In a region known for its ancient wonders and historical significance, there exists a natural marvel that defies conventional understanding – the Dead Sea.
This extraordinary body of water, nestled between the rugged landscapes of Jordan and the historical land of Israel, has captivated the human imagination for centuries.
What sets the Dead Sea apart are the truths that have been etched into its very essence through time:
A Saltwater Enigma: The Dead Sea holds the title of being the saltiest body of water on our planet. Its salinity is nearly ten times that of regular seawater, rendering it nearly uninhabitable for most aquatic life. This remarkable salinity is why it's called the "Dead" Sea, as few organisms can endure its extreme conditions.
A Bounty of Minerals: Beyond its salinity, the Dead Sea is enriched with a treasure trove of minerals, including magnesium, calcium, and potassium. These minerals have been coveted for centuries for their therapeutic and cosmetic benefits, drawing people from far and wide in search of their healing powers.
Nature's Remedial Spa: The Dead Sea has long been celebrated for its medicinal properties. Its mineral-laden mud and waters are believed to provide relief for various skin conditions, from psoriasis to eczema. Additionally, the unique atmospheric conditions surrounding the Dead Sea, characterized by low allergen levels and high oxygen, have been reported to positively impact respiratory ailments.
The Magic of Buoyancy: Thanks to its remarkable salt content, the Dead Sea offers an otherworldly swimming experience. Floating on its surface becomes effortless, a sensation that leaves you feeling weightless and buoyant, a feeling akin to no other.
A Tapestry of History: The Dead Sea region weaves together threads of ancient history. It's said to have offered refuge to the legendary King David and is believed to be the site of the biblical cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. This deep historical and geological significance adds layers of intrigue to its story.
The Shrinking Wonder: Yet, paradoxically, the Dead Sea is vanishing. Human activities, such as mineral extraction and the diversion of water from the Jordan River, its primary source of replenishment, have led to alarming drops in its water levels. Today, conservationists are working tirelessly to stabilize and protect this natural wonder before it's altered irreversibly.
The Dead Sea's enigmatic salinity, its healing embrace, and its ancient tales make it more than just a geographical wonder. It's a place of mystery and fascination, a testament to the intricate balance between human influence and the enduring power of nature.

[Image description. The mermaid Emily Windsnap floating in the Dead Sea, in a pool formed by salt crystals. End description.]
Last entry for #mermayacrosstheseas -- Emily Windsnap at the Dead Sea. After everything she's been through, Emily really does deserve a vacation. The Dead Sea is a popular vacation spot. I had lots of fun with this prompt challenge! It was creative and fun, and perfect to combine with my prior fanart. Also partly inspired by the upcoming Emily Windsnap movie. Enjoy!

Salt for Purification & Healing
Salt is used for a variety of things. For purification in witchcraft, flavoring & curing while cooking. For healing... & perhaps even for that little extra sting in the wound of thy enemy? ... perhaps?
Haven't we all thrown that little bit of extra salt in our hands, when cooking, over our shoulder for good luck? I sure have. Our world is full of superstition and in witchcraft, it is said, salt holds many magical properties offering protection, purification & healing.
So how does it work? It's believed salt is an absorber of energy. We sprinkle a little bit of salt on our written paper just before lighting it aflame. Purification just before the spell is cast. Salt is binding, joining & holding together a spell & it's connection to you. Salt is also used as protection against unwanted energies. It can often be placed in or outside the perimeter of a dwelling or mixed with sand in preparation for magic circles. It has the ability to be used to transmute & transfer psychic energies.
Salt is extremely healing. A regular salt bath can work wonders for inflammation, chronic pain & dry skin. I've used magnesium salt while taking baths & it has always been highly recommended by my chiropractor, who specializes in Myofascial Pain Syndrome, to take salt baths. I've been told by other therapeutic practitioners as well to have a swim in the ocean whenever possible. Lucky for me I live on the ocean, and when I do swim in any body of water that contains salt, I feel absolutely amazing afterwards.
Salt baths are known to be detoxifying, through osmosis, but also provide minerals such as magnesium, calcium, potassium, zinc, & iron, when there is deficiency.
The Dead Sea, the deepest hypersaline lake in the world, is 9.6 times saltier than the ocean and is the world's saltiest bodies of water, not to mention holy. Although The Dead Sea is currently dying, people travel from all over the world to have a float.
Next time you have some salt in your hand...throw some over your shoulder for good luck and stay salty!!

The Dead Sea
.
Never was there
a true moment
where
the Dead Sea,
it died—
but oh, still you cried.
.
You never knew
the chances I
blew.
The East wind
it changed:
it's at your back again.
.
You never thought
that your choices
sought
the Blue Moon,
its loon
and their calico tune.
.
I try to dry
your big salty
eyes
but the stars,
they can't
twinkle-twinkle that far.
.
I try allay
your old fears for
today…
Like Saturn,
it's rings,
you spin 'round me again.
.
Breaking the chain
if I don't go
insane
at sunset.
So, you
tell me what to regret.
.
You're so convinced
I'm made up of
chinz
and the Sky,
it's full
of American pie.
.
You want me to
choke on carbon
smoke...
Your clouds feel,
they say,
that I'm not even real.
.
Oh, such a shame
my poor, poor sweet
babe,
lightning peals
never twice.
No, I'm not even real.
.
So, the Dead Sea:
all it can
be.
And even though
life thrives,
it's only microbial.
.

platforming palestinian joy is just as important as sharing the suffering they're enduring during this genocide. despite continued displacement and bombardment, you cannot steal their joy and spirit. happy birthday to this sweet baby 🖤🇵🇸 may they grow up to see a free palestine
edit: @saffronlesbian made a video description for this post!!
[vd: a screen recording of a tweet from the 20th of April 2024 with 2.5 million views, from Ruhi @/ruhi_hi. the caption reads, "This video of this little Palestinian angel celebrating his bday in a refugee camp" followed by three emoji of a smiling face with teary eyes. the video clip is 11 seconds long and shows a one-year-old baby seated on the sandy ground, smiling hugely and clapping his hands while people sing to him from offscreen and a large cake is placed in front of him. stuck into the top of the cake is a decoration that reads "happy birthday" in english. the video has the tiktok handle @/ibrahim.jamal99 visible in it. /end vd.]

hey! for todays protest, i made this little zine about palestine (holding just simple and basic information).
you can download the zine here, fold it yourself, and distribute it around.
no credit is needed. feel free to leave it around bars, protests, or wherever. simply print it (borderless) and fold it. here is a tutorial on how to do it.
dont stay silent. there is a genocide of horrendous, atrocious proportions going on. also if you are a zionist here to argue with me, i dont plan to entertain you at all, not on my art blog. fuck off, you'll be swiftly blocked. i see enough of you clowns on my main and i have no energy for you. you can skip the death threats too bc i dont give a shit.
(i'm off to get ready for a surgery now, i just wanted to post it before this. if you need anything, i might take a bit to reply)
