Prediction for what will happen in BSD after Chapter 114.5 (SPOILERS BELOW)

HEAR ME OUT... because I'm pretty sure Verlaine is gonna debut, and I know what happens to Fukuchi. These things are related.

As someone who overanalyzed Asagiri's past LN Storm Bringer, I want to bring some things to attention in light of BSD chapter 114.5 which introduces a tripolar singularity

Singularities played a huge role in Storm Bringer.

They are what gave both Chuuya and Verlaine the near-indestructible abilities to channel and even be taken over by Arahabaki and Guivre. In essence, the two of them became singularities.

IMPORTANT excerpts from SB explaining singularities, and how they relate to Chuuya and Verlaine:

There's some more in there that I left out for brevity, including a reference to an ability to amplify one's own ability, but perhaps you see where I'm going with this...

In the official reference, Fukuchi's mysterious new form is given the title 神人 (shinjin), meaning "a divine or godly person," consisting of the kanji for "god" and "man."

Both Arahabaki and the demonic beast Guivre are referred to as gods. They take control of Chuuya and Verlaine and mass destruction ensues. I believe this is what will happen with Fukuchi as "shinjin."

Where will the "god" in question come from? His sword, Ame-no-gozen.

Whatever god is dwelling in there may be Fukuchi's Arahabaki/Guivre equivalent, or perhaps it's all three of the components because:

Fukuchi, Ame no gozen, and the Holy Sword Soluz Levni each contain a consciousness that is absorbed into the tripolar singularity, represented by the 3-part symbol on Fukuchi's new form

The "holy cross sword" was made from someone unknown, which I suspect will be relevant later, as they will also be absorbed into the singularity... Note similar design elements on Fukuchi's new form (blade-like legs, torn cloth, circular symbol with spikes in it)

Regardless, I'm certain the SB parallels are no coincidence.

This happens once every blue moon!

I think this also means we'll get to see Verlaine finally appear. By god this has been a "storm" if there ever was one, and the contents of SB will only get more and more relevant. Don't forget that Agatha Christie was teased and we know Verlaine assassinated members of her Order of the Clock Tower.

TL;DR, Fukuchi's singularity makes him like Chuuya and Verlaine, that's why he's not himself and is going to wreak havoc, and also why I think Verlaine will finally show up in the main plot

As for what can stop him, we'll have to look back to SB, but I'm taking a break before I take up that task

Stop saying that Reo refers to his dynamic with Nagi as just a business partner, that's not factually true

Or well, it's out of context and only partially true

I keep seeing this argument brought up in nagireo meta as a way to bring ammo to the interpretation that Reo sees their dynamic as transactional while Nagi cares for him as a person, using the Barou scene as a frame of reference, but. As someone who read the whole manga in japanese, fun fact! There's another time where their relationship is brought up with a descriptor before that scene, and it's in fact Reo who refers to Nagi as his partner first. Not a business partner, just a partner. Someone you spend time with.

To be precise, the word he uses is 相棒 ("aibou"), which, second fun fact, is the same word Bachira used to describe his relationship with Isagi (in the scene where he says "I love you, partner". Just stressing that cause I find it amusing lol). In Bachira's case, this word was officially translated as "buddy". It basically means partner/companion/comrade. As you can see, there's no exploitative subtext, unless you're willing to read that into Bachira's line as well.

This scene was in chapter one of episode Nagi, so it's Reo who sets the tone of their buddying relationship. Nagi just follows.

When Barou accuses him of being a mindless slave that only follows Reo's orders then, Nagi's prompt response is to call himself "Reo's partner, not a slave", using the word 相方 ("aikata") this time. As you might have noticed, it's almost the same word! Same first kanji, almost no differences in nuance as far as the meaning goes. This one too means partner, companion.

So, where does the confusion come from? Well, the thing is, Reo does call Nagi his business partner, too! A whole total of once, and it made more sense in context. The reason why this got more attention than the line in chapter one, I believe, is because Reo says it shortly after Nagi candidly called him his aikata, so it jumps out more and makes Reo sound so much colder than he is.

But again, context!

Given how Reo's the first to put a friendly label on their relationship, clearly the intent here is not to tell us he secretly only sees Nagi as an asset whose potential he's investing in. More like, this line was in response to this,

Nagi's ego rearing its head at long last, and him taking the initiative in a play for the first time. Here he calls him his business partner because Nagi's finally rising to meet him as an equal, instead of simply trudging along because of Reo's pushing. It's Nagi who requests an assist, and Reo enthusiastically provides it, and remarks upon it with this term. But, and please note, in all the three different occurrences, no matter the word in kanji, the furigana always spells out "partner", cause that's what's the focus

So please stop saying that Reo doesn't give the same weight to their friendship as Nagi does, that's just untrue. They both obviously care about each other, and their actions show it better than their words, tbh.

I guess one might still overanalyse the fact that they don't use the same exact term for partner, and wonder what the difference is, as one (me) does. This is what I found (with a japanese source for more accuracy):

「相棒」と「相方」の違いとしては、「相棒」には「ひとつの目的を達成するために共に助け合う相手」といったニュアンスがあり、「相方」には「人柄や性格を理解し合いながら、苦楽を共にする相手」といったニュアンスがあります。

Inputting this into a machine translator cause it's 1am and I don't have the brainpower to translate it myself:

The difference between "buddy" and "partner" is that "buddy" (=aibou) has the nuance of "a partner who helps each other to achieve a goal," while "partner"(=aikata) has the nuance of "a partner who understands each other's personality and character and shares hardships and joys.

