Your drown buck mission must have gotten in my head because I was just rewatching Buck Begins and there were several little things that stood out to me in the context of... if the drown buck theory were to come to pass, could make for nice parallels ,or just things that work nicely with what you've already laid out for that spec.

One was Buck being in a terrible headspace, but going into the factory fire and then disobeying orders to evacuate which got him in a life-threatening position. And "giving up" (which I know you've mentioned in your spec around him maybe not trying as hard to save himself)

They must have mentioned the ocean, specifically, at least three times in the postcard/flashback montage- from Buck: "I love being close to the ocean," "I miss the ocean," from Connor: "[LA] it's only an hour from the ocean, man."

The exchange with Saleh after Buck gave him his mask about "how will you breathe?" "I'm gonna hold it." "for how long?" "as long as I can."

I'm not sure I've ever heard or at least noticed 911 do this at any other point, but they played a heartbeat sound effect, only for about three beats, right as Buck is noticing him passing out/not breathing(?), just before the sprinklers come on.

And then there's just the whole music/rescue of it all: "so far from being free, from the past that's haunting me / the future I just can't touch" *ENTER EDDIE* (and team).

Idk, all that^^^, combined with your spec, and just generally where Buck's character stands vs where he needs to go, seems to line up nicely for a subtle, non-labeled, Buck Begins Again.

First of all, I need to say that every time someone says they are thinking about Buck drowning because of me I laugh like a cartoon villain lol so thank you for enabling my insanity.

ALSO YES YES YES. I know my general explanations of how I got to the drowning only brush on Buck begins, but like, the spec itself started going around in my head when I made this post back in September, because I thought making the set would make me stop thinking about Buck and water and the general breathing of it all, clearly it didn't work lol. The main thing for me is the way Buck has been trying to keep himself together since Buck Begins, and that I'm gonna hold my breath thing really stayed with me, because that's against protocol, but Buck doesn't believe his life is worth it, and in that moment he's really feeling that, and even Buck admits it, he almost gave up there. And Buck has been holding his breath. And sure, you could've moved on from that after the lightning since the thing that stops working are his lungs, BUT he's still pretending to be fine, he hasn't dealt with his death or any major feelings he might have about everything that happened to him. And since his trauma is linked by water and most of his near death experiences involve breathing, drowning him makes so much sense narratively. Even more considering the way he had some sort of revelation when he was in his coma, experiencing something like that again could shock him into action. Seriously, it's right there. It writes itself. And you can parallel SO MUCH stuff. Almost losing Bobby in the plane crash, Maddie lost in the snow, losing Chris on the tsunami, almost losing Eddie on the well, almost losing himself at that warehouse or even the lightning. It's right there.

Also yes, Eddie being the first on his line at the warehouse always makes me feral. Even more paired with the way Eddie was running up that ladder to get to his line in the lightning. Like hello?????? They need to drown him and make Eddie bring him back again since Eddie was the one doing cpr and shocking him when they got his pulse back. It all makes sense.

Now Bruce was not expecting to reincarnate upon his death. At least he thinks he died, he’s pretty sure he did. There wasn’t any other reason for him to be a well, literal baby. Around two he thinks, which fits well with the fact that it’s around that time that babies start forming memory recall, if he, well, remembered correctly. 

But while he knew about reincarnation thanks to Shayera and Carter, he’d never exactly given it much thought towards himself. Because seriously, what were the chances of such a thing as him being given another chance? 

So he was quite surprised at his situation, experimentally opening and closing pudgy hands that looked well, just a tiny bit off. He’d never been that pale before, he thinks, even back when he never went outside like, ever. 

He turned his gaze towards the mobile above him with a sort of idle curiosity- a mixture of bats (ha) and other trinkets he wasn’t familiar with. It also caused him to get his first good look at his parent, asleep on a rocking chair right next to the crib. 

Huh. They had the same pale skin he did, albeit in the light it looked like it was slightly tinted blue, and while their hair was white they didn’t exactly look old. They looked surprisingly well rested for raising a toddler too, unless they had a nanny or something similar… He rolled over, managing to very shakily push himself to his feet with the help of the crib. 

Why was standing so hard as a toddler? And why did he have his memories of everything except how he had died anyway? 

His head whipped up from where they were staring at his feet when he heard a snort, finding his parent awake and standing. Somehow silently enough that he hadn’t noticed- or he was that easily distracted by the unfamiliar giddiness bursting in his chest. 

“Morning little bat,” his parent easily picked him up and held him while he inwardly sighed at the nickname. Of course his bat motif would follow him into this life. A low rumbling almost caused him to jump, his body relaxing before he could fully register the sound. The… purring? 

Oh. 

