Was thinking about what my fave Conan openings are. They’re all so good but I think my top 3 would be: Ai wa Kurayami no Naka de (22), Butterfly Core (37) and Q&A (36) 💙

In need of fluff, but when am I not? For real though I’m really missing my fluffy roots, I’ve completely lost the narrative.
Addition… what if I… what if I really did try to write a song fic a day? (I know I know, I should at least get through the midnights album fic BUT I have so many other artists I ride for and there are so many other worthy songs that just completely make me melt) I already know which song I would name it after too… the question is, do we start with that song or end with it? Hm…
Update 2: I’m in wildly different but similar places for my WIPs… also kaishi is involved with both. I’m thinking thoughts… a jealous shinichi over my queen is the current theme that I keep losing track of with the collab fic, but i kinda want other contenders… So many options, with so many better choices. I’m also thinking about the difference with the notp too… for the record my notp and the canon ship are two different ships, I will always refer to them this way cause I don’t even like typing the ship names. No negativity in my life! Be gone!

Genuinely I think a core issue with Detco is that for any weakness Conan has, Gosho Aoyama gives him an out.
As hilarious as knocking Kogoro out, stealing his identity, and damaging his mental health is....I just think it'd be so much more interesting and fun if Shinichi truly had to work around being seen as a child. The episodes where he has to give Kogoro hints instead of stealing the show are some of my fav Kogoro moments. Or he could push culprits to confess instead

PROOF THAT SHINRAN IS ONE OF THE MOST BRILLIANTLY WRITTEN ROMANCES OF ALL TIME - PART 3
if you haven't already read the posts i've linked down below, please make sure to do so before you proceed, cause they're important for context. thank you so much in advance!
IMPORTANT DISCLAIMER
as i've already explained in my disclaimer, my ultimate goal with this masterlist is to prove how well written shinran is - it's to demonstrate that they're unquestionably each other's half and the heart of the dcmk universe.
people often minimize the importance that shinichi and ran have in each other's lives by labeling them as boring, predictable "childhood sweethearts" which couldn't be further from the truth.
so far we've established that
1) shinichi doesn't fall for ran gradually, which is what usually happens with dcmk childhood friends, he knows right away that ran's something special.
2) even though they share the same core values, their personalities are very different, which has a positive effect on them individually: ran gets shinichi to come out of his shell and contributes to his emotional growth, while shinichi grounds ran and helps her articulate her feelings.
now it's time to analyze the part i teased in part two already:
they share a soul
god, where do i even begin? this post is probably going to be ridiculously long but it's by far the most crucial part of my analysis, so please bear with me. cause as far as i'm concerned? this is the main reason why shinichi and ran belong together.
don't get me wrong, love at first sight is a beautiful concept and i deeply appreciate the fact that shinichi and ran complement each other, however, they aren't the only dcmk duo that brings out the best in each other.
what sets them apart from other dcmk dynamics in the most meaningful way is the undeniable fact that their hearts are one and the same. but what is that even supposed to mean? let's break it down, shall we?
their intuition
this segment of the break-down deserves its own post, because there are countless instances of shinichi and ran showcasing incredible instincts, but i'll try to keep it concise for now. both shin and ran arguably have a sixth sense. that's already fascinating on its own, but what i'm really trying to home in on is that their intuition offers them great insight into other people's souls. sometimes i get the impression they carry a compass that points at people and tells them who's trustworthy and who's not.
chapter 22
Tumblr media
chapter 892
Tumblr media Tumblr media
ran has so many reasons to doubt takeshi and shinichi has so many reasons to doubt amuro, but they instinctively know they can trust them. shinichi even feels safe enough to confront amuro, which is incredible, cause my boy takes a huge risk by directly questioning his allegiance.
idk about y'all but i think that's beautiful. it reminds me of an amazing quote from a famous philosopher:
Tumblr media
their souls are pure. which is why they're able to recognize that quality in other people and each other.
their optimism
despite all the darkness that shinichi and ran face every single day, they have a really optimistic outlook on life. ngl, their unwavering positivity makes me extremely emotional.
chapter 252
shinichi gets shot by criminals and he's slowly bleeding to death. the detective boys feel like it's their fault that shin got hurt, they blame themselves and feel hopeless. my boy is in pain, he's fighting for his life, he's probably even scared, it'd be more than understandable if he saw their point and regretted the unfortunate situation they found themselves in. but he doesn't:
Tumblr media
he chooses to look on the bright side. even in death.
which, fortunately, gets the detective boys out of their dark way of thinking. shin helps them understand that, yes, they're on a bumpy road, but at least it's leading somewhere.
