doctor who coming back in the year of 2023 when terfism and biological essentialism and transphobia are on the rise and making one of THE most hyped up episodes by bringing back fan favorites david tennant and catherine tate. all about being trans
showing rose being bullied and her grandma struggling to get it right but still being supportive. and shaun and donna being the greatest parents by being ready to burn the world down to protect their daughter. the doctor asking for the meep's pronouns AND IT'S NORMAL???
and all of that is brilliant to see rose as a trans character and it is important to the narrative. BUT THEN. ROSE BEING TRANS SAVES DONNA'S LIFE BY TAKING HALF OF THE METACRISIS. BECAUSE THE DOCTOR IS MALE AND FEMALE AND NEITHER AND MORE. AND THAT IS INTEGRAL TO DOCTOR WHO AS A WHOLE. and it saved donna's life
to see doctor who be so BLATANTLY trans and nonbinary at the core of the series. the multiple references to the fact that before fourteen, thirteen was a woman. so to see this? trans people stay winning. thank you doctor who for doubling down on the importance of the doctor being trans because oh my god I am so emotional about this

Shaun x Autistic!teen!reader - favourite things
Tumblr media
Hello I haven't seen anyone asking for the Good Doctor imagines so I was wondering if you could do one where Teen Autistic Reader goes in hospital for a lung transplant (because her mother was smoking when she was pregnant with her and caused a lot of problems when she was growing up as well) and Shaun becomes a big brother while Reader tells him about her fluffy bunny plush and lots of facts about rabbits? Just a fluffy moment when Shaun's adopted father (cannot remember his name) takes the two to see bunnies? - Anon💜
You were anxiously watching the door, waiting for the familiar face of your favourite doctor to walk in.
Every day without fail he came in at this time and you had something to show him, so you stared at the door just waiting.
A minute later he walked in with your chart in his hands and he walked over to you.
“Hello (Y/N).” He greeted.
“Shaun! Look I have something to show you!”
You pulled out your phone and showed him a photo your friend had texted you.
“That is a big rabbit.” He said.
“It’s my rabbit plush! It’s huge! You like rabbits and I want to show you it, I thought you would like it, hey did you know baby rabbits are called kittens?”
“I did not know that, I like that. Thank you for telling me.” He smiled.
He looked at your chart and you looked at him, tilting your head a little bit.
“How are you feeling today?”
“I feel better, it doesn’t hurt as much to breathe anymore.”
“That is good.”
He asked a few more questions, did some checks on your and he set your chart down at the end of the bed.
“Will you tell me more facts about rabbits?”
You happily nodded and began to spout all sorts of facts about rabbits to him, and he happily listed, clasping and unclasping his hands while you tapped yours against your shoulder.
You were rocking back and forth slightly, and your breathing was ragged and Shaun frowned.
“Can I listen to your lungs?” He asked.
You nodded and you breathed while he listened to the sounds of your lungs.
“Are you struggling to breathe?”
“A little.. it’s okay though..”
“When you get excited you talk a lot, your lungs cannot keep up with the amount you breathe when you talk quickly.”
“Oh…”
“Do you need your cannula?”
You shook your head and beamed brightly up at him.
“No it’s okay. I don’t mind I’m used to it.”
“Okay. Will you call the nurse if you need it?”
“Uh huh, Shaun?”
He stopped what he was doing and turned to you.
“Will you have lunch with me? I get lonely eating alone.”
Shaun smiled and nodded his head.
“I would like that, I do not like the cafeteria it is very loud. I will have lunch with you.”
“Thank you!”
Shaun left to carry on working, and you spent most of the morning talking to your friend through texts, researching more things to learn about and wondering around your room.
You were standing in front of the window, looking outside at all the people walking past.
“You should be in bed.”
You turned around.
“You’re not Shaun.”
“No, he’s a little caught up with work, he asked me to tell you. I’m Dr Glassman.” He smiled.
“How’d you know I should be in bed?”
“I read your chart before coming in, I thought I’d do your next check up if you don’t mind?”
