it's 2AM and everyone's asleep - can i talk about how cool the whole "each time a celestial primate is born an anomaly happens" thing is??
because since it's so ambiguous in JTTW, it's fun to just play around with that, like other media has in the interpretations in the other 3 like.
i just think it's COOL because Wukong's eyes pierced the sky and alerted Heaven -- what other cool things could happen? and Macaque's was so.
Originally, it was going to be "And when you were born, the entire moon went dark." but that couldn't happen for a variety of reasons. The anomalies have to affect something, but it can't be lasting. It has to be something that gets the attention of the divine in a way that they immediately know "hey, something's going on."
and with MK's, it's sooo MUCH, that it drew the attention of everyone! Because, comparatively we have 1) a bright golden light, 2) a shadow falling over the moon, 3) all the stars flashing brighter for a few seconds, 4) an earthquake that shakes all the realms PLUS golden flowers blooming on the trees.
the fact that there's TWO parts is super important. I wanted that to be a showing of MK's power but also to show his nature as the celestial primate of balance. Because the trees bloomed gold in every realm to highlight his influence and duty, but the earthquake speaks to how powerful he is, how that power has to be carefully maintained or it could spiral out of control.
because I kind of just thought about the nature of the anomalies, too. Wukong's being that bright light and it piercing Heaven just makes me think of his title about being equal to Heaven, how he wanted to be recognized and respected and treated as a divine. that craving for attention.
Macaque's is subtle, a "blink and you miss it" type anomaly because it happened so fast, but it's noticeable in a way like "wait, what was that? the moonlight faded for a second" it's sneaky, it's not outright asking for attention...it's making itself known, but keeping to the night, stalking the shadows. and obvs. the moon itself being linked to the tides, Macaque being born from seafoam. It's neat!! just the symbolism that's associated with water -- wisdom, patience, restoration, guidance. it suits him so well.
Can't talk about the third one for Little Star too much, but the stars FLASHING brighter for a few seconds? all that burning gas just... getting HOTTER and more intense, lighting up the night sky??? attention grabbing for sure, but also intense. exciting, captivating, thinking, perhaps, that something wonderful is about to happen, but then it fades...
it's fun to think about it link them to their characters.

Dunno if this is controversial but the idea of “tonal whiplash” ruining things is the worst storytelling criticism idea since the monomyth. If you can’t get invested in a story or characters because of some jokes in a serious setting, or because things go from one emotional vibe to another quickly, then you don’t deserve any stories ever and I’m killing you with hammers right now. “It breaks my immersion” you have a babies brain. You are enjoying fiction but you can’t enjoy it if you’re reminded that it’s not real and someone lovingly crafted it for you? DIE.
Worst of all this discourages people from having fun with their stories in a way I absolutely adore. Your criticism is bad and you are depriving me of my tasty tasty stories HOW DARE YOU

s6e5 spoilerz!!
actual post talking about the episode YIPPEE!!! I LIKED IT!!! for the most part! i’m gonna start with the junk i didn’t like, cause there’s not much of it and i need to get it out of my system. for starters the erm. incest plotline. i’m honestly not sure why the writers have such a tendency towards this stuff. usually they seem to be pretty smart with reusing jokes or plot threads, but this just. like aside from being uncomfortable and weird to watch it just makes me think “do you not have anything better?”. why is this the safest plot line to fall back on in these recent seasons? i also hated the tiktok references at the beginning. i think i generally just hate any sort of pop culture references because they tend to become dated very easily/quickly while also doing nothing for the episode, aside from ruining any kind of immersion. AND MORTYYYYY justice for my boy. they are excluding him on purpose !! WHY!!!! i can understand he wouldn’t have worked very well with this episode, but this season seems to really favor either Rick or Literally Any Other Smith. but ummm next week’s promo had morty in it so im holding out hope guys! here’s how morty can still win!
ok anyway now that i’m no longer harboring any deep rooted hatred... THE ANIMATION!!!!! it was very cool, especially in fight scenes. something i noticed a lot was rick’s hair and suit/tie moving as he twists and turns, and i thought that was such a nice detail. it’s really simple but it added lots for me. AND THE JUMPS!!! i love his extending limbs, especially near the end of the episode where he jumps around on a bunch of boxes and moves kind of like a slinky, SOO neat. my only gripe is with the cold open, where he eats his noodles with tube arms. i dunno, felt kinda weird and unnecessary. small thing though. summer and morty in the beginning were also surprisingly endearing, and it has made me realize my desperation to see more of those two hanging out.
OH BUT JERRY AND RICK’S DYNAMIC!!!! i loved them in this episode, and i liked how it was kind of continuing s5e5′s development(kinda of neat that they’re both the 5th ep of their respective seasons). they’re both kinda warming up to each other, and it’s cool to watch this petty, sarcastic and, at times, surprisingly functional friendship. like when they talk in the vent, jerry is genuinely upset and rick offers some mild level of comfort by trying to crack a joke. and when they find the monster and jerry says he’s not sure what’s going on, rick just explains it!!!!! which okay yeah is also just to feed the audience necessary info, but i think the fact that rick doesn’t throw any insults really shows his development(also autistic infodump moment teehee). kind of off topic, but the scene w/ jerry’s second transformation made me wonder what his parents think of rick. like they see/ know he does some weird wacky shit, but like ... how much do they really know? or care? from what we’ve seen of them, they appear... pretty neutral. “oh well our son’s father in law is a scientist, no biggie,”. which is interesting to me. kinda wanna see some proper lengthy interactions between the grandparents. also rick joking(???) about fucking jerry’s mom made me laugh. okay alsooo i’m pretty sure i saw someone mention this, but in order for rick’s “you will make a friend” fortune to come true he would also have to consider jerry his friend as well B)) very cute.

