You leave me alone for 3 days with complete freedom and independence and i will jump back into my greek mythology phase.
Ok no srsly during quarentine and the height of my art journey where i used to draw every waking moment, my muse was Patroclus . (Bc i am a greek-roman mythology nerd since the tender age of THREE). I LITERALLY COULD NOT STOP DRAWING THIS SON OF A BITCH.
What im trying to say is, new art is about to drop sometimes tonight.

Why Originality in Writing Isn't Always Possible
I was writing for years before I encountered a problem with writing as a whole—that most ideas have already been published.
When someone first told me that though, they said it like, "You'll never think of something that hasn't already been written."
The phrasing makes it sound like all story ideas are a waste of your time. I began spiraling. I researched every short story I'd ever written. I looked up books similar or identical to other books I loved.
Turns out, that person was right.
Sort of.
New Ideas Are Old News
Think about how long humanity has existed. Think about the many experiences that generations have shared—love, loss, happiness, adventure, self-growth, your coming-of-age years.
Story ideas inspired by whatever you go through in life have likely already been lived or thought of, given the trillions of people who have walked this planet and interacted with each other.
BUT
Originality Doesn't Only Come From Ideas
This is what I wish someone had told me back when I was spiraling.
I'll say it again for those in the back—
Originality Doesn't Only Come From Ideas
It also comes from your voice and your perspective!
Voice can feel tricky to grasp when you're starting out as a writer. Everyone can throw a few words on a page. How do you know what your voice sounds like and if readers will respond well to it?
Imagine two friends going on a trip. They do everything together. They sit on the beach, they eat lunch at a restaurant, and watch a movie before heading home. Then they each journal about their day in notebooks.
Those entries would look nothing alike! One friend might relax on the beach and feel so at peace that they take a nap, while another gets sunburned easily and hides under their umbrella with a scowl. Both ultimately enjoyed their day for different reasons. The beach lover got time by the ocean and the other friend who liked the beach much less fell in love with a new dish at the restaurant because they're a foodie.
You'll also frame your stories differently than any other writer. Like accents change the way every person speaks out loud, writers structure sentences and describe things/events/emotions very differently.
These may seem like insignificant details that set stories apart, but they make all the difference.
Think about Homer’s Odyssey. Circe is a minor character in the long tale and basically gets about a minute of the reader's time before Odysseus moves on to the next phase of his journey home. In Madeline Miller's Circe, the goddess becomes the main character and the ultimate portrayal of fear, rage, hurt and healing that are universally experienced but are especially true to the female experience.
Both stories follow the same timeline, so readers don't pick them up to necessarily get surprised by something Brand New to Literature™. Instead, they read direct retellings to learn from the characters in new ways, live momentarily through someone else's eyes, and bond over another aspect of the human experience.
Circe is an incredible work of art. Your idea—whether it's a direct retelling, indirect retelling, or full of literary devices from previous works—can be incredible too.
How Do You Know Which Ideas Are Worth Writing?
If a story idea doesn't immediately make you jump for your computer or a pen/paper, is it worth writing? My best advice is to sit with it.
Some of my best work has come from stories that got to marinate. I put them in the back of my mind and thought about the characters or themes or plot when something sparked another idea. By the time I started typing, the story was more vivid than when I first though of it.
But also, I have probably twenty failed ideas for every story I've written.
Give yourself time to get to know your ideas. If they're worth your time, they'll sit with you too.

