Doing that lol
HELP THIS IS SO REAL BAHAHHAHABA ; thank you for the request 🫶🫶 ; sorry if anything seems a little wrong, I'm kinda looking into if I have adhd but obv idk and I'm not diagnosing myself, but I obviously am not diagnosed so I don't know the full ins and outs and I know it's a spectrum, so uh yeah 👍 hopefully I did good lol
MCYT ; ADHD shenanigans

Tumblr media
TOMMYINNIT
he'll walk into your stream, sit down, look at your screen, then blankly stare at you when he realizes what you're playing
"Dude. are you streaming FNAF again?"
you nod with a smile "yupppp"
he spends the rest of your stream talking to chat and trying to scare you more
you're just talking about the lore and shit and he's loosely hanging onto it LMAO
if you're just like pacing around the house he'll look up at you like "bro you okay?"
will genuinely join in as well, he's always got the energy
he doesn't mean to enable like hurting yourself to a point, but once he realizes he is kind of enabling it he'll immediately stop
"sit down, here, skip leg day for once, focus on those noodle arms of yours"
"says you! the fuck?"
TUBBO
he'll walk into your bedroom for the first time in like a month and just see posters and little trinkets and merch of your new fixation and be like "christ, man"
"I'm a little hyperfixated"
"I see that. also considering the 150 hours worth of streams you've put into FNAF, yeah..."
he gets you a vr headset and buys you the fnaf vr games.
he doesn't understand how you have so much energy but it's whatever
"dude, sit down, your legs are gonna fall off, you've been pacing for like three hours! drink some water at least"
"tubbo, I can't! I have too much energy and I can't get rid of it"
that commences three hours of wrestling in the living room 💀🙏
RANBOO
let's you rant about your fixations and the lore and whatnot
I mean they won't deny that the Blair Witch Project video game is really good
they even buy you posters of the Blair Witch Project movie and video game (we don't talk about the movies after the first...)
even gets you merch off the official game site too (if that exists? I'm not sure istg there was merch tho)
they start to get a little fixated on it too considering they love hearing about the lore and theories from you and stuff
they even play it on stream and dedicate it to you
"thanks for the content y/n"
when you're running through the house, he'll race with you for a while before finding some other ways for you to release energy without making yourself sore
at one point he just gives you coffee that way you'll crash and burn after a few hours
I mean at least you don't feel like your legs are about to pop off your body
FREDDIE BADLINU
invested in the resident evil lore because of you
"I saw this and thought of you" AND ITS A LEON KENNEDY EDIT LMFAOOO
I mean yeah
loves hearing you rant about the games and everything, he could listen to you talk for hours
when you're all strung up on energy he also enables it without realizing at first
when he can tell it's more than just being energetic he'll help you find ways to calm down
if need be, he'll read to you, instant sleep I swear
or when he starts talking you'll be fully invested in his words
"yknow, Google listed among us as a horror game and I really cannot-"
NIKI NIHACHU
the amount of dead by daylight merch and the amount of money that you've spent on it is kinda concerning
but she loves listening to you rant about how the kill animations are so awesome and about new maps and characters and dlcs
I mean it's your current fixation, of course she'd listen to every single word you'd have to say
she even plays with you on stream a lot as well
when you're strung up on energy, she'll take you out for a run, you're like a dog on a leash though because she's not trying to lose you
"niki, come on! I wanna see the water snakes!"
"I'm coming, I can't sprint like you do, darling!"
QUACKITY
"of all the games, why is five nights at freddy's the one you're fixated on?"
he loves hearing you rant and explain lore and theories to him tho
genuine love language
he'll even play it on stream with you
"and the purple guy basically killed all the kids, and the kids basically scared him into the springlock suit and it literally killed him so he possesses that suit now-"
he'll just joke about the amount of energy you have
like Ranboo, will serve you coffee so you can crash and burn considering you end up begging him to help you

would you consider animorphs a greek tragedy/the characters traditional tragic heroes? if so, what would you consider their fatal flaws?
Ehhh, it's never gonna be one-size-fits-perfect to apply a stage genre from ~2300 years ago to a novel series with entirely different media constraints from ~20 years ago. However. To paraphrase Aristotle, a tragedy has to have a:
Basically decent and likeable protagonist for the viewers to stan, BUT
Your fave is problematic: they think they're too cool for the gods, BUT
At least they figure it out in the end, BUT
It's too late to prevent them from losing everything and/or dying, ERGO
The audience leaves going "man, I feel bad but kinda good? Like, that ending made sense but it was a bummer and I didn't like how my blorbo died there, and I dunno I got a lot to think about, three out of five stars" [catharsis]
So there are contemporary stories that fit the bill of Greek Tragedy better, e.g. a lot of horror movies. Almost every Friday the Thirteenth involves the characters being told outright not to transgress ("don't go in the lake", "watch the kids, not each others' butts," etc.), followed by the characters' arrogantly transgressing anyway, followed by a godlike creature (Jason Voorhees) taking a disproportionate amount of revenge on them. Similarly, a lot of survival horror movies cast forces of nature as entities that punish anyone stupid enough to disregard them (Jaws and sharks, Frozen and blizzards, Cujo and rabies, Open Water and open water), and have the characters be basically likeable people who still mess up out of arrogance and get killed real dead for it.
And I would argue that Animorphs doesn't fit the bill as well as horror movies like Blair Witch Project or The Ruins, because those latter examples involve experts (i.e. prophets) waving their arms and shouting "don't mess with this force of nature" as the protagonists walk on by to go mess with the force of nature, only to get killed by it. However, I also think that there are ways that Animorphs does fit the trope.
The characters are likeable: they look out for each other and their families, they tell funny jokes, they try to protect their planet, they risk their lives for their principles.
The characters are deeply flawed: they kill prisoners of war, they draw moral lines ("don't morph sapients without permission", "don't kill humans if possible") that they later trample over, they commit mass murder in the name of expedience.
The characters don't get happy endings: Marco gets a successful career that proves hollow, Jake hides at his parents' until he can't, Rachel dies, Ax dies, Tobias hides in a meadow until he can't, and Cassie... sort of does okay.
The characters (mostly) figure out their own flaws in the end:
When going into her last battle, Rachel says "Cassie thinks I'm fearless. Marco thinks I'm reckless. Tobias... well, Tobias loves me... By loving me, those two [Tobias and Cassie] would have messed everything up."
Jake tells Ax on the beach, after Visser One's trial, that "You did call my attention to the possibilities on the Pool ship. And when you did that I guess I should have thought, Well, Jake, it's a harsh, terrible thing to do, but you're justified because, after all, you're the victim here. But that's not what I thought. You know what I thought?... Die, you filthy worms. Feel the fear, Yeerks. Feel the pain. Feel the helplessness. [I] wanted them to suffer and the idea of them suffering and dying made [me] happy..."
Tobias's is subtler, but when watching the hikers in his meadow and says: "If they stayed another night she would play her flute again. Which shouldn't bother me. But if there's one great lesson to surviving alone, it's this: Don't lie to yourself. I was all I had, and I had to tell myself the truth, and the truth was that their presence bothered me." He doesn't say it outright, but he implies that he gave up everything to be alone and that he still gets lonely sometimes.
For Marco, when Jake interrupts him whining about his TV show with "Marco, you were bored out of your mind", Marco says "Yes, I was." Again it's subtler, but Marco is clearly aware that the things he wants are rarely the things he needs.
Ax never quite unlearns those glory hound tendencies. He knows he's not supposed to lead a boarding party, "But I was bored. And I knew the T.O. wouldn't argue: I wasn't just the captain or a prince, I was... a living legend." And then "You were supposed to want to stop fighting and go home to your meadow... At some level I did, too. But how do you weigh the sharp rush of battle against... watching your trees flower?" He loves glory a little too much, and he gets his whole crew killed for it.
For Cassie, her confrontation with Erek forces her to realize her flaw when she angrily tells him "Rachel and Tom are both dead... Thanks to you." When Erek shoots back that the Animorphs drained the Pool ship, she starts to say "Jake did what he had to do... We needed a div—" But cuts herself off, disgusted with her own rationalizing, before she finishes the word "diversion." Erek then spells it out: Cassie's fatal flaw is that she cares more about one life (Tom, Rachel) than 17,000.
Anyway, I think that some parts of Aristotle's idea fit reasonably well. But also that it's not a perfect example of the trope and that there are contemporary works that fit the trope better than Animorphs does.

hi sarah! if it’s not too much trouble can you give starter horror recommendations for a guy who feels some trepidation about the genre because i think it’s like, very cool and interesting and have been thinking about writing some horror stories but i’m also the easily frightened type so i was wondering if there’s a way i can ease myself in before working up to the super duper scary stuff?
yes!!! i will try to give you some variety of subgenres/subject matter but if you have like a specific type you’re looking for i can also add more recs based on that! but just in general:
•cloverfield (2008) is one of my all time favs and i think it walks the line of being scary but not like….disturbing. it’s not shield your eyes and grit your teeth type horror, it’s more like adrenaline and putting yourselves in the protagonists shoes and wondering what you would do in their situation. it’s found footage (it may or may not give you motion sickness so if you’re sensitive to rapidly moving camera work maybe watch it on a small screen or skip it) and i get full body chills when i watch it every single time because of how real it feels. despite all that, there’s very little up close shots of the monster and pretty minimal blood/gore.