Atari 2600 Chronicles 1980 #5 - Night Driver
The more early racing games I play, the more I realise that Super Bug was an almightly fluke when it comes to my enjoyment of them. Every single one that came before or after has not been my cup of tea, to say the least. Might be my fault considering i'm not using the right controllers for the job. I dunno.
Now, at least Night Driver brings something new to the table, it's a home console take on the German game Nürburgring 1 from half a decade ago. It's major claim to fame is that it simulates a 3D effect by letting objects get larger as they 'come closer' in your view, on a road determined by what I think are meant to be pylons. First time since Star Ship since i've seen it attempted on 2600, and it's a fair bit more convincing this time around.
The draw distance is easily the game's greatest weakness unfortunately. Considering the speed you're going at, *especially* if you flick the difficulty switches to increase that, you can hardly react on time to what is coming and therefore you crash. A LOT. There's oncoming traffic that gets in your way at the most ridiculous times too. Making corners at the higher difficulties is a near impossible task as a result, even slowing down when you know one is coming has been unsuccesful for me.
Once again, it could well be that the game does get better with a paddle controller. I am considering getting the 4-in-1 paddle package and it does include Night Driver (and Breakout which is also due a re-review). Counterpoint to that is, I have seen some videos about it and according to the comments, even back in the 1980s, people have struggled to get to grips with the tougher tracks and would prefer to play the beginner track or the randomly generated one, which I would agree with. Disappointing to see that it is not just my skewed perception on the matter.
The Verdict
Graphics (5): This game would've scored so much better if you could actually see what was coming. The traffic looks well detailed and the 3D effect is fairly convincing once you get 'into the groove'. It doesn't matter in the end of the day, you speed past the extra details in no time flat and the immersion is ruined if you collide with a... pole, pylon, sidewalk, you know, the things on the side of the road. It looks weird to have a violent explosion happen by a rectangle.
Sound (5): BEEP BEEP. BEEP BEEP. BEEP BEEP. BEEP BEEP. That's your soundtrack if you play with traffic warning signals ON. Turning the warnings off only makes it more likely that you smash yourself out of contention for a high score. That's not amazing game design. The driving and explosion sounds are precisely nothing new, though I don't see how they could've improved on those at this moment in time. I got annoyed pretty quickly.
Fun Factor (4): Better than Monte Carlo as it at least attempts something new. It's a shame it's all a shambles as crashing is so goddamn easy and completely kills your momentum. A game that is meant to be super fast slows you down mega often, how ironic. Track 1 is so simple that you essentially end up doing the same exact things over and over again for 99 seconds, and that is if you DO manage to avoid bashing your car to bits. That's the best one as you can briefly experience the raw speed this game has on offer. Missed potential and a half. Don't even bother with tracks 2 and 3 if you aren't hyped to go slow in a fast game.
Longevity (5): That leaves the random track and the core concept to pick up the slack and... we're reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeally past the point where getting points for distance travelled is any good for a seperate title. I could see high score chasers having a brief go at it if they are blessed with masterful reaction times, maybe? The random track is a cute idea and can be oooookay for 5 minutes to see if you can have a string of luck with the corner selection. You need to stretch the definition of longevity extremely thin if you want to get your money's worth.
In Conclusion

My prongsfoot hc is actually really simple. They were each others first kiss, for practicing of course. But with the time they realize it's more than just platonic or brotherly love. James realizes first, bc he grew up in a loving household and when he is in love he is the all or nothing type of guy. Sirius on the other hand never really knew true love until he found it with James first. He's already overwhelmed by being loved as he is platonically. So he takes more time to figure out that this love literally could reach another level. I don't really know how they realize and how they confess, but what I know is, that nothing really changes. From all characters of the fandom Sirius and James are the ones with true soulmate potential. I could imagine that when one realizes and he confesses it's like 'fuck, I don't know what to do, we can talk about everything, but I can't talk about this, bc it's about you and it's killing me bc I don't know how to act around you anymore' but when it's reciprocated it just happens like it never was different.
I dunno this might be really lame and average thought but I love them so much.
And it's not that they are the one and only ship for me. I'm as well into wolfstar or Jegulus. U know ship them all idc. But they are really special and true to me. And normal! For me they are just normal u know? Like what I love about the thought of prongsfoot in a romantic way or when I read fics about them is that when they finally figure out they're more to each other than friends or chosen family, they act so natural. Like nothing about kissing each other the first time or whatever is strange to them. It's new, yes. And of course they are hell of excited, bc when you're in love you can't stop your body from reacting to those feelings. But it just feels right. And once they took the first step they just fall with it. When they make their first experiences they can laugh bc they don't really know what to do and they can say it out loud without hesitation and it doesn't ruin the mood bc they're still James and Sirius. And I love the thought that these two blokes have the most healthy relationship ever. They know each other better than they know themselves, they observe each other, they accept each others flaws like 'I know you are like that sometimes and you have issues with this or that but I've got you. Take your time and I'm here.' and they would also be like 'I already know that but thank you for telling me that I'm an assohle sometimes. I will work on that and you already made a better person of me.' when they struggle with anything, like each others bad habits they would do anything to make it work out bc neither of them could ever imagine being without each other.
THIS!!! EXACTLY THIS!!! I AGREE WITH YOU SO MUCH OH MY GOSH!!!
yess it’s just like nothing even changes. I think I responded to my last ask with a head cannon so much like this that I love. Like it just kinda flows, there’s no awkwardness or big changes they need to adjust too. It’s not even weird for the people around them because they’re still exactly the same they just get to kiss now!
They’re so special to me too. I love them so much. Like I love wolfstar and Jily and jeggy and like so many other ships too, I’m big on rarepares and that as well, but prongsfoot is so deer to me (see what I did there?!). I love them so much, and it’s probably the demisexual in me but FUCK I ADORE THEM IN EVERY ASPECT!
It is not really lame and average, thank you so much for sharing anon because I completely agree. I love that we share that headcannon! <3
The only difference for me is that I think sirius recognises his feelings first. As you said, James was raised with love and is very deeply immersed in all that good crap that it just doesn’t even occur to him really. He just knows he loves sirius as a super close best friend and doesn’t put any more thought into that. He’d do anything for sirius, but his parents taught him that you feel similar ways for anyone you love so why would it be different? He just remains oblivious for a while.
But Sirius? It drives him crazy. He notices immediately because what the fuck how is he in love with his best friend and also a boy?! The thought has him so anxious but whenever James is near he just looses all anxieties and melts into him. James doesn’t take long to figure it out, I imagine Peter or Remus or someone would make a teasing remark about his crush on Sirius or something and he’d be like OH!!!
I do love how you perceive it though, and it definitely makes so much sense. Them in anyway makes so much sense to me :)

