The Wolfe at the Door
The Wolfe at the Door by Gene Wolfe
i don't even know how to begin to review the experience i had reading this collection, except to say that i had a GREAT time!! Gene Wolfe has been on my radar, but i hadn't yet picked up any of the novels he's famous for. i definitely will now! this collection was a JOURNEY, so varied in almost every way, except that each piece had this particular sparkle of style that tied them all together.
my favorite stories ranged from mystery/thriller/drama in space mausoleums to time-bending Arthuriana to a sorrowful Lucifer on Easter Sunday, by way of baseball played with speedboats and a matchmaking smart fridge from the future. every single story feels impossible to describe--i tried, and the friend i was texting could only keep replying "that sounds wild!"--and yet each one is compelling, surprising, and a little mischievous. Wolfe combines the "highbrow" and the "lowbrow" (for what those terms are worth) in ways that create a fun, often funny tension, like eating caviar with pop rocks mixed in. i hope this is typical of his style, because i will definitely be bumping him up in my TBR priority list.
the deets
how i read it: an e-galley from NetGalley, this time one that someone at Tor actually emailed me (and probably lots of other people) to push it to? have i become slightly marginally cool? senpai noticed me??
try this if you: appreciate little bites of stories, love to be surprised, want Thoughts to be Provoked, or are charmed by the best kinds of what i personally think of as "dad fiction" (no offense to my dad, who has fun taste in fiction from before i was old enough to read it)
some lines i really liked: it was so hard to choose, this book is a CHONKER
The sympathy in Alexis' face looked tough and a little wilted, like cabbage pulled from a dumpster.
---
He extracted a package from his coat pocket and produced a flask containing a fine gray powder whose composition would have shocked the average hyena.
---
Viviane turned to the small woman with wings. "Please--my gosh, I still don't know your name. When I was little I read books about fairies. Now I can't remember them. Wait. Nimue's one. Do you like it?"
"That is you, I believe." The small woman giggled.
"No, I'm Viviane."

Ok but with ylfa's backstory it's just. There's a wolf who can take people's skins and mimic their voices? So there have been many ppl who have gone into the woods, been attacked by a wolf, and then what's returned has looked and sounded and hell maybe even acted like them! But a bit more monstrous. With hair on their hands, and a low snarl, and sure they sound like our dear loved one and they look like them but they're scary. They're scary, and they've changed, and shouldn't they be dead?
And maybe if they're scary they aren't our loved one - they're actually just the scary thing in disguise yes of course! Cause they would never scare us like that. They could never be transformed like that. So it's not them, so they're dead.

Sketches from an AU I'm writing for: Ghost is a Shapeshifter and can turn into a dog.
This isn't actually part of what I'm writing (yet) I just needed GhostDog in a tacvest. It was important.
(if you'd like snippets of the thing feel free to ask, I have at least 3-5k completed)
