Funfacts about PTM Characters!
Still chilling out from finishing my thesis, but I had a few fun facts about the side characters for PTM that I'd thought you'd all enjoy in the meantime! It's gonna include some of the canon characters as well as the ocs!
This includes some very minor, but not story defining, spoilers for PTM so proceed with caution! As a reminder, PTM takes place a school year after the current timeline!
Canon Characters:
Jade and Floyd made bets on who would get together with their crush first during their 3rd year. The loser has to let the winner(s) plan and execute the most humiliating way to confess. Neither twin is winning. Azul is currently winning with his bet of “neither of you will, you cowards.”
Ortho went to most of Idia's classes during his time at NRC, so he was allowed to “skip” repeating those years when becoming an official student by taking a competency exam. However, he is still staying for a year since the test only allows for core classes and not his electives. He's happy to do so, though.
Idia stayed at NRC to complete his internship with the school, much to his disappointment. He works as a Technomage Intern with the college's technology department.
The overblot cast got closer with each other and Yuu than expected over the summer due to Crowley and S.T.Y.X. requiring them to take part in a “summer camp” to monitor them and their health. Leona still hates Malleus though. Malleus is still mostly unaware of this.
Malleus still does not know how to use technology. Sebek and Yuu have a weekly call with him via a looking glass mirror that acts like a video call. Malleus enjoys it very much.
Kalim switched places with Jamil and is now vice housewarden, while Jamil is now housewarden. Neither's families were happy about this, but were shut down by Kalim being surprisingly firm about his decision. To everyone's surprise, Kalim does very well as a vice over a housewarden, though Scarabia has had significantly fewer parties since the switch.
Nearly all the clubs that had the 3rd years as captains/heads had one of the 2nd years take over into their 3rd year. Ruggie is now Spelldrive Captain, Azul is head of the Board Game Club, and the Gargoyle Studies Club is headed by Yuu. The Pop Music Club is also more formalized now, with Kalim as the head. The Science Club and Film Studies have an NPC 3rd year as heads.
Yuu isn't actually that bad at singing as everyone has (and will continue to do so) suggested. Most of the student body had classical training growing up as part of their privileged upbringing, and Yuu has to compete with that.
At least two pairs of canon characters will get together at the end! Guess who tehe.
OC:
Silas likes to eat bugs and regularly digs in the dirt behind Ramshackle to find something crunchy to munch. They did it once in front of Jamil and the poor guy screamed in horror.
Yev became the new Pomefiore housewarden due to being able to produce the best posion, as per tradition. However, he's actually quite bad at being a housewarden and his vice is the one that everyone tends to listen to.
The Salson triplets are from the TWST equivalent of Salem, and have a North easterner accent, similar to Boston I think. Wynfred and Marion mimic English, or Rosarian, accents, but Silas does not.
There are two more mermen in the school, minus the canon cast and two ocs. They aren't important to the story, but their names are Mariano De La Reyes and Benji (last name still pending). They're based off of Marina and Benjamin from the third Little Mermaid movie.
Speaking of mermen, Aspen is a squidmer and is based on the colossal squid. He's about 18 ft long and still growing. Tony is based on a tiger shark, but is the runt of his litter, hence why he's so small.
Tommy, the white rabbit beastmen that was introduced as Riddle's new vice, is notorious for always running late. He never has actually been late to anything due to parkouring everywhere and climbing the castle walls to enter the classrooms through the windows. Floyd learned how to parkour from him. Riddle hates everything about this.
Briefly mentioned in the last chapter was the botany professor, Kallpa. Kallpa is based on Kronk and the uncle of Yev.
Nurse Goethel has a wife and two daughters that she brings with her to family days on campus. The daughters are roughly age 11 and 13 and each time they've come have designated a student as the new person they want to marry. Two years ago it was Leona and Trey, last year it was Azul and Jamil, this year it's Jack and Ortho. There is no reasoning behind their decision, it's all based on vibes.
James has met Jade and Floyd when they were all very young. James was on his Great Aunt's ship, who was meeting with Papa Leech for unknown reasons. James only remembers them due to their heterochromia eyes, but the twins don't remember anything.
Marion has a really strong sense of smell that is on par with the beastmen. He hates Pomefiore because the dorm and students are heavily perfumed and it gives him a migraine.
Yaqub actually has a twin brother that goes to RSA. He thinks it's funny that it turned out that way and they like to shittalk their schools together on the weekends. RSA is much more chaotic and full of troublemakers than NRC realizes.
At least two pairs of the freshmen will get together at the end of PTM, but it will be a surprise as to who!

