i think instead of calling the tony awards the super bowl for gay people we should call the super bowl the tony awards for straight people. normalize liking theater and homosexuality

I’m so happy non-binary and gender non-comforming people are getting recognition for their amazing work!!!

…I’d be even happier if they didn’t have to be misgendered to receive said recognition but I guess Hollywood and Broadway are somehow less inclusive than the fucking DMV

Here’s to some real-life New Directions! In one of the earliest awards handed out in the 76th Tony Awards telecast on CBS and Paramount+, history was made as Alex Newell became the first-ever openly non-binary actor to win a Tony award, in the Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical category, for their showstopping role as cornpone character Lulu in the musical comedy “Shucked.”

Then, in the show’s final hour, that record was upheld by nonbinary actor J. Harrison Ghee, who won the Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical in the Marc Shaiman/Scott Wittman tuner “Some Like it Hot”, based on Billy Wilder’s classic 1950s comedy. Ghee, late of musicals such as “Kinky Boots” and “Mrs. Doubtfire”, was a favorite for their bold reimagining of the Jerry/Daphne role made famous by Jack Lemmon in the original film."

The amount of misogyny and sexism I have faced being a tiny 5’3” woman-presenting human in a field that is so technical and so physical like I regularly have to lift 50+ pound intelligent lighting fixtures over my head and hang them, or direct crews of men during a lighting focus, or choreograph a sword fight and…

I am a Master Electrician I am a Stage Manager I am a Lighting Designer I am a certified actor combatant with the SAFD and people take one look at me and believe I can’t do my job. But women and non-binary people in technical theatre we are smart, we are creative, we are competent, we are talented, we are incredible, we are STRONG, we CAN do these things and we deserve to be doing them!!!! Representation is so important I am watching the Tonys with tears in my eyes!!!!! 🥹😭
