Getting away with murder was glorious. Some people were run over, others were stabbed to death or shot. Some were even burned, and the evidence was easy to cover up- at least for a while. One of the most memorable kills meant a lot to you because it was your ex-boyfriend. That kill you dragged it out and made him suffer for as long as possible. There were so many tools and apparatus to use and you made good of them all. From using pliers and a screwdriver to nail guns and acid, you made him pay.

Once Kurt was caught and arrested, you planned to show up at his trial and be there for him as his biggest supporter. Despite your objections, he took all the credit for the killings. The trial declared him guilty on all counts of murder and they sentenced him to 10 years and 2 consecutive sentences. Once in prison, he wrote to you and called you every day. When he got a cell phone and snuck into prison, you sent him sexy nudes and he did the same for you. You visited him and had conjugal visitations. Even with the cameras on and people watching, you had the most mind-blowing sex ever. It was some of the best sex of your life. You even married him in prison. Once he got out, you knew he would make up for lost time. You eventually became a guard at the prison and got to see him every single day and fuck as often as possible. He was rough with you and you were the same way with him. The other inmates were probably jealous, but soon enough, you and Kurt escaped. Once out of prison, you established new identities and moved to another country to get a fresh new start. Until the killings started up again, that is. No matter what, you wouldn't let him go.

He had made a vow in prison he would no longer kill just anyone. Only the people who deserved it. Before he met you someone he had driven with spree a comedian Jesse confronted him. She tried to kill him, but he got away. It was a regret of his letting her get away, but he would move on. Newly established someplace safe with him, you promised each other you would stay together no matter what. To make things official, you had a small and private ceremony with Kurt streaming it for his followers. No one knew where the undisclosed location was, but it was a wondrous and beautiful event.

Neither of you needed extra income since you had streams and paid ones, making tons of sexy videos and live streams together. You used the dark web for your kills together and always wore masks to keep it discreet. When killing, you would keep your rings on a necklace to still show your love but not to give anything away to anyone who might recognize either of you. Leaving your families and old lives behind, you lived for each other. Having so many chances to kill and get away with it was the best. Only the most extreme crimes you saw fit to punish. The worst being cold-blooded murderers and molesters. Finding each victim carefully, you had them meet their demise. Kurt even became a hitman for hire. Eventually, though, you both stopped killing and settled down just living normal lives. Life went on pretty much normally, but you remembered fondly and would sometimes reminisce about old times. Never staying in any place too long, you traveled and just lived life one day at a time together.

really boggles my mind how, in the discourse around Big Corporate Media Productions being too bogged down in marketability and revenue these days, people just. forget that smaller, creator-driven projects still exist.

"all the movies coming out of hollywood these days are made to be as unobjectionable as possible to appeal to mass audiences and they're full of product placement and military propaganda" okay. watch other movies then. there are mid- to micro-budget films coming out ALL the time on EVERY conceivable platform. check movie critic blogs and film festival entries and the new releases tab on your streaming service of choice.

"all the songs coming out these days are made to go viral on tiktok in easily clippable chunks and then be forgotten in a week" okay. listen to other music then. there are record labels that are nothing more than one guy, three buckets, and an audio engineer. there are artists out there who are making music that is weirder and less marketable than you can possibly imagine, who have <100 monthly listeners on spotify. you will love them. go find them. browse bandcamp or indie music communities or ask your friends for recommendations; i guarantee they are all sitting on one that they are DYING to share with you.

"all the video games these days are huge expensive bloated open world shooters full of microtransactions and unnecessarily detailed graphics that won't run on a computer that's only a year old" you know what i'm about to say. there are games that exist outside of the AAA space that are smaller, more focused, made by developers who aren't being ground into a fine paste by overwork. buy a bundle on humble or itch, find a streamer who focuses on indie titles.

it can be daunting to step outside of the "things you've already heard of" and "things that have been advertised to you" bubble, but i PROMISE you, there is so so so much more media out there that you will LOVE that isn't the product of some corporate executive focused on the bottom line. you just have to LOOK AROUND a little bit.

Streaming had mucked up things for 1st window shows because studios sent their tv shows to their own streaming services (this is why steaming service become unprofitable).

I feel like I'm missing something about streamers' business model. I thought that subscriptions to a streamer (giving the subscriber access to an up-to-date catalog including all of an associated studio's properties) turned a profit, compensating for lost syndication opportunities. Can you explain this at all to an outsider?

Streaming was profitable when it was only Netflix. Now there's too many streaming services, over 50! And it's hella expensive to launch and maintain the services, which is why Apple and Disney are losing at least $500 million in operating cost per quarter and why HBO Max are purging contents left and right from their library, because it's too expensive to keep every contents in their servers.

