God there’s such a huge goldmine for real media fics in the blue lock fandom. Blue Lock itself is already a tv show in universe, so you don’t even need those convoluted explanations to write a watching the show fic. Then you have the fact that they’re public figures and social media fic, sports articles, interviews. Hell writing a fic from the perspective of a fan watching the show. Ahh tons of things we can explore with this aspect of blue lock!!

Some of my manifestations from last week (with photos)

Surprise gifts

My bestie A and I regularly update each other with about our daily plan for affirming etc to keep each other accountable. I said I was manifesting VIP treatment, put on some subs and affirmed while I was making breakfast (yes I’m not a morning person and make breakfast at nearly noon 😭)

Not even a half hour later, I received a surprise delivery from Amazon:

My friend L, who lives out of state, sent me food and new bowls for the stray cats I feed, and treats for my cats (Stella & Panini are my cats’ names 😹)

VIP treatment

That evening I worked a brand ambassador gig that I booked only a couple days before. I’ve been avoiding working as much as possible lately lol but this one was nearby and paid well. It happened to be a giveaway event partnering with a local radio station and ended up being fun. One of the radio DJs was there, and me as the sponsor brand representative was given the same level of VIP treatment as the radio DJ! There was an event coordinator who basically did all the work and I just got to stand around looking pretty and getting paid for it. 😭

Gift card

After work I got home and found another package from my friend L with a gift card for me 💕

More cat food

A few days later, my neighbor left a huge box of cat food at my door. My cats are getting more spoiled than me 😂

An air fryer

This one is cool because I specifically wanted to manifest this. I had heard about air fryers for a while now and it seemed like something I would use, but I didn’t really feel the need to buy one. A couple weeks ago I was at Trader Joe’s with my mom and the cashier was saying how much he loooved his air fryer and telling me all the things I could make with it. I decided that moment I would just manifest one eventually, and forgot about it.

So the other day my mom comes to pick me up for a family lunch and she has a huge box in her hands - an air fryer?? She says jokingly “happy birthday” - my birthday isn’t for another 4 months! She said she just felt like I needed one 🤷🏻‍♀️

Soo I have this crush-type guy we’ll call D. He’s one of my best friends and we’ve talked nearly every day for 3 years. I can talk to him about anything, including all things supernatural and shifting. We have admitted to having feelings for each other, and even had “online boyfriend” vibes for a while, but we live in different states, and he didn’t want to do long distance. I was sad and anxious about it for a while, but since I found out about loa and shifting, I realized none of it mattered and I could just shift to a reality where we’re together already 😂

Anyway I had become detached and stopped really thinking about him in a romantic way for a while. However, I realized since I basically didn’t care and wasn’t thinking about him, he was becoming distant in response. We hadn’t been really flirty or romantic in a few months, and I hadn’t even talked to him in a week, which was unusual. Although I wasn’t anxious about it or anything, I was still missing talking to one of my best friends. So I just started assuming he would go back to blowing up my phone all day, and I sent him some mental telepathy messages about what I wanted.

Monday morning he messaged me apologizing for being distant. He had been traveling for spring vacation and took a break from his phone. He then basically spent the whole week trying to make up for it, being super attentive, listening to my long ramblings about my void and shifting progress, sending me selfies every day, being more sweet and romantic than he had been in months, and kept telling me how pretty I was 🥰

Losing a follower LOL

This is just a funny one to round out my list. I hadn’t been on tumblr in a bit, and when I went to check my asks, I saw I had 556 followers. I thought “darn I missed the angel number, haha maybe someone will unfollow me so I can get the screenshot.” Not 5 min later when I went to look again, it had happened, and I got the screenshot 😂

*claps* Just finished the newest HB dropped today, lets talk about it! :>

TL;DR version: Found it a... "decent" ride overall (prob among the "better" eps of the S2 lineup so far), though nothing really to write home about compared to other fave eps-

Longer Version: *warning ahead for spoilers*

So, positives out of the way first!