Feeling angry abt aini and cant sleep heres a rant lol, want to get my thoughts out
Still not over how unecessary aini was. The first game ended in such a lovely way for all (well most, sorry Pewter) of the characters, and while i do have some issues with it (The lack of Mizuki's importance in the true route) I do understand why some of the things weren't done. However, aini kind of trampled over a lot of the worldbuilding from the first game and destroyed so many of the themes as well. It ruined character development and comepletely threw out important relationships and destroyed the ones that did matter. It added things that dont make sense when you look at the first game, everything with Mizuki, everything with Boss, a lot of stuff with ryuki, bibis whole existence, Kizunas whole existence, Amames age retcon and then proceeding to put her into a creepy relationship, making Gen and Lien exist and acting like theyve been Date's chums for a while when he really WOULDNT be friends with them when comparing them to the likes of Ota, who he didnt like very much until he got his arc played out. A lot of the lore with the psync machine was also just weird. I know it wasn't ever confirmed in the first game that Date was the only one with an AI-Ball but with how he and Aiba were treated and the fact that people can psync without them the thought that other people might have them never occurred to me because it doesnt really um. Make sense isnt the right term here but, it doesnt "make sense" that they would just rip out employees eyes and replace them (even if abis is morally questionable) Cloning and gene experiments for imortality also comes out of nowhere because they wanted to make THAT plot twist and then the FRAYER STUFF? I HATE The frayer stuff omgg it makes me so mad i want to rip someone to shreds, and the tokiko stuff too like. I dunno I very much dislike when media takes the "meta" route and says the whole thing is a game, it breaks the immersion of the world completely for me. I also hated the timeline jumps. And the whole spoiler toggle, why make a sequel if youre going to have that its just pointless and harms the game. ANYWAYS This whole post to say I do not want a third game, it would very likely connect to the other 2 which would suck because it would be building off a shitty sequel. And even if it WASNT connected to the other games i would kind of be even less interested because like. Idk. Aitsf is a very character driven story in the first game at least, everything is tied to Date and characters and development, it would really suck for a third game to just, switch the cast (that was already butchered mind you) So truly, i do not want a third game I can only see myself hating it. HOWEVER. A datomi dlc......

Some thoughts on Dystopia Daily aka Dan's Last Attempt At YouTube.
"[Dystopia Daily] may not be daily" - Weird but ok.
"I am finally just gonna give the people and the algorithm what they ask for"; "I am here to create some fucking content (...) my way" - So which one is it, their way or your way?
"I would like to open each episode of "Dystopia Daily" with a monologue about the times that we live in. Something topical, personal, controversial, sexual maybe, I dunno, whatever." - So which one is it, rambling about the world or rambling about yourself?
"I dunno what I wanna do with my life because I don't know what I want." - You're a rich 31-year-old man, not a helpless teenager. Get off the internet, get intensive therapy, and get yourself together. Find hobbies and a job that actually fulfil you.
"More attention? God, please no." - Why are you still a public internet personality then?
"Money? Yeah, I've been ruined by stupid leftist YouTubers and Twitter accounts. And now I'm some bloody, low-key socialist that can't live without the guilt." - Get off the internet, leave your bubble, and use that money you feel guilty about to do good in the world.
"Is it just sex?" - Your sex jokes stopped being funny 5 years ago. Stop.
"after having my dreams disintegrated by an uncaring corporate cog in the machine, and thusly relearning how to be cripplingly depressed for a while after I literally wrote the book about looking after your mental health..." - You had to face rejection. Welcome to life. You're also a hypocrite, cool.
"The problem with everything I aspire to do with my life off social media is it has to be on someone else's terms, and their timeline" - Again, welcome to life you privileged dumbass. Do you think you're the first and only person ever who faces challenges and has to make compromises with other people and still gets disappointed every now and then? Who do you think you are?
"Every day, I am tempted to just go live in the woods, but you keep asking me to come back, trapping me in this liminal hell where I can neither fully follow my dreams or just frolic in the forest and finally be free." - Don't shift the responsibility. Go live in the woods if you want to, no one's trapping you. Stop acting like a martyr. Your fans will be fine.
"What I wanna know is what happens after [burning out]?" You either (1) quit for good, (2) reinvent yourself and your act, or (3) continue to spiral while the world is watching. I can think of several Youtuber examples for each option, and right now it looks like you're on the way to #3.
"I have developed a total phobia of social media, which as someone who is reliant on two apps to live is a bit of a fuckin' problem."; "I feel like I cannot tweet without…"; "On Instagram, my problem is…"; "I really dunno where to go from here" - Get help for your social media addiction and get off the internet.
"I am afraid to upload anything unless it's a fuckin' feature film"; "I have somehow pushed myself into a corner where I can't create a clip unless I got some kind of bomb to drop or trauma to mine for content."; "I care way too much about what people think and what it all means." - It means you need to grow thicker skin or get off the internet and get a job where you aren't exposing yourself to millions of people.
"have I just let various paranoias mutate unchecked and trap me in a prison of my own toxic thoughts?" - Probably.
"I am in terminally online rehabilitation, just trying to learn to shitpost again and find some serotonin somewhere. So this show here is a immersion therapy." - No, you should definitely try to find serotonin elsewhere. Offline. Actual therapy, and hobbies and work that have nothing to do with the internet.
"They say the best way to face your fears is head on. So I am here and I'm queer and I am just gonna force myself through the tears."; "I just wanna show the world and show you that even when every part of you is screaming not to do something, sometimes, you should just go for it" - Sometimes, the fear you feel is there for a reason and you should listen to it because it's trying to protect you. Again, stop being a martyr.
"[We're All Doomed]'s a show I made to just give me something to head towards to save my own life" - If this isn't a cry for help, I don't know what is.