chapter 780
shinichi gets a culprit to reveal he's from the kansai region by successfully provoking him with a fake accent, but shin doesn't just piss off the culprit, he also pisses off kazuha and heiji, so kazuha begins to wonder whether people from the kansai region are narrow-minded and ran's perspective is something i did NOT see coming:
Tumblr media
HOW IS IT POSSIBLE TO BE THIS ADORABLE AND WISE?!
just like shinichi ran's able to offer kazuha a surprisingly positive outlook on her concerns, which genuinely makes her feel better.
there are many instances of their unshakable optimism and the effect it has on others, it's really beautiful to examine.
i recommend y'all look into it on your own, cause in this part of my masterlist i merely have the space to touch on shared traits like their great intuition and firm optimism, but now it's time to get into the biggest and most important portion of this analysis!
their idealism
i hope y'all read the disclaimer i've linked at the beginning! if you haven't, i urge you to read it before you continue with this post!
shinrans shared idealism is something i've already mentioned in part two of my masterlist, but there's so much more to say about it:
i'd argue that it's the main thing that connects them. not to shade my own children, but they value justice and human life so much, for most people, including me, it sometimes borders on stupidity.
but that's the thing, shinichi kudo and ran mouri aren't most people.
cause most dcmk characters 1) don't initially share their virtues and 2) question their admittedly heroic but also terribly reckless actions, whereas shinichi and ran support and admire each other because of it. because they're the same.
i'm about to give a few examples of shinichi and ran being the most idealistic characters in the manga and for the purpose of full context, i have to showcase the contrast between shinran's morals and the values of other characters. i appreciate and care about every single character who's brought up in the next part of my essay, so don't take this post as an invitation for hostility towards them, that's not my goal, okay? okay. let's proceed.
a) sense of justice and heroism
chapter 239-240
shinichi impulsively investigates the black organization. haibara repeatedly reminds him that he's being reckless and putting himself in danger, she even mocks his strong sense of justice and initially refuses to join his investigation because she's smart and values self preservation. haibara ends up joining him after all, but keeps urging him to drop his investigation and leave with her.
Tumblr media
i don't blame her one bit for her approach to the situation... truth be told, her reaction makes a lot more sense to me than shinichi's 😂 but that's because i share her pragmatism.
at this point in the manga shinichi and haibara have zero support. neither the fbi, nor the cia is helping them. it's incredibly dangerous for them to go after the black organization completely alone and it's not just unsafe for them individually either, it's risky for everyone they care about. their exposure would endanger a lot of people, including agasa, ran, kogoro, the detective boys, etc...
and safety concerns aside, why would she care about justice in that situation anyway? how could she, a teen who's trapped in a child's body, possibly hold the black organization accountable without any help?
so yeah, i strongly believe that if you look at the situation logically, haibara's point of view makes a lot more sense than shinichi's and it's fair of her to choose safety over justice, especially when the latter seems so impossible achieve.
too bad that shinichi doesn't give a flying fuck about things like common sense or self preservation. he's completely driven by idealism, it's what defines him as a person, in more ways than one. the only person in the dcmk universe who accurately mirrors his righteousness is ran mouri and it expresses itself through countless parallels that completely contrast haibara's position in chapter 239-240
chapter 44
Tumblr media
shinichi pretty much lashes out at the murderer for personal reasons which i dive into here. on top of that, he's passionately opposed to the culprit's idea of using justice as a reason for murder and guess what? ran unsurprisingly feels the same way:
chapter 313
Tumblr media
the obvious observation here is that their speeches are remarkably alike, but what i find even more fascinating is the fact that the killers react so similarly. shinran's sense of justice is so powerful, it doesn't just guide their own actions, it even moves morally corrupt people and holds them accountable.
furthermore, the concept of personal safety is completely lost on both shinichi and ran lol.
they constantly risk their lives for other people, including haibara, who, as we already established, initially disregards heroism.
chapter 289
Tumblr media
chapter 434
Tumblr media
AHHHHH!!! THE PARALLELS ARE KILLING ME
anyway, i'm not trying to undermine the beauty and complexity of haibara's character, she's incredibly well written and i think it's important to emphasize that she's actually attempting to sacrifice herself in both of these chapters.
i actually really appreciate the fact that haibara is this complicated person with a rough background who slowly figures out her values with the help of her friends, imo it gives her layers.
i'm simply pointing out that upon her initial introduction her virtues instinctively differ from shinran's, it takes her some time to grow into the same kind of heroism that shinichi and ran display from the get-go. because they inspire her. but i'll go over that in a minute.
b) they value human life
one of shinichi's main attributes has always been his profound interest in human life. it's a quality that i never questioned until recently because i always figured it was due to his work as a detective.
but the more i think about it, the less it works as an explanation because we know a lot of detectives in the dcmk universe who don't share his interest in protecting people at all costs.
interestingly enough, there is a character who shares his passion but it's not someone who professionally deals with human life - it's just a compassionate, tenderhearted girl who instinctively wants to keep others safe no matter what.
chapter 1026
ran saves a murderer from suicide
Tumblr media
which reminds me of shinichi attempting to do the same in another chapter:
chapter 67
Tumblr media
he tries so hard... but unlike ran he ultimately fails.
and who's there to comfort him? who's the only person in the whole world who naturally understands his sorrow, who truly knows how valuable human life is and wants to protect it just as much as he does? ran. of course it's ran.
