thoughts on/hcs for steph?

There's this one post (not mine) that kind of explores my thoughts on Steph. I think it's a downright shame that her character gets simplified to liking purple, waffles, and being a blonde girl. She is extremely badass. There are so many hobbies and abilities she does that just don't get talked about (her gymnastics, piano, etc.).

Taking her physical capabilities aside, how the fuck did she manage to be strong enough (willpower and emotionally) to deal with everything she did?

Tim is my favorite Robin due to the entire tragedy that is his Robin. Unlike the ones before and Damian, he had less support and care at the start of his Robin.

Steph, though? Absolutely no support from Bruce when she started being a vigilante. Her time as Robin was hell. She was constantly belittled and disregarded (before, during, and after she became Robin). She kind of reminds me of Barbara in that way (being disregarded by Bruce and establishing herself independently because of it).

Steph is strong as fuck to overcome everything she did. Even putting Black Mask and her dying aside, her becoming a vigilante to stop her father without support is amazing. She was constantly told to quit or met the resistance of a Bat for her efforts. She kept going in spite of that. I admire her resilience.

I have been sitting on the idea of her and Tim's relationship. To me, I think they are horrible for each other romantically. They are too toxic and butt heads too much for a romantic relationship.

Platonically, though? They are each other's soul mate. I love the idea that they know each other and are there for each other on another level. It would be similar to Tim's relationship with YJ, but still more. Those two tried a romantic relationship because they meant so much to each other, but they learned they navigated better without those aspects.

In ways, she reminds me of Dick and Jason combined. They both put up fronts (Dick's is sunshine and Jason's is a tough guy act) to bury their hurt and weaknesses. Steph teters between being peppy and being willing to deck you. That hides the complexity of how much she cares for people, how hurt she can be by others' actions, how intelligent she actually is, and her tendency to put others first.

She'll look out for herself, especially because no one else did, but she also cares too much about others to not help them.

Alright, as far as hc for Steph, I like the idea that she can navigate public opinion almost as well as Bruce and Tim. If she truly truly wanted to put in the effort, she could schmooze like the best of them. She combines Selina and Tim's approach to weasel whatever she wants out of her target. In fact, Tim loves watching her fool some unfortunate person as Steph turns them around.

She doesn't do this often because of the effort, money, and overall unpleasantness of the company required to do it.

Steph was a wildly popular character who was made Robin for a couple month specifically in preparation to kill her off in the War Games cross over event. During her time as robin comics fans responded so well that one of the writers asked if they should keep her alive and let her have a real run but an editor refused. Instead she was horrifically punished by the narrative for... doing exactly what every robin has done always. Not listening to batman, rescuing him, trying to earn his approval. Unlike the other robins she was murdered in a way that implied some kind of sexual assault while none of her friends or mentors looked for her. Did i mention she was 15?

man I really wish DC would acknowledge Cassandra and Barbara’s relationship and how complicated it was. Cass did see Barbara as a mother figure and Barbara was one of the people that was closest to her but she could be harsh at times :(

i do wish DC would allow them their full complexity.

none of cass's relationships in her batgirl 2000 run were 2D, there were a lot of interesting parts and flaws with all of the characters involved. Bruce and Babs each made Cass feel bad in their own ways accidentally, cass didn't respect Steph's skill even if she was her friend and was OK knocking her out when she felt like it...

there could've been a lot of potential for growth but we got robbed of it. we started to see babs and cass get on more equal terms and babs apologize to her near the end of cass's batgirl run but when DC dropped that and did the dark cass arc.

Blackwell Brawls: basic rundown.

Gameplay:

There are three buttons of attack. Light, medium, and heavy. If you hit the light attack button five times consecutively, you'll do an easy combo. Masterpiece moves are the equivalent of super moves.

Style:

A sprite based game rather than full three dimensional models. HD 2D fighting game. Has the option in the settings to give it a Polaroid effect. The game has lightly cartoonish aspects to it, like Chloe being able to make a damaging speech bubble, Nathan throwing bills as a basic attack, or Victoria being able to inflict physical damage by taking an embarrassing picture of the opponent, but nothing too much. Just fun.

