Some random thoughts on Obey Me! Nightbringer up to lesson 10 (with LOTS of spoilers)

If you ask why I'm making a post like this in this blog is cause I will defend that this is a queer coded game to my last breath –and cause is my blog and I do what I want.

Full disclosure: I'm not done with the first game yet so no spoilers for that one please. I'm guessing I'll get spoiled by Nightbringer anyways as the story progresses, and I already did lol, but I wanna gush about this game because I love it so much already.

Starting with the title screen, oh my gosh the art is beautiful. 10/10 would definitely buy a poster of this.

They continue using they/them for MC and that's a thing we all gotta appreciate. Thank u.

The layout and the art of the game is just SO PRETTY in general. Definitely an upgrade from the first game, credits to the designers and artists.

It's a rhythm game!! I like it, the gameplay is easy enough and in classic Obey Me fashion you gotta be really precise when you click or else, which adds a good layer of difficulty.

We don't have 8 different types of support items, just 4, which makes it easier to keep count of how many we have. I am still broke in-game to buy them tho.

WE CAN GET DEVIL POINTS BY COMPLETING LEVELS THANK U SO MUCH. In contrast, I feel like they give less materials when you clear a stage? I mean, they gotta balance it I guess, or maybe is just me.

The game was lagging like hell when I first started playing tho. Idk if it was the game or my phone that couldn't run it or what, but it's fixed now.

I love the fact they're using the character songs for the levels!!! I was waiting for the unit songs and they took a while, but they're there too. The remixes are fun and I can't believe how good they sound.

Speaking of sound, this game's ost is SO GOOD like huh? I was kinda expecting it cause it's a big production and all but bruh. Every now and then I end up having to stop because I gotta appreciate the bgm. There was this one funny song where a banjo started playing and I straight up laughed out loud. 10/10

Coming back to the layout and the designs: THERE'S SO MUCH RURI HANA IN HERE!!!!!! Love it. 20/10. Best thing ever. Whoever decided to add that I hope they're having an amazing day.

Also, is that a Ruri Hana Miss Em?? Gosh I love this game.

And I'm not done gushing about the designs yet cause LOOK AT HIM!!! LOOK!!!! He's so cute!!!!🧡🧡🧡

The art for the cards is really pretty and I need more Levi cards so badly asap

Also, there's a shit ton of extra content, wow. I'm not sure how I feel about the whole 3D models yet (mostly cause my phone only gives me bad renditions of them) but the extra content is slice of life funny bits. I like that they're voice acted, they're good.

Hey so y'know how you can click on the characters and get voice messages in the home screen and how you interact with them in the surprise guest screen? In neither of those I can click on Levi's tail and I consider that a crime against all Levi stans.

OKAY SO when this game was announced and as time went on and we got little pieces of the plot, not gonna lie I was worried. When it comes to time and time travel this franchise has a, well, a record. I'm still worried how it's gonna develop but for now I really like the things they're showing in the main story regarding the characters and the plot. Just, y'know, fingers crossed it doesn't become a mess.

Honestly the timeline is a mess already as it is. We met Luke and he has apparently just started learning how to bake, but in the first game he says he's been doing it for about 300 years, so it's been only 300 years between the end of the Celestial War and the beginning of the first game? Shouldn't the time be at least a few thousand years?? I'm solving this by doing a headcanon that time moves differently in different worlds cause otherwise the lack of coherence bothers me too much.

I'm so intrigued about Nightbringer himself. You think the prologue is giving us a red herring about who he is? Will it be a new character? An old one? Us from the future? They did a good job in implementing the mystery and I can't wait.

I was rereading this chat we have with them at the beginning of the game and something caught my eye:

Do you think maybe we'll start jumping between time as the story continues? So that we'll be at and see different time periods with different characters?? 🤔

This guy has an omurice for an icon when we all know he can't cook to save his life and I find that so ironic xD I like how much he's getting involved in the story so far too

I still don't know who gave them the right to go THIS HARD on a rhythm otome game. I love this thing what the hell. I wish I went this hard with my own projects.

So I haven't finished the normal lessons yet and I barely started the hard right? I've been busy grinding on both games since I started OMSWD in like Feb 2023 and currently sit in lesson 30 ish normal and like haven't reach level 20 hard. And then I started the new game because I had enough knowledge to feel comfortable doing so not to mention spoilers that got me into actually downloading the original after denying to for two years.

