When we entered the hotel, the staff looked nervous. At least they recognized King Sinbad this time. Everyone knew about the battle at this point, and some of us had bandages, so there were no questions about our appearance.

Some mild pleasantries were shared while they secured their normal rooms. Ja'far added, "We'll be booking two more rooms as well. Both with 2 beds." "Make that three rooms. Two singles, and one double," Sinbad corrected confidently. At Ja'far's questioning look he explained, "Mori deserves a room to herself, and we can't ask Morgiana to-." "I don't mind sharing a room with Morgiana," I cut in. It might not be my money, but it still felt like a waste. "I insist." His smile was unwavering, and being an actual King, Sinbad got his way -not that either of us understood why I needed my own room. I decided not to look a gifted horse in the mouth. It was only going to be for one night anyway. A group of maids came to escort us to our rooms. Masrur was with the others and would be able to get them in when they arrived. Before we started walking, Ja'far turn to me. "Mori, you can give them your coat now so they can start cleaning it." He had a good idea -in theory. Part of me was surprised that was something the staff of a hotel would do, but I figured he wouldn't have suggested it if it wasn't possible. All the same, "I'd rather wait until I get to the room." "They will take good care of it and will return it to you." Ja'far must have caught my nerves and misinterpreted. Again words escaped me, so I used my actions. I grabbed the collar of my hoodie with one hand and the zipper tab with the other. I unzipped my hoodie to the bottom of my ribcage. Nothing slipped out, but I was undeniably not wearing anything underneath. "M-my lady!” Ja'far stammered. The maids were equally shocked. Sinbad had that sparkle in his eye. I regretted all my life decisions. As a demi-ace I often forget that some people experience sexual attraction just because. I zipped my hoodie back up quickly and repeated, "I'd rather wait until I get to the room."

There was the absolute shortest silence as Ja'far calculated what to do. He turned to one of the maids and requested a change of clothes to be delivered to my room. I guess having money really can buy any service you want. After the maid ran off, Ja'far apologized for not accepting my 'no' the first time, but still reprimanded me for not acting with better manners; he wasn't wrong. My shame lead me to the back of the pack as we started walking. For the first minute we walked in silence. Then the waves began to pick up. The injured dungeon capturer joined me. "You know, Mori," Sinbad still looked tired, but his smile shown like gold, "I had thought that metal was a small decoration. Is it a magic item? I've never seen clothes stitch back together like that." "What?" Zippers weren't invented until the 1800's, and Magi seems to start at our equivalent of early AD to maybe the 1500's depending on the region, plus fantasy stuff -all pre-industrial revolution. This world didn't have clocks let alone the manufacturing technology to make a zipper...yet. "Oh right." I slowed down a bit and put some space between us and Ja'far with the maids. The king matched my pace. I explained about the interlocking teeth, and demonstrated a few times (but no more than 3in/7.6cm) before fully zipping back up. I ended with, "This is nothing. You wouldn't believe the technology I had back home." Sinbad had a look about him; he was definitely plotting. "Would you tell me about your home sometime?" Again my knowledge was the most valuable thing about me. Ja'far glanced back at his King. He knew what his master was planning, and so did I.

"I don't know, King Sinbad." I played coy. "Why should I tell you something so valuable for free?" He played along, and let his shoulders drop in fake disappointment. "So you still think I'm a scoundrel? I'm even paying for all of your expenses." I hummed. "As I remember it, you agreed to supply those things in exchange for learning my name and my predictions to help save Balbadd." He didn't look like he had been caught in the act. This was definitely being used as an excuse to bring up going to Sindria again. And this time I wasn't nervous. I continued, "I did my part. Don't tell me you want to change the terms now that you won't be getting anything else out of it- like a scoundrel would," ending with a teasing tone. He directed all his charms at me. "What if I want to make a totally new agreement?" It should be illegal for this man to smile while making eye contact. "Have you given it more thought? Coming with me, and becoming the Prophet of Sindria?" Bingo "I have." I couldn't hide my smile if I tried, so I broke eye contact and watched those in front of us. "But I won't make my final decision until I hear what you plan on offering in return." The dust had barely started to settle in Balbadd, yet the two of us were already trying to make good on the seeds we planted when we first met. We both wanted the same thing -even our waves were flowing together. "Oh?" Sinbad was being as playfully as I was. I felt his hand hit at my elbow then slide down my arm until he got to my hand. His fingers curled around mine and he brought my knuckles up towards his lips. My eyes followed our connected hands; the sight lead me back to his eyes. As soon as our eyes met he stopped us walking -putting all of my attention on him- and said, "I promise as the King of Sindria, if you bless us with your prophecies, you will want for nothing." Did he really need to use seduction whenever he wanted something from a perceived woman? It was affective and heartless. Since I knew his character so well I decided to view it as proof that I held value to him. I know how to control my expression when I need to, but I can't seem to keep from blushing when Sinbad is involved. I answered him with a smile, "What more could I ask for, my King?”

