Gotta be honest, the idea that Luke wouldn’t send a child alone in an X-wing with only a droid for company is funny to me.

Like, we’re talking about the same Luke, right? The one who spent years bulls-eyeing womp rats and took the experience from that to then blow up the Death Star? The one who was like “This is a trap… I’m gonna walk right into it.” The one who was like “I will rescue my dear friend by waltzing in without a disguise and being as obnoxious as possible.” “How do we get out of this situation? How about we convince these small bear creatures that our droid is a god, that will probably work.” “I know Darth Vader is a murderer who murdered my Ben and is trying to murder me and all, but he is also my dad and therefore I love him.”

Luke would send a child in an X-wing without even fucking thinking about it! Do you REALLY think LUKE SKYWALKER is a reasonable human being?? Are you honestly trying to tell me that this man who has been driving the same fucking ship for like ten years would understand how dangerous it is to put an unsupervised child in a vehicle??? Do you really honestly truly think that Luke knows how to care for children????

You see, a lot of people like to portray Luke as perfect. And this is the same issue I have with people who portray Obi-Wan as perfect, or Yoda, or Mace, or literally any character in all of Star Wars because the whole point is that the are flawed human beings!

But it’s ESPECIALLY egregrious with Luke because I don’t know where any of you got this idea that Luke is a sweet summer child??? This man has a death count of over one million. This man had Seen Some Shit that it is literally impossible not to be affected by. Why do so many people assume that Luke at the end of the Trilogy is the same as Luke at the beginning of the Trilogy? He’s changed! He’s a different person! That’s what makes the Original Trilogy such a good trilogy!! It’s basic storytelling!!! A character canNOT be at the same place mentally as when they began the story, or else it’s not a good story!

But also, I hate the way this colours shipping fics with Luke. Like, listen. There is no ship where Luke should be the straightman of the relationship. Luke Skywalker just is not normal. He’s weird, he’s deranged, he’s so strange; he cannot be a straightman, it just doesn’t work. It’s so completely out of character it isn’t even funny.

The joy of shipping Luke is that every single thing that you can ship Luke with will come out the other sode looking rational.

Han Solo is a smuggler who hangs out with a Wookiee and who does extremely dangerous, stupid shit, but next to Luke?? Rational. Normal. Someone who uses their brain, Luke, take notes-

Din Djarin is a bounty hunter who decided that he would rather destroy an entire group of highly dangerous men than give up the cute kid he just found. But compared to Luke? At least he has equipment on him!

Mara Jade literally was mind-controlled by the Emperor and was Darth Vader’s coworker and was also a Jedi (something that no rational person would be honestly) and even she comes across as normal compared to Luke Skywalker.

I know this is rambly and disjointed and I know people disagree with me, but like??? Yes, I think Luke is great with kids. Yes, I think Luke is a good teacher. Yes, I think Luke is the type of person to wave goodbye as an infant flies off in his warship. I think Luke is the type of person who would throw a child into the air way too high and then catch them. Where did the idea that he’s the responsible parent come from? Luke is teaching infants how to use laser swords, do you REALLY THINK that’s what a responsible parent would do????

Bro omfg Betty and Simon are so fucking cute episode 8 was everything for that ship it was so nice to finally see their relationship because in the main series we only got dialogue about it but nothing shown

The callback to meeting in the library and touching the same book and Simon letting Betty taking them Betty leaving a note in it because she knew Simon would be the first to take it and learning BETTY WAS IN THE CAR when Simon found the enchiridion (which was a callback to the newspaper clipping Marcy picked up in “I remember you”

OMG THEY WERE SO CUTE the way they went on the jungle adventure together and were so dorky AND CHEERS BEING THEIR THING

What destroyed me was that line in the song “it ain’t called love without a little tragedy” EXPLANATION OF THEIR WHOLE RELATIONSHIP knowing that they were soulmate they loved other greatly were going to get married but then Simon found the crown the mushroom war bombs destroyed the world then Simon goes insane is free and uses his daughter’s plushie to get Betty back 1000 years later but is cursed again so Betty gets cursed to save Simon (which means in them both suffering from the immortality= sadness and madness curse as well) and worked so hard but fails so she makes a deal with the most powerful god to save him but has to sacrifice herself but she does anyways because she loves him AND IDBSKMAJDJWVAJBBDJS THEY GOT BE IN A CHOKEHOLD RIGHT NOW

The Teacher Becomes the Student

one of the many things that i love about Avatrice is Bea’s mentoring of Ava, specifically her ability to change tactics mid-training and how that change contributed to them connecting on an emotional level.

for instance, Beatrice might seem a bit cold or detached sometimes…

…but of course it’s going to come off that way compared to Ava’s upbeat and happy go-lucky personality.

they’re polar opposites in terms of their outward expression. but what i appreciate about Beatrice as a mentor is that, because Ava is so much different from her, Bea constantly works to find new and fresh ways to mentor her throughout their journey.

one of the key moments is when Beatrice reads the story about the lesbian nun to Ava. Bea obviously knows what the story is about when she tells it, including its double relevance; it’s a lesson for Ava, sure, but this breakthrough moment was more about Beatrice. you can see she’s nervous when she reveals to Ava that the warrior nun in the story is a lesbian. but i don’t think Bea’s voice shakes because she’s nervous about telling Ava; i think she’s more nervous about admitting it to herself.