-Striker's back again... and YAY, didn't end up dying after all 🙏😭Was kinda scared with him going against Stolas they were gonna start watering him down to a "mwaha I'm macho~" cliche, but imo he remained pretty competent from start to finish (and even still carried that whole "f*ck the monarchy" attitude towards Goetias while interacting with Stolas (whilst simultaneously working under Stella)... which I really hope the show builds on more for any future appearances down the line)

-M&M themselves got to lead the show in chasing Striker/fighting him (no Blitz or Loona intervention whatsoever), which was also pretty refreshing! 👍 I enjoyed their antics in the Wrath ring and the eventual fight scene itself proved a fairly entertaining one too (*that music change midway though lol*)

-Ngl, I was kinda worried that with Stolas' "damsel" bit it was gonna get old quick... but I'm pleasantly surprised to see the guy actually bite back fairly strong in his own way (both with words and a bit with physical strength too like the stone-stare attempt). And with the inclusion of that "heavenly" rope voiding his powers, it helped offset him feeling too "woobified" compared to past eps .3.

-Blitz and Loona stuck together throughout their visit to the hospital, which proved sweet & funny to watch too ^^. Always nice to see some vulnerable sides in this girl aside from just being moody all the time imo.

-We finally get Andrealphus' canon debut, and he proved to be a fairly decent villain himself too. Being smart enough to recognize the risk in killing off Stolas too quickly (esp. while Via's still his only other heir), and seems to be generally manipulative in steering his sister in the "right" direction (while talking down to her at the same time like a ditzy child), which I'm curious to see played out as well as the season progresses further.

-Bit more of a "minor" point, admittedly... but yay! A Via mention~ 🥺Looks like she'll eventually be more involved in Andre & Stella's plot in the far future, so that'll be interesting to see~ :o

Now... for the negatives? ...Weeeell-

-Stella... just, *sighs*. What more can I say about her that others haven't done so before? 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️While I never really minded her being a bitchy villain tbh, I was expecting at least a little competency written in to her role trying to tear Stolas (+Blitz) apart... but, now? She's... literally just so one-tracked & immature onto wanting Stolas dead (not even reacting to Andre mentioning her daughter during their "plan"), that even her own brother is calling her out of how stupid she's being...? 😐Just... yikes, man...

And like, even all this I wouldn't so much mind if HB was a strictly comedic cartoon/Stella herself was just a one-off threat (like Martha & those old guys from the "Cherub" ep)... but with Stella clearly being framed as the new "big bad" of the series after first calling that hit on Stolas back in "Harvest Moon" (framed all dramatic-like both there and later on in "The Circus")... its otherwise embarrassing that Stella's about as complex as a slice of white bread... 😒😒

(*Heck, if you think about it I don't get why we couldn't have Andrealphus be Stolas' evil ex since he's clearly gonna be given more substance than his sister by the looks of it (esp if those potentially dangerous ice powers of his are any indicator)... but, idk I'm just rambling at this point lol >>*)

-I feel like some of the emotional beats didn't... quite hit as they should've, at points? Like, that last shot of Stolas browsing through his phone messages w/ Blitz seemed like it was trying to address what happened in "Ozzie's" (with Stolas even seeming to respect Blitz' boundaries better while their "deal" is still ongoing)... but then with the sad music playing and Stolas just turning away all sadly at the end, I wasn't sure whether to take that as hopeful or... just angsty, I guess? .-.

-In terms of the humor this time, while def a step-up from the last couple eps... I feel like some of the jokes didn't land as strongly compared to others? Like, for every decent bits like Striker (then later Millie lol) telling off the annoying music band, others like the... erm, "endowed" Striker statue & the karen fight Blitz had at the hospital just felt a bit too... "on-the-nose", I guess? 🤷‍♀️

-While I don't really mind this being a shorter episode, pacing-wise I feel like got a bit rushed at certain points (Like, I'm surprised Andre just kinda randomly showed up right at the first few seconds with how "hyped up" his initial concept was lol). Which could easily be fixed by just tweaking down some of the unnecessary filler bits imo.