So, my thoughts about the Octopath II demo now that I’ve played it.  Note I’ve only played with Ochette and Castti, since I wanted to really complete exploration and stuff in the area rather than push to start a third character.
Cut for length and minor spoilers...
Can we just all gush about how the fact that not only did Yasunori Nishiki continue to write character pre-boss themes that seamlessly blend into the boss fights, but he made it so if you change Day to Night the theme seamlessly changes for that, too?  It helps with immersion since the music shifts aren’t so jarring between these moments.
Atmosphere is one of the things I love about the original Octopath Traveler.  HD 2D is such a wonderful style, allowing for the beauty of pixel graphics I loved in my childhood games but with modern touches to give it more depth.  Just the details in its environments...lush jungles, crumbling ruins, sandy beaches, haunting caves.  And while I only experienced two of the eight characters’ prologues, I have seen people’s videos and the official trailers to know there are more great environments to come (Thronè’s slums look fittingly dark and dreary, while I adore the snowy winds Osvald’s introductory area shows).
The battles are definitely even better than before.  Having Latent Powers linked to Breaking and taking damage (two things that’ll happen easily) is amazing.  Special attacks like Ochette or Hikari (from what I’ve seen).  Agnea and Osvald’s look to be based on the Divine Skills of their OG Counterparts, both very useful (I mean Sealticge’s Sedation saved my ASS in Ophilia’s final boss).  And while Castti’s use of Concoct ingredients without using them up seems like little, it’s definitely a good time to pull out some big attack or to get the party back on their feet.  So a variety of different things with great effects.
Adding to this, some skills are different between games, though that is easy to see if you noticed two of the Latent Powers are based on Divine Skills.  Ochette doesn’t have Rain of Arrows or Arrow Storm.  I didn’t see Last Stand in Castti’s skillset.  I mean, the locked skills might be missing things from the first, but still, it lets the jobs you know and love play slightly differently while keeping their themes.  I’ve also already seen a video on getting an inventor based class that can be accessed from Thronè’s starting area, so there will be new ways to play as well.
Do enjoy some of the QoL changes to the jobs I’ve played with.  Like having Castti’s ingredients each have an affect but you use two at a time (I healed both HP and SP while fighting her boss, for example).  Or Ochette having a chance to autocatch a defeated monster and turn captured ones into food (that can be used with her Befriend Path Action at night, Trade with her town since they don’t use money, and possibly other things down the line such as Quests...but we don’t know that for sure).
Additional Path Actions...nuff said!  More ways to knock out rent-a-guards to get to loot or blocked areas.  Another method of getting extra NPCs in the party.  More ways to filch items, something I did A LOT of if anyone remembers my Octopath liveblogs from 2018.  Even when you change up party comp to do other chapters, or level people up for said other chapters, you have more options at your disposal.
From what I’ve also seen, some characters in their intro areas have NPCs in the party that they can control.  Nice!  There were definitely moments in the original I wished characters could have come with me and helped but the plot wouldn’t let me take them even if they were helping (like Earhardt in Olberic’s final chapter).  Dunno if NPCs joining and helping for a chapter will continue on later, but it does give some depth to the early chapter of some characters before they set out on their own.  Of course, neither Ochette or Castti had a companion as I spent all my meat on new armor so I couldn’t Befriend outside of the scared kid and Malaya was busy treating the town...

Stray first reactions: it’s wonderful, until...
Early-game spoilers up to first non-feline NPC.
Reached B12 and I gotta... uh... the game up to this point has been a very good experience. (Linear and Skyrim-physicsy, but otherwise good. Cat animation ranging from good to excellent.) However, the game with the addition of B12 is so far... really not?
Ugh. I don’t know. Judging by the achievement names, I feel like by this point the player is meant to be feeling lonely. Maybe that’s some neurotypical shiz. I wasn’t. Quite apart from the fact that I cut my teeth on Ecco 1&2, this game asked me to play a cat, so I have been playing a cat. I’ve been knocking things off ledges, miaowing demandingly at every door I come across, and generally enjoying myself.
The buildup to meeting B12 is perfect. Very foreshadowy and ominous, with all the Maneki Neko references. I was all over myself ready to meet an AI in a ruined world. I was thinking Rain World, New Vegas... you know.
And... so B12 appears and immediately dresses you (HISS), which is funny as hell because your cat flops over in protest and creeps around as if you’ve put deadly concrete on its fur and generally remains 100% characterised as a cat. B12 itself, though, is... just... really annoying? It steals the controls from me every few seconds, which is a cardinal sin oh my god don’t do that, and it says dialogue (it suuuure does say dialogue), but it’s not talking to the cat. It’s talking past the cat, perhaps at the player or the general surroundings, and it’s just rambling about itself. And I don’t? really have any reason to care? about its lame amnesia plot hooks? I’m a cat???
There’s no VA; it’s just voice bips with no variation. Obviously that’s saving money for localisation, but it means there’s no voice I can connect to -- no literal voice, no characterisation voice. The nonverbal communication earlier, with street lights flashing on and security cameras following me and responding to me? Exquisite. Being abruptly weaned on to English text is a huge let-down. The mystery’s gone. The dialogue isn’t well written. It’s characterless, stale and cliched. It’s honestly really surprising and a quite unpleasant transition. Plus, I’m a cat. I don’t understand language. I don’t understand objects, so the immersion, already stretched by my having to find power packs for things, is good and lost now because the game is still presenting me as controlling the cat.
Cats aren’t tool-users, you see; they’re people-users. They miaow, and then a servant does things for them. I feel like “demand things” would be a way funnier system than "use object on environment”.
I dunno. Feels like an intended emotional beat badly misfired and my immersion and independence were yanked away. I’ve saved and quit for now and am hoping I’ll find it less annoying next time... but as it stands, the opening section of the game was a great experience, and I’m kinda concerned that it might just have been ruined.
(also see self-reblog in which I try to put did more clearly with examples)