But while doing some grinding on nightbringer, I got a text from Levi.. And like I haven't seen anyone talk about how this mf said Zoinks.

I'm sorry. What?

This man was like ah yes lemme add a Scooby-Doo ref .

I'm only saying this because no one actually says that.

Kinda normie of you Levi.

Does the show even exist in the past or relatively at all?? Because the lore is already kinda fck rn with our off brand snapchat hybrid tiktok app that is popular in the past and yet not in our present. It confuses me but not to the extent of where I actually care much.

I think my favorite think is the off brand Mauraders Map they included. You're telling me they didn't see how fcked up the HP franchise was and took the opportunity to make us a gen neutral as possible in game, even giving us a sheep as our MC representative mascot instead of plain Jane Doe and then in the second game give a big fck u to HP? Honestly it's just funny to me.

Also in the lessons I've only had one Perfect combo and I seethe with rage when I "accidentally" miss one and don't get my combo finish. Sometimes I wonder how competitive I am but then again I have this thing with certain games that if I don't get it perfect I will spend time redoing everything till I get it. The Ruri Chan battles reminds me of guitar hero and the piano tiles game. Mostly guitar hero tho because of the hard and extreme battles are hell incarcerated and gives me the rage I had when doing hard on GH.

Thoughts on Obey Me! Nightbringer

These are the thoughts that I've compiled since it has come out. So some things may be out of date (lol). Part 1 of?

Spoilers for the MC part. Acute spoilers for game aspects

THE GAME ITSELF/MC

I like the mechs. Glitchy, but nice.

The design is modern and nice, though feels weird, (‘cause, you know, Diavolo knows how many years ago right after the Celestial War.)

I would really love it if they added an archive of sorts, for the previous seasons/lessons/events. (doubtful, tho).

I love rhythm games, apparently??? I’ve only really played Twisted Wonderland thus far, and IYKYK.

Sad that stats and item at least don’t transfer

150 FOR PITY PULLS?!?!?!?!?!? WHY?!!?!?!?!?

The same event/pop quizzes will be on both… I will only be playing them on NB.

Obey Me! Nightbringer "Trick or Treat!" Pop Quiz

!SPOILER WARNING!

My thoughts on the Halloween 2023 event!

It was my first year doing a HDD time pop quiz and it did not disappoint! I’m not sure if they have the same Halloween costumes every year (that would not surprise me), but Beel and Bel’s really stood out to me! They are so cute yet Beel’s also feels really sexy! The other character outfits weren't bad, but just didn’t interest me as much. MC’s costume was not specified I don’t think? Which is always appreciated.

Lucifer: Vampire

Mammon: Mummy

Levi: Bakeneko (Devinyan from Mononoke Land)

Satan: Skeleton

Asmo: Witch

Beel + Bel: Werewolves

Diavolo: Frankenstein

Barbatos: Zombie

Solomon: ghost??

Luke: Pumpkin

(options go with Beel or Bel)

Even tho Beel was really pulling me in I felt like I had to follow Bel because he was the one that technically asked.

Learning about Devildom (and surrounding domains) flora, fauna and food is one of my favorite parts of the game because they are so wild. Barbatos + Diavolo teaching you about the one-eyed chameleon filled that need. And it becomes our little shoulder friend TwT

Barbatos: “It changes its colouring to blend in with its surroundings, leaving only its eyeball visible. As a result, people do tend to mistake it for a wandering oculus.”

I really loved the Halloween Cafe theme! It's something I would attend if it was in my area and I love making specialty foods/drinks for myself so doing it with the OM family was awesome! You see a lot of themed cafes for school festivals in anime + manga.

Later on when we are making recruitment posters:

MC: “Wow Barbatos. That…is a very realistic drawing.”

Barbatos: “While it may frighten some viewers…”

I could hear the warning that plays after tv commercials in my head xD Also the poster drawings made me think of me and my sister prepping halloween treat bags, drawing little creatures on them. Very comfy vibes :3 A troublesome kitty gets involved leaving lil footprints of paint everywhere! So cute!

Its cute monsters showed up for the interviews, perfect Halloween interaction, but… no monster sprites :( So sad. Please Solmare make npc sprites! Or at least some new/special backgrounds. The sprites don’t need to be detailed, but it would have made the scenes with monsters so much better!

