Aspd culture is realizing 'huh. I only have one person in my life other than myself who id feel sad about dying or genuinely feel emotional empathy for when theyre hurt. Strange' and then going on to say you dont have aspd because youre not commiting crimes 24/7 and telling people they should die when they piss you off.

your post about self-dx autistics and ‘online’ trans people is so true and the thing is these people won’t take any criticism because it’ll automatically be understood as ableism/transphobia or ‘oppression olympics’ when it’s just about understanding different dynamics of oppression. in the last few years i went from typical theyfab "i’m not a girl but i’ll live like one because it doesn’t bother me" to openly trans butch trying to go on HRT, and from undiagnosed LSN autistic to diagnosed (MSN?) autistic+physically disabled, and it completely changed the way i was treated (online & irl) and the way i live my life. and i was still trans & autistic before but it’s just a different experience, just like now my experience is still extremely different from that of autistic people with HSN or tma trans people. i think when your identity isn’t really threatening/harming your quality of life it’s easier to weaponize it? like there’s a lot of focus on validity and it’s an important topic but for many people being ‘valid’ is the least of their concerns because their identity actually affects their life in negative way. yes you are valid if you are trans and don’t want to do any form of medical/administrative transition and experience very little dysphoria, yes you are valid if you’re a fully-verbal hyper-empathetic independent and social autistic, but also don’t act like you understand everyone else’s struggles and can talk over them... (general ‘you’ obviously not directed at you)
this topic annoys me and it’s nice to see people talking about it
exactly! its ppl acting like the high authority and like they Know what its like to experience transphobia/ableism even tho theyre the part of the community thats affected by it the least

just wanted to say it's super cool you're professionally diagnosed!!! i'm very pro (informed) self-dx, but it's nice to see that there's medical professionals out there that take minors seriously :') gives me hope haha
yeah! it took a lot of work to find people who would treat us (complexity of our case, etc), but there’s definitely professionals out there who listen to people like us :)
wishing you the best, anon <3

steaming hot take but there are just some things self diagnosed people just can’t talk over professionally diagnosed people about
#actual sugar post#don’t kill me for this I’m autistic#and I’m not completely anti self dx either#the medical industry is awful and has the power to take away the benefits my diagnosis allowed me to access at any time#and I’m not going to pretend that professional diagnosis is always the most reliable option because there is a lot of ingrained bias#but at a certain point#if you are self diagnosed you have to understand that you and I are different#and you have to be willing to listen to us sometimes#and hell. sometimes you’ll even have to listen to a doctor on the subject#sometimes their input can be valuable when they’re not calling you a fat hysterical bitch and asking you to cough up thousands of dollars#I’m not denying your symptoms and experiences as a self diagnosed person. i don’t know you and im not living your life#but maybe a second opinion from someone who’s been diagnosed is a bit more valuable than you think it is#we’ve had a lot of experiences that you haven’t#besides. You don’t need a label to acknowledge something you’re going through or validate your problems#for example it doesn’t NEED to always be autism if you show a few traits. you can just tell people you show those traits#do whatever makes life easier for you. you don’t need all these labels to have these issues#I’m going to get the worst anons for this I just know it#idk#sugars opinions#self diagnosis#professional diagnosis#autism stuff#autism#actually autistic#neurodivergent#adhd#audhd#actually audhd

