I thought Sophie was my fave Studio Ghibli protag.
But Mahito was just so immediately down for murder that now I'm seriously contemplating if I need to rethink some things.

Outside of Elijah/Klaus (cause there was absolutely 0 reason both of them died), which character in all of TVDU do you think had the most unnecessary/dumb death?
Honestly Klaus and Elijah aren't even in my top. Yes, both of them dying was dumb, but there are so many other death's that were more unnecessary. At least Elijah and Klaus made it to the end of TO.
Some honorable mentions: Hayley, Tyler, Gia, Josh, Enzo, Jo, Lexi, Sophie, Eve, Jesse, Aaron, Aya, Jackson, all of the hybrids, Carol, Henry, Celeste (first time), Genevie (first time and kind of second time). I'm sure there are more.
But my most unnecessary/dumb death is Cami O'Connell.
Tumblr media
There was zero reason for her to die and it was because she wasn't meant to die. I firmly believe she was meant to be the school psychologist in Legacies. It would have made so much sense for her to be there for Hope after Hope lost so much of her family. It also would have allow a woman on the show to have a happy ending that wasn't centered around a man. Her happy ending would have been watching over Hope and helping all of the supernatural children, fulfilling her family's destiny.
Cami still had so much of a story left to tell. She was so young and full of promise. She lost her entire family due to the supernatural world and then was forced into it herself. If anyone in TO is a parallel to Elena, it is Cami. Her family legacy was so entrenched in the supernatural that it was only a matter of time before she herself was pulled into it.
Even her death made no sense. Lucien wanted to hurt Klaus for 'stealing' Aurora from him, but at that point, Lucien had the ability to kill Klaus. Sure, maybe he wanted him to suffer, so why not go after Hope? She was out in the bayou essentially unprotected (let's be honest, what could Mary have done?).
Even if we accept Lucien wanted to make it even by taking away Klaus' love, how did they not save her? Like two days later the entire Mikaelson gang is bitten and Freya just magically thinks of a way to freeze them and save them all? They couldn't have thought of that a little quicker? It's funny how they always manage to think of life saving magic when the plot/Mikaelsons require it, but there's no other options when it comes to sacrificing other characters.
Even if we accept that she died, they really didn't even make an effort to bring her back? Davina was able to be brought back from the dead after her soul was shredded. I know the other side was gone at that point, but let's not pretend the show didn't just bring back characters with very little rhyme or reason. The Mikaelsons didn't even attempt to find a way to bring her back.
And no one even say it was to help Klaus' character development. I hate when women are killed to further a man's development. It was clear in the writing that Klaus still needed Cami for his development. He was just at the brink of trying to be a better person, he was nowhere near done. We can clearly see this in the amount of scenes Hayley becomes ooc in order to be Cami for Klaus. Or Caroline coming in season 5, which made no sense, was clearly meant to be Cami.
Cami was an O'Connell and this meant something in New Orleans. People who claim her character was just a love interest were not watching. Her character was going to unite New Orleans. Not Hayley, not Hope, and definitely not the Mikaelsons. Every faction adored her. Marcel and Vincent loved her and would have done anything to keep her safe. The Mikaelsons each loved her outside of her relationship with Klaus. She would have always been a mother figure to Hope, no matter what her relationship was. Hayley loved her as well. We don't see her interact with the wolves too much but that's because they were largely forgotten in the writing. But every faction loved her and respected her. Her legacy was fixing the war in New Orleans. Which I love the writers just kind of dropped and everything magically go better when the Mikaelsons left, even though the war had been going on longer than the Mikaelsons were there.
The writers had not planned to kill her off but because of the toxicity of the fandom, they killed her off. This is just bad writing. They writers often cared more about ratings than the actual art of story telling and the show suffered because of it.
Thanks for the ask! What other deaths do you all think were unnecessary?

Note! Definition of a sexywoman:
According to the sexywomanpedia, a sexywoman is "a character who shows the 'lanky suitman villain' tropes, is popular with wlw, and/or is highly divisive." Some factors to consider are morality (or lack thereof), overall mysteriousness, and strength (physical or abilitywise.)
Propaganda:
Master Cadence:
"she’s a linguist. she’s a woman in stem. she’s tired of everyone’s bullshit. she’s fruity as hell. her house is cool as fuck (a howls moving castle style boat-thing made of metal that she built herself because she didn’t want to live in the elven cities???? come on). she’s a MASTER. what more could you want." @let-them-sing-of-others
"she’s an academic. shes smarter than u. she hates on the council and she’s RIGHT. she hates sophie actually you know what she has a hater complex but in a hot way. i love her yr honour." @necromycologist
"she spent YEARS researching on ogres and their culture. idk about you, but i would try keeping her in my good graces because she KNOWS ABOUT DEADLY POISON. WHY ARE PEOPLE NOT TALKING ABOUT THIS. I WOULD SHIT MYSELF IF I CAME ACROSS HER IN REAL LIFE EVEN IF IT WAS IN A GROCERY STORE ON A RANDOM TUESDAY AND SHE WAS BUYING OREOS. FOR ALL WE KNOW, SHE COULD HAVE LOADS OF THAT IN HER HOUSE/ON HER PERSON!!" @corruption-exe
"ok not to be a lesbian or horny on main (<- ace) but HOLY SHIT i want her to step on me. this lady has intensified my sexuality crisis" (anonymous)
Umber:
"Shes an evil hot powerful shade that got killed in the book she got introduced in what more could you want" @thefoxysnake
"Umber (Redacted) is one of the women in the series that isn’t JUST psychological manipulator! She also fought! She broke bones (if I remembered correctly) and messes with everyone’s minds without even revealing her true name! She has a boyfriend! A BOYFRIEND. TRIX. She went through something ‘the incident’ (mentioned in the latest book) and joined the Neverseen! She got Trix, her Pookie to be in the Neverseen as well 🥺. You can tell she was also a good lover how Trix was so sad over her death. KEEP IN MIND SHE DIED BEING CRUSHED, so for those who likes angst; there you go. She died in her mission. She was Tam’s mentor and an EXCELLENT fighter if I do say so myself. Who wouldn’t vote Umber? A girlboss with a sweet boyfriend and has murderous tendencies? 😔🎉 Vote for Umber PLEASE! I’M BEGGING YOU! PLSPLSPLSPLS 😭😭" @chronically-ill-psionipath
Tinker:
"she's trans! she's autistic! she's a mad scientist! she's everything you could possibly want in a woman!!!!!" @gay-otlc
"shes a mad genius she built a mad science castle she invented steampunk literally why would you not love her" @necromycologist
Esha Aria:
"shes sooo funny guys. she fucked with the system to get some dick and almost got away with it. she chose that dick over her daughter. she may be exiled but at least she has her man. morals and consequences mean nothing!!!" @camelspit
Lady Galvin:
"She's one of the greatest alchemists there ever was, and yet no one recognizes her for her talents. She's surrounded by people who will never understand or appreciate her, and because of that she tries to make their life hell. She has no ambitions, no future, no goal, and yet she doesn't break. She wears her cool ass capes and rules over detention with an iron fist, desperately searching for the control she lost when she realized her job wasn't up to her. She's an evil supergenius stuck in a children's school." @lizzie-dude

listening
i have not been keeping up with either the tuesdaypost spreadsheet or the tuesdaypost playlists so there's a strong possibility i have already talked about Joywave's It's A Trip! off the 2017 album Content. spotify
youtube
Tumblr media
driving ten hours in one day is ideal for listening to albums and i listened to almost every joywave album on my way home from the eclipse. american indie rock band from rochester ny, i have loved them since early college. i think they were made in a lab to get to stuck in my head bc they tend toward lower register synthier tracks that deceptively amble cheerfully along and talk about dealing with fear. songs for a male protagonist to splash water on his face, look at himself in the mirror haunted by what he's seeing, linger in his children's bedroom doorways, and then drive off into the night for the finale.
i think i listened to this song for an hour on loop yesterday bc the chorus so perfectly got stuck in my brain
When you've gotten what you want (Maybe I should start over) There's nothing left to want (Up and at 'em again) You don't know what you want (Yeah, I'm thinking it over) Just tell me what to Want
they have spent a lot of time figuring out how to have longevity as a band: "The record kind of attempts to figure that out but it doesn’t end in a definitive place. For me personally, it’s just to create things that matter as long as I possibly can, and to make things that are going to outlive me that people can hang onto for at least five to six years after I’m dead." they are deeply cranky about virality/content churn, especially in this interview. i appreciate this in an artist.
could not tell you how i first found them. i think i would have to go back to the proto-tuesdayposts of 2018.