Hello, dear friend, my writer to writer question/discussion this week is concerning 'person' and 'tense'. In other words, what is your preferred tense to write in if not the narrative tense, and where do you stand, for example, writing in first person, or even second person?
Gotta go with narrative tense, all the way. I don’t generally care for reading/writing in the present tense, because it feels very… I dunno, very “telling a funny story at the water cooler.” It sort of ruins my immersion and makes me hyper-aware that I’m being told a story. The only exception to this rule is when present tense is used to communicate an altered mental state: drugged, dreaming, pumped full of adrenaline, overwhelmed… something like that. Even then, that’s to be used sparingly IMHO.
As for POV… I am one of Those Snobs who believes that first or second person should ONLY be used when there’s a valid reason. I have yet to find a use of second person that I’ve enjoyed; in my opinion, its only real use is for self-insert, which 1.) I don’t care for, and 2.) could just as easily be accomplished through first person.
Now, first person has some good uses. I’ve read some great short stories in first person. It’s an amazing tool for withholding information from the audience until a key moment, or putting blinders on the reader so they don’t even realize they’ve been influenced by the narrator’s personal bias. I’ve read multiple first-person stories where we get to see the protagonist/narrator’s gradual descent into madness, and get pulled in right along with him (I even wrote a couple of these back in college). I read one where the audience is led to believe that the narrator is going to assassinate some corrupt person in power, only for the reader to learn at the very end that it was Santa Claus.
What about you? What are your thoughts?

For the ask game: 🥳 🎤
I hope you'll feel better soon 🙃
I do feel a lot better now, thank you!! I so appreciate your concern and your ask—thank you for sending 💖
🥳: What always cheers you up when you’re in a bad mood?
- Writing out all my feelings in an angry or anxious Notes-app rant. Usually, it helps me to put words to what I’m feeling and get the buzzing, swirling thoughts out of my head and onto my screen.
- Listening to music. Especially if it’s really loud. Sometimes I listen to the same song on repeat, especially if it’s been known to comfort me (more on this below), but it also really helps if the music is a playlist I’ve curated to have all the songs in the same or similar key signatures that flow into each other cohesively. In fact, the process of making that kind of playlist also makes me feel better! Which brings me to:
- Doing an activity to distract myself. If I’m just sad and need a pick-me-up, reading or watching Netflix—generally silly and fluffy sitcoms, romcoms, or anime—works well. But if I’m angry or anxious and the thoughts are swirling around and my brain is going mmmmmmmmmm like an anxious little microwave, I need to do something that fully immerses me and leaves no room for my mind to wander back to “oh god I’m gonna ruin my life and flunk out of everything and everyone will hate me”. What works well for this is drawing, making playlists, or writing a string-quartet arrangement of a song I really like (maybe one I have on repeat to comfort myself!). If I come up with more things, I’ll add them here.
- Sorry to get all “blorbo from my shows” on you, but—watching Cowboy Bebop. Since I’m so obsessed with it, watching it is generally an immersive enough experience that it can successfully take my mind off the Anxiety™️. (The tags have a list of my favorite episodes to watch when I’m sad—I originally had them written here, but they were taking up too much room.) I swear to God, once I was really sad and my roommate walked in to see me watching Cowboy Bebop, while wearing a Cowboy Bebop shirt, with my Cowboy Bebop toys. That was a hard day. But honestly, when I’m sad, just immersing myself in my current obsession/special interest—whether it be Cowboy Bebop, Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Great Gatsby, or Star Trek—usually does wonders to make me feel better. Just being in the presence of The Thing will bring me joy.
- Being with my friends. Usually I like to be alone when I’m upset, but sometimes I need them as a sounding board for my problems/feelings or just to hug them. Just asking my friends for hugs, and the fact that I have friends who are happy to give me hugs upon request, feels amazing. 10/10, highly recommend. (Unfortunately I can no longer do this since I’ve come home from college and my friends are across the country…and Internet hugs just aren’t the same.)
🎤: What album or song is currently on repeat for you right now?
I already answered this in this ask from @wheredotheducksgo, but I don’t mind answering it again—especially since I mentioned listening to songs on repeat as a thing I do to make myself feel better! The two songs that generally really help with this are Roaring 20s by Panic! at the Disco and Everybody Talks by Neon Trees. I dunno what it is about either song, I just really vibe with both.
And I may as well take this opportunity to dump some other songs I’ve recently been listening to on repeat, as Spotify’s “On Repeat” playlist helpfully tells me: What Planet Is This?! by SEATBELTS (my all-time favorite song in the entire Cowboy Bebop soundtrack), Dance Macabre by Ghost, Shape Of My Heart by Sting, Period by CHEMISTRY (yes I’m a weeb shut up), Last of the American Girls by Green Day (there was a time when my entire “On Repeat” playlist was Green Day’s album 21st Century Breakdown with the occasional Cowboy Bebop piece sprinkled in), Good Life by OneRepublic.