Which I feel is a much better distinction that makes a lot more sense with their respective motivators/feelings. Reo sees Nagi as the person at whose side he'll be able to win the world cup, thus it makes a lot of sense for him to use aibou. Nagi gave him the confidence to think himself world class despite his father's scorn. He's his partner in crime, so to speak. While Nagi sees Reo as the first person who saw past his weirdness, understood him better than most, and as the companion he can always circle back to and tell him about the joys and hassles hardships he went through

Amidst sprawling fields of beautiful flowers, Ibaraki also hosts Tsukuba Science City, Japan's premier research center and the home of Japan's space agency and numerous museums. Ibaraki is known historically for being the home of the Mito branch of the Tokugawa clan during the Edo Period and has long been associated with notable events in Japanese history. The first Nuclear Energy Research Institute was founded here in 1956. You can see space exhibits, actual space craft, and simulations at Tsukuba Space Center.

Outside of the major cities there are many natural areas to explore in the Suigo-Tsukuba Quasi-national Park. Hitachi Seaside Park is famous in the spring for its carpets of blooming blue nemophila. Kairaku-en is one of the Three Great Gardens of Japan. Mt. Tsukuba is a famous night view spot with a view of the Kanto Plain, including Tokyo Tower and the Tokyo Sky Tree, with a ropeway for convenient access. Ibaraki is also a major producer of natto.

Fukuroda Falls (Fukuroda no Taki) - 袋田の滝

One of the three most beautiful waterfalls in Japan, Fukuroda Falls is a 120-meter tall cascading waterfall in northwestern Ibaraki Prefecture in the remote hills of the town of Daigo. It is also on the registered list of the Top 100 Waterfalls of Japan (determined by the Ministry of Environment). These falls are also called the Yodo Falls (Yodo no Taki) because the water stream falls on four large rock faces. It is also said that the renowned monk Saigyo Hoshi greatly praised the falls by saying that you should view the different beauty of the falls in all four (yo) seasons.

They are particularly attractive in early November with the peak autumn foliage as well as peak water flow. There are several different views of the waterfall, and you cannot view it in its entirety all at the same time. Within the Fukuroda Waterfall complex there are neon tunnels and elevators to take you to different levels and viewing platforms. It is said that you will be successful in love if you find a heart in the waterfall. There are also numerous hot springs nearby.

Monkfish Hot Pot - あんこう鍋

The monkfish (also referred to as angler fish, goosefish, depending on the source I found) is a prized delicacy of Ibaraki and is best eaten fresh. Because these fish are too soft and slimy to cut up on a chopping board, they are prepared using the traditional tsurushi-giri technique, which involves cutting up the fish while suspended from a hook. In Japan, almost all parts of the monkfish are eaten, including fins, skin, gills, liver, stomach, ovaries and flesh—referred to as the “seven tools of the monkfish” in Japanese. The steamed liver is called ankimo and is considered a delicacy that may be eaten alone, or added to the hotpot soup for extra flavor. Anko nabe (monkfish hot pot) is a seasonal favorite consisting of monkfish, vegetables, and flavored broth.

I wanted to introduce another Kanji, because I believe it is very effective in learning countries and how to say a nationality together.

人

meaning: person pronounced: ひと (hi-to) kanji breakdown/usage: this kanji is a person indicator, the pronunciation changes depending on context. for the sake of this post, I will only talk about it's "じん" (Jin) usage.

When referring to a person from a country you can say "country name [either in kanji or Katakana] + 人" and that it! You can say your nationality :)

Example:

インド人 - Indian (Indo-jin)

日本人 - Japanese (Nihon-jin)

カンボジア人 - Cambodian (Canbojiya-jin)

Basic sentence from this: I am Indian -> 私はインド人です！[watashi wa indojin desu] - Although people general would just say インド人です (indojin desu) or 私はインド人 (watashi wa indojin)

If you're up for it, could you please give a translation analysis on the entire Princess Kenny theme song? Deliberate incomprehensibility is a fascinating art form

I can try! Disclaimer, Japanese is not my first language nor am I close to fluent in it… but I have been studying it for about 7 years and I live in Japan so 頑張ります😅

かわいいね女の子 (kawaii ne onna no ko)

The word order is a little funky (if this was a real sentence, the ね would be at the end) but this basically translates to “She’s a cute girl, isn’t she?” The ね is where the “isn’t she?” comes from, since it indicates that the singer expects the listener to agree. If you wanted to go literally based on word order though I’d personally translate it as “She’s cute, isn’t she? The girl” but that’s weird so I think the first one is better.

彼氏のいか大きい (kareshi no ika ōkii)

This line makes me very confused. 彼氏 is probably “boyfriend”, the の is how you denote possession making it “[my] boyfriend’s” and then 大きい means “big” so it’s “my boyfriend’s [??] is big”. But I cannot for the life of me figure out what いか is meant to be. The very first thing that comes to mind is “squid” but that doesn’t make much sense… unfortunately I don’t know the kanji which makes this even harder. The lyrics on the fandom wikia page translate it to “butt” but unless it’s slang I don’t know, I think that’s not right at all. 日本語のペラペラの人は手伝ってください🙇

あたしのホバクラーフト or you die、きある (atashi no hobakurafuto [or you die], kiaru)

あたし is an “I” pronoun like 私(watashi) or 僕(boku) but it’s the predominately feminine way of referring to oneself’s so it establishes that the singer is a woman. The の is, as previously mentioned, possessive so あたしのホバクラーフト is “My hovercraft”. The English part is, well, English so no need to translate. The last bit though is interesting bc uhhhh afaik きある doesn’t mean anything. Since most people translate that bit as “choose”, it’s probably supposed to actually be きめる which does mean “choose”. However it’s not in imperative/command form so it’s not telling the listen to choose, rather it’s saying someone chooses/will choose.