•scream (1996) due to it being satirical and self-aware, a lot of the scary tense parts are cut by comedic moments and i think that helps a lot. i honestly think the scariest part is the opening sequence, so if you get past that feeling okay you’re probably gonna be fine throughout. there’s definitely injuries and blood but nothing i’d constitute as body horror, and again the movie likes to make little wink wink jokes which makes the tone pretty tame
•the cabin in the woods (2011) basically see above it’s also very self referential and subversive and also just like if you’re interested in horror such an amazing take on the genre, but it’s a little more intense than scream with the gore in certain parts
•poltergeist (1982) is considered a family friendly horror movie and i agree with that assessment <3 the silly little 80s practical effects make it hard to get scared despite the child actors absolutely slaying, and i think as far as horror creatures (villains?) go, ghosts and poltergeists and spirits are pretty chill
•the blair witch project (1999) is very iconic and like laid the groundwork for other found footage films, and luckily it is not very scary until the last like 2 minutes <3 and when it is scary, nothing gory/graphic is shown! for me the real horror of blair witch isnt even the witch, its the thought of being lost in the woods with no way out and the movie is just so realistic that i always start to panic a little on behalf of the characters. some people think its boring though! i dont i love it <3
coherence (2013) is not very well known but its (to me) the coolest fucking movie in the world. i think it has such a brilliant and original premise, and i’d categorize it as horror even though i consulted my mom and she thinks it’s more of a thriller. either way i highly recommend and there’s no blood or gore or anything like.....in your face scary? its more like a sense of dread that builds up over the course of the movie
they live (1988) is john carpenter <3333 and it’s pretty tame compared to other john carpenter movies. it’s horror but it’s also scathing social commentary and kinda action and again it has those 80s special effects so the scary little faces are less scary and more like...party city masks. its also referenced in a surprising number of other things (free guy feat. joe keery for one) and i think its a prime example of how horror can communicate such a wide variety of themes
and you probably already know about this but in case you dont: doesthedogdie.com has a comprehensive crowd-sourced list of potential triggers for every movie. the site does a great job including phobias/triggers that aren’t necessarily common and warning you if a movie has those, so it’s a great resource if you want to avoid certain subjects all together. happy horror watching <3

survey #063
If you could own your own Pokemon, which would it be? Probably like, Espeon. They're gorgeous and seem calm and overall cat-like. What is it that draws you to your favorite song/band/musician? I'm pretty simple with this, I'm just drawn to what sounds "good" to me. Have you ever had an embarrassing nickname? Not really. I mean I feel kinda weird in the very rare instance my mom calls me "Twinkie" (it was my childhood nickname; all her kids have sweets/candy nicknames, haha) in front of others, but it's whatever. What, in your opinion, is the most disgusting part of the human body? I'm like, aggressively disgusted by any genitalia, even though I try very, very hard not to be because it's an extreme overreaction and perpetuates ideas I don't support by making it seem like this big, huge deal and "gross," but I've never in my life been able to just move past the extreme "ew" impulse reaction I have. What has the ability to easily embarrass you? I couldn't even REMOTELY comfortably discuss how I RP and details about it if you're not Tez or Mazzy or past RP partners.
If you could give your best friend a gift, what would it be, and why? At some point I really, really want to get Girt a little statue/figure thing of his FFXIV character. He loves the game and has invested a load of time into it and I know he would be absolutely in love with the idea for a little room decor. What was the name of your second grade teacher? Mrs. Whitley. She was also my 5th grade teacher and overall one of my absolute favorites. Sweaters or fuzzy blankets? Big blanketssss. Ghosts or witches? I'm more drawn to ghosts, personally. Describe your ideal date. To name one I haven't recently, maybe like, a concert of a band we both enjoy. Do you like s'mores? I LOVE s'mores. What's an unpopular opinion you have on autumn? Pumpkin spice isn't all that. Are you single or in a relationship? I'm in a v happy 'n' healthy relationship. Do you like Christmas trees? I do. Do you prefer Halloween, Thanksgiving, or Christmas? While I enjoy the aesthetic of Halloween most, Christmas is overall my favorite holiday. Do you like trick-or-treating? I LOVED it as a kid. Stopped as a teen though solely because of societal expectations, lol. You have peculiar interests? The "weirdest" would probably be vulture culture, which is basically the use of dead animal parts to create art, like bones, wet specimens, taxidermy, etc. Are you crafty? I don't think I am, actually; I can draw all I want, sure, but I'm not a big crafts person. Tell us something random about you. Uhhhhh before meerkats, my favorite animal was dolphins. I had lots of dolphin stuff as a kid. Do you believe in the supernatural? I believe in spirits and their (limited) ability to interact with humans, yes. What's your favorite scary movie? I really like The Blair Witch Project (plus its sequel) and The Crazies. Do you have a comfort food? It tends to be ice cream. Are you in school? What do you study? I'm not; I'm in the process of looking into online photography courses offered by my local community college, though. Ma brought it up and it'd be something to do that I generally really like. Do you celebrate Thanksgiving? What traditions so you have? Yeah, even though the roots itself of the holiday are fucking garbage. My mom and I always go to my sister's place, where more family meets up for dinner. Do you have a Tumblr account? (If so, what is the URL?) I am literally too lazy to link it, it's steinstan. Have you ever had a crush on more than one person at once? Do you now? Yes, and no. Do you have mean comments that replay in your head and haunt you? YUP YUP YUP YUP YUP. Have you ever bought a designer purse? No, NOT interested in spending a ludicrous amount of money for a bag. What color was your senior prom dress? It was black. Would you ever consider a career in writing? Yes, I'd actually love to. Have you ever purchased a YouTuber’s merch? If so, what did you buy? My favorite shirt I own is one by Cloak, Markiplier and jacksepticeye's clothing company, but that's it. I would LOVE more YouTuber-specific merch, but I've never really asked for this stuff for holidays because I consider that stuff one of my "weird" interests that I have a paralyzing fear people will judge me for. Do you update your Facebook relationship status when it changes? Yes. Do you want your own house someday? I would actually really, really like to own my own place one day so I can do whatever I want to make it home. When you go to McDonald's, what drink do you usually get? Coke. Ever seen your parents make out? GOD NO. Were you raised in a religious house? Fucking tragically. Have you ever been asked for a nude picture? Not to my recollection, no. I think I'd remember that. Last person that saw you naked (can’t be yourself): My mom. Ever kissed someone half-naked? Yeah. Do you like bacon? Oh dude I love bacon. Do you have an annoying dog? No, Cookie is generally very well-behaved. She's always acted very unobtrusively and personality-wise is really the perfect dog for Mom and me. What was the first comic book you ever had an obsession over? I was never into comics, actually. What color was your first phone? It was a navy blue, I believe. Was your first phone a flip phone? Quite sure it slid, actually. If you’re a girl, have you ever had an embarrassing period story? I don't believe I do. What was your worst experience in high school? Just crippling depression. Do you ever use the n-word? Absolutely not. What is your phone background? My lock screen is an absolutely spectacular photo of Richard having a blast with his guitar w/ pyrotechnic fire entirely as the background, and my home screen is a skeleton doing the devil horns symbol. Have you ever gotten in trouble for using a phone in class? Nope, because I didn't use my phone when it wasn't allowed. Do you have any pets other than dogs or cats? Yes, a snake. Have you ever finished a whole video game? Oh jeez, plenty plenty. Grew up a gamer, man. Do you know anyone with a pet snake? Obviously myself, and Mazzy has them too! I might know more people, but not sure. What names do you like? To name some that come to mind quickly, Alessandra, Miquella, Amani, Justine, Evangeline, Chloe, Naomi, Damien, Severin, Vincent, and Luther. If you had to name your daughter after a Disney princess, which one? Um probably Aurora. What’s your opinion on poetry? I love it and have been on the brink of trying to write a new one for a while now. How much did your senior prom dress cost you? I have no idea. What dreams have stuck with you since childhood? Meeting/having physical contact with a meerkat. I also still REALLY want to see a complete dinosaur fossil display! Did you ever take your dog to school? Oh my god, I do remember doing this once with Teddy in the I wanna say 5th grade. I had permission to bring him in and have my classmates meet him. I don't remember the details really, but I remember he did so well and everyone liked him! God, I miss my boy. If you had had a baby in high school, what would you have named him or her? Alessandra for a girl, Severin for a boy. Has God ever healed you of anything? If so, what? No, but actual science has. What is the most boring church you have ever attended? They all bored me to fucking death whenever I'd go somewhere, but the one I grew up with, a Roman Catholic one, was THE. FUCKING. WORST. Mass always had such a serious aura full of rituals and I hated it. What is the most lively church you have ever attended? I don't remember. Do you find church fun or boring? So immensely boring that as a kid, if Mom decided we were going to go after Sunday school, I cried lmao. What do you hate the most about summer? THE FUCKING HEAT. Which part of your body is the most muscular? That... is a very good question. I