Features:

Besides arcade, offline and online modes, the game has a gallery, music and store system. You can unlock them through gameplay, or unlock them through purchase.

Gallery:

Is designed like a portfolio and has a little animation of Max opening a scrapbook. Includes concept art, opening cutscenes, endings, and little 'mini-movies of your character just in their comfort zone. (You unlock the latter by beating arcade ladder on "Blackwell's finest" (Super hard mode)

Music:

Has an animation of Dana dancing on her bed with the music. Music is unlocked as you play. (There's a secret mode with Max where you play a rhythm game.)

Store:

There’s two stores for the two kinds of currency. The first store only uses in game currency and is styled after the Two Whales Diner with Joyce.

The second store is for irl money and is held by Frank. Obviously.

hooooo my fucking god I don't know why but recently my anxiety/sence of dread has SKYROCKETED in the last 3 days, I haven't been sleeping great and last night I had an anxiety dream about manning the register at work. idk I guess today was fine but im so fucking overstimulated I guess?? I seriously just dont fuking know. but anyway here’s a summary of some days that I may or may not remember. putting it under the cut

Wednesday I was exited to work, they didn’t need me, I hung out with my friends at their outdoor band concert and had boba and it got super cold out

Thursday I went with my dad to drop off a car, then we had breakfast together at a little restaurant I had never been to before. He told me about his childhood n stuff. Then I went to work and priced things outside and felt good about helping some people buy plants even tho I didn’t know exactly what I was doing and ended up handing them off to Becky anyway. Got off work, came home, hung out waiting to be able to go visit my friend but she took a while so dad and I made the snack he had a lot as a kid which was just handmade chocolate frosting on graham crackers. Eventually my friend got home so I grabbed one of those graham crackers in some Tupperware and some other stuff and headed out. It was a longer drive than I was expecting but eh whatever, I got there no problem with a bunch of dad’s shit in the back of the car. We had awkward hellos in her apartment and I pet her fat ass cat until she suggested we go thrifting and oh my god I had never wanted to go thrifting more in my life than right then. I had one of those moments where I realized oh I’m an adult who can go out and just DO things :D so we walked around and gossiped in goodwil and had a great time until they closed, whereupon steph frantically looked for anything that was open near us while I drove around. We settled on going to a little park nearby, where we climbed on the tube with holes on it and swung on the swings. Then we walked around a dense tree/brush like and into the middle of a field, having our main character moments as we walked to the top of a hill with a cross on it. I took a picture of the sunset and a selfie with both of us before we walked back through the field and drove back to her apartment. I gave her 2 tiny flower jars and she let me borrow her container of earring hardware and a bunch of different tiny things to make into earrings. I had a great time and I’d love to hang out again, maybe when everything isn’t closed lmao. We joked a lot about understanding why people do drugs lmao since there’s nothing else to do! everything’s closed!! Also some joke flirting mixed in for flavor. We have an excuse to hang out again so I can return her earring supplies and she can return my Tupperware lol. I thought my phone was going to die on the way home before I realized there was a charging cord in the car! Nice. Got home, watched my friend stream plasmaphobia for a bit while I finished a birthday gift, and hung out and slept when she quit streaming. 