The monsters included were; mummy, skeleton, zombie and pumpkin spirit.

Does a pumpkin spirit just look like a see through pumpkin? Or like a genshin Seelie?

I did like there was a few interactions with the monsters; Mammon becoming friends with the mummy. The skeleton trying to help lift heavy things, but falls apart. The spirit drawing a face on the pie in secret while we were baking (Yay to Asmo joining us in the kitchen!).

And then there's Barbatos hilarious and painfully relatable situation of being pursued by the zombie. Poor guy is continuously asked out (then proposed to) by a co-worker he has no interest in but can’t fire them because they are a good worker. A horrible situation to be in, but great plot wise. Barbatos always ends up in strange situations like that.

Thirteen

Has selective hearing and only hears the trick part of trick or treat, luckily she is stopped before ruining cafes xD

Of course needs to get his nose in everything.

Raphael

Still don’t know how he can eat Solomon’s cooking without dying.

Micheal gives me helicopter parent vibes ‘I must make sure my son is looking proper on this occasion!’ or ‘I really hope he looks horrible, he can’t look better than me.’ But fr he must really miss his brothers TwT

When the monsters started to surround everyone and wanted to force us to be friends I was like “Noooo we can be friends normally! Friends don’t hold other friends hostage!” Then after they lost the games we had to do all the work at the cafes T_T. They even gave us trick candy later…

Very glad Beel offered to help Luke in the pumpkin rolling. Always nice to see Beel being assertive :3

But seriously who is naming these??

(Options pick Diavolo or Satan to play the game)

While Diavolo has been in the Devildom longer then Satan and have more hands on experience I feel Satan has done more in depth research so would know the bone structures better. And I was correct!

Lucifer

Lucifer: “It would be nice to do something Halloween-esque with you, no matter how brief.”

MC: “Treat for you!”

Lucifer: “...These look handmade, too. I promise to savor them.”

Asmo: “A treat obviously! You get to eat me! <3”

MC: “Could I have a kiss, then?”

I’m always fully down to give Asmo little cheek kisses :3

Levi: “Halloween’s really just another holiday for normies…”

MC: “Trick or treat!”

Levi: “Are you going to give me a demonstration? Okay, um… I’ll go with trick I guess.”

MC: *lil mwah nervously*

Poor boy was having a hard time interacting with customers, but apparently he was feeling some kind of way! What was that?! Also this might have been our first nightbringer kiss :0 i’m sure it looked awkward as hell. (Lil sidebar - my MC has been hesitant to be intimate with Levi knowing he doesn't know their true feelings for him.)

Laughing so hard at Satan excitedly eating a cat shaped treat and now having to meow after every sentence xD

MC: “Mind if I try trick or treating with you, too?”

Satan: “...Honestly, I think I’ve had my fill of treats, meow. Especially since that last batch went so well for me, meow.”

MC: *cheek kiss*

Very simple interaction, but very sweet.

Beel

You did so well Beel! I’ll gladly except them and we can share!

Diavolo

MC: “Trick or treat, Diavolo!”

Diavolo: “In that case, allow me to give you some sweets. It’s some chocolate that i’ve gotten somewhat addicted to lately. I hope that you’ll enjoy it, too.”

MC basically says this last part to Diavolo in the fic I posted for his birthday xD

Really appreciate that they acknowledged Diavolo’s birthday. More flashbacks to my fic reading this scene.

We also got to see Little D No.2 in this story! I felt so bad for him tho! Was so worried Thirteen would make him miss the cafe, so glad he didn’t! That lil guy deserves so much love <3 he works so hard!

Cards

All the cards were beautiful! Beel and Bel UR cards were so well done! I only got “Halloween Presents SSR” but it's the first time I've got any event card so I'm super happy about it!

Overall very pleased. This story was pretty well put together! Hope to see this quality at least for pop quizzes going forward <3

(I guess we will find out tomorrow with the new event coming out O.o)

I think im leaning towards Nightbringer being a Solomon Thirteen combo. Barbados is a red herring.

The chapter 10 side story heavily implies Nightbringer isn't a demon, and if they made Solomon who he is it could only be Micheal or her with Barbados off the table. Since Micheal literally made him Solomon the wise with the ring of Wisdom, and his hideout in Thirteens home has been the birth of all books for who knows how many centuries.