have zero idea. Did you ever take Latin in school? For one semester my first year of high school. It was incredibly difficult and I quickly switched to German the next half. What is your favorite Japanese name? I have a bias towards Mi Nuong, having a character with that name. Plus is sounds beautiful to me. I really like a lot of Japanese names, though. Have you ever ran a cash register? Ugh, yes. Fucking never again. Do you think your mom is attractive? My mom is super beautiful and I swear her smile is the sun. What computer game did you used to play all the time? There were many, but there was this one called something like Amazon Trail 3 that I was obsessed with. Would you allow your children to date prior to 16? (assuming you want any) I would. Do you like salami? I love salami. Have your parents met your boyfriend/exes? Yep. Name something in your life that was a blessing in disguise: My breakup with Jason, really. Have your parents ever questioned your virginity? I know my mom has; my dad has never voiced any side of belief on this, and I don't want to talk about it with him. Do you find graveyards scary? No. Who do you consider to be the king of pop? How about the queen of pop? I really don't care, pop isn't my genre. When was the last time you made a pinky promise? Ha ha semi-recently when Girt made me promise to always tell him if I don't feel like watching something. When we hang out I truly am up for like whatever he feels like doing, I just like being in his presence, but he was concerned about boring me, lol. Do you think your parents know things about you that you don’t want them to? Mom probably does. Honestly, have you ever said a racist joke? Not to my memory and I certainly wouldn't have once I was at the age to have enough sense. I am never okay with racist jokes. If you had to be a school teacher, which subject would you teach? You know, I actually recently realized that with my enthusiasm for the language and culture and all, if I'm ever truly fluent, I'd be quite the dedicated German instructor. I'm not interested in being a teacher of any sort, though. As a child, did you ever get the chance to go to Disney World/Disneyland? Yes. What state do you live in? What’s the best aspect about this state? North Carolina, and like... nothing. I hate it here. The mountains to the west are pretty, though. Honestly it's mostly just this stretch where the coastal plains and piedmont meet where everything is just garbage. Are you someone who is really committed to politics in your area/country? I wish I was, but I'm admittedly not. I have strong opinions with what I do understand, but I absolutely do not educate myself on everything. Part of that is because I just don't care enough even though I should, but there's also the fact that this is an area I have a very, very hard time understanding. Like, information going through my ears just doesn't compute. Do you know anyone, personally, who is in an abusive relationship? Are you? I don't think so, and definitely not. When was the last time you were on a boat? Where did you travel on it? Many summers ago when I went fishing with Colleen, her husband, and her dad on a lake. Favorite fast food restaurant? Sonic. Are any of your siblings in college, or planning on going to college? No; both of my sisters graduated college, one with a Master's and I think the other a Bachelor's. Then there's me. Do you drink milk? If so, what’s your favorite kind? I do; I prefer chocolate most, but I do like normal milk, too. Not skim, though.

Might I please ask if you have an opinion of DRACULA? (Either the novel itself or the adaptations); having read both this novel and FRANKENSTEIN, I'm tempted to agree with the reviewer who wrote that one of these is a Classic and the other is actually Fun to read ... (-;
Tumblr media
(Art by Cinemamind)
I completely understand the sentiment of "one's a classic and the other's fun to read" and I don't necessarily disagree with it. I don't read Frankenstein for fun, I read it because it's the book closest to me and it's heartbreaking to think about and it's got one of my favorite characters ever in it and it's got a stake in my soul I gotta renew every year. Dracula, however? Dracula is a blast and it boggles the mind as to how every adaptation can be so crushingly lesser in nearly every aspect. My hardcover edition with annotations is one of my most prized possessions.
It's interesting that people tend to talk about Frankenstein and Dracula like Frankenstein was cutting edge sci-fi while Dracula was archaic and folkloric, when it's really the other way around. Frankenstein is the story of an arrogant dipshit rejecting modern science and thinking to unearth outdated knowledge soon blossoming into a vicious cycle of savagery, where as Dracula is the story of an ancient predator adapting and trying to take over current society and fought by a ragtag team of upstanding citizens using modern tactics to stave him off and eventually fight him, desperately struggling to stay ahead of the curve as he wisens to their tactics.
This book was really ahead of it's time in so many ways. I could easily see excerpts of it, particularly the Demeter journals and Renfield's story, taking off as internet creepypastas or found footage horror films. Dracula's a story about a group of characters playing detective as they update their blog entries about the coming of an initially incomprehensible horror taking over their lives. It's a story that could work regardless of Victorian or vampire trappings, and we know this because Blair Witch Project and Marble Hornets are some of the biggest horror successes of the past decades, all of which follow the same general idea, except in Dracula, they don't just discover the true nature of the horror, they also start fighting back and ultimately destroy it.
Dracula's obviously a great villain, that goes without saying. I don't actually tend to take Dracula seriously much of the time because I'm very fond of comedy takes on Dracula and vampires, but that doesn't at all diminish his impact in the original book. He's barely in the novel for much of it which makes his every appearence Count, and the atmosphere as well as the many, many forms he can show up or be suggested at really help solidify what an incredible presence he can be.
He's the strange ruler in a foreign country, he's the kooky old man with weird customs, he's the creepy house owner tormenting a hapless guest, he's a barbarian who lives in nostalgia. He's the wind on your window, a dog on the street, a bat in your windshield, a storm on your ship. He's a predator in every way possible, he's a handsome aristocrat, he's a tragic victim of his own monstrous nature, he's a demon who threatens to consume all mankind, he's the fucker who assaulted your loved one and has to go down hard by machete right now.
Even if we just threw out the 124 years of Dracula's history out, we'd still have enough material in the book not just for a great villain, but dozens of great villains and characters who could take just about any of these traits and run with them. And still, the thing that really, really stuck out to me about Dracula wasn't him, it was the other characters
Tumblr media
Art by Kiwi
Dracula's cast is so, so underrated, so unfortunately sidelined as a result of adaptations that only care about The Count and try to give him all the dramatic weight and characterization and sideline all the other characters as merely bit players. Stories that twist Jonathan into a useless fop or an active jerk on the idea that he's the "boring" one, that diminish Renfield's story into just being a hapless and insane goon of Dracula, that make Van Helsing the only character who's even capable of putting up a fight and make him a generic badass, that completely neglect Quincy Morris even though he's great and everyone who discovers him is aghast at discovering "holy shit there's a COWBOY in Dracula?" like yes, there is, and he's incredible and everyone should love him and everyone WOULD love him if only the adaptations remembered he exists.
Adaptations that completely sideline Mina when, and I can't stress this enough, she is the most competent character in the book, one of the greatest pop culture detectives, a wonderful and compassionate and incredibly strong and intelligent character and the main reason why they even managed to win against the Count in the first place, and arguably the closest thing the book even has to a protagonist or hero. I'm not gonna go too into it here but, even putting aside the sheer awfulness of adaptations that try and force a romance between The Count and Mina, seriously fuck off with that, why is it that pretty much every "official" adaptation has had considerably less feminist interpretations of Mina than the source material written in the 1880s? It's a complete travesty (and yes, I'm including LOEG Mina in this, anyone who likes the book and character could have done that concept better)
I enjoy aspects of Dracula adaptations, mostly regarding certain actors's takes on the characters like Bela Lugosi (the only saving grace of that movie, honestly, but rightfully considered the iconic performance), or Peter Cushing as Van Helsing. I very much enjoy the Dracula adaptation Orson Welles did because it at least tried to stay faithful to the book. But regardless of their individual quality, I don't have much to say about Dracula adaptations that try to adapt the book other than "WHY in christ aren't you just sticking to what's in the book? Do you not see how GREAT it is, all the great things about it that are just waiting to be rediscovered and loved by new audiences? STOP WHATEVER IT IS YOU'RE DOING WITH MINA FOR THE LOVE OF GOD-"
Tumblr media
So yeah I definitely got thoughts on Dracula. Utterly adore the book but thinking about how much of it's greatness has been lost in the adaptations kinda makes me a little angry. Of course, this doesn't extend to adaptations that tell different stories or just put Dracula into existing stories or reinterpret it. I love Nosferatu and Castlevania Dracula and Hellsing Dracula and Billy & Mandy Dracula and Sesame Street Dracula. Dracula's basically become a sub-category of monster in it's own right and there's no such think as too many monsters, or too many Draculas
I'm very glad that Dracula's public domain because it means not only can he just show up anywhere, but it also means that just about anyone can pen their own Dracula stories. Still, it would be nice if the other great characters of Dracula got brought along for the ride on a couple of those.