You shook your head, hand tapping your shoulder.
“Only Dr Murphy can do my check ups.”
“Alright, that’s okay. How are you feeling? Any chest pain or struggle to breathe?”
“It hurts a little, but that’s normal. Are you a surgeon too? Do you like rabbits?”
“I am a surgeon, and I do like rabbits. Can I sit while you wait for Shaun?”
You nodded and he sat down in a chair, and you guys spoke about rabbits and what it was like being a surgeon.
Your lunch was brought in but you didn’t touch it, you waited and carried on walking around the room until Shaun came in with his lunch.
“Oh Dr Glassman you’re still here.” He said.
“I thought id keep (Y/N) company while she waited for you.” He smiled.
You sat on your bed to eat your lunch.
“Will you be the one to give me new lungs Shaun?”
“I will be in the operating room, yes.”
You nodded your head.
“When I get my new lungs I’m going to see the rabbits. Will you come see the rabbits with me?”
Shaun smiled.
“I would like that.”
Dr Glassman smiled as he watched the pair of you interact.
He had heard from others like Melendez and Andrews that you and Shaun had bonded, you prefer Shaun because he understood you better.
You and Shaun got along really well, and anyone could see that Shaun worried about you, he liked talking to you so when you were having a bad day it made him stressed.
You on the other hand saw Shaun as your older brother, if you had a brother you wanted him to be Shaun.
Dr Glassman smiled to himself and a few days later he came back to your room.
“How would you like to go on a trip?” He asked.
“Where to? If it’s to the big machine again I don’t want to do that I don’t like that.”
“No it’s not to the CT.” He chuckled.
“Where too?”
“It’s a surprise, Shaun is coming too.”
“Okay. I want to go. Is it okay if I go? Am I allowed?”
“Well you’ll be with two doctors, and I’ve already gotten permission to take you, so it’s alright.”
You nodded and you went into the bathroom to change and he helped you get your oxygen tank and everything ready.
Shaun met you both downstairs and he was just as curious as you.
You were led into a small pet store and you looked around.
“You must be (Y/N), I’ve got a surprise for you, and your friend.”
You looked up at Shaun, and you clasped the bottom of his jacket and he looked at your hand but said nothing.
You both were taken across the store to a small pen and you gasped.
“Bunnies!” You beamed.
“They are so small..” Shaun whispered.
“Here, let’s sit you down.” Dr Glassman smiled.
He helped you sit down and Shaun sat down next to you, both of your reaching out to pet the little rabbits and you happily spoke about them.
It was a day off you and Shaun both needed, nothing to stress or worry about, just each other and some adorable little baby rabbits

"The Good Doctor set back autism acceptance by 50 years" No, it's just showing how ablist people actually are once you get past respectability politics. People are making fun of Shaun explicitly and solely because of his less pleasant autistic traits. They say, "I support autistic people" while mocking Shaun for his monotone voice, awkwardness, lack of eye contact, meltdowns, and inappropriate reactions at inopportune times. The Good Doctor did not set back autistic acceptance, it just shows how most folks' ""acceptance"" of autism is purely for looks, and stops once an autistic person starts showing their traits instead of masking until they die.

one thing I love about the recent specials is the character of shaun Temple, and in turn what this reflects about Donna's characterisation, and showing how RTD understands her (she is his character) so much better than Moffat (who is a sexist, classist wanker, so no surprise).
The two vastly differing understandings of Donna are reflected through Donna's Happy Ending Husbands, Shaun and the one from silence in the library I will refer to as Bob, because I can't even remember if he has a name.
(disclaimer that i haven't watched silence in the library for a couple of years)
We don't see much of either of them, but it's clear Shaun is a good guy. He loves and supports Donna (and Rose!). He values her opinion.
Now, Bob. No hate on Bob, I'm sure he's a great guy too. Lots of hate on Moffat, though. He portrays Donna's ideal life as married to a guy who can't talk, so she can talk over him, never shut up, because she's always talking, having a go at someone, and now she's happy with a husband and kids who can't tell her to shut up.