今火曜日です (ima kayoubi desu)

This one is pretty straightforward. It’s just saying “Now it’s Tuesday”. The one funny thing though is that this is in standard politeness form (since it has です at the end) when the rest of the song has been in casual/short form.

プリンセスケニー殺す (purinsesu kenii korosu)

殺す means “kill” so this is either “Princess Kenny kills” or “I kill Princess Kenny”. Considering it’s Kenny, it’s probably the latter. I’ve often seen this translated as “I killed Princess Kenny” but 殺す is in present tense, not past, so “killed” is not quite right.

なぜ待った？なぜ遅い？(naze matta? naze osoi?)

なぜ means “Why?” so these are both asking “Why” something. First is “Why did I wait?” since 待った is the past tense of 待つ (to wait) and the other is “Why am I slow?”, switching again to present tense since past tense of 遅い (osoi) is 遅かった (osokatta)

ケニーちゃんかわいいプリンセス (kenii chan kawaii purinsesu)

Again, blessedly straightforward— “Kenny is a cute princess”. Referring to him as ケニーちゃん (Kenny-chan) adds the flavor text of the singer thinking of him as like… a cute girl that they’re familiar with (since that’s what the honorific indicates) but that’s all there is to it.

[part 1/3] Kaoru no Dokugen - Chapter 0: The person I admire

"It was the first time I had ever felt a sound like that, and the songs were just intense but easy to hum and listen to. I wasn't able to make such an analysis at the time, but I felt that I had come across something extraordinary."

Notes before reading:

This chapter is from Kaoru’s first book “Dokugen" released on October 2015. It is placed after Chapter 35 (the last chapter), not part of "Ongaku to Hito" magazine. You can purchase the book 👉 here.

The title is written in Kanji as "憧人" (Akogareru Hito), which means "The person I admire". (Actually, I'm not sure if this is how it's pronounced 😅)

I first translated this chapter into Traditional Chinese in 2021, but later I found that there was no English version, so I decided to translate it again into English.

The translation is divided into three parts (I didn't expect it to be so long in English…). This is the first part. 👉 part 2. & part 3.

In this part, Kaoru talks about how he got to know the music of X JAPAN (it was called "X" back then), and how much he loved HIDE that he started playing guitar and wanted to form a band.

Repost and share are welcome.🙌 This is the first time I have translated so much words into English, so please feel free to correct me if you spot any mistake or any confusing parts.☺️

Chapter 0: The person I admire

All right, now it's time to write about this. As the title says, it's about someone I've admired for a long, loooooooooooong time.

He is the guitarist of the band, which I first knew in middle school. I've written before, the first time I heard of them was recommended by a classmate, who was really into noise music.* At that time, I honestly did not accept the intense sound I had never heard before at all. However, there were a few songs on the album that I liked, and I had those songs dubbed onto tape and listened to them over and over again.

After that, the band's debut album was released on April 21, a few days after I entered high school. Somehow I ordered the band album that was totally unacceptable when I first heard it and bought it on my way home from school.

As I wrote before, I still vividly remember the first time I heard that album. I went home, sat in front of the radio cassette without taking off my uniform, opened the CD, held the booklet in my hand, and within minutes after I pressed the play button—the word "shock" could not be used to describe what I felt. Then, for about an hour, I fell into a feeling I had never felt before and I couldn't sit still. I wanted to tell someone how I felt as soon as possible. Despite these thoughts, I couldn't leave the album behind and ran out, but stayed home and listened to it over and over again from that day on.

Intense and beautiful.

It was the first time I had ever felt a sound like that, and the songs were just intense but easy to hum and listen to. I wasn't able to make such an analysis at the time, but I felt that I had come across something extraordinary. The visuals, which had only been seen as people in bizarre outfits, even came to seem super cool because of the great songs after I heard the sound, making me want to go to the live concert.

After looking up the magazine, I found out that they were having a live show in Osaka a few days later. The tickets were sold out, but I still wanted to go to the venue. I wanted to feel the atmosphere even a little bit, so I headed to the venue with all my money (5,000 yen). The venue was the former Osaka Kosei Nenkin Kaikan medium hall. There was a park in front of the venue, and I was nervous because there were a lot of people dressed in rocking styles, but not necessarily in cosplay. There were also many people selling scalped tickets, which were highly sought after. Since it was impossible to get a ticket, I went to the stalls that were selling goods. As the time for the show was approaching, the crowd around me was gradually dispersing. I saw some people putting their ears against the wall to listen to the sound leak, so I thought I'd give it a try when the show started, but I found someone who gave me a ticket and I ended up watching the live show!

That live was……………of course, X's live. Of course, the guitarist I saw there was HIDE-san. Seeing HIDE-san at this live changed my life.

To be honest, I thought X were monsters when I first saw them. Especially HIDE-san looked like an alien, not a person from this world.

After watching such a live show, I started searching for magazines with X on them. Even when I was at school, I wanted to go home early and listen to X's songs. I got deeper and deeper into them, wanting to listen to them all the time, wanting to touch X all the time.

Then, I really wanted a Mockingbird, the same guitar HIDE-san had, so I saved up my pocket money and New Year's money, and then went to a music store in Shinsaibashi Amemura, Osaka. I went to this music store because I had read in a magazine that they had Mockingbird guitars there, but in fact they did not, and I was told to make a reservation. I still wanted one, so I ordered it on the spot, but after that I didn't hear from them for a while. Six months later, when I thought maybe it had been forgotten, the shipment finally arrived and I got the Mockingbird. I was so happy that I kept touching it.

