Is there a full picture from the pattern book to see and what pattern book are you using?

I have been using the first edition of this pattern drafting book (in English units); Hanfu Pattern Making by TT Duong. I have not been posting full info from the book since 1.) I paid for the book 2.) I'd like others to pay for the book (at least ebook).

There is also a paperback version as well, and apparently a second edition now. Here is the metric version.

I would highly recommend the ebook since there are varying quality issues with the paperback versions. This book assumes a lot of things, so it helps to have a base level of sewing knowledge. You have to read between the lines and make some calls yourself to have things fit better. Hence, I blogged a lot of my changes as I went here.

And even though his are Korean, a lot of the techniques are similar like sewing the sleeves and whatnot. Plus, fashion is never in a vacuum and different countries and styles influence each other all the time. I'd suggest checking out;

Keep in mind a lot of the xianxia/wuxia outfits are very whimsical and not historically accurate so looking at a lot of resources that are different would help. The pattern making book is most helpful when it comes to estimating the yardage.

i'm no expert on traditional chinese fashion but i like to picture it as tang dynasty era women's hanfu, like in those photos

of course there are variations in wealth that show through different kunzes' outfits, but as for hairstyles and jewelry and makeup, i picture them rather simple (like in the 3rd link). kunzes are at the very bottom of the food chain and if shown in public they can't be too trussed up. that's reserved for people who actually possess wealth and privilege. what happens in private is up to their owners tho.

Hsien-Ko Design Notes and Inspiration

One thing about Cryas Darkstalkers is my desire to not only write and think of the characters differently based on official information and headcanon, but also try to redesign them to fit the world I imagine and their personalities in the mythos. Today, I want to talk about my process and notes regarding the official design of one of the main protagonists of Cryas Darkstalkers: Shao Hsien-Ko!

Compared to her original version, she actually isn't too drastic of a change. Honestly, her original design is already really well done and awesome. However, I had some ideas and thoughts to make her stand out from the original. For the foundation I stuck with the design of her from Vampire Hunter/ Night Warriors: Darkstalkers' Revenge.

If you were not aware, Hsien-Ko basically has two official designs. This version of her and the one from the official art for Darkstalkers Resurrection. I chose the Hunters design as I generally really love the overall idea of the qipao for this version of her. The DSR version goes for a qipao with two flaps, front and back. I am not a fan of that on top of the change to her hat where she has a bell on the top rather than a ball.

Now what about that necklace she wears? Probably the most notable feature of her, I actually do have an inspiration. The idea of the necklace stems from the story 'Monsters and the Secret of Immortality'.

Hsien-Ko's overall design is interesting in that story as she is portrayed as much wilder and psychotic in her demeanor. But I also think aspects of the design are… well too busy. But among the design elements, the necklace caught my eye the most. In Cryas DS, to mirror the… well mirror that Mei-Ling has, Hsien-Ko wears the necklace that her mother wore as a physical memento of her on her journey to save her. The character on her necklace was changed to 邵 (shào), her family name in Cryas Darkstalkers. Now while in the main timeline it is 少 (shǎo), I already was too used to 邵 that I decided to stick with that pronunciation and way the character is written.

The two yellow strings that follow along the side of her breasts and torso were inspired by a piece of art I saw that showed an idea of strings on her qipao, granted they were much smaller elements. I would share the art, but honestly unless it is official art, my art, or art I commissioned, I would rather not share. Even with giving credit, it just wouldn't feel right. However, one piece I will share is this:

The way Casa drew Hsien-Ko here, specifically the way the strings were attached to her qipao were different compared to how I originally did it. I loved the idea and made that official to her.

What about the flower on the flap of her qipao, you may ask? Honestly, I never came across a design that inspired me, it was more so something involving the origins of Hsien-Ko's name in Chinese, 仙姑 (xiāngū). Her name derives from the Xian that is among the pantheon of the Eight Immortals of Chinese mythos, 何仙姑 (hé xiāngū). In tellings of the story, the Xian is said to hold a lotus flower and in general seems to have a strong association with the flower. Because I wanted to still add something more to Hsien-Ko without getting too extremely away from the core of her generally simple design, I thought it would be lovely to add a lotus flower design to her qipao. Not only pretty but tapping more into her Chinese roots. While her old hanfu and dudou have a more traditionally designed lotus flower, the one on her current garb is a more stylized take on the flower, courtesy of Mei-Ling.