He wasn’t human this time around.

ok so ben is an old fave and i have thoughts. this first new hc design isn’t that remarkable except for the fact that instead of trying to make ben look like a dark/‘corrupted’ link, i tried to draw him like a kid in a hand-stitched link costume.

i will be drawing/writing(?) ben as a kid btw, specifically a ghostly 12 year old kid whose hobbies include trying to stress his cohabitants into early retirement.

the ben fullbody on the left is a slightly more corporeal form that he uses when out in the open and interacting with people in person. while still ghostly (like. swipe at him and your hand will go straight through him kinda ghostly) it’s more solid and has more of his features that he possessed before his death. he floats!! that’s his main mode of transportation in the open. he floats.

the one on the right is one that you’d see onscreen! he’s quite literally ‘rendered’ differently giving his victims that patented dread associated with ben. uncanny valley yk

when scared or upset his pupils vanish leaving you with those empty dark scleras. this doesn’t happen often though!

Horror: Now, Skull is a cecaelia. But I think Horror would be a little different. A big frightening toothed whale - particularly, a Risso's dolphin. Risso's dolphins have a cool effect where any time they get an injury, their scars lose pigment and remain white forever. Horror is slowly turning whiter and whiter as time goes on.

Just like usual, he used to be normal sized, but his injury kickstarted a bizarre growth spurt and he's become far larger than he ever should've. He enjoys targeting boats - since he's so big he can easily sink small ships, his favourite 'game' is ramming vessels and seeing who survives after the ship rolls over. He eats anyone who drowns.

I can imagine him falling in love with you from the water, and rocking your boat purely to get your attention. If you ignore him he slams into the hull in frustration. He'd never sink your boat, of course... not unless you were really, REALLY ignoring him, and he lost his temper.

Dust: An oceanic whitetip shark. The beautiful dark colouring. The 'dusty' white edges of the fins and tail. A solitary, wandering creature that's probably responsible for many of the open-water shark attacks attributed to other species... IMO, it's absolutely perfect.

Before joining Nightmare, he travelled long distances in isolation, avoiding large vessels or groups but hunting down and killing anyone (or anything) he caught alone. He'll follow prey for weeks; he often waits for people on boats to go stir crazy before he attacks.

He's a distant admirer. He'll stalk from afar, but come closer at night, when it's hard to distinguish his dark shape against the moonlit sea. He thinks you'll be a very pretty siren.

Killer: @aka-indulgence suggested Killer is a bull shark and she's absolutely right. Killer is hyperactive and murderous, but incredibly loyal to those he cares about (even if he won't admit he cares). Bull sharks are fast, notoriously aggressive, yet surprisingly social.

Killer just enjoys... well, killing. He sometimes plays with his prey, but the games are never as forgiving as Horror's, or as patient as Dust's. He likes to bite the limbs off of his targets and watch them struggle to get away.

He's extremely friendly to you. Worryingly so. He lacks any subtlety, he'll come right up to your boat and put his arms over the edge when he wants your attention, flirting like you didn't just watch him murder another siren in cold blood. A swift strike with an oar is usually enough to ward him off - but unfortunately, it never seems to chase him away permanently.

Nightmare: He isn't any one species. He's much, much older. He was something else before his corruption... but times change, don't they? If you don't know what to call him, he certainly doesn't mind the ego stroke of being called a kraken.

Obviously it would be ridiculous of me to make Nightmare anything other than a cecaelia. He's large, scary, black as midnight sea, beautifully bioluminescent when he wants to be. He has attributes of lots of different deep-sea creatures; retractable hooks in his tentacles, a toxic bite, terrifying teeth, incredible vision. He's not the kind of thing you want to encounter underwater. Ever.

The other sirens would be very reluctant to let Nightmare know you exist. But when all three of his underlings are chasing the same prey... well. You'll catch his eye sooner or later.

i always feel bad when i see how the point of a lot of saiki's personality traits flew right over the heads of a lot of fans due to him being an unreliable narrator and a tsundere lol.. so a lot of things he says are immediately proved to be untrue and often just him putting up a front, but some people dont pick up on it..

like i see a lot of "haha saiki would never want to watch a romance movie" guys there is an entire chapter (170) dedicated to him being like "i much prefer mysteries to romance stories.." and then immediately becoming absolutely enamored with a romance story.. he was lying, guys, LMAO

less specific ones include:

"i hate children, they annoy me" *goes out of his way to help kids, comfort them, be kind to them, etc.*

"i only use my powers for self gain/my own convenience." "anyway my mama told me to never use my powers selfishly so i always use them to help people and i try my best not to use them for personal gain<3"

"those guys are so annoying, i would never hang out with them willingly." "yeah it took them about two sentences to convince me to go with them. their thoughts seemed like they really wanted me to go, so i did. i didnt want them to be upset. not that i care about them or anything."

(sorry i post about this kind of thing a lot, i just giggle a lot at how the entire manga is so easily misinterpreted and thousands of people have watched the show but didnt pick up on the main characters most defining character traits and frequent bits.. i think there needs to be a masterlist or something disproving all the extremely common misconceptions about saiki k lol)
