A kiss where it hurts
Tumblr media
Rating: 16+ (for implied naughty Dante)
Pairing: Dante X F!Reader
CW: blood, injury, Dante being a horn dog, medical inaccuracies
Word count: .6 K roughly
A/N: Dante gets hurt, and for the first time needs you to provide some doctoring
Tumblr media
“Ow”
“Well stop squirming and it wouldn't hurt so much.” Ignoring the pout on Dante's face as you focus on the final slash on his chest.
“Maybe if you were more gentle with that thing.” Huffing as his hands grip your hips a little tighter in response to the pain.
“Forceps, and if you had been willing to lay down I would have better control over what I'm doing.” Adjusting the frames of your lenses so the light above the telescopic lens shines right in the space between his split skin. “Seriously what made you think it was a good idea to slice off a demon's arm while it had its fingers in your chest?”
“You have terrible bedside manner you know.” Grousing at you before letting his head fall back onto the couch headrest. “I didn't think the damn thing would leave parts of itself behind in me.” For the first time since you met Dante the suave devil hunter needed actual medical assistance, stepping inside his office where you had been reading while waiting for him to get back from his most recent job. The dumbass had refused to lie down after you ran to get your travel kit and pulled a set of gloves on after washing your hands in his bathroom. So here you were with him sitting on his couch while you dug the talons from his chest while seated in his lap.
“I have great bedside manners, too bad this isn't a bed so you don't deserve any of it.” Leaning back to scowl at him. “Seriously, stop squirming. I can't get the last one if you keep moving and your body keeps trying to heal around the object.”
“It hurts! How would you feel if I was rooting around in your insides?” Biting his lip in annoyance as you shuffle your hips and roll your back before using your fingers to spread the wound open once more.
“Stop breathing for five seconds.” You order, using the brief pause in his chest expanding to finally catch the edge and carefully extract the foreign object from him. “Got it.” Turning your forceps with the light shining at the end of the tool as you inspect it to make sure part of it didn't break off inside of his chest. “For the record, technically you route around in my insides all the time.” Dropping the talon inside a small tray for disposal with the others. “Just that it's the fun parts.”
“Very funny Doc.” You can already see the difference as some of his coloring starts to come back and the brief pinch of his jaw disappears as the pain quickly fades.
“Want me to stitch these up?” It might be a wasted effort since the first one you removed is already starting to heal on its own as if it never existed in his pale skin.
“No, but I'll settle for a kiss to make it feel better.” Grinning like an idiot as he wiggles his eyebrows at you as if you hadn't noticed his other problem as you sat in his lap.
“Down boy.” Laughing a little as you pull off one glove and drop it into the same container before removing your glasses and killing the power to the light attached. It's awkward but you bend your back more to plant a quick kiss above the wounds. “Feel better?”
“No, but maybe you need to kiss lower, since that's not where it hurts.” You snort in response, then again you always knew kisses don't help make pain go away, but it's fun to pretend.

Remind me again, why is ~he~ here?!
Siege and Storm- Chapter 9
Tumblr media
It's not a team effort, Malyen. Army won't judge you as a couple.
Tumblr media
Macho lowly otkazat'sya doesn't get to strike (again).
Tumblr media
Please do!
Tumblr media
This would work as much more powerful statement, if Mal were genuinely concerned for Alina's well-being and her OWN choice, instead of being pissed he's the one, who called dibs on her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
*whispers* That's exactly what's he gonna do...
Tumblr media
For allowing you to keep breathing?!
Yeah, me too...
Tumblr media
There's nothing more pathetic than an insecure man shouting.
Perhaps maybe insecure man deciding for "their" woman.
A minute of silence for an alternative universe, where Nikolai isn't so unreasonably accommodating, and has actual guards stationed at door, so they rush in after hearing shouting. They see a deserter attacking their Tsarevich, so they step in...
Tumblr media
Is acting like a mindless animal supposed to make him look attractive?!
Tumblr media
HoW DaRe You fLiRt WiTh My aCcEsSoRy?!
Because seriously- what's his problem here?!
Tumblr media
Really?!
That's what's bothering you, Alina?!
I know Alina has some serious issues regarding self-worth, but I'd be more concerned about him acting as if she were his property, and anyone even suggesting she might have different role in the world deserves to be beaten by fists (because control is overrated and true men make a pub brawl out of anything)...
Tumblr media
You're supposed to sit by hearth and warm my soup!
Sorry Malaria, but Alina IS THE Sun Summoner, want it or not. You can't just keep ignoring it and hoping she'll just slip into your shadow AGAIN. ... wait... *war flashbacks from Cofton* At least not as long as there are people capable of finding her and dragging her back into the story.
Tumblr media
How can you be so SELFISH, Alina?! What about his soup?!
Just when the heroine moves to assume at least ~some~ responsibility (although for different reasons than you'd expect), she's promptly shamed for not thinking about Maaal for one (1) second... I love how he uses position of honour as an insult, because he's the one with full ownership of a public figure.
I know I'm apparently too demanding, but shouldn't he be overjoyed he didn't get shot on the spot yet? And no one seems too concerned about his desertion...
But hey- gf not discussing her decision to stop hiding from expectations placed upon her is obviously the more pressing matter.
Y'no. if his objection was that she completely forgot to negotiate change of his status in First Army with Nikolai (DESER*gunshot*), I'd cheer and fully support him, but his position in her love life and bedroom is apparently more pressing matter.
Also a huge fan of body language here.
What could crossed arms mean in body language? Rude, angry and insecure?! Sounds about right...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ordinary deserter ORDERS a Prince and Major of the very same Army he fled...?
Tumblr media
Yeah, Alina!
Mal wants his sickly housewife back!
Y'no, I wanted to note how quickly Malyen changed his mind about coming back, but then I re-read the end of previous book to be sure, and it's always been Alina. He wanted to get out, get rid of her amplifier and live his happy life in obscurity consequences be damned:
Tumblr media
Shadow and Bone- After
His girl refuses to get rid of all of the stuff that makes her different, so he just has to settle for her fancy clothes...
Tumblr media
Wow!
Supportive boyfriend here!
But hey- admitting she IS strong would mean giving up his dreams of watching her trudging after him.
He doesn't even have any idea what the Darkling can or cannot do! It's not some sort of professional opinion!
Tumblr media
This one's kinda funny in a way- Alina had very similar thought about him and volcra a chapter earlier...
Tumblr media
Siege and Storm- Chapter 8
Tumblr media
... ashamed ... given up EVERYTHING to be WITH ME ... Don't tell me, Malyen's so blind he never notices what his (rather pointed) remarks do to Alina?!
I thought we both wanted to help Ravka.
No, Alina. He never did. We've been both wrong. He cares only about himself and his ownership of a small, inconsequential you.
This could offer an interesting view into a mind of a soldier so alienated from his country that offers him zero promises for the future, he cares for nothing... if he weren't such an inconsiderate dick to Alina...