Another minor detail, but one I wanted to still bring up. The story 'Lei-Lei (Hsien-Ko) Returns' by Takashi Mibu is another excellent anthology story centering around the Shao sisters. I love the general expressions they draw Hsien-Ko in, really showing off her fangs. But what I wanted to bring up is the trim on her qipao. You can see here that rather than be flat, it is made to have volume. Like a stuffed trim. I liked that and rolled with it.

While initially I somewhat stuck to the general shape of Hsien-Ko's hairstyle in the main timeline, it evolved into something more wild and less rigid. As time went on, while the general idea of her hair fanning out reaching towards the length of her shoulders was still the same, the shape it took on was more claw and fang like. Wild you could say. While not exactly the same, these characters Daisy and Sabrina were ones to sort of plant the seed.

The idea of describing it as wilder, I say I can still somewhat also point to 'Monsters and the Secrets of Immortality's design of Hsien-Ko for that.

Because I genuinely get sick of Hsien-Ko being draw in such small/thin/…. well anime proportioned manner, I wanted to go back to what Vampire Hunter established in official art and her sprites in game: her muscles. Granted, I took it a step further as I altered the general shape of her body to be more muscular and wider build. One could say thicc, I prefer warrior build. I can point to three sources that I think of when I think of her body shape. Kratos from the modern God of War era, a sketch my friend @yourweebmystic made some time ago, and the way an artist who goes by the name Rayluaza draws the character Chi Chi. To show an idea of Rayluaza's way of drawing strong women, I'll share a commission I got from them of my Hsien-Ko. Honestly, Rayluaza did a perfect representation of what I believe for Hsien-Ko in Cryas Darkstalkers in terms of her body shape and build.

That sums it up for Hsien-Ko, but there is more to her than her base state. Let's take a moment to talk about the design elements of another notable power of Hsien-Ko in Cryas Darkstalkers: Xié è De Yōngbào/Dark Embrace.

The Dark Embrace Burst was based on something for one of my OCs in terms of a Burst they have of a similar name: Ebony Embrace. Now that individual is a single person, but Hsien-Ko and Mei-Ling are two people who are closely connected. In essence, like as jiangshis, they are two halves of the idea of this whole Burst. Hsien-Ko is the wild, raw power of it. Her upper clothes tear away only because that is where the shadow attaches to her body when Mei-Ling attaches. The hat vanishes to help accentuate the wild look to her. Seeing her hair full on. The markings? An underlying thing about the Burst is its connection to the substance, Corriyami. Norocier, a Corrian, is a being that was born from the substance. In a way, it is a physical manifestation of those with this kind of Burst would look like if they were Corrian. Now the markings took on different ideas over time. Two sources I can fully acknowledge that helped to steer the course of the markings were these two pieces.

The first is done by the artist tana_taka_3rder and the second is done by my friend @capyguava

A small detail, but still important to me. Initially, Hsien-Ko's eyes in the Burst were more so based on the idea of glowing eyes I saw with the likes of Anti Form and Rage Form Sora.

However, when I saw this art that was made by Alejo, I then went with the idea that their general eye shapes stayed the same. When in most states of mind/ levels of emotion, they had lines to represent their iris. But when sufficiently enraged or in a high state of negative emotion, they disappear to give off a more intimidating appearance.

While art tends to vary between artists about the eye color of Hsien-Ko officially, I stuck with Yellow. I feel the color contrasts well, even compliment her blue skin. Plus if you think about Chinese color theory and beliefs, one of the ideas is that yellow is symbolic with heroism. This is something very prominently used in the Kung Fu Panda series as the main protagonist Po is seen quite a lot with the color yellow. The villain of the first film, Tai Lung, had Yellow eyes. This went well where he felt like a wronged individual. A hero in his own mind. And many scenes with heroic moments or those of triumph feature the color a lot. So honestly, I think it stands Hsien-Ko sticks with that general idea as well due to her Chinese roots.