Uprooted by Naomi Novik destroyed me. (image from here)
“Our Dragon doesn’t eat the girls he takes, no matter what stories they tell outside our valley. We hear them sometimes, from travelers passing through. They talk as though we were doing human sacrifice, and he were a real dragon. Of course that’s not true: he may be a wizard and immortal, but he’s still a man, and our fathers would band together and kill him if he wanted to eat one of us every ten years. He protects us against the Wood, and we’re grateful, but not that grateful.”
my best friend real-life influenced me into reading this book and i have since managed to convince four other people to read this book bc i won't shut up about it. the descriptions of the physicality of magic and how different kinds of magic and different families of spells Feel was only part of the coolest magical system ive ever read about. this is not a dark romance but it is a little brutal in a brothers grimm/this is how battles shake out sometime kind of way. i think a companion piece of media written from the Dragon's point of view would nicely parallel that post going around about how Howl's Moving Castle the movie is from Howl's point of view and Howl's Moving Castle the book is from Sophie's point of view. i would die for Agnieszka.

Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik (image from here)
Miryem is the daughter and granddaughter of moneylenders… but her father isn’t a very good one. Free to lend and reluctant to collect, he has loaned out most of his wife’s dowry and left the family on the edge of poverty–until Miryem steps in. Hardening her heart against her fellow villagers’ pleas, she sets out to collect what is owed–and finds herself more than up to the task. When her grandfather loans her a pouch of silver pennies, she brings it back full of gold. But having the reputation of being able to change silver to gold can be more trouble than it’s worth–especially when her fate becomes tangled with the cold creatures that haunt the wood, and whose king has learned of her reputation and wants to exploit it for reasons Miryem cannot understand.
i don't know if i've ever read a book with seven points of view before? i think it was well handled, but it required significantly more brainpower than screaming through three of kingfisher's light fantasy/romances in two days and it threw me a little. saying this book is about debts cheapens it a little, i think. it is concerned with debts but also safety, and it is very much about cost in a very fairytale way and in the horrible everyday calculus of survival way.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Swordheart, Paladin's Hope, and Paladin's Strength by T. Kingfisher. god these go down So smooth. kingfisher has a niche and i respect that. i am reading the Saint of Steel tetralogy out of order bc even four library systems can only do so much, and i don't think you particularly need to read them in order.
i'm a bit cranky that the terfs took feminist fantasy from me, bc when the protagonist got her period in Paladin's Strength a little alarm bell went off in my head and i had to put it down and google some stuff (the answer is no btw). there is a way to write female-focused lightly historical fantasy without being terfy and kingfisher does it, but it's so rare that i was genuinely expecting some sort of. weird agenda to be at play.
these were all fun, fast reads and i don't have much else to say about them! not that they are better or worse than novik's books but they will not live in my head quite as long. there are fewer tantalizing hints about systems of magic that make me want to graph things out u kno

kanopy has Animation April as their focus this month which is how i saw The King and the Mockingbird (1980, dir. Paul Grimault) which is a longer piece adapted from something he'd been working on since the 40s.
youtube
This animated fantasy tale follows the romance between a lovely shepherdess and a handsome chimney sweep. The land's imperious king falls for the beautiful woman and tries to thwart her relationship, but a kind mockingbird assists the lovers in evading the ruler. At the king's command, the chimney sweep and his bird friend are imprisoned, and they must escape in order to rescue the young man's true love.
Tumblr media
GOD the animation in this. there are so many references to early animation and silent film. there are so so so many gadgets and methods of conveyance in an absolutely architecturally dizzying castle. there is a ROYAL MECH that plays its own theme music. the backgrounds have a very Chuck Jones quality in that they are exactly as detailed as they need to be for the gag to work. the castle is lush and beautiful but not dizzyingly, overwhelmingly lush. there is a clear vision to every shot and a clear path your eye is meant to travel, which i appreciate very much. i think a lot of technically impressive animation (i am specifically thinking of the Nimh movies) muddies itself by trying to jam too much on the screen. just a fucking delight of a film. a delicious confection

painted a frame (it was a dead basic michaels frame i got at a yard sale and it was giving little boy's room) and framed a thing. this is a poster that came as a freebie with a 1997 album, and i actually bought this CD case without the CD inside bc i was so delighted with the poster. scuff sanded the frame with 120 grit, i went with a matte black acrylic bc i felt that disguised how the poster did not quite fit the frame a little better? and also bc it was what i had in the house.
i did not bother with a mat, i just used the lining paper with the stock photo and painted the back of that. do not do this with particularly valuable or beloved pieces. i do not think this is necessarily acid free and there is some danger that the paint may transfer to the back of the poster over time.

can you IMAGINE a Burn Notice/Leverage type show where Desmond decides to leave the Brotherhood after the solar event (having miraculously survived) and now he's on the run from both Abstergo and his dad (just like old times)
but of course he can't just run and only look out for himself, not with three mentors in his head telling him to fight from the shadows (so not completely like old times)
so it's a problem of the week show where every episode there's a new glowing golden person who has something Desmond needs who also *just so happens* to have a problem that needs solving
it's bloodier than Leverage or Burn Notice though because while Leverage never kills anyone and Burn Notice only kills the problem to death like 10% of the time
Desmond solves a surprising number of problems with stabbing
even ones that you would initially assume could not possibly be solved by stabbing
(when you're an Assassin, every problem starts to look stabbable)
And the Bleeding Effect makes Desmond a one-man con team.
Need someone to act like a rich dude? Use Haytham's bleed for a posh British old money ("I think he's a distant royal family member!") elitist or Altaïr's bleed for an arrogant oil tycoon ("He might have connections to the president, are you sure you want to get in his bad side???"). Planning to style a piece of art? Ezio's bleed makes him become an awesome art critic or a great tour guide.
Have to pretend to be smart? Take your pick. Connor has deep knowledge of the flora and fauna of the United States. Altaïr has a more general vast knowledge of the classics, especially of philosophy. Haytham most definitely has an insight into the historical and political situations of every major event the Templar had a hand before and during his time. Other than the arts, Ezio's noble background meant he would have a more religious background so theology is his jam and he can say prayers in Latin. (And the image of Desmond pretending to be a priest then charming his way into where he actually wants to go is so blasphemous I find it funny)
In terms of Leverage, Desmond is pretty much Nate, Sophie, Eliot and Parker all in one. What about Hardison? Well, what use are all these fancy expensive gadgets and security when Desmond has the Eagle Vision? Sure, he can't hack to make cameras go on a loop but he knows the exact blind spots of the cameras. He doesn't know what the red wire does but it glows gold so he just pulls it out and, voila, lasers go offline. When everything else fails, create a blackout and use the darkness to hide.
Letting Desmond loose in 21st century without any support other than his Bleed as a 'third party' against both Abstergo and the Assassins and doing shady things for other people means he's gonna be a more chill version of Agent 47. Lots of pretending to be other people and, as long as he finally covers his scar with concealer and lots of makeup, he'll just be a generic white dude. Just knock out someone with the uniform he needs and he's good to go.
It doesn't even have to be a stabbing. There are a lot of things that can become poison if applied correctly.
AND if we include Edward in his Bleeds (which we can since AC Valhalla did say that he had a dream of being Edward in one of the audio logs), Desmond would have a more in-depth sailing knowledge together with Connor's knowledge which he could probably use to figure out how to sail a boat or a yacht if he needs to and... Darts. Which includes the OP dart: Berserk darts.
But he's not a 'gun' for hire. No, no.
Everyone in the 'underworld' knows of him.
And if anyone asks about him... All they would hear would be...
"You don't find him. He finds you. And when he does, that means he wants something from you and, in exchange for what he wants, you can ask for anything. It will never be money. What he will always ask will be something important to you. Only if you're willing to part with it will he grant your wish."
"That's why we call him the Djinn."

Teaser - Chapter One - Chapter Two
characters: mafia boss! Yuta Nakamoto x innocent! florist! reader
summary: While running away, you seemed to be moving closer to the man you were avoiding. Are you even heading to the right direction?
chapter word count: 1.6 k words
chapter genre: angst, fluff (if you close your eyes)
chapter warning: super innocent main character, language, blood, gun, killing, flirty(?) Jaehyun (I swear this is a Yuta fic)
There are a lot of triggers that don't sit well with minors so please keep in mind that some scenes are disturbing and purely fictional. Inspired by Koi no Dangan.
a/n: I honestly haven't written a follow-up for this. My writing speed is so slow and I'm honestly so lost on what I should do. So if you have suggestions for what you want to happen in the next chapters, I promise that would help a lot. 😁 Thank you for your warm welcome. Sorry, I cannot reply to you all but I'm really happy to be back and see you all again. Thank you for letting me write for you again. 🥰