Beatrice speaking her truth aloud and then pushing forward by telling Ava about her struggles is her breaking through her own personal pain.

after wiping her tears away, Beatrice tells Ava that now it’s her turn. i’m sure Beatrice caught on that Ava has a knack for running away from scary situations, so when Beatrice has a chance to mentor Ava, instead of yelling at her or scaring her (like Lilith and Mother Superion), Beatrice opens up about herself in an attempt to connect with Ava. all Ava wants is connection, something Beatrice picks up on very early, but Beatrice isn’t going to ask Ava to do something that she herself is unable to do.

as a mentor, not only is Beatrice leading by example, but she is connecting with Ava by meeting her halfway and allowing herself to open up as a way to show Ava that they’re in this together.

and when Bea opens up, Ava dives in, as only Ava can: heart first.

from the very first time they meet to the very last moment, Ava slowly peels back Bea’s many layers and then just tears them to shreds. the thing is, despite her bluntness and cool demeanor, Beatrice strikes me as a very kindhearted and compassionate person. i imagine she remembers birthdays and loves kids and volunteers at homeless shelters. like top tier saint. but i feel like it’s all very understated and composed. “contained,” like that woman, who was flirting with Bea, said. but Ava makes it hard for Bea to stay contained. from swapping puns, to cheek kisses, to dancing drunk in a Swiss bar, Ava totally breaks Bea wide open.

and in letting Ava in, Bea goes from sacrificing her life because of shame, to living her life because of love.

Something i really like about yohaji is its distinction between relationships with peers amd relationships with superiors.

One thing i thought was kinda silly at the begining was that haruaki was always hanging out with his students lile during breaks and shit (felt most strongly when they get scolded for breaking a window while playimg baseball) and i reason well hes the main character of course hes hanging out with the principal cast and i would have been fine with that.

But no not only does tanaka-sensei provide a in character reason (haru had a terrible school life) they come at me with 'haruaki is jealous of people friends' and what i think is really interesting about that initial chapter is that typically it would end with an 'oohhh but they ARE you're friends' but no it ends with 'even if you didn't make friends as a child you can still make adult friends' with miki and izuna becoming his friends.

This is echoed in the arc where haruaki is a student WITH sano and with his students and he has so much fun but finally he says 'im not your friend im your teacher' the relationships you have with your teachers and adults and vice versa in your life arent without value but theyre not the same as ones you make with your peers and should not be treated as such

Thomas Sampson has been having a truly awful last two years. Recently divorced and fired from his position at Brown after his problems with alcohol were discovered, he has been blacklisted from almost every truly prestigious university in the country, and forced to take the only job he’s been offered in months: teaching a brand-new World Mythology class at Newsome, a small university in Connecticut. Half numb inside and having lost much of his passion for the myths he teaches, he is resigned to spending his days reciting the same ancient stories to uncaring students and his nights going to AA meetings and falling asleep in front of a muted television - until a young woman with large glasses and dark clothes begins a debate with him in his first lesson and, without even meaning to, starts to bring color back into his world.

Ana Vazquez may not have been through what her professor has, but they haven’t exactly had it easy either. Having survived a home invasion that killed her parents and forced to become their younger sister’s legal guardian at only eighteen, she has finally made it to their senior year at Newsome with her sister as a freshman after being forced to delay pursuing their degree in order to be the caregiver she needed to be. Suffering from terrible insomnia and terrified to fall asleep and see their parents’ bodies all over again, she lives off of energy drinks and medications to soothe their anxiety, but is nonetheless determined to take as many classes as she can handle - including Newsome’s new World Mythology course, which they sign up for because of her childhood love for stories of gods and divine heroes, but quickly find that their professor is the part of the course she enjoys most.

In the beginning, Ana and Thomas’s relationship is that of a perfectly regular teacher and student, but after a chance midnight encounter, the two slowly begin to grow closer, sharing the darkest corners of their souls and leaning on each other for the comfort they both so crave… so, of course, it is inevitable that the bond between them begins to cross the line of what is socially acceptable. And they know, the both of them, that what they are doing is wrong, that the inherent power Thomas has over Ana is a problem and that relying on another person to hold them together is not at all healthy… but beyond the deities they discuss in the classroom, they have begun to find a new, beautiful religion in each other, to build a love that is messy and aching but so, so true, and that makes it very hard for either of them to care about what other people may deem “right”.