can i ask if you have any recommendations for horror films? im trying to get more into the horror scene but havent had a chance to watch any films until recently. anything goes, but i trust your judgement in terms of what classics and newer stuff are worth watching :]
sorry it took me a hot minute to get to this i was Going Thu It. but anyway its kinda tough to give solid recs to someone without like having an idea of their taste. horror movies are.. they vary pretty widely in like tone and content and something thats good for one person might be genuinely just uncomfortable for another, so take these with a grain of salt.
my favorite classic slasher is hands down the texas chainsaw massacre although i think halloween is also a really good place to start if ur interested in that sort of subgenre because chances are even if youve watched absolutely 0 horror content you will have likely come across like aspects of it already through pop culture. its considered such a staple of the genre for a reason and as someone who didnt even watch it until fairly recently, i think it holds up!
in terms of more recent work, once again theres a reason people hype up jordan peeles stuff as much as they do. i went to see a showing of get out with my mom who normally cant stand horror and she enjoyed it enough to give us (a much more like traditionally terrifying movie) a chance. both are chilling and fucking iconic.
if youre at all interested in found footage (which i know some people are gonna complain is overdone to hell and back and theyre not wrong per se, but i personally think its a fun immersive way to get into the genre especially if youre already familiar with like videogames and args that already play with this kind of framing) the blair witch project is again very good and so much a part of the culture now youll probably find yourself already familiar with some aspects of it.
but mainly i bring up found footage because if im gonna give any recommendations today i need to talk about the creep movies. creep on its own is a very strong film that takes a really simple concept-- what if there was just a really weird guy-- and runs with it. that being said, creep 2 is a masterpiece wholly unlike pretty much any other movie of its kind. theyre scary, darkly comedic, and for me basically the gold standard of what horror creators can aspire to even with a low budget and a very simple story.
anyway this is way too long now. tldr i can give more specific recs if i have a better idea of the kind of stories and scares you like, but imo in terms of classics: halloween, the texas chainsaw massacre, the blair witch project. in terms of more contemporary horror: get out, us, creep, creep 2. those are like the big favs at the moment at least.
good luck on ur spooky journey!

Survey #348
“nothing will be free  /  nothing will be done  /  black out the sun”
Do you have any famous relatives? My third or so cousin is the author of Not Without My Daughter, but she's not like a smash hit or anything that most people know. I really do recommend the book, though. It's a long read, but a beautiful, true story. Do you care about celebrity gossip? Nah. Have you ever failed a science course in high school? No; I was very good at science. What’s your favorite breakfast food? Cinnamon rolls. Does your house have a basement? No. No house I've ever lived in has had one. Do you like Hot Topic? Well duh. Do you think imagination is valuable? VERY! Just imagine how many incredible things wouldn't exist without it. What was your reaction to your first time falling in love? Unspeakably happy, and I felt like I was building a future with someone. I felt like I had purpose, which I should mention to anyone reading is a mindset to NEVER adopt. No one gives you purpose; you're born with it. How much weight can you lift at once? Ha, not a lot. When you have your own house someday, what color Christmas tree do you want and how will you decorate it? I want a black one with faux snow on the branches, then maybe red ornaments. Kinda look like blood dripping off. Sounds metal. Name three YouTube channels you’ve been loving lately. Lately, John Wolfe, The Dark Den, and Aim To Head Mix. Have you ever bought a designer purse? No. Do you wear jewelry often? No. What color was your senior prom dress? Black. Are you colorblind? No. Name the people you know who are colorblind. Jason's older brother is colorblind to two colors, but idr which. Would you ever consider a career in writing? I'd love to. What was your first favorite color? Red. What do you think about horror movies? I love them. If you love them, what’s your favorite? I really enjoy The Crazies and both The Blair Witch Project movies. Oh, and of course Silent Hill. Got any cool Christmas presents picked out for family or friends yet? I don't have the money to get anyone presents... and while I sometimes get ideas about something I could make someone, then it wouldn't be fair to the rest of my family if I don't make them something, too. What’s your favorite word and why? I really like the sound of "serendipity," as well as its meaning. It's just a pretty, nice word. Do you like to do craft projects? If so, what’s the coolest thing you made? Not really... I think the coolest thing I made was when I put the clay heart I made in Art into a shadowbox, and a poem I wrote was in the background. It was a gift for Jason. I remember working really hard on the whole process and being really happy with it. I don't want to know what he's done with it since. What’s one occupation you think gets paid too much and doesn’t deserve to? I don't know. What’s something you are currently saving money for to buy? Everyone knows about Venus' terrarium by now... Do you smoke/vape? If so, what brand do you smoke/what device do you use? No. Ever done drugs? No. Tell me one of your worst habits. Catastrophizing. I take a tiny seed of something potentially bad, and in seconds it's a damn redwood tree. And I do mean "in seconds." What’s a weird quirk you have that no one else you know does? I don't know, I don't have any particularly unique ones, I think. If you game, what type of headset do you use? I just use earbuds. Do you think you would be a good therapist? You know, it's funny, I've actually pictured myself as one a few times, given my level of understanding and empathy for people, as well as how deeply I want to see others succeed and spread the word that recovery from things like depression is very possible. I've never truly entertained the thought, though, given I'm quite sure I legally couldn't be given my suicidal past and mental illnesses. There is also NO way I could listen to so many people's suffering and manage to stay healthy myself, so, no therapist position for me, thanks. Have you ever been to a Chinatown? No. Do you prefer chunky or creamy peanut butter? Creamy, 100%. Do you stop to pick up heads-up pennies? No. Do your pets have collars? Describe them: Roman has an adorable navy one with a bowtie. Do you have any friends that speak any languages you don’t understand? Old friends, sure. What is something you want to begin learning? I want to improve my ability to perform what in therapy is called "opposite action," where you do the opposite of what your depression (or other conditions) make you want to do. It always helps me feel good, like when I draw even when I don't initially feel like it, but it's rough to really force yourself to do it. What is a food you find comforting when you are sad? Ice cream is my comfort food. What is a quote you find comfort in? There are really a lot, but none come to mind immediately, gah. What is one Tumblr blog you really appreciate? I actually haven't been on my main Tumblr in months, but oh my god there is a Markiplier blog called "lady-raziel" and she is FUCKING HYSTERICAL. The meme quality is A+. What is a comfort movie/show for you? When I actually liked watching movies, I enjoyed watching Silent Hill when I was down. That whole franchise just makes me so happy. What is a recent creative project that you are proud of? That I'm PROUD of, idk. I'm not that happy with the last drawing I made, and I haven't done any serious writing lately that I find noteworthy. What is a video game that you find comforting? Shadow of the Colossus is probably #1. I find it so relaxing while equally epic as fuck. The soundtrack is to die for, and after playing it a billion times, it's pretty easy for me to kinda breeze through and just enjoy myself. Do you know how to bake bread? If so, what is something you’ve baked recently? No. Would you rather live in the mountains, city, beach, or the forest? THE MOUNTAINS!!! Particularly in the woods IN the mountains! Are you closer to your mother’s or father’s side of the family? Mom's. I don't even remember anyone from Dad's. Have you ever been in a “perfect relationship”? I thought so. Have you ever lost a fingernail or toenail? No. Were you a Disney or Nickelodeon kid? I preferred Disney. Have you ever been inside a jail/prison? No, and I don't plan on it. Have you ever dated a guy with a beard, mustache, or goatee? Jason had a goatee usually. He'd go clean-shaven sometimes. Did you ever name your stuffed animals? I named every single one I got as a kid. Now I don't, really, unless they're really special. What’s the name of the person who cuts your hair? I'd rather not share, given her name is very unique. Do you like cheeseburgers? Yes, they're one of my favorite foods. Do you have a Flickr? Yes, but I don't use it anymore. Did you ever want to be a fashion designer? No. Do you drink milk? Yeah, I love milk. Where was your FB display pic taken? My room. Have you ever burnt your tongue like REALLY bad? If so, what on? Yeah; white rice. My dumb ass didn't realize it had JUST come off the stove. My tongue hurt literally for weeks. Have you ever gotten your legs waxed? No. Do you own any CLOTHES from Victoria’s Secret? Er, are undergarments not clothes? But I know what you mean. No. What are your grandfathers’ names? William and... I can't remember Dad's dad's name. Have you ever seen a snake in real life? Well yeah. Are you against seances? I don't know if I believe in them being effective, but either way, they seem like a bad idea. Even risking luring a negative energy/spirit to you is something I'd stay away from. Do you own any superhero shirts? No, just Harley Quinn ones, some with the Joker on them, too. I need to toss 'em though because I am like, violently against romanticizing their abusive relationship. I used to just like them as a story character couple, but I got to a place where it just seemed... wrong to "glorify" it by wearing merch and stuff. What band has the best guitar solos? Metallica, durrrr. Who is the biggest jerk you’ve ever met? Can you believe that would be my former best friend? Have you ever swerved off the road to avoid hitting an animal? I've never had an animal in my path. Have you ever grown your own herbs? No. Do you like kissing in public? If you're my serious s/o, I could care less, so long as it's a simple peck. I'm not making out in front of people. Do you think someone has feelings for you? I don't know. Do you want to be in a relationship this year? I don't know. I'm lonely and love feels amazing, but I need to get my life on track before I can be a good partner to someone and not just dead weight. Has anyone told you they don’t want to ever lose you? Huh, funny, he's the one that walked away. How long can you just kiss until your hands start to wander? Uhhh that would depend on how serious we are, where we are, and just what mood I'm in. What’s the sweetest thing anyone’s ever done for you? ugh What’s the sweetest thing you’ve ever done for someone? also ugh What’s your dirtiest secret? TMI AHEAD. Probably receiving oral while bare-ass naked on the chaise in the living room while we were home alone. Or having sex in my sister’s bed. Oops. Would you ever get lyrics tattooed on yourself? Yeah. I already do, anyway, and I plan on getting another. Can you photoshop images well? I'm decent at it. Where did you last drive to? Mom and I went to go get our Covid vaccines today. What’s the first verse of the last song you listened to? "I don't know what we're supposed to be, but I know we lost it along the way to something better, something so much more than pleasure that we seek, so blind inside to fill these holes left by these lies that we tell to ourselves as we manufacture our own hell." What do you hear right now? The aforementioned song: "BLACKOUT" by 3TEETH. What was the last thing you laughed about? This is so fucking immature lmao but when we were driving earlier, we passed a gas station that had a sign that was advertising Coke, but due to space limitations, it abbreviated to "2 liter Cok" and I cackled like a child. Mom laughed harder than I did. Do you know any gay people personally? Ye. What was the last thing that startled you? I think it was a car hoonking at somebody the other day. What was the last thing to make you even remotely sad? Today's been a kind of rough PTSD day thanks to Facebook. My old high school friend had her beautiful daughter, a childhood friend just got married the other day, another friend is due to have her baby in just a couple weeks... It's just weird but even more painful to know it was the life I once fantasized about with a guy that just dropped me and made a break for it. I hate admitting that there's this deep, deep bitterness in me about it, like he took my life away from me, even though that's of course very unfair to say. I don't want to talk about this anymore, so moving on with my day.