From there, I watched X's live performance in Kansai many times, and I also went to the Tokyo Dome live several times. I recorded all the TV shows with X on them; through the help of my friends, I also found and got videos of TV shows outside of Kansai. HIDE-san didn’t look like an alien on TV, he was kind of cute.

I never thought I'd be so addicted to them. There was nothing in my eyes but X and HIDE-san.

At that time, I heard that if you wrote a letter to HIDE-san and sent it with a return postcard, you would receive a reply, so I started writing immediately and sent the letter. I wrote about how I started playing the guitar after seeing HIDE-san, and that I wanted to form a band someday. Then, what a surprise! A reply came back!!!!!!!!!

I went through the trouble of retranslating the MF manga, because you never know what you can find :)

A typical mistake: the translation keeps "Rosaly-nee-chan" as "Sister Rosaly", implying that Ted or all the children she's taking care of are her actual siblings. It confused me the first time around :P

English: "Adrian... Not just Hector, but now you too. Foolish betrayers..."

Japanese: "アドリアン…　ヘクターのみならず貴様までが。愚かな裏切り者どもめ…"

The translation is 1:1, but it's one that contains multiple nuances. Dracula calls Alucard kisama, the suffix ども implies a higher status of the speaker, and the suffix め is even more derogatory. Dracula is mad :)

English: "A great many of us will be coming..."

Japanese: "ほどなく、奴が来る"

"He will be coming soon."

I like the implication that Hector is lumping himself with the demons, but he's clearly talking about Isaac here. What makes it weirder, though, is that Ted asks what he means by "我らの"... something Hector never says. Whoops.

English: "I am the Devil's Sorcerer. At an evil castle to the east of here... I immersed myself in evil, and I commanded evil. My powers attract the ways of the darkness. They are cursed. Although I am human, I acquired the art of creating devils... and there is no doubt that they inflict harm on humanity."

Japanese: "俺は悪魔精錬師。ここより東、魔の城で…　魔を帯び、魔を従え、悪魔を作り出す術を身につけた。俺の力は闇の眷属を引きつける呪われた力だ。人の身であれど、人に害為す存在には違いないな…"

"I am a Devil Forgemaster. To the east of here, in the Demon Castle… I was entrusted with demons and I subdued them: I acquired the art of creating devils. Mine is a cursed power that attracts the followers of darkness. Although I am a human being, there is no doubt that I am a creature that causes harm to people…"

(sadly "followers of darkness" is not quite a reference to the tracks in CoD, the word is different)

The words are rearranged, but they are more or less the same. There are however some significantly different nuances.

One, "evil"/"demon". As far as I know, 魔 means exclusively "devil/demon/evil spirit", so I went with that. This changes the meaning of the verb 帯びる from "being tinged with, being imbued with" to "being entrusted with" (although it is canon that Hector was imbued with evil energy, so both interpretations are technically correct).

Two, the ambiguity of the subject in the last line changes the meaning. In the official translation, 存在 was assumed to mean the devils, and so they are the ones who inflict harm on humanity. But personally, considering the previous "although I am a human"... I think Hector is calling himself a creature that causes harm. Remember: he's really struggling to see himself as a human being :)

A bit of a funny detail: 悪魔精錬士 (akuma seirenshi, Devil Forgemaster) is spelled here as 悪魔精錬師. It's read the same, but the last kanji actually means "master" as in master of a craft, while 士 most commonly means "warrior" and in a suffix it merely means "person with a license". I wonder why this change.

English: "Hector! You disgusting child!"

Japanese: “ヘクター！忌み子め！”

1:1, but TIL that 忌み子 is an actual word that means "unwanted child, shunned child". Which hits even harder :)

English: "He's cursed... poor kid. How horrifying..."

Japanese: “呪われた…不吉な子。恐ろしい…”

"He's cursed... a sinister child. Terrible..."

不吉 means "unlucky", but in the sense that he brings back luck: he's a bad omen.

English: "And you brought home another black cat?! [...] I never should have given birth to you!!"

Japanese: "また黒猫なんて拾ってきて…　[...] お前なんて産むんじゃなかった…！！"

1:1, but Hector's mother uses the expression なんて, which roughly means "something like" and expresses disdain. In case it didn't hurt enough :)

Hector's father is an alchemist, but by looking up the word, I learned that in Japan "alchemist" is also used to disparangingly describe people who want to make easy money, without morals or shame. And the story says that the man was so concerned about power and wealth that the other villagers hated Hector also because of his dad. Huh.

(@the-crow-binary proposed a headcanon that in the past the father swindled a witch to gain money, and she placed a curse on him, which is why Hector was born with his powers.)

English: "When my heart grows weak... the devil comes speaking to me."

Japanese: "心が弱まれば悪魔は語りかけてくる。"

"If my heart grows weak, the demons come speaking to me."

Surprisingly, the nuances of the English translation are vaguer than the original, stemming from how akuma is liberally translated between "demon" and "devil" and the confusion between singular and plural: it's unclear if Hector is talking about the Devil as in Satan, the demon who caused him the nightmare, or even the fairy. The latter is because the word 使い魔 ("familiar") was translated as "servant devil", further muddying the terminology. In Japanese, it's much clearer that Hector is referring to the demons who torment him.

Also this is more of a nitpick, but the ば form implies a more hypothetical condition than "when". It's not a common occurrence: it's Hector's fear.