Sinbad's offer was about what I had anticipated. I'd be supplied with housing and food, and if I asked for something he'd get it for me as long as it was within reason. It would be like being a child living off of their parents with no disposable income of their own -and I wanted to be able to live as an independent adult. When my 'prophecies' run out some time in the next two to five years, and I loose my worth to him, how will I survive? It was too early to push for more. I had time to figure it out. At least, I'd have two years of guaranteed security. Sinbad's smile went from controlled flirty to prideful as he got what he was after. "Now you really are MY Beautiful Prophet." His grip tightened on my hand and he got us walking again. He seemed lighter on his feet as he guided me hand in hand. My free left hand flew to my face. I couldn't tell which of us I was more embarrassed for. I needed something else to focus on if I was going to survive his flirting. "I don't know how you're standing right now with all of your injuries -let alone flirting so hard." He laughed at my reaction. "Are you worried about me?" "Of course." I kept my eyes trained on the people in front of us. His blood was still on my clothes. It hadn't even been a day since he got those injuries, and yet I could feel through the bandages that the hole made by the ice spear was gone. "You literally couldn't stand on your own earlier. You may have mastered multiple Djinns, but you're still human." "If you're that worried about me, perhaps you'd like to look after me yourself." He pulled my hand closer to him again and of course the rest of me came with it. My shoulder bumped against his arm. He easily countered my attempt to damped the mood. He was definitely too smooth. "Watching you sleep does not sound like a good use of my time." I made a point of denying his risque implications. The idea of personally making sure he rested wasn't bad -I was into domestic stuff like that- but he obviously meant it in the most flirty and perverted way possible. Sinbad gave one last attempt to seduce me. "Since you're finally on my side; I was hoping we could get to know each other better." He had to be in pain with those injuries -even with magical treatment. So even if I ever was interested in a one-night-stand it definitely wouldn't be with someone in his condition. I removed my hand from his and put more space back between us. "We'll have plenty of time to talk later." Sinbad still had a playful tone but it was softer. "Is this another prophecy?" At least he knew how to take a hint. I answered without looking at him, "Yes, actually." He accepted my 'no,' so I felt like rewarding his good behavior. "Starting tomorrow afternoon we'll have plenty of time to talk." Sinbad was smart; he'd remember what I told him the previous day. The Kou Fleet would be arriving by this time tomorrow. There would be plenty of time to talk on the ship to Sindria. I was grateful that King Sinbad let me end the conversation. He walked next to me silently the rest of the way. It was strangely comfortable to have him right there. The calmer waves were nice too. I was dropped off at my room first and asked if there was anything else I needed or wanted besides the change of clothes that was on it's way. Sinbad was already trying to prove that I would "want for nothing." It would be better for me to accept the offer as a show of faith. After thinking it over for a moment, I asked for writing supplies. --- My room had multiple windows that let in a lot of natural sunlight during the day. There was a large bed with a canopy. Everything was covered in ornate patterns. It was a beautiful room. I might be more of a character artist than a background artist, but if I had the materials I'd be using the room as reference. Some maids showed up not long after I had finished looking around the space. They delivered the promised clothes, and 6 blank scrolls, a cloth pull-string bag, a few quills, a few bottles of ink, a cleaning clothe and a bottle for water. It was far more than I expected. I went behind the half wall and passed them all of the dirty clothes I had on. Instead of putting the new clothes on right away, I decided to wash up in the room's bathroom. Given the historical setting I really wasn't expecting much, but god bless anime contrivance. Sure, there wasn't running water, and I still had to use a chamber pot, but the soaps, conditioner and lotions provided were practically modern. India might have had the start of modern shampoo 3000 some years ago, but that wouldn't hold a candle to this. I had to be frugal with the water since I only had one large pot of it, but I managed to achieve a near normal level of clean. I caught my reflection in a mirror I only just noticed. Was this wish-fulfillment? Or just anime? My proportions felt the same, and that was definitely my bone structure. But seeing my breasts have some lift without a bra on was weird. I even ran around earlier without these lumps painfully bouncing around. It was unsettling, but extremely convenient. This couldn't be real life. Maybe I was in a self-indulgent fanfiction. I laughed at the thought. I shouldn't stand around naked. It was time to put on my new clothes. As someone who grew up in the preforming arts, and did historical reenacting (gov funded & SCA), I knew I could figure out how to put on whatever they had supplied me -I just wouldn't necessarily know the proper names for things. There was a white tunic, an over skirt, and a long cloth that reminded me of a cloth belt more than a decorative sash. They probably got me such nice things because I was a guest of a King. The tunic was tight in the usual places though. I didn't have any pins, so I had to leave the top unfastened. When tying the belt it pulled the front together more so the makeshift v-neck wasn't as exposing at least. The skirt was too long so I had to fold the top. If it wasn't for the cloth belt securing both tightly to my waist none of it would have fit. When I looked in the mirror I couldn't shake the feeling that an up-do would compliment the outfit. Luckily, I know how to put my hair in a bun with nothing to hold it. It wouldn't stay if I ran around, but I foresaw a lot of sitting down in my future so that wasn't a problem. My flip-flops didn't exactly complete the look, but whatever. Staring at my reflection gave me an odd feeling. I had worn similar enough clothes before as a reenactor, but I wasn't reenacting or dressing up for the fun of it. Clothes like these were going to become my new normal. And if I wanted my original clothes to last, I'd have to pack them away and never wear them again. I wasn't ready to visually discard my home yet. I felt tears forming. The Balbadd arc was technically over, but that didn't mean I had time to mourn yet. This wasn't just mourning my home. Thinking about my original clothes brought up the memory of Sinbad collapsing and bleeding on me which lead to the memory of people bleeding out on the street. If only I had acted sooner. If only I hadn't taken as long to accept that I'm here and should live in the present. I vowed to not allow anything like this to happen again. I started thinking about the future. It was easier than mourning. In the manga it states that the time between the end of the Balbadd arc and when King Sinbad returns from visiting the Kou Empire is six months, and that that was four months since the last time Alibaba saw the king. I couldn't explain it, but I could feel that fate would flow like in the manga instead of the anime in at least this aspect. Knowing I was going to be basically useless as a prophet for six months didn't sit well with me. I needed to think hard about the future and what I could do to change it -as well as what I shouldn't say. I had already promised that I would explain about the 2 times the world would almost be destroyed. The second time was Sinbad's fault. Could I really tell him this early that he would choose to destroy the world in the pursuit of his own greed? I didn't think so -especially not with David practically watching everything Sinbad does. There were roughly two years until the dark spot would form in Mognostadt, and Aladdin would agree to tell all of the leaders the story of the previous world. It was hearing that story paired with his savior/god complex and greed that sent Sinbad down the path of using David, and breaking into the Sacred Palace. There was a chance to prevent Aladdin from telling that story, but if I couldn't then I'd need to influence Sinbad enough that he wouldn't make the same decisions. I'd have 2 months to try to bond with Sinbad before he'd leave for the Kou Empire. Would it be worth the risk to try to go with him? Only 2 years until the turning point isn't a lot of time. The memory of Sinbad calling me "amazing" made me think that I had a chance to become someone he'd trust. At least I had already been making some kind of progress on Plan B. Plan A was making sure that Sinbad and co would arrive at Mognostadt before Aladdin would make the deal with Kouen. Depending on how early they got there, they might have to deal with the Reim's airships and bombs. Reim might have decided to join the Seven Seas Alliance right before the battle, but the Reim technology had caught everyone off guard. I actually knew how blimps and those explosives worked. Hell, with the magicians working in Sindria, all they'd need would be the knowledge of how the natural world works and they'd be able to exploit it much better than Reim by combining science with their magic. I had been a teacher for six years, a draftsman in tech for four years, and grew up in a science household. so I knew I had what was needed to bring this world into the modern era before Sinbad would in the manga. But should I do it? Sinbad had seemed interested in the technology of my world when I explained zippers. I could probably sell some of my knowledge. Then I'd be able to save up, so I'd be able to survive after running out of prophecies. I pulled out a scroll and made some test marks. Where would I start explaining the science behind blimps? How air isn't one thing? Would it be worth explaining to not use helium since it's flammable? Do I bother explaining the periodic table of elements? The affects heat has on air currents and weather? What about the flight mechanics of bird wings to make gliders or planes? I'd make it easy to understand later. For now I would write as much as I could remember. I left blank spaces here and there to go back to so I could fill in whatever I'd forgotten -I definitely didn't leave enough space in a few spots. I also made many diagrams. Isekai, or anime magic? Whatever it was, I adjusted much faster to using a quill pen than I anticipated. I had experimented with dip pens before and even made my own out of bamboo for a class, but I was never this fast or clean. The ink was slow to dry, so I let the scrolls hang off the table as I progressed along it. When I got stuck on how to explain something, I switched scrolls and wrote down everything that had happened and changed since I was Isekaied. It would help me figure out how things might change in the future. I didn't write down anything about the future directly just in case. This also gave me an excuse to draw for the first time in days. Since I was Isekaied 4 days ago, 2020 October 3rd, that meant it would be the 7th back home. I was missing all of the October art challenges. "'Remember Oct 3rd.'" I couldn't help but laugh. Fullmetal Alchemist had been a major hyper fixation for me back in middle school when it first came to the states. I even had 2 state alchemist pocket watches with that exact phrase etched on the inside. Now that phrase had a whole new meaning for me. I made a note to recreate all of my favorite stories if I could find the time -or at least write down as much as I could remember. I switched to writing about weather patterns.