Friend’s birthday party day!! Also dad moving day!! The first task of the day was to drive with my dad down to the nearest uhaul to pick up a big ol’ truck, and follow him home in the car while he lead the way in the truck. Then we brought his car full of shit to the apartment, got his key and paid his first month, and looked through everything to do inspection. Tbh it’s a pretty nice apartment, I’d love to spend some time there once it’s a bit more furnished. My favorite part is a Harry Potter style hidey hole closet that’s meant for storage, but it’s the perfect size for a secluded hangout spot for me. I’ll totally let him use it for storage if he wants, I just like sitting in there. I joked that I would let Emily hang out in the spare bedroom and I could get the tiny room. But we spent time cleaning and looking around and bringing in boxes before dad sent me to pick up lunch, my sister, and another car load of boxes. I left to do all 3 and came back with Mcallisters, and we all sat on the floor and ate together. A very nice way to break in a new apartment. We brought in boxes and dad sent us on a quest to pick up a car part and drop it off where the car we dropped off the day before. We got there just fine, but getting to the second location was a nightmare because of all my wrong turns and u turns and no left turns, it was awful. I mean we got there eventually but still. By then it was time for me to get home so I could wash my hair and get ready for the party!! I got everything ready, but my sister wouldn’t be home with the car on time, so I just took my mom’s van. I was on time for once!! But in exchange I didn’t realize I had forgotten Cassidy’s gift until I was like 3 minutes away. But also I found driving my moms van very easy compared to last time I tried to drive it, and I think I’m a much more confident driver now :) but I was one of the first to arrive, accidentally twinned with cass, waited for everyone to show up, met her new dog, and then we all packed up the picnic basket and walked to the top of a hill to have our little sandwiches and play cards against humanity. On the walk there we passed by a park where little kids were asking why we were all dressed up if it wasn’t Halloween, so I shouted at them that it was her birthday and handed them the branch I was carrying. We played CAH on the hill and ate little sandwiches and meatballs and drank sparkling juice and had a lovely time, and when we were done, we walked back to her house where there was pizza and we all changed out of our formal wear. My bra was sewed into my dress with 6 stitches, so I grabbed some scissors and flashed my friend’s cat as I cut my bra free of the dress because I forgot to bring an extra. I changed into my ghostbusters shirt and snake onesie and joined everyone outside for pizza and lots and lots of stories and ice cream cake and gossip and quiplash and balloons and gifts and CAH and friends leaving and new friends arriving and more quiplash and then the grass getting cold and wet and going ham on keeping the balloons up and then playing that’s what she said (basically CAH but ✨for women ✨) and by this time there was a dude I didn’t know but he was very nice and cute and already taken. Tbh I didn’t know half the people there, there was a group of 4 cool alt people I had never met and then the 4 band kids I already knew but everyone else seemed to know each other and they all had great energy so I yelled a lot and joked a ton and had an amazing time. As the crowd dwindled and the night got cooler, I helped put things away before I left so I could be a nice guest, said my goodbyes, gathered my things, and drove home past midnight. Ask walked around the house turning off lights like my mom asked, I realized that my dad wouldn’t be sleeping here anymore, and I felt bad that he had to spend the night all alone in his new apartment :( and this is going to be a huge financial burden that idk if he can afford, rent for the apartment is almost as much as my mom pays for the house. Jejdjgjt this is all a mess and I would like to go back to ignoring it all <3 Listened to a lot of two trucks by lemon demon lmao

Hoo boy howdy I did a lot of shit today. Basically as soon as I woke up I got a text from dad about us helping him move with a promise of donut holes and a fruit platter. I walked out to the garage to find our family friends the drakes helping to move boxes, so we all spent several hours loading boxes into our cars and driving back and forth from the house to the apartment, with emily and I avoiding the drakes as much as possible lmao. When we had moved as much as we could in the car, we started loading up the uhaul, shoving as much shit in there as possible so we only had to do one trip there and back. Partially through unloading the truck the drakes stopped cleaning things before we brought them in left and some randos from dad’s work came to help unload and somewhere in the middle of all this our aunt and uncle and her service dog came to visit?? Bruh idk so much stuff happened. Emily asked me to take her home so she could work on school stuff and we put things back into the garage and I went back to the apartment to help with stuff and hang out with my aunt while my dad and uncle returned the truck. We made a list of stuff I might need for college and I wrote it down on a notepad and most of the page space was taken up by ponies tbh. The men brought back burger king and eventually my aunt and uncle left. I helped my dad clean up and set up his wifi and we watched mama Mia. The chicken sandwich reheated well but the fries did not. After work dad and I stopped by the house, I got an info card to fill out so I can be called in for jury duty eventually, dad handed me $50 for dinner for us and my sister, we laid on the floor and looked at the noodles and company menu, drove there, picked up our food, had a lovely dinner at dad’s apartment, laid around while he talked to Greg on the phone, went to target to pick up small apartment things like a clock and a trash can and some small groceries but it made me nervous because I hate spending money and watching my dad spend money he may or may not have, and by then we were tired as shit and after dropping his stuff off emily and I drove home and I tried teaching her how to crochet for a school project. Now I’m hanging out wanting to go to bed and thinking about how everybody else my age working at ACE is doing like 60 hours a week with 2 jobs and saving for college and I’m just sitting here with probably 14 hours a week and fuck. I don’t want to spiral into shit, I just want to keep busy as much as possible. Maybe I’ll ask for as many work hours as possible, maybe I’ll ask my friends to hang out, idk. Right now I jut want to be busy so I don’t have to think about anything. I’ll spend as much time as possible helping my dad set up his apartment, I don’t care.