KIERAN'S GAY FAGGOT BOOK REC OF THE DAY !!!
are you or someone you love a boykissing little gay faggot who had a percy jackson or general greek mythology phase when you were 16 that you're either still in or never truly grew out of? if yes, you're probably autistic. but you may also eat this* gay faggot book right up.
that's right, it's the song of achilles by madeline miller. now I know this book isn't necessarily obscure or a hidden gem, but nonetheless it is by far my favorite gay faggot book and one of my favorite books of all time in general.
first of all, elephant in the room, patrochilles. literally the best couple of all time. you agree. their love is so pure that it will tug on your heartstrings and so tragic that it will rip them right out. not to mention, in this special little book, their romance isn't really a romance type of deal- it's up to interpretation and people will either agree or look at it a different way, but I personally see their dynamic as queer platonic. even if you don't, it's still undeniable that their dynamic is not the traditional idea of romance, so for all you aromantic people like me out there, you've got some half decent representation. not to mention they're gay.
second, the writing itself. it is SO gorgeous. it's the type of book you can sit in the grass with a cup of herbal dandelion tea with and read for hours and hours on end without getting bored because it's just so so pretty and nice to read. if you read the reviews you'll most probably come across many people who said it's made them cry, and I don't cry at very much but at the end of this book I was definitely wiping my eyes. holy shit.
third, you don't even need to know a whole lot about greek myth to read and enjoy it. it's very accessible in that sense. so for greek mythology fans, it might make you gay. for gay people, it might turn you into a greek mythology fan, and if you're gay and a greek mythology fan, you should dm me. slash jay slash serious.
fourth, it's a coming-of-age story. if you know me at all you know I eat coming of age stories right the fuck UP, but you might not, and in that case, ignore this fourth point. but for me, to watch patroclus be born, grow up and spend his life by achilles' side, and die for achilles' hubris, is an insane and gut-wrenching experience that I and like minded gay faggots will never get over.
also, fifth but slightly off topic note, it's about achilles, which is where the term "achillean" comes from. which is awesome. and in the fancy pretty little box in my pinned, you'll notice there's a nice quote in there, which is also from this book. which is so #aesthetic and cool. to me.
this has been kieran's gay faggot book rec of the day. join me next time I feel like it for another gay faggot book rec.
*when I read this book, it was available for free to borrow on internet archive, but when I went to link it here it turns out it isn't available on there anymore. which is sad.

Books I read in 2022
I cannot possibly remember every book, so I'm missing some, but looking at my bookshelves this is what I was able to come up with.
This year: almost no non-fiction, almost all new books. During the early phase of the pandemic I got super into manga, which cut into my prose reading time, so there are fewer books here than in previous years.
The best ones
Circe - I got it for Christmas last year and I read it in about 2 days because I could not put it down. Beautiful writing, excellent restaging of The Odyssey, everything I ever wanted 10/10
The Song of Achilles - After finishing Circe I bought this at Shakespeare and Company when I was in Paris and it actually distracted me from my trip a little bit because again, could not put it down. Madeline Miller owns my soul. Circe was better though.
The Locked Tomb - maybe the only time I have ever gone back and re-read the entire series before a book came out instead of just telling myself I would re-read the entire series before the new one came out and then forgetting to and being too impatient to not read the new book straight away. It was really a blast reading all The Locked Tomb back-to-back and I had a great time with Nona The Ninth as a result. All in all probably my best reading experience this year, actually.
I'm Glad My Mom Died - I read the Jeanette McCurdy book mostly on the plane to go spend Christmas with my family, which was a choice. It is not at first what you expect from the title. It's smarter than that. This book is really exceedingly cleverly written in such a way to suck you in and get you having a good time despite how daaaaaaaaark it is in there. Re the abusive mom and child actor tell-all: as bad as you think this will be, it's actually worse. But the pov is so well done and in such a way that you really grok that this girl does not understand how fucked up things are, while making absolutely sure that you as the reader understand exactly how fucked up things are. That is not an easy balance to do well and she makes it look easy. I hope this girl's life is uneventful ever after and that she writes more books, I think she could be a fabulous writer.