horror/thriller movie recommendations based on your fave Danganronpa 1/2 character
the series in general: Saw (2004, dir. James Wan) - i can’t give much of a reasoning for this as i haven’t seen it but the “punishment fits the victim” trope appears to be a thing in Saw?
Makoto Naegi: It (2017, dir. Andres Muschietti) - as much about the power of friendship as it is about a fear beyond all others. the premise is probably relatively well known by now for the fact that there’s a big clown in it. content warnings: clowns, unsanitary, implied incest and csa.
Sayaka Maizono: Psycho (1960, dir. Alfred Hitchcock) - this suggestion is an incredibly cheap shot, please forgive me. famous film, not sure if i can talk too much about the plotline without giving away the most important part.
Mukuro Ikusaba: Us (2019, dir. Jordan Peele) - doppelgangers show up to wreak havoc on an american family. themes of identity theft. much bloodier than Get Out.
Leon Kuwata: Scream (1996, dir. Wes Craven) - admittedly haven’t seen this either yet. i know, i know, i’m a fake horror fan. but i know that it was made as a sort of tongue-in-cheek homage to the tropeyness of horror films, and i didn’t want to put any movie too blatantly humorous here. i thought this would fit Leon.
Chihiro Fujisaki: A Quiet Place (2018, dir. John Krasinski) - monsters that attack based on noise terrorize a family. most dialogue is delivered through sign language. also has a really touching family dynamic, especially between the father and his children.
Mondo Oowada: Pet Sematary (1989, dir. Mary Lambert) - haven’t seen this one either, whoops. all i know is it’s about, like, bringing people back from the dead or something, and that it’s based on a Stephen King book.
Kiyotaka Ishimaru: The Stand (1994, dir. Mick Garris) - technically a miniseries, but i wasn’t really sure what other horror story fit him. it’s the world at the end in a final battle between good and evil, and nothing says Ultimate Moral Compass more than that to me.
Hifumi Yamada: Strangers on a Train (1951, dir. Alfred Hitchcock) - the whole “i’ll do your murder if you do mine” kinda hits for chapter 3 i think. i also remember his hostage being his sister, so he’d probably like the relationship between Anne and Barbara.
Celes Ludenberg: Crimson Peak (2015, dir. Guillermo del Toro) - there’s a line the main character says that’s something to the effect of how she’d rather be like Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley because she died a widow? that’s Celescore. content warning: incest.
Sakura Oogami: Hereditary (2018, dir. Ari Aster) - both in the way that her dojo is a family business and in the themes of being afraid of hurting your loved ones. content warnings: child death, car accident, decapitation, possession, drug usage.
Toko Fukawa: Rebecca (1940, dir. Alfred Hitchcock) - again haven’t watched or read the book on which it is based but the fact alone that it is based on a book? and it’s not directed by stanley kubrick’s book-ruining ass?
Byakuya Togami: Rope (1948, dir. Alfred Hitchcock) - based on a play which itself was probably based loosely on the Leopold & Loeb case, it’s famous in part for its protagonists being gay. also they have superiority complexes and think that the privileged few should be allowed to murder inferior people because they’re above morality.
Yasuhiro Hagakure: A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984, dir. Wes Craven) - i feel like this is closer to what his brand of horror would be, but also people not really believing that what’s happening is actually happening is kind of his m.o. too. content warning: i don’t remember if this is explicit in the original or not, but Freddy Krueger was a pedophile.
Aoi Asahina: Friday the 13th (1980, dir. Sean S. Cunningham) - again i just think this is closer to what Hina’s brand of horror would be, but also i feel like the summer camp aesthetic would be for her.
Kyouko Kirigiri: The Secret in Their Eyes (2009, dir. Juan Jose Campanella) - i don’t totally remember it but detective going off the rails trying to solve a rape & murder case. Very intense, but very good.
Junko Enoshima: Midsommar (2019, dir. Ari Aster) - gaslighting people into joining a death cult? yeah, that screams junko. content warnings: graphic suicide, drug usage, gaslighting, people on fire, nudity, sex.
Monokuma: Child’s Play (1988, dir. Tom Holland) - creepy toy carrying the soul of a murderer. still need to finish watching this one, other than “creepy doll” i don’t have anything to offer in the way of content warnings.
Hajime Hinata: Get Out (2017, dir. Jordan Peele) - reluctant to go too much into details because i wouldn’t want to spoil the film for those who haven’t seen it, but the experiment done on Hajime vibes w this movie. content warning in that this film is about racism.
Twogami: Vertigo (1958, dir. Alfred Hitchcock) - too many details would give away spoilers but the identity theft theme of the film fits for a guy whose talent is in identity theft.
Teruteru Hanamura: Halloween (1978, dir. John Carpenter) - had a hard time thinking of a horror movie for Teruteru, but Halloween (and 80′s slashers in general) have a tendency to punish the horny.
Mahiru Koizumi: I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997, dir. Jim Gillespie) - would it be too much of a spoiler to say there’s similarities between this film & what gets Mahiru killed in-game?
Peko Pekoyama: The Purge (2013, dir. James DeMonaco) - people using masks to enact what they feel is justified revenge on the one day of the year when all crime is legal.
Hiyoko Saionji: The VVitch (2015, dir. Robert Eggers) - based on colonial-era folk tales about witches. very atmospheric, features the same kind of abusive slut-shaming verbal assaults Hiyoko hurls at others. content warning for briefly implied incest, some nudity, and parents being shitty.
Ibuki Mioda: Green Room (2015, dir. Jeremy Saulnier) - still need to see this one; punk band tries to survive to the end of the night after witnessing neo-nazis commit a murder.
Mikan Tsumiki: Carrie (1976, dir. Brian De Palma) - another film based on a stephen king novella, and also a pretty famous story. a longtime bullying & abuse victim starts to lose her shit after she begins developing telepathy. content warning for some nudity, fire, and an abusive mother.
Nekomaru Nidai: Les Yeux Sans Visage (1960, dir. Georges Franju) - wasn’t really sure where to go with him either, at first, and settled on body horror considering what happens to him later in-game. a doctor attempts to find a new face for his daughter after she is left disfigured from an accident.
Gundham Tanaka: The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1921, dir. Robert Wiene) - a mad scientist claims his hypnotized ‘somnambulist’ can see into the future, including the deaths of carnival-goers. highly influential silent film, german expressionist so peak aesthetic.
Nagito Komaeda: The Silence of the Lambs (1991, dir. Jonathan Demme) - it’s probably well enough known for Hannibal the Cannibal being in it, but it’s worth noting he’s not the primary antagonist of the film. he is the most memorable part of it, and his psychoanalysis is what made me think of Komaeda. content warnings for gore, sexual harassment, referenced cannibalism, period-typical transphobia (period is the late 80s/early 90s).