Imagine this, there are 7 major studios and if back in 2003, those 7 studios decided they no longer put their contents on DVD, but instead each studio come out with their own disc-based format and players and only allow you to watch their content if you buy their player. Would you want to have 7 different disc players piled up in front of your TV? Nope. Maybe you'll have 3 disc players at most. Americans subscribe an average of 3 streaming services, they can't subscribe to every streaming services out there.

2021 is considered the year where people have tried all the streaming services and picking which one to stay and which one to cancel. From 2022 going forward it's about keeping subscribers; in the past year both Netflix and Disney have reported losing millions of subscribers. There's even reports of people starting to ditch streaming for cable because they just can't keep up. Just like there are over 600 scripted tv shows, it's too much and you can't watch everything.

With that said, network broadcast shows still have bigger audiences than cable or streaming shows. As big as cable and streaming are, there are still a lot of people who only watch network broadcast tv. There will always be people who come home from work and want to turn the TV on and leave it running in the background while they do laundry or make dinner, and they don’t have the time or attention for an event, but they will happily put on something old and comfortable, and they don’t mind the ads.

In order for Streaming to become profitable, they'll have to move contents to Free-Ad supported streaming services (FAST) that are basically the traditional terrestrial television model. Despite losing million subscribers, Netflix will be one of the few premier streaming services making money by driving new subscribers and/or retaining old subscribers with 20-year old shows with 100+ episodes, like Grey’s Anatomy and Supernatural.

ETA: @brunnismemorybank, physical medias like dvds are superior. With SPN dvds, you get the original classic rock music, not the sad elevator music from Netflix.

History of US Coast Guard Birthday

The history of the coast guard in the United States can be traced back to the year 1790 when it was established by the first Congress who allowed Secretary of the Treasury, Alexander Hamilton to combat smuggling and tariff evaders with his fleet of ten ships. Originally called the Revenue Marine Service, or Revenue Cutter Service, the service was combined in 1915 with the US Lifesaving Service to become the Coast Guard.

During times of peace, the US Coast Guard acts as part of the Department of Homeland Security and then becomes part of the Department of Defense in times of war. Now, with more than 230 years of history, this important entity offers a great deal of support through navigation, port security, environmental protection and wartime readiness.

In the United States, there are thousands of events nation-wide for people to get involved in and show their support. In the UK, although not directly associated with HM Coast Guard, the RNLI (Royal National Lifeboat Institution) is a charity organization with the sole aim of rescuing those in distress at sea. They launch over 6500 times a year, and have saved over 134,000 lives since their founding. Pakistan Coast Guard Day is celebrated on September 8.

A lot of filmmakers around the world typically state of short films being nothing more than calling cards to showcase potential producers/studios on what your skills are as a filmmaker. I can’t blame them fully as generally, we weren’t educated on recent and ever growing platforms either dedicated to shorts/videos beyond just YouTube and Vimeo… and only educated in film schools that the only way to earn any money is from private premiers and hopefully win prize money from film festivals.

And before you go ahead and say “But surely distributors can grab my film from me and put it out there on NETFLIX and Amazon prime and such…” Oh you sweet yet naive idiot.

Firstly, notable and underground distributors generally don’t take shorts unless its made from Pixar or a famous director or something since they get as much eyeballs as much compared to features and documentaries.

Secondly, Most popular streaming services as a rule of thumb don’t insert shorts into their catalogues. Not many people watch as much shorts in the same way we watch features or doco’s, therefore, they would consider it a waste of money for streaming services to acquisition into their catalogues if not many people by design are going to watch them frequently.

But that’s not to say its all doom and gloom with no way to earn something from your shorts. Luckily, upon during my research on film distribution whilst making my first short outside of film school “FULL CIRCLE” I would like to shed some hopeful light on new filmmakers out there that have just created a short and clueless with what do do with them more than just slot them into your showreel or film festivals. Here are the tips, ideas and platforms you can submit and monetise your shorts;

Theatrical releases = You can contact a local cinema to hire a cinema hall for you to showcase your short film on a certain date and create a ticked screening event. If their quotes aren’t listed on their websites, you can ask for a quote to help calculate costs (including marketing & DCP testing). It would be wise to contact and network with local filmmakers where you can showcase other filmmakers shorts to aid with splitting the screening hire costs. In exchange you can offer a profit share system with all involved. Make sure you invest into marketing your event locally via word of mouth and social media’s to get bums on seats. You can also offer mercy to throw into the mix like posters, t shirts, USB’ etc… if done right, this can be a potential source of income from your short film.