But moving away means huge money. And where would you go? Another country? That will cost a lot of money. Another city? But that won't guarantee that you will be safe from another mafia group.
A heavy sigh escaped your lips as you list your expenses for the month and the salary you’re receiving from this flower shop gig. Should you get another part-time job? A job that would pay you a hundred thousand a night perhaps? Is there even a job like that?
"What's with the long face?" Sophie, the owner of the flower shop, asked. "It's bad for the business." You apologized but she just stared at you worriedly. "What's wrong, Y/N?" She had always been the older sister you never had. It wasn’t the best impression when you first met her, but she had always been there for you and even took you in when she first built this flower shop. “Is it about your dad? I told you to just send him to the hospice, you can have the freedom by yourself.” But you cannot do that, he’s the only one in your family left. You cannot just abandon him like that.
You dropped the pen and then stared at her in question. “Do you know any job where I can get a hundred thousand per night?”
She laughed. A boisterous laugh that made you sigh. Of course, that would be stupid. There’s not a job like that. “You’re pretty and you’re young. You could sell yourself.” The older suggested which made you look at her. Sell yourself? How? Like in a market? “I’m pretty sure those old men would have a field day seeing you.”
What? You’re so lost. What is she talking about? “What? I don’t get it.”
Sophie gave you a frustrated sigh. “If you sell your body to those old men, they’ll definitely pay you a hundred thousand. Sometimes even more.”
“Really? How?”
“By sleeping with them and bearing them a child.”
Your eyebrows scrunched in question, “How do you bear a child?”
You can see how she looked at you as if you were stupid. And with how she judged you, you felt like you were. “You’re a hopeless virgin.” She claimed while shaking her head. “I’ll ask around.” You nodded, thanking her for that. “Y/N, please don’t let anyone corrupt your innocence.”
Your talk was cut off when the door chime rang and a customer entered. It was weird seeing a guy clad in black clothes and wearing sunglasses, asking for a flower suggestion. But you weren’t one to judge. A customer means business and you’re more than happy that someone is buying flowers at this time of day.
The guy kept on returning for three days in a row, sometimes twice a day, which you found rather odd. You were convinced that he was after your boss since Sophie would always entertain him and you would just arrange the flowers he would buy. On the fourth day, however, he came in the morning even if your boss isn’t around. He bought a bouquet of tulips, like on any typical day, without asking for Sophie. Maybe he really is a customer.
That afternoon though, instead of the man in black who usually comes in, a familiar dimpled guy appeared at the door of the flower shop that startled you. “You didn’t call me.” How did he find you here? Is this merely a coincidence?
“I lost your card.”
“Lost or threw?” He knows. He locked the door of the shop which made you revolt but he only stepped closer to you, pulling the sleeve of your shirt. “You didn’t clean your wound.” he whispered, “You could die because of this, Y/N.” It’s just a gunshot wound. How bad can it get?
If it wasn’t for Jaehyun, you wouldn’t notice how the part of your arm where the wound is was swelling. He explained it was natural and since you left the wound in the open, it is infected. You didn’t understand anything but felt bad that you dismissed his warning. But why is he so concerned about you? “I gave you my card so I can help you clean your wound or if anything happens, you can call me. I like brave girls but I hate stubborn girls the most.”
“You don’t need to concern yourself with me.”
He smiled, a dimple popping out from his cheek. Well, Jaehyun is rather handsome. You had to note that. But he’s related to a mafia and that’s a huge red flag already. “I don’t," You shrugged, he really shouldn't be.
"...but I’m grateful.” He claimed which surprised you. Grateful about what? “If it weren’t for you, the leader of the Nakamoto group would be dead. Of course, you don’t realize how big that is. But because of you, Y/N, the group is alive.” You didn’t know if it was his serious tone or the weight of his statement that made you hush. Jaehyun stared straight at you, “And a young child wouldn’t be more traumatized.”
“So Miss Y/N Y/L/N, like it or not, you’re already involved in this mafia group.” The words you dread to hear. “Unless you pay off your debt.”
Maybe Sophie’s suggestion of selling yourself would be a good idea.
Jaehyun stood by the door. From the outside, you can see the customer you have been noticing for days approaching the shop. He’s pretty late today. “And be careful outside. There might be people after you.”
If there is one thing that Jaehyun was right about, it is the fact that you were stubborn. It was the reason why you still went to the mafia’s house even if your father told you not to get involved. Yet why are his words repeating in your mind? It wasn’t a big deal. You pushed a guy when you saw that he was in trouble. Anyone could easily do it. But why is it bugging you like this?
Another is his warning. You didn’t try to notice it before but you were so paranoid right now that you do feel that someone is following you. Why did you leave the shop this late? You should have just come to work early tomorrow to do the inventory and not today.
From the windows of the closed shop, you can spot a tall man in sunglasses walking in the same way as you are. The same eerie man who kept coming back to your shop for days. Is he following you? Why? Hastily, you made a sharp turn to a dark alleyway and started scrambling to get something from your bag, the pepper spray Sophie had given you for this situation.
You weren’t surprised when he appeared in front of you. But your eyes widened in surprise when you heard a gunshot followed by the man falling on the ground, blood quickly pooling on your feet. You looked up to see a familiar pair of dark, predatory orbs staring at the body in front of you while putting down the gun he obviously used.
Why is the mafia boss here? And why did he kill this person in front of you? “Take him.” You saw how the man with brown hair, who you remembered as Mark, appeared in the alleyway and started dragging the bloody away. You only stared at the trail of blood, your heart thumping fast that you could feel your face heat up.
“You didn’t have to kill him, boss.” You knew that voice. Jaehyun. “How can we get information from him?” He walked to where you are, greeting you casually. “We’re seeing you too often, Y/N.”
“What’s happening? Why…?”
“His group is kidnapping girls and selling them as prostitutes to the black market.” It was Yuta who said those words, keeping his gun on the holster by his belt.
Jaehyun grinned. “You’re lucky you didn’t get kidnapped and sold.” Wow, you thought, you really attract the things you were thinking about. Aren’t you just considering selling yourself? You didn't know you could be near that plan because of that eerie man. “Didn’t I warn you to be careful?” he asked, wiping something from your cheeks. The handkerchief has a splotch of blood that startled you.
“You can keep on flirting all you want. I’ll leave first.” The leader just turned around and started walking away without looking back. You wanted to thank him for saving you but you cannot find your voice or your courage for that matter.
Jaehyun asked to drive you home which you didn’t turn down because of what happened earlier. You can still feel your hands shaking at the thought of the vivid scene. Instead of just the street heading to your home, he actually dropped you in front of your house. He handed you his card once again, “I’m not doing this to flirt with you. But if you needed anything, just call.” You nodded, putting the card in your pocket before going out of his car. You thanked him and he immediately left.
You breathed heavily before heading inside your house. You cannot show your father that you're shaken up like this. Calm down, Y/N. You're safe now. That wouldn't happen again. “Who’s that?” Your dad asked once you were inside the house, him staring outside the window. “Why are you coming home in a car?”
You didn’t want to lie to your dad but you didn’t want to tell him the truth either. “It was Sophie’s boyfriend. He just gave me a ride home since it’s late.” Maybe a little white lie wouldn’t hurt. You cannot let him know that you’re now involved with the mafia he owes money from.
Then that sentence replayed to you. Jaehyun was right once again. You are now involved with the mafia. They know who you are, where you work, and where you live.
The shaking of your hands came back, heart thumping real fast that you felt your face will burst from the heat. You will never be safe from now on, Y/N.

Reimaging An Offer from a Gentleman#3
Synopsis: Maria Beckett should know better. But there was nothing she could do. She craved love, she craved for warmth. And Richard Gunningworth didn’t know better.
But how Benedict Bridgerton knew better.
But how he was, a bit of a fool.
⚠️Trigger Warning: Mentions of sexual assault/ rape/ suicide.