The longer I wrote the easier it got. It still took a while with my poor night vision, but eventually my eyes did adjust to the light. I was on a roll or 4 (scroll pun). These scrolls were like a science fever dream. I even made one on biology and atoms and stuff. *Knock knock* I was surprised that someone was visiting so late. But then I could see the door very easily from the desk. I quickly turned to look at the windows. Sure enough, I had done an all-nighter. That would explain my growing headache. Maids were at the door. They returned my clothes. Most of the blood was out of the hoodie, but there were still a few spots along the seams where the stains didn't fully fade. You wouldn't see them unless you were looking for them though. The maids also told me that King Sinbad had a large breakfast prepared for everyone. I wanted to go -really- but the Kou fleet was coming and I wanted to pack ahead of time. I asked that they send my apologies and requested food be brought to me instead. My hands were shaking. Was it emotional or just physical exhaustion? I hadn't slept for 2 days in a row. I packed my clothes while I waited for the scrolls to dry more. It was nearly mid morning by the time the ink dried so I could finish. I left the room with everything I owned. I didn't plan on coming back. I couldn't find anyone until I left and saw Morgiana helping give out food. She let me know that everyone else was already at the Palace. I had been afraid that might be the case. I didn't know if I'd be allowed in, but I made my way there.

God’s Watching, Put on a Show || Chapter XIV

It seemed shame and guilt were now constants in her life, far more fervent and unrelenting than it was before; the things Eve did that night were things she would have to take to her grave.

She lay on her stomach, mere inches away from the door, using the little light that seeped in from the hall to read. By no means was it ideal, but she’d take what she could get. Better to have sore limbs than an angry mother discovering her reading (and a gay book, no less!) if she goes to check why the lights are still on.

The book – she considered it a diary for a good while based on formatting, but she couldn’t call it that anymore, not after what was in it – was finished in a single, somewhat uncomfortable sitting. Despite of all the questionable morals and queer subject matter, she practically gobbled it up, forgoing sleep, near unblinking in her pursuit to find out what happens next.

What she was more ashamed of, though, was the fact that Lilith’s note never did leave her hand, always cradled in her palm, her fingers tracing over the letters absentmindedly, thumb dancing over the corners. It stayed in her grasp long after she hid the book away. She pressed it to her chest, feeling the constant pitter-patter of her heart just beneath the paper, just beneath her clothing, just beneath her flesh, just beneath her ribs.

It beat. No matter how hard she willed it to stop. It beat for Lilith.

She longed to press her lips to the letter, where Lilith’s hands once were. What did Lilith think of while writing this for her? Of all the words she could have used, of all the things she could’ve written…

With love.

Her mind spun a fantasy from memories of them, earlier and yesterday and the day before that, from the brief period of them knowing each other, a mixture of yearning and delusion and of darkness, making her hope and wish, no matter how wrong it may be, that the dot just after Lilith’s name was a heart. It looked like a heart, if you squinted at the top. It could have been a heart. She’d scribbled things in the margins of her notebooks and knew that sometimes ink bleed, and what should have been a tiny heart became a mere dot. The thick, dark pentel pen obscured Lilith’s intent from her.

Love.

Eve wanted it to be a heart. She wanted so much more than that, though. She wanted to kiss the letter. She wanted to kiss Lilith.

Even thinking that, a silent confession in the confines of her mind, made everything hurt. A karmic punishment (or so she thought). It made her chest ache and clench, her breath quicken, her palms sweat.

The crucifix dangled overhead, a reminder of her sin, her greed, the promise of heaven the threat of hell. Eve should not want. To want is to sin. And yet, she did.

Her eyes drifted from the letter for the first time in hours.

It scared her, that crucifix and all that it meant.

But it did nothing to stop her want.

She pulled the covers over her, hiding from horrified parents, from disgusted friends, from an unjust world, from a cruel God. It wasn’t the same as when she cocooned herself in Lilith’s embrace, wasn’t the same as when she buried her face in the crook of Lilith’s neck. It didn’t even come close. But she would have to make do.

Under her quilt, she sighed. Relief. But not only that. In that breath was longing and sorrow and love. Oh, so much love. How could a single breath contain it all? Her fingers trembled. Even under the cover of darkness, her chest ached. Whether it was the tender ache of love or that of fear gripping her didn’t matter. Could she tell the difference at this point?