What if (for funny purposes) Azul doesn't like octopus but loves squid. He'll decimate a good plate of calamari.
Azul calamari lover is actually so funny though-
Idek why I'm just imagining some new students, who's a squidmer llistening to azul chiding the twins for eating octopus, only to see him scarfing down his lunch of... you guessed it - calamari.
And YOU KNOW WHAT I'm sorry I just had to do this even if it contradicts one of my own hcs:
Short Azurido Fic
All Riddle could do was stare down at the calamari in shock. Hadn't Azul always stressed the importance of not eating octopus? Had he no respect for his own words?
"You're a hypocrite," he huffed, feeling those odd, slimy appendages of his cross against one another in indignation. Azul just laughed.
"Well, squid isn't your true species, now is it?" he said. "After all, no one could've even anticipated this would be your merform. I myself thought you'd be a goldfish."
Riddle's eye twitched. He now understood why Azul got so huffy whenever the twins ate octopus. What he couldn't understand was why Azul was happily eating calamari in front of him, when he was a squidmer.
"Still-"
"And why exactly does my love for squid fluster you so greatly?" Azul asked, a wretched smirk ghosting upon his lips. It was wretched in part due to its' infuriating nature, yes, but moreso due to how it left Riddle's mouth dry, face flushed as he struggled to respond.
At the end of his painful deliberation, Riddle could only muster up a mumbled "shut up". His tentacles betrayed him, however, wrapping around Azul.
"It looks like you're handing over your tentacles to me, Riddle!" Azul said. "You'd really like to offer me calamari that badly? How benevolent of you."
Riddle just sighed, though his tentacles pulled in Azul even further.
Perhaps he didn't mind Azul's odd choice of favorite dish as much as he thought.

Just had a thought.
So all animals behave differently with different creatures and whether they view it as threat or hunter or food or curiosity etc.
Which makes me wonder what sea creatures that don't really bother humans would bother Azul (octomer) or the Leech twins. I feel like merfolk would all have different worries depending on their form and area and abilities.
Sperm whales don't bother people and mostly just vibe but that's cause sperm whales eat giant squid and we're also super tiny so they're mostly just curious though dangerous still. However Azul is a rather large octoform entity. Is a sperm whale an octomer or squidmer's nightmare beast?
Do they all have to worry about lampreys? Or free swimming parasites like how we have to worry about ticks and certain seasons in certain areas? I wonder...
Hmmm well, the twins like to eat octopus much like regular eels and I think I remember them hinting at wanting to nom Azul. I think if it's a mer with a mer their mostly ok but a mer with the actual animal that eats the species he's related to and its one also capable of eating them then it's something they would have to worry about.
Of course, some of that depends on if mers do participate in cannibalism, which I've seen as dependent on. Or if not, then just taking bites out of others. Floyd is a bitey guy, I remember reading that bit about him trying to take bites out of those puppet guys in that one event.
They probably do have to deal with lampreys and parasites like us with ticks, fleas, and lice.