and today, my day off. ugh god I dont remember what I did, I know I picked up a vent for my mom’s bathroom and I just went to go get Taco Bell with my sister and bought her some more about crocheting and she’s making progress :) tomorrow is my friend’s birthday and last year I made her a felt doll of her fursona, so today I started making a crochet doll for her. so far I have the body and libs, but I still need to make the muzzle, tail, ears, attach everything, and hand-sew on all the markings and glue on button eyes. or maybe felt eyes, idk. my stomach hurts and I got upset because I told my mom my cat may be sick because her pee looked suspicious so I crocheted and watched my little pony and now I have a headache and im just trying to listen to music but really I just want to watch 50 arms videos at once but it wasn't loading right and idk man I dont know what’s happening, I may be going into work tomorrow. Oh I hate when writers make Tim a flat 2D self insert for their pathetic fantasies, especially in regards to Cass. We decided to just do the best we could to build the Bo Jackson of virtual sports. Except without, ya know, the crippling hip injuries that will derail his career before it really gets started.

So, what does this monstrosity of bulging muscles, computer-like intelligence, and boyish charm look like? Well, give our creation a look below, and be sure to let us know why we’re wrong in the comments below. And remember, the only rule is we can only use one character per game entry. Otherwise, this would just be all Backyard Sports characters.

Brain: Pablo Sanchez (Backyard Sports) Runners’ Up: Tom Brady (Madden NFL 09), Tiger Woods (Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14)

Eyes: Vladimir Guerrero (MVP Baseball 2005) Runners’ Up: Barry Sanders (Madden NFL 99), Kobe Bryant (NBA Live 2005)

Barry Sanders is one of the best to ever lace up. What set him apart from other running backs was not just his other-worldly body control that let him slip away from would-be tacklers, but his vision to find a sliver of daylight where no one else could. Plus, he was the subject of one of the best video game commercials of all time.

Mouth: Michael Jordan (NBA 2K11) Runners’ Up: The Announcer (NBA Hangtime), Quentin Sands (Blitz: The League)

Dante Culpepper in Madden NFL 06 was an absolute hoss: impossible to bring down in the backfield and nearly unstoppable once he got up to speed on scrambles. His insane power would make for an excellent base for our monster.

Likewise, the Mailman was a force in NBA Jam. His defense and dunking were off the charts, making him the perfect counterpick when your friend inevitably selected Scottie Pippen and Horace Grant.

However, neither of those characters were inspired by this kind of real-world performance. That hit from Clowney might be the greatest hit anyone has ever laid out in any football game ever. Best of all, his NCAA Football 14 counterpart is capable of the same type of backfield destruction. Good gravy.

Left Arm: Ken Griffey Jr. (The Ken Griffey series) Runners’ Up: Michael Vick (Madden NFL 2004), Mike Tyson (Fight Night Round 4)

Some will probably balk at having Mike Vick’s arm as the option over his legs. That said, the sheer power that his Madden NFL 2004 character was able to generate essentially made EA rewrite the game’s defense for Madden NFL 2005 to compensate. The things he could do in that game were downright silly.

Another potentially surprising inclusion that comes due to our one character per game rule is Mike Tyson. While his turn in Punch-Out!! is legendary, we’re saving that game for something else. Iron Mike’s left arm is earth-shattering in the real and virtual worlds. Watch him throw punches as a 52-year-old man and then imagine taking one of those to the dome in his prime. No thanks!

