I often see people over in the clock app painting NHS as outdoing JGY in his scheming and tbh I get where they're coming from but I think that's just dubious at best because JGY and NHS are very different characters. Bear with me.

I don't think either classify as schemers per se— NHS's plan could have been derailed by so many things that had a very fair chance of happening and that's not scheming imo. At least not decent scheming. NHS is a smart resentful guy with means and patience who happened to get lucky.

JGY on the other hand, unless I'm forgetting something, we never see him actually playing the long game, do we? Save for sunshot. He takes measures to protect himself against getting his crimes discovered but that's basic self preservation rather than long term thinking.

JGY works with his current circumstances because he has too or he'll die, while NHS has the means, the safety, and the time to play the long game.

NHS has the luck that nothing on his plans derailed, while JGY does not, and that kind of highlights their respective social positions, JGY as a hard working man who gets the short end of the stick every time and NHS as headshaker who gets to do whatever he feels like doing because he's gentry. Also NHS being given more grace than JGY

TLDR NHS and JGY are very complex and very different in the ways they operate (noth of which reflect their lives and experiences) and reducing All That to "schemer 2 outdos schemer 1" is both reductive and a disservice to both their characters

This ask filled me with an unfathomable amount of excitement, but it also made me laugh really, really hard, because while I would never say it's wrong to call omniscient reader's viewpoint an "asian BL novel," it's kind of like... Hm. Hindu trying to think of a sufficiently funny joke about the bible here and failing. Basically: yeah, that's in there, but holy shit are you both underselling and underestimating it by saying that :)

I've answered questions about orv tons of times (see my best attempt here), but I am quite literally always happy to do so again!! I'll start with this: Since we're both tma fans, I think you are going to LOVE the apocalypse orv presents, especially its tragic themes on voyeurism and privacy and silent bystanders/watchers, self-sacrifice and suicide, and women who kill. You are also going to love kim dokja for his brand of sopping-wet pathetic bisexuality, but that was a given.

Orv is technically brilliant-- it renders its themes unto you like an obsidian knife-- but it's also INCREDIBLY funny, and although it has a convoluted timeline and a complex plot, it WILL hold your hand as you go through it. Its characters are so three-dimensional they literally jump off the page (how's that for a meta joke), and they WILL live in your brain forever after reading the novel. They're inescapable. And on that subject: YES, ORV WILL MAKE YOU CRY. It made me cry while I was reading it for the first time, multiple times, and it still makes me cry! Almost weekly! And I do not cry at things!!! This book fucks you up so so bad and you will kiss its feet and thank it for the privilege!!!

I really hope that makes sense, I have so much I want to and could say and absolutely no way to express it coherently, I just hope this is sufficient to keep you interested!! Thanks so much for the ask, I hope you're doing great!!!! 💜💜💜

HM. YKNOW, with as many times as I've personally romanticized the story of Eden (in an ex-christian, probably heretical/blasphemous way) myself, you'd think I'd've realized sooner.

Her name is EDEN.

His is LUCIEN.

I'VE DEDICATED SO MUCH OF MY BRAIN SPACE TO THINKING, LIKE, "wow it was honestly based af for Lucifer to go and bring knowledge to the humans stuck in Eden, I'd smooch the fallen angel fr fr" AND YET. IT TOOK ME UNTIL THE LATEST CHAPTER TO REALIZE THE NARRATIVE PARALLELS FJJFJFND

god I do love the story so far tho 🥺 gnaws on my phone... we love the allegory. We love the themes (even if we're a little slow on the uptake lmao).

No one ever believes me when I say this but this was not 100% intentional lmao. 

Eden is an old oc, she's incredibly flawed and frequently has ill intent. She is selfish and values her own goals more than most other people’s well-being. I called her Eden not only to call to the faux sense of safety she inspires, but also bc more than anything it was important to me that she felt human. Not redeemable or misunderstood, mind you, but fundamentally human and flawed in ways that show aspects of her that are worthy of being understood (something that flawed female characters often do not get as much as male ones do)

For a long time her name was Eve actually, before her apprentice and Lucien were ever created, but it never felt quite right. I really like Eden bc it does give you that sort of sickly sweet sense while I think, also really rooting her in that story of base, fundamental humanity.

She is so incredibly flawed in the way that humans are wont to be. She thinks of herself first, she seeks power and control, and she does it in the name of her own base humanity. (just in the way that readers overwhelming sense of trust and empathy is in the name of hers)

All of that and the whole isolation thing and some other things that I can't mention bc they're spoilers are intentional. 

The Lucien thing fully wasn’t. When creating Lucien I had the reader character (she was not a reader character at the time lol, rip Valentine, ur still the same character but ur name was so cute) in mind and I wasn’t rlly thinking about the whole Eden situation lol, the fact that it lined up so well is either a happy accident or (more likely) my catholic upbringing doing a number on my subconscious lol. 

His name is so close to Lucifers bc I wanted it to feel like he was an archetypal demon, not some exception to the rule. I didn’t want readers to be able to dismiss that fact or distance him from it, it's my way of keeping that front and center.  

The connection between those two names is so serendipitous I frankly cannot believe it lol. Stories have a way of doing that, I’ve found. You form all the themes you can but try as you might, a story will form its own. You just have to adapt to it and make those themes the best they can be. 

So just know ur not alone in missing it for a little longer than you should lol, happens to the best of us my dear