My writing/reading pet peeve is two things:
1. Physically writing Y/N. I dunno why I just don't like it and find it ruins the immersion
2. When people write speaking with 'blah blah blah' instead of "blah blah blah"
The extra little tics matter to me!
i see what you mean about the y/n i try and avoid it unless i really really have to but it makes me cringe sometimes eee
NOT THE SINGLE QUOTATION i hate that too like please please

i really like how the level 99 villainess anime jumps straight to showing the storyline and basic characters of the otome game instead of filling the first episode up with loads of exposition... i dunno for me the exposition being right at the start ruins immersion for me

With that skillset you're character is gonna get her ass kicked. No offense.
Oh no, that's legit what I was going for XD
One thing I do have to give Skyrims skill system credit for is that being able to train any skill you want at any time without having to have a stat threshold just to use it DOES make it easier to roleplay character development.
At the moment Rook DOES have weapons. Mainly a wooden club added by the immersive weapons mod, though recently I gave her a mace. Though I'm not sure whether to keep it? Tbh the idea of her using exclusively lightweight weapons kinda fit with her squishy scholar concept while still giving her some weapon experience.
I don't mean this in a sense of her never using a mace, but more that the metal might be too heavy this early on in her adventures in skyrim? Like, she got from Solitude to Whiterun in two days (might look at mods that make the days shorter. If only to make traveling between cities take longer? Might be a bad idea tho), and then spent several days in Whiterun saving up money to hire Jenessa as her bodyguard. Not a lot of time to build the muscle needed to weild a metal mace. If I stick to one handed weapons maybe a dagger if she has to have metal weapons but who knows.
But no, yeah, Rook is a character designed to rely on followers and companions. I gave her skills in things like smithing, enchanting, and speech specifically because I imagine back in Cyrodil she had to get mercenaries and the like on board with escorting her and her coworkers into ruins all the time and being able to offer them a free chance to have their weapons and armor tempered and maybe even enchanted would mean they'd demand less pay for the job.
This aspect of her character may change over time given how rough Skyrim is, and with her eventual discovery that she is Dragonborn, an explicitly warrior-like legendary figure. The change from just generally needing protection from bandits and wildlife and the like to being targeted by literally DRAGONS may also influence her desire to begin training more in weaponry. Though, gameplay wise, her strongest suit in combat is still going to be her Restoration and Alteration magics and later her training in one handed weapons. (I downloaded the Train and Study mod to make this process more organic).
Her relationship with her companions and hired muscle changes too. Before it was just a professional relationship. A matter of gold and an exchange of services, but traveling skyrim and collecting allies, learning their stories, and knowing that any one of them could die on any of their adventures begins to change her from someone who needed to collect bodyguards and more into a genuine leader of a mercenaries, advneturers, and heroes.
Plus the followers and stuff are kinda essential? I'm playing Legacy of the Dragonborn and in order to successfully roleplay that I'm gonna need a number of mods to adjust existing quests, and justifying serving other factions that dont quite compliment her build and character. So, like, I'll want a follower who could plausibly join up with the companions in order to justifying doing that questline, for example.
I've heard of the protentious mod that lets you play multiple characters but I dunno if that's something i really wanna use to mess with my load order.
Beyond ALL that shes not going to be able to avoid getting beat up a bit. I added the wounds mod, so Rook is walking away from a lot of combat encounters with injuries even if she isn't the one doing a ton of damage.

thinking abt how being a young queer closeted teen in tumblr fandom space in 2013-2016 was in many ways deeply destructive to my self-image as a queer person bc of the largely unchallenged homophobic undertones of attitudes like "destiel is fun to talk abt on tumblr but dont bring it up to the actors. its very inappropriate and makes them uncomfortable." like. alright well as a 14 year old i just went ahead and absorbed that and now i worry abt making my cishet friends uncomfortable if i so much as bring up queer issues around them, much less my own attraction to men outside of a crude joke. thinkin abt the homophobia i internalized at age 14 bc of posts equating mlm relationships with deviancy and sin. the hypersexualization and fetishization of mlm relationships. these are all things that have been happening for forever (and obviously not just in fandom spaces) but its crazy to me that a space that was supposed to be queer-friendly was the space that instilled so many fucked up ideas in me at such a young age abt how i should think abt my own queer identity.