Chiaki Nanami: V/H/S (2012, various directors) - a horror anthology film of found-footage type shorts, not shown in chronological order of events. i don’t really remember the contents enough for warnings, check at your own risk.
Akane Owari: The Blair Witch Project (1999, dirs. Eduardo Sanchez & Daniel Myrick) - don’t really have a good reason for this one other than “they all go feral, which Akane is seconds from doing at any given moment.” i think she’d dig it. no real content warnings to be had, the original found footage film.
Kazuichi Souda: Jaws (1975, dir. Stephen Spielberg) - i’m not even entirely sure i know what would make him like it, maybe just the mechanical shark? i think we all know this as the movie that made people double down on their hatred of sharks. i don’t particularly care for it, but it’s popular.
Sonia Nevermind: Perfume: Story of a Murderer (2006, dir. Tom Tykwer) - follows a would-be perfumer as he murders women in an attempt to create the perfect scent. in retrospect i probably should have picked something based on a real crime, but i still think she’d like this one.
Fuyuhiko Kuzuryu: M (1931, dir. Fritz Lang) - when the police fail to catch a serial child murderer, the criminal underworld steps up to take action into their own hands. fitting, no?
Usami: Trick ‘r Treat (2007, dir. Michael Doughtery) - another sort of anthology film that follows what happens to townsfolk when they don’t abide by Halloween traditions. i put it for Usami because i thought it was actually kind of cute, as far as horror films go.

Favorite horror/suspense/thriller film? (even if they're not necessarily one, but is still considered one)
Well, I’m not really into horror movies as most people can see, but I did kinda like the Blair Witch Project and how real it felt due to it being filmed like a found footage sort of movie. I also like the lore behind it and the way it was promoted.
I know that some people might not find it too scary since it’s intentionally made to be pretty cheap-looking, but it genuinely freaked me out when it came to certain scenes, especially the ending.

chilling at a coffee shop but i don’t have any schoolwork to do so i don’t know what to do with myself, here are some questions and answers
send me a fruit
peach:  do you have any piercings or tattoos?
i do i think at this point i have 13 piercings and 11 tattoos?? which is truly not that many at least for tattoos i guess that’s kind of a lot of piercings raspberry:  favorite flower?
i’m rlly not sure all flowers are pretty but i think i prefer like just plants to flowers, like succulents and herb plans and stuff. i have a tattoo of sage coffee and basil, so i’d say those are some favorite plants lemon:  do you have any pets? what are their names?
none of my pets live with me now bc they’re still at my parents house, but i have two cats named snickers and sunshine, and a bulldog named dallas
mango:  what is your trademark?
wow idk overthinking and always being five minutes away from crying??? funny story tho for literally 13 years i wore this black tattoo choker and never took it off that whole time so that was a trademark for a long ass time. now it’s probably like. purple hair. i guess passion fruit:  how would you describe your style?
so for like 2 years i’ve just been describing my style as “american apparel” bc a good portion of my clothes are all from there, and the ones that aren’t, still had that same sort of aesthetic. but now american apparel is CLOSED idk how much longer i can say that before that won’t conjure a concise visual anymore. but rlly it’s pretty simple. highwaisted pants, crop tops, solid plain colors, no patterns except stripes sometimes, a lot of army green  pineapple:  sexual orientation?
i used to identify as pansexual, but in recent years i’ve been saying bisexual a lot more mostly bc when i talk about it in real life it’s easier to just say bisexual bc everybody knows what that means than to try and explain pansexual, and since then i feel like way more comfortable with that label but im chill with either one. not to say they’re exactly the same but??? y’know. i’ve only had romantic/sexual relationships with men thus far but maybe one day the girl of my dreams will sweep me off my feet strawberry:  favorite desserts?
i’m way more of a salty food person than sweet, but y’know desserts are still always good. i rlly like baked goods a lot, like pastries and shit. plain croissants are one of my favorite things in the world, pumpkin pie bc wow fall i’m basic ok a lot of others i mean there’s really no dessert i don’t like  cherry:  can you play any musical instruments or can you sing?
here’s the thing for most of my life, singing was the one thing i always felt confident in saying i was actually good at. bc i really don’t feel like i’m good at a lot of things, and have always had those kind of feelings. i used to sing wayyyyy better than i do now tho lmao i took singing lessons for years bc i once planned to go into theater as a career path, so my voice used to be way stronger with a way bigger range that has sadly decreased from lack of use. but i mean i guess i can still sing pretty okay. ive played the guitar since i was 10, took lessons from 10-17. now i don’t play nearly as often as i used to, but break it out every now and then grape:  if you could take a vacation anywhere in the world, where would you go?
right now i really really want to go to the pacific northwest, like portland and seattle, and also go up to canada and stay in vancouver. vancouver seems like such a cool city i’m very into it.
banana:  favorite horror movies?
what a QUESTION. ok wow gotta break this down into sub categories i love horror movies and i think about this a lot. for like straight up horror that i love and think are legitimately good movies, american mary, antiviral, it follows, the vvitch, green room, creep (the mark duplass one), daybreakers, ginger snaps, the blair witch project, the silence of the lambs...for like, horror comedies, tusk and murder party & rlly if we wanna count it as horror since it’s about vampires, what we do in the shadows. for like. guilty pleasures/so bad they're good...all the saw movies, devil’s pass, silent hill revelation. and of course, my favorite sub category of all, horror musicals lmao. obviously repo! the genetic opera, both the devil’s carnivals, sweeney todd, i really need there to be more horror musicals tbh  blackberry:  is your life an action film, a comedy, a romantic comedy, or drama?
lmao it’s one of those kind of good kind of shitty coming of age mumble core indie movies. bc i mean rlly. art student, weird druggie friends, everybody is in fucky relationships, we go to waffle house a lot. it’s perfect  pomegranate:  when do you feel the most confident?
lmao also what a question. i guess every now and then i just have random days where i feel rlly good about how i look, usually bc i did something good with my makeup or put together a look i feel good about that’s different from usual, or just like am being blessed by god that day. i feel more confident with my friends typically than when i’m like somewhere alone. also rlly weirdly i probably feel the most confident about myself over all like...during straight up sexual situations. not like in the build up before when it’s like all rlly uncertain and you’re not sure if it’s gonna happen. but like. when you’re for sure certain the person you’re with is already attracted to you and on board with the whole thing and you're just like. ready to GO. i feel pretty confident then. which i always forget til i’m actually in that situation.  cantaloupe:  what are your parents' names?
good ol dave and mariann guava:  dark & dramatic makeup or natural makeup?
all of the above m8. like idk if this is specifically asking what i prefer to wear or what i actually wear more often. bc i mean most of the time, it’s relatively natural or literally just eyebrows and nothing else. most days if i’m actually trying to put on makeup, but don’t have a reason to be dramatic, i just do winged eye liner. but if i have an event or i’m just feeling rlly extra, i love to do more dramatic stuff like red eyeshadow and shit like that  tangelo:  if you could be any mythical creature, which would you be?
idk could i just be a woman with antlers. no other animal parts or anything. i just want antlers  plum:  favorite clothing brands?
rest in peace my sweet sweet american apparel. i rlly don’t know otherwise. i like uniqlo stuff, but haven’t gotten to shop there much ever bc there are no stores around me at all. american apparel was rlly my only brand loyal brand. i don’t know where to go now  coconut:  favorite perfume?
i’ve been using viva la juicy from juicy couture since i was 13 lmao  lychee:  satin or lace?
lace blueberry:  what do you want to dress up as for halloween?
hmmm that’s a good question too. i’m not sure yet. it’s only the end of april so i mean i have a lot of time to think, but i have no clue i should get on that apple:  what do you use more, tumblr or twitter?
probably tumblr, but i’ve used twitter a lot more in the last few months than ever just to tweet dumb things to my friends. i also rlly like seeing content from people i know/vaguely know irl more than anything else at this point, so i like twitter a lot for that. kiwi:  what's something that fascinates you?
uh wow??? a lot of things i guess. i’m pretty fascinated by like...specific niche subcultures?? which is a very vague thing to say but i guess like. there’s this scene in the city i go to school in (guess i live here now too lmao) that i’ve like kind of become a part of, but won’t ever be like as fully a member bc most of them grew up here and went to the same high school, and i find them so interesting. they’re all like kind of ridiculous and a lot of them are kind of pretentious but wow it’s fascinating. guess i’m just really fascinated by people that come from different backgrounds than me?? bc i came from such a like. small, concentrated type of environment from going to the same school for 12 years and being raised in a very religious type of climate, it’s always so interesting to hear about people who were raised completely away from religion and stuff like that. i like hearing about people’s childhoods and high school experiences and what their parents are like  watermelon:  do you have a job? if so, what is your job title?
lmao yes i work at a medical billing company and i think my official title is “medical billing clerk”  papaya:  what song describes your aesthetic?