But, for our money, we’re getting Griffey. If you were a ‘90s kid, there wasn’t a more lovable baseball star than Ken Griffey Jr. He has four different video games with his name on them and is among the best in every single one of them. We’d probably go with his Slugfest version, but you’re welcome to your preference. Regardless, there isn’t a left-arm we want more than The Kid’s.

Right Arm: Waluigi (Mario Tennis) Runners’ Up: Steph Curry (NBA 2K20), Scott Stevens (NHL Hitz 2002)

Steph Curry might just be the best pure shooter in NBA history. His touch from beyond the arc is without equal in the modern game and he makes full-court shots look routine. And Scott Stevens had one of the meanest right hooks in NHL Hitz. If you got into a fight with the New Jersey Devils’ man, you already knew the knockout was coming. But we can do better than either of those.

Waluigi was created in a vat at Nintendo for Mario Tennis. And, to this day, Nintendo refuses to allow him to take his talents to anything other than side games. They’re too scared to see what Waluigi could do to their poster boy in a mainline Mario video game.

We’re not afraid though. Instead, we’ll use what Nintendon’t and graft the best Wa brother’s arm onto our monster, turning his right arm into a machine of sports prowess.

Legs: Devin Hester (Madden NFL 08) Runners’ Up: Didier Drogba (FIFA World Cup 2010), Tony Hawk (Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3)

Excuse the potato quality, but watch this rocket Drogba delivers from almost the centerline in FIFA World Cup 2010. Sure, it’s on a lower difficulty, but the power that the man from the Ivory Coast possessed in that video game was astounding.

Tony Hawk brings a bit more finesse to the party. His level of control with his feet baffles the mind. Later games would let him do more with the board, but THPS3 is the series’ pinnacle. It’s the Hawkman at his best.

However, Devin Hester is the first Madden player to get 100 speed. Seeing him line up for a return caused grown men and women to immediately wet their pants. He was absolutely a game-changer in Madden NFL 08, and we had to include him here.

Mentor: Doc Louis (Punch-Out!!) Runners’ Up: Bo Jackson (Tecmo Super Bowl), Stretch (NBA Street)

Sports aren’t just about your own personal skills. You need someone to teach you how to be great. Jordan had Phil Jackson. Brady had Bill Belicheck. Even an early prodigy like Cristiano Ronaldo needed a top-class manager in Alex Ferguson to completely bring out his visionary skill.

And so, our creation needs his own mentor. While we considered going with an all-time great player like Bo Jackson or an old-timer who still has it in Stretch, we ultimately went with Doc Louis.

After all, if he can take that chump Little Mac and teach him how to beat the video game version of Mike Tyson, imagine what he can do for our hulking behemoth. Our creation will not only outplay his competition but with Doc Louis’ help, he’ll outwit them too.

I hope that v5 arc you mentioned plays into Rebirth. I'm not sure if it was intended to from the beginning but I could forgive it if it were explained away as Manhattan wackery screwing with their brains and making them all into douches. (And the power of their friendship managed to overcome it for *one glorious moment* and then it all fell apart and Kon flew into a wall. It'd be so melodramatic I would cry. Group hugs, everyone.) I hope it will. I'm not sure it will. What do you think?

Are you talking about the Kon one ?I don’t think so, I think the authors were given the instruction to get rid of Kon as much as possibly can and to give Bar Torr a reason for not coming back.The simple reason is that unlike with Tim, they listened to the readers in their complaints (they also might have had some fans *cough*Geoff Johns*cough* who actually realized they were different characters, it’s at least 99.9999999% sure in Kon’s case) I was hoping that’s what Tim’s “death” would be about in ‘Tec Rebirth but apparently they’ve become hell bent on trying to make us believe they’re the same character (ironically enough every time they do, he gets further away, in the end Lobdell wasn’t Tim’s worse writer…. who would have thought).

