some comments last night are causing me to come out with a hot take: i don't think kamen rider ryuki should necessarily be counted as "time loop media"
i mean i very well might have referred to it as such myself some years ago for lack of a better descriptor and it's not like i'm some academic gatekeeper of the terminology, but to me the qualities of time loop centric fiction are thus
A. the span of looped time should be relatively short. traditionally a single day though i'm willing to be very lenient and give it up to a month or two. even being generous ryuki does not fit, taking place over an entire year, and the "do over" episode specifically spanning about half a year.
B. far more importantly, the POV character should live through the events of the loop multiple times onscreen (montage is acceptable). shinji only consciously experiences one single round of repeated events.
C. when the character accomplishes their task the time loop ends and they are finally allowed to progress forward in time normally again, to the next day/week. in the do over episode it is not shinji but kanzaki accomplishing his goal that lets time continue on, and at the end of the show the exact opposite happens - the characters are sent backward chronologically one final time, to start again from square one.
of course one might argue that the loop of ryuki is more implied - the idea that the rider was has happened several times before the one we see. and i do subscribe to this idea myself. however if we take ryukis movies & such as a vaguely canon depiction of that then another problem arises: they present rider wars that occured notably differently every time. whereas a true time loop's events should be practically the same in every iteration, save only for those small factors changed by the protag's behavior.
but i get it, y'know? "time reset media" is just not as snappy a name. 🤔

last rb made me search "time loop" on riderwiki and the only real result is yongou!? it's insane that a franchise with multiple ultra powerful guys with time abilities has used such a great trope basically never. like in retrospect how the hell did masamune never trap hiiro in a time loop? how was there never a jaded miserable woz doppelganger who'd been stuck in a time loop for years?