is it possible to potentially meet the criteria for aspd (in dsm)but not actually have it
Yes. So, the DSM is pretty explicit about not being a recipe book for disorders, which is why specialized professionals are the only ones who can diagnose you on paper. What they mean by that is that you cannot just do a checkbox-style quiz and say "well I have 3 or more of the symptoms so I have the disorder"; It's not exactly that simple.
The other stuff that has to be accounted for includes development criteria (things that we know to be necessary to have developed ASPD) mostly involving some sort of childhood trauma or maldeveloped attachment to caregivers, differential diagnosis (checking for the disorders that are frequently similar to ASPD symptoms from the outside and are not compatible with being comorbid with ASPD), and a section detailing the way symptoms generally present itself as well as associated traits and other info on basically what a pwASPD is like.
Not all of this info is super detailed or accurate as even the DSM does have stigma, but the DSM does not aim to be all-encompassing. It aims to guide people (especially newer providers with less experience) on what experience they should pull from to determine if a diagnosis fits a person or not.
Many, many people will fit the symptom criteria for ASPD, including some who have no disorder at all besides maybe an adjustment disorder.
That is why for accurate self-diagnosis, you need to spend time (after doing the clinical research including but not just the current DSM) with the community, either asking respectful questions or silently reading and listening to the life and experiences of people diagnosed with the disorder, as well as with other disorders you need to rule out. As many people as possible, in fact, because you are trying to replicate years of professional experience with people with various disorders, histories, family, trauma, cultures, ages, genders, etc etc etc.
That's why self-diagnosis involves significantly more than just reading the DSM entry, but that is a very important start.
Super great question, thank you for giving me the space to speak on this. /gen

Hello! Asking out of genuine curiosity, I mean no offence and you don't have to respond at all, but I was wondering how you discovered that you have NPD? I'm realising that it might be something I have as well, and I'd like to hear more about how other people got diagnosed (prof or self-dx, either way) to help me figure it out, if you don't mind talking about it. Thank you and I hope you have a nice day!
well, first and foremost, I’ll say this—I’ve had three therapists and all of them have told me point blank that they refuse to diagnose any cluster b personality disorders in someone who does not display abusive behavior. so naturally, I’ve had to figure this out entirely on my own.
when I suspect I might have a specific mental illness or disorder, I conduct a complete background check of all the relevant symptoms and DSM-V criteria I can find, as well as research the experiences of the other people who have this condition. what I do is simple—go through each symptom (and how people describe experiencing those symptoms), and try to find examples of said symptoms in my own life. this usually takes me anywhere from 2-3 months to a year.
for example, one of the symptoms of NPD is delusions of grandeur. beyond the practical aspects of thorough and well-intended self-diagnosis when I have no professional alternative available to me, I genuinely believe my judgment is superior to any medical professionals’, even the ones who might listen. that’s plenty of evidence in and of itself, although I can think of 20 other ways in which I obnoxiously overestimate myself (right down to the painfully pretentious way I speak and write).
that’s all I’m willing to share right now—I’m not comfortable discussing the specifics of my findings publicly with someone who gets to stay anonymous. I mean no offense by this, but your ask could very well be bait intended to out me as “one of those edgy faker kids trying to undermine the treatment and skew the public perception of real narcissists.” so, I’m not taking any chances.

hello! I saw the post about your bestie being diagnosed with autism and the aq test. I have not been diagnosed myself I actually haven't been to a physiologist in years but I suspect I might have autism. There are too many examples but my cousin has autism and my mom (who got a late adhd diagnosis) has told me in passing that I do some things that my cousin does except he has autism. But that's just one thing, all of this to say I've done the aq test and got a 35 score and I wanted your opinion? If you think there might be a high chance? I know I should get assessed by a professional but right now that is not in my means so just wanted your general thoughts.
Hi, so first of all to clarify she isn’t being diagnosed as autistic because you have to get a specific neuropsych assessment for that and the waiting times for referrals are like 1 year+ currently, her psych is just obsessed with the idea that she is and is trying to convince (coerce, tbh) her that she is.
But regardless, if you scored 35 on the aq that’s a good indicator that there’s definitely a good chance you might he autistic and you should get an assessment if an official diagnosis is something you would like to have. I scored a 48 or 49 on the aq so there was never any doubt at all on that one lol.
Also a quick note, generally autistics prefer to use identity-first language (autistic) rather than person-first language (having autism) because it’s a neurodevelopmental condition and an ineherent part of who you are, rather than like a disease whatever that you could and should want to get rid of. It’s pretty much agreed upon in the autistic community that person-first language is ableist, so I’d recommend always using identity-first language unless you’re talking to or about someone who has specified they prefer otherwise.