The thing is, it’s not a matter of behavior, even if Manhattan had made sure they’d be douches, the world would have “adapted” to it. For example Tim had a very loving and present family in N52, both of which he didn’t have preboot so that’d be the universe adapting to how Manhattan changed Tim’s neuronal connection ? Well no, if it had then Tim would have had to live in certain circumstances none of which include loving and nurturing parents (if anything he might become slightly arrogant ? Even then I think he’d just be confident)… What they changed wasn’t the behavior but the personality (for the record : Personality = a person’s core, behavior = personality altered by environment). I still think my Nozaki idea™ (which, by its very nature is a crack theory) actually makes more sense than anything they’ve tried to come up with in recent events…

Honestly out of all the TT’s core 4 Cassie’s the only one who didn’t feel like a different character (she was a watered down, 2 dimensional character, but most of her tropes were actually there for most of her life in the preboot), so beside the 2D feels instead of a fleshed out character one of my main issue is how over-sexualized she was (seriously people she’s 16-17, this is really really really creepy), which is something that already annoyed me in the preboot (luckily not all artists did that), my main issue with her is, as I said in the previous post the secret origin story with her “god” family and while I get that it wasn’t just to excuse her behavior, that it was also to link her to Wonder Woman they didn’t need to do it that way, Wonder Woman could have seen her worth and decide to take her under her wing.I mean I already wasn’t happy with the retcon in TT v3 because, well I don’t especially like her since spoiled brats aren’t my cup of tea, but she did have some great moments and the way she “bullied” Zeus in her origin story well…it was great and learning that she was actually his daughter made the gesture suddenly…well more patronizing, it’s not about seeing a spark of potential in her anymore :/.On that same note, I especially disliked all the “yeah but you know my mom worked at a museum so she wasn’t always there” trope in the preboot, like have you MET Helena Sandsmark ? If anything she was slightly over protective, so you can’t tell me that if she couldn’t get home on time she didn’t have a baby sitter on call for her daughter or, once she was too old, made sure she had already prepared meals to re-heat or simply taught her the basics (like cooking you damn TT Annual). It’s especially annoying since this trope took up at around the time after the death of Tim’s father who in this case WAS neglectful and in some cases verbally abusive and we got songs of “you had the love and care of your father for 15 years”, like no ? His origin story is that he was alone and reported his need for a family on Batman and Robin (then again most of those weren’t actually written by Johns but some of those still were written by him, it’s also worth noting that most of Kon and Cassie’s development as a couple happened on adrenaline whether it’s their first kiss or their ‘first time’ which was why having them saying I love you to each other made me facepalm, but this time I can actually believe it’s due to the fact that they’re still kids and mixing lust+like and love is normal…literally in Kon’s case)…And I’m gonna stop here, I went off track, sorry.

Back to the matter at hand : Cassie. She can still be used, maybe if she met Wally he might spark the beginning of memory in her brain (I mean I don’t think we’ve seen  him talk about Bart yet, I get you’re sad about Linda but c’mon, And what about Max Mercury ?), because Bart was a very good friend of hers, she’s probably the only one in the N52/Rebirth lineup who could get that memory jogged up which could lead to something.

Honestly at this point I don’t care that much anymore, like I’d be happy if they managed to get a feel at least similar to their preboot but it’d be ruined if the writing is similar to what we have today in a lot of comic writings. Aka Superficial. Nice moments are nice, but if there’s nothing behind it then they’re empty (*cough*Batman #16*cough*the Batfam in N52*cough*’Tec Rebirth*cough*). so I’d settle for good characterization and well written relationships (in which case I should at least get my TimKon friendship back, because you can’t characterize and develop them well and not have them be friends :p), even if it means that they won’t be the “core 4″ again (I’d still prefer to have them together, at least Kon, Bart and Tim, because while Cassie was one of the 4 main she still was slightly apart  from these 3, but if it’s well written I wouldn’t mind if they weren’t as close). And maybe finally, FINALLY they’d stop trying to push Tim and Steph together, like, let these poor kids live their lives instead of shackling them to each other and have them be in either generic relationship n°13615360 or toxic relationship n°1351920.