Part one from here
“What is it, to woo a woman?”
Benedict Bridgerton spurred on his fifth glass of whiskey, contemplating if he should take the sixth.
“Not a lady, you mean?”
Alice eyed the man suspiciously, wiping the glass with a cloth. She was quite worried, seeing the second son of the Bridgerton family almost drown himself in whiskey. It was true that he had been dwelling in the stalls of the bar for years with a glass in hand, but he seemed to be improving.
“After a refreshing stay in Wilshire, I have gained a new perspective,” explaining to her happily a few days back.
“Well, yes, yes…a lady.” He added hastily.
“You must be at a loss, for a Bridgerton to be suffering in the process of a courtship!” Will laughed wholeheartedly, placing an arm over his shoulder.
“Might I ask who the lucky lady is? Which young debutant has captivated the eyes of a melancholic artist?”
Alice had expected Benedict to burst out in verse, declaring forever love and devotion to a young debutante somewhere in the ton, but his reaction was quite the opposite; instead, he sunk deeper into silence, dipping himself in another glass of wine.
“Isn’t she the one you talked about for years?” Alice asked a little hesitantly, “The women in silver you talked about-”
“What?” Benedict jerked from his intoxication. “No, no, no. Not her. Definitely not her.”
“Then who is she?”
Benedict decided to ignore the question altogether. He knew that he was being selfish, but anger and frustration had been slowly bubbling up in him. As he watched the young John Stirling whisper something teasingly to Francesca as her face flushed crimson pink, as they promenaded in the park arms in arms, giggling away happily about who knows what, Benedict couldn’t help thinking why he couldn’t do the same with Sophie.
He wanted to fill her room with flowers and bouquets.
He wanted to take Sophie to ice cream parlors.
He wanted to ask her for the second Walz at the end of the ball.
All the jealousy, all the longing, all the desire were flaming stronger day by day, and the overwhelming craving was killing him, making him lose his mind. How much he longed to just take her down in the closet or even the hallway, how much he longed to bury himself inside her arms…
“……Why does she keep rejecting me?”
“…So you are being rejected by this mysterious lady of yours? Hence this drinking?”
“How do you know that she’s rejecting me?”
“……You said those words seconds ago, Mr.Bridgerton.”
Benedict softly touched his mouth, regretting that he had let it slip. He knew what others would think of him if they knew he was trying to seduce a maid to be his mistress. He was seen as a respectable gentleman, and he didn’t quite want to lose the reputation he had from his fellow men. Not like Phillip Cavender.
“Well, …I…”
“So she has been rejecting you.”
Alice stated in a matter-of-fact tone.
“Perhaps, you are not her preference,” Will teasingly added, giving a pat on his shoulder. “No need to pounder, Bridgerton. There will be someone who would appreciate your looks.”
“No, no. No.” He denied quickly, “I am definitely in her preference.”
“How can you be so sure of that, Mr. Bridgeton?” Alice arched her eyebrows.
“Well…”
She said I look like her Prince Charming.
“I just know.”
Alice sighed deeply. Men, she quietly thought. So sure of themselves, not doubting any bit that they could be the reason for rejection. She quietly felt sympathy for the poor girl in question; imagining Benedict Bridgerton trying to wear her down with his charms.
“Have you been sending gifts to this lady of yours?” Will asked nonchalantly. “Perhaps she does not like what you have offered to her…”
Gifts…Gifts!
It suddenly dawned on him that Benedict had never given Sophie Beckett anything, maybe except for an ill-cooked breakfast.
One doesn’t have to be a mistress to be receiving gifts, don’t they?
“Mondrich, you are a great man!”
Already planning out a perfect scheme in his head, Benedict hurriedly slipped down from his chair, quickly grabbed his jacket, and ran to the door. He’ll tip the florist double the amount, he knew how to sneak into Genevieve’s shop at night….
“He’s going to do something awful.”
Alice murmured under her breath as Benedict disappeared from their sight. She wrote down his bills on the piece of paper sighing at the amount. He will have to pay, soon.
“……Why didn’t you stop him then?”
“Because,” Alice replied as she took a glass of whiskey from his hands, drinking it in a swig.“Men can’t realize their mistakes until they truly experience how bad one screwed it up.”
----------------------------------------------
Sophie was exhausted to the bone.
She had been running up and down the house all day long, preparing for the Bridgerton Ball that was coming up next Wednesday. After helping Miss Eloise with the dress in the morning, she also assisted Lady Violet with the penning of the invitation and also helped Hyacinth with her Latin and French. She also secretly mended the tear Miss Eloise had made on her secret escapades, secretly washed the cigarette stain on Eloise’s nightdress, and secretly delivered the letters Eloise had firmly told her; that it is a secret.
She truly adored and admired the Bridgertons.
But she was truly exhausted. Her feet were sore from bustling around London with Eloise’s secret errands in ill-fitting shoes that she had been wearing for years, her hands were cramped from all the writing and the mending she did for the day, and her fingertips were filled with cuts for every time Benedict Bridgeton came into the room.
Sophie wished she could be more calm in front of his presence. Sophie wished Benedict would not look at her so longingly. With his ardent, morning-dew eyes. His warm, sweet, eyes.
Sophie shook her head fervently, trying to erase the fantasy that dwelled in her mind. It was almost midnight, and what she needed was a good night’s rest, not the passionate gaze or the warm arms of one Benedict Bridgerton. Sophie staggered herself up the stairs, wanting to lie on the bed and curl up in her sheets. But before that, she had to mend a hole in her stockings, iron out her apron, wash herself up, and change into her nightgown…
Benedict Bridgerton was the last person she wanted to see in her room that night. He was sitting on the corner of her bed, his face lighting up as he saw her open the door. With the crooked, teasing smile on his face, normally his expression alone would bring her to her knees, but that night Sophie was just goddamn tired. Just so, so, so tired.
“Why are you here, Mr. Bridgerton?”
“You look tired, Sophie.”
“Mr. Bridgerton, why are you here?”
“Can’t I be here?”
“You can not be here,”
“So hostile.” Benedict tutted, pouting his lips ever so slightly. “Aren’t you pleased to see me?”
“No, Mr. Bridgerton.”
“Come on, Sophie, I know…”
“Do you not hear me, Benedict?” Benedict finally noticed how cold and stern her voice was. “I am saying that I do not want you here.”
“Sophie, I just wanted to…”
“Did you not think that some could have seen you?”
“No, I didn’t think-”
“No, you didn’t think,” For the first time in her life, Sophie snapped, letting her anger get the better of her.
“How would the other servants think of me if they saw you in my room? They would think me as a self-serving whore-”
“Sophie, no-”
“And I would be fired from this position and…and…and…it would be very convenient for you, wouldn’t it?”
“Sophie, that’s not what I wanted to-”
Sophie glared at him with her moss-green eyes, and he noticed that Sophie’s eyes were filled with frustration. He staggered back, unable to say anything at all.
“Then what did you want to do?”
“I…I just…”
“Take me down on this bed, mark me as yours?”
It was exactly what he might have been planning to do.
“…And you call yourself a gentleman when you are no better than Phillip Cavenderー”
The next moment, Sophie was pinned up against the door, his hand grabbing her waist strenuously, his other arm slammed above her head, hovering against her by the door.
“You don’t mean that, Sophie”
His voice was dangerously soft, but there was a stroke of pain and fury, and Sophie realized she had gone too far with her anger. How could she ever compare him to Phillip Cavender? Benedict was far more sweet, far more caring, far more…
“I’m here because I love you,”
Sophie felt tears coming up to her eyes.
“…Please don’t say that.”
“I love you, Sophie.”
“You don’t know what you are saying.”
“I mean what I say, Sophie.” Benedict replied angrily, gritting his teeth, “I’m saying that I love you, and I want to take care of you…”
“If you truly loved me, Benedict,” Sophie was falling apart as she broke out in a sob, feeling the tears running down her cheeks. “Why would you ask me to be your mistress?”
But people have mistresses and by-blows all the time, Benedict stupidly found himself thinking despite his fury. What was wrong with having a mistress, if he loved her just the same, if he cared for her just the same?
“You’re hurting me, Benedict, don’t you know…”
“You have never thought how much you hurt ME, Sophie?” Benedict was almost losing his temper, he wanted to scream and roar if he could. Benedict tightened his grip around Sophie’s waist, knowing that his nails were biting into her skin, hurting her, scaring her. The awful side of him was wanting to hurt her, wanting her to feel the pain he had been suffering ever since Sophie had rejected his offer.
“I cannot breathe, Sophie,” Benedict’s words shook with anger. “I cannot breathe, I cannot live without you Sophie, knowing that you feel the same for me.”
He pressed his forehead against her, trying to regain his breath, trying to calm down the immense anger he felt towards her. He let go of his grip and instead placed them on the door, his nails biting the wooden plank.
“I love you, Sophie.”
“Benedict please don’t.”
“I love you.”
“Just…just, don’t, don’t Benedict”
Benedict slowly leaned in, softly nuzzling his nose against hers. Their lips were almost an inch apart, and if Sophie leaned in just an inch, he would have her sweet lips on his in a second.
“Tell me that you love me, Sophie.”
“I can’t.”
“Tell me,”
“Benedict,”
“….That you love me.”
Sophie’s lips were about to reach his, and he closed his eyes, waiting for the sweet sensation to reach his lips.
The next moment, he felt an immense pain slap across his cheeks, tasting the blood in his mouth. He staggered back, perplexed by the power she held.
“…….You’re drunk.”
There was a striking coldness in her eyes he had never seen before. Her hard, cold gaze was enough to sober him up in a second, but it wasn’t enough to deny her words.
“Sophie, Sophie, Sophie.”
Benedict instinctively reached out his arms, wanting to soften her, but Sophie stepped back, clutching to her shoulders as if she were protecting herself from him.
“No, no, don’t you dare touch me, Benedict.”
Benedict finally noticed that he was the stupidest man in the world. Benedict stood foolishly by the door, not knowing what to do or say, as he watched Sophie take another step back, shrinking into the corner of the room.
“I will tolerate, you dwelling on hallways,” Sophie said quietly. “I will endure you stalking me, sneaking and jumping up on me from hidden corridors.”
Benedict was beginning to notice how childish he had been acting as she spoke.
“But I can’t have you in this room, Benedict. This is out of the line.”
“…I apologize, Ms. Beckett.”
His voice was barely above a whisper.
“I’ll …I’m going to leave these here.”
Without even a glance, Benedict left Sophie’s room, quietly shutting the door behind him.
Sophie collapsed to the floor, hardly processing what happened over the last few moments. It was too much, too overwhelming to think with her drained body, but his desperate voice echoed through her mind.
“I love you, Sophie. Tell me that you love me too.”
Sophie staggered to her bed, the very place Benedict Bridgerton had been waiting on a few minutes earlier. He had left her something on the bed, and Sophie finally realized that there was a bouquet and a beautiful small box placed softly on her sheets. It was Lilly of the valleys. Her favorite.
Of course, he would have remembered.
During their stay at My Cottage, Benedict had insisted on her accompanying on his walks. “What if I collapse on my way? I have just recovered from sickness, Ms. Beckett,” Benedict had asked her teasingly. “I would need someone to run to Mr. Crabtree.”
Long walks they took on the country streets of Wiltshire, talking about their favorite authors, plays, and paintings. Benedict would ramble about his siblings and she would laugh, and Sophie remembered how much she loved the countryside; enjoying the wildflowers that bloomed in the side, enjoying the peaceful breeze that surrounded her. As she glanced at his warm smile, she remembered how much she was in love with him.
“You like Lilly of the Valleys?”
Benedict asked as Sophie softly took the blossoms in her hands.
“Yes,” she answered. “We had them around the garden when I was a child. It was my mother’s favorite…”
“Quite suits you,” Benedict had softly said.
“Why so?”
“Do you know what they symbolize, Ms. Beckett?
“I’m afraid I do not know.”
“Return to love, Ms.Beckett,” Benedict whispered, softly kissing her fingertips as he reached for her hand.
With quivering hands, she opened the white box, covered with oriental embroideries. Inside was a beautiful pair of shoes, laced in silk ribbons and white velvet .
Why wouldn’t he know servants can’t afford such things?
Such a foolish, foolish man,
Still feeling the warmth of Benedict Bridgerton against the sheets, Sophie sobbed silently, clutching to the warmth he had left on her bed.
----------------------------------------------------------
“Mrs. Gibbons?”
Annabel sighed as she saw a crack open at the door, seeing a petite figure in the shadows.
“Go back to your nursery, Sophie.”
“But I can’t sleep, Mrs. Gibbons.”
“Go back to your room, Sophie.” Annabel patiently replied, glancing at the clock as it struck midnight. She knew she needed at least four more hours of sleep, before starting another day. “Go back to bed, and close your eyes, and if you count to three hundred…”
“But it’s so cold and dark,”
Annabel rolled her eyes, cursing under her breath. God in heavens where is the governess? It should be her, or at least her father that should be tucking her to bed, not the bloody housekeeper as herself…
But when she looked at her soft almond eyes that loomed too large for her face, she felt a stroke of pain and regret.
“All right, Sophie, come here my dear girl.”
As Annabel pulled back the covers, Sophie climbed desperately onto the bed, clinging to her arms as if she were saving herself from drowning. Annabel noticed how cold her hands and feet were, and her cheeks stained with tears. Poor, poor girl, she thought to herself.
“I can’t stop shivering, Mrs.Gibbsons,”
“You’re all right now, my girl.”
As she put her arms around the poor girl, softly cuddling her against her back, she noticed that she should have done this years ago when she heard her young, petite roommate sobbing under the sheets every night. At that time, she would ignore her desperate sobs, covering her years with her pillow, trying to get some sleep. She wondered how the story would have changed if she had stopped and listened to her deepest vulnerabilities.
“Why can’t you reject him, Maria?”
“Annabel, he loves me. And he is so lonely, ”
“Sophie, are you asleep?”
“……..No.”
“I want you to listen to me very carefully, all right?”
“Yes, Mrs. Gibbsons.”
“You can come here every night, Sophie. If you feel sad or have a bad dream, or you can’t sleep, you’ll come to my side. I’m going to hold you tight, and we’re all going to have a nice peaceful doze. Do you understand that, Sophie?”
“Yes, Mrs. Gibbons.”
“But I don’t want you crawling into anyone else sheets except me. Nor do I want anyone else sneaking into your sheets.”
“Why would I have someone in my sheets, Mrs. Gibbons?”
“I’ll explain to you when you’re older.”
“How old Mrs. Gibbons?”
“Old Enough, Sophie.”
“Old enough for what, Mrs.Gibbons?”
She was quite at a loss for words. Instead, Annabel tightened her arms around him, hoping to warm up the poor child.
“You are going to be a strong smart beautiful lady, Sophie.” Softly stroking her golden locks, she felt a tear dropping down her cheeks. “Your mother would have wanted you to be strong, strong enough to keep yourself warm at night…”