She held the paper gingerly and, at long last, pressed her lips to the letter, to Lilith’s name, to the small dot she still wanted to be a heart. Her actions were soft, gentle, careful as to not crumple the note. And again, lips grazing over the letter smoothly.

One of her hands let go of the paper, moving down, rustling the soft fabric of her nightgown as it passed her stomach and went lower still.

Her fingers twitched. Hesitance.

Then a sigh, barely heard through the sounds of frantically shifting fabric.

Another soft kiss to the paper. A stifled gasp.

It was sunrise by the time she poked her head out of the covers, panting.

Eve sat next to Lilith in homeroom, silent despite the hustle and bustle of the room; most girls having gotten up to talk to each other and compare clubs while it wasn’t too late to switch.

She could feel it, even now, her bathwater scalding like hellfire, pelting down on her skin as harsh as hail. Her fingers were still pruney from the long shower. The flush of her irritated skin hadn’t gone down by much, either, though she couldn’t tell if it was from the heat of her shower or the lingering shame. Her thighs burned something fierce, a mixture of near-boiling water and constant, repentant scrubbing.

A self-inflicted punishment.

“You shouldn’t have done that,” She whispered.

Eve didn’t really think she had the right to judge the other for stealing the books, especially after what she’d done, but cruel and horrible as it was both to her and Lilith, chastising another would make her feel better.

If only marginally.

Lilith didn’t even respond, a mere eyebrow raise her only answer.

A dare to continue? A display of anger, annoyance?

She couldn’t tell.

Still, she went on.

“It was library property. You can’t just take a book out of the library without borrowing it, that’s stealing.”

Nothing she said made the burning stop. It was as if hell itself had come to make a home within her, a now dirty, violated temple of the lord. The shame didn’t fade and the guilt still sat deep in her chest, her stomach. She’d scoop it out if she could.

Wasn’t that a pretty image? Her hands deep in her ribs, black sludge flowing freely from her innards, its source unknown by anyone but God. Her sin coming to a physical fruition via the dark liquid rising in her throat, spewing out gruesomely, grotesquely. Maybe it would choke her. Or maybe she would just explode.

“Why’d you take the book?”

Lilith’s expression finally morphed from what she thought was a questioning passiveness to a sad smile. It wasn’t like her other smiles, but just like before, it was like the girl knew something she didn’t.

“So I could give it to you.”

She felt like crying again, a frustrated, incredulous sob rising in her throat. Even after everything she’d already seen, after everything that had already happened, she could hardly comprehend Lilith’s words.

Sensing this, Lilith spoke again: “I did it for you.”

It was said so simply, so easily, despite the weight it held, like an anvil turned feather, but not quite; the weight was there, mind you, but Lilith was all too happy to carry it.

“And it’s not stealing,” She argued, shrugging, “it didn’t have the sticker so it wasn’t in the system. Nobody besides you even knew it was there.”

“Still.”

A second passed. It was neither tense or relaxed, more expectant than anything else, Lilith knowing she was going to say something more.

“The note…”

Said item sat squarely in her skirt pocket, folded and protected by her embroidered handkerchief. She tried leaving it at home. It had been slid under the base of her antique lamp before she rose and showered. But the fear of it being discovered lingered, leading her to pocket it before leaving.

That wasn’t the only reason she couldn’t leave it behind, though.

For barely underneath the fear was longing, a longing to be close to the note, to hold it to her. Even now, her fingers twitched, aching to palm it under the table, just out of view.

“What about it?”

Thoughts of the dot echoed in her mind and she vaguely pondered whether confirming Lilith’s intent was worth seeming utterly delusional.

“Did you… mean that?”

“Mean what?”

It could’ve been anything, the answer to that question. Just yesterday when Lilith said it was going to be okay. When she said taking care of someone wasn’t tiring, not when it was her. The time Lilith deserved someone better than a man who only cared for her looks. The note, the thing she was actually here to ask about.

“Love.” Her only answer; the only word brave enough to dare go past her lips, the only one she could form despite the near-overwhelming myriad of possible replies.

She didn’t even know if it would be enough.

“Eve,” Lilith smiled again, tender and filled with what could only be… “When have I ever lied to you?”

And it was.

For the both of them, it was enough.

As a little side note tho, CHRISTMAS BREAK STARTS SOON!! I’m an atheist so I don’t actually celebrate it tho since I live with my very Catholic family who doesn’t know I’m an atheist i also sorta do,,,,, bUT THAT’S NOT WHAT THIS IS ABOUT!!!! I’m telling y’all about the break mostly because it starts on the sixteenth of December and ends two of January which is like,,,,,,, a lot of time to write so please stay tuned for that 💛

My fashion queen, incredibly important question: How would one go about figuring out fashion *style* for characters? I've noticed your OCs always have a Look(TM), and I've gathered from your blog (and fics) that you've got an eye for aestethics - please, could you give me advice at least where to *start*. I'm completely unaware of fashion and, frankly, completely overwhelmed at the prospect of just starting..

Ah! Previous Anon again - forgot to add a more specific question about fashion (I’m squeezing in 2 quesiton in one xD). Do you have fashion advice for sleek/distant female character’s clothing that doesn’t hinge on formal dresses? (as is discernable, I have literally NO idea what a Grown Ass, Self Respecting Woman would wear)

wow. that’s high praise. when i got this yesterday morning, i knew i wanted to give it the answer it deserved. this is over 1500 words long, so apologies to anyone on mobile, but i wasn’t letting go until i’d really sunk my teeth into it.

unfortunately, since you’re anon, i don’t know enough about your character to suggest anything specific. instead, i want to take a step back and see if we can solve the root of the problem - “where do i start?”

when i was a teenager, an english teacher told me this: “the biggest constraint in writing is no constraint at all.” when you have the whole spectrum of something - in this case, clothes - to pick from, it is overwhelming. the natural human instinct is to freeze up. so while it may sound strange, if you’re just starting out, you might feel better if you have some constraints to work within.

with that in mind, you can treat finding a ‘signature look’ for your character like solving a murder mystery. you eliminate all the suspects that don’t fit until you know enough to narrow it down to the one that does. that’s going to involve something else you’ll recognize from murder mysteries: you’re going to have to interrogate the character. open them up and get to know them - their background, their likes and dislikes, their quirks, the role they play in the world around them. every answer will give you clues and weed other things out, and eventually, you’ll get a box small enough that you feel comfortable working in it.

