Petra, Jordan

Al-Khazneh, one of the ancient temples in Petra, Jordan, in Arabic translates to 'The Treasury'. For ages, Petra was hidden from the world, with only the Bedouin people aware of it because they lived in the surrounding desert. The Treasury was carved out of a single sandstone rock approximately 2,000 years ago by the Nabatean people, the original inhabitants of Petra. They were skilled architects who constructed an impressive network of cisterns, water channels and other amenities. Al-Khazneh is the epitome of Nabatean architecture, standing over 40 metres tall and boasting a mesmerisingly beautiful doorway with two towering columns and carvings that represent mythological creatures like sphinxes. It is believed that Nabatean King Aretas IV was laid to rest here.

Little Petra and the hike to Petra

We left the Bedouin camp and walked to Little Petra where we got our tickets and took a quick look around Little Petra. Like Petra there's a narrow slot in the stone wall that's the entrance to the site.

Inside the tombs, residences, etc. are all carved into the stone walls.

There were also stairs carved into the walls, but I have no idea where they were going.

The stone both here and in Petra the stone tends to have natural holes that people carved out larger.

After a brief walk around Little Petra, we headed out to walk to Petra itself.

There were a lot of stairs going both up and down along the way. But we ended up in front of the Monastery, the largest and highest tomb in Petra.

From there it was down, down down. Most people come from the other end of the town and have to hike up these long stairs to get there. Most of them have no idea how far up it is. As we approached the bottom we could hear people talking about "all the stairs."

The guys delivering stuff to shops use donkeys in the same space as the pedestrians. The donkeys are not very well under control. I saw one coming up with a large gas bottle on each side. A middle age couple also coming up the stairs didn't hear it coming and the gas bottle on the right side just bowled the woman over, into her husband who almost went over the side.

When we finally reached the bottom of the stairs we were in the middle of Petra. We met our local guide for the rest of the day and went to have lunch. We'd brought sack lunches and we just wanted a shady place to sit. Those were hard to find, so the guide said he knew a good place 200 meters farther. It was more like a kilometer., but it was available.

The guide talked very quickly, more quickly than he could actually pronounce the words, so was very hard to understand. I had done a lot of reading in advance, so didn't get much out of him. But most people in the group had done no advanced reading.

We headed for the other famous tomb, The Treasury. It was a zoo in front of it. Huge crowds of people, many in large groups with camels in between and horsemen rushing through.

One interesting thing to me was the clear evidence that the ground level it greatly raised from the original. In the front of The Treasury, there are grates over the excavation of the actual ground level.

Then we headed out to town and our hotel. But the entrance there is down a long slot canyon.

It's almost a kilometer through the canyon and another one to the entrance of the preserve.

In the end it was a 21 km day with 534 meters of climb. When you add in the standing around it was a long day.

you know while we're doing all this beautiful meta writing about perc'ahlia because of lovm s2 - and this is not intended to disparage them btw this makes me like them even more - i would just like to remind everyone that in addition to having some of the genuinely best and most romantic moments on this show, they're also the couple that pined for ages and only had the courage to say something to each other about it after one of them died, upon which they:

got together near immediately

broke up a few months later

got together again

had the equivalent of a vegas wedding literally because one of them dared the other and they both refused to back down

(taliesin and laura also didn't remember who made the dare and who said yes because they're both equally likely to do that)

didn't tell anyone they cared about that they got married bc it was too awkward to bring up so they just kept it a secret for months until a god made them say it

and then had a formal wedding a year later because what were they going to do, not throw a huge party and dress up fancy about it? come on.

Gladstone: Chief Mouser of the Treasury

Larry the Cat gets a ton of attention across the internet for his role as Chief Mouser at No. 10, but nobody knows about Gladstone which makes me super sad so i’m here to rectify that:

Gladstone is the Chief Mouser of Her Majesty’s Treasury in Whitehall, London. he was appointed in 2016 following Larry and Palmerston’s appointments as Chief Mousers of No. 10 and the Foreign Office respectively - and should get just as much as, if not more (as i personally believe), attention as them!

why, you say? well ohoho i’m glad you asked:

1) he’s better at his job than Larry

Larry is well-known for his “lack of killer instinct” and is notoriously bad at his job as Chief Mouser. the press calls him “Lazy Larry” due to his tendency to sleep on while mice run amok and in 2012 was almost fired from his position due to incompetency!

Gladstone, by comparison, is a natural mouser.

Gladstone’s catch count was last reported as 22, far higher than Larry’s (if not as high as Palmerston’s, i’ll admit). Gladstone made his first catch within 48 hours of arriving at the Treasury whereas it took Larry just under two months. Larry also had to have an assistant appointed, Freya, to help with mousing duties; Gladtsone catches all his mice himself, and has even moved onto flies, as can be seen above.

2) he’s fashionable as all hell

while all the cats of Whitehall are undoubtedly adorable, only one can hold the title for best dressed: Gladstone.

clearly, Larry and Palmerston have nothing on Gladstone. both have simple solid-coloured collars whereas Gladstone is leading the fashion revolution with every new bowtie he wears.

in fact, he’s started a trend with his bowties! when Evie and Ossie became the new Chief Mousers of the Cabinet Office in late 2016, they sported Gladstone’s iconic bowties. #styleicon

3) he’s a social media influencer

the last reason Gladstone should be just as much a household name as Larry and Palmerston is because his job isn’t only limited to mousing - he also uses his platforms to spread the message about his work:

Gladstone’s Twitter and Instagram is filled with constant updates as to what the Treasury is doing, and he often features in simple ‘5 things about ___’ videos that are cute as well as informative. he’s also seen frequently supporting global events like Pride yearly (hence the rainbow bowtie above).

4) in summary: he’s awesome

now that Palmerston has retired to lead a more chill life, and now that Larry looks to be on the horizon of replacing Boris Johnson as Prime Minister, perhaps it’s time to acknowledge how cool Gladstone is and pay him the respect and attention he deserves?
