Shit to Watch Out For If You're Interested in Magic:
The Rites Are The Rites - Closed practices are closed for a reason. Open practices are open for a reason. Learn those reasons. The history of magic is a messy and complicated thing, but learning will only enrich you. Remember, it is possible to learn about things without participating.
Magic Does Not Require Blood, Money, or Cruelty - Rarely, people will encourage unsanitary or dangerous practices. Don't get tetanus. Don't eat poisonous herbs. Bleeding and sickness are not necessary for magic. Be extremely wary of anyone who crosses established boundaries to ask for money, items, or services. Magic does not require money. Sometimes people are just bigoted assholes. Even if their information is good, you can likely get it from someone who isn't an asshole. Magic does not require cruelty.
Disease Is Not Occult - Your physical, mental, and psychological illnesses are not a gift from the gods. Magic cannot cure them. Take your meds. Listen to your doctor. If something about your practice fucks with your physical or mental health, stop immediately. No spell or religion is worth your physical and/or mental health. There Are Gates, But No Keepers - Magic requires study, practice, and preparation. Its called a practice for a reason. There are best practices, common protocols, and traditions to be respected, but almost nothing is inherently required for magic. There are no deities or spirits you are required to contact, no drugs you are required to take, no books you are required to read.
The Paths Are Myriad - There is no "one path" or "true magic." Be wary of anyone proclaiming their ideas to be the One True Way forwards. Many rules are generally held by practitioners of all stripes, but very very few thing could be called universal. Paths twist and cross, none are inherently superior to another. Additionally, gods and spirits are not people, and summoners are not journalists. Personal conversations with deities are not a primary source.

Telling people to study magic, the occult, etc. by just "reading books" is incredibly irresponsible because many, many, many books on these topics contain pseudohistory, bigotry, and cultural appropriation that the average person is ill-equipped to recognize. Like, the average person isn't going to be able to tell, for example, when a text from the Renaissance is using fake Hebrew and making up shit about Jewish mystical practices or whatever. This is why the work of people like Dr. Justin Sledge over on ESOTERICA is extremely valuable, because it's a great place for absolute beginners to start developing a sense of this stuff.

Update:
I officially left a toxic discord known as the Occult lounge (please don't join, here’s why)
I have been noticing issues from the "owners" And stepped down as mod and educator. Fine everything was fine. But the problems this server was having was more so in the back ground. I said it pretty well here so this was my last post which I did post in the main chat for everyone to see.
"Hey guys. There hasn't been an official announcement because this server doesn't do those anymore but I stepped away from being a mod and educator due to a feeling of being overwhelmed. It also is because the admin staff likes to make decisions without consulting others in staff or making radical changes because one member instead of multiple people say they dislike something. I don't know if others feel this way but it's become a toxic environment for those that speak up and don't follow the status quo of the grand vision of the server "owners" if I didn't know the actual definition of a cult. I'd call it a cult.
This may be said in a moment of irritation in which case I'm sorry. But I do think it's time someone was honest with the rest of you.
With that, So long"
I received a message on discord from said owner saying "thanks for that have a goodone" after the fact. Couldnt respond tho. Cool. Thought we were done right? No I received a follow up ON TUMBLR from the same person in the picture below.
Which is right. I could have said something to you...(not really seeing how you blocked me but...oh well)...the point of the matter is you are not a person someone speaks up to. Everytime they do you do voice recordings, long messages, and get so defensive on why you're right and their wrong. So no...I didn't feel I COULD speak up to you. Especially since I gently suggested something to you today and you blatantly ignored me and sent someone else after me. Everyone else in staff I don't have an issue with except those that call themselves "owners"
You don't fucking own me and you don't own my peace.

Ghosts of New Eden and the Occult in Colonial America:
While playing Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden, I was tickled when one of the first people you meet describes himself and his father as demonologists. That might seem out of place in colonial America, given the nature of the religious milieu at the time, but occultism was all over the place in the colonies.
Despite the belief that magical practice was Satanic in nature, fortune telling, palm reading and particularly astrology were very common practices, and even alchemists could be found in some places. Wealthy people often kept books on magic and demonology in their personal libraries, and one governor of Connecticut had a copy of Cornelius Agrippa's Three Books of Occult Philosophy and some of John Dee's books in his collection. Even the family of Joseph Smith, the founder of Mormonism, practiced types of folk magic.
But how could people in a society built on what we would call extreme Christianity practice these arts? Well, faith never stopped anyone in Continental Europe, so many of those traditions carried over, but it was probably also the distance from standard religious ritual as seen in Catholicism that allowed folk magic to fill that void to some degree (the channel Esoterica on YouTube dives into this quite nicely). Even many monotheists today have spiritual beliefs and practices that aren't properly sanctioned by their religious texts or authorities, so it shouldn't come as a shock that people have, and always will, forge their own spirituality regardless of the "rules".
Just another reason that the setting of Banishers really tickles me.