now, i love fashion, and i love using clothes to send messages about a character’s personality. so as someone who’s had that interest for my whole life, i work from the other end. the constraints happen, in large part, without me thinking about them. i tend to zoom right to a certain aesthetic or item of clothing, say, “okay, what outfit can i build with this,” and go from there. but since you’ve said you’re “unaware” of fashion and it’s intimidating to you, i’ll try to ease you in through a different route and see whether that helps.

so, if we’re going to pick your character apart, let’s think about some practical questions first:

what setting does your character live in?

if you’ve narrowed your setting down to a historical decade, you’ll find most of the style questions already - firmly! - answered for you. for example, a victorian woman would, by default, wear skirts. if the character is contemporary, you’ve got a lot more wiggle room. if you want to mess with historical fashion rules for symbolic or story purposes, awesome, but i think that’s probably more advanced than you’re looking for right now.

if the setting is fantasy or sci-fi, what’s its dominant aesthetic? is it cyberpunk? sleek ~apple~ sci-fi? or is it more like star wars? is it medieval fantasy? woodsy faerie fantasy? JRPG-style fantasy? you get the idea.

what does your character do?

speaks for itself. what’s their job?

what is your character like, just in general?

this is where everything you know about their personality goes. if they’re a fussy courtier who’s worried about their reputation and appearance, they’re probably not going to be comfortable in plain, casual clothes.

what can your character afford to wear?

again, speaks for itself. do they buy designer brands? are they trying their best with what they have? or are they super strapped for cash and just have to get the job done?

does their social scene have an easily-identifiable aesthetic that you could work with?

does your character wear urban/street fashion or preppy rich-kid clothes? are they part of a subculture that dresses in a certain way, like teddy boys? do they have the desire or freedom to go all-in with that style, or do they have to play it down, like being corporate goth?

do they need to wear something they could travel, do hard work, or fight in?

goes with the job question above. do they need some kind of outerwear or accessory where they can hide weapons? do they always need to be ready, or is it situational?

basically, where does the character’s aesthetic need to sit on a chart of form vs. function?

what do other characters who are similar to your character wear?

look at your favorite movies, games, and TV shows and see what professional designers are doing with characters like yours. what colors and cuts are they using? what other elements do they choose? do you like them? if you don’t like them, what would you change? sometimes you can learn more from what you hate than what you love.

hopefully, you’ve already culled a huge swath of fashion ideas that you Know You’re Not Going To Do. you may still not know what you do want to do, either! that’s fine. let’s move onto some more artsy questions:

are there any colors your character would prefer or avoid?

it sounds silly. it’s not. a limited color palette will go a long way toward making a character’s outfits look unified and purposeful. obviously, in real life, most people don’t restrict themselves as much as fictional characters do. but if you were a costume designer, you’d want to have some guideposts to work with.

are there any motifs you associate with your character?

animals, elements, religious or cultural symbols, plants - you can sneak all these into their clothes’ details. maybe their dress has beading in the shape of a peacock, or rose earrings, or icy sparkles, or a bear pelt for a cloak.

have fun with meanings! moon motifs for mysteriousness, poisonous flowers, etc. let your inner lit major out.

do you want your character to have a certain silhouette?

this may seem odd if you’re just going to be writing your character and not drawing them, but think about it anyway. do you want to emphasize that your character is tall? is everything they wear skintight? do they have a large, unique hat?

a great example of this is maleficent. not only does she have a horn-shaped headdress, her huge, flowing robe tells us there’s a much bigger power in her than her body would suggest.

is there a certain ethos you want their clothes to project? what, in their world, would do that? what in our world would do that?

let’s say you want your character to look very powerful, to the point where people would find their looks alone intimidating. should they wear sharp, simple, severe clothes, maybe in dark colors? or should they wear very embellished clothes, like royalty? what are your setting’s ideas about beauty? modesty? does your character play by the rules, or do you want them to stand out?

what colors, shapes, and styles appeal to you personally?

for all the time i’ve spent talking about restrictions and guidelines, it’s important not to lose the fun of it, either. use your favorite color! give them clothes you’d want to wear in real life! character style is a playground where you can let wish fulfillment run wild.

at any time, feel free to turn to google or wikipedia if you’re not sure how to answer one of these questions. if you see an interesting idea, pick it up and follow it - what you’re doing here is training your eye, and that’s how you’ll learn. that said, if you’re already intimidated, i wouldn’t dive too deep into couture/aesthetic blogs until i had a more solid grip on how i wanted the character to look. it comes back to what i said earlier - there is such a thing as too much to choose from, especially when you’re not sure what you should be looking for yet.

there’s one other thing i want to mention that can help bring a character’s wardrobe together: repetition. if you’re planning several outfits for a character instead of just one, echo some of the motifs, shapes, or colors from one to the next. they don’t all have to be identical takes on the same thing, but if they have certain traits in common, they’ll feel less like separate outfits and more like a matched set. they could all be in members of the same color family or have similar patterns on them. maybe your character has a certain accessory that they wear with everything. you get the idea.

while i may not be able to plan your character’s wardrobe outright, i hope this makes the whole process seem more straightforward. or that it gives you some ideas to work with, or any other kind of help you might take away from it. this post is getting unfathomably long, so i’ll wrap it up, but i’d be happy to put any of my own characters through a “question test” like this one if you’d like to see how it works in practice.

finally, if you can find an interview with an artist or costume designer who worked on something you like, those things are worth their weight in gold. i read an interview with colleen atwood when i was in middle school, and it revolutionized the way i thought about fashion and storytelling. and when i say “revolutionized,” i mean “i owe basically everything i just told you to that article.” dig into them and see how they think and talk about their art! they’re more qualified to teach you than i ever will be.

And then there are others, who hoard their pasts, who cling to it with everything they have, clutching it to their chests.

Jet was, as her garage would bear witness to, that second kind of person. It was a tangled morass of boxes and baubles, spelling out and over each other, video tapes with recorded moments she would never watch, and audio tapes with words she would never listen to, but it was enough for her to know that they were there, to know that somehow the ephemeral moments of her life had been carved in somewhere, that they were permanent and real and could not be forgotten.