English: "For someone reputed to be the greatest sorcerer of the dark arts, you look pretty pitiful. I've been wanting to see you, General Hector!"

Japanese: "最強の悪魔精錬師ともあろう者がずいぶん情けない姿じゃあないか。会いたかったぞ、ヘクター！"

"For someone of your standing, the strongest Devil Forgemaster, you look quite pathetic. I missed you, Hector!"

Someone should have given the translator the proper terminology used in the game because they clearly struggled :P

I never liked how in English Isaac sounds as if he never met Hector and he's finally getting the chance to do so, not helped by the mocking "General". The Japanese version goes to the polar opposite: 会いたかった literally means "I wanted to see/meet you", but it can also mean "I missed you", which IMO fits Isaac's way of speaking much more and implies a former closer relationship. i'm saying that he had such an obvious crush that there is no other way to read it

English: "Why? Why do you attach yourself so much to these people? [...] They turned their back on Lord Dracula, who has protected that land for so long. Traitors who bit the hand that fed them!!"

Japanese: "何故だ？何故お前はそんなにも「人」に固執… [...] 長らくあの地を守ってきたドラキュラ様に背き、奥方に手をかけて裏切り者ども！！"

"Why? Why are you so fixated on those humans? [...] They are traitors who went against Lord Dracula, who has protected that land for so long, and laid hands on his wife!"

The English translation has a slightly different nuance: it almost implies that Hector grew fond of certain people, which is not true... yet :P in Japanese, it's more clear that Isaac is just taunting Hector's mercy for humankind as a whole, judging by his emphasis.

Also, as it was already noted, he specifically mentions Lisa in his speech, who was mysteriously cut in the translation.

English: "Otherwise... you'll fall victim to my spear right now, Hector."

Japanese: "さもなくば、今ここで我が槍のサビになれ、ヘクター。"

"Otherwise, become the rust on my spear, Hector."

The English translation works well enough. I just think that expression is raw :P it's expressed even better in French.

English: "It can't be true... there's no way. There's no way Count Dracula could be defeated."

Japanese: “そうだ…　そんな、ドラキュラ様が敗れるはず…”

"That’s right… Lord Dracula must have been defeated…"

... either I'm misunderstanding something, or the translator took some liberties. Not that it doesn't work, actually it might be better... but I'm confused.

A minor note: when Hector is invested by the waves of the Curse, and he hears what appear to be demonic voices, they say "you killed it", as in his cursed power. In Japanese it has no object, it's just "お前が殺した". Killing a power isn't exactly natural, so I believe it's actually Dracula, shown in the vision, accusing Hector of killing him.

English: "Hector, damn you! You, I'll never forgive!"

Japanese: “ヘクター！貴様だけは許さん！”

The English translation always sounded off to me, but now I understand the intent. Isaac is specifically singling Hector out: he's saying that he is the only one (だけ) he won't forgive, even though he has realized that Trevor has killed Dracula. But without italics it's hard to convey this emphasis on "you", so I can't blame the translator too much.

(extremely minor note, but Isaac switches from omae to kisama the moment Hector makes his Peak and Raw speech. Which is to be expected, of course. The weird part is that he uses omae again when he rants "if you and I had been there, Belmont wouldn't have...!". An involuntary request for camaraderie?)

I just noticed that the official translation, when describing the aftermath of Trevor's victory on Dracula, calls him "the young lord of Belmont". In Japanese it's simply "若きベルモンド家の英雄", "the young hero of the Belmont family". accidental nfcv foreshadowing?

English: "You alone always kept yourself looking human!"

Japanese! "お前は昔から…　自分だけいつまでも人間のような顔をして！"

The English translation is very literal. I think I would translate this as "You always were the only one who kept yourself human!", even if literally it means "you alone always had a human-like face!" lmao

(also notice the omae again. It's as if Isaac can't be too derogatory on Hector when speaking in the past)

English: "You possessed more powerful sorcery than I! And you were able to get closer to Count Dracula over me!!"

Japanese: “俺より強い魔力を持ち、俺よりドラキュラ様の近くにいながら...!”

"Even though your magic is stronger than mine, and you were closer to Lord Dracula than me...!"

That "even though" (ながら) subtly changes the nuance. Isaac isn't just venting: he's confused as to why Hector, despite being Dracula's special boy, insisted on "looking human", or clinging onto his humanity.

As I pointed out here, chapter 4 is not called "redemption", but "atonement". The two words have slightly different nuances :)

When Rosaly tells Hector that the priest has spread the news that Trevor saved everyone, she speaks in a respectful way. She calls Trevor "Belmont-sama", calls him an exorcist, ("悪魔払い") and uses keigo when talking about his feats ("救って下さった"). It's cute and it shows how much Trevor is respected for his feats :)

English: "It might not be a bad idea to stay here for a while in this sunny place..."

Japanese: "ほんの少しだけこの日だまりに身を置くのも悪くはない。"

"It wouldn't be bad to stay under the sun for a little while..."

Kind of. 日だまり means "sunny spot". The translation works perfectly fine, and it paints Rosaly's house as a warm, happy home... but I think this is meant to be a callback to the first page of this scene, Hector standing under the shadow and Rosaly dragging him to the light. Hector is finally accepting to stand under the sunlight :)

What you guys have been waiting for...my Hitsuhina's Children Headcanon!

Finally I've decided to upload this after a while :'D this is my personal headcanon of how their child would look like.

