Really awesome article was published today (April 30th, 2023) about gay rodeo!!!
Please give it a read, and if anyone wants information on how to get involved: where to go watch, or even competing- just let me know. Gay rodeo has been going on since the 60s and has chapters in several states in the US, as well as in Canada. But only has a fraction of the numbers it used to, and very few younger folks.

Howdy y’all! I made a discord server for queer folks in the western equine/rodeo industry to hang out.
It’s friendly to all queer folks, and allies interested in the queer side of the western industry. The link can be found below. Stop by and hang out, we’d love to have you!
We have a section that’s still a work in progress for queer associations such as gay rodeo, along with a calendar of upcoming events that these associations put on. If you know of any queer organizations or events, such as rodeos, trail rides, barrel races, etc that you think could be added to the list, please dm me!
For those unfamiliar with queer folks in western spaces, here’s some articles. We’ve always been here and there’s space for us in the industry

Many rodeo associations limit roughstock competitions to men, but online research led Sarah to a circuit that didn’t have any such restrictions. It was appealing to her for other reasons, too. The first competition of what eventually became the International Gay Rodeo Association was held in Reno, Nevada, in 1976. Within a few years, the one-off event had evolved into a gay-rodeo circuit, with subchapters scattered throughout the West; the Texas Gay Rodeo Association was established in 1983. This year, there are a dozen I.G.R.A. events, in places like Salt Lake City and Las Vegas and Santa Fe, culminating in the World Gay Rodeo Finals in El Reno, Oklahoma, in October.

As a queer woman the only thing that truly makes me question if I'm a lesbian or bi is damn cowboys

*knocking at your door*
Excuse me do you have a moment to talk about gay cowboys??
Ok, here's some gay cowboys hc (idk if you meant Texas, the old west, or just cowboy themed stuff so I wrote about all 🤠):
Gay Texas
•Texas doesn't think he's gay he just assumes it's Austin's feelings peeping through and gets mad at Austin for "not keeping it to himself". Although, Austin is bi but doesn't know if Texas is either in denial or just plain dumb. What he does know is Texas keeps a film stills from a silent film Calfornia starred in before the 1937 Fox vault fire where it was thought to be lost.
The stills show Cali in a cowboy hat and boots kissing his co-star. It was filmed before the hay's code so it went a little far (by 1920s standards).
Actual Old west
•California was an important part of the wild west and at the time he was too socially awkward to communicate but due to his gold rush and the way he was just good at being a cowboy, all the other states respected him at that time for what they thought was "stoicism"- until they got to know Cali better and realised that it was autism and anxiety.
•In the wild west, Oklahoma and Texas had a large rivalry and began encouraging other states to join their gangs. It all came ahead when the two challenged each other to a duel, and Oklahoma took the bullets out of Texas' gun. Texas' eyes widened as he shot blanks. With the upper hand Oklahoma could have killed Texas, but in the last moment decided to shoot a barrel instead- he blamed it on the sun. Neither side believed him but to this day no one knows why Oklahoma didn't do it.
• Oregon had stomach cramps because of dysentery, and was often the butt of the joke to the other states
Wild West Rodeo (themed hc)
•Every year the old west states take it in turn to throw a western themed party/rodeo. But every decade or something happens to make a new rule for the party. These include:
-North and South Dakota should be separated when drunk or they'll kill each other
-When renting a mechanical bull, don't buy it from Nevada because you don't know where they've been. (;ಠ_ಠ)
-no skinny jeans on the mechanical bull (Cali once tore his pants and bc he was drunk he started sobbing and venting about trauma and everyone just drank more and went quiet)
-Never reveal the party to Florida. If California hosts then he has to encourage Loui to throw a party to distract him.
-Horseracing and shooting games should be done at separate times so they don't trample anyone.
-Colorado can't put his cannabis plants next to the stables.

True hp story
When I first moved to Portland I had a roommate who just move here from Texas and he was very into the being from Texas thing. He would wear the full cowboy drag with the boots and hat and shit and he would invite other gay cowboys over to the apartment where they would listen to Reba MacIntyre and cackle and we'd get all sorts if noise complaints about them doing the scoot booting boogie at 3 am. One time he came home with a real live rodeo cowboy and they had to go through my room to get to his bedroom and I acted like I was asleep as they clomped through in them fucking boots and had my ear pressed up to the wall to hear if I could hear some bull riding going on but all I heard was my roommate, desperately try to blow up his deflated air mattress for what seemed like an hour as I bit my tongue trying not to fucking laugh. They both passed out after blowing up the bed and no bronc were bucked that night the rodeo came to portland