She had fantasies, sometimes, of having a freezer or a car in it, rather than the accumulated memories of a number of years of life she would only mumble, but it always seemed to be a goal for later.

Next week. Next month. Soon, soon, but not now.

Maybe she just didn’t want to be faced with the specter of decision. Maybe ebay was too difficult to work with, and she couldn’t just throw it away. Maybe it was too much to look at every moment of her past, painstakingly boxed up, to bring it into the light and remember. Maybe she was just lazy.

Even she wasn’t sure, most days.

But today she was looking for something particular, and though she did not know where exactly, she knew it lay in one of the quiet cardboard tombs in the dusty, overheated mausoleum connected to her house.

She flipped on the light, and it dully illuminated the stacks of stuff, the light flickering for a moment and casting sharp shadows like teeth on the wall.

If Jet noticed it, if she felt the strangeness in the air, she paid it no mind, in the way all people often miss the small points of oddity in their lives, those little, barely-lit warning signs.

“I’ve gotta clean this out this spring.” She said to no one in particular, another hypothetical date that existed reassuringly on the calendar, promising that this was not forever, that it would someday be clean and neat and free and uncluttered by the detritus of a past that seemed only vaguely to belong to her now.

She walked back, slipping between the stacks of boxes as alleyways in a city she barely remembered, hidden from the light by the shadows they threw.

Maybe it was in this box. She opened it, a tuft of dust rising into the air and scrawling words she only saw on the edge of her mind against the sunlight. She pawed through it, unable to find what she was looking for, each touch of her hand unleashing another thought, another memory, the faded photographs of people she once knew in her mind. She smiled and she frowned, each memory linked to something else, something forgotten and hidden in the labyrinthine corrugated passageways of her own mind.

No. It wasn’t there.

She shut the box, and turned around to find another, nearly running into a wall of cardboard right behind her.

Her mouth twisted in annoyance. She didn’t remember that being there, but that didn’t mean anything. This place was packed, she’d tripped in here enough times before, it hardly seemed interesting. She toddled over to another box, and then another, each puff of dust screaming its own thought, its own memory, into the air, blowing past Jet’s face as she shooed it away.

There were things she barely remembered keeping in here. She must have, obviously, they wouldn’t be here, and in small, fleeting moments she found herself flipping between wondering why she had kept it at all and resolving that she needed it, that it connected her to something, somehow.

That these junk-cobbled monuments to her life made her feel real.

She had wasted too much time here in the garage. She must have, because it had gotten dark, and the stacks of boxes had turned from brown to grey in the dimming light, stacked taller than she remembered, over her head easily now.

It wasn’t here. She sighed heavily, frustrated and upset, and moved back toward the house, winnowing her way through the stacks in a fluid motion.

But the boxes kept going.

She turned around, unsure of where she had come in, and there was a stack of sports lithographs behind her, laid across the boxes in a grim rictus that she was sure she hadn’t done. It must have been a joke by someone. A mean one.

She turned the other way, and accidentally smacked her hand against a box, a sheaf of papers falling from it and surrounding her in a tempest of memory, only able to catch certain word as they whirled around her.

Remember. Here. You. You’re. Here. Remember. Now. You. Want. Now. Here.

The papers dropped around her like a sudden rain, and she looked up.

The doll. It had been a gift and a curse, she’d hated that thing, and she was about to throw it to the ground in disgust.

The doll’s head turned, and it stared at her with its dead, unseeing eyes, and saw everything.

She hadn’t kept that doll. She hadn’t wanted that doll. Oh, she had remembered that doll enough for a thousand years, and yet it was here, it was here impossibly. She had gotten rid of it, she hadn’t kept it, she got--

It giggled. She giggled, the malice in it dripping with humanity.

“It’s all here, Jet. It’s all here.” Her eyes glittered with cruel delight.

And it was, it was all here and it was all dead and it was all empty and it all wanted to take her.

She went to run, and did not trip, but was pushed, a strong ceramic hand on her back, throwing her off the ground and into the air.

She began to fall, the landing as if it would never come, just Jet, flying through the air, the collected moments of her life suspended around her as if in amber, frozen in horror as the tapes began to play, the images and words from an entire life consuming her with each light of her brain, each connected memory to an individual joy or pain, unable to opt out of any of them, lithographs and hats and posters and cards, all these scraps of paper whirling around her, screaming read me now, read me now, read me now and forever.

That giggle, hungry and mean, started up again. “This is what you wanted, isn’t it? These are your things, and you will have them forever. Forever and ever.”

She would be crushed under the weight of these boxes, under the weight of her own life, and no one would know. No one would hear her scream, her own cries muffled by errant scarves and band t-shirts drawn over her mouth, the stale scent of them sickening her.

There was a grip on her wrist, tight and unrelenting, pulling her out of the syrup of her own memories, near yanking her arm out of the socket.

“Fuckin--” Jet had never been so glad to hear an annoyed, high-pitched swear in her life as she tripped and fell, falling for real now, falling like you did in the world, and she was very nearly grateful for the pain of it.

But she did not have a moment to rest, shoved to her feet as the avalanche of items continued, pulled along by a small blur of fury, calling her name and telling her to move. It should have been impossible, she should have been stuck, and yet her feet fell in step behind, the roar of every box coming toward them as a furious wave pounding in her ears, the length of her garage miles now, huffing and puffing but never being allowed to stop, the pull at her wrist unceasing.

She was reminded of a tugboat, tiny and fierce, pulling a bigger ship back into harbor.

There was light. There was light, and they were moving toward it.

Jet got to experience in the incandescent joy of being back in the world as her knees hit the concrete, and she could feel the blooming flowers of the deep bruises growing there. The sun was warm on her back, and the world was quiet again, the only sounds those of passing cars and Jet’s own breath.

She sat and stared at the garage, so very ordinary looking now, bordering on mundane.

The small woman looked over at her from her spot on the grass where she’d tumbled, and blew her bangs out of her face. “I told you to clean out your fucking gar--”

This is another one of those dreams where it’s just - there’s no goal to achieve or problem to resolve, there’s just the basic premise of the world, and then I’m free to do whatever I want. In this case, the world was….the Internet, apparently. I mean, it looked like quaint cobblestones 1930s-esque London, but like on the shop windows instead of advertising things like “Cashier Wanted Walk-In Interview $1500/monthly salary” it was like “NPCs/mooks wanted, 500 gold per engagement”.