Tumblr media
Love this aspect of their relationship! SO empowering!
Like... He'd need to be extremely dull, if I wanted to interpret this as anything but clear fucking MANIPULATION. This is psychological blackmailing 101!
And he's supposed to be the supportive boyfriend SOMEHOW...

i saw this post today where this person was talking abt fandom racism and was pointing out some real issues within my fandom and favorite ship that I too had noticed… but then kept bringing it back to the lack of one particular other ship they liked, when it's like, no that's not the problem, and that ship is unpopular because those characters have zero romantic or sexual chemistry and barely any scenes together. (it was really funny that someone had reblogged this to take their 'lack of seeing this one character in a sexual way in fic miiight be racist' complaint to be like 'i think you're right! we should have more fic about [a long list of different ships involving that character with people they have ACTUAL chemistry with].' it was really funny. ofc op totally missed the point they were making there.) anyway i just feel like way too many useful conversations about this stuff are ruined by people making it about shipping or other really subjective fandom preferences. i get that this is because something like 'number of fics X ship or character has on ao3' is an objective measure, and something like 'level of orientalism in how a lot of people are writing this desi character' is not, but i wish people would realize it tends to alienate more people that it converts. and ime, it's often the people who maybe would most benefit from hearing those criticisms (e.g. are writing unintentionally racist stuff in their works, and are someone who would want to know about that and how to do it differently) who tune it out the second you make it into insulting their shipping preferences.
i mean, there WAS some real racism in the star wars sequels fandom, including among the fanfic/shipping side. not just the shitty dudes harassing kelly marie tran. we saw the really bizarre 'predator' language people directed at john boyega just for making some joke posts on instagram about disliking reylo and its shippers. it was the very classic racist thing where people see something as automatically more threatening when a black man does it. ....but how many people had already tuned all that out because the people most outspoken about the racism in the fandom kept reducing it to 'if you ship reylo over finnrey, or kylux over finnpoe, you're a racist'? it's like a boy who cried wolf thing. if you've shown that you can't uncouple serious discussions and concerns from just being pissy that your otp is not more popular, people are going to see you as someone who can't be taken seriously and then ignore you when you do have a real complaint. it's like how i'm sure that some of stitch's essays are thoughtful and important, but i have no desire to read stuff by someone who is infamous for harassing people just for what they ship. i don't feel like i can take any of that person's judgments about fandoms i'm not in, for instance, seriously.
that's not to say fandom preferences in shipping can't ever be influenced by racism (or other 'isms') but is it ever really *that* specifically that is the problem, or the broader pattern it is part of? and i feel like 'maybe fandom is a little too focused on het and slash ships between two young skinny conventionally attractive white people' is a message more people are open to than 'your specific white M/M or F/M otp is racist'
anyway it reminds me of the stuff i've seen sometimes in academic fandom studies about how you can't really honestly study a fandom where you're deeply mired in its discourse - you need to focus your work on fandoms that you're familiar with but not in that way. and i think that maybe also applies to some of these discussions about fandom racism and misogyny. maybe you're just going to have better takes on something when you're not deeply invested in other unrelated arguments about it, like about which ship is the most popular. like i could not care less about star wars shipping and have zero take in reylo vs. finnrey, so that's why i feel like i could trust my perception that the way a small minority of reylos were posting about john boyega's instagram posts was racist. it didn't matter if he was genuinely being a jerk to them or about their ship. he obviously wasn't a 'predator' and it was pretty telling language for a group of largely white people to use about a black man making fun of their ship on a different social media site.
--
The laying pipe thing was blown so out of proportion, yes. Call it sexist, sure, but it wasn't fucking predatory.

I’ll never get over how Twisted is so good at setting something up comedically and then using it dramatically. The Sultan’s… ah, infertility problem is the obvious example, but there are more.
Like how the people of the kingdom hate Ja’far and blame him for all their troubles despite him being nothing but polite and affable and having devoted his life to helping them. This is presented as funny, with the contrast between his unfailing courtesy and the sheer intensity and illogicality of their vitriol, from the very first moments of the show: “And all the grateful citizens will say to me -” (to a cheerful tune echoing “Belle”) “Fuck you!” “Fuck you!” etc..
But then we see him prepared to destroy whatever’s left of his reputation beyond repair in order to rise up from his lowest point and save everyone. He asks himself with tears in his eyes, “Who cares if no one will ever mourn me?” And we have to process that he has no friends; hasn’t for possibly well over a decade; has instead been relentlessly bullied and slandered for years on end; and is completely resigned to dying alone, forever condemned for crimes he didn’t commit and not even posthumously receiving any of the gratitude, respect or love he deserves. Which really isn’t funny at all. It’s just tragic. And to further taint those earlier scenes, the flashback sequence has revealed that he used to be popular because of his compassion and sense of justice, and calling everyone he meets “friend” is a now-incongruous holdover from that happier time.
Or Aladdin being a serial sexual predator of teenagers. His extreme libido and misogyny are established early on. We learn that he has sexual relationships with much younger women and girls very frequently, manipulating and isolating them, viewing them as disposable objects for his own pleasure and callously abandoning them once he’s satisfied. Yet despite how inherently horrifying that is, he’s so stupidly overconfident, shamelessly sleazy and simply fun to watch that he’s overall a lighthearted villain for a predominantly lighthearted show. It’s impossible to take sexual advances like “Hey babe, it’s such a beautiful night - take off your clothes” seriously. From admonishments (“‘Cause you stole my daughter’s hymen”) to warnings (“A song is a dick in sheep’s clothing!”), this subject is a source of far more comedy than drama on the whole.
But then he says coldly, “I’m a thief; I take what I want” and restrains the sixteen-year-old Princess by force holding a knife. That’s a rape threat. This is a serial rapist. Holy shit, I’ve been laughing at a serial rapist seducing a child.
And of course, there’s “Why did my Mummy have to die?” “Mine too!” “Mine too!” “Mine too!” “Mine too!” “Mine too!” as a crack at Disney’s trend of dead parents, followed by the genuinely emotional revelation that one of the main characters, a parody Disney princess, has a dead mother.
You know? I just think it’s cool, and a very good way to balance and progress the tone. There isn’t a clear delineation between funny stuff and serious stuff, just different lenses on the same ideas, characters and themes. Some stories have designated comic relief characters that disappear or take a backseat for dramatic moments, but in Starkid shows everyone can be comic and dramatic when it’s appropriate.

Galactik Football season 3 rewatch, eps 25 - 26
The final let's go!
Episode 25:
Tumblr media
Mei has a plushy awwww
Announcer: And now, here are Callie, Nork and Barry! Artegor: And Artegor ☝.