Micheal has no present motivation though, and Thirteen is the only one with no responsibility holding her back. Tho if it is her I very much doubt she would've been able to get away with it without Barbados’s knowing, but since he didnt send MC back he can't bring them forward.

I kinda wonder if it might be Thirteen's attempt to do Mc a solid? She has made it clear her choices are based purely on personal feelings, and survival. So I wonder if its her weird way of making it easier for Mc to marry a brother, since the only reason they were denined was timing. It's mad, but she was never exactly the most thorough planner. If this is the case I bet their trying to beat her ass back in the present. Also a side but I wouldn't be surprised if Thirteen had something to do with Solomons immortality- even if accidently (giving him a book she in hindsight shouldn't have, allowing to much trust n allowing him to mess with his life candle etc) Which would also make sense on how Solomon so quickly figured out what happened and charged. He knows Thirteen, their practically siblings (to me) so he would've 100% drawn conclusions faster than anyone n on a whim just leap without looking cuz A. He knows she'd never send anyone into harms way for real. Killing isnt her job just collecting, and B. Timing- Barbados at least was on his heels, so he charged in before anyone could stop him both because Mc has to have a protector n because why tf would he pass up a shot to play couple/hero? Hes competing with 10 other ppl he needs an edge n he took the first opportunity presented.

It might be interesting to consider Thirteen doing it to give Solomon an edge on purpose as well. If Mc is tied to the devildom via marriage fundamentally Mc could no longer be bipartisan n theres a strong chance they might try to convince immortality onto them- which could present a big issue if something were to happen. Which explains why he pushed them promising to side with him so aggressively out of no where. If his apprentice were to turn on him in the event of another war there is no win for him. N i think he'd do anything to prevent that outcome before it even happens. (Which is wrong of him, but hes been sole defender so long I wouldn't be surprised if he's having a hard time trusting things will remain peaceful after his apprentice dies in 60 years. A blip for all but a mortal Mc where he will then be alone again[at least in his head. He was genuinely surprised to hear Luke n Simon considered him family.])

Overall: Sabaa Tahir manages to avoid the second book curse with A Torch Against the Night, she picks up where she left off in An Ember in the Ashes (our review). Laia and Elias have escaped Blackcliff, Helene and the rest of the Masks are after them, and Darrin has yet to be saved. Everything that could go wrong DOES go wrong, but then at the same time, we get some wholesome moments in this book and overall we LOVED IT!!!

The Good:

→ Laia

Kae: Laia. Our sweet little angel. She can never do anything wrong ever in life. We love her and we stan. She has broken Elias out of Blackcliff and now they’re on the run! It’s a hot ass mess. She and Elias escape through some catacombs or whatever, and they end up at an old Veturius warehouse where Keris, Elias’ evil ass mother is waiting for them. They battle it out! CLASH SLASH SLASH! Swords and scims are SWANGIN. They knock Keris out, tie her up, and get away. But… Keris done got a little slice in and cut Elias. Now he’s sick, seizing, and passed TF OUT. So while he and Laia are on this journey, taking care of him the whole way through. Things are getting worse and Elias is getting WORSE. So she takes a risk and goes to a sketchy town to find meds for him. The destination to find safety and also rescue her brother, Darrin is going to take a long longer than she anticipated.

Geena: Kae got the start of the book really well, and like she mentioned we find out the Keris managed to cut Elias with a throwing star (lmao I THINK) which was poisoned. But Elias doesn't let Laia know that he’s been poisoned by a chemical that has no cure and that he’ll just end up slowly and painfully dying 😭 LAIA THO? She thinks of everything she can to help him, like going into a shady town full of mercenaries and killers to find him an antidote that she thinks might work. Does that backfire? Yes. But did she try her best? HELL YES. Laia makes a lot of mistakes in this book, but rather than wallowing in some sort of self-pity she takes shit into her own hands and learns from her screw-ups and I really loved how Sabaa handled her. A lot of people drag Laia down and compare her to Helene, and I think I mentioned this in our last review too that those comparisons aren’t right because:

Helene is a trained soldier, and she got white feminists antics so please…

Laia literally has had no training but she (with Elias) manage to outsmart Helene and other Masks so like…..