That person arguing about the transx thing is either coming from a privelleged mindset or doesn't know as much about things as they think they do.
I have had multiple professionals agree that I have things going on, but getting a single diagnosis would cost thousands of dollars and I am in poverty. Getting any of the diagnosis that I want would also put me at a structural disadvantage even if it did allow me to access disability support.
Therapists aren't always safe either, because they can be total inconsiderate assholes.
Ugh.

I really wanted to write some scenarios for this one bc its so cute but my hands are full from the event atm DX but have some thoughts.
EDIT: I really can't do short answers huh? I didn't really put too much time in editing so characters might be a bit off
Warning: Not proofread!! Childe background story spoilers

So, I think this would work best with the characters that are socially awkward or have a desperate need for safety/affection. Some candidates:
Kaeya
For someone who looks socially confident, he's got some unsolved trauma and no secure relationships in his life. (Not after what happened with Diluc. Even if they reconciled, there is still a scar never to be healed again.) So it’s always been a struggle for him to show his true self. When you come around he'll feel conflicted about his emotions.
It’s not that he doesn’t trust you. You're kind and you've always been there for him, - but he can't help the 'what if's' that appear whenever he tries to open up.
What if there's someone better out there? What if he's no longer the cool and fun cavalry captain when he opens up? When will he eventually be rejected or abandoned?
These thoughts swirl inside his head like a parasite, but you've always been the brightest light in his life. He won't be too surprised if one day you'll outshine the shadows of his past.
It's somewhere in the evening when you drop by his office. Nothing spectacular happened that day, you simply wanted to check up on him.
And you're glad you did. Piles of unfinished paperwork lay on his desk and while he tries to hide it, exhaustion peeks through his smile. He’s always been one to downplay his emotions.
With your own smile you walk over to Kaeya. His hair falls in front of his eyepatch and you gently brush some strands away. You've always had the need to be close to people, something Kaeya never seems to mind, and so you wrap your arms around him as he sits down in his office chair.
His body freezes in place when the words leave your lips. 'I'm proud of you, Kaeya.' - something he hadn't heard in forever. Kaeya forces himself to bite down any emotion that came with it. He didn't want to be a burden, to be anything else than someone fun to be around.
But you somehow seemed to catch up on his silent wishes. You always did.
He wished he had the courage to tell you how much it means to him when you check up on him after a long day.
For now he'll simply hold onto your affection. Like a child clinging onto their teddybear at night, it's his comfort when the world grows dark.
Tumblr media
Childe
Man's been robbed out of his childhood and innocence. At age 14 he was forced to kill or be killed, trained until he formed the Foul Legacy to survive in the abyss. And when he finally submerged from that pit he got sent away to the Fatui because his family couldn't handle him anymore.
Childe is no saint. But when you have that adorable frown on your face as you scold him for his injuries, he feels a bit more 'normal'.
In the back of Childe's mind, he's always convinced that people need ulterior motives to be kind. Perhaps it's because he's surrounded by the fatui, harbingers - the most dangerous persons on Teyvat and has seen several abyssal creatures. No one is kind.
Either way, he can't stop or deny the dark thoughts that seem to pop up at the most unconventional moments.
He lifts his arm up, giving you access to the cut he'd gotten in battle. Your smaller hands are moving around too quick for his liking, bandaging him and cleaning his wounds with unnecessarily fragility. Under any other circumstance, he'd shrug the wound off and continue the day without any more care.
You're talking. It's a soothing noise to him. He doesn't really hear what you're rambling about, though. He's trying to focus but his mind is in shambles.
You're so gentle. What if he'll snap one day? Will you forgive him? What if the abyss finds you?
Somewhere in the process of thinking he grabbed your hand. He only realized so when you gently squeezed back in his hold. “Are you okay? If it hurts please tell me.” Your gentle gaze meets his blank one.
His hair shakes along with his head. “I'm alright.”
For now, he had no witty comeback. He'd be silent, enjoying this moment of torture as you finally give him what he's lost at 14 years old; care and affection