LOL he says it so calmly. The disrespect tho
Sonny: Still looking for the multi-flux bomb. Clamp: Let's just hope they find it in time. Otherwise Akillian will share the same fate as the Shadows planet in the last GFC. And the Breath could disappear, definitely not what we need right now
Yes Clamp, the Breath disappearing is the main concern if there is a big explosion on your planet
Remind me again why Sonny and the gang don't run over to Akillian to find the bomb? Or why no one alerts Akillian authorities at all? Shouldn't we get SOMEONE other than Aarch and Norata to look for it?
Aww Tia getting Mark to open up, she's such a good captain and friend to everyone <3 She's come far from her more distant self at the very beginning
Mark: Thanks Tia, maybe you're right. It must be my imagination!
Mark how on earth did you come to that conclusion from what Tia just said
So on Sinedd's integration in the team...
While everyone else, even D'jok, seem to have accepted Sinedd back well enough, Mice still hates him and literally gags at the idea of him being on the team. I kind of wish his objection was taken more seriously in the writing – the narrative acts as if D'jok is the main person that has to settle his scores with Sinedd, but forgets that Micro-Ice was Sinedd's main target for years, and according to that flashback, they used to be a trio (although from the flashback you could also say Sinedd didn't care for him back then either lol). His reaction is pretty understandable and although he should still be keeping it professional, they shouldn't really expect him to forgive him. That dynamic could have been interesting, but we never get a confrontation or any closure between the two because Micro-Ice as a character is just there to be laughed at this season.
When Maya calls D'jok she kind of makes it sound like they should accept Sinedd because he's had it hard, which I'm not a huge fan of. First of all because in this season they had her act more as a guardian to Sinedd than D'jok, who also lost himself down the wrong path for a while there, but also because I think the reasoning for accepting him should be that he has swallowed his pride and is genuinely trying to be a better person. Otherwise it sounds a bit like “having a sob story is a justification for acting out”. I know that wasn't the intention, but still, it's in the details.
But Maya is right that D'jok and Sinedd are parallels of each other. Both grew up without their biological parents, both are extremely competitive and put huge importance on their ambitions and success, both are prone to lashing out at others when distressed. But D'jok was luckier and had an adoptive mother, and ended up with good friends who could keep him in check. They turned out differently due to different upbringing but both made mistakes and hurt others – D'jok knows this so is more humble and doesn't give Sinedd a hard time. Sinedd also saved his life, so there's that too.
Rocket: Even if D'jok and Sinedd are rivals, they're still like brothers.
UMMMMMMMMM that's taking it too far. Sinedd running off to the Shadows wasn't what put them against each other, neither was the fact he dated Mei. He was already being unpleasant all the time in season 1 and it was implied it has been that way for a long time. D'jok didn't show any regret or whatever in season 1 - he had no problem responding to Sinedd's provocations with taunts about him not having friends LOL. If they were like brothers, it was way too long ago for Rocket to be making that comment
When bro grabs your wrist instead of giving you a normal handshake #nohomo
Anyway I like this convo between D'jok and Sinedd and how it ends, for all the reasons that they're parallels as I mentioned above. But the first few lines are a bit funny because D'jok actually HASN'T been fighting him lately, it sounds as if they're making up after fighting about Mei but that's... not really what's been happening? But moving on, this is functionally an apology from Sinedd, but again he should apologise to Mice too.
Also with Sinedd saying he wants to be a good person now so his family can be proud of him... ehhhh I still think his development should have started earlier. His whole problem was that his response to growing up without family was to put others down – so the solution is to... give him a family so he'll stop doing that? I'm simplifying it but I just think it would be more impactful if he tried to turn things around before meeting his actual parents. Sure, they can still be a motivation and encourage him, but yeah.
I mean it still works with him finding his parents, realising that love and affection was all he wanted and that he was wrong to take it out on others... but at least bring the parents in earlier in the season because as it is, it's just too rushed. Honestly you could just get rid of the fake parents storyline – it was done so we can see Sinedd at his low point, but you could already have him like that after the events of season 2. It would feel like a natural continuation and you can bring the real parents in earlier.
Last note: MAN does the voice acting suck here lol
SDJHSDFHJSDF AARCH AND NORATA ON THE SNOWMOBILE I LOVE OLDER MEN ACTION
Norata, watching Rocket use the jet ski is not the same as knowing how to use the jet ski. Wait why does Aarch call it a jet ski, it's a snowmobile. A jet ski is on water lmao – his mind is still in Paradisia. I get it, Aarch, I get it
Aw Dame Simbai stepping in to do the speech giving now that Aarch is gone, it's nice to see how much she cares about this team succeeding too. But a bit hyperbolic to say this is the most important match of their lives, as opposed to the other finals :P
Technoid's security is on maximum alert? So barely functioning then
Nikki-4's voice is so surly I love it lol
I was complaining about Aarch leaving the team but him getting to have galaxy-saving shenanigans with Norata? Iconic actually
Aarch: Holy ice age!
Ah so there's our expletive stand-in
Damn that was an intense face-off, Nikki-4 is so strong
Tia earlier this episode: Don't worry Mark you won't have to face off against Nina -> FAST FORWARD OOPS
GO MARK!
Why is there a cloud of dust every time someone gets thrown to the floor, do y'all not clean it
Why is confetti already flying? Must be reused footage.
Tumblr media
Tia telling Ahito to pay attention but this goal? That didn't happen because he woke up too late lol, defence should have been helping more
Ayo why do other goalies not have protective gloves like Ahito? I guess most aliens can take it
In hindsight they should have really predicted there would be some sort of security around the bomb
I just wanna showcase this comment and all it implies:
Tumblr media
Episode 26:
Oooo Aarch and Norata are using the Breath to fight this robot, I wonder if this will have consequences. Perhaps they would have shown it in season 4?
Yaaay Micro-Ice with the sick dribbling!
Tumblr media
SDFJKDFSJK THEY'RE JUST CHILLING THERE LIKE THEY'RE IN A LOONEY TUNES CARTOON
Aarch pressing the big red button before Norata that's SUCH a sibling moment, reminds me of when my brother and I would fight to push the button for the lift
The players have been using the flux more externally lately, like shooting it at the ball instead of just using it to power themselves up. I feel like this has been happening more since the Paradisia final where they had to use flux to evacuate the planet, which makes sense
Bennett: Someone has activated the bomb, it's going to explode any second! Sonny: Did you hear him? Get out of there, now! Aarch: We're not going anywhere! Meanwhile, Norata: 🏃‍♂️💨💨💨
Honestly what a comedic duo I'm enjoying this
The solution is to just yeet the bomb into space ahhahahahha I know the Breath makes them strong, but THAT strong?
It's so funny how due to losing the Breath, Sinedd is just free-falling for like 100m but it cuts away to show the other players losing their flux LOL. RIP Sinedd, what a way to go.
Kind of interesting that compared to the Shadows last season, who physically didn't seem affected by the loss of flux (they just suddenly sucked at football. love that match), the Akillians are immediately drained physically and wiping out.
Wait..... being tired out.......... is Ahito gonna restore their flux because he's been storing it inside him?
