I like imagining that Smithers used to date patty back in highschool before they both realised they're gay. It was the most awkward and uncomfortable experience for both of them

Imagine a Simpsons episode where it's revealed that Mr. Smithers and Patty once met in a gay bar and drunkenly signed a legally binding pact that if they were both single in X number of years they'll marry each other and then the whole episode is about everybody trying to find them dates because so long as they're technically not single on that particular date the contract doesn't count.