So your idea would be nice if they hadn’t spent N52 and Rebirth making sure the characters couldn’t be used that way.

This week our students bundled up in their warmest gear to venture outdoors in some of the coldest temperatures we’ve had this winter. Students kept warm by staying active, whether skiing on the first Whiteface Day of the season, sledding on snow-covered hills, or hiking up to the crag cabin for a cozy night by the woodstove.

ACADEMICS

Our 6th graders attended the International Children's Winter Games at the Olympic Jumping Complex in Lake Placid this past week to support their classmates, Daven and Abby, in their races. Daven competed in a cross-country sprint relay, and Abby took second place in her biathlon event, earning a silver medal. Everyone was excited to see their friends participate and cheered them on as they competed alongside children from around the world.

In Larry's 8th grade earth sciences classes, students are learning how the snowpack metamorphoses and affects avalanche danger. Students have developed a snow study area in our horse riding ring, where they collect data on how the snowpack is changing. Earlier in the term, a thin layer of blue chalk was spread out over the snow to mark the initial top layer. Over the course of the next few weeks, students will be returning to the site to measure the changes they observe.

In Kayla’s Algebra 1 class, students gave presentations on factoring to their peers and a visiting algebra class. David showed the class how to factor trinomials that take the form x2 + bx + c, where c is positive, while teacher Steph tried out Dylan D.’s innovative method of factoring trinomials of the form ax2 + bx + c. Factoring polynomials is a topic that many students study for the first time in algebra class, and understanding these factoring patterns are a foundational basis for the rest of the term.

ARTS

Art took many forms and colors this week. Colorful crayon art from Katie’s 2D class was on display in the Main Building, and Jenny worked on needle-felting down in the art studio, making a tiny cat using wool from our sheep.

In Courtney’s costuming class, students began learning how to use sewing machines and planned fabric and color choices for characters in the spring production of As You Like It. In the woodshop, 4th, 5th, and 6th graders are building two tool sheds using campus lumber that, once complete, will find homes in the Children’s Garden and Forest Garden spaces.

OUTDOORS

Whiteface Days, some of the most anticipated days of the winter, began this week. Each Tuesday for the remainder of the winter term, students and faculty will spend the afternoon at Whiteface Mountain, the local ski resort, taking skiing and snowboarding lessons and getting in runs on the many beautiful trails.

This past weekend, students including Jessica, Rebecca, and Steven accompanied teachers Kyra and Elie to our campus crag cabin for a double-overnight camping trip. Hiking up to the cabin with their full packs, students spent evenings eating warm meals cooked beside the woodstove and reading aloud to one another. The daytime hours were filled with outside play and some time on the campus ski hill.

On Saturday Tyler J., Frank, Kentaro, Cate, Abe, Quinn, Bill, Noah, and Dylan D. participated in New York State Ski Education Foundation (NYSEF) training.  NYSEF offers a special opportunity for competitive snow-sports athletes to improve their skiing and snowboarding skills with world-class coaches. On Rob and Mallory’s Saturday trip, students including Ella, Sally, and Wendy got in plenty of sledding and outside playtime around campus.

FARM AND GARDEN

While current temperatures may be chilly, the farm is busy preparing for the warm springtime weather to come. Garden manager Tess took inventory of this year’s newly-arrived seed order and began working on the seeding schedule. The farmers and students will begin sowing seeds in the greenhouses in early March. By mid-May plants will be strong enough to transplant into the many garden beds on the property.

In 6th grade Edible Schoolyard class this week, students are learning to cook recipes that represent their family backgrounds, while incorporating ingredients from the farm and surrounding Adirondack region. Student Inyene’s grandfather comes from Nigeria, where jollof rice is common. Her mother sent a recipe so the class could try this delicious and popular meal. Students including Sonya and Tristan chopped onions, garlic scapes, hot peppers, and garlic, all grown on our farm. Stock from our own chickens, homemade hot sauce, and local tomatoes were added to the spicy and fragrant rice dish. As the term continues, the class will continue to prepare recipes that connect to their family backgrounds, inviting classmates to learn about the histories and traditions of others.