Anyways, I love Laia and I’ll fight ANYONE who talks shit about her. Scratch that, Elias will manifest and beat the shit out of anyone that talks shit about Laia. Like even when she was hanging out with Keenan, Elias was like ‘If it weren’t for my love for Laia I would have murdered your ass’ just because he suspected Keenan of being a snake (and he was right…). But yea, in Book 2 Laia takes command of what happens and starts formulating her own plans along with help from her companions, and she doesn’t let any backfired plans stop her (even when Izzy died 😩). When Elias is captured and imprisoned she plans to break out both him and her brother, and through quick thinking, she and Elias are able to devise a plan which obviously goes to shit but still ends up working out... So Laia haters… how my ass taste?

→ Ilyaas and the Tribes

Kae: Geena summed up Laia perfectly! So now we’re going to talk about Ilyaas and the tribes. Elias, as we all know, was abandoned by his mother when he was a baby. She left him in the desert for the tribes people to find instead of just killing him, which she deeply regrets. SO!! Elias is not his birth name. His birth name is Ilyaas, which is the name given to him by the tribes people. They are who Elias considers to be his real family. He has siblings, a mother (Mamie Rila), friends, and more, who he grew up with before he was taken to go to Black Cliff. Here is where Ilyaas feels the most comfortable with himself and his surroundings. He feels his safest when he is with the tribes. He had kept in contact with them his whole life and continued to do so even after being on the run which is why they ended up back with the tribes. They took him in and consider him family and when they met Laia, they instantly loved her. Especially Mamie Rila, who thought she had “GOOD BIRTHING HIPS” LMAOOO SHE WILD FOR THAT ONE. Anyway, when Elias and Laia show up as fugitives, they know they have to hide them. So Mamie Rila and family keep them hidden. When the Martial’s come riding the camp and looking for them, they figure out a distraction. Mamie Rila calls a big meeting during a special ceremony in which she gives a speech. During the speech, she riles everyone up and shit talks to Martials and what they did to Elias and how they are ruining society. This gives the tribal people the motivation to cause a big enough riot for Elias and Laia to book it! Elias runs into Helene during their escape and they meet for the first time in weeks, possibly months. Helene is stunned, but Elias tells her he is sorry and he misses her. After a good fight, Elias gets the best of Helene. She ends up letting them get away.

Geena: Kae really hit all the points! I really liked how Sabaa mentioned that Elias’ (Martial) grandpa changed his name from the given Ilyaas and anglicized it for Martial society (shoutout to Colonialism ha ha). But Ilyaas and his connection with his family is one of the things that sets him apart from other YA protagonists I’ve noticed, he’s genuinely a good person and it’s because he was raised in such a loving and caring environment and my hort 🥺 In this book he stays on the same trend of always getting into shit bc he’s a good guy, he’s vowed to help Laia break out Darrin but then shit goes down… The poison killing him sends him to the Waiting Place (essentially a purgatory) where he meets the Soul Catcher (Shaeva) who helps him come to terms with the fact he’s dying. Through Ilyaas we also learn about what lead to the creation of the Nightbringer (how the Shaeva helped some Scholars essentially destroy a thriving Jinn community r.i.p.). This is spread throughout the book and really enhances Sabaa’s worldbuilding and we loved it! Also, we can’t forget the rawest lines throughout the whole series which was said in this book:

“You are my temple. You are my priest. You are my prayer. You are my release.”

LIKE HELLO?????????????????????????????????????? When Elias realized he only had a month left to live and that he’d move faster without the tribal folk, he leaves Laia and whispers that to her while she’s asleep and SHE DOESN’T EVEN HEAR IT BRO?? Anyways, Elias leaves to bust Darrin out himself but things happen and he ends up imprisoned, but still manages to get to Darrin and finds out that KEENAN’S BITCHASS ISN’T WHO HE SAYS HE IS.

Kae: Also when Elias breaks into the prison he’s almost immediately caught by the Warden who experiments on the prisoners. These prisoners are mostly the scholars. So the Warden recognizes Elias from when he has to patrol the prison when he was younger. When the Warden recognizes Elias, he puts him in prison and it begins to torture him. But Elias ain’t no bitch so he handles that shit like a MAN!!! Whenever the Warden is done with Elias he sends in a little Scholar boy to clean him up. The boy continues to clean Elias up and be nice to him and Elias is like “I love this child as if he were my own. I will kill ANYONE who does him HARM and there will be MURDER.” And so like, Elias is a softie and once again, genuinely a good person that is out in bad situations.