Omg yes he is
Woahh!! He not only drew the Breath back to the Snow Kids, but pulled in so much it manifested in all flux holders around him! Ahito so powerful they had to nerf him with the narcolepsy
Sonja has the Breath! Wait so even before the glaciation and the ban on flux, only certain people could manifest it? Interesting
Maybe one day Sonny can just watch his son play in the GFC final without having to save the galaxy at the exact same time, but until then it's business as usual
Is it just me or does the Breath look like a deeper shade of blue sometimes in this season
Artegor: And he passes to Tia, who takes flight!
Yeaaaaahhh angel Tia imagery again
Y'know considering how much time D'jok spent with team Paradisia I feel like they should have had more moments of rivalry in this match but hey ho
Tumblr media
I know it's just animation reuse but Sinedd scoring the final goal with the exact same move D'jok scored his first epic goal with is pretty poetic. And of course Sinedd generally being the one to score that point (but still, couldn't we get some new animation for the winning goal?)
The way they animate Harris really looks like they wanted him to be like the Joker
Mark jumping up to save Nina from falling – oh so NOW falling from a great height can kill them! Honestly there have probably been fatalities in this sport
Awww Tia getting them to all hold the cup, that's so sweet. I love her
Tumblr media
Iconic last shot, I'm not crying you're crying ;v;
Yes one last Mice delight advert is exactly what this season needed in its finale /s
So looks like Mei and Sinedd are going ahead as a couple
They really settled the Team Paradisia stuff with one sentence about them being taken care of by Chief Maddox huh. I suppose they were gonna put the Mark x Nina resolution in season 4? Idk, Team Paradisia deserved better
So Aarch is back to coaching, but for Club Galactik right? Makes sense, he still wants the job but this will be less intensive and will allow him more time to settle down with Adim and their future child. The Snow Kids will be just fine on their own. Well, when it comes to football anyway. Can't make any promises about Pirate-related adventures :P
Aaaaaand there it is... ok I always knew this was coming even when I watched the show for the first time, but it must have been so insane to watch back when it first aired. Like, everything is calmly wrapping up and then SUDDENLY the holo-trainer goes weird and the kids disappear with Mei and Micro-Ice. We linger on this for a few seconds aaaaaand.... THAT'S IT! END OF SEASON! I would have gone apeshit too
This is like a transporter malfunction from Star Trek lol, although I'm wondering how that can even happen, like does the holo-trainer actually teleport people then? Anyway I honestly don't care THAT much about the ending if I'm honest, like I get that it was a last ditch effort to get the show renewed as the higher ups obviously didn't have much faith in it with that budget slash, so I can easily just pretend those last few seconds didn't happen and it ended with the Snow Kids happily going into the holo-trainer to help teach the next generation. It's not great, but it doesn't really ruin the season for me
Soooooooooo uuuuuuhhhh.... that was it! Yeeeah I'm not a huge fan of this season, but I don't hate it with a burning passion. Except at certain points. As a whole it's more,, disappointment for what could have been. I think I'm glad we have it, because it really is jam packed with interesting concepts and I think if the writing were better, it genuinely could have been the best season. The previous seasons certainly aren't ATLA-levels of writing either but the main emotional beats worked well, whereas here it's a lot more all over the place.
Generally I feel like the team behind this season had the ambition and the vision, I mean we have Sinedd redeeming himself, a multi-flux tournament, a non-Akillian joining the team, players leaving for other teams, Aarch deciding to retire and the Snow Kids being experienced and mature enough to handle that, a "main" couple not staying together since they were teenagers... all interesting things! It's not a soulless production that doesn't try to change the status quo, but I think they just didn't manage to pull it together. There was a LOT going on with a lot of characters but ultimately there wasn't enough time for the development to feel natural and stick.
Outside of that, some characters were flanderised, yeah. Looking at you, Micro-Ice. Wait, they never even finished that plotline about him, Yuki and Zo-leen! Wtf! On the other hand, I was pleasantly surprised at how some characters were handled, like Mei. It would have been so easy to villainise her but they treated her with respect, which was cool. As for the other Snow Kids, a lot of it was just romance drama shoehorned in, which gets boring when the supporting cast don't have anything else going on.
Production-wise, they did the best with the budget they got but yeah it does suck because the matches with all the cool moves were one of the selling points of the series. But here most of the games just felt like "A, B and C needs to happen, and for the rest let's just throw in some filler moves". Direction is not just down to the animation itself - types of shots, camera movement, transitions, music... all these little details were lacking so the matches ended up being kinda bland in comparison to the previous seasons. There were some creative additions though, like the Elektra's flux.
I think I've already expressed my thoughts on everything else during the commentaries, so yeah it's been fun! Hope they've been fun to read ^^

The Problem With Animated Shows Today
Tumblr media
I shouldn't have to make a post like this because I know there's so much more animated content now than there was when I was a kid. Yet for the better part of a year, I've sat through one abysmal failure of a cartoon after the other, and I just can't stand it anymore. I'm aware the title might come off as pretentious, but rest assured I'm not a pretentious person nor to I view this post as objective fact. I'm just here expressing the common problems I have with cartoons recently and what I feel are the best steps to avoid them.
Tumblr media
A common problem I have with cartoons recently is the awful writing on display. Shows like Samurai Rabbit, Hamster & Gretel, Ollie's Pack, and Mech Cadets all have writing that at best very underwhelming and at worst inexcusably amateurish. Scenes would go on for minutes at a time delivering boring exposition, unfunny gags, and very unnatural dialogue. It very much feels like the creators don't understand the value of basic writing principles such as "show, don't tell" "less is more" or "do much, speak little." Rather, they often go through the motions of a typical show so they can meet the given runtine and stay underbudget. For example, an episode of Centaurworld is around 26 minutes, which should be more than enough time to develop the characters, explore the world, have a good amount of funny moments and intense action scenes. What they choose to spend that runtime on instead is one note characters standing around arguing with one another, exposition dump upon exposition dump, unfunny gags, and underwhelming at best action scenes. This in turn makes the premise of the show feel wasted, like the creators only gave a successful pitch just to make something digestible to put bread on the table.
Tumblr media
It really does feel like characters in cartoons these days are one of 2 archetypes: the annoying chatterbox and the moronic dirtbag. Let's compare 2 characters that have the same idea but vastly different executions: Eddy from Ed, Edd, n Eddy, and Ollie from Ollie's Pack. Both are outcasts who aren't good role models, but we're supposed to find them entertaining and funny. Despite those similarities, Eddy is clearly the superior character in this scenario because he often gets his comeuppance for almost immediately, and he actually does care for his friends. Ollie, in contrast, is just a selfish brat who sees his friends as expendable and doesn't get his comeuppance as quickly. Not only are the main characters detestable and annoying, but the supporting cast isn't much better as often they're either underdeveloped and unfunny or they're just parrots that always share the same thoughts as the main character. And don't even get me started on how incompetent, pathetic, and annoying the show's villains can get. Seriously, I defy anyone to make a good case for characters like Lloyd Garmadon, Jamack, the Yokai from Samurai Rabbit, or any of the villains from Hamster & Gretel.