This is just such a massive misunderstanding of Donna, and it annoys me so much.
There's this quote from series 4, along the lines of Donna "shouting at the world because no one's listen", which I think summarises it quite nicely. She's a temp, and no one gets her coffee. Lance wasn't particularly nice to her. For the first 30-odd years of her life, her mother was constantly nagging her, chipping away at her self esteem. The whole idea of Donna thinking she's no one is so prevelant in both the Runaway Bride and s4.
She shouts at the world because otherwise it doesn't listen to her at all, because she has to fight to be appreciated and valued, and even then, pre-s4, she still isn't listened to.
And Shaun listens to her and actually values her and what she has to say, instead of being unable to stop her talking constantly, enforcing her thoughts on everyone and not at all considering of what other people might want to say.

It’s over bloody football that she finally breaks.
She’d gotten Shaun a new one for Christmas, just because. Lord knows he loves the game enough, even if he hasn’t had as much time for the local rec league these last few years. Late in the afternoon, she takes a cuppa out onto the porch for the first moment alone she’s found all day, and finds him and the Doctor playing a pickup game in the yard.
Shaun’s been pretty skilled with a football for as long as she’s known him. He toes it into the air, juggles it about on his feet for a few moments, then passes it off to the Doctor with his heel.
"Alright, just like that. Top of your foot," he says.
The Doctor manages to catch the ball, grinning from ear to ear as he taps it up into the air again. "Here we go! Think I’ve got it!”
"That’s it, Mate!"
They manage to juggle once, twice, before clumsily tossing it back toward Shaun. He receives the pass effortlessly. In a move that would be impressive if she hadn’t seen him fall on his ass a near hundred times trying to learn it, he throws his leg over and twists around, taps the ball into the ground, and kicks it back up.
The Doctor lets out a whoop, mouth wide open in an awed smile. “Blimey! That’s brilliant!”
And suddenly, Donna’s eyes are burning.
After fifteen years of missing something she couldn’t even remember, and even longer wondering if she’d ever have this many people to love her, she’s got her entire family in one place for Christmas. Her best friend and the love of her life are goofing around in the yard as though they’ve known each other for years, not mere months. They don’t have to do that. There’s nothing forcing them to be anything more than cordial, but they’ve begun a great friendship in their own right and she’s so damn grateful for it. For them.
From down on the lawn, Shaun looks up to throw her a dazzling smile. It falters into confusion, and then concern, and then the sort of fond teasing look that she knows means she’s been caught. He nudges the Doctor and nods in her direction. They share a look, and then the Doctor throws an arm around Shaun’s shoulders as they make their way back toward the house.
“All right, Love?” Shaun calls.
She waves her hand at him, trying to blink her eyes dry before they reach her. “Fine, fine,” she says, taking a rushed sip of her tea.
“You know, Shaun, I think we may have made her emotional,” the Doctor says, feigning shock. “I think she may be crying!”
“Oh shut up!” She tries to glare at them, but she can’t keep it up for long. “I’m just happy. I can’t tell you how much it means to me that you two are getting along.”
The Doctor grins and Shaun reaches out to take her hand. “Well, we’ve got a pretty strong cause uniting us,” he points out. “Can’t very well not get on with a bloke who’d do anything for my wife. They’re family!”
Donna laughs again, watery. “Damn right they are.” When she looks back at the Doctor, he’s still smiling goofily. “Oh, stop looking at me like that.” Their only response is to grin even wider, a gleam in their eye that could be mischief, or could very well be tears of their own. She smacks them on the arm. “Stop it!”
But it’s too late.
Instinctively, she tries to reach up and brush away the rogue tears, but Shaun is still holding her free hand. Before she can try another way to hide the evidence, she’s swallowed up in a hug from either side. “Hang on, hang on!” She shouts, turning to quickly set her tea on the patio table. That done, she throws her arms around them both and holds on as tight as she can.