Rising Shards: just me rambling about main characters part 1

I wanna post about my characters more on here!!! You can read Rising Shards here! And please support the artist I commissioned for my Rising Shards art, the wonderful Flopicas here or here 😁

Zeta Faleur

Zeta (and all the Rising Shards mains) is a Cani, which means when she hit her awakening moment, her fangs grew in and she got weather control powers. All Cani get fangs, a power, and then maybe other animal type traits as they continue to grow. Oh and they can go to a dimension called the void to fight monsters with a weapon called a bloodsaber. Zeta's the most common type of Cani, one who gets just fangs and a power to start. The other kinds are Exa Cani, who shapeshift back and forth between a base form and a big monster form (all Cani have some shapeshifting powers though) and Kanibari, who are much more animal-like than common Cani and Exa Cani. I'll do a post just about Cani lore at some point so back to Zeta!

Zeta's a shy/anxious but hyper girl that's obsessed with Raina Starlight, especially loving Raina's books and a big TV show she stars on called Tower of Hate and Love. Zeta's big gay, but her first girlfriend Jeans treated her very badly and she's still working to get over that. Zeta's trans, and since her fangs came in her transition has taken huge strides. She's good natured but can get very hyper and when the full group is together can get big stupid in a fun way. She goes to a Cani school, the titular Rising Shards. Zeta lives with her older sister Stella, who has raised her since she was very young due to circumstances Zeta isn't sure of at the start of the series. Her closest friends at Rising Shards are Oka, who she may or may not be getting feelings for stronger than just a friend way, as well as Kalei and Lillia.

Oka Ohri

Oka's a big sweetheart despite her upbringing. Her fangs came in when she was very young so she was shipped off to a harsh militant Cani elementary boarding school that forced her to attempt to train her powers that hadn't even developed yet while "shielding" the students form the outside world. After she turned 16, she was adopted by a member of the wealthy Kilander family and ended up at Rising Shards. Oka's Cani power is plant life control. She loves theater and musicals and is thrilled to join Rising Shards' theater department. She's new to having friends in general but she quickly connects with Zeta and Kalei, and soon becomes close with Lillia as well as they're both in theater. Oka gets embarrassed about how little she knows about modern society due to her old school, and relies on Zeta to help catch her up on things.

This is still one of the best scene of One Piece. I’m watching the series again and I want to ramble about the “Will of D.”

Personally I think it means “Destroyer”. Why? Because, people with D. in their name rarely leave a place without destroying something. Just look at Luffy, every where he goes he would cause a break down building, a law or a norm. Another thing, Cora-san said that “In certain places, the clan of D. have been called by another name, god's archenemy.” So who are those gods? It may be the celestial dragons who like to act high and mighty or maybe there are real gods in the OP universe that Oda will introduce in the future. Whoever it is, the first thing that would come to mind when we hear “god's archenemy” are the devils, but, we also call the gods as the “Creator” (the celestial dragons are also called as the creator of the existing world government). If there are creators, there must be destroyers, right? Here you go, a simple speculation that my simple mind could produce.

But hey there’s more, Actually, the thing that I want to talk about is “why” does this D clan exist. When I saw the scene above, I thought that maybe this kind of thing also happened during the void century, an outlaw befriending a royal then they decided a symbol or a word as a sign of their friendship (But, this became too long without talking about this) So, there’s a possibility that the “D.” isn’t a word. There was a time I thought that “D.” is a NorthStar or Venus, “D” stands for the moon then the “.” as the star, this also influenced by Vivi’s speech.

Oda used lots of of moon and sun(I’m not sure about this one), now we also have planets reference, however, stars are rarely mentioned (please tell me if there are others), I think the references I saw are the clothing designs, the true body of Vegapunk called the "Stella”, and that starfish. Oh, there’s also Shirahoshi (which is an ancient weapon, that’s related to the D’s). We’ll stars isn’t really significant in Japanese folklore, but, it isn’t non existent since we have the stories of Tanabata. Also for sailors, a star like the Polaris is very important. According to the website I read:

