanna try pushing them, but with caution. I know that if my kid is excelling in their classes because of the private lesson, then I’ll ask them whether they think its helpful to them and whether they want to continue doing them. If they dont like them, even after seeing the positive results, then ill make a deal (a contract you could say). They’ll have to give up a little bit (i dont know how long those classes would take) of their time and do these private lessons for me, because regardless of what they think is “fun” for them, i want them to grow up with the right habits and understanding. In return, i wont yell or scold at them constantly outside of this allotted time to constantly keep studying. They can play whatever games or go outside do whatever they want (Keeping in mind they have homework to finish, tho). I wont deprive them of having fun and socializing. I know its needed. Afterwards, when its time to go into college, they are free to do whatever they want. I will never bother them about their studies or anything because i trust that they will have the correct habits to study on their own.
On the other hand, if my kids dont find good results coming from their private lessons, then there are three cases at play here: 1) the private classes is not very good or isnt compatible with my child’s learning style 2) my kids arent putting enough effort 3) they really just arent getting no matter how hard they try. Now with #1, i can easily find other methods or classes to put them, if they want to. With #2, I have to somehow make them understand the importance of putting in this effort now, i wont pressure them to do this if they really dont care or dont want to do it. In the case of #3, I’ll just work with whatever passion, or thing they really want or are good at (like art or something).
I know for sure with the “contract” thing is to make sure that I keep my promise, and i won’t abuse my “right” or whatever as a parent to bully my kids into doing what i want them to do. I want to treat them with respect and make sure they understand that everyone in the house is responsible for their actions. If i make a mistake as a parent, they can put a “check” on saying, “hey mom, i dont think what you did the other day was right, i was feeling like so and so, and i think its better if we could do it like this from now on, is that ok?” and i’ll gladly take in that thought and work with it along with them. I dont want them to bottle up any stress or whatever “injustice” they think is going on. And supposing they think whatever i’m doing wrong is not actually “wrong” per say (idk how to explain this, like they think making them clean up as a chore is wrong, when really its teaching them to be good people around the house kind of example), ill have to explain to them why doing these things are good for them.
I know i kinda went off track here but i want to explain how i wanted my family to run when i was growing up. I grew up thinking sometimes why in the world do i have to do this around the house or make sure that im studying for the classes without help from others and shit like without any sort of explanation. I assumed things on my own and it resulted to me regretting all sorts of things.
I dont want that for my kids.
I hope they understand this.