Tumblr media
and it will always be ran.
having said that, analyzing shinran's idealism is beyond fascinating to me because i rarely share their virtues or courage. my values are more aligned with the rest of the dcmk universe:
chapter 153
shinichi notices that a culprit is about to kill herself and gets in the way of her plans. heiji's response resonates with me a lot.
Tumblr media
CAUSE YEAH, what's the point of keeping someone alive against their will? isn't that infinitely crueler than just letting them die? maybe.
but shinichi and ran don't give a fuck lol. they don't stop the murderers suicide attempts because they're heartless though. it's the opposite, really.
as we already established, both shinichi and ran are optimists at heart, so they believe or least hope that people can always better themselves. i think that's the main reason why the interfere.
besides, shinichi and ran simply care too much about justice - they need culprits to be held accountable and they respect human life too much to allow suicide.
again, do i share their passionate interest in human life? LOL, hell no. i think very few people are capable of being that idealistic. most people, including me, value innocent life but shinichi and ran? they value life regardless of innocence and on top of that, they even value the lives of people who ARE ACTIVELY TRYING TO KILL THEM
chapter 773
a man is threatening to bomb the detective agency, he could kill ran, kogoro and sera within SECONDS and what does my girl ran do? yeah, she saves his life, LOL!
Tumblr media
she's already in immense danger and she's seconds away from being saved, but she goes out of her way and puts herself even more at risk, just to save a guy who's threatening her life. WHY?!
Tumblr media
because that's just who she is.
understandably, sera is baffled. she doesn't get it.
which makes sense, cause, again, there's only one character in the entire manga who truly understands ran and passionately agrees with her principles and that's shinichi kudo:
Tumblr media
their idealism never wavers. it's perplexing for characters like haibra, heiji, sera and even for me as a reader. it's also extremely inspiring though. which brings me to my next point!
c) they inspire others
chapter 239
remember how haibara initially refuses to join shinichi during his investigation? guess what changes her mind...
Tumblr media
even though haibara mocks shinichi's idealism and admittedly doesn't understand it in the beginning, it does get her thinking.
she grows up under terrible circumstances which force her to prioritize her safety over human life, but after watching shinichi for a while, she comes to the realization that she no longer has to live that way.
his unshakable idealism fascinates and encourages her, she's reminded that she has choices now and suddenly she finds herself wanting to do better.
but shinichi isn't the only person who helps her evolve in a pretty significant way:
chapter 313
ran's speech about justice and courage deeply moves haibara in the same way it affects the culprit.
Tumblr media
her speech doesn't just give haibra the courage to finally introduce herself to ran after months of avoiding her (for reasons i'll get into in part four of my masterlist) i'd argue it also contributes to her finally facing the black organization in chapter 434
while shinichi helps haibara understand that she has choices now and urges her not to run from her fate, ran motivates haibara to be courageous and face her fate. it's actually incredible how much they help haibara, just by being themselves.
chapter 398-400
check out the blog of my wonderful friend aracaeli who recently brought attention to an extremely underrated chapter which emphasizes that ran doesn't just affect characters like haibara, she even inspires her other half shinichi, which is a remarkable accomplishment, considering their morals are generally completely aligned.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
ran's idealism knows no bounds. how could it not move people? especially someone like haibara who's just starting to get familiar with the concept of friendship.
Tumblr media
in this chapter ran's idealism inspires countless people (shinichi, haibara, the detective boys, the murderer) it says so much about her character and it's such a touching reading experience.
chapter 153
remember how heiji understandably regrets saving the murderer from suicide after seeing her devastating reaction? shinichi knows exactly what to say:
Tumblr media
AGAIN, personally, i don't even blame heiji for his initial views. frankly, i agree with them! but it's really hard not to be affected by shinichi's powerful words. i can see how they could completely change the mindset of a passionate detective like heiji. and they do.
chapter 188
Tumblr media
to the point that heiji's willing to risk his life because of them...
chapter 774
even sera, who can be a bit morally corrupt at times, is impressed with ran's strong virtues:
Tumblr media
but that's to be expected, considering that shinichi and ran even had an impact on vermouth who's an established, ruthless serial killer.
i know, i already extensively talked about the new york case in part two, but it's such an important chapter for shinran that i feel the need to bring it up again, especially if it's going to continue the wonderful discourse i've been having about it with amazing bloggers like sakublogs who i urge you to check out!
chapter 353
this case is so, so special to me because it fundamentally captures the essence of shinran.
vermouth is about to take ran's life but the railing she is leaning on breaks and she's about fall to her impending doom... until ran intuitively grabs her arm and tries to save her:
Tumblr media
you'd think that shinichi would urge ran to let go, cause that's what any rational person would do, right? but he doesn't. instead he assists ran. again, WHY?