The Northern Hemisphere of the planet Earth has a very special star. Polaris, also known as the North Star, sits almost exactly over the axis point of Earth’s rotation. Anyone, looking into a clear night sky, can determine the direction North – no matter what the season, no matter what the time of night. An older English name, attested since the 14th century, is lodestar "guiding star"(ok, another reference), similar in meaning to the old German and Old Norse names. The name Polaris in English goes back to the 17th century (just before the pirates; time). It is a contraction for the Latin stella polaris "pole star". Another Latin name is stella maris "sea-star" denoting its importance to sailors. Navigation by the stars – celestial navigation – is believed to have started in the trackless wilderness of Earth’s deserts, and was almost immediately adopted by fledgling mariners. The sea is a treacherous place to travel. Not only are there no landmarks (land-marks) but the water is constantly moving – often not going the direction that a sailor wants to go. Sailing against a strong current could – and in the early days of sail, actually did – mean a ship was actually traveling backwards. Add to this that the wind rarely blew in the direction a ship needed in order to sail, and it’s easy to see why navigation was a tricky matter at best. -end of reference

Ok so now, here are the reasons why I thought that “D.” is a star (polaris).

1. The “D’s” are scattered everywhere, and they come in different form. Like the star in our sky.

2. Some of the D’s we known are like a star that guided and give light to others, Luffy with his nakama and people he meet throughout his journey, Garp with Coby and maybe Ace. Rouge and the sacrifice she made so Ace could see the light. Saul gave Robin a the will to survive, so on and so forth.

3. This reason is just me pushing this, the flat map of one piece looks like an eight pointed star, like a compass.

WARNING: MINOR SPOILERS FOR STAR TREK ENTERPRISE

tmw you watch a show, and there’s a two parter, and you’re like “damn 7 million people are dead, but I can’t wait to see them destroy the baddies and get back to exploration and good vibes,” but then it’s not actually a two parter and it’s an entire arc, and you’re stuck between being worried about the characters and being excited for the potential to explore moral ambiguity and moral dilemma.

So, I just started the third season of Enterprise, and I am simultaneously vibin and not vibin. Might re-watch an episode of Voyager for the good feelings of found family, or I might just continue to internally scream about the character arcs that could come out of this season of Enterprise.

"Secret S/O" comforting Stella after a fight with her family

Youd found her in your room.

She was hunched over, staring at her hands.

She had let herself in. Again.

The two of you had been childhood friends, the two of you became very close, and like so many boys and girls, you had fallen for her.

But, as you were from a lower noble family, you could never be together.

So determined to have her hand, you spent years increasing your social standing.

But before you even got close to her, she was already betrothed to Stolas.

You never gave up hope, though. Instead you dedicated yourself to becoming a demon worthy of her affection.

It had been years since you had last seen each other when you found her on your doorstep.

She stormed in, almost barrelling you over.

She was livid, rambling and ranting on about her husband.

Stolas being your least favourite subject, you quickly tried to calm her down, asking her what had happened with Stolas.

That seemed to snap the poor woman out of her anger filled stupor.

She broke down, bursting into tears, collapsing into your chest, she cried out that her husband had cheated on her.

It took a lot of self control not to snap.

Stolas had this amazing, beautiful, intelligent woman practically handed to him, and Stolas CHEATS ON HER!

You took several deep breaths before turning back to the distraught woman. Now was not the time to get upset.

Stella needed you and you'd be damned if you weren't gonna be there for her.

You held her close, quetly consoling her as you let her cry against you.

You made sure she knows you were there.

You were always there for her.

And so a patern began.

Sella would go through something, afterwards she'd come running to you, where you would consol her.

But normally, she would announced her entrance, whether intentionally or not.

A scream or a huff, she'd stomp her feet or slamming a door. Something.

But this time was different.

This time you found her.

She just sat there, on the edge of your bed, staring into her lap.

You came up besides her, pulling her against you.

'What happened?' You asked her, knowing this time would be bad.

'We had a another fight.' She said, her voice hollow.

'You've had lots of fights, you've never been like this. Why is this time different?' You asked, unsure of how to approach her.

'Octavia' She said seemingly dumbfounded, 'Stolas and I were having another fight.' She took a deep shaky breath. 'That bastard slept with that retched IMP in OUR bed again."

Her breathing became heavy, "So I screamed at him, I told him he was an embarrassment to out family.'

You had heard this part many times.

Stolas showed little respect for there relationship, something that infuriated you to no end.

'But this time... this time, Octavia got involved...' Stella said, in disbelief.