Tumblr media
An important aspect of animation that not many people bring up in conversation is voice acting. Voice actors are essential in giving life to characters in animation as they're able to make them sound believable and authentic. Or at least, that's what good voice acting should be. So many of the animated shows I've watched have such underwhelming or otherwise terrible voice acting that make the characters sound fake and kill my suspension of disbelief. Some of the worst vocal performances I've heard in recent memory come from Chris Houghton as Cricket Green, Meli Povenmire as Gretel Gomez, Allyn Rachel as Bee, and Danny Pudi as Tiny. They all have very terrible range, no sense of urgency in their tones, and don't sound the least bit believable as their characters. It's also frustrating to hear veteran actors give lackluster performances such as Aulil'i Carvalho as Hailey Banks, Chris Diantamopoulos as Thunder, and Karen Fukahara as Kipo. It's not entirely the fault of the actors for giving lackluster performances, as often they're at the mercy of bad voice direction who doesn't do a good job bringing out the best in their actors.
Tumblr media
It's a given that animation on television has more limitations than big budget animated films. The best animated TV shows ever made, though, are able to work around those limitations and provide some excellent visuals that make the world feel alive. Recently though, I've notice a common problem when it comes to the animation in shows like Mech Cadets, Super Giant Robot Brothers, Daniel Spellbound, Hailey's On It, Bee and PuppyCat and My Dad The Bounty Hunter. All of them look good from a design standpoint, but in actual animation, they look choppy and stiff. This is because these shows have bad animation direction. Most people don't think about animation direction when watching a cartoon, but we can definitely tell when animation looks good versus when it looks bad. Bad animation is not just what's being shown on screen but also how it's being presented. In Mech Cadets, a character is giving a backstory to another character in a dark control room, and the camera moves around the room, showing the walls while the character talks. This is beyond inexcusable as it showcases the lack of appreciation for visual storytelling and is a complete waste of resources. Other aspects of bad animation include choppy character movements, a lack of mass on the character models, disorienting cinematography, and poor use of lighting and shading.
Tumblr media
What can be done to avoid these shortcomings? Well, it starts by having good scripts that value showing over telling. I can't recommend Pixar's 22 Rules of Storytelling enough for aspiring writers who want to make the best scrips they can. I also think having your characters be likable and well-rounded will help a ton, especially if they're in a show about good triumphing evil. Having good actors is one thing, but it's equally important to have a very good voice director with years of experience bringing out the best in voice actors. Finally, collaborating with a skilled animation director or a very well established animation studio would do wonders. And don't be afraid to speak up and communicate with the producers on how to make the show bettee while staying within the budget. Animation is a collaborative medium and animated series today should do a better job reflecting that.

I have posted about this multiple times before but since tumblr's search won't cough any of it up, I'm just going to say it again so I can add my new thing to my thought process about trigger warnings:
Years ago a popular true crime blogger posted an ask from someone requesting that she tag for needles. I think she had posted that notorious x-ray of masochistic serial murderer Albert Fish's colon, which is admittedly disturbing, but she very politely declined on the basis that everything she posts tends to be violent and disturbing--you actually SHOULD find her blog upsetting--and users should manage their expectations around that general premise. Additionally, needles do not carry the specific traumatic weight of something like, say, racial violence or child abuse, for which a warning could be in order; needles are everyday objects that one might reasonably encounter in a store or a person's home, or practically anywhere. If you have such an aversion that it really affects your life to see a needle, you might want to pursue treatment and stop using a part of the internet that is essentially a giant random image generator.
Tumblr media
My personal take on content/trigger warnings (are those different? If not then why do we have varying tags instead of one universal one to keep the system reliable?) is similar, that they're only important for material that could seriously upend someone's day. Is Thing X something you truly could not have expected where you encountered it? Would you need to leave work or school if you saw Thing X? Would you need to seek assistance or take a medication? Does Thing X cause significant social problems or affect your sense of safety? If not, you don't need a warning. I mean everyone can tag whatever they choose and of course some folks are happy to tag stuff just because someone might find it annoying or unpleasant, but you're not entitled to protection from strangers just to spare you casual discomfort.
Tumblr media
One day I got this extremely angry anonymous message in all caps yelling at me for not tagging spiders. I had no idea what the person was talking about, but after a while I realized it had to be about a popular post I'd made years ago showing tarantulas in a Kids In the Hall sketch. This was especially funny to me because at the time I was posting a lot of explicit violence and sexual imagery that someone could reasonably object to, but this person felt that it was my job to help create the illusion of a spiderless world for their benefit. I know arachnaphobia is a real thing but I still think that if you suffer from it then it's your job to look after yourself and not everybody else's job to protect you from remembering that there are spiders.
This is kind of a tangent but I often think about how trypophobia is not technically a phobia because it isn't affecting anybody's ability to lead a normal daily existence. It's just a grossout thing, basically a matter of taste, but people love to try to elevate it to the level of a serious psychological vulnerability for some reason.
Tumblr media
I'm thinking about this stuff (again) today because I just saw a post on one of the autism subreddits where someone linked to a scientific paper to answer a specific question, but they said it needed warnings for incidental use of the term "high-functioning" and advised that some people may not wish to read the paper at all so they wouldn't be triggered by it. That term is sometimes used to invalidate or deny care to people who give the outward appearance of less urgent needs, so it is indeed pretty tricky and needs work. But change is only going to come from attention; if you are concerned about the effects of that language then I think it behooves you to know how it is being used so you are able to argue about it and lobby for change. It's hard for me (a "high-functioning" person) to imagine a scenario in which I'm interested in reading about a condition I have, and then I refuse to do so because the phrase "high-functioning" is going to trigger a psychiatric episode so bad that it's better for me to just ignore information about my own health. I think an adult who is usually inclined to educate themselves should be able to handle occasionally seeing troublesome or outdated language.
Tumblr media
Put more concisely than above, my criteria for warnings is just: when the questionable item relates to a real, reasonably common traumatic experience that would be unfair to spring on someone who could relate to it, and/or when the content would be legitimately surprising in its context. Like if you're in my corner of tumblr you should expect that you're going to see horror movie stuff, I'm not tagging anything like that unless it's miles over the line I typically draw. But on the other hand I was out at a restaurant one night and this spoiled egomaniac was practically shouting for a long time in graphic detail about episiotomies within earshot of everyone who was trying to eat. Honestly one of the staff should have told her to shut the fuck up. That's not a thing that people should be normally expected to put up with in a public dining situation, even though it regards a medical procedure that is not morally offensive.