Tumblr media
because... they can't fucking help themselves. because THAT'S JUST WHO THEY ARE.
shinichi and ran are completely led by their intuition, optimism and idealism. nobody values justice, courage and human life the way do, it's in their bones and hearts, it's not something they grow into, it's in their nature.
their spiritual connection is their most defining quality as a couple and it's the reason why i'm convinced that shinran is gosho's best written ship and beyond that, one of the most brilliantly written romances of all time.
it's difficult to do shinran justice in condensed essays like this, but i hope i was able to illustrate their amazing personalities and offer some insight into their captivating bond.
it's why i've been closely following their story since my early childhood. they have the same effect on me they have on other dcmk characters. shinichi and ran inspire me, they touch my soul and restore my faith in people. they're not just a cute couple - they're a symbol of hope.
vermouth puts it best:

M27 Spoilers
I've had a few days to think about it. It was funny for the first day but honestly, I'm quite tired of all of this now. I've fell out of Detective Conan for a long time and have mostly kept to the Magic Kaito side of things. But the writing problems have been growing ever since Gosho started to use Detco's writing format in MK.
For the new reveal, I'm not even that bothered by the "Kaito & Shinichi are related" part. It's been 25+ years, shippers are going to ship. What I hate is that it ties Kaito's story to DC even more, how it makes both the Kudo and the Kuroba parents seem even more unlikable- and for what? What does making Toichi and Yusaku brothers add to the story?
If Gosho really wanted to build up to this reveal, he could've had a flashback chapter in MK. Maybe during Toichi's funeral where Yusaku shows up in the crowd somewhere, have Kaito mistaken him for his father because they look alike.
Kaito's main appearances these days are in DC, where he can only be shown as KID during a heist. Yet whenever we go back to MK, we get the exact same format. Despite years of MK's run, we still have little to no information of who Toichi really was. For a plot whose main character's core motivation is revenge for his father, we get little story about what his father actually did, or any scenes of Kaito investigating past KID heists.
It is true that Gosho has hinted about the reveal in past interviews, and lamp-shaded it in the recent DC Hakuba chapter (Ch1119). But it doesn't change the fact that it contradicts things that he has already written (Shinichi's Childhood Adventures), the fact that it took him 10 years to get to this reveal. If your strongest evidence for this reveal having a precedence is, the author has hinted at it before in years-old interviews outside of the story itself, then it is simply bad writing.
Anyways, if you want a story where a funny thief man is a horrible father and gets thrown through the wringer by the narrative, read Arsène Lupin instead!

A/N 4) Please forgive the typos!
There are a few easter eggs in this fanfic. Let me know if you guys managed to find them :) Without further ado. Enjoy!
Shinichi was annoyed.
He clearly knew he was annoyed.
His gums were aching because he was clenching his jaw way too tightly, his hands were tightly fisted and he just knew for sure that he had a very ugly expression on his face.
Since he aspired to be a detective he had deduced why he was feeling this way but no amount of rational logic was helping him right now.
Meanwhile, the core reason for his irritation remained completely oblivious to his agony and was happily chatting away with him.
He sighed and went to his seat not like he could interrupt.
************
Shinichi's emotions were all over the place.
He glanced at Ran who was chatting with Fuji Kaname. The two of them had become acquainted when both of them were assigned morning duty and to make things worse a seat change had happened. Shinichi and Ran who were seated together previously were separated and that guy now occupied the seat next to Ran, meanwhile, Shinichi was thrown at the back of the class. Throughout his classes, Shinichi's eyes would wander towards them. He would have a strange churning in his stomach every time he saw them interacting. He knew what this meant. He has always known what Ran was to him.
The problem was the other boys were looking at her too. Back in elementary school they had a crush on her too but were too immature and childish to figure it out and acted like bullies towards her.
But now in middle school, these boys were trying to put in effort to talk to her and vie for her attention. He was well aware of the eyes on her, the interested, curious gaze, the infatuated look anytime Ran was around. Shinichi was almost glad that Ran was oblivious to the attention she was getting. At least she was not interested in them.
"Shinichi? What happened? Are you alright?"
Shinichi jerked up and came face to face with a pair of concerned blue eyes.
"R-Ran?? What's up?" Shinichi called out in surprise on seeing her.
"Oh I just wanted to confirm what time your soccer practice will get over today? Regional matches will be starting soon, right?"
"Oh it's just the usual time for this week, we will have extended practice from next week."
