The Public Domain Discourse, as I decided to call it ("characters and works should never enter the Public Domain because that's disrespectful to the original artist") is fascinating to experience.
You see, I usually stay very successfully away from fandom discourses. The way I'm doing this is by completely ignoring everything and everyone, and just doing my own thing. Said thing consists to a good part out of older media, because old media fandoms are chill as fuck. There are usually around five people at a time talking about whatever thing, and it is very easy to be friendly if you know that there are only five of you. Even if you don't like something that someone does, you put some effort into ignoring it and focus on the fact that at least this person likes the same thing you do. I have read fic before that features a ship that borderline squicks me out, because it also featured a pulp hero I was hyperfocussing on at the moment and couldn't find anything else. And I had a lovely conversation with the author in the comment section. A lot of old media fandoms is just telling people that the Thing even exists. Or someone draws a picture, maybe writes a story. I have seen a lot of analysis.
So that's what it is normally like. Now suddenly in the middle of it all burst a bunch of randos yelling about how the Public Domain shouldn't exist, because what if somebody makes Bad Art with it. DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA HOW AMAZING SOME BIGGER PROFILE ART ABOUT SOME OF MY FAVORITE HEROES WOULD BE?!

It’s official my favorite thing to see people do now that steamboat willie is public domain is to draw Mickey doing non Disney brand things. (Ex. Smoking a blunt) like I know people did it before but now they can do it without worrying about a lawsuit

I feel like a whole lot of people only learned the words "public domain" yesterday because there is a shit ton of misinformation and fearmongering being spread about Mickey Mouse now that he's public domain. And the only people being helped by this are Disney executives.
Yes, you can call him Mickey Mouse. The name Mickey Mouse is now Public Domain. He's literally named in the title card for Steamboat Willie and the other animations and promotional posters that are Public Domain.
Yes, you can give him gloves. There are multiple Public Domain versions of him wearing gloves.
Yes, you can draw him in color. First of all, there are Public Domain versions of him drawn in color. Second of all, the entire point of the Public Domain is that you are free to transform and update the subject. That means you can give Mickey Mouse any outfit or combinations of outfits you want as long as the ones you use aren't already copyrighted by Disney.
And more but my laptop is overheating. Feel free to add on more corrections to misinformation being spread.
Edit to add:
Yes, you can have him talk! Just because The versions in Steamboat Willie, The Galloping Gaucho and Plane Crazy don't talk doesn't mean that Disney is the only one allowed to make him talk. That's not how the public domain works. It just means you have to create your own voice for him.
Edit again to add:
Yes, you can sell art of him. Yes, you can put him on a shirt and sell it. Yes, you can sell paintings of him. As long as you are not using a design still protected by Disney's copyright, and are not deceiving people into thinking it's official Disney merch, you can sell it! That's the whole point of the Public Domain!
And no, people, for Pete's sake. It is not and never has been illegal to draw modern Mickey Mouse. That's fair use. You can draw anything you want. Copyright stops you from selling things. You have always been allowed to draw any Mickey Mouse you want. Disney will not appear out of thin air and arrest you and your family because you have "pie slices on the pupil". That is literally not how any of this works, especially not how the Public Domain works!

MICKEY IS PUBLIC DOMAIN NOW!
Sources [1] [2] [3]
Tumblr media
Image from KALW Public Media, linked [3].
Though Mickey Mouse himself is not yet in the public domain, the version we see from him in Steamboat Willie is. This is, to put it bluntly, HUGE.
Mickey has been in copyright for 95 years- well over the 75 typically granted. With this lift on this particular incarnation of the character, he is now able to be used by fans legally without Disney killing them in court.
If you DO use him, same as with Pooh from last year, you have to specify that you are using THIS version of Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse (and also Pete was there too). This Mickey is a lot more of a scoundrel then we think of now, so make sure you're not making him too nice, lol.
But now, if you want to include Mickey in a fan game, a book, your own animated short, a comic, ect, and you wanted to make money off of it, NOW YOU LEGALLY CAN!!
YOU CAN: - Draw him - Sell merch of him - Animate him - Parody him - Build upon him - Write him
YOU CANNOT: - Name a building after him (trademark) - Name a comic after him (trademark) - Pretend to be sponsored by Disney (trademark/ownership) - General infringement on other Mickeys - Delude the trademark (like when people made a slasher movie of Winnie the Pooh, apparently??) [3]
Point is, THIS IS HUGE. Copyright usually only lasts 75 years, and Disney had managed to get an extra 20 years on Steamboat. Now that that's lifted, ANYONE can use Steamboat, it's characters, and it's ideas.
GO NUTS!