Hey, PSA-Spoilers!
So, Netflix is releasing a new movie in four days (October 20, 2022). It is called ‘The School for Good and Evil’, and is based on a book series by Soman Chainani. It seems to be only covering the first book, though I imagine that there will be some kind of follow-up since literally everything this man has ever written is a New York Times bestseller. It’s a similar concept to Ever After High and Descendants, very well written, and I highly recommend that you watch it once it comes out.
the thing is
The thing is, there are two female leads. They are childhood best friends even though one of them is beloved by their village and the other hated, even though they are sorted into separate schools and taught to be enemies, even though there are so many people telling them to hate each other.
The thing is, at the end of the first book, one of the girls kisses the other one on the mouth. It is a kiss of True Love, something that already failed with her male love interest. It sends them home.
The thing is, this book, being that it is written by a queer author, has queer themes.
The thing is-and this is the spoilers-the girls are twins.
This is a plot twist from later on in the series. It’s something that’s wrapped up in a very complicated plot in the book it’s in. It is very unlikely that they could or would reveal this early. I feel like Netflix is likely to continue the movie series, and even if it isn’t, I feel like it would be fairly easy to get the books and read them yourselves for a….significant amount of people.
This book was written in 2013. By a gay man. I would like to participate in this fandom without the absolute shitshow that I know this will incite. Especially since the author is of Indian decent. Especially since one of the girls has been cast as black. Especially since this is so soon after the mess that was First Kill.
This was not queerbaiting, this was a gay author making a choice for his story. And maybe you could argue that he was forced, by his publishers, by societal expectations, but regardless; this man has been out-socially, if not publicly-since 2001. This was not an act of malice on his part, this was not a trick he played on you to deprive you of lesbian representation. Please, please be normal about this and leave him the fuck alone.
EDIT:
Okay, so some people are reading this as ‘don’t criticize this man about anything ever’, so I’ve decided to clarify: this is me, as someone who read the first book at about the time it came out, telling people to try to not be racist about this, letting them know that the author is queer-which in my mind at least reframes a few things-and trying to let people know that Sophie and Agatha are twins so they hopefully don’t get too caught up in the ship and then get disappointed/upset. I’m also trying to give this man the benefit of the doubt, but I’m definitely not trying to say that he’s never done anything bad ever, or that you can’t criticize him or his work. Just, please be normal about it.