He answered her automatically.
"Hmmm." Ran had a look pondering look on her face. Meanwhile, Shinichi snuck a glance at Fuji who was staring at them and their eyes met. Fuji didn't turn his gaze away from them.
"Then I guess we can go back together. Is that alright?" Ran asked cheerily.
"Yeah, sure." Shinichi answered in a daze and Ran went back to her seat.
Shinichi felt a bubble of joy in his heart.
*******
"It sure has been a while since we walked back together." Ran stated simply.
"Ah..um."
"But I guess it is for this week only when our club practices will end together. Next week, I guess the soccer team will stay back for longer time."
"Hmm."
"Are you match-ups out already?"
"Hmmm."
"Shinichi?? Shinichi are you listening to me?? Shinichi??? Shinichi look out!!!!"
"Whaa..."
Shinichi couldn't get the image of Fuji and Ran out of his mind.
Should I ask her about him? Am I meddling? Will she become conscious of him if I ask her and start paying attention to him??
In his worries, he missed the steps in front of him causing him to tumble down and fall flat on his face. Thankfully it was not very high and just three steps.
"Shinichi are you alright??"
Ran crouched near him and checked up on him.
"What were you thinking?? You are hurt." Ran said softly wiping away the dirt.
"I am fine... I was just-
"Thinking about Sherlock Holmes." Ran finished for him absent mindedly while taking out a small first-aid pouch from her bag.
"No it was something else." Shinichi defended himself.
"Really? Shinichi are you capable of thinking of something else apart from Holmes and Scoccer, I didn't know that." Ran poked fun at him and chuckled as she cleaned his hands and face.
You, you idiot. I think of you. A little too much.
"So what got you in such a daze that you tumbled down like this?" Ran asked now bandaging him up.
Shinichi just stared at her in a daze. His eyes drank in her features, her hair, her eyes, her nose, supple-looking cheeks which were just waiting to be pinched and dare I go lower. Her lips.
NOOOOOOO!!!!! He felt his cheeks burn
Shinichi smashed himself mentally.
She just had to be the prettiest looking gal, didnt she. Shinichi almost resented her.
Cant you just stick to me? Like, forever? Why the hell is this Fuji guy making googly eyes at you!? Punch him away with your karate!
"Why is your face turning red? Don't tell me you have a fever too. You looked listless in the class today as well." Ran came closer to check his temperature.
"Enough! I am alright. Don't touch me so recklessly like this."
Shinichi couldn't stand this torment and before he knew it he was sprinting away from Ran as if set on fire.
Oh the pains of an awkward teenage boy with the girl he crushes on.
UGGHHHH!! What have I done!? She definitely hates me now. What do I do? I didn't want to behave like this. She must be hurt.
Panting heavily and completely out of breath Shinichi entered the house, ran to his room and slumped by the door.
He did not know how to handle this jealousy and worst of all he ended up being irritable towards Ran of all people.
I really need to apologise to her.
*****
"Shin-chan come down for dinner."
Shinichi's intercom buzzed.
The Kudou mansion was pretty big so they had intercoms in the rooms for easy communications.
Shinichi came down and took his place at the table and saw his parents share a glance.
"Ittedakimasu."
Dinner was strangely quiet and Shinichi observed the strange behaviour of his parents who kept glancing at each other and at him.
"So what is it you guys want to talk about?"
Yukiko and Yusaku looked at Shinichi though not very surprised with his observation.
"Well Shin-chan, your father and I were discussing a few things and we are deliberating the option of moving abroad, US to be more specific."
Shinichi was caught a little off guard by the statement.
"Nothing is final yet. We are just discussing and we would like to hear your opinion about it. I know it is a lot to take in right now but think about it."
"But why the sudden idea?" Shinichi asked slowly.
"It's not really sudden."
True, the US was a frequent family destination for them.
"As you know Yusaku's book on the Night Baron has become an instant hit and for research purposes, the US is a good option. The country has a broad spectrum of studies and case analogies."
The 'Night Baron' novel series was a very well-planned plot. Yusaku Kudo wrote individual crime thriller novels but it always had a shadowy and mysterious character who manipulated the protagonists in very subtle ways. Not something which would be picked in the first reading. After writing multiple novels with such a vague figure a lot of conspiracy theories were making rounds on the internet as to who this mysterious person was. Finally, a few weeks ago the first book In the Night Baron series was released which literally disappeared from the shelves within a day. The people devoured the book like crazy and it was still on the bestseller for six consecutive weeks already.
"Shin-chan, moving abroad will be a big change but I think living in the States will be good for you too. Think about it okay."
"Is that all?"
Yukiko and Yusaku looked at each other and nodded. Shinichi walked to his room and crashed on his bed.
He could only think of her.