this is also such a GOOD question wtf. but wow this is really hard?? i’m not sure. one of the first songs that came to mind so i feel like that means it must be somewhat true was off to the races by lana del rey. which rlly is a kind of aesthetic i’m into, like the gross dirty vibes of new york city underground, weird sexual tones, that kinda shit. and i h8 myself but i mean. repo! the genetic opera pretty much shaped a good portion of my aesthetic, so i mean truly the soundtrack describes that aesthetic, specifically zydrate anatomy and night surgeon cranberry:  favorite time of the day; morning, afternoon, dusk, or night?
i rlly like the morning for the vibes and atmosphere most of the time, but i rlly don’t like getting up for it. and it’s also kind of just...contingent on a lot of factors how much i like the morning vibe?? i always like the dusk and nighttime feeling so i guess truly those are my favorite times of day.  nectarine:  would you consider yourself an emotional person?
lmaoooooooooo yes. yes i would. way too much so i wish i wasn’t so emotional bc i’m truly a wreck orange:  do you have long eyelashes?
man i wish i have very average eye lashes  apricot:  what do you do when you're sad?
i mean i’m sad most of the time so what DON’T i do when i’m sad. but for real. depends on what kind of sad i’m feeling. a lot of times i’ll spend a lot of time in the bathtub when i’m sad. i usually try pretty hard to be distracted, so i’ll try to find someone to hang out with, or try to watch something distracting, but pretty much any time i’m alone and really sad, nothing actually distracts me. with people sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. sometimes i just end up telling them how sad i am, which also can sometimes help and i feel better, and sometimes just makes me feel worse for bothering them with it. basically what we can get from this is that i don’t really have any good, helpful coping mechanisms for when i’m sad, and if i did, it would probably improve my life greatly  star fruit:  favorite sea creature?
i honestly don’t know, i’ve never rlly thought about it. sea creatures are all pretty cool but a lot of them are also pretty scary so  dragonfruit:  do you drink alcohol?
yes but not that often. i like enjoy having like just a casual drink with somebody while hanging out watching a movie or something. i like mixed drinks and shit, but i’m not 21 so y’know can never actually order them. i very rarely actually drink like a lot with the intention of getting drunk, but at big parties, i’ll do that. even then i still don’t drink that much bc it doesn’t take that much for me to feel it lmao

horror sub-genres • analog horror
analog horror is commonly characterized by low-fidelity graphics, cryptic messages, and visual styles reminiscent of late 20th-century television and analog recordings. it is named "analog horror" because of its aesthetic incorporation of elements related to analog electronics, such as analog television and VHS, the latter being an analog method of recording video. analog horror could be regarded as a type of creepypasta.

“Power Rangers” and the glorious death of your childhood
Tumblr media
Power Rangers comes not to kill your childhood. Well, it kind of does. But in a good way! Or rather, not in the way you might expect. Think of it less as a killing than a reinterpretation. This alone will likely cause the truest believers of the chintzy ‘90s institution (which memorably combined recycled Japanese tokusatsu footage for its monster fights and freshly-shot footage with American actors for its on-the-ground stuff) to cry heresy and run screaming from the theater to the safety of their Nick At Nite programming blocks.
Call that an unavoidable cost of doing business, especially for the reboot business and especially for the reboot business of the almighty 1990s. The kids of that decade have grown into those pesky, proprietary millennials, and the general consensus among them seems to be that anyone looking to update the shows that got them through the Clinton years can only do so much, which is why recent remakes mostly amount to a rearranging of the (occasionally enchanted) furniture.
Of course, this negates the idea that the property being remade could, in the right hands, likely mean something very different to a newer generation of kids for whom the world is, indeed, very different. One cannot build a movie -- or a franchise -- on “remember when” alone, and if this the crew behind this sleek new Power Rangers hasn’t entirely done away with the sacred text, they’ve made it a point to give it a translation fit for the 2010s.
In other words, the basic premise remains the same -- five teenagers stumble upon an alien stronghold in their dead-end town and become intergalactic space ninjas -- but the focus has changed. The show dubbed the Rangers as “teenagers with attitude” and was content to focus on the first half of that moniker, but this movie, directed by Project Almanac’s Dean Israelite, turns its focus towards the latter. Our five heroes are now a band of misfits and weirdos that John Hughes would throw in detention in a heartbeat, and, in fact, that’s where we meet them.
The setting would seem like a cheap ploy to make the kids seem like outcasts, but the script does the extra bit of work to make sure they earn the distinction. Jason (Dacre Montgomery) is a washout football star under house arrest; Kimberly (Naomi Scott) is a cheerleader who’s embroiled in, of all things, a nude photo scandal; and Billy (RJ Cyler, far and away the best thing about this movie) is a bomb-making nerd on the autism spectrum. The punkish delinquent Zack (Ludi Lin) and the introverted, you-may-have-heard-she’s-gay-now Trini (Becky G.) show up a little later, and the quintet are quickly blowing shit up and running from the cops in a stolen van.
This, needless to say, is a decidedly different take on the Power Rangers, one that doesn’t venture far enough to be labeled “gritty,” but one that’s definitely grimy at the very least. It also, admirably, isn’t afraid to show the slow, arduous process by which the Rangers form their bonds. They start as tenuous allies at best and aren't even that nuts about each other (“Are we friends or are we Power Rangers?” one character asks), but by the end of the movie, when they have their big moment, it feels genuinely earned. (That’s a testament to the acting, by the way, which is far, far better than you’d expect or need it to be.)
The story, amazingly, even goes so far as to muddy the halo around the Rangers’ boss, Zordon. A floating head in the original, he’s embodied here by Bryan Cranston’s giant face, looking like one of those bed-of-nails toys you used to make a handprint on ('90s kids will understand). He’s given a new backstory in the script by John Gatins and an ulterior motive that the movie deploys in a well-played reveal at the halfway point. It’s a surprisingly solid performance by Cranston, whose reputation as the ultimate good sport will only increase once everyone gets a load of him in the one-take prologue that seems, of all things, to be inspired by Adi Shankar’s bonkers Power/Rangers short from a couple years ago.
Fear not, though, there is hope for those who prefer their youth amber-preserved. Minus a slightly updated story of her own, much as you remember her is Rita Repulsa, the cackling hag played in this version by Elizabeth Banks,  who’s doing some kind of magical blend of Linda Blair, the Wicked Witch of the West and Sunset Boulevard. If there is one drawback to this Power Rangers, it’s that it takes itself just a mite too seriously. She’s clearly in it for the fun -- and, yeah, maybe the paycheck as well, but girl’s gotta eat. (Also enjoying himself is Bill Hader, who voices Zordon’s lackey Alpha 5. Yes, he says, “ai yi yi.” Too many times, I think, but he says it.)
Of course, all this Breakfast Clubbin’ has to lead to the friggin’ dinosaurs, and the movie knows that this, more than anything, is that for which you have come. Accordingly, it kicks into a frenetic and kinda sloppy finale that does, indeed, break out the legendary Zords, the legendary theme song, and a Krispy Kreme product placement that’s so ridiculously funny it will soon assume legendary status as well. It’s a little too schizophrenically put together (think less the careful beats of Captain America: Civil War’s airport fight and more the constant kaboomery of a Transformers finish) to really work in the way the movie wants it to, but it’ll be diverting for newcomers and fans will likely recognize the spirit of the original in all this harmless chaos, if not exactly the letter of it. (That said: My one beef as a devotee? The new Megazord. No, no, no. Bring back that blocky masterpiece and leave my monster be.)
Admittedly, the movie goes down better while you're watching it than it does afterwards. It’s not perfect. But the effort is there, and Israelite tries, more so than most remake directors, to make the characters mean something they might not have before. Much like the ‘90s themselves, the original Rangers met the bare minimum for inclusion, if ofttimes in a backhanded manner (the team featured a black and Asian character, but they were the Black and Yellow Rangers, respectively -- it hasn’t aged well as a look). It was enough, I guess, to let people know they were worthy of consideration. But seeing this Zack converse in subtitled Mandarin with his mother, or Billy’s painful neuroses, or Trini’s genuinely affecting monologue about not knowing how to tell her parents about the true self she’s discovering is something that will resonate a lot more with kids for whom these issues are becoming more and more a facet of daily life. (‘00s kids will understand.)
So, where does that leave the ‘90s kids, who are the reason we’re getting this movie at all? Well, consider this: If you are a ‘90s kid, see it for the memory trip. (I grinned when they hit the theme song.) And if you’re a ‘90s kid with a ‘00s kid? See it for the memories they’ll make. In fact, there’s one wrinkle that turns out to be very meta when it comes to the remake game: In order for the Rangers to assume their power, Zordon must sacrifice his own. The metaphor is as apt as it is weirdly profound, and if Power Rangers doesn’t openly advocate for putting away childish things, it definitely tips its hand in favor of passing them along. In fact, those inheritors will probably be in the theater with you. Treat them kindly if they are. Your childhood is in their hands now.