Everything else
(Everything I list here I enjoyed at least enough to finish. If I'm not enjoying something I won't get very far into it, and I'm not counting those here. I'm also about partway into 6-8 more books, but those will count for 2023)
The Circle - Dave Eggers Where the Drowned Girls Go - Seanan Maguire Klara and the Sun - Kazuo Ishiguro Finna - Nino Cipri Hallucinations - Oliver Sacks Miyazakiworld - Susan Napier Remote Control - Nnedi Okorator Cloud Cuckooland - Anthony Doerr Last Exit to Brooklyn - Hubert Selby Jr Seasonal Fears - Seanan Maguire What Makes This Book So Great - Jo Walton The Past is Red - Catherynne M. Valente A Prayer for the Crown-Shy -- Becky Chambers Fugitive Telemetry (A Murderbot Book) - Martha Wells Revenant Gun - Yoon Ha Lee The Ten Thousand Doors of January - Alix Harrow Black Sun - Rebecca Roanhorse It Came From the Closet - Various (queer horror analysis anthology) Empire of Gold - S.A. Chakraborty
Graphic novels and manga are another post bye

hiyaaa! i got tagged by the lovely @sidekick-hero & @legitcookie but tbh i have no idea who has already been tagged in these things because i’ve been out the tumblr loop for the last few days so bear with me here
Nickname: alice (dating all the way back to my twilight phase bc alice was my favorite character and i definitely related to her so it just... stuck. for like over a decade now)
Height: 1.69m (which is like.. a little more than 5′6? idk that shit confuses me)
Last thing I googled: how to convert cm into feet for the question above lol
Song stuck in my head: Ik wil dansen - Froukje
# followers: 258 at the moment
Amount of sleep: i kinda need like 8-9 hours of sleep but i usually only get about 7
Dream job: something where i can put my criminology degree to good use (current job is definitely a way to get there!)
Wearing: pyjamas and a bathrobe
Book/movie that summarizes you: i’m gonna sound like a broken record but probably Legally Blonde because that movie is an integral part of my dna and always there when i need it the most
Fav song: so many options damn but ivy by taylor swift always has a special place in my heart tbh.
Aesthetic: oooh i always love anything academia related as well as the 80s aesthetic (i hate it that my parents have thrown away their clothes from that period because i just know i would rock my dad’s colorful pullovers and my mom’s polos)
Fav authors: i love anything madeline miller puts out as well as casey mcquiston!
Random fact: did you know that ritter sport is the only brand that can make square chocolate bars? they have patented this and no other chocolate brand can make them because it’s such an integral part of the ritter sport chocolate bar. (it’s one of my favorite fun facts to sprout at parties, so here you go!)
not sure who to tag here because y’all probably did this one while i was gone, but if you read this, please see it as an invitation to answer these because i’m very curious to all of your answers!

May and June wrap up
(Yes I'm late)
If we were villains by M.L Rio
I still don't know how to rate this book and I'll probably need a second read to do it properly. One thing is certain: I really really liked it. It's this book's fault if I reentered my 'I'm fixated on Shakespeare' phase. Now I want to read every play that is named in this book so that I can reread it and fully understand it. It's so full of subtle details argggg I love these things.
The midnight club by Christopher Pike
🌟🌟/5
This book was a disappointment, it is so ugly. I got interested in it because I watched the tv series on netflix and I adored it (I really recommend it) but mr netflix cancelled the second season and I wanted to know more about these characters, so I picked the book up. The midnight club didn't age well, while you read it you feel it's old. The characters are unlikeble and you can really tell they are written by a man, they show no depth.
Haikyuu 1 and 2
🌟🌟🌟🌟/5
I love this manga, I don't have anything to say, read it please. The characters are chef kiss.
Once upon a broken heart by Stephanie Garber
🌟🌟🌟.5/5
I was a bit disappointed by this book, don't get me wrong, I liked it but I expected more from it. I couldn't empathise with Evangeline and Jacks the way I always do with good characters. They have a great potential as characters, especially Jacks, but Stephanie Garber didn't really exploit this potential in this first book. I'll definitely read the second one.