Will I be able to leave Ran? Will she miss me? Will I become a distant forgotten childhood memory? Will she fall in love with someone and become his girlfriend?
Fuji's lovestruck face flashed in his mind and why just him, so many countless guys were infatuated with her. Who will win over her heart?
I-I- cant...
He had a vague idea of what he needed to do and for that, he needed to speak to hakase urgently.
****The next morning****
"Hakase? Are you up? Hakaseee??"
The door clicked open, "What is Shinichi-kun? So early in the morning?" Agasa- hakase said yawning and still very much sleepy.
Like a cheeky brat, Shinichi just pushed hakase inside and said,"I need a favour hakase and only you can do it."
"What is it?" Hakase asked a little more alert now.
Shinichi looked at him and deliberated for a moment but in the end hakase was best possible option.
"My parents are planning to move abroad hakase. I want you to take legal guardianship of me in their absence." Shinichi said in a blunt and straightforward manner.
"NANIIII??? Shinichi-kun do you have any idea what you are saying!?" Hakase was completely bewildered at the Shinichi's request.
"Please hakase, do me this favour! You and my father have been friends even before I was born, you have seen me since I was an infant and you just live next door to me. I-I have my reasons for not wanting to leave Japan and you are the only possible way I can convince my parents to let me stay here. Please." Shinichi deeply bowed his head in front of Hakase.
"Shinichi-kun!" Hakase was flustered by the sudden development and the request.
"Have you told your parents about it?"
"No, not yet." Shinichi said slowly.
"But why do you want to stay? Studying in the States is a wonderful opportunity, especially if you want to be a detective."
Shinichi looked up at hakase, his eyes showed a determined gleam.
*******
Feeling slightly better after talking to hakase Shinichi set off for school.
*****
Shinichi kept glancing at the clock and at the door of the classroom waiting for Ran to appear who had still not arrived. Ran was not late yet but it was later than usual time for her. Just then Ran walked in through the door.
Shinichi moved towards her but the moment their eyes met, a look of pain flashed in Ran's eyes and she hurried away form him to rush to her seat.
"Ohayo Mouri. It's rare for you to be this late." Fuji greeted her
Ran just passed him a sheepish grin and settled down in her avoiding Shinichi who was just left stunned in his place but quietly went back to his seat.
Of course, she is avoiding me, especially after how I behaved.
****
Shinichi tried multiple times to talk to Ran throughout the day but Ran successfully managed to avoid him and before he knew it she was sprinting out the door the moment classes got over. Shinichi felt dejected and was not sure what to do.
"Kudou?"
Shinichi turned and came face to face with Fuji and flinched.
You are the last person I want to see right now.
"I saw you were trying to talk to Mouri today."
"...."
"Arent you being a little too pushy? She is clearly avoiding you. Stop bothering her."
"Mind your own business." Shinichi frowned and shot back coldly.
"I will mind my own business after you stop bothering her," Fuji said haughtily, not backing down.
"It sure is a good play, playing innocent childhood playmates and taking advantage of that."
"Fuji-kun!" Ran called out horrified.
Shinchi and Fuji looked in surprise to see Ran standing there, looking at Fuji with hurt and disappointment. He paled under her hurt gaze.
"Mouri! I was just-" Fuji started now, stripped off his arrogance but stopped unable to say anything.
"Please never talk like that ever again," Ran said firmly.
"Let's go Shinichi."
She grabbed Shinichi's wrist and they walked away. Their footsteps sounded loud in the empty corridor but Ran refused to slow down as she was still feeling extremely annoyed.
"Ran calm down." Shinichi started slowly in a placating tone.
"How could you let him talk to you like that Shinichi!?" Ran glared at him feeling extremely agitated.
No Ran, I was actually just a second away from punching him in the face, you arriving there actually prevented a fistfight.
Ran was seething, she really thought Fuji-kun was a nice person. He was nice and polite as a seatmate, they got along fairly well but to think he had such a shallow opinion of her relationship with Shinichi.
Shinichi and her have been together since kindergarten, she has known him since she was four. All through elementary school and even now in the second year of middle school they have always been together. Also, Shinichi always had valid reasons for acting in a certain way and Ran knew for sure that none of his actions were ever meant to hurt her.
"I thought you were mad at me," Shinichi said slowly.
"I was a little annoyed but right now I am angry for a completely different reason." Ran huffed.
"Don't mind it, I don't think he really meant it anyway." Shinichi didn't want to defend him but he sort of understood where he was coming from.
"But even so." She mumbled.
"Gomen Ran, for yesterday," said Shinichi
Ran looked at him. The deserted corridor was dyed in an orangish-yellow hue of the setting sun and Shinichi's eyes were fixed on her with an unwavering strange intensity. They were so sincere, shaking almost shining. She felt a pang in her chest, it felt like a bittersweet ache. It didn't hurt but somehow it did, it felt warm and lovely. Ran felt a vague realisation. She has felt like this before but for some reason, this feeling was getting stronger with every passing day.