Geena: Elias engaged dad mode in the middle of a torture chamber, imagine what’ll happen if he and Laia ever have children….

Kae: Need me a man like Elias ngl asdfghjkl. BUT LIKE. HE’S LIKE “my new son… what is your name?” And the little boy is like “Puhpa.. I have no name*insert sad eyes here*” So Elias names him Tas. Tas helps him break out of prison with Darrin. But Elias dies as they’re escaping and he goes to the Waiting Place and he makes a deal with Shaeva to take her place so she can move on to the next life, then BOOM. He’s alive again and wakes back up in the prison.

Tas: Yo wtf wake yo big ass up. I, a six year old, have been carrying you.

Elias: LMAOOO my bad I was dead. Let’s roll.

And so they escape with Darrin and Laia and the rest of the Scholars. And Kauf burns down.

The Bad:

→ Keris

Geena: Keris may not be a good person or a good mother but at least…………………………… I was trying to think of something good to say about her but this bitch really is all trash. Like she finds some sort of sick joy in killing her own son. Like, why let him live after you gave birth to him only to turn around and torture him. Anyways, we find out some interesting tidbits about how she’s in cahoots with the Nightbringer, who seems to be controlling everything she does. And we also find out that she’s planning a coup against Markus, who is the new and shitty emperor, but because the support behind him is weak Keris is like ‘This will be no biggie’. She finds some sort of sick joy in killing scholars, she wakes up and is like “I eat genocide for breakfast,” and I’m like *monkey side eye* bc who in the fuck... Like I don’t know what she was fed growing up but the concentration of hate and bitterness in this woman is too much… we also find out she had Helene’s torturer, Avitas Harper, spying on Helene throughout the whole book. Keris doesn’t just have eyes in the back of her head, she got eyes on every living surface.

→ Harper

Kae: Harper! I didn’t like him when he was first introduced. I didn’t like the fact that he was beating the shit out of Helene even though I wasn’t exactly a fan of her either but I understood that she had to do what she had to do so she wasn’t a number one on my enemy list just yet. But I hated having to read Harper whoop her ass. I mean, Harper didn’t LIKE doing it. But ya kno… Keris made him do it. Harper started off as a spy for Keris. He was assigned to basically be Helene’s second, so he was to aid her in whatever mission she was sent on , while also reporting everything she did back to Keris. LITTLE DID WE KNOW THO!!! THAT OUR BOY AVITAS HARPER DIDNT FUCK WITH KERIS. He had his own personal motives that we don’t discover in this book. So after awhile he was like “....nah I’m done with that.” So he becomes loyal to Helene. He shows mild displays of not wanting to kill anyone that doesn’t need to be killed (the tribes after they helped Elias escape). He also goes out of his way to make sure Helene eats and gets sleep and has fresh clothes. I think little things like that is how he tries to show his loyalty. He also knows that Helene has a soft spot for Elias and that she doesn’t really want to hurt him. We learned that he has a soft heart and is a pretty cool dude. He really just wants to help Helene in any way that he can. He worries for her.

Geena: Harper has always been a shady character for me, like I didn’t expect Sabaa to turn Helene’s torturer into her love interest… WHEN I TELL U I SCREAMED at all their moments I was LIKE WAT IS THIS but I sat back because I was like imma trust Sabaa. But it was interesting to read Harper be like “Yea, I’m a snake and?” and Helene just accepting it like “This is my life I guess”. But Harper wanting to emulate Elias and being like “Maybe I too will attempt to be a good human being now”... a very interesting development… Also, Im curious to see how Harper (and by extension, Helene’s) stories end… will Sabaa give the soldiers of the state a happy ending… DO they deserve a happy ending 🤔 Will they make up for their war crimes in the series finale? Kae: ALSO THO. WHEN HELENE TELLS HARPER HE’S A SNAKE, HARPER IS LIKE “Yeah and Snakes survive soooo…”