brokeback mountain still fucking me up almost 12 hours later. i cant stop thinking about it. ennis and his quiet sad cowboy life...he only wanted to survive but he wasn't really living his life, not the way he should have or wanted to. all because he was so traumatized by the murder of a gay man that he was forced to See the aftermath of. and it makes sense, of course it does. but jack wants to Live, not survive, and he wants to be true to himself enough to have a daily life with the man he loves.
ennis survives until the end because that's all he's doing. he hides himself, burrows so deep into the closet that he decides a life with jack isn't ever attainable. but jack wants to fight for it! he wants to share the closet with ennis, but ennis is too scared to even open the door.
i kept thinking, too, about how jack was more "visibly" queer than ennis was despite never publicly saying or doing anything. aguirre is openly homophobic to jack because he saw the two of them fucking around. but when he goes to texas to rodeo, it just seems like there's this underlying vibe of everyone around him Knowing he's gay. he's treated badly at the bar and we're led to believe it's because he got bucked off earlier that night, but the vibe is. Weird. the way people look at him doesn't feel right. jack's parents also seem to know what's going on if there's anything to be said about their weird behavior at the very end of the movie and his father's absolute refusal to let his ashes get spread at brokeback + how cold he is to ennis.
another interesting thing to me was that ennis doesn't open up to anyone except jack. he's quiet and straightforward but he's open with jack in a way he isn't with anyone else, not even alma (during their marriage) or his daughters. it seems like he can only be honest with Himself if it involves jack. but jack keeps everything close to his chest and really doesn't ever come out and tell ennis very much. he lies about aguirre being homophobic to him and he never tells him about the other gay guy he met. he's not open about parts of his childhood like ennis is. he's a self-contained world.
the irony of all of this, of course, is that ennis' survival method spawned from the murder of a gay man does allow him to survive while jack is brutally beaten to death for being gay. i'm just so obsessed with all of it. i know "i wish i knew how to quit you" is meme-ified to hell and back but it's such a crazy fucking line. you get it instantly. if you've ever been in any kind of situationship like that you Know what it means and how it feels. fuuuuck man. there's a lot more i could say but this is probably pretty disorganized already i just had a lot of thoughts and shit to say. tbh i have a lot More to say but this post is already long lol

Hey I saw your blaze and despite living Denton, I had no idea about the rodeo! Ty, I def wanna get involved!
Here’s the link to the Texas gay rodeo association- http://tgra.org/
If you scroll to the bottom of the page you’ll find emails to the different chapters within the state!
Here’s also a link to the International Gay Rodeo Association that the Texas Gay Rodeo Association is a part of- http://www.igra.com/
The Denton Gay Rodeo is once a year. However, all the chapters within the state hold monthly meetings, get togethers, and fundraisers! Checking out one of their events would be a good way to get more information. The Denton Gay Rodeo is also a part of a circuit of rodeos all over the country and you can find the calendars to those on the IGRA website.
I also highly recommend following the gay rodeos on Facebook!
https://www.facebook.com/Texas.Gay.Rodeo.Association?mibextid=LQQJ4d
And
https://m.facebook.com/IGRARodeo/?mibextid=LQQJ4d
If you want help finding more info on competing or anything else, send me a dm!

when is the gay rodeo??
Hello anon! These dates are pulled from the International Gay Rodeo Association's calendar! I've linked the websites associated with the various rodeos too for your searching pleasure ^.^
Bighorn Rodeo is September 15-17, 2023 in Las Vagas, Nevada
World Gay Rodeo Finals is October 27-29, 2023 in El Reno, Oklahoma
Then going into 2024 (remember that 2024 dates are subject to change):
Arizona Gay Rodeo is February 16-18, 2024 in Pheonix, Arizona
Texas Tradition Rodeo is April 12-14, 2024 in Denton, Texas
Rodeo in the Rock is April 26-28, 2024 in Little Rock, Arkansas
Bc I live in New York, the closest of any of these is Arkansas, but it's still one hell of a round trip train ticket, you know? Honestly a little homophobic that travel is so expensive 😔

It is so beautifully ironic to me that I was writing about my own isolated but beautiful experience of processing so many deaths under a pagan lens, and then the hospice people called me to tell me about an LGBT bereavement thing (yknow, big deal for Texas). but it's weird, bc I'm like... I never asked for that? Who instigated this? I wasn't mad, but it was surprising (I mean, I'm OBVIOUSLY trans, EVERYONE knows even if they kinda 'didn't)... but our chaplain was obviously gay, he had a little nose ring and some side shaves like, come on. But it was like, yknow, not my first rodeo meeting a fellow Texan gay who is older and visibly queer but like, tongue in cheek, yknow. I think he put the word in for that, truthfully. So I thanked them, and I personally thanked him for being a man of faith AND living his truth in an adverse place bc it has direct impacts on the community.
I was worried about being fagbashed and treated weird, but I wasn't. Every single nurse at the hospital, almost* every member of hospice was incredible to us, and like, sure people deadnamed me and misgendered me and shit but they didn't know. The only time I felt unwelcome was like, 1 or 2 times at a restaurant where some good ole boy stared at me funny, but most people I encountered were fine.
And yknow what? dad would've loved that.
he had his homophobic moments, he didn't wanna call me his son, and he wasn't exactly inclusive but... we did talk about HRT, he joked about me joining the marines (lol), said I looked good and would get strong (lol), and like, in his own way, he accepted it. and he always tried to tell me DFW was changing, but of course, he's an old cishet white guy so it's like, ok, that opinion can't really live in his lived experience, but I KNOW things BEEN changing, but to expect anything and everything to happen (cos in 2021, we were profiled, denied service at bars, etc, like, that was before I was transitioning too, we were both just femme rock n rollers), and then to be met with a lot of acceptance and people just not giving a FUCK, it made me happy. and It would've made dad happy. he wouldve been like "SEE I TOLD YOU". and he hated pushy christians, even if he was a christian himself, he was sort of an underdog jailhouse christian in a way.