I had no house or food or anything except the clothes on my back and I had no idea how or why the heck I was there, so I decided that the first thing I ought to do was to get a job so I could get some money, and thereby perhaps rent a motel room for the night and get some food. So I applied to one of the random advertisements I saw looking for cannon fodder/NPCs.

Apparently the number of NPC openings are small and very competitive and you need to have pretty good acting skills because it’s a lot more dialogue heavy. So in the end I got a job as cannon fodder for this medieval-looking RPG whose name I cannot remember. The game masters/my employers gave me some medieval looking clothing (leather tunic, boots, etc), a cardboard sword covered in tinfoil, and a bag of gold and items to hold. My job was basically to run at the player character, give him/her some sort of perfunctory fight, then let them kill me and loot all the items I was carrying. Getting killed was fortunately not permanent. Every time I died I’d just respawn in the prep chamber, which was this clinical looking white room with blue lights, then I’d have to go out again, rinse and repeat. I found it quite fun the first couple of times, but after about 5 rounds or so I got kind of weary. Although death isn’t permanent within the RPG, it sure hurts. Getting impaled with swords and arrows and being beaten to death with spiked clubs really does make you start to dread it after a while.

(”Whaddya mean, ‘you start to dread it after a while’?!” you’re probably asking, aghast. I’m sorry, I kinda enjoy getting into physical fights, okay? It’s much more exciting than running on a treadmill.)

Thankfully at around the fifth iteration the game masters pulled me out of the respawn chamber before I had to go in again, and gave me my pay (2500 gold!! Not bad for intense pain and agony and dying 5 times over. :D), and told me to take a rest and report again in 2 days. Apparently cannon fodder can’t work more than 7 shifts (read: deaths) per day and it’s mandatory to have at least a day’s break between work days (when you respawn all the physical injuries are gone, but apparently your nerves are still firing like crazy and your brain takes longer to get used to the whole thing), but they start new recruits out a bit slower cuz the whole “dying several times in a day” needs some getting used to. NPCs can work every day though, cuz they just sit in a corner and be like “I need to brew a potion for my sick child! Please gather 40 mushroom caps and 5 green nettles!”

Anyway after that I wandered around the streets to find a place to eat dinner and spend the night. I thought 2500 gold was a lot of money but my dinner cost me 10 gold and the motel room was 40 gold a night, so. (Okay, fine, I probably could’ve spent less on dinner. It’s just that at the time I felt like I deserved it after dying 5 times, and I saw a really pretty pink cocktail that the motel bar was advertising and I bought 2 of them. It was called Pink Fantasy and it tasted amazing. Pros and cons of having all your senses working perfectly in dreams. You get to feel every last bit of agony for every injury. On the other hand, you get to taste awesome stuff that would probably be subject to a 200% alcohol tax in real life.) I suppose it’s a viable living, but dangerously near the poverty line. It probably would’ve taken me forever to save up for some decent clothes. Good thing I woke up back in the real world after going to bed in the motel.

Week 10

Day 2 - Narrative research

Today I was briefed on the next essay and unit that is contained within the essay.I found that the essay revolves around narrative and is a 1500 word essay on a short film or feature length film. I found that story is what is told and discourse is how a story is told.I also found that plots should be connected and complete , self contained and contain a movement or change. I found this lecture beneficial in developing my understanding of narrative structure as it opened my eyes to Freytags pyramid and the different modifications used when structuring a narrative.

Week 11

Day 2 - Narrative essay

Today in the Narrative essay lecture I learned the types of question I would have to choose for the essay itself the selection was as follows:

Analyse your chosen Narrative with close reference to the Hero’s journey or another appropriate template

Make a proppean analysis of an animated fairy tale and explain animations suitability for telling fantastical tales

Stories have been described as an engine for social change.Analyse your chosen narrative with reference to its social or moral purpose and the techniques used to convey this.

I also found out in this lecture that there are specific shapes of a story which generally include either conflict or non conflict. For this exercise I had to create a story around a chocolate Santa and produce a story with either conflict or non conflict. I found that this helped to show the difference between how a story could be told. I also discovered that character and complication is a useful route for a story with most of these stories thriving on conflict.

Furthermore, later in the lecture I found Coleridge mechanic vs organic form of story telling where a mechanic form uses a pre existent sago and can be described as ‘wet clay in a mould.’ The Organic form develops itself from within and is shaped by its own development and that a good poem is like a growing plot.

In addition I found that an act is a part of a story consisting of individual scenes and originates from theatre which was signalled by the curtains closing. Sequences are from early cinema where a film reel would stop after 10 minutes.

The classic Hollywood story includes 3 acts. Act one is where the character is up on a metaphorical tree , act two is where the character has rocks thrown at him/her and the final act is where the character gets down from the tree.

This lecture revolved around question two and explained the importance of fairytales and that they are ready made stories for animators to choose from. The origins of fairy tales revolve around Marchen which are popular fairytales that are oral in origin and prepare written record, so its difficult to be sure about their exact origins many are thousands of years old. Kirstmarchen are literally and artistic fairytales. At first fairytales where not intended for children and there is a clear distinction between what is good and what is evil.

It was not until the Disney rendition of fairytales which truly highlighted the difference of storytelling. Disney fairytales relied heavily on fantasy and the happily ever after ending.This often led to criticism as Disney fairytales reinforced patriarchal story and stereotypes.

I also learned about Olrik and the law of twins where two people can appear together in the same role and should be similar in nature.I also learned about the law of patterning where situations and events are told and retold in as similar matter as possible.

Functions of characters serve as stable, constant elements in a tale and are independent of how and by whom they are fulfilled. They constitute the fundament components of a tale.

All plot types have constants and variables. Any basic plot will have stable elements and variable elements.If we decide for example that the quest is basic plot then we can say that a static element is that it will always involve a journey. A variable would be the destination.

There are two types of hero in a fairytale one that directly suffers from the action of the villain in a complication called a victim hero. There is also a seeker hero who liquidates the misfortune or has a lack of another person. The villain appears twice in a fairytale at first he will make a sudden appearance from outside.The second appearance is a person who has been sought out.