Early Disclaimer:

It's going to be long

I have limited Japanese ability, but I do understand some lexical context. This is why I never engage myself to do fan-translation works despite have knowledge about it as I prevent sharing misinformation. I learned about translation etiquette during my days as literature student in university, so I did my best to not being biased while creating this, despite people's translation style could be different from one to another. Nevertheless, I accept any critics from those who's much more fluent than me and have more knowledge regarding naming rules and cultures in Japan. I will take it as reflection to deepening my knowledge more with Japanese language, culture, history, and societies since all of this are tied together and can not be separated! Along with taking down this post if any of the content turn out to contain any misleading information.

I haven't made any art for them, but I hope the explanation below could help anyone visualize how they would look like in my headcanon!

Now let's get down to the business!!

1. Hitsugaya Hayato (日番谷隼)

隼 (はやと) = peregrine falcon

This one was pretty tricky since name 'Hayato' in most case were written like this -> 隼人 by adding 'human' kanji at the end. But since I saw a real public figure named Hayato who have their name being published with single kanji like above, I can say that Hitsugaya Hayato will have the same case!

Birthday: March 17th

Zanpakuto: 青山郎 (せい・ざん・ろう || Seizanrou = Blue Specter )

I imagine he will inherit Momo's hair and Toshiro's eye color. His overall features will look like Toshiro uwu. I honestly conflicted to made him having Toshiro's hair with Momo's feature instead of the one I come up with, since on Kazui and Ichika's case, they have their father's hair and their mother's feature. But then I remember Ichigo have Isshin's face and his orange hair were probably inherit from Masaki's side, so I'll make Hayato having that situation too.

He'll wield an elemental zanpakuto with a fire-type spirit. His zanpakuto's name will be 青山郎 (Seizanrou = Blue Specter). This zanpakuto naming idea were inspired by Hyourinmaru itself. Hyourin (氷輪) if translated literally means 'ice ring' but it could also mean ' the moon (that shine as cold as ice)' hence why there's a crescent shaped pendant at the end of Hyourinmaru's chain.

And 青山 ( せい・ざん -> Seizan) if translated literally means 'lush/green mountain', but it could also mean 'grave' or 'burial place'. Adding 郎 ('rou', same as the last kanji in Toshiro's name, means 'boy') at the end of it, I made the equivalent translation being 'Blue Specter' (boy from burial place → 'someone' from the graveyard → a ghost).

//I wonder if it make sense, and if it's appropriate to name zanpakuto this way//

The command will be 蘇れ! ( よみがえ・れ = Yomigaere = (lit.)"Resurrect!" || But my personal translation to make the context a lot sensible in battlefield -> "Rise from the Death!" ), and the shikai technique will looks like blue fire orbs appearing on top of his blade. As Hayato calls its name, the blue flame will rise and change form into what Hayato desire to attack the enemies, as if it was a ghost that raises from its death body beneath the ground.

I'd like to think it's manifestations being a cemetery caretaker/keeper with lantern on his hand. Seizanrou's manifestation and overall concept was also partly inspired by 'Lantern Specter', the ghost in Taiwanese horror game 'Detention'.

I'd like to think it'll be great to have Hayato having a horrifying dream when Seizanrou on its own way to communicate with its master, the way Hyourinmaru did to Toshiro. Hayato will have a great equal portion of training from Toshiro as they experience the same case, but also with Momo as fellow fire-type zanpakuto wielder.

2. Hitsugaya Kanjirou (日番谷柑蒔朗)

柑 (かん = citrus, orange) 蒔 (じ / ま・く = to sow)朗 (ろう = bright, cheerful) → "Orange Tree"

Birthday: October 3rd

Zanpakuto: 霜咲 (しも・ざき || Shimozaki = Blooming Frost)

This time she inherit Toshiro's hair and Momo's eyes, with overall feature dominant to Momo. She might gonna be daddy's little girl, because I like the idea of Toshiro having daughter, and that he has a soft spot for them :'))))

I was almost thought this name feel a bit too boyish for her, since so far I know, the commonly used ろう kanji was in this form for naming -> 郎. I did further research and find out this 朗 (ろう) kanji could also be used in naming, and have a great meaning. Adding the fact that I just found out 'Kanjirou' was actually A FLOWER NAME.

It's a sub-type of Camellia sasanqua, one of many types of camellia with deep magenta colors that natives to both China and Japan. This flower also blooms during fall to winter, which I think is perfect with my birth date set-up for her. I like the idea of either Momo or Toshiro get the inspiration to name her 'Kanjirou' the moment they saw this flower blooms near Momo's due date, while their home at the time starting to be filled with the sweet-citrusy smell of clementines.

Adding the fact that Momo's name not only refers to the 'peach' fruit itself, but could also be the 'peach blossom', we now have Father-Son duo with animal inspired name and Mother-Daughter duo with flower + fruit inspired name in our Hitsuhina little family! ^q^

For her zanpakuto spirit, she's a wielder of ice-type elemental zanpakuto. And her zanpakuto name will be 'Shimozaki' (霜咲 = Blooming Frost).

霜 (しも || Shimo = Frost)

咲 (さく・-ざき || sa-ku・-zaki = to blossom)

I haven't though so far about her shikai, but I like to imagine the technique will involves around scattering ice particle in form of haze and freeze the enemy in a form of blossoms.

Also I haven't thought about the spirit manifestation form TwT maybe later //forgive meee//

Again, she's also receive equal portion of training from both parents. As she's a fellow ice-type zanpakuto wielder, she practice swordmanship with Toshiro, and taught Kido by Momo (she's good at it!)