They stay that way until Rose sticks her head out the back door and shouts that dinner is nearly ready. Once they’ve all stepped back again, Donna wipes at her eyes and tries to blink herself back into control. “Idiots.”
“True,” Shaun agrees.
“But you still love us,” the Doctor finishes. She can’t help but laugh as they each press a quick kiss on her cheek before rushing inside to follow the smell Christmas dinner.
“I do,” she sighs after them, shaking her head. “No idea why, but I do.”

As an autistic person, I want to say something about The Good Doctor.
Over the last month or so - but especially the last two days - Twitter has gone nuts about dragging the absolute piss out of this show. Because autism representation is so rare in major television shows or movies, I’ve been finding myself questioning whether The Good Doctor is in fact “good” representation in the slightest or if I’m just clinging onto it because it’s one of the few shows out there with an autistic lead… and people dragging the shit out of it has made me even more unsure because I’ve only seen one and a half seasons of the show so far and so I can’t really speak on how the show has done recently in regards to portraying autism.
Personally, do I feel that Shaun in TGD represents me and how I am autistic? No. But to be honest, I wasn’t expecting him to because autism is a spectrum and the areas where my autism affects my life will be different to other people’s; it’s also worth noting that it’s been shown that autistic traits are different in girls than in boys, and that girls tend to mask more etc. Obviously this does not apply to ALL boys and ALL girls, but in general it’s thought that girls and women tend to have different traits to boys and men.
With this in mind, Shaun actually does remind me at times of a child at the school I’m currently at - again, not 100% the same but there’s similarities in regards to how they talk, what they say etc. However, that child is five-nearly-six, and Shaun is a grown man so… do with that information what you will. There have also been a couple of moments I’ve had so far watching the show where it’s seemed like lightening has struck and I’m like “Oh that’s me!” - namely the social awkwardness and a meltdown scene. It’s not every episode, it’s only on occasion, but it’s been nice to see nonetheless because the only other time I’ve witnessed that with an actual confirmed autistic character is Newt Scamander.
Obviously I don’t speak for all autistic people, and I’m very aware that many other autistic people have expressed dislike and criticism of the show - and I get it, I truly do. I do think the show isn’t exactly the best written (to put it nicely) and that it gives a very stereotypical representation of autism, namely “white boy/man autism”. I don’t want to bash the show too much because while I’ve seen complaints about it, I’ve also had some fellow autistic people say to me that they love the show and that they feel Shaun represents them - and that’s great.
I do want to express my discomfort about the fact that people have turned a scene where Shaun is having a meltdown into a meme. There is a very fine line between criticizing a piece of media for bad representation and then mocking autistic meltdowns - and I think a lot of neurotypicals are in fact just using it as an excuse to laugh at autistic people and mock us. It’s not just that scene either: I’ve seen people mocking clips showing how he stands, how he talks, how he interacts with people, and it very much feels like people just wanted a chance to make ableist comments about autistic people.
It’s also interesting that this show has so far had six whole seasons air, it’s got extremely high viewership, and yet it’s only now that people are taking offence to a scene that occurred at least four years ago. I know that Twitter has had a field day over another scene in the first season where Shaun at first struggles to understand why a trans woman is “she” (which, you know, is a whole other kettle of fish given that I’ve seen it claimed that autistic people are more likely to be trans/NB etc), and far right TERFs/bigots were using that scene as some kind of “gotcha!”… right up until it was pointed out that by the end of the episode, Shaun fully accepted the trans woman’s gender identity and used the correct pronouns.
Again, I’m not saying this was brilliant writing or anything, but it was several years ago and is only now being brought up, same with other scenes taken out of context in the show… Yes, autistic people have voiced grievances with it before, but were ignored - I don’t believe for one minute that the neurotypicals making the memes and being preachy give one shit about actually autistic people or care about us, because otherwise why were our voices ignored before? It’s only now that it’s been getting public notice for the trans episode that people are going “ohhhh this show sucks and is bad representation” as if members of the autistic community haven’t voiced that opinion for years. It just rubs me the wrong way quite frankly.