Week 13

Day 2- Narrative Research essay

Today I watched the film up and decided to place the characters into Christopher Vogler's theory on archetypes. Also creating a plot summary regarding the film.I found this lecture eye opening into looking into the story further looking at the themes of mentorship and family within the film.

Plot summary-

Carl frederickson is a little boy who is a dreamer and grows old with his wife Ellie who ensures an essence of adventure in him.They both want to live at paradise falls in south America as they are fascinated boy Charles Muntz a famous explorer. After the death of Ellie Carl becomes insular and does not want to move from his house. Ultimately it takes a call to action of him hitting a worker from the construction company with the consequences of him being placed in a retirement home as a result and his house being demolished for him to leave the area He begins to fly to paradise falls were he hears a knock at the door thousands of feet in the air, this introduces him to Russel a wilderness explorer who had knocked at Carls door previously. Carl tries to take Russel home but a storm ensues.

The house is knocked around in the turbulence but Carl manages to tie most of his items down before falling asleep. He's woken the next morning by Russell, who tells him that they're over South America. Carl releases some balloons to descend but they hit ground early and are knocked out of the house. As they reach the other end of the falls they decide to walk the rest of the way due to the balloons deflating.

Meanwhile, a chase is progressing in the jungle. Russell stops to go to the bathroom and happens upon a giant bird which he lures closer with a chocolate bar. He introduces the colourful creature to Carl and gives it the name Kevin. Kevin follows them as they continue their journey but runs off when they approach the silhouette of a man who calls out to them. However, they see that the man is nothing more than a trick of the eye caused by overlapping stones. They are then approached by a golden retriever with a red light on his collar. Russell tells him to sit and speak and is surprised when the dog answers, using the device on his collar. He tells them his name is Dug and that he is a tracker looking for a bird, at which point Kevin tackles him. They continue on to paradise falls and find none other than Charles Muntz who has been looking for Kevin for many years as he tries to repair his reputation.

Muntz invites them into The Spirit of Adventure as guests, but his behaviour soon turns hostile when he finds out that Russell has adopted a new pet bird. Muntz reveals a table of head mannequins wearing various headgear and grimly knocks each one off with his cane as he describes the stories their wearers told him; claiming that each one was actually after his bird. Carl and Russell run away from the zeppelin just as Muntz discovers the bird calling out from the roof of Carl's home. Riding on Kevin's back and assisted by Dug, who calls Carl his new master, they barely escape capture by Muntz's dogs, though Kevin is injured in the process. Carl agrees to help Kevin get back to her babies safely but, just before Kevin can re-enter her labyrinth home, a net flies out and captures her. Muntz and his dogs have arrived in the zeppelin, led to the spot by a tracking device on Dug's collar. Muntz throws a lantern beneath Carl's home, setting fire to it. Carl ignores Kevin and runs over to extinguish the flames as Muntz takes Kevin on board and leaves. Angry and disheartened, Carl yells at Dug and tells Russell that he's taking his home to Paradise Falls if it kills him. He manages to set his house down on the Falls, but loses Russell's respect for leaving Kevin.

Carl goes inside the house and sits down to look at Ellie's adventure book. Saddened that she never got to see the Falls, he is about to close it when he discovers added pictures near the end, documenting their life together. On the last page is a note written by Ellie that says thanks for the adventure, now go have a new one! Enlightened and inspired, Carl goes outside in time to see Russell take off with a few balloons, using a leaf blower as propulsion. Carl empties his home of extra furniture, allowing it to become airborne once again, and follows Russell. He finds Dug on his porch and happily exclaims that Dug is his dog and he is his master. Russell manages to sneak aboard Muntz's zeppelin but is quickly caught and tied to a chair. Muntz sits him on the ships bomb-bay doors and flips the switch for them to open. Carl flies in and manages to rescue Russell in time, setting him inside the house while he goes into the zeppelin with Dug to fetch Kevin. He is able to distract the guard dogs with a tennis ball from his walker and frees Kevin but is confronted by Muntz. They engage in a sword fight while Russell, freed of his ties, fights off a squadron of dogs in fighter planes. He regains control of the house and returns to help Carl, who has climbed to the top of the zeppelin with Kevin. Dug has, meanwhile, faced off against Alpha and outsmarted him, effectively becoming the new alpha, and runs off to meet the others topside.

Kevin, Dug, and Carl run for the house which Russell has landed on the wing of the zeppelin, but Muntz appears with a rifle and shoots at them, causing the house to slip and dangle in the air. Carl struggles to hold onto the house with the hose while Muntz goes in after Kevin. Carl lures Kevin, carrying Dug and Russell, out of the house with chocolate and Muntz attempts to jump out of the window after them. He doesn't make the jump as his foot gets caught in some balloon strings and, weighing too much for the balloons to support him, he falls to his death. As Kevin, Dug, and Russell make it back to the zeppelin, Carl is forced to release his house, which slowly descends into the clouds, a loss which Carl accepts as being for the best.

Kevin is returned to her three chicks and Carl takes Russell and Dug home where Russell attends his senior explorer ceremony. When Russell's father fails to present him with his final badge, Carl fulfils the role and gives Russell a grape soda badge that Ellie gave him when they first met, calling it the Ellie badge. Afterwards, they sit on a curb together in front of an ice cream shop, Carl acting as a surrogate grandfather to Russell, The Spirit of Adventure anchored above them.

At Paradise Falls, Carl and Ellie's house has landed right at the spot where it was meant to be: on the cliff overlooking the falls.

I was pleased with the feedback I received due to the essay being structured correctly and reading well. I was told to properly cite my essay with Harvard reference which was something I was going to do upon the essays completion and to remove/ expand on a particular paragraph of my essay as it was journalistic.

I Aiden King am told that I resemble Denzel Washington and last month I had a psychic reading to see if I was him in a past lifetime as I do believe in past lives just that a spirit/soul has free will in their decision to reincarnate back on earth, stay in the non physical realms, andor continue their spiritual progress in other galaxies/planets/worlds. A psychic to many government and military leaders both within the U.S. and Europe explained that no I was not Denzel Washington in my most recent earth past live, more or less that I am a descendant of a male university cook later promoted to a civilian manager cook on a military base on either the western andor eastern coast within the U.S. who was a fan of Denzel Washington and through the law of attraction I was eventually born. This descendant is apparently one of my 33 celestial spirit guides who guide me from various heaven based realms.