→ Markus

Kae: So now we have skankass Markus. Markus used to have a twin brother named Zacharias. Markus killed Zacharias in the first book during the trials and now his twin brother haunts him and whispers in his ear. People claim that Markus talks to himself when it’s really him trying to get his brother out of his head. After the trials, Markus became Emperor. He is a tyrant and is killing whoever gets in his way. Markus is doing everything in his power to stay relevant because he is a very unliked by literally everyone in this society. He is a Plebeian and that is one of the lower ranking caste in this world. The Martials don’t like that someone of a lower rank is in charge of all of them so they want him off of the throne. He also has a lust/hate thing for Helene and tries to belittle and make her uncomfortable as much as possible. He also absolutely hates Elias and has ordered Helene to kill him. Markus ALSO arranged to marry Helene’s sister, Hannah. Hannah is kind of a bitch so she’s down with the shits to get back at Helene. Why she hates Helene? I seriously don’t know. In the end, Markus is like “So you didn’t kill Elias? *evil laughter* Well, since I can’t kill YOU, Helene, I’ll kill your family” so he slices the neck of Helene‘s parents and his fiancé, Hannah. He leaves Livia (Livvy) alive and married her instead. Ngl, that part made me so sad I got tears in my eyes. That was so fucked up dude. That’s when I KNEW Sabaa didn’t fuck around. I’m convinced she wants no survivors in the end lmaopleasedontdothatSabaa.

Geena: Oh yea like Markus is nasty as Kae outlined, he could’ve been Keris. But unlike Keris, Markus is a dispshit with no braincells (bc they died with his brother). He’s a disgusting human being who assaulted Laia back in book one and has been implied to have done that to other scholar slaves 🤢 AND LIKE …….. HELENE KNEW THIS……. AND SHE KNEW HER SISTER WAS TOO GOOD FOR HIM…. So, imagine her horror when her favourite sister is forced to marry him….. I guess he was “smart” for marrying her favourite sister and realizing that was the only way to control Helene to get her to do what he wanted. bUt das it.

The Ugly:

→ Keenan’s Fugly Ass. Bitchass. Manipulating ass.

Geena: Do you know…. Do you know how much denial I was in??? All through book 1 and majority of book 2, I was like FUCK KEENAN but seeing how Laia was into him I was like *angry pingu meme* LIke FINE FINE, I’ll like him because Laia likes him and I just want him to be happy. SO, I ACCEPTED THAT KEENAN AND LAIA WAS THE IT COUPLE… And like did I skim over the part where they got nasty? Kinda. But i was like okay fine, Laia loves him and he’s helping her. But then the big reveal…. THIS MANS WAS PLAYING HER THE WHOLE TIME??? HE WAS NEVER KEENAN, THE SCHOLAR REBEL, THIS HOE WAS THE NIGHTBRINGER THE WHOLE TIME??????? He’d played Laia into developing feelings for him, JUST SO that he could take the armlet that he mother had given her. Which, we find out, is an important part of some weapon that the Nightbringer needs to bring about the apocalypse or some shit. And, he can only take the weapon if it’s given out of love. This implies he was in love with Laia too, but I’d fight that bitch like hOW DARE YOU????

Kae: You skipped the nasty scene!? LMAOOO I WAS SHOOK BUT ALSO MAD BUT ALSO LIKE OKAY WHATEVER. I WAS A HARDCORE LAIA X ELIAS SHIPPER FROM THE START! But like, same. I was like “If Laia is happy with Keenan, then I’ll be happy too.” But maaaaann…

Geena: I WANTED TO GIVE KEENAN BENEFIT OF THE DOUBT OKAY, AND LIKE SABAA really subverted my expectations because usually in YA only the true love interests end up getting nasty so I was like… I guess this is it! But she was like “SIKE!!! YOU THOUGHT!!!” Anyways, I still don’t think this series should be YA but whatever...

Kae: GORL I WAS SEETHING WITH HATRED!!!!!!! AT THAT REVEAL!! I WAS SO FUCKING MAD. I COULDN'T BELIEVE IT!! I LITERALLY HATE HIM. Def shouldn’t be YA. But, here we areeee!

Kae: I just wanted to say that I hate Keenan/ The Nightbringer with a BURNING PASSION. I hate when guys trick women into trusting them so that they can sleep with them and get what they want. That pisses me off to the highest degree I think it is a scumbag move and he is just a dirty little fucker and I can’t stand him. There is nothing that can represent all of the hatred that I have for Keenan. I absolutely loathe him/The Nightbringer. I hope he suffers.

Geena: Fuck dude, that’s so valid.

Conclusion

Kae: In conclusion, the Nightbringer is a bitch and I HATE HIM.

Geena: SAME! We hate the Nightbringer as much as we love Laia and Elias so there’s that. Sabaa really shows out with the characters she’s crafted from An Ember in the Ashes, takes a baseball bat, and starts beating the shit out of our emotions and her characters at the same time. ANYWAYS, please read this series!