It's probably obvious by now that I think that being uncomfortable and even offended, at least to some degree, has an important psychological and social function. It enables you to recognize and react to problems around you. Understanding what makes you uncomfortable is critical; dealing with discomfort builds character; and continuously avoiding everything you don't like keeps you infantile. It's actually not good to live in a world of only your favorite things.

the lighthouse
speaking of weirdo black and white movies, i have a very soft spot in my heart for robert eggers' the lighthouse.
Tumblr media
i'm not much of an eggers fan — i thought the vvitch was underwhelming and pretentious, and i haven't seen his hamlet reimagining — but man the lighthouse hits such a weird, goofy pitch that it's impossible for me not to love. two deeply weird actors in a homoerotic love triangle with a fresnel lens, it's a ghost story, a bar yarn, an arthouse freakout, a dark(ish?) comedy, it's slow and strange and also very funny. it's about gender and beans, and it's, just, gorgeously lit, a modern day movie that *understands how to light for black and white* with DARK shadows and BLINDING light.
it's impossible to take seriously, and that's key, i think—the problem i had with the vvitch was that it was so deeply serious about something intrinsically goofy, and lighthouse just commits so fully to the bit that it actually ends up feeling more substantial because it isn't trying to convince you of its historical bonafides at all. there's a fight scene where robert pattinson envisions willem dafoe as a woman he's fucking, then as a scabrous and barnacled neptune who is tentacle fucking HIM, and in the meantime in what you could call objective reality he's beating dafoe to death. it's closer to body horror than anything else, tonally, even if nothing really happens to the external bodies of the characters; but it's got that same unreliable and erotic energy, particularly with the eroticism of the inhuman and inanimate. lots of fun

I will NEVER get over how Adult Swim mistreated Moral Orel. All because the show treated serious topics with the seriousness they deserve instead of just passing them off ass jokes that provide zero commentary on the world.
From the start, the show was obviously a commentary on Christianity, generational trauma, and religious trauma. It handled it in a satirical manner, of course, but it understood the issues it showed us, making a lot of it rather tasteful and relatable.
“Make it deeper and more fucked up!” They told the writers, after the first season had an episode where the joke was that a child impregnates the women of his town against their will due to a little misunderstanding.
And they did, giving us an episode in the last season that, in a way, is very similar to the infamous baby batter episode. A commentary on sexual assault and how women, the most common victims of such a crime, handle the problem. A woman desiring the touch of her rapist, a woman age regressing due to assault from a young age, and a woman with an odd obsession with eggs and purity due to abusive mutilation done by her mother.
Alone was an episode that didn’t just speak to me, but screamed. Never before had I seen these issues be shown in such a way in media. Especially the parts with Nurse Bendy and Miss Sculptham.
As a victim myself, I felt seen by this supposedly silly adult animated show. The feelings of desiring an innocent family, to no longer be treated as just a sexual object. The struggle of desiring the touch and abuse from the one that hurt you in one of the worse ways imaginable.
I cannot stress how important that is to have in media, to have these issues carefully handled to tell the story of victims that so many turn their eyes away from. It’s the disgusting truth of life, the disgusting truth of what so many women are forced to experience.
But it wasn’t funny.
It didn’t turn these women and their traumas into a punchline.
You couldn’t just laugh and continue to never look into the reality it satirized like in earlier episodes.
Adult Swim clearly did not like that.
Rape, being treated like a joke in that episode from the first season, wasn’t too deep or fucked up according to Adult Swim. But once they were forced to look that reality in the eye, to see truth and to question their own views, it was “too much.” Rape and abuse are only acceptable when you’re just making fun of it and the victims.
Moral Orel deserved to be a long story that delved into all the disturbing things society wants to ignore. Adult animation deserves to be a medium for more than just rape jokes and cursing.
Fuck Adult Swim.

Vicarious (Part 1)
Summary: Sokka wants nothing more than to get his life back. Azula is desperate to escape her own life and reluctant to let go of one that she finds significantly easier to handle.
Notes: This is going to be the long fic version of When You Were Me; https://archiveofourown.org/works/34538767
When did his biceps get so big?
He strokes his chin. Certainly he isn’t complaining but he doesn’t remember being so muscular. He supposes that he has been doing his share of training he just hadn’t realized that it has been paying off so splendidly. His face is well chiseled and his beard is coming in quite nicely.
He quirks a brow, he doesn’t understand why he can’t quite seem to keep a lady.
It certainly isn’t his looks.
He likes to think that he is funny and generally nice.
Maybe he doesn’t take things seriously enough? Maybe he isn’t as nice as he thinks he is?
He looks back to himself. Appearance definitely isn’t the problem.
It has to be that he doesn’t take things seriously enough. He thinks that Suki might have mentioned that once or twice. Katara certainly has.
Sometimes it is hard to look at Katara who is so happy with Aang. And Zuko who likes to reach for Mai’s hand and give her quick pecks. Even Toph has found herself a cozy place in Teo’s lap. Most of all it hurts to see Suki so freshly moved on with TyLee.
She smiles so much more now that she is with TyLee. And suddenly things don’t add up again; TyLee doesn’t take things seriously either. If anything TyLee is more bubbly and more prone to avoiding serious conversation.
Maybe Suki had always just liked women. But no, she has made it very clear that she’ll take anyone that she thinks that she connects with.
That isn’t him anymore.
That isn’t him for anyone. Not in the long term.
Sometimes he feel used. He has a few dinners with them, they take things further, and then they leave him. Maybe is just another pretty face and that’s it. Just like Chan and Jet. He gave both of them a try to, just to see if he’d have better luck with men. Of course, Jet was a mistake, he should have known that going in. The two have always hated each other. Chan is a good looking man objectively but Sokka couldn’t seem to pick out a single distinguishing personality trait aside from how much the man talked about his pecs.
At any rate, Sokka is growing tired of trying. Gran Gran–who is very happy with Pakku–had once told Katara that love happens naturally. It can’t be forced.
Maybe that is his problem; he is trying too hard and everyone knows it. The universe itself knows it. And so things are just awkward.
Sometimes, when everyone is on their dates and holding hands, Sokka gets lonely. Even though they all talk to him so much. He is so very lonely.
.oOo.
She tries not to stare at herself for too long because then she will begin to hate herself. At first glance there is elegance and poise. She has a pretty face and a slender body. Her hair and clothes are still tousled from sleep. It should have been combed upon waking. She has stared long enough for confidence to dip into a notion that she could benefit from applying more makeup. And if she stares longer…
She averts her gaze.
But it drifts back.
She can’t help it.
Not when things are so strange that she forgets to question it.
She has now stared long enough to decide that she should probably stop skipping her firebending routine. Long enough to decide that her face is quite plain, nothing to boast about. Long enough to decide that she isn’t good enough for herself.
It would be nice to wake up one day and not have to see her own face for a change. To not have to wake up knowing that she has another day of problems in front of her. The same ones that never seem to get resolved.
Azula has grown to hate mirrors and what they do to her. But she is drawn to them. Or drawn to the misery.