Better late than never?? Supposed to post on the day itself but of course I couldn’t. This is my rushed contribution to the prompt: domestic mixed with black knight&princess.
ShinRan Week Day 6
Prompt: Domestic (+ Black Knight&Princess)
Words: ~2.5k
.
.
“Not just once, but twice! Who was it that saved my life again? Oh, unnamed knight with the black cloak, if you will grant me my wish… Please take off that dark mask and show me your true face!”
“If that is what, uh, the princess wishes, I shall show you my sorrow- sorrowful? - face under this moonlight. Oh wow this is cheesy.”
Ran leans on the arm of the couch, bound script covering her resigned face. If she had a hundred yen for every single complaint coming out of this detective’s mouth, she’d have enough to buy two entrance passes to Tropical Land for each day of the week, plus snacks and drinks.
“I went here because I thought you’d be a more immersive practice partner than ‘tou-san. You are worse.”
“I’m sorry, princess, if my mom being an actress ruined your expectations of me.”
“Oh, for sure. And otou-san doesn't destroy the scene by dropping nonsensical comments. And lie on the couch while reading the script. So he’s better by a lot.”
Shinichi props his body up, eyes rolling sarcastically before throwing a look at the lady on the edge. “To be fair, you came barging into my house so early on a Sunday. This is justified.”
“Shinichi, eleven in the morning isn’t early.”
With a stubborn grumble, the detective flops back into the cushions, script on his lap sliding to the floor. “ ’M tired Ran, long case last night, let me sleep.”
“Please, you’re my last option! School festival is in less than two weeks, and I can’t possibly ask Araide-sensei to spare time on a weekend outside of our rehearsal schedule when he’s busy working—”
The lightning speed Shinichi jolts upright causes Ran to cut herself short. “Araide-sensei is the cloaked knight?”
“Yes, didn’t I tell you?”
“You didn’t.”
“Really? I-” she pauses, delayed in taking in the curt iciness of his response when he was so apathetic five seconds ago. On anyone else it’s clear what that tone implies, but she’s never heard it on him.
“Do you have a beef with Araide-sensei?” she asks.
“A beef?”
Ran arches an eyebrow, skeptic. Shinichi meets her gaze, eyes slightly thinning before glancing away, cheeks crimson.
“I mean— Why Araide-sensei? Shouldn’t he be busy, I dunno, being a doctor, than being a fictional knight or something.”
“All the guys in our class were too shy and declined, so Sonoko asked Araide-sensei when he happened to come in for a checkup. He agreed so easily! Would you believe he’d taken a lot of lead roles in plays when he was a student?”
“And that was fifteen something years ago.”
“He’s also good at things like emphasizing lines and handling a woman!”
“Anyone can- What?!”
“Stop being a sourpuss Shinichi, especially when you’re the first to decline.”
He looks at her quizzically. “I did?”
“You don’t even remember?” Amidst the faint pink on her cheeks, disappointment etched on the way Ran’s lips curve to a small pout. “You were the first Sonoko asked... You were so quick to turn her down, she said.”
Astounded by the revelations docking in his brain all at once, Shinichi struggles to recall the conversations he had exchanged with Sonoko the past weeks. None stands out. If she had included Ran’s name in there, he would remember instantly. But Sonoko didn’t. Suddenly, the floodgates in his mind open.
If he finds out later on about the plot and the cast, he’ll definitely find a reason or two to sulk, if not object. Whether Ran is partnered with someone else or Araide-sensei doesn’t matter, for as long as it isn’t him. Him who she’s positive would outright reject her offer to act as a prince because why would he? In any case, god knows Sonoko omitted Ran’s name on purpose for this.
The sly woman has stirred something up, and she will proudly take the front row seat on his reaction she was so sure he’d make.
Not saying Sonoko’s predictions are right. This is just how she thinks. And he won’t react the way she expects he will. She is not right.
Not. Right.
Sonoko, yaro...
“Stand up, let’s do this.”
“Huh?”
“You want immersive? I’ll give you immersive.”
Left with little time to process as Shinichi pulls her by the hand, Ran drops her script on the floor. The sudden shift in character is unbelievable. How can someone so sleep-deprived turn into someone this enthused in a span of a breath?
“But first, let me…” He leaves the room, and Ran picks up her script, still quite lost. Whatever she said earlier must have triggered something, and she’s torn if she’ll ask once he returns but considers the possibility that he may break character. Not gonna risk that. He said he’ll give her an immersive practice, and it’s oddly unexpected, but she’ll take it. This is good. After all, she needs him as the knight.
Wants him as the knight.
“Sheesh, Ran, stop…” Shying away from her own maidenly thoughts, Ran flips to the designated page, scene, and line, rehearsing as she waits.
Some minutes later, Shinichi reappears, holding his script and something else. Of all things she would expect him to own, a blue fancy Columbina mask adorned with elegant silver and royal patterns wasn’t one of them.
“Mom has these things, okay,” he explains, putting it on. Ran isn’t sure if she wants to laugh or tease, but she does neither when she gets a glimpse of him with half of his face covered, and she catches her breath at the sight.
Standing against silk red curtains and brilliant glow of afternoon sunlight, he really does seem like a mysterious knight…
“Don’t laugh, idiot. After doing this for you. Wear this,” he says, and Ran zeroes in on the line of his lips because she has nowhere else to look at as he places a small barrette tiara on her hair. Doesn’t matter what he says, what they wear, even if they fail to match the daintiness of the mask and tiara. Shinichi with this on makes Shinichi as the knight much more vivid now. And Ran as the princess...
“Sorry!” She claps a hand on her warming cheek, pulls back a dumb smile she doesn’t notice she is wearing. “And I— I wasn’t laughing!”
“Still smiling creepily though.”
“I wasn’t being creepy! Geez. Anyway! Page-”
“Page 27, Scene 8, Line 10. Got it.”
After some short blocking instructions, they drop their scripts on the couch, and begin.
“Oh, unnamed knight with the black cloak, if you will grant me my wish… Please take off that dark mask and show me your true face!”
“If that is what the princess wishes, I shall show you my sorrowful face under this moonlight.”
Two steps forward and he removes the mask, and time slows down. She’s seen the same face a million times yet this time, her heart leaps like she’s laid eyes upon the most handsome face in the universe.
“Might—Might you be Spade?” She carries on, taking everything she can to maintain composure. “Long ago, you were banned from this land by my father… but now you’ve become the prince of Trump Kingdom...”
It’s nerve wracking, the way he’s strikingly still, eyes laden on her, either waiting for her next lines or admiring how beautiful she is with the tiara, she isn’t quite sure. The mask is gone, but he isn’t breaking character. Meanwhile, she’s trying her darned best to stay as Princess Heart of Bridge Kingdom.