ELLA'S TOP THREE TUESDAY: FAVORITE YA VILLAINS

Personally, it would not be a good book if it didn’t have an evil to the rotten core villain. I love reading about villains and how they shape their ambitious stride in every story I read. Sometimes, they can be more interesting than the main characters, and that’s saying a lot. Today’s top three contains perhaps one of the evilest, most vile villains I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading.

I wrote a top three villains post long before my relaunch, so you can check out a recap of that here. This time, though, I’ll be going from the third up to the first for extra emphasis on being listed. So without further ado, here are the villains I just simply love to hate!

𝓣𝓸𝓹 𝓣𝓱𝓻𝓮𝓮 Amarantha from the A Court of Thorns and Roses series

“Shatter him, Rhysand.” She flicked a hand at the High Lord of the Summer Court. “You may do what you want with the body afterward.”

Listen, this girl is loooong dead and appeared in, like, ONE book (as far as I know since I’m only at ACOMAF, no spoilers pls ahhh!). I’m pretty sure she’s extra dead but we’ll see. Her evilness level, though, is beyond anything I could have every imagined.

Try imagining this Fae woman bringing all seven ruling High Fae Lords from different courts of Prythian to their knees. They were under her control, and wouldn’t hesitate to kill or torture one or one of their citizens just to prove how powerful she is. Not to mention that she put a crazy 50 years curse on the High Lord of the Spring Court and made the most powerful High Lord in Prythian, the High Lord of the Night Court, her personal whore. Also heartless enough to put our main girl, Feyre, go through the most traumatic and grueling task no human should ever have the misfortune of going through. She’s definitely one of the worst, but I admire how a powerful woman like her--and considering how the courts never have a High Fae Lady--was able to bring people to their knees and manipulate them to her will.

Scary as hell, and I love her for it.

Evilness Level: Solid 9/10 (would kill to have her ambitious stride tho) How Evil: Petty enough to kill the human man that killed her sister and take his eye and a piece of his finger bone as her personal accessories. She’s wild.

𝓣𝓸𝓹 𝓣𝔀𝓸 Keris Veturia (The Commandant) from the Ember Quartet

I’m trying to refrain from profanity when it comes to writing blog posts. But forgive my french when I say THIS BITCH. Amarantha is one thing, but I personally believe Keris Veturia aka the Commandant is another level of evil. Marcus Farrar, another evil character in the series, makes him look like a softie compared to what Keris did for the majority of this series.

If there’s such a thing as Worst Mother of the Year, it’s gotta be given to Keris. After Elias escaped from Blackcliff, she was hellbent on having her own son get killed. Heck, she didn’t even hesitate to poison him when they came face to face right after. Though it’s not to say she was particularly heartless at first. She had a rough past. But like what Jake Peralta said on B99: “Cool motive, still murder.” And she has straight up murdered people. She had killed so many with her time as a Martial, and likely even more as The Commandant of Blackcliff. Honestly, this woman has no chill.

And the way she’s come around to being friendos with the Nightbringer (which is, like Marcus, almost nothing compared to what evil Keris can do) says just as much about her thirst for power and so much more.

10 out of 10 would not wanna be friends with her.

𝓣𝓸𝓹 𝓞𝓷𝓮 The Darkling from the Grisha Verse

The Darkling slumped back in his chair. “Fine,” he said with a weary shrug. “Make me your villain.”

There are villains that commit mass genocide for petty reasons, some who do it just because they want to, and there are some... that does it for the greater good. The latter part is probably the worst kind of villain and easy to hate. But Leigh Bardugo’s The Darkling is almost kind of impossible to hate. In fact, he’s my favorite villain of all. Not because I’m excusing his terrible ways of handling things for the greater good, but because he has some grey lines that makes me just want to hug him and keep him away from the cruelty of the world (even if he is the cruelty).

He’s so thoroughly convinced that his way is the best way which really does suck. But the way Leigh Bardugo wrote him made people almost sympathize bits of his life. I’m pretty sure majority of the fandom even ships The Darkling with Alina, the main character, just because they have so much better chemistry than Alina and Mal would ever have. He’s just such a complex character all bundled up into this dark Grisha who wants to have things for “the better”. He’s the actual worst, but I still love him anyway.