The moment Shinichi looks at me like that I will forgive him for anything and everything in less than a heartbeat.
A sweet smile blossomed on her face reflecting the warmth she felt in her heart.
"Shinichi is Shinichi no matter what." She said smiling. Shinichi grinned at her somehow understanding and not understanding the statement. She felt the same, the words that came out of her mouth were something which perplexed Ran herself but she didn't want to indulge much in these complex intense emotions for now.
This deduction nerd and her were walking back together, which made her happy.
*****
"Tou-san, kaa-san, please listen to me." Shinichi spoke with a deep breath.
Here goes...
"I wish to stay in Japan, I don't want to move abroad."
"But Shin-chan-"
"I spoke to Agasa-hakase, if you guys permit then he can take over my guardianship. He said that if you both agree to it then he will agree as well."
"What about wanting to pursue the path of being a detective?" Yusaku asked bluntly.
Shinichi clenched his fist and prepared to answer.
I got through to Agasa-hakase, I am sure I will get my intensions through to my parents as well.
"Tou-san, kaa-san, being a detective is my dream, and I wish to achieve and fulfil that with my own strength and efforts. Even if it takes a little longer, I want to remain in Japan. If in future certain conditions turn favourable I will think of going abroad, till then please let me stay here. Onegaishimasu!"
Shinichi felt a tense silence in the room but he looked at his parents with the same determination and desire which had won over Agasa-hakase in the morning.
"Fine then, I guess." Yusaku said cooly.
"Really!?" Shinichi shouted in surprise.
"But Yuu-chan!!" Yukiko whined but Yusaku managed to placate and reassure her.
Shinichi felt a sweet relief on getting acknowledgement from his parents.
I can do it! I will definitely become a great detective. I will be by her side. The girl who carries a first aid pouch for me. The girl who values the relationships of people around her. The girl who has me wrapped around her fingers. I won't have to part from her, for now, this is more than enough. For now, this will do.
*****
"Please it's alright. I really don't want to impose on your family time like this." Ran said flustered and distressed to Yukiko-san.
"Oh Ran-chan, don't worry about it. We really want you to join us."
Ran glanced towards Shinichi for help who simply shrugged his shoulders. Though fireworks of madddening happiness were exploding in his heart.
Good job mom!!!
"Alright then! It's a four-day trip and pack accordingly Ran-chan."
"Yes."
Ran was completely shocked to find that the Kudos had planned to move to America. She felt as if she had been robbed of her breath for a moment but when she found out that Shinichi was going to stay in Japan she felt a trickle of relief in her veins.
He is not going! He is not going to leave me.
As of now, she was in the Kudou mansion and was invited to Shinichi's parent's villa mansion in Karuizawa. The Kudos were planning to move to America at the end of summer vacation. They would be spending time with Shinichi in Japan during the holidays. Knowing that they would be leaving in two months Ran felt distressed about being invited to a family vacation but on Yukiko-san's insistence, she gave in.
Ran and Shinichi's eyes met.
Is this really ok?
Yes. Yes, this is perfect. Shinichi felt his face growing warm and looked away.
These kids really grow up really fast.
Yukiko's eyes gleamed with nostalgia and mischief as she looked at her son sharing a moment with her (future daughter-in-law?).
A/N - Damnnn this is too long. Thanks to everyone who stuck with it till the very end. Please let me know how was, I look forward for your feedback!!

Okaaaay. Just to clear things up...
Vermouth is not a redeemable character. She's not. She has done some atrocious and horrible things. Everyone knows that. She's an antagonist at her core and anyone who disagrees is basically in denial.
But.
That doesn't mean I can't like her character. She's interesting and actually complex. She's a grey character that does bad things but the has moments where she does things that make you think. She basically has two weaknesses and they are Shinichi and Ran. They are the light and hope she had completely lost and given up on after so long being part of the organization. She wants them to win. She wants Shinichi to put an end to the organization. She believes wholeheartedly that Shinichi is needed for that to happen. She said it in the episode of Akai's "death" ("We only need one silver bullet"). She has let both of them live in multiple occasions and kept them safe. Why? Does she just want to protect them because they represent so much to her? Does she protect them because she actually wants to be rid of the organization that has made her do so many terrible things? Does she want to protect them because they are dear to her one and only friend Yukiko? So many factors.
She is an actually interesting character. I love every scene she's in. She needs to appear more. But that does not make me think she's good and should be free and happy at the end.
I am one firm believer that she will be one of the few deaths that we can expect during the final showdown against the organization. I will stay on that hill and I will be shocked if she makes it out alive. She will die sacrificing herself. That's what I think. But that doesn't make her a good person entirely either.