Oh, I should probably explain the ideas behind Hsien-Ko's human design. So of course I wanted her to look like a Qing woman of the 1730s-1740s since that is the time period she was alive. Skin tone and eye color were for the more typical tones that a Chinese individual could easily have. However compared to Mei-Ling and her mother, she has a bit more melanin to her.

So fun fact, in reality there really wasn't any kind of uniform for a martial artist during those time periods… or even later on in history. They would generally fight in their day clothes. So, while pertaining to the general dress idea of the Qing period, I still wanted Hsien-Ko's clothes to still look comfortable and easy to move around in. The colors scheme just works for her since she has some association with those colors. And even in some sprite art for Hsien-Ko in VHunter, her qipao was red, so a nice nod. As for her hairstyle, that was inspired by the design I saw in the Tetsujin Drama doujin. I think it is a nice contrast to what would become a much wilder hairstyle that grew from her original style.

egggghghg probably only her kimono! the most loose style would be just lowering the sleeves down but she wouldnt really enjoy it cause of her prosthetic, her undersuit covers most of her body too, vry comfy, she uses her stylized kimono mostly because its her old clothing granted by her "caretaker"

Yee she has a lot of jewelry i think! She has a magatama in the front of her attires hanging from the her shimenawa ropes, an omamori in the back of her kimono that most of the time is covered by her hair, a fan accesorie with gold ornaments and lilies on her hair too! the jade accesories and shimenawa attires serve for keeping the bad energies trapped inside her body hehehe

in the modern formal she has a versace dress ghjdgbdf and ye! her base hanfu is already very dressed up, a lot of gold and jade accesories all very opulent, and eyey coming from a noble family she def has -or had- a lot of different outfits too

Hello,

Happy to hear you are looking to cosplay LBH! Ah, the very pretty but complicated Thai cover artwork. . . this one makes me groan at how intricate it is. I screen shot this from the SVSSS carrd.

There is a lot of layer action going on. Kityone, an amazing soul, did great work to remove text from more official artwork for the Thai editions.

This is the only full length shot of Binghe’s outfit I could find.

Layers 1.) Zhong yi layer 1- innermost layer - black. I’d pick a cotton or linen fabric for this. You are looking at one that is very slim fitting. The Hanfu Story sells them as well to give you an idea for cut; see here

2.) Zhiju layer 2 - straight hem robe - black with narrow sleeves. It has what I think is an ‘artistic/anachronistic’ high Mandarin-ish style collar. The Erha manhua/artwork does this all the time. It seems to be a thing for xianxia attire. It is hard to find info on this in English, so, I could totally be wrong. I can only find that type of collar on vintage patterns - think cheongsam/qipao or maybe Qing historical garments. I’d personally copy the cheongsam/qipao collar as a base pattern and then modify it to match the hanfu style. I know this is a huge shortcut but it makes sense in my mind. Do a mock up with scrap fabric. 3.) Zhuji layer 3 - straight hem robe with red neck placket and red sleeve cuffs. I think this has shorter sleeves that fall just past the elbow (3/4 length?) and are super wide. [cries in sheer yardage] The sleeve looks like it almost reaches mid-calf or lower. I think it is supposed to be imperial/royal level - like the looooong sleeves you see in Nirvana in Fire worn by the princes when they attend court. The neckline is a deeper V and I think a good reference for the cut is from the cdrama My Heroic Husband with the MC, Ning Yi. His outfits frequently have this style which makes a clear X across the chest. The blue/teal one in the middle is the best match and seems to fall in the right spot on the chest.

4.) Belt with long fabric strip/accent. I have no idea what the large silver belt buckle is supposed to look like - we don’t have good enough detail and resolution. However, we can see that there is a long strip of red fabric that falls from the waist down the front to the feet almost. On top of the red fabric is a fancier accent piece in black with silver trim and tassels. I think it is a mix of these accessories from LBH and SQQ in the Korean cover here. With the shape of SQQ’s being a slightly better match - minus the tasseled pendant.