What I will say is that I’m tired of seeing people drag Freddie Highmore though. He’s a good actor, anyone who’s seen him in things he’s done since his childhood will know that, it’s not his fault if he’s given shit scripts to work with. I do also think Freddie means well with his portrayal, even if he’s (as far as we know) allistic and the fact he appeared in an Autism $peaks video (because of TGD/all the cast did it) - the man has zero social media presence whatsoever though and didn’t even know what Pokémon Go was, so I’m going to give him the benefit of the doubt this time and assume he truly hasn’t been informed about how harmful that organisation is. Or maybe I’m just going soft on him because seven year old me had an age appropriate crush on him eighteen years ago, who knows at this point?
I’m hoping all of this talk will open up a dialogue about the show and about the representation of autism, if nothing else.

Shaun x sister!reader - the best day
Tumblr media
No. 2 with Shaun Murphy and sister Reader who's excited? - Anon💜
2: “Why are you here?” “Because it’s Christmas Eve.” “So you came to the hospital?” “Well, you’re here, so of course I did.”
Walking through the doors, you rubbed your hands together as you made your way straight to the cafe.
It was your first stop, you were in no rush and you had plenty of time for what you wanted to do.
Grabbing yourself a hot drink, you sat at a table, setting your bag next to you as you looked around the decorated cafe with a smile.
You spent a while there, trying to warm up a little bit before you carried on to your destination.
Standing next to the desk, you set your drink down, checking your phone before looking around, waving at a woman who was passing.
“Hey sorry, do you know where Doctor Murphy is?”
“I don’t I’m sorry, if you wait here I can tell him you’re looking for. Can I ask you for your name?”
You smiled at her.
“Of course, I’m (Y/N).”
“If I see him I’ll tell him you’re looking for him.”
With that she left.
You knew she knew where he was, and she was going to ask him about you.
After all, she couldn’t just go around giving out details of everybody or where they are, she had to see if he knew you or if you were safe.
It wasn’t long until you saw the man you were waiting for walk over, hands in front of him as he smiled a little bit.
“Hello.”
“Hey Shaun, how’re you?”
“I’m good, I am working. How are you?”
“I’m good as well, a little cold though.”
He nodded a little bit.
“Why are you here?”
You grinned brightly at him.
“Because it’s Christmas Eve.”
He glanced at you before he looked away.
“So you came to the hospital?”
Laughing softly, you nodded and set your bag on the nurses desk.
“Well, you’re here, so of course I did.”
“Did you come all this way to see me?”
“Well obviously, I’ve got to spend Christmas with my brother!”
Opening your bag, you went through it and pulled out a messily wrapped box, holding it out to him.
“I know you’re busy, but open it when you can. I’ll be here or getting another drink or food.”
“Can I open it now?”
“Absolutely!”
You were practically bouncing with excitement as you watched him inspect the box before he set it down to start unwrapping.
“You’re bad at wrapping presents.”
“Come on I tried!”
He looked at you before he finished unwrapping it.
Picking up the book, he read the title before reading the back.
“It’s an old medical journal, I know most of it won’t be relevant today but I thought it was cool.”
“It has very old procedures in.”
“Yup, and who knows you may be able to use some.”
“They are not very safe (Y/N).”
“I know, but I know you’ll make them safe.”
He looked at you, holding the book out.
“Will you look after it?”
“Of course. Have you had your dinner yet?”
He shook his head, tidying the mess he had made before he stood there looking at you.
“Do you want dinner?”
“I do not like the food they serve here.”
“I made food, it’s in my bag.”
He walked over, peaking into your bag.
Shaun took the tub with his name on it, and he lifted it up to look through the bottom.
“You made my favourite pasta.”
“Yup!”
He smiled.
“We need to heat it up, come with me.”
With that he walked off and you ran to catch up to him.
You knew you wouldn’t see much of him, but when he was finished his shift in the morning you were going to make sure he had the best Christmas ever