'She went on about how all I care about is our image, she says I don't really care about Our family. And all of a sudden, I'm the bad guy!?' She said incredulously, tears welling in her eyes.

'Can't she see im the one trying to keep our family together.' She said bitterly.

'He's the one who cheated. He ruined everything! I'm not the one who betrayed OUR family. I'm not the one who... destroyed our marriage.'

She clutched her face, tears running down her cheeks. 'She's always loved him more...' she whispered, her voice void of emotion.

Wrapping your arms around her you brought her onto your lap. Quetly shushing her, running your hand down her back.

Despite the situation, you released a small chuckle. 'Hey, wanna know something, something i've never told another soul?'

Wiping her eyes she looked up at you. You meeting her light crimson gaze.

'When we were young, you were my only friend.' I began, swallowing the lump in my throat. 'But despite being of lower stock, you never thought less of me. And I'm unabashed in telling you that... I fell in love with you'

The words hung heavy in the air.

'And all these years later... I'm still in love with you.' You turn away from her. 'I would have told you when we were young, but there was no way I could ever be with you... I was to far beneath you.'

'So I dedicated my youth to becoming your equil, to becoming a demon that could be accepted as your partner. To becoming your equil.'

You took her hand into your own, running your hand over the silver band on her finger. 'But when I even reached the point of having the slightest chance... you already belonged to Stolas.'

'I had nothing. No purpose in life. So I did the only thing I could. I dedicated myself to become a demon...' you looked down at Stella, the Owl stared up at you, a mixture of shock and recognition across her face. '...to become a demon, worthy of your love.'

Looking down, you cupped her cheek, looking deep into her eyes, you told her. 'I can't bare to see you go through this anymore, Stella. You are the most amazing demon I've ever ever met and seeing you go through so much for someone who treats you so poorly, you deserve better than this, Stella, you deserve someone who loves you.'

You felt hesitant with what you were about to say, but said it regardless. 'I know I have the most to gain from you being disenchanted with Stolas.'

'And even I have questioned my intentions. But I give you my word, I only wish the best for you... even if that means your with Stolas. I want you to be happy.' You finished, looking away.

It felt like a weight had been lifted off of your shoulders. Youd kept all that in for so long, no matter what happened now, at least you got to be honest with her.

You felt Stella's hand cup your cheek turning you to meet her gaze.

She looked so... confused?

She pulled you close, your noses almost touching. 'Are you sure you want this?' You ask her, you needed to know this was a decision she was making truthfully.

Stella looked you deep in the eyes and with such conviction, she told you 'I have never been so sure of something in my life.'

And with that said, she pulled you into a deep kiss.

You instantly began to return the kiss, bringing your hands to her face as you poured decade's of pent up love and affection into the kiss.

You didn't hold anything back, the two of you roaming each other's bodies like two lovers who had been separated for millennia.

But that could have just been wishful thinking on your part.

Still locked in a heated kiss, Stella pulls open your jacket as you undid her dress. The two of you shed your clothing faster than you thought possible.

Before you entered her, you asked, 'Are you sure this. Is what you want?' Stella stared at you for a moment, before she pulled you into another passionate kiss.

In that moment, you were in utter bliss. You had finally became one with the woman you've loved all your life.

The two of you spent the night together, wrapped in a passionate embrace, making love deep into the night.

You awakened early the next morning. The two of you just basked in the afterglow, just holding each other close.

You layed a kiss between Stella's eyes before asking her 'What happens now?'

Stella stayed silent for several seconds before sighing. 'I don't know... But, Stolas won't give up his little Imp' she spat the word, giving a huff before continuing 'And even if he did, I'm not giving you up. Not after all hes put me through.'

That took the wind out of you.

'Is that all this was, payback?' you asked self consciously.

Realising the double meaning of her words she grabbed your face, before telling you firmly. 'No! You hear me? This was not revenge.' Pulling you close she told you 'You... You were the only person who was there for me... I dont know what's going to happen next, but there isn't another person in hell I want to be with.'

You couldnt help but smile at that, before pulling her in for another kiss.

No, you couldn't imagine a better place to be either. And come hell or high water, you weren't gonna give her up.

You and Stella were together and nothing, not even Stolas could change that now.