5.) Banbi jacket/coat - white with red trim and “artistic” choice collar. The jacket is a short sleeve one with a red cuff/trim that is clearly an under layer but I would attach it to the white jacket to make my life easier and less sweaty. The popped collar baffles me - is it sort of like a jacket with a lapel-ish collar? It gives me vibes of the jackets that Sakamoto and Takasugi wear in Gintama and shogunate officials which are also anachronistic by design in a series like Gintama. Or maybe a better comparison is the donghua for Thousand Autumns and Yan Wushi’s open collar layer?

It looks like the neck placket itself is thick in the middle and normal on the outside. I’ve attempted to make a quick example of what I think this looks like here.

I think this is what I would do to sew it onto the jacket and make sure to add interfacing and iron it well. I would do these five layers if I wanted to cosplay this LBH outfit. The zhong yi layer is really important since that is where you are gonna sweat the most, I found it worked well with my 13 hours of WKX with a wig in LA having to stand outside in lines in the summer temps. IDIA SHROUD

he’s only seen hanfu through games. and he doesn’t even know that hanfu is a traditional wear because he’s mostly seen qipaos.

is very insecure in trying on out. won’t go out in it. he prefers to try it on in the confines of his room.

ortho helps him research some hair styles to try. his hair is long enough to do elaborate hair styles.

no accessories though considering his hair is fire.

hanfu to idia feels freeing, similar to robes he would wear when he was younger.

goes for light blues and black hanfus. black hanfus especially make him look like royalty. it fits his pretty features and contrasts nicely with his fair skin.

a wei jin dynasty man. but he also doesn’t mind modern stylized hanfus. they’re a lot easier to go out in. hanfu suits are some of his go tos.

doesn’t know how to do the makeup. but is willing to try.

ORTHO SHROUD

ortho learns about hanfu via the internet and social media. it’s currently trending right now and he brings it up to idia that they should totally try to wear them.

he’s super excited to try on hanfu. it’s a lot different from the other clothes he’s worn.

doesn’t use hair extensions or wigs (because his hair would probably burn them).

likes carrying a matching fan with him.

really likes purple hanfus. purples of all kinds too. pastel, darks, lilacs, hots. purple really suits him.

keeps a variety of face veils in his closet. not for him. sometimes for him. mostly for idia.

a tang dynasty type.

knows about the history very well. mostly because of his searching on the web.

Favorite Chapters: Chapter 15, Chapter 55, Chapter 61, Chapter 138, Chapter 176, Chapter 203, Chapter 207, Chapter 210, and Chapter 213

Plot Synopsis: Zihao Zhang, a brilliant cross-dresser who always knows how to pick the killer skirt to wear, just got dumped ruthlessly. What would happen when he accidentally catches the eyes of Yuze Shao, a super straight guy who always assumes himself to be "unbendable". Suit? Lolita dresses? Hanfu - Traditional Chinese clothing from Han Dynasty? All pieces of cake for Zihao Zhang!

The art is beautiful. All the characters are handsome, beautiful, and likable. Zihao Zhang is the prettiest and cutest character. Love how stylized and pretty his clothes are. Also, Zihao's ex-girlfriend, Jiajia, is very admirable for her patience. Though she eventually can't take it anymore, she is still nice to Zihao and protects him.

The plot is great. It is interesting and so wholesome. All the couples are good together. Zihao and Yuze are the best couple and their chemistry is really great. My favorite scene was the wedding photoshoot. Though it was just a photoshoot, I still enjoy seeing them in wedding dresses and suits. I wished they really got married and were included in the story. Also, I wished that there were side stories showing the future of each couple, especially Ange and Boss Kim.

NECKLACE by René-Jules Lalique, c. 1897–1899

He designed this powerfully evocative necklace for his second wife, Augustine-Alice Ledru, around the turn of the century. The repeats of the main motif — an attenuated female nude whose highly stylized curling hair swirls around her head and whose arms sensuously curve down to become a border enclosing enamel-and-gold swans and an oval cabochon amethyst — are separated by pendants set with fire opals mounted in swirling gold tendrils.