You are encouraged to print or otherwise share these with as many people as possible!
Tumblr media
[ID: A single-page pamphlet titled, "Mickey Mouse is now in the Public Domain!", with "public domain" underlined and bolded for emphasis. The body of the flyer reads:
"The copy-rights for the animations “Steamboat Willie”, “The Gallopin Gaucho”, “Plane Crazy”, and several promotional posters for them have expired!
But what does this mean for you?
Let’s start with the shorter list:
What you cannot do:
Trick people into thinking the art you are selling of Mickey Mouse is official Disney merch, or sanctioned by Disney
Sell art of Mickey that includes *specific designs* still protected by Disney’s copyright
What you can do:
Share, edit, remix, remaster, and sell the original animations that are now in the Public Domain.
Sell digital, traditional, and written art that you have made of Mickey, Minnie, and Pete, with no permission required!
Add new colors and patterns to Mickey, Minnie, and Pete’s classic outfits, or design them brand new outfits altogether!
Create new stories with Mickey, Minnie, and Pete, as animations, movies, books, or comics, and sell them!
Some common misconceptions…
Some people think that you have to stick to the original designs to the letter, IE: keeping them black and white, not having gloves on Mickey, and not letting them talk – but this is just a misunderstanding of what the Public Domain is! You can design and use them in any way you want, as long as you aren’t using a *specific design* still protected by Disney’s copy-rights. They can have color outfits, gloves, and talk! They belong to all of us now! Have fun!"
Framing the flyer at the top right, middle left, and bottom right are three pictures of Mickey Mouse with red shorts, a tan face, brown shoes, and gold buttons, with a pink tongue when his mouth is open. In the first, at the title, he has his arms thrown into the air with joy. In the second, at the "what you can do" section, he is looking excitedly at something in front of him. In the last, at the "common misconceptions" section, he's wearing a black hat with a red stripe, posed with a smile as he looks at something in front of him. Each is posed to be facing the text, as though they are reacting to it with excitement. End ID.]

Hi, I love your writing a lot, read all your treasure island stuff a few weeks ago!
May I request a reader that absolutely adores mickey mouse? Like has a mickey plush collection, has pictures of themselves with Mickey at disney land and little Mickey knick knacks like a backpack and all that, please?
with Photo Negative Mickey, Undying, Mascot Photo Negative Mickey and Willie if that would be alright ^^
Aw thanks!!
.......
Everyone in the SSA knew you loved all things Mickey Mouse.
Hell, you even incorporated it into your uniform, with your cap sporting Mickey ears and your Mickey-themed bag complete with keychains and pins. You also had a little plush of the mouse on your desk.
It was a dream come true to work at the abandoned Treasure Island. You basically got paid to study your favorite character!
Even if the various toons, suits, and mascots weren’t exactly carbon copies of him..you still cared for them a lot, never being afraid of them.
Photo Negative Mickey was the first one you met, and he likes your style.
He still tries to creep you out with his “head coming off” trick, but when you got trapped on the island, he doesn’t really wanna kill you. And he’ll insist you’re spared.
Undying was one you were especially excited to see.
You reassure him you’re not scared bc he reminds you of those mascots you used to take pictures with.
Unfortunately you have no idea he’s a person trapped inside one, though you still befriend him nevertheless.
The same goes for the Mascot PNM. Although unlike Undying, he tried attacking you with his mallet until you grabbed your Mickey plushie to shield(?) yourself and he stops, realizing you’re the human his toon counterpart spoke of.
So it’s a rocky start, but two you become good friends after that.
Willie was similarly hostile in the beginning. He saw your keychain of his steamboat and accused you of stealing it, taking your bag and running off into the forest.
It took you forever to chase him down, though once you found him it was only then you realized...he just wanted the keychain.
As much as you hated to sacrifice your merch, seeing his smile when you handed it to him made it okay with you.
During all of this, Mother’s kept a close eye on you, but seeing you make her children happy shows that your intentions are good. So she’ll stay off your tail for a while.

i like when Disney traded a real employee to universal (the guy didn't really care he just said "I'm gonna be a trivia question one day!" But still pretty fucked up) for the rights to Oswald, made Epic Mickey, decided that was too dark and made Epic Mickey 2, cancelled the series because EM2 didn't sell well, then proceeded to not use him for anything but merch until his copyright was about to expire, where they made a new cartoon with his og design in an attempt to artificially extend the copyright (they tried the same thing with Steamboat Willie), and now he's public domain but no one cares. Disney is so cool.
I actually own an Oswald the Lucky Rabbit doll and I used to hold him every night because I didn't want him to feel like he'd been forgotten.