All that's left in the world by Erik J. Brown
🌟🌟🌟🌟/5
This is the post-apocalyptic queer novel you didn't know you needed, but believe me, you do. Read this, fall in love with the characters, fall in love with the way the relationship between Andrew and Jamie develops without hurry. This is found family first and a love story second
Legendborn and Bloodmarked by Tracy Deonn
🌟🌟🌟🌟/5
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟/5
Words cannot describe how much I love and I'm obsessed with these books. Bree is a wonderful protagonist, she is human, she has flaws, she isn't perfect, she felt real to me. I also think the other characters were wonderful, Sel (my fav together with Bree), William, Alice, Nick. I loved them all. One thing I didn't like about the first book was the development of the relationship between Bree and Nick, it was too hurried and it did get on my nerves. I liked the second book better than the first one, also the ending was *chef kiss* I adored Tracy for that. Please pick these two up, I can't wait to read the third one.
Red, white & Royal Blue by Casey Mcquiston
🌟🌟🌟.5/5
Mmmmm it was like reading a romcom movie, cute, it made me giggle and laugh but I skimmed most of it cause I found some parts boring and a bit too cheesy. However, it was a great book, I'm excited for the movie.
The song of Achilles by Madeline Miller
I don't know how to rate this one sorry
Fucking yes I loved it. I adore greek mythology and I knew I would liked this book. Patroclus my baby, he really is the best of the Myrmidons. Sadly the ending felt a bit subdued compared to the rest of the book.

Tag 10 people you want to know more about
I was tagged by @kemvee and also by @peggy-sue-reads-a-book a little while ago in something similar-- thank you both! It's been a while since I've done one of those so this was fun 😁 There's been a bunch of new people following me recently and I'd love to know more about all of you, so if you're reading this feel free to grab a tag!! I'm also going to tag some of my existing friendos because I love poking ya: @in-arlathan @inquisitoracorn @aymayzing @tevivinter @elveny @hexcore-juggler @juliafied @zuendwinkel @tessa1972 @rakshadow
Favourite colour: I've always loved blue, and I go through phases where I'm obsessed with a different shade (right now it's pastel blue)
Favourite food: umm I don't think I have one? I just love food, any food, ALL THE FOOD
Song stuck in your head: "Oh No" by Biig Piig
Last thing you googled: literally "how to find your search history" because I'm on my phone and it's impossible to see it for some reason 😂but it was probably about song lyrics
Time: 15:48
Dream Trip: Japan
Last book you read: just finished The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy, currently reading Gates of Fire by Steven Pressfield
Last book you enjoyed reading: I actually ended up liking The God of Small Things even though I wasn't sure about it at first. Before that, I read The Charioteer by Mary Renault and it's SO GOOD, it's so so good I highly recommend. And Gates of Fire is amazing so far!!
Last book you hated reading: I had to go through my Goodreads account because it's been a long while since I read a book I disliked. It was Homeland by R.A. Salvatore which was.... bad. Oh my god it was so bad 😂 I'd read some books of his in the past which were meh, okay, but because I love the Forgotten Realms and specifically the drow elves and their culture I decided to give it a go but I couldn't finish it. I think I read maybe the first third before I gave up, which says a lot because I almost never leave books unfinished even when I don't like them.
Favourite thing to cook/bake: I love Korean and Vietnamese food, so I always have a blast trying new recipes and ingredients. I am absolutely useless at baking though, I'm so bad at keeping time and I always end up burning things LOL. It's a running joke in my family how forgetful and easily distracted I am
Favourite craft to do in your spare time: I usually spend most of my spare time writing so that's pretty much it 😅 Oh and I can also crochet but only basic things, I'm still very much a beginner
Most niche dislike: When people complain about Madeline Miller's version of pacifist Patroclus. That really rubs me the wrong way, for so many reasons. I actually started typing up some of those reasons, but then I crossed into rant territory and I deleted it. So suffice it to say that although I can sometimes see where those TSOA-critical opinions are coming from, I do not share them.