To be fair like 90% of people Shinichi meets want to strangle him, and Haruka knows this. So it's no surprise to her that someone eventually gives in to the urge.
you know that old tumblr post where it's like a movie gif of someone being kicked through a glass door with the caption "when you see your best friend at the grocery store" and there's a comment going "why tf would you do that" and the OP replies "you must not have a best friend"?

Sumire Yoshizawa
Ok so back to P5R backstage narrative and what’s going on with Sumire! This analysis is backed on this post by burningfestivalpersona who makes really crucial observations.
Though the backstory of the sisters is unexplored, Kasumi’s death evidenced Sumire’s long term issues: she was suicidally depressed, suffering from (heavily implied) quick fatigue, utterly convinced of her own worthlessness, and constantly experiencing the delusional, escapist desire of becoming Kasumi, or dying. Beside Sumire’s survivor’s guilt, it’s fair to recognize that her negative reaction to Kasumi’s comfort resulted in her sister’s sacrifice.
I think Sumire’s issues festered on several factors. Her sister’s undeniable superiority coupled with Kasumi’s overcompensating support was one. Sumire’s inferiority complex towards her near-perfect sister was fueled by being helped throughout her life by Kasumi herself, instilling resentment to any attempts of goodwill. Her self-loathing created a despondent reaction to Kasumi's attempts at consoling her, believing it to be patronization rather than genuine care. However, the depth of Sumire’s depression can only be understood through her lack of a support system, as she begins to be able to confront the truth by becoming acquaintances with Joker and the Phantom Thieves.
What do I mean by lacking a support system? On this I refer to the observations stated on the mentioned post. Sumire wasn’t on a first-name basis with any of her classmates. She didn’t have friends from her previous school, and even Kasumi, though more extroverted and popular, didn’t have friends that would keep tabs on Sumire’s deteriorating mental health. I think this is meant to imply that both sisters were so absorbed in their gymnastic training, they didn’t have time to establish lasting bonds with their peers. They were isolated by their rigorous schedule and pressure to succeed. We’ll get back to this.
At her core, Sumire felt that Kasumi was more deserving of love and affection than her. The names of the twins reflect on this dynamic: Kasumi is often translated as "mist," while Sumire alludes to violets- this creates the imagery of Sumire being overshadowed by Kasumi. This was ingrained into her psyche, and it went beyond jealousy or low esteem. I think I know why.
Tumblr media
This is an image from Kasumi’s Death Cutscene. When Sumire begins recalling all the reasons why she’s inferior to Kasumi, we witness this tournament. The press is hyping Kasumi, and all the spectators are there to see her.
From Sumire’s point of view, we see Kasumi hold up thew winner’s trophy from up-close. She was next to her sister when Kasumi won, likely in 2nd or 3rd place. We don’t understands this at first: it feels like Kasumi is the only one competing. Her overwhelming presence makes us feel that way.
Tumblr media
We first realize Sumire was competing because we see her fanfare in the stands, dressed in sky blue. However, it’s easy to lose them in the crowd of pink, cheering for Kasumi. This is when it gets interesting.
Tumblr media
These are the Yoshizawas, dressed in pink. Both sisters were competing, yet their mother and (presumably?) grandmother were cheering for Kasumi only. Their mother also looks unmistakably like Kasumi herself.
This is all pure speculation, but I think Sumire’s deep-seated insecurities were nurtured in her very household. As far as meeting her family goes, the player only comes face to face with Shinichi Yoshizawa, the director of Good Morning Japan at Akasaka Mitsuke. He’s a busy man, yet a caring father. He was the first to get treatment for Sumire’s deteriorating mental health, and even defied Maruki’s Ideal Reality on the 1st of January by refusing, against all odds, to mistake Sumire for Kasumi. A testament to his fidelity.
To contrast him, I think Sumire’s mother was the first to push Kasumi’s identity onto Sumire. I imagine she used to be a gymnastic herself, but was unable to succeed. She became a stay at home wife after marrying, and later propelled the twins into gymnastics; her passion. She placed all her expectations and love on her look-alike daughter, vicariously living through Kasumi’s success, while -ignorantly- neglecting Sumire. Referencing Naoya & Kazuya from the Persona Manga, their mother hit a depressive low when Kasumi died, worsening Sumire’s survivor’s guilt - so when Sumire began acting as Kasumi, her mother was quick to follow the charade.
Backing on my previous note, I hypothesize the reason for the sisters’ lack of acquaintances on a first-name basis had to be related to their rigorous schedule. This was imposed by their overbearing mother, as their father, though overprotective, never isolated Sumire from her peers. The sisters’ rivalry was fueled by their mother’s favoritism, thus explaining Sumire’s severe inferiority complex. I see it in a similar fashion to Omeleto’s Second Best, and with this lenses, I can more easily understand Sumire’s trauma.