Another whirlwind day at the parks. We only do two full days at Disneyland because we have a specific plan for what we want to do, and we always have the mindset of rolling with the punches and having contingency plans when things don't go to plan.
Yes, technically I am a Disney adult, aka a millenial or Gen-Xer with a decent amount of disposable income and a slight obsession with Disney. I know what to do, I plan ahead, I watch a lot of Disney Park Youtubers, I know what to do and where to go and how to maximize my time in the parks, all without spending anything extra on Lightning Lanes or Genie +.
You may ask, what's your secret? I say, I try to go with the flow.
We don't rope drop anymore. The last time we did was for the opening of Rise of the resistance, the Star Wars ride in Galaxy's Edge. The virtual queue required guests to physically be in the parks to use the app. Thankfully that's not required anymore. So, our usual plan is to get up at around 8am and grab the free breakfast offered by the hotel before it shuts down at 9:30. Then we wander into the park and check on stand-by wait times and if anything is under 30 minutes, we consider riding it.
This morning, we started at California Adventure, looking in the shops for all the new anniversary merch. I wish there were more Oswald the Lucky Rabbit stuff in general, though his ear hats were available. But I don't wear ear hats or ear bands at the parks. I did more searching of 100th anniversary medallions. One of the shops on Buena Vista Street had a kiosk so I bought its collection of 4, Steamboat Willie Mickey, classic Minnie, Oswald, and an image of the DCA Walt and Mickey statue.
Wandered into Cars Land and did Mater and Luigi's rides. We don't usually do Radiator Springs Racers anymore since the queue never really goes under an hour. We had a reservation at Lamplight Lounge for lunch, but we managed to squeeze in Toy Story Midway Mania before our check-in time arrived. It's been a while since I'd played, my arm got sore. I always seem to get the beaver prize for this ride.
Lamplight Lounge was just as tasty and filling as ever. We ordered steak nachos and the brussel sprout Caesar salad to share while we watched folks get launched at the Incredicoaster. Fun!
I even managed to get into the virtual queue for Runaway Railway again, at the expense of our poor server who had to repeat herself because I was too distracted by my attempt. Checked at 1pm for a 6:30pm return time. I didn't care, though because I got in!
Got stuck on the Little Mermaid ride for a surprising amount of time, right when your seashell eases down that short hill as you go "under the sea". It was long enough that my back was starting to ache from the pressure of leaning backwards. I am old.
Park hopped back to Disneyland, did Autopia and Mr. Toad again, browsed through the shops. I had a healthy amount of redemption dollars from my Disney Visa card, and I was hell-bent on getting souvenirs. In addtion to the 100th anniversary medallions, I picked up a couple of new pins, Mr. Toad in his Motor Car and Fix-it Felix and Wreck-it Ralph. Also paid for a few snacks on the points as well. Ice cream for J. and a pickle for me. Yes, I said pickle. I love the Disneyland pickles. Highly recommended if you're a pickle fan. And I am.
It was started to get really really cold and I wasn't wearing enough layers and I was considering giving up on getting on Runaway Railway and just head back to the hotel room to rest before the 9pm World of Color showing. But as we were settling into the room I got an alert saying that my boarding group for Runaway Railway was being called and I had an hour to get in line for the ride. I'm so glad I opted for a hotel across the street because we got back in record time and we were able to ride Runaway Railway again!
After that, we went back to DCA for World of Color. Had a hot link corn dog for dinner while we waited. The new WOC show is special for the 100th anniversary of the Disney company, and it's meant to show how even one person can change the course of things. It started with Walt and then every other Disney character featured sure had the HERO'S JOURNEY thing going on. I liked it, though not as much as the OG WOC show.
By the end of the night, I was freezing, I couldn't feel my fingers, so we called an end to our Disneyland adventure and headed back to the hotel room, where I had a nice long warm soak in the bathtub and started to feel human again. It got to the point where my fingers didn't have fine motor control and I got a glimpse of my future when I will be old and unable to unbutton pants without struggling. Yikes.
So, checking out of the hotel tomorrow morning, will grab breakfast and will hopefully be able to check in early at the Marriott for Gally!
Onwards.