Maybe she hopes that one day, if she can make herself sad enough, people will take notice. Maybe they will reach out to her.
She backs herself away from the mirror and that face that she has grown to hate so much. The face that isn’t good enough. That person who hasn’t been good enough for quite some time now. Not since they locked her away.
Now she likes to lock herself away.
It is easier when she doesn’t have to talk to people.
It is easier when she can observe from a distance–usually from the window. Having just finished a council meeting, one that she had been invited to as well, Zuzu and his new friends–and her old friends–have taken to having a little garden picnic that she was not invited to.
That is fair enough, she tends to make things tense and weird just by sitting silent. Perhaps her silence is what makes the energy so stiff.
She supposes that she could go down there and join them; they never invited her but they also never mentioned that she had to stay away. Not that she can’t take a hint.
She could go downstairs and have herself a spa day, she could go for a walk if she wishes to be flanked by guards, she could practice her firebending or read some scrolls.
Instead Azula finds her way back to her bed and lays down.
This is quickly becoming her favorite pastime now that most things seem pointless; tireless firebending and brushing up on history and war strategies have gotten her nowhere at all, walking is tiresome when she has nowhere to be, and what is the point of getting all pretty and smelling nice when she has nowhere to be?
There is no one to please and she has long since stopped trying to impress herself.
It’s all a lie anyways; her whole life, her supposed destiny for glory. She is a sham and a fraud. And one day she will get the courage to do what she needs to do–to lay down in this bed and just keep laying there and laying there until they find her cold and finally at peace.
An alternative would be nice. Perhaps to wake up with a new face and a new life somewhere very far off. One where she would never have to see her own face in the mirror again.
In such a case Azula wouldn’t have to die but she wouldn’t exactly exist either. And that is just fine by her.
It is probably just fine by everyone else too.
Yes.
She decides that tomorrow will be the day. She has to prepare a few things first.

barbie movie rewrite because it was okay but i know how it couldve been better
ya so i've only watched the movie once and actively as i was watching it i was thinking of ways to rework the plot.. and i wrote none of it down after i saw it. but i like this website and i should post here more so here's my nonsense thoughts :)
so couple of main changes need to take place for this movie to work as a proper feminist movie in my opinion. making it perfect or overly nuanced isn't my idea of fixing it; I would much rather improve the fundamental message and conclusion so it isn't a specifically flawed intro to feminism because that is a really valuable thing for movie's in this climate to be.
change 1: alan deserved better!
one of the biggest philosophy's of feminism i believe in is intersectionality. alan is in a very interesting spot in the barbie world which i believe makes him uniquely suited for the movie's core conflict- an opportunity that the writers squandered (number one pathetic character apologist here). anyways, from what ive seen in the commentary and reactions this movie has, is that like weird barbie, alan is seen as a bit of a queer icon. but instead of his typical pre-movie interpretation of him just being a gay man, ive witnessed many also head canon them as non-binary as well (I'll stick to he/they pronouns for them here!) because of how much he chooses to associate with the barbies over the kens more often than not. i cannot believe that this wasn't explored more in the conclusion.
this leads me into my main argument for alan- instead of simply inspiring the resolution they should've been a much more important key player. how this might happen starts with the dance off in the third act. i think that pitting the kens against each other here was a pretty low blow narratively, it really establishes a pretty unfortunate theme for the ending which is just division between the two groups. (the barbie movie is really just misogyny but in reverse and doesn't attempt to fix any of the problems it acknowledges.) instead of infantilizing the kens -which was fine at the beginning of the movie for shits and giggles but became less funny and more frustrating as the movie went on- i think a much more productive start to the beach dance-off scene could've been alan trying to talk sense into the kens (like gloria does for the brainwashed barbies.) it would have needed to fail at this point for the sake of conflict but it would have brought in an easy applicable solution for our real life equivalent of misogyny into the narrative - men (and those apart of their sphere socially) talking to and checking their fellow peers when they are doing sexist shit
after the barbies take over the supreme court and do their thing we have a bit of tension to resolve still. even though gosling's stereotypical ken (sken) has discovered that he is kenough, that can't be said for the rest of the ken's. liu's ken #2 (real character name) should probably be the one to try to enforce the patriarchy just because of the preestablished tension. i think it would be a wonderful moment to see sken stand up to him properly here and really acknowledge alan's message here of respecting the other Barbie's as people and friends (shout out ace stereotypical barbie!) rather than objects. additionally they ask for respect in turn (equal representation on the supreme court because that ending was so foul wtf) also maybe some hand holding action because i am nothing if not a poly sken/alan/ken2 shipper- this is still a tumblr analysis what did you expect)
change 2: ruth shouldn't have been god, barbie should've
barbie becoming human at the end was weird and gross. who would actually want to be human? i'm sorry but if i lived as an inspirational concept to little girls around the world i think i would've taken that power a bit more seriously.
i'm so glad ruth was included in this movie and she should still play a key part in barbie's crisis and development. but.. instead of being god i think she should've acted more as a guiding spirit to barbie or a silly (possibly vengeful - literally just for fun i have no basis for this) ghost haunting mattel. after all, all of barbie's power comes from being an idea that can persevere throughout generations, and ruth is well... dead. i think instead of asking to become human when she got agency the conversation shouldve gone a bit more like this : ruth: what do you want barbie? barbie: honestly i don't know, is that normal? ruth: yes honey, (big dramatic monolouge about not rushing to find purpose.. etc) barbie: after everything that's happened i still dont feel like i belong ruth : that's okay too. you have all the time in the universe to decide what you want to be, youre in control of your own destiny barbie: the universe sounds nice actually, but there is one thing i need to do before i go *she fucking obliterates mattel's ceo and thats how she debuts as god*
not the best but better than her going to the fucking gyno as an ending
minor changes!
I think gloria and sasha should have gotten more development, making them mirror ruth and barbie wouldve been a nice touch. maybe an ending or after credits scene depicting the two of them having a similar conversation to the one i just described would have been silly. (also please take sasha more seriously that girl is right about everything and is listened to only a third of the time she actually gets lines. she could've been an excellent dead-pan comedic foil to the more absurdist jokes of the film, under utilized fave) big opportunity to make that conversation absolutely unhinged too:
gloria: you can be whatever you want in life kid sasha: *actively pinning up pictures of warner bros ceo david zaslav on a bulletin board with a big red x and looks directly into the camera* I know mom <3
mattel's depiction was barely passable. i have had enough of major companies being posed as villains but keeping them silly and unthreatening- its unfaithful and disrespectful to real life. start them off as silly and shitty, thats fine. it matches the tone of the movie- but as parallels between real life and the movie converge in the third act, mattel should start acting like the predatory company they actually are.
their investment in reinstating barbie as supreme leader over ken despite him making more money in the name of "feminism" would have never in a star death ever happen. literally the entire board only being men was a joke they really fucking made and still had them supporting women- it ruins the entire thesis of the movie and makes the message muddy. fix that, keep them forcefully trying to pair up barbie and ken but change it so its true life: nothing more than an effort to make more of a profit and bring patriarchy to barbieland. this would've brough the climax to an apex and match the stakes to my barbie god conclusion.
anyways yeah i loved the artistic direction of this movie and the casting but not much else! let me know if i missed anything and thx for reading

I will never forgive JJ for coming up with the idea of a renegade stormtrooper, casting a black actor for the role, and then going out of his way to do less than nothing with the character whenever he was in charge. It's even more infuriating that RJ gets all the heat for this (including from me until I wised up) when he at least tried, however weakly, to do *something* with him.