Hey, Leverage peeps. Y’know how Sophie is introduced playing Lady Macbeth in Shakespeare’s Macbeth? I (re)read the play recently for a class (yes, I'm a literature nerd who voluntarily takes classes involving Shakespeare, sue me), and it got me thinking.
Because, guys… there's definitely meaning behind that choice. Lady Macbeth's character is an ambitious and manipulative woman who pulls her husband's strings to gain power, only to be consumed be guilt. Sound familiar? Yeah. There’s a lot of parallels.
I'm guessing many of you haven't read the play, so I'll explain the bare bones of what you need to know for the meta. Macbeth is a play about a general/nobleman named, of course, Macbeth. At the beginning, he encounters three witches—they're the origin of the "double, double toil and trouble / fire burn and cauldron bubble" phrase—who prophesize that Macbeth will become king. Macbeth describes his encounter to his wife, Lady Macbeth, who coerces him into murdering the current King Duncan. They work together to kill Duncan, and Macbeth ascends to the throne. He has numerous other people killed to keep his throne safe.
(Trigger warning for suicide mention! Skip to the next paragraph if you don't want to read.) Both he and Lady Macbeth are consumed by guilt as the play goes on, though, and she goes more or less insane and eventually commits suicide. (Trigger warning over.)
If you've ever heard of "out, out, damned spot," that's Lady Macbeth agonizing over the metaphorical blood she can't get off her hands.
So, how does this work with Sophie? Here's the thing. Lady Macbeth is known as one of the characters, if not the character, that coined the "dangerously ambitious woman" trope. She's determined to secure Macbeth's position on the throne, mostly for the power it'll gain her as Queen, and she pulls his strings over and over to get him to murder his way there.
Sophie is, of course, a grifter. Her entire skillset is designed to manipulate people—oftentimes rich and powerful men—to get what she wants. She isn't necessarily ambitious so much as obsessed with stealing artwork and other valuables, but she enjoys the downfall of most of her marks. She luxuriates in the power of making people do what she wants them to.
And yet Lady Macbeth does eventually succumb to the guilt of everything she's done… just as Sophie comes to recognize and regret the pain she's wrought. Remember The King George Job?
"Nate: I know what you're thinking, but it's not the same thing.
Sophie: Oh, no. Of course it's not. I stole from one rich man to sell to another rich man.
Nate: No one got hurt.
Sophie: That I know of. How do I know that innocent children were never used to shift my merchandise?"
(transcript)
In the same scene, she also says this:
"Listen, I know I grifted from filthy-rich wankers who hardly ever missed the money, of being taken for a ride. But this, this whole Moreau business has got me thinking. Keller steals from the rich, too, and a little girl ends up in detainment for it."
She comes to recognize her past wrongdoings via the work she does with the crew, and at the same time begins to redeem herself for it. That prevents her from becoming consumed by guilt as Lady Macbeth does. The theme, however, remains consistent.
It's also fascinating that Sophie refers to Nate as a "white knight, black king" in the very same episode as her initial (awful) performance as Lady Macbeth. White is often associated with purity and innocence, thus implying a “pure knight.” Macbeth himself is a noble and well-respected "knight" (technically general and nobleman, but it follows the same concept) before Lady Macbeth coerces him into murdering King Duncan. This parallels neatly with Nate as a “pure knight,” or an “honest man” (as Macbeth was before the play began).
Then, of course, we have "black king." Black is a color frequently associated with sin, darkness, etc., and thus Macbeth could be seen as a "black king" himself: someone who has done great wrongs to reach his position of power. He’s turned into that “black king” by Lady Macbeth. Nate, meanwhile, is called the "black" chess king. He is metaphorically “corrupted”—arguably, by Sophie and the crew. (Of course, in Nate’s case, the “corruption” is a good thing and leads him to become a better person. But the parallel itself still stands.)
Chess is about strategy, manipulation, and cleverness. Sophie and Lady Macbeth are both very good at manipulating people into doing what they want them to for power's sake. Nate is often referred to as the master chess player, where "chess" is the metaphor for cons. Yet realistically, Sophie is the best at playing "chess" with people. Not to mention that the king is, in many ways, not a powerful piece. It can only move one square at a time, and if it's captured, its side loses. The queen is the most powerful piece on the chessboard. And here's Sophie, referring to Nate as a chess piece.
(There's something to be said here about how Sophie manipulates Nate both for his own good but also to her advantage, specifically in The First David Job and The Second David Job. But for the sake of keeping this meta at a reasonable length, I’ll leave it for now.)
"But Synapse!" I hear you cry. "Sophie's really bad at the Lady Macbeth speech in the first episode, but she's fantastic in the last one! If she became a better person, wouldn't it be the other way around?"
Fair point, friend, and it's something I've been trying to figure out myself. Here's my proposal:
I'm not an actor, but from what I understand, acting requires you to deeply empathize with your character. Conning isn't dissimilar, but in a way, Sophie knows that when she cons, it is not her. She's hiding everything she is for the sake of deception.
Regular acting, on the other hand, requires you to be exposed about yourself and who you are. You have to be willing to be vulnerable for your audience. And Sophie truly does not know how to be vulnerable, or indeed who she is at all. Of all the characters on Leverage, she's always been the most mysterious about her past and her true depths.
In The Nigerian Job, Sophie claims she's gone to a civilian life and dropped her grifting. She's questioning the very thing that she loves to do, uncertain of herself and where she's going with her life. Her ambition and drive have been, if not lost, undermined. We know that Sophie is a paradoxically compassionate and maternal person just as much as she is a master of the con. When she joins up with the crew, she near-immediately falls into a momfriend role to Parker, Hardison, and Eliot, and she’s an exceptional teacher.
Perhaps she struggles to find kinship in Lady Macbeth's motivation in that first episode. She can't act what she doesn't understand. Plus, she has no outlet for the side of her that desperately wants to do good, and maybe that’s showing through in her inability to embrace being bad.
But in The Long Goodbye Job, Sophie aces her performance when she's doing it for a con. Yet at that time she is arguably far less like Lady Macbeth than she is in the first episode. So what changes? What about the con makes it so much easier?
I'd say it's a few things. Firstly, Sophie's newfound stability. She knows who she is, and she knows that she is not Lady Macbeth. Her desire to teach and support others has a) been discovered and b) is being fulfilled. She's found that her love for manipulation is most satisfying when directed at people who are maliciously uncaring and contradictory to her own morals. Thus, the ways her personality overlaps with Lady Macbeth's can't be destabilized by Sophie's internal war over how much she really is like Lady Macbeth. She knows who she is, and she knows what parts of Lady Macbeth she can relate to and what parts she has to truly act out.
Moreover, she's acting for a con: she knows the character she's playing does not truly represent herself. Her mask is complete, rather than requiring pieces of herself to be exposed.
Compare Sophie's performance in The Nigerian Job to the part of Lady Macbeth's soliloquy she's attempting to recite (yes, I'll explain the bits of the soliloquy that I reference, don't worry):
"Sophie: Come, you spirits that tend on mortal thoughts, unsex me here, and fill me from the crown to the toe top-full of direst! Make thick my blood;
Sophie: Stop up the access and passage to remorse, that no… (she hesitates and restarts her line) That no compunctious visitings of nature"
(transcript)
Versus the original soliloquy:
"Come, you spirits That tend on mortal thoughts, unsex me here, And fill me, from the crown to the toe, top-full Of direst cruelty! make thick my blood, Stop up th’ access and passage to remorse, That no compunctious visitings of nature Shake my fell purpose, nor keep peace between Th’ effect and it! Come to my woman’s breasts, And take my milk for gall, your murd’ring ministers, Wherever in your sightless substances You wait on nature’s mischief!"
(Macbeth, Act I, Scene V, lines 45-55; I’ve bolded the lines Sophie recites)
Note where Sophie trips up: she loses the word "cruelty" from "of direst cruelty" first, and then she hesitates on the lines "stop up the access and passage to remorse / that no compunctious visitings of nature / shake my fell purpose". If the latter line is gobbledygook to you, it basically means "stop me from feeling guilty so my guilt can't get in the way of my awful plans."
So where is Sophie hesitating? On the maliciousness of Lady Macbeth, and on her desire to feel no remorse. And what do we know about Sophie? That she is a) still inherently kind, and b) that she does feel remorse for the pain she's caused—or at least that she learns to feel it over the course of the show.
By the way, it's interesting that Lady Macbeth's bit about "take my milk for gall" is excluded too, because it's sort of like her saying "turn any motherly feelings/kindness I feel into cruelty." Compare that against Sophie's maternal attitude. It's probably not massively significant, given that there wasn’t a need for more than a couple lines for the writing of the show, but I find it interesting.
Now, compare this to Sophie's performance in The Long Goodbye Job:
"Sophie (wonderfully): Come, you spirits that tend on mortal thoughts, fill me from the crown to the toe, top-full of direst cruelty. Make thick my blood. Stop up the access and passage to remorse."
(transcript)
She's completely on-point. I'd say this is both because she's doing it for a con and doesn't feel internal conflict over it, but also because the marks deserve no mercy. The Black Book is full of people who have done awful things in the name of greed. Why should she feel guilt over dethroning them?
TL;DR: Sophie plays a character who simultaneously parallels and contradicts her. Lady Macbeth is manipulative and ambitious, much like Sophie, but also cruel and malicious, which is not very Sophie-like. Yet Lady Macbeth does eventually go crazy from guilt and remorse—and Sophie also has to learn how to deal with her guilt.
This is why Sophie struggles so much in her first performance: she’s questioning her identity in relationship to her similarities with Lady Macbeth. At the end, however, she’s become confident in who she is. She’s also learned to use her skills to destroy those who take advantage of their power to hurt others, rather than good men like King Duncan.
In fact, she’s dethroning people who are greedy for power… people who are not so dissimilar to Macbeth and Lady Macbeth themselves. Sophie has become their antithesis.
Damn, but this show is good.