Survey #438
“i won’t let you die, keep you alive just to remind you of what you are not”
What is your favorite card game? Probably Magic: The Gathering, even though I'm not great at it. I just ADORE the artwork, mainly. Is YouTube one of your favorite websites? Yeah, given I'm constantly on it. Does your mother have a sister? If so, what’s her name? Yeah, named Kelly. What are you doing tomorrow? I'll be going with Mom to the pool at the gym. She goes Tuesdays and Thursday, so I'm going to start joining her to help ease soreness from my exercise days. Would you ever want to go to Africa? It's high on my bucket list! I am DESPERATE to visit the KMP and photograph and pet and pamper the meerkats. :') Last time you went bowling? Not since I was on a date with Girt. Would you ever want to own a bakery? Noooo, I don't enjoy cooking of any sort. I'm way too impatient. Do you like to text? It's funny, I don't enjoy it as much as I used to. I make typos too much and autocorrect only wants to work at the WRONG time, it seems. I'd still rather text than actually talk on the phone, though. You want your next pet to be what? To be realistic, it'll probably be a western hognose snake. I REALLY want a tarantula, but Mom absolutely will not allow it for as long as I live with her, lol. Trust me, I've pestered her about it. Would you rather be a vampire or a mermaid? Eh, probably a vampire. Do you prefer white or black electronics? Black. Do you like Nerds candy? Yeah. Is your favorite animal something you can have as a pet? I could write a college-length essay on why you absolutely shouldn't, but it's sadly legal in some countries. Thankfully, not America. What was the last classic novel you read? Did you enjoy it? Oh yikes, I have no idea. Name three movies which have a soundtrack you really love: Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, Tarzan, and The Blair Witch Project: Book of Shadows. What’s the scariest video game you’ve ever played? I know it's super cliche, but I genuinely found Outlast terrifying. As well, SCP Containment Breach is a game I can't even play because the jumpscares startle me too much, lol. They're just too loud. Do you own any pet fish? What kind of fish are they? No. I'm not really interested in keeping fish as pets. What is the most irritating thing that a boyfriend or girlfriend has ever done to you? Tyler wanted to talk CONSTANTLY. Barely even two weeks in and he got all bent out of shape over there being days we just didn't text. Like dude, especially this early in a relationship, I don't want to talk 24/7. He acted like we were together for years or some shit. Like sorry I want alone time. That relationship was just a bad idea. Have you ever known someone who was in an abusive relationship? Sadly. Out of all of your friends/relatives, who would you say has the best vocabulary? Probably Girt. He's just in general very smart. When yawning, do you cover your mouth? If out in public, yes. If you had a garden, what would you plant in it? Would you actually tend to it, or would it wind up neglected & withered? I could NEVER maintain a garden, but if I had the motivation and tolerance for the heat, that'd be nice. I'd love mostly flowers, and a grapevine would be pretty! Plus some strawberries. Do you like peanut butter? Yeah, definitely. What about marshmallows? Yep. How do you roast your marshmallows? They have to be BARELY brown at all. Like it has to be the liiightest toast. Do you eat s’mores? Ugh, hell yes. I really want some now, thanks. Own a lava lamp? No, but I'd love a pink one. :( Or black. Own any sort of glow-in-the-dark room accessory? No. Ever done something sexual in public? No, I have common decency. Do you like the taste of squid or eel? I COULD FUCKING NEVER TRY EITHER. Slimy or rubbery stuff like that is such a massive no. Ever date anybody in middle school? Yeah, Aaron in the 7th grade for a few months. Did you like to get dirty when you were little? I think I did. Like I know I loved speeding through mud puddles on my bike as a kid. Own anything that has to do with dragons or unicorns? I have a lot of dragon decor. Ever wanted to be a vet? Yep. Ever written your number in a public bathroom or a school text book? If so, did anyone actually call you? No. What type of weapon do you prefer? Uh, none...? I don't like weapons. Is there something that you haven’t told anyone that you actually would like to tell someone? No, not really. Would you rather watch a full season of American Idol, or So You Think You Can Dance? The latter, by far. I used to love that show. I really enjoy watching dances. Have you ever worn boxers? Pretty sure no? Last hickey was from? I've only gotten to that point with one person, you can figure it out. Have you ever put a kick me sign on the back of someone? No, that is so rude. Are there any inappropriate pictures of you anywhere? No. I've never taken an inappropriate picture. How many times do you tend to sneeze in a row? Two or three. Karma; believe or don’t? I don't believe it's a thing. I wish it was. Ever changed a diaper? Once. Or maybe twice? No plans on ever doing that again. When you see anything smaller than a quarter on the ground, do you pick it up? I don't even pick quarters up, really. Can bald guys ever be attractive? Um, yes? Do you like hugs? Yessss. Would you ever donate blood? Yeah, I have before. I'd just have to get better about drinking water so I don't faint. Are you keeping a secret from someone who needs to know the truth? No. Ever had the opposite sex over when no one was home? You make that sound so scandalous, lmao. Yeah. What is the last song to make you cry? "Another Life" by Motionless In White. Have you ever kissed someone in the rain? Yeah. Have you kissed someone with braces? No. Are you anyone’s first love? I don't believe so. Anything happen to you within the past month that made you really happy? I'M LOSING WEIGHTTTTTT. :') The gym is paying off! Is there a person of the opposite gender on your mind? That's kinda a permanent thing. He's always there, even if only in the back. Who was the last person to wink at you? My cat, ha ha. Did you parents know what gender you were before you were born? Yes. Are any of your really close friends pregnant right now? REALLY close friends, nope. Are you for or against inter-racial relationships? ... You know it's 2021, right???? This never should have been controversial. Have you ever been addicted to something unhealthy? Well, there's caffeine... When the holidays come around, do you watch holiday movies? No. When was the last time someone insulted you? What was the insult? I don't recall. Do you say “Happy Holidays” instead of “Merry Christmas” in order to avoid offending people who don’t celebrate Christmas? I honestly just say "merry Christmas." Have you ever made/played with a sock puppet before? Yes. Have you ever seen a waterfall (aside from in a fountain or other manmade things)? Only small ones. Are you a frequent sufferer of heartburn? Yes; I actually have a prescription for chronic heartburn. If I don't take it, I'll get heartburn to the point I come near tears. How many different colleges have you gone to? Three. How much stress can you handle? Ha, not a lot at all. What is one thing you thought you’d never do but have done or are doing? I'm 25 and feel like I've just... wasted so much, and I continue to. I never thought I'd make it to this age and to have gone so short a distance in terms of being a successful adult. Have you ever disowned a friend or family member for their beliefs? I've stopped being friends with people, yes. Do you ever feel like your life is too boring or predictable? It 120% is. Do you think you will die happy? To be honest... I think no a lot of the time. Do you like looking at pictures? Yeah. Are you a submissive person? Very. Do you believe the dead can have connections with the living? I do. What are your views on the death penalty? I support it in extreme cases. Once you prove to be a thorough monster that deeply endangers other humans... you don't deserve life. We as a society have to work together, not destroy one another. Do you like horror movies? Why or why not? Yeah! I like the thrill of them. Would you ever be able to become a vegan? No; I am FAR too picky with my food. I want to be vegan, but I just wouldn't survive. What was your favorite toy as a child? I had a whole story based around some plastic dinosaurs, alligators, deer, and Pokemon figurines. Who was your first best friend? What is your favorite memory of/with them? Are you two still friends? Brianna. I don't know what my favorite memory is... We made a lot. We're Facebook friends, but we don't talk anymore. Would you rather hang out with someone who is always high or someone who constantly wants to get drunk all the time? High, I guess. Drunk people I think get sloppier and, in some cases, angry. The (few) high people I've been around have just been chill and friendly. How did you meet your newest friend? I'm not entirely sure who I consider to be my newest friend. The last time you kissed someone, were your arms around their neck? I don't think so? I'm pretty sure I was just hugging her around the waist. You have to get a facial piercing, what do you get? I've mentioned how I wanna get my nose re-pierced in multiple surveys. Do you straighten your hair? No. When is the next time you will see the person you like? Who knows, dude. I really want to be able to walk for two minutes without feeling like I'm dying before I go to an airport again, and even more importantly, even as a fully-vaccinated person, I want Covid to chill out before I travel again. And who the fuck knows when that'll be since people don't want to listen to goddamn professionals. Did you get to sleep in today? I actually slept through my alarm and was late to gym today. :x Your first dog? I was born into the family with a collie named Trigger, but she passed when I was a baby, so I don't have any memories of her. We got what I want to say was a Rottweiler mix named Angel at one point, who I consider our first family dog, but she was born with that disease that some puppies have where they just... die. Who I consider MY first REAL dog was Teddy. <3 Stood loyally by my side as my furry son and most devoted friend for around 13 years. Do you prefer mint, citrus, or cinnamon toothpaste? Mint. Are you one of those people who are always cold? No, I'm always hot. Have you done anything sneaky lately? No. Have you ever had feelings for someone and thought “This is the person I want to be with forever”? Yeah, twice. Do you keep notes, drawings or letters that people give you? Of course!