Andddddddd as you all can see, I'm trying my best to have their child looks like their 'literal' child with names and everything. It took me a while to find children's name that would match them, but I'm lucky to encounter 'Hayato' and 'Kanjirou' since I think it'll be a great idea for Hitsuhina's children to have names that rhymes with their parents' names (Toushirou and Momo). One of many things that motivates me to create this characters because I want to have their appearance on my fic :') so starting now, if ever I come up with Hitsuhina domestic stories/art in the future, it's easier for me to just pick them back from this reference and add them to the story/art uwu

The concept art will follows sooner~! Please have this for a while!

Being fully honest Dabi coming to Endv after being ignored yet again doesn't change the fact that he has been ignored yet again. Even now endv has his eyes on afo and I can't see it changing

Nah, I get that. I feel the same. To be honest I see this as another set up for failure. So far the heroes have consistently been making the wrong choices and letting things escalate instead of trying better ways of facing their opponents.

I didn't wanna say it in case I jinxed it with my prediction, but if we are to take Hawks and Mic's reactions as the standard for how the old gen will continue to act moving forward, then I'm expecting Enji to be much the same. He's gonna fight Touya like a villain who's too far gone. Possibly he'll even echo his colleagues and try to protect Touya's idealized memory by killing the man his son has become.

I might be wrong about this of course... But looking back at Enji's internal narration during the Central Hospital chapters and his thoughts as he fought AFO... He's still nowhere near recognizing that Dabi and Touya are the same person.

Remember this line?

Well, here's some translation trivia. In japanese he's only calling him a mass murderer (大量殺人者). The only reason why we know that he's even talking about Touya and not any other PLF villain is because the furigana (the little reading on the right of the aforementioned kanji string above) tells us he's referring to his son (むすこ). Stuff like this is hard to translate because English doesn't have an organic way to do the same kind of word play, so the only way to get across both definitions is to include them both in the line itself, like the character is uttering them at once. The famous "a dance with your son, here in hell" was another example of Hori using furigana that doesn't match with the kanji they're paired with, to get across a double meaning. But for the sake of understanding Enji's mentality, I'd like to stress that he sees Dabi first and foremost as a "mass murderer". Only incidentally, like an afterthought, as his son. You'll also notice how in that same scene he's thinking about "fighting him". Not reuniting, not seeing how he's doing. Fighting. Like he would any other villain, because to him this is still a matter to be tackled as a hero and not a father.

Point is, Enji still doesn't fully recognize Touya in Dabi.

This is how he pictures him in his mind's eye. This is not by far a flattering image. For all that Enji says that he recognizes the wrongs he did to Touya, the image he conjures when he thinks of him is not that of a man falling apart from the weight of unaddressed trauma and desperation. He sees a monster, grinning maniacally, reveling in Enji's anguish with sadistic glee. This is not the son he abused, over and over, until he had an emotional breakdown and lost himself. This is Enji picturing an enemy, someone not to feel any sympathy for. Someone whose most prominent feature is his creepy grinning mouth, open wide as if ready to devour everything Enji's been working for all these years.

Even in his thoughts, he keeps referring to Dabi as an abstract evil rather than a person:

He's the physical manifestation of Enji's "mistakes", not his son. Not the boy he said he missed so dearly he hoped he could get a second chance with.

Touya is Othered as an abstract being, the sum of every flaw Enji possesses but never wanted to acknowledge.

Now compare that to how he saw Touya as an idealized martyr:

Here Touya is remembered as a good kid, not through the distorted lenses above, because up until this moment he's still a "good victim". Someone who died before he could become an obstacle, and as such still someone who Enji treats with humanity. He brings offer to his altar and manifests "regret" over his premature death, because this Touya is easy to mourn. After all, with Touya gone, who's gonna complain about Enji using his memory as a justification for the continued abuse of Shouto and the rest of the family?

Certainly not Touya. The dead are the perfect people to idealize because they can no longer fight for their rights as a living person would. And Enji clearly knows this. He obviously ignores how training Shouto and punching him so hard he pukes goes directly against everything Touya ever wanted because Touya's wishes are simply no longer part of the equation. Touya is no longer a person but just a a cause that Enji needs to honor (arbitrarily, and with even more abuse than before).

But when Touya comes back, and suddenly he's a person with agency once again and not just an idealized memory anymore...

Suddenly, he becomes "a mass murderer".

So... No, I'm not really expecting Enji to turn around and act like a good dad just because Dabi showed up. As you said, Dabi chasing him down doesn't make Enji any less neglectful or any less at fault, and if Horikoshi knows what he's doing, he's probably about to make him do something extremely uncalled for and totally catered to himself, as Enji's actions so far have only been shielding his own ego from any genuine remorse

Hello!

I saw the word "誤植" in one of your recent post and I have a question, hope it's ok ;;; I checked both the kanji on Jsho, how the kanji are written, each one presents two different forms of writing. It's not the first time I noticed this and I know it's because a form of a kanji can change based on the writing font (on pc/different sites/how it is written by hand). The question is, usually, what is the most acceptable form of the two? If a japanese person were to write "誤植" down for example, would they write this version we can see here on Tumblr? Or the other version? Is there a version that is preferable to study over the other? (I'm studying both but it can be a bit confusing sometimes when these versions differs much)

If I understand your question correctly, I think you are talking about the difference between writing the character in handwriting and how it appears when you type it on the screen, particularly for the kanji 誤. (The handwriting for 植 is a little less noticeable of a difference, but the following applies to this character too!)

When you type it on the screen it looks like:

However, when you write it by hand it looks like:

So why do they look different?

Well, to put it rather simply, the typed character is a font, whereas the handwritten one comes from calligraphy.