Today on another episode of... oh you know the drill, I'm sleep deprived, I write aus at 3am, fall asleep without energy enough to keep writing, only to do it all over again next weekend. So for this week's episode:
Benophie meet the Robinsons au
So this kid Charlie suddenly lands in 12 year old orphaned Sophie's backyard, right around the time her father married Araminta, and for some reason Charlie claims that she is the only person who can help him fix the time machine that brought him there in the first place else his parents are going to kill him. And some evil villain is out to get him. So of course science kiddo Sophie agrees to help.
Except that while she tries fixing it, the time machine malfunctions again and sends 12 year old Sophie and 11 yo Charlie into the future.
The thing is that Charlie Bridgerton's entire family is currently all in his grandmother's estate for their annual game of pall mall.
And his family is... a lot to take in
Sophie's new friend has 7 eccentric aunts and uncles, plus their spouses, around 20 cousins ( Sophie really keeps loosing count of how many cousins Charlie has), then there's the unexpected visits from the sisters of his uncle's wives, with their respective husbands. Sophie counted one two, five Grandmothers having tea in the solar. And of course, Charlie's father, the artist Benedict Bridgerton, (who has got to be the most handsome man little Sophie has ever seen and Charlie's three younger siblings. )
They all think Sophie is some kind of school mate that Charlie has brought home and treat her so well that cute orphan Sophie starts wishing she could have a family like the Bridgertons, no matter how much Charlie says that's a bad idea because his mom definitely wouldn't like it, but once the Bridgertons find out that Charlie's friend is an orphan, of course they want to take her in.
Until Charlie's mom comes back home ready to scold her son for damaging her time machine and... little Sophie Beckett finds herself face to face with genius British scientist Sophie Bridgerton. Cue the chaos from the family realizing that Charlie brought his little mom to the future.
In the end when the evil corporation is defeated and the future time continuum is saved Sophie goes back to the past, ready to endure under Araminta until she can get an early emancipation and a scholarship to put all her effort into science and create a time Machine... and then she bumps into some slacker teenager painting the walls with graffiti and calling it art. Young Benedict is far from the wonderful man Sophie met in the future, but... she wants to stick to him and figure out how they ended up married in the future, worse, as her life keeps progressing and her friendship/ on and off art trade offs, with Ben keeps getting stronger trough the years, how can she hide the knowledge of who exactly is her in-laws future spouse.
Take for example Penelope from the journalism club, when Colin Bridgerton said he'd never date her, Sophie wanted to punch him and tell him he'd regret those words soon enough. She literally saw his adult version missing his wife just because Penelope went outside for air. And let's not mention Benedict's pompous older brother who always thinks he knows best, making plans to date Kate's sister right Infront of Sophie and Benedict. At that point Sophie was just opening a betting pool with grandma Danbury and calling it a day. Simon showing up one day and pretending to date Daphne was honestly the least weird part of Sophie's college years. When they got married, she was the least surprised, she knew!!
Francesca getting married to Michael's cousin? Since when? Sophie was convinced Michael was Fran's husband in the future, she didn't know about any John...wait ..wait oh no
And let's not get started with super feminist ' I don't need a man I'll never get married afraid of children ' Eloise, little Sophie was almost adopted into the Bridgerton family because adult Eloise was an avid children's rights advocate with a husband who believed in adopting orphans left and right. To find out that Eloise, the star step mom who was all about healing Sophie's trauma, used to be some surly angry highschool rebel, really had Sophie wondering if Eloise had a nicer secret twin.
And all the while in which Sophie is going with the flow keeping up with the Bridgertons and helping them out into becoming the happily weird and chaotic family she knows they can be. She ends up not noticing that ex graffiti artist, turned gallery owner Benedict is really into her. Mostly because Sophie knows herself as his wife or rather his future wife. And he keeps asking her to be his friend with benefits so she automatically thinks he's joking and doesn't pay him attention whenever he DMs her a horny come hither.
Benedict's family on the other hand who already love Sophie, keep telling him that a genius inventor like Sophie will never take him seriously unless he's ready to give her something solid to rely on. Instead of being a shameless tease, he should be a man and ask her out for real. But Benedict hesitates because Sophie already looks like she's been inlove with someone since forever. What he doesn't know is that he's actually jealous of himself, or rather, jealous of the man he'll be in the future, who Sophie met when she was 12.
What a complicated mess.

Silvaze Howls Moving Castle AU.
There's two different options here: Silver as Howl and Blaze as Sophie, or Blaze as Howl and Silver as Sophie. They both work like... Surprisingly well?? I'll explain a bit of my like. Thought process.
Silver Howl makes sense because that's just his whimsy. His charm. Especially when you start looking at different parts of both the book and the movie. In the book- He belongs to an entirely different world but stays within the magical one anyways, just so he can express himself fully. He spends the book trying to avoid falling in love with Sophie as to not activate his curse- He tries to do what is right, in order to protect himself and those around him, and he just can't because it's her. He also tries to save his best friend (? i haven't read it in a minute), and he grieves and loves hard and easy. Obviously. Silver Howl would NOT be the eater of hearts, and would not go seducing women just for the thrill of chase.
But in the movie, I don't remember him doing that? I remember him fighting a war and while being childish about it, he just had the best interest of everyone in in mind. And when you think of movie Howl, you think of him floating a girl over balconies and protecting from unwanted attention. Like how much more Silver can you get??
Sophie Blaze is where I lose it a little bit. Yes, Sophie is stubborn and headstrong and independent. In the books she is inherently magical, and she was isolated for a while. But thinking of her as this "drab mouse" doesn't quite fit Blaze imo. She is so much more than that- While Sophie is definitely a charming character throughout both mediums, and Sophie Blaze could work, there's a better fit.
Howl Blaze. It makes sense, right? Blaze being from a different world could be her escaping her duties- Which while is very unlike her, there could be a motive somewhere there. But thinking about the fear people have for book Howl, how he is awful, reminds me of Blaze's insecurities within her powers. Instead of the wizard who eats the hearts of young girls, Blaze would be the demon who destroys all. Or something. The very flame of her soul could easily be written as her contract with that universes Calcifer, and the gem on her forehead could somehow reflect that symbiotic relationship?
Howl was always very set on helping people in the books- I remember him doing mundane spells for practically nothing, and despite his... demeanor, he was kind. This didn't curry towards those of a higher status- He seemed completely disinterested in royalty. Him also refusing to get help for the war, or try to stop his "curse" from hurting those around him is just very Blaze.
Sophie Silver is. I like it so much okay. Sophie is just a girl who inherited the hat shop, she was so lonely she spoke to what she was making. Her kindness to even the simplest of things was her magic- She said a hat was beautiful, and therefore it was. And even when she got turned into an old lady, she took that as an opportunity. Sophie's endless optimism was so subtle when paired with her stubborn nature, but man, it fits Silver so nicely. Taming a demon by cooking food, trying to "kill" Howl with kindness by cleaning his house, trying to break her own curse without bothering him, being his friend and putting that barrier of "I cannot fall in love with him, we cannot be a thing". Like mmm. Silver.
I think Sophie picked up gardening at some point with the books or movie, but I don't remember? But I do remember her settling down into the peace of her life, content that everything was over- The witch of the waste was dead, she was young again, and she was in love. I feel like that really fits the "save the future" motivation type of Silver.
Anyways do what you will, five people who will read this. Make it an Iblis issue, make Marine Michael/Markl, make the Wales the Sol Empire or more the Sol Empire the magical world. I just thought that the idea was amusing and cute- I recently fell in love with Silvaze, and just was like yeah. them.

I read the script for Bambi because I'm going crazy trying to figure out why there's a line from it in Lacrimosa, so here's every connection I could find ranked strongest to weakest:
Killing/hunting (hunters threaten and kill the animals / "Bon" hunts and kills BSI/Cyberfun employees)
Inherited responsibility (Bambi is the Young Prince because his father is the Great Prince and he eventually becomes protector of the forest / Sophie could be considered the heir to BSI and will likely have a protector/rescuer role in the future)
Loss of a mother (Bambi's mother is killed / Sophie's mother is killed)
Hunger (Bambi and his mother have a hard time finding food during winter / Susan starves after being put inside Banny)
Two young siblings (Bambi and Faline's twins who are born at the end of the movie / Edd and Molly)
Rabbits (Thumper / Bon, Banny and Rocket)
Animals in general (self-explanatory)
this is a more of a stretch, but there could also be some parallels regarding the music:
one of the tracks from Bambi is titled "Little April Shower" and is a happy song about enjoying the sound of rain. "Into Each Life Some Rain Must Fall" - basically Felix's theme and canonically his favorite song - is about rain as a metaphor for sadness
of the four songs in Bambi that have lyrics, two of them - "Love is a Song" and "Looking for Romance (I Bring You a Song)" - are about love, and the TWF OST has a lot of love songs
regarding the actual content and context of the quoted line itself, it's spoken by Bambi's father (the Great Prince of the Forest) to an adult Bambi after hunters are found to be in the area. the full piece of dialogue is below, but only the last two sentences are used in Lacrimosa:
"It is Man. He is here again. There are many this time. We must go deep into the forest. Hurry, follow me!"
I'm so curious about how this line relates to "Bon" and Susan and their current situation. Susan wakes up in "Wonderland" Bon's Burgers and stumbles around looking for a way out while "Bon" watches from the darkness and ducks away when she spots him (possibly luring her to a specific place). what about this is similar to Bambi's father warning him about nearby danger? the two possible interpretations for this that I can see are:
"Bon" has paternalistic feelings toward Susan/his victims and considers himself a guiding figure
in that moment, in Wonderland, there is something or someone that "Bon" considers a threat and he wants to lead Susan away from it. my only guess would be Edd and Molly
I wonder if more audio from Bambi will be used in the future? or maybe we'll get something from Disney's Alice in Wonderland; we definitely have a perfect setting for it