. Website = You can create a filmmakers website to showcase and sell your shorts directly from your followers and customers. The price is up to you and can create one via Wix, square space, Shopify etc…

. Shortly = Shortly is a platform/App with the intent of exclusively streaming short films around the world. It’s a Combination of SVOD/AVOD options for filmmakers to monetise their shorts when they submit here. It’s a relatively new platform but its gaining traction amongst new filmmakers and new streamers.

. Vidiverse = founded by Notable Director Alex Proyas (The Crow, iRobot, Gods of Egypt), Vidiverse was created with the intention of kickstarting the commerciality of shorts in both auteur and non auteur style shorts. Shorts there can be viewed via a transaction or through a subscription. There are a few originals along with being able to directly submit your short here.

. INDIEFLIX = IndieFlix takes almost any bit of video content independently made from shorts to features to series to documentaries. They do a 50/50 split of the total generated revenue of the platform as a whole with the platforms and filmmakers.

. Film hub = (kanopy, slash shorts) A platform where filmmakers big and small can self upload almost any form of content wether they are Features, shorts, Documentaries or music videos. They’ll be forwarded to all the streaming platforms under their belt that accept your content and have some big streaming companies like Amazon prime, Apple TV and Hulu etc… Their primary methods of earning money are TVOD, SVOD and AVOD. Ther’es no upfront fees to upload your shorts but they do take 20% of total revenue made monthly or quarterly.

. Cineshort = An app platform where they showcase short films around the world both old titles to award winning festival run shorts. Their primary method of earning money are TVOD, SVOD and AVOD.

. WeShorts = A short film streaming platform based in Italy but they accept shorts that contain any language. They operate under an SVOD model.

. Facebook watch = This one goes without saying but for those living under a rock for a few years, you can upload and monetise all kinds of video content on facebook watch. As long as you have a facebook account/page, you’re good. They operate and monetise on via ads per certain views (they fluctuate and very due to type of content and from location to location). This seems to be an ever growing platform for short form content.

. Twitter/X = Thanks to their recent ad revenue share program, you can upload your short film and posts related to your content in general and start earning even use from ads and sponsors.. There are some conditions you must follow through however to be eligible, like having a premium account, min 500 followers and at least 5M organic impressions within 3 months, so try to drive as much traffic as you possibly can to achieve this creatori to start making money on twitter.

. FENIX360 = A growing TVOD platform dedicated to artists and creators as a marketplace for them to sell their content. These range from pre ticket releases to mercy to videos to even NFT’s. You can manually set the price on your short film to any amount desired during the upload process.

. Instagram reel/TikTok = cmon, you don’t really need me to let you know this is a good way right? You can re export your shorts into vertical aspect ratio along with cutting them into bite size chunks in top multiple parters and release them accordingly. They can be monetised via their creator programs where and add may show on a previous reel and earn a portion of the ad revenue from that.

. Argo media = an established streaming service that’s dedicate to showing shorts from first releases to award winning shorts straight from Sundance. There are some shorts there with now prolific talent like Benedict Cumberbatch. Who would’ve thought?

. Dailymotion = Another form of YouTube that operates on the same basis but doesn’t seem to be as popular compared to YouTube for some reason. Their CPM seems quite alright being $75 per hour played on your video per 1000 views, regardless of the type of content. If you can market your short well to draw people in to Dailymotion, you’d be making a good move I believe.

. Bitchute = A version of YouTube that’s more aligned with non fiction content, however you’re still at liberty to upload fictional shorts and such. This would seem like an ideal platform for short videos/documentaries. They’re operated and monetised via a shared AVOD scheme akin to twitters new scheme.

. Indie shorts = An app platform specifically for indie short films. They showcase shorts from no budget to relatively high budget shorts in any genre. They operate and monetised via AVOD.

. Shorts TV = A very notable platform tailored for shorts that has been going on for a while now. Most of their viewers stem from the UK and Europe but are growing to a global scale. They operate and monetised via AVOD and SVOD methods.

. Shortindies = ShortIndies is…you guessed it, another exclusively short film streaming platforms primarily popular in Europe. They’re a combo of SVOD and AVOD options.

. Minute shorts = This is an OTT platform for short from India. However, they alo include western short films. Primarily AVOD based structure

. Vimeo/Vimeo OTT = This one is pretty known in the filmmaker circles. Think of it as YouTube for creatives. You can see content ranging from music videos to feature length films. They can operate and monetise via TVOD and AVOD methods. You can either set a custom price for people to directly buy or just place ads before hand for free for people to enjoy.