If you study Japanese formally, stroke order is emphasized quite a bit. The stroke order for characters is generally top to bottom and left to right. So when you write you learn the handwritten form, such as the one you find in the clip above from my dictionary app.

When you read the character in a text, however, it is a typographical font and sometimes they are changed from handwriting. The gonben radical on the left side of this particular kanji (言 = gonben radical, "word" radical) is not written by hand as it appears in a font. Therefore if you write it by hand as the font shows, your handwritten character will look off (and your Japanese teacher will circle it in red ^^;).

There are certain characters that appear differently in fonts than they do handwritten, so it's best to check how to handwrite a kanji when you are learning. You can often do this in a dictionary app on your mobile or you can always look it up online. There are rules with writing kanji that you pick up along the way, such as the first stroke of the 誤 character that looks horizontal but is actually written in a downwards left to right motion.

A quick example: 人 vs 入:

When typed, the characters for person (人) and enter (入) can look very similar (depending on font), but when handwritten (above) they look very different. You can also see the difference in stroke order.

Whereas sometimes when typed (above) the font can make them appear very similar.

So, in the end, basically it's like writing letters by hand vs typing them out. Fonts can do strange things to certain kanji and sometimes kanji can appear very different when compared in handwriting vs typing, so be aware!

A week or two ago there was a community discussion going on about enstars names, so naturally, I had to pitch in with my tinfoil hat and corkboard, to make it all about akatsuki.

The lotus analogy is frequently used with Keito, to describe his unwavering resolve and morals. I know most people don't think of Keito when they think of snakes (they tend to think of Ibara, who fits the Christian Snake-Person archetype) but in Buddhism, Snakes are a symbol of rebirth.

蓮巳敬人 (Hasumi Keito) can be directly translated to something like: "Lotus Snake Respected Person"

They're also heavily associated with bodies of water, something that you might see crop up with him a lot. As for his first name, the Respect part is pretty obvious, referencing his strict personality, but what I really like is the little 人 character. Recognize it? Yup its the symbol that's used in-game for fans. It basically just means 'person'.

There's the undeniably human part of Keito Hasumi, the one that he can never escape, and that encapsulates him. Maybe at a time it filled him with despair, but what is mankind if not propelled by Hubris?

He's the Guy Ever.

Souma's name is interesting (神崎颯馬) Because Kanzaki is a real last name. There isn't much connection to his character as far as I've looked into the origins of it though.

You could translate Souma's name directly into something like: Coastal God Swift Horse

神 is literally the character for God (kami). 崎 means peninsula, but coast also works. This is pretty blatantly a reference to his family's entanglement with the Shinkai Cult. It's impressive to see the foreshadowing with his name.

颯馬 (swift horse) referencing his affinity for horses. Also neat that he owns and rides one (shout out to saigo-don) . 馬 also generally means 'steed', which ties into his tendency to become a vehicle for other people's wishes. His lack of independence, his desire to be relied upon. He's good at doing what he's told, just like a well tamed horse.

鬼龍紅郎 can literally be translated to (Oni Dragon Crimson Guy)

Okay so Oni are an interesting creature mythologically speaking, because firstly, they're intelligent 'evils', and their symbolic meaning varies largely. I'll jot down the possible connections to Kuro in bullets.

• Come in the color red

• Humanoid, scary, intimidating

• Can be reformed and converted into Buddhism (we'll discuss this later)

• sometimes used as a guardian symbol

Dragons are also similarly intimidating creatures but they have more positive connotations! They're viewed as Guardians and symbols of strength. They're also associated with guarding water bodies (I hope you're picking up what I'm putting down)

The 紅 in Kuro is a character you'll find appears frequently in Akatsuki's discography and name. I like to theorize that Kuro was the reason Keito named it 紅月 and not 赤月, even though they basically both mean 'red moon' and 赤月 is the more Obvious name choice.

Kuro's name is also a bit of a pun, because although it means red, kuro (黒) means black. His hair. Leo calls him 黒 when he's gloomy lol.

Trivia/Symbolism corner! A lot of this is just my theories.

Oni are commonly depicted wearing tiger skin clothing and carrying an iron club. Sound familiar? Tetora's name (鉄虎) literally means Iron Tiger.

Souma displays an affinity for sea and water animals, Kanata has the kanji for 'deep-sea' in his name (深海) Keito is more representative of shallow waters (think of a Lotus filled pond). Souma has his loyalties torn between two water bodies, which is very neat.

Souma switches loyalties from Kanata to Keito... he's 'surfacing'

(Kind of like a turtle)

Summer bird features this huge swathe of shallow water and a bird taking flight into the sky, maybe Because he's becoming independent of those figures and exploring his own aspirations.

The fact that 鬼 in Chinese means 'ghost' and then you have akatsuki mortality trio again with 鬼 (ghost/soul) 神 (god/immortal) 人 (mortal)

Coming back to akatsuki and Water, there's 蓮巳 which evokes the image of a pond, 龍 which guard bodies of water.

Kind of like how Kuro was Keito's physical shield during the war. Both snakes and dragons are used interchangeably on occasion as 'guardian' motifs in temples.

of course 紅蓮, which means red lotus or just a way to refer to a layer of hell in Buddhism. Hell couple

The idea that Oni can be converted to Buddhism, kind of parallels Kuro leaving his delinquent lifestyle behind to follow Keito, the Buddhism Guy. In Unification by force, Souma even points out that Kuro has been copying keito and saying prayers before he eats.

Kuro's themes of self-improvement and his 'Soul' motif. the Buddhist idea of refining the immortal soul into its best self.