the likelihood of characters dying in chain of thorns
this is just my personal opinions based off of my interpretations of the characters and the current content we have in the shadowhunters universe. this is an incredibly long post cause i never shut up so i'm putting everything under the cut!
james: 1/10
highly highly unlikely that he will perish cause someone has to carry on the herondale name
but honestly who knows at this point
like i would be genuinely shocked if he died
and incredibly confused cause someone has to go on to produce heirs that will lead to jace
cause the lost herondale is a whole different thing
cordelia: 1/10
also highly unlikely cause it’s almost certain that she’s the person who produces the herondale heirs
cause her and james are already married and i have confidence they’re going to get their shit together
lucie: 1/10
again pretty sure she’s the one who’s going to be producing blackthorn heirs and we know there are many more blackthorns to come
also i just don’t know what could kill lucie herondale
but yeah pretty sure she’s safe
matthew: 9/10
listen this man is not making it out of this series alive i’m almost sure of it
he has all the makings of a tragic hero
i feel like there isn’t enough time to give him the healing/redemption arc that he needs so i feel like he’s just going to sacrifice himself
and it’s going to be horrible and i’m going to cry for a minimum of 8-10 business days
but i just feel so strongly that this is where his arc is headed
thomas: 6/10
not sure about this one honestly
i’ve always been a little scared for thomas since the fake family tree said he died young (and yes i know it’s not correct but there has to be some reason why that’s listed as his death date even if it’s not when he actually died)
i hope cassie wouldn’t do that to sophie and gideon since she already killed barbara but who knows
there are other male lightwoods so he doesn’t need to live in order to carry on the family name
also i wouldn’t want him to be the one to carry on the family name cause him and alastair need to get together
but i’m worried about him cause i definitely think he’s in danger
i also will cry for a minimum of 8-10 business days if he dies
alastair: 5/10
again we’re not sure
honestly my confidence in his survival hinges entirely on the gender of the baby carstairs
cause if the baby is a boy then there’s a male carstairs to carry on the name
cause obviously there’s more since emma exists
but also if the baby is a boy then there is a much higher chance of alastair dying
cause like matthew i think he has the potential to be a tragic hero and sacrifice himself
i’m hoping his arc will not end like that cause i think there’s enough time in chain of thorns to wrap it up but i am still scared for the fate of my son
best case scenario him and thomas run away together at the end of chain of thorns
christopher: 2/10
i’m almost certain he’s okay cause i’m pretty sure he’s the one that carries on the lightwood name
but also there are two other male lightwoods in this book who have the potential to carry on the name
but i’m pretty sure he’s gonna be good
if he dies i think it would be mostly for shock value and cassie doesn’t do that often and normally only once or maybe twice in a series which i think she already did with barbara and elias
so yeah we’re pretty sure he’s safe
grace: 2/10
again according to the family tree she marries christopher and they make lightwood babies together
also i don’t think killing her off would make much narrative sense
cause she was kind of a pseudo antagonist and i think killing her off would be a cheap ending for her
again it would probably be for shock value but i just don’t really see it happening
anna: 8/10
yeah she’s in danger
very concerned that snippet that’s like “all that effort to convince you i wasn’t in love with you, and here i am, dying in your arms” is gonna be her at ariadne (kamala? i’m not sure what we’re calling her sorry)
i’m not sure how cassie could wrap up her character in a satisfying way in chain of thorns so i’m worried she’s just gonna kill her
again it could be a kind of tragic hero moment where like she’s been selfish for so long and then she sacrifices herself for the people she loves
but i hope she doesn’t die cause i love her
ariadne/kamala: 4/10
honestly i have no idea but i’m pretty sure she’s gonna be okay
cassie mentioned something about how she’s going to pick a new name for herself by the end of the book and that doesn’t make it sound like she’s gonna get killed off
but cassie is also the queen of misdirection
so who knows
but again i think if she killed her off it would just be for shock value and it would be kinda cheap after everything she’s gone through
jesse: 1/10
honestly i’m the most confident about him which is ironic considering he’s spent the last two books being dead
but he’s currently the only blackthorn that could carry on the name and there’s a lot of blackthorns later
but it would feel really cheap to spend so much time focusing on bringing him back to life only to kill him in the next book
so yeah i’m almost positive he’s gonna be fine
charles: 3/10
god i wish i could say with confidence that he’s gonna die but i really don’t think he is
i think he’s gonna find some woman who’s dumb enough to marry him and then he’s gonna be a miserable asshole for the rest of his life and help carry on the fairchild name
cause we know someone does
and i seriously doubt it’s going to be matthew
so unfortunately i think he’s probably going to stay alive
but there’s always a chance so who knows
feel free to comment/send me asks/message me about your thoughts on my predictions or any predictions of your own or just literally anything about this series cause i am desperate to talk about it

Silveny the Alicorn by @onlyslightlyevilgremlin
Lady Gisela by @flibbetygibbetsbro
Umber by @chronically-ill-psionipath
Propaganda:
Silveny the Alicorn:
"milf. projected horse sex into sophie’s head. probably killed a man. cockblocked sophie. her only flaw is liking keefe." @arson-anarchy-death
Lady Gisela: None
Want to submit propaganda? Do so here and it will be added in the 2nd round!

I love your 5000 Miles universe so much and have to ask: did Benedict keep his mouth shut about Kate being back so the lovebirds could have Saturday all to themselves or did he let it slip?
OMG, I'm so happy you liked it <3 I just wanted to do something light and fun for Anthony's bday. I am so glad that people are excited about it. I'm considering writing either the Sunday Brunch or the Pub night with Sophie next but it's all still under planning. Is there anything you’d like to see?
Oh, yes he did, for a few reasons.
1- Anthony and Kate deserve some time together after spending so long apart and he's aware just how chaotic and insane their families are and there was a huge chance they'd show up to Anthony's house and probably spend the entire day there. They deserved some peace and quiet to enjoy themselves.
2- Anthony would definitively sneak into his flat at night and kill him in his sleep if he did let it slip and if Anthony did not do it, Kate probably would. If they did not plan his murder together. They were a surprisingly cohesive team for a couple who could not even be allowed to play Uno together. He loves his life too much, and he does not want to risk it. He’s gonna hang out with Sophie on Friday!
3- Benedict did enjoy watching the world burn and he had first-row tickets to the shit show that would be Anthony showing up with Kate on Sunday Brunch without a word. He might even innocently let out a comment about how Edwina must have known, because Kate would have told her she was home, right? A man has the right to entertain himself if the opportunity arises. And the opportunity certainly did not disappoint.
As follows, Benedict's representation of Benedict watching chaos unfold on Sunday Brunch:

In the older Penelope AU, I think Penelope would take Sophie under her wing. She’s glad Benedict found his true love but pities Sophie because she knows Benedict. This becomes apparent when Benedict and Sophie get into their first argument and Penelope takes Sophie’s side. You know she would tell Sophie all the blackmail she needs. I also think she’d be able to help Violet with Posey since she’s been in her shoes as a wallflower. All in all, Kate would be Sophie’s best friend and Penelope would be like the big sister. Kate and Simon are just happy to have more people in the in laws in the club and know Penelope has all the tea on the siblings since she basically grew up with them.
@eriskind
Imagine being Lady Whistedown using all your resources and wit to find the love of your best friend's life so he'll stop fucking moping only for this woman to look at you and say "I won't interrupt your love. I'm not a homewrecker or mistress in the making" and it takes everything for you not to either A) gag B) Laugh or C) do both
THESE!!! These two are what I was trying to figure out.
I have a scene idea.
Benedict had proposed, had called Sophie his fiance, and Sophie could only stare at the red head behind him talking with Violet and Posy.
"Miss Featherington," Sophie called out. "May I please speak with you."
Penelope came closer while shooing Benedict away. As he passed her by she whispered something in his ear. Benedict nodded and walked over to his family.
God Sophie could never get between these two. It was obvious to anyone and everyone they loved one another. Sure, Benedict may say he loves her now, but he'll get over her soon as she's gone and be back in the arms of his true love. Plus, she was always kind to Sophie, almost like an older sister. Neither of them deserved to be played with by Benedict. Sophie did not deserve to be a mistress, and Penelope did not deserve to get her heart broken.
"Sophie is everything okay?" Penelope asked. "Did Benedict ask you to be his mistress again? I told that iditot-"
"No, no!" Sophie said. "I just wanted to let you know I'm leaving after this; you don't have to worry about me getting between you and Mr. Bridgerton again."
Sophie doesn't what she expects to see but it's definitely not the confusion on Penelope's face. "Sophie what are you talking about?"
"Penelope it's no secret that you and Benedict love one another-"
"Well yes that is true-"
"-and you have waited too long for him to propose. I could never be the reason that you two don't get married so I-"
Sophie is cut off by the giggles Penelope tries to cover up.
"Sophie," Penelope cuts herself off with another fit of giggles. "Benedict and I don't love each other like that."
Now it was Sophie's turn to look confused. She didn't understand. What does she mean they don't love each other like that?
"Benedict is my best friend from childhood, if anything he's like a brother to me," Penelope explained. "Any romantic feelings that may had a chance to grow quickly died when I grew immune to seeing him naked after dragging him home from his wild nights out before Anthony could find him. Honestly I don't know how people keep thinking we're in love romantically." Penelope shook her head at the thought being purely insane to her.
"So please put the man out of his misery and tell him you love him. That man was lucky I didn't kill him when he dragged me all over London looking for you. His moping was just sad."
Sophie let out her own giggle.
"Besides," Penelope said as she began to lead Sophie back over to the others. "Colin is already the self-proclaimed homewrecker in mine and Ben's supposed relationship."
Sophie looked over to where Penelope was pointing to see Colin Bridgerton watching them. Thinking back over at how touchy she has seen Colin be with Penelope Sophie is not surprised.