Seriously I’m gonna ramble a little bit on both the trailer and yes I did read the preview of the tie-in novel.

Okay, first. Let’s discuss the obvious: the casting and whitewashing.

Winx had 3/6 of the Main Characters be poc. And while the series does have it’s problems with that, this is a new level of clownery. Especially Flora. They just replace her with a white lady and call her ‘Terra’ as if it’s not.... I don’t even know what they’re thinking with that.

I am white af though, so I’ll leave the discussion on that to actual poc and just say I agree.

Now to the characters they deleted or changed completely:

They got rid of Tecna which fucking sucks. Probably because they’re making this bootleg Hogwarts and Tecna’s thing of Technology Magic doesn’t fit with the old fantasy ‘we still use quills and ink on parchment’ vibe they’re going with.

Speaking of bootleg Hogwarts, even Faragonda wasn’t spared as she got a name change and is more.... sketchy Dumbledore.

Icy, Stormy and Darcy are being replaced with a single girl called ‘Beatrix’. Who wants to make bets on everyone nicknaming her ‘Trix’? Anyone?

Sky and Riven are the only Specialist that made it, but there will probably be other Specialists that are just. Renamed versions of the other ones. Sky probably going to be just romance drama but Riven.... what did they do to my boy??? Some edgy white boy with a knife. They hammer in the fact that he does drugs too. Like it’s his first pov scene and he’s like ‘yeah I spent summer vacation getting high and I’m gonna skip class to go in the woods and get high again’.

And as for the main five Winx that made it? Oh boy. Oh boy oh boy oh boy.

Idk what to say about Terra because she’s trying to be Flora but really isn’t. Musa is kind of a bitch. Stella is also a bitch in that ‘popular prep’ way. Bloom is the epitome of ‘I’m not like other girls! I don’t want to be popular and preppy!’.

Aisha seems to be the only one who’s decent so far, but I don’t have much faith.

Now to some other notes!

No wings???? Really???? The show is called Winx! They’re Faeries!!! Why would you get rid of the wings????

God the fashion. Even if you’re making it dark and edgy can you please look good? And let the girls keep their color schemes! Bloom should be blue, not red. Red is Musa’s color. Purple is Tecna’s but she’s not here. Aisha got the green and Flora was pink.

Bloom discovering her powers in the reboot is.... getting in a fight with her mom and burning the house down and now she’s all guilty. It also seems like the twist is going to be that she’s one of the evil ‘burned ones’ that did some scary shit and disappeared years ago but ‘I guess she’s good but we’re gonna be scared of her and others will discriminate’.

But you want to know what pisses me off most about the ‘Edgy, Dark and Griity Reboot’?

They didn’t have to change so much because Winx is dark af anyway.

Let’s look at Bloom’s original backstory from the series! The planet of Domino was attacked, all it’s people trapped in a void dimension except for Bloom, who was a baby sent to Earth, and Daphne, who was cursed to be some kind of Spirit. The planed itself is now a frozen wasteland.

You want to make it darker? Focus on it more! Focus on how an entire planet was wiped out less than 20 years ago. How there are a handful of survivors who mourn those they lost. How Daphne is traumatized as FUCK for being a cursed Spirit for years! Bloom feeling guilty despite having been a literal baby and couldn’t have done anything! If you really want to darken it up, don’t trap everyone in a void dimension, just kill them(which to be fair I did in my reboot but you know).

And that’s just Bloom’s backstory! That doesn’t even touch what actually happens throughout the series!

Basically if you want to reboot Winx Club, don’t make it ‘dark and gritty’. Just make it more mature and have them explore the darker themes that already exist.

André Øvredal’s adaptation of Alvin Schwarz‘s children’s classics Scary Stories to Tell In The Dark is a PG-13 horror movie with bite.

Stories hurt,

Stories heal.

If we repeat them often enough,

And they become real.

These words run throughout André Øvredal‘s adaptation of the morbidly popular children’s anthologies Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. That’s certainly true of the tales contained in this series of books, for spooky children of a certain age group at least. Kids growing up in the ’80s and ’90s cut their fangs on Alvin Schwarz’s short, almost fairy-tale like horror stories. That’s a big part of the challenge of adapting beloved and well-known source material like Scary Stories. Characters like the woman missing her big toe or the haunted scarecrow have crawled, scraped, bled, and groaned throughout the nightmares and imaginations of a whole generation. Will the film adaptation live up to the horrors we’ve conjured in our own minds?