Finn's arc was basically served on a silver plate, and yet they screwed up. JJ loosely set it up, then proceeded to do nothing with him other than following a very basic "escapes the death star and gleefully joins the good guys" arc, occasionally having him as comic relief (which would not be a problem per se, but *is* a problem since it doesn't remotely address how Finn could be a funny outgoing guy despite growing up as a child soldier; but that's another issue). Rian tried to do something with him, but yeah - kind of weakly, as objectively his and Rose's subplot was never meant to be the focus of the movie or steal the scene from the main force plot.
And then JJ came back in, and - what the fuck was that? Seriously what did Finn even do in TROS? Other than following Rey around? JJ was so concerned with putting the trio together than he completely forgot those three were never a trio to begin with, but three individual characters, each with their own stuff to do, and FINN had his own established connections (Rose, Poe), his own big bad (Hux), and his own purpose (leading a stormtrooper rebellion + supporting the text that the idea of stormtroopers being irredeemable sub-human brainwashed cannon fodder is TRASH, and no, the point is that there aren't occasional good apples like him and the other rebels because the Force blessed them, but that every stormtrooper is STILL HUMAN, and each and everyone of them can be virtually DEPROGRAMMED and FREED)
and like there were faint shadows of that concept here and there but they were so haphazardly done in a haste to retcon everything related to Rose and Rian's work and please the fanbros by giving Finn random Force sensitivity, introducing a new character to be basically Rose 2.0 and giving her Finn's plot and mission AND STILL DOING NOTHING WITH IT ANYWAY, what a mess

I don't remember much of Hyacinth's book, but I think I would remember if she insulted Sophie. Is it because she called her the daughter of an actress? I don't think that was an insult. Did I miss something?
you really had to make me dig for my copy of Its in his kiss to remind me how much I dislike adult Hyacinth do you?.
So here's the line about Sophie that I take issue with. I know everyone else doesn't and if its a me problem, its a me problem. Because I dont like Hyacinth. And I adore Sophie quite a lot
“Your family might object.”
“Pffft. We’re not so high in the instep as that. My brother’s wife is the illegitimate daughter of the Earl of Penwood and an actress of God knows what provenance, and any one of us would lay down our lives for her.” Her eyes narrowed thoughtfully. “But you are not illegitimate.”
He shook his head. “To my father’s everlasting despair.”
“Well, then,” she said, “I don’t see a problem. My brother and Sophie like to live quietly in the country, in part because of her past, but we shan’t be forced to do the same. Unless of course, you wish to.”
- IIHK chapter 18
Like seriously!! this part of the conversation makes me so angry, because I'm very pro Sophie, and here is Gareth telling her all this time he's been rightfully concerned for something that's affected his entire life since he was born, and will now affect her life as his wife, because his father has some sort of grudge over it. And Hyacinth not only acts like lol what a funny thing to say Gareth. But it also sounds like she thinks Sophie is some kind of undesirable relation in the same breath she says she loves her. LOL Hyacinth what a lighthearted way to take the issue. And dont get me started on the grudge she holds towards Lucy even after she's married to Gregory
Ugh, reading it's in his kiss always makes me think that Gareth is too good for her and he deserved better.
Also to the anon who asked me what scene I wanted to see from her book. I take back what I said about Hyacinth reading to lady D, because the most hilarious scene in that book is Gareth asking for Hyacinth's hand and Anthony just being ready to sing Halleluyah because he's done marrying off his 4 sisters.
Like I said, maybe my dislike for adult Hyacinth is a me problem. But you can tell how much I dislike the crap she pulls in her book by my opinions on show Eloise, who takes a lot after her. The sheer immaturity and entitlement is so real.
And that's the tea.

Man I was on ur Twitter and first of all a solid cringe towards commenter, 0/10 behavior (im so curious for screenshots but understandable if you want to keep that close) and second of all autistic Erwin so true and valid— he’s got the masking down to a T
Idk why Levi is the one so hc as neurodivergent tbh, I see him as the more resolutely neurotypical one but to make up for it he has a million other flavors of things up with him
bahaha yeah that was a funny tiff, definitely not the most egregious thing that you can encounter online but for sure a charming reminder of all the personalities in fandom.
erwin being on the spectrum is so intuitive to me at this point, like it's as embedded in my characterization of him as levi's transness is to him GRAH the way that he's a character who feels so deeply but struggles to communicate his compassion, and so defers to letting people assume that he's cold and unfeeling 😭the way he overcompensates for it through his overly polite speech, the way he oscillates between unflinching conviction and abject self-defeatism it's so GOOOOODDDD AAAGGHHH
as for neurodivergent levi headcanons, i obviously don't have a problem with people doing transformative fiction, but i do think it's pretty typical of the way that people tend to project onto levi by emphasizing and elaborating on his internal character struggles. sometimes that comes in the form of pathologizing some of his peculiarities (giving him anger issues or cleaning OCD, for example), or it's just in terms of classic whump tropes where he suffers inordinately for the sake of reader/author catharsis. not to say that i'm at all innocent of this with erwin though LMAO
personally, i do agree with you that levi is the more 'neurotypical' between him and erwin, though 'neurotypical' doesn't mean normal or even relatable. he's definitely a very extreme guy who is alarmingly efficient at tactical dissociation (the way soldiers are trained to dehumanize their targets, but levi probably adopted this way of thinking in order to survive, and can draw upon it easily to torture and maim if so ordered). regardless, he's been shown as consistently capable of making level-headed decisions at the inattention to his own emotional needs- the one exception, of course, being his choice in midnight sun. gay people and the apocalyptic implications of their love oh my god.
anyway my general take on levi is that he basically has himself sorted out, and the struggles that we see him undergo in canon are primarily external ones that serve to test or refine his pre-existing principles. he falls into self-doubt in momentary bursts, but i can't recall when he's allowed those feelings to seriously impede on his ability to act, or when those feelings became a holistic warping of reality, like how erwin experiences them. what's important to note about erwin is that he doesn't just dislike himself, it's that his guilt and self-loathing is so total that it disrupts his ability to objectively perceive reality. he'll take the least charitable self-narrative over the most accurate one, in basically every instance ;;;;;;
but i ramble 🙈thank you for the interesting ask anon! i'm glad i could blather about these characters again :'D