What is your opinion on mermaids?
And I'm not just talking your usual pretty, dainty looking ones (tho those are awesome all in of themselves)
Like, what about mersharks? Meroctopus?
I have too much to say where do I even start? (Just so we’re clear I’m answering this as how I would handle them writing wise, think of it like a lore dump. This won’t be horny only because my nerdiness took over but please do feel free to ask for that specifically if you want!)
Hmm I think think, let’s just briefly touch on ‘pretty’ merfolk. While the modern reputation they have is beautiful and filled with intrigue let’s not forget that these creatures have cautionary tales for a reason. They were sirens, seductresses who lead sailors to their deaths for a meal. Now a days they seem to seek to fulfill a different kind of hunger, one more carnal in nature.
Octomer and squidmer are in some regions heavily debated on. It’s known they existed, but no one can get concrete evidence on them still existing. They’re highly intelligent and seclusive creatures and only antidotal stories of sightings are known.
It’s theorized that they simply avoid being on camera and human interaction as whole since shared history isn’t very pretty. Most human like to pretend it never happened or were simply never taught but our history with them puts blood on our hands as we used to hunt them for sport.
Though the areas where reports of their existence are frequent were known to ally themselves with these type of mer so it’s possible if they aren’t extinct that they choose to stay near them for safety.
Mersharks are surprisingly considering their reputations the friendliest of the merfolk. Like their actual shark counter parts they get a bad rep for being predator creatures. The truth is that they’re incredibly curious and incredibly powerful so they’re investigating of humans unfortunately can look and feel like an attack at times but most mean well. They genuinely just want to understand how humans work and move around with their funny little bottom arms and hands. Along with being the most friendly they’re the most likely to form genuine relationships with individual humans

I came to the decision that Nocturna is a giant squid mer:O
Old and pale, and sensitive to sunlight, that’s why he lived so deep. Her meeting with Jay happened when the boy was very, very small, barely enough of him to fill out her hand. The baby was hiding close to the depth, a children octos tended to do before they grew up enough to be safe in open waters. he wasn’t doing that good, though, thin and hungry, his only companion was an even tinier octopus he tried to keep alive and feed.
Nocturna observed the baby for a while, considering eating it, but he was so endearing i his attempts to keep the little octopus alive, when it could be made into a meal that would help him survive for longer. She didn’t have children herself, there was very few males of her species and none close enough to attend her in the mating season (her species didn’t do mating fights, they were more civilised in that respect) so, well, he was there and looked quite promising.
She adopted Jay and fed him up, allowed him to hide in her shadow until he was big enough to leave to explore, but they shared a very close bond. That’s one of the reasons why Jay was even more of a loner than usual octomer - he was raised by a squidmer and could never fond common language with his own species. He was returning periodically to the trench to visit his mom:)

Now, when the news of his misfortune reached Nocturna, she wasted no time - she left the trench and had Jason’s friends (freaked out like hell cause GOD! :O) lead her to the place she knew her baby was. On the way Roy filled her in on the situation and told her all about being Jays friend and his recent adventures with humans. Nocturna was doubtful that the humans were any good, but Robin was there (carried by Bizarro, because he was still hurt) to confirm that it was the humans that saved them both and he even showed her the stitches Tim put into him.
(Bizarro is a BIG whale shark with skin and fins marked by scars from harpoons and so on, left by cruel humans trying to hunt him, he was not that hot on the subject of humanity, but he was willing to believe there were some good ones out there:)
When they finally got to the Depth, Nocturna could smell the ancient waiting for her on the bottom. She signalled the young ones to stay behind, they shouldn’t get in the vicinity of the fight that was about to commence. And then she dived.
She found Ra’s mid-coitus, her boy hanging jump form his arm, pale and worn out, and her anger was so great that her body flared with luminescence and she threw herself at the octomer responsible for hurting her son.
The fight was long and harsh, both of them were ginormous and strong, Ra’s was still in the throes of mating fever while Nocturna was mad with anger, and they were pretty evenly matched. Many wounds were given and taken, blood clouding the water. In the chaos of the fight, Nocturna managed to pull Jay out of Ra’s arm. She pushed him behind her with an order to swim away, but he was so weak he couldn’t - that’s when Kori appeared, able to descend all the way there - she grabbed Jay and pulled him away, higher, to where Bizarro could take over and carry him away.
They waited for Nocturna near the trench, scared for her and not knowing what to expect. Jason was barely responsive. Artemis hunted food and they fed him, and allowed the octomer to rest.
Some time later, a shadow washed over them and they all tensed, but it was only Nocturna returning. She was in rough shape, her wounds were seeping blood and chunks were missing from her boy and arms, but she was alive, though very weak.
Very gently she pulled Jay into her arms, close to her chest, and slipped back into the crag, hiding them both, giving them time to reconnect and recover. Robin followed. Jay’s friends breathed out. It was time to return home and give the family time. Every once in a while Roy and Artemis delivered some fresh caught fish.