. YouTube = This is an obvious one. If for some reason you don’t know what this platforms , its the biggest online video platform to date. You can earn money from uploading your short film onto here. It’s a 55/45 split with average CPM being $18-36 per 1000 views (at least in Australia, rates vary from location to location) but can generally earn a bigger CPM if your short is longer than 10 minutes.

. Patreon = A platforms where you can connect a YouTube account with and get people to donate to your channel for exclusive perks that you can custom create for your donors. You can control donation amount and different level of perks per subscription.

. Buy me a coffee = Basically a newer alternate version of Patreon. Similar details as written above for Patreon.

. Crypt TV = a youtube network for horror short form content where they’re open to other filmmakers to submit horror shorts onto their platform for an agreed upon cut per frequency of time.

. Rooster Teeth TV = A well known production company with their own platform beyond just their youtube channel. They’ve been going on for years and are know willing to take your shorts to put onto their established channels only for a 10-20% cut per quarter. Not that bad compared to other alternatives distribution wise.

. Gumroad = Just like FENIX360. Gumroad is a reputable TVOD platform dedicated to artists and creators as a marketplace for them to sell their content. These range from e-books to merch to videos. You can manually set the price on your short film to any amount desired during the upload process.

. Payhip = Just like FENIX360 and Gumroad, Payhip is a growing yet still reputable TVOD platform dedicated to artists and creators as a marketplace for them to sell their content. These range from e-books to merch to videos. You can manually set the price on your short film to any amount desired during the upload process.

. Koji = Koji seems to the creators content website that has it all. It’s the most perfect combination of Patreon, Gumroad and facebook rolled into 1 site. You can manage social media’s to posting content, especially shorts and can place/adjust the format and pricing in any way you choose to sell to your audience and followers.

. Omeleto = A YouTube channel dedicated to showing sci-fi shorts from numerous filmmakers. They also get a major cut of the revenue when submitted, approved and uploaded onto their channel. They have a noticeably big and loyal amount of subscribers with consistently large amount of views per video.

. ALTAVOD = This is another VOD platform specifically catered to indie filmmakers to upload their films onto. This was also created by Robert Schwartzen (relative of Jason schwartzen, tali’s shire and Francis ford Coppola) and is primarily TVOD and is a standard 90/10 split between the filmmakers and the platform.

. Cubestream = Another quite recent platform for filmmakers to upload their content onto. The unique thing about this one is it’s based on the crypto blockchain system.

. Rumble = Ruble is an alternative to YouTube where creators can upload their content too besides just YouTube. It’s just gaining traction as more youth ears are also using the platform.

. GUDSHO = this is a relatively new platform that filmmakers can upload their shorts onto. It has a TVOD and SVOD system along with donations possible like Patreon.

. Shortfundly = An OTT marketplace platform based in India that you can upload your short film to. Its primarily AVOD based.

. Short film Gem = A new short film platform that runs on the trifecta of TVOD, SVOD and AVOD as sources of revenue. It's new but its getting traction to submit when you still can.

. Stock video websites: Depending on the nature of your short, you can either submit your whole short if its under a minute or edit and cut bite size chunks of your short film, then submit those clips onto various stock video sites for extra revenue for either commercial/editorial use. If your smart, you can even isolate and export some B-roll or BTS clips or even some 2nd unit backdrop clips as seperate videos to submit. Here are the well known primary stock video website i know and use;

Pep's media recommendations of the year!!

this list is based on media (video games, tv, web series) I've consumed this year and why I recommend them, spoiler free! Chances are you've seen me blog about them, so lets get into it!!

TWEWY: media type: Games | anime adaptation This video game is a story and battle game centered around one evolving mystery. Full of early 2000s slang, music, outfit choices, and much more, this game pushes the limits in its unique game mechanics and world lore. It's sequel NEO twewy came out just 2 years ago and follows its successor in its involvement of pop culture and new mechanics. This game deeply spoke to me and its story was one of the most interesting i've encountered this year. TWEWY shares the same origin on the ds and port to switch as Ghost Trick.

Trigun: media type: tv series | manga Trigun is a manga series that has now been adapted twice to tv, one an anime in the late 90s, and the other a 2023 anime that completely took over my life for months. Any fan of the series will tell you just how much this series digs into morals, complex characters, Christ allegories, transgenderism, and bodily autonomy. It is a tragic, funny, and deeply moving story about a far off world and future for humanity. You can experience the series in any order you like, but most hardcore fans will recommend the manga first.

The Murder of Sonic The Hedgehog: media type: video game As most of you know, I am an avid fan of Sonic. This silly little april fools game is one of the best characterized pieces of modern sonic media we've had in the peast 2 years maybe aside from the idw comics and frontiers - those of course taking their own styles of storytelling. I can't recommend this game enough to anyone who either barely knows sonic or is just getting into it, because it shows off some energy from the series I love. It's also a mystery game!