Opinion on circuses now and in history: This is... something I've thought so little about? I don't really have an opinion. I've never been to a circus, or even watched any circus performances on TV. As long as animals aren't being used or abused for circus performances, I'm good, I think?
Do you have a sense of direction and if not what is the worst way you ever got lost: I have a weirdly remarkable sense of direction, I never get lost even when I'm in a new place/country and I don't speak the language. I'm always the one in charge of planning routes and giving directions, so yeah no funny stories about getting lost unfortunately lol.

Hey anon! :)
74. Favorite Candy
I go through phases with candy. Currently I would say BubbleYum original flavor gum.
78. Are you religious? Does God exist?
This is funny timing, I was just asked this second question by my partner yesterday because she's going through some unfortunate grief and it was a good chat.
❗️❗️Red alert❗️❗️ Get ready for a tangent, you asked for it!! TL;DR below.
I am not religious. I grew up in mormonism and it was pushed HARD on me but it never clicked or felt real. In my head I was like, 'These adults love telling stories and they're interesting I guess!' but I was skeptical from the beginning. Why does God talk to Moses (or whoever lol) through a bush on fire?? Why did God let Joseph Smith marry and rape all those young teens? They would say in Young Women's class that it was because there werent enough men due to pioneering deaths but even then it never made sense to me.. and dude the temple underwear and the rituals they did in there that even now are creepy!! Homophobia and racism galore 🤢
In regards to God, I do not believe there is one. I also don't think there are truly souls. 🤷‍♂️ Humans like to think they're different than anything else on this planet and that they have a higher purpose but I think that's the ego talking and the fear that there is no meaning.
We are the same level as everything here, basic mammals and when we die we are at peace and are eventually recycled through the earth and those decomposing particles go through the next life cycle. Kind of like reincarnation but not if you catch my drift?? We're all star dust and particles that were made out of chance. I think there are definitely other planets beyond ours with similar levels of life too. 👽
I do think the closest thing to soul is what you do for one another. Example, my grandma and I sat on the porch every other evening when I was a child and we didn't speak much but her presence and gentle showing of affections were very memorable to me and I want to show love like that to people around me now ❤️. I also love porch swings lol. These memories and mannerisms live on through to our decendents and because of that they are in a way 'with' us. Unfortunately it can go the other way as well (PTSD poster child here lmao) and there have been studies on the ripple effects of generational trauma.
TD;DR: I believe in science. Yes I'm fun to have at parties lol 😆
93. What colors are the walls in your room?
Unfortunately white 😕... Renting liiiife! *shakes fist*
95. Share your favorite quote?
"I stepped into those woods and my life began." - Circe by Madeline Miller
97. Do you like horror movies? 🔪
Hmm I do! But I don't really look out for them, they come to me through 'connections' AKA friends lol. I was more into them as a teen.

no one tagged me but I wanna do it anyway el oh el
~~~
3 Ships
Canon: Reylo. Obv. Flynn and Rapunzel (idk the name), Shules. Whatever Olive and Adam’s is in TLH. I love them all!
OC Ship: I don’t mess around with ocs a lot but I have a few ocs I’ve created over the years for different fan fiction projects and by far my favorite has to be Elara Windsor and though he’s not my oc, Remus Lupin. I wish I would’ve finished that fic.
Ship of the week: Shules for sure. Been heavy on Psych lately and I can’t get enough of their dorky selves and their slow burn.
1st Ship when I was younger I went through a very intense Harry Potter phase which got me into the shipping world(?) and I was big on Harmione! Not so much anymore.
Last song Zombie - The Cranberries (I was proving a point to my sister 💀)
Current Reading Circe — Madeline Miller though im getting through it very slow because exams are beating me to a pulp
Last Film probably Tangled. It’s been a while since I watched a movie.
Craving some pineapple or some peanut butter banana toast on wheat bread sounds fire
~~~
im too scared to tag people but do this if you want!!!!