Perceptor remained coiled where he sat, on his favorite outcropping of stone and coral halfway up the wall of the trench, glaring moodily at the direction of his home-
A betrothal.
What need did he have of a BETROTHAL of all things. He adjusted the carved abalone that served as a patch for a damaged eye- the result of a battle with a hefty squidmer that had crossed into the territory years ago. He huffed again, knowing he was being an absolute fry about this but annoyed all the same.
A low hum rumbled between trench walls and he gnashed needlesharp teeth, uncoiling his ribbonlike tail and sliding through the currents back to whence he came.
And he landed with a thud of a treetrunk body, arms crossed over his chest and in a grand old sulk about the situation as he was stared at in exasperation by those gathered to witness the confirmation of this... betrothal.
The tip of his tail lashed the water around it into bubbles.

My Virtual Titration game is now available! It’s going to be tested later this week by students in the general chemistry labs at my university, but its available free for anyone to play, so if you are interested in trying it out, I’d love to hear what you think!
The game is a virtual acid/base titration where you can choose to titrate strong or weak acid/base. You can customize a lot of factors in your titration as well, such as the pKa/pKb if you are titrating weak acid/base, the concentration and volume of your analyte, the concentration of titrant, the equipment used (ph Meter or indicator), and more. This should be a useful tool if you are studying acid/base chemistry, if you want to brush up on your titration skills, or if you just want to have some fun playing around with chemistry concepts! The visuals are super cute as well, especially Pang, the chemistry cat (designed by @squidmer and named after one of the professors at my university).

Hi! Yes I can share some fun facts about Aspen! I'll do a smaller version of what I did for Yev and Nurse Goethel with some headcanons for him!

Aspen is a tall, lanky young man who is often described as skinny and “built like a beanpole”. He is light skinned with light freckles on his face. He has light pink, mid-length wavy hair that has two slightly darker pink streaks on the sides. His hair is parted in the middle, with the two darker locks framing his face. He has light green eyes and a mole under the right side of his lip.
Headcanons/Trivia
Aspen does not have many friends outside of Tony and the Octavinelle trio. Any and all friendships he has were done against his will, this is a reoccuring issue for him.
Aspen is a squidmer, most closely related to the Colossal squid. In his merform, despite remaining rather skinny, reaches just under 18-ft long.
Aspen is musically inclined and can play most instruments after listening and watching someone play for a few minutes. He does best with singing and likes the school choir. He's also in the Pop Music Club, though he has reservations about Kalim.
Aspen and Tony are childhood friends and have been attached at the hip since they were 5.
It's been implied that Azul is Aspen's older brother in Chapters 3 and 4
Aspen and the Octotrio
Azul: Aspen and Azul have a very complicated relationship with one another. He craves approval from Azul, but is passive-aggressive about it. Azul on the other hand, has been more active in trying to rebuild the relationship, but has met with a rock wall with Aspen.
Jade: Aspen has had a crush on Jade since he was a child. Jade had been kind to the younger Aspen, and generally has a soft spot for him. Aspen craves Jade's kindness as has been pining for many years. Though Jade would grow annoyed as he got older from the undivided attention, he's always remained polite.
Floyd: Aspen can hypothetically get along with Floyd, and did originally as a child, though Floyd liked to tease him. As they got older, Aspen would compare Floyd to Jade, which made the former annoyed and go after Aspen to harass and prank him. Now grown, Aspen tends to avoid Floyd, while Floyd likes to push Aspen's buttons.