In the case of Øvredal’s Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark the answer is yes. Well, sort of. In their own way. First of all, the FX are top-notch. CGI has evolved to such a state that the creatures, like The Big Toe Lady or The Woman With Black Eyes and Long Black Hair are suitably terrifying. It also adds onto the original material, connecting the stories together into one cohesive narrative via a clever connecting story.

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark begins on Halloween Night in the town of Mill Valley, Pennsylvania. The year is 1968. We meet Stella (Zoe Colletti), Auggie (Gabriel Rush), and Chuck (Austin Zajur). They’re you’re usual batch of misfits, the perennial horror underdogs, who decide to go out for one last Halloween, “in the last year of their childhoods,” as a voiceover intones at the beginning of a film. Enter Tommy (Austin Abrams), your classic horror movie bully. The misfits decide to fight back, throwing a flaming bag of human feces into Tommy’s car. He and his henchmen are understandably upset, chasing the trio into a drive-in movie theater.

Here they meet Ramon (Michael Garza), a seemingly itinerant Mexican “not from around there,” as is pointed out multiple times throughout the film, most often by Police Chief Turner (Gil Bellows), who’s convinced that Ramon has something to do with the rash of disappearances that are about to begin.

Ramon saves Zoe, Auggie, and Chuck from Tommy and they all decide to go to a haunted house to nightcap the evening. They break into the old Bellows’ estate, long abandoned, where the ghost of poor Sarah Bellows is still supposed to dwell, after hanging herself with her own hair.

The now-quartet quickly discover a secret – a hidden room. This was where Sarah lived. It was said, back in the day, that kids would creep into the house and whisper, “Sarah, tell me a story,” and she would, whispering creepy manifestations of her twisted imagination, warped from years in the dark. This was where she told them those stories.

Zoe, the resident horror writer and obsessive, discovers Sarah’s book of stories amongst her things. Meanwhile, Chuck gets separated and locked in a closet, where he is given a glimpse of a distant time, when the house was still in repair; an old woman and an obsidian-black obsidian simply staring at him, ominously.

All four are quickly realizing that something’s not right, that there’s something going on. They begin to notice the book is changing. New stories appear and begin to come true.

“There’s something wrong with that book.”

From here, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark is a non-stop coal mine ride, ramping up and up and up, like plunging into an inky black void. It’s a ghoulishly good time! For one thing, as i mentioned above, the special FX are really something special, if perhaps a bit Mike Flanagan-esque. We’ve gotten to a point where computer-generated spooks and spectres can legitimately disturb, and they do, in Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. Characters like The Lady With The Black Eyes and Long Black Hair and the Me Tie Dough-Ty Walker stand to enter the annals of classic horror characters, similar to The Bent-Neck Lady or The Floating Man from Mike Flanagan’s The Haunting of Hill House.

This is also good news for a whole new generation of young horror lovers, towards whom Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark is aimed. It’s PG-13 rating is one of the best things it has going for it. It means that Young Adults and teenagers will get to experience its dread. Its perhaps even a bit scarier for it. I personally find PG-13 horror to be a bit more effective, at times, as directors are forced to get creative rather than just relying on shock and gore.

There are some moments that are legitimately terrifying in Scary Stories. I had the good fortune to see this film on opening night at the undoubtedly haunted popcorn palace The Laurelhurst Theater on 28th and Burnside in Portland. There were several moments of loud gasps from the crowd throughout the film, followed by nervous laughter. I could hear people whispering to each other, “This is scary,” and we were all 12 again, together, collectively.

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark is reminiscent of the recent Goosebumps movies, both visually and in terms of pacing, as well as a similar amount of comic relief. It’s much scarier than Goosebumps, however, so keep that in mind when showing to your spooky kids. It’s truly got something for horror lovers of all ages, almost guaranteed to become a new horror staple and addition to the canon, to be beloved during the dark, creeping times of year for years to come.