“If you have… not forgotten about our childhood promise, then please…”
A nervous lump forms in her throat as she wraps her arms around his shoulders, and his hands find her waist, and she nearly gasps but holds it in because right now, she’s Princess Heart, not Mouri Ran asking this of Kudou Shinichi. “Please, show me on these lips.”
“As my princess so desires...”
It should be ‘the’, not ‘my.’ And there’s supposed to be another line after that, but nothing stops him as he leans in ahead of time and her eyelids flutter to the erratic beat of her heart. It’s better to be partnered with Araide-sensei in this after all. He will not mess up his lines, and she will not lose her mind the way she’s losing it now.
Two parted lips are a pucker away when the doorbell chimes, making both jolt.
Ran is first to snap out of character, as if she hasn’t had the urge to earlier.
“That—That must be Sonoko. I forgot to tell you...  I invited her in.”
“Oh, great,” Shinichi says.
Forcing her limbs into working order, Ran disentangles slowly, drawing a distance. Shinichi glances at the mask in his hand, then at her, before tossing it to the couch and turning for the door. From the window, she watches him walk to the front gate, scratching the back of his head in an annoyed manner like she just woke him from sleep, but grumpier. She hasn’t seen him display much emotion on a Sunday noon the way she’s seeing him now.
Maybe I shouldn’t have bothered him, she sighs, her turn to slump onto the couch this time.
-
“As I was saying, the prod already scouted the finest material for the costumes, and I decided, pink suits Princess Heart— Hello? Are you listening?”
Ran nearly drops the knife she holds if not for her inhuman reflexes. “Of course! Princess Heart in pink! Yes.” Like nothing happened, she resumes slathering jam and butter on the toast she’s preparing for the three of them. She doesn’t need to look at her side to know Sonoko’s eyeing her from head to toe.
“What happened to her?” The woman turns to Shinichi who sits at the high stool by the kitchen island.
“Dunno,” he says, sounding as noncommittal as he probably appears. Her back is turned against him, but she can see his face, and god why is she blushing?
“I just helped her rehearse. For the play,” he adds.
“Oh?” Sonoko’s brow perks up her forehead, hair whipping as she turns between her and the boy across them. “Did you?”
“Yup. Page 27.”
The dramatic gasp that tears from their friend’s throat is exactly the kind of gasp they expected; even so, Ran still flinches as Shinichi’s stool rakes the floor. “You kissed and I didn’t see?!”
“Hah?!”
“No!”
The two yelp in unison.
“That’s sly! You have to do it again! I’ll judge.”
“Excuse you! It didn’t happen, what you’re thinking!”
“Sonokooo!”
“Oh, shush, Ran, this is good practice. Good practice.”
“But—”
“Relax, rehearsal is rehearsal! In the actual play, once it’s Araide-sensei, he’ll do a better job—”
“I’m going to the toilet,” Shinichi gets off the stool, jaw stiff, out of the kitchen.
“—with a hug than a kiss. Right?” Sonoko ends, once Shinichi is out of the room.
“What?” Ran’s expression is inscrutable as she faces Sonoko completely, the flush across her face befitting embarrassment or ire. “You’re losing me here!”
“Oh, you’re not going to kiss, Ran. The lights will dim before your lips touch.”
“Then why—” she puts down the bread and walks in haste to the island to flip through the script, “Wh— That’s not in here!”
“Sonoko-sama hereby deems the script revised now that we have Araide-sensei.”
“Eh...?!” Ran cannot explain the play of her reactions. On one hand, a cloud is cleared from her mind, having to worry no more about doing something she has no experience with in front of watchful eyes. On the other, bunch of half-formed thoughts whirl through her mind that goes, Shinichi and I almost kissed for nothing, for nothing we almost k-kissed, an almost kiss with Shinichi, almost—
“That won’t do! I mean— That’s so not you! T-To choose a hug over a...”
“Duh, Ran! Even if it’s just a play, I won’t enable a kiss scene between a student and a staff member. We can fake the kiss. That, or switch to hug. Or better yet, change the male lead.”
“Change the male lead? In two weeks? Who will agree?!”
“Easy.” Just in time, Shinichi returns, hands in pocket and long face worn all the way to the stool.  “I know someone who will.”
-
‘Once it’s Araide-sensei, he’ll do a better job…’ What? Kissing Ran? Shinichi wants to puke. Sonoko needs to think things through. If this is part of her plan, it’s unacceptable, it sucks.
There’s no way, no way anyone can do a better job kissing Ran than…
“Aaaargh, what are you thinking!” He ruffles his hair in dismay, curses here and there. He only wanted to help Ran yet he almost went for it. Not as Spade but as himself. The audacity. It’s part of the script, sure, but—
If it is part of the script, then have Ran and Araide-sensei rehearsed it before?
“That’s it,” Shinichi huffs, storming out of the bathroom. If this is the kind of reaction Sonoko wants from him, she’s in for a show. Not just a show but a lifetime of curses and mental stabs. For her to go this far is unbelievable. Did Ran even agree to that? Will such a scene really happen in the play? No matter how despicable Sonoko’s methods are, he has faith she respects Ran’s preference as the female lead. No offense against Araide-sensei, but he cannot take Ran’s first kiss, whether as Spade or not.
That is not to say he knows Ran’s preference, especially when it comes to a first kiss, but… it’s not... Araide-sensei... is it?!
He cannot ascertain, not when Ran did nothing when they were about to kiss…
Okay, halt there, self. I said immersive. That’s immersive. She was acting.
All was but an act. She’s a great actress. I suck. No need to make this a big deal.
Shinichi is a pitiful mess once he’s back in the kitchen.
“My offer still stands, you know.” Sonoko sits beside him, munching a toast, while Ran is busy returning the jam in the cupboard, back against them.
“Your offer?”
Shinichi glances at Ran, then at Sonoko, with that feral grin on her lips and Shinichi does a bad job looking pissed, and it’s maddening because he is pissed, just not obvious with the blush forming across his cheek.
Reprimanding Sonoko is what he intends to do. For doing him dirty, him and Ran dirty, for dragging a staff to be the male lead, for imploring Ran to give her first kiss she’s probably saving in a different setting. All invalid reasons, when he cared less about the play before. He’s a full-time idiot, and Sonoko knows it clearly that’s why she’s offering the role again. He doesn’t want to fall into her trap, the same way he doesn’t want anyone else to be Spade when Princess Heart is Ran.
But Ran looks over her shoulder and they accidentally lock eyes, and pink blooms across her cheeks before she turns around, and suddenly the words that leave his mouth completely betray the thought process he underwent in the bathroom.
“If Ran agrees, yeah,” he says.