Lego Monkie Kid: media type: tv show Lego Monkie Kid is an extremely well animated and well written small kids series that is a modern continuation of the legend of Sun Wukong, the Monkey King from Journey To The West. It follows a spunky monster-of-the-week scenario for the first 2 seasons, and then splits off into season-long plots that involve a lot of hardcore character development and high stakes. If you're a fan of amazing visuals and superhero shows, this series is fantastic.

Bungou Stray Dogs: media type: manga | anime | novels | stage play adaptation | movie I've been into this series for a long time, and this year we got a lot more anime content for me to consume. Obviously this series is long stretching in terms of spin-off content and adaptations, but it's worth getting into if you're a fan of superpower content, detectives and mafia, and just generally insane hijinks. Go check it out!!

Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective: media type: video game I experienced Ghost Trick within the span of two days while staying at my friends house, and was practically speechless the entire time when not trying to get through trick parts. This game is the most interesting mystery games I've ever played. It has insanely interesting mechanics and great characters, as well as one of the most fun takes on a whodunnit ever. Anyone who has played this game knows that it reaches so deep into instant spoiler territory that it is impossible to talk about, so I just leave you with this: Go Play Ghost Trick.

Generation Loss: media type: web series - youtube and Twitch Genloss is streamer Ranboo's longtime project that he had been working on as long as I had been watching him. His passion for this comedy-horror series adapted to livestream is easily seen in how much work went into this series. Genloss takes inspiration from a sort of dystopian streaming-service view and old horror tropes, with references to the saw series apparent in the second episode. The many streamers that play characters in this series are fun to see put on the big screen outside of just playing games to their audiences. Ranboo has many more goals and installments for this series, and I can't wait to see what comes out of it.

Persona 5: media type: video game | anime adaptation | manga This game has been out for years but I finally just got into it!! You probably don't need me to tell you to play it, but I genuinely can't find anything in this series that would turn anyone away from playing it. It may be lengthy, but it keeps me engaged by constantly having something to do at all times. Of course, the music is BANGING.

Puss in Boots 2: media type: Movie One of my favorite movies of the year, Puss in boots is both well animated and well written. Continuing with the story of Puss from his own spin off from the Shrek series, this sequel takes a much darker note by having Puss fight for his life constantly, at the end of his 9 lives. It also features a bunch of different villains, antagonists, and other big bads. It's very worth the watch.

Spider-man into the Spiderverse: The Spiderverse series has had a knack for revitalizing the animation industry with new techniques and showing off new skills, and this movie is no outlier to that. Its full of great twists, amazing characters, music, animation, and writing. Full of a great mix of jokes and series moments, I was hooked and cannot wait for the next installment. Go check out this movie and its previous edition.

A YouTube & UMG AI Partnership and Music's Future

A few weeks ago, Youtube and Universal Music Group announced a partnership to develop AI tools that offer “safe, responsible and profitable” opportunities to music rights holders. AI is the newest threat to the recorded music industry’s business model which, over the past two decades, has been battered by music piracy sites like Napster and Spotify in its early days and the shift away from physical sales. By now, just about every music fan has already encountered an AI track. Back in April, “Heart on My Sleeve,” an AI Fake Drake/The Weeknd collaboration, went viral. Spotify, TikTok, Apple and YouTube removed the song after millions of streams, in large part because Universal Music Group, which operates as distributor and promoter for The Weeknd, pushed them to do so.

The music recording industry revolves around three companies – UMG, Warner Music Group, and Sony - who between them control about 60% of total revenue worldwide. But given that most people now stream their music rather than buy it directly, the “big three,” as they are known, need the cooperation of streaming companies to keep AI from jeopardizing their businesses. YouTube, which is the second largest audio streaming service in the US after Spotify, says it will work with UMG and its artists to develop tools that provide “appropriate protections and unlock opportunities for music partners.”

But Youtube and the other audio streamers have a tense relationship with the “big three,” since those companies control the licenses to most of the music we listen to. Spotify, for example, shells out roughly two-thirds of every dollar it collects to rights holders, which is probably the main reason Spotify has never generated a profit (see embedded video). Spotify’s new AI-generated DJ is now available in over 50 countries. What’s to prevent Spotify from bypassing flesh-and-blood artists and rights holders and using all of its meta-data to create its very own AI artists from scratch?

It’s far too soon to predict how AI will change the music business, but this does have the makings of another “Napster” moment or worse. (341)
