“You’re staring,” Ominis murmured before letting out a quiet sigh. “Again.”
“She’s talking to Weasley,” Sebastian muttered back, his arms folded across his chest.
“Which one?” he asked, a wry smile slipping into his face. Ominis didn’t need to be able to see to know Sebastian was glaring at him.
“Garreth, you prat.” A brief silence fell over the pair as Sebastian continued to watch the interaction between Y/N and Garreth Weasley. Y/N threw her head back and laughed at something Garreth said, and Sebastian felt something in his chest tighten as the sun caught on the natural highlights hidden in her hair. “He can’t be that funny.” Garreth muttered something to Y/N and she turned in his direction to catch his eye. He felt every nerve in his body as she smiled sweetly at him and waved her fingers to say hello before looking back at the wizard in front of her. “He’s just using her.”
“How can you be so sure?” Ominis’ eyebrows shot up in surprise as he turned his head to look at Sebastian (he hoped he was, at least).
“Isn’t everyone?” Sebastian asked. Ominis had been there with him that fateful day in the bathrooms. They had both heard what had been said, had both heard the chorus of laughter and agreement that followed.
“Everyone but you, you mean.”
“Don’t be ridiculous, Ominis,” he looked away from Y/N to narrow his eyes at his friend beside him. “You’re not using her either.”
“Aren’t I?” Ominis asked. There was a beat of silence between them before he laughed loudly at the lack of response from the brunet, and he could almost picture the incredulous look being shot his way.
Sebastian would blame the sun, he decided, if anyone asked why he was frowning in your direction. It had come out today, and the trio had taken advantage of the warmth it provided to sit in the gardens by the north entrance for the castle. It seemed they hadn’t been the only ones to have the idea and it wasn’t long before Y/N had leapt from her position in the grass next to him to greet Natsai Onai and the red-clad gaggle that seemed to follow. Sebastian couldn’t help but begrudge Natty (who was a wonderful witch despite being in Gryffindor) from stealing you away from him. He had been content with your arm pressed against his, your legs touching as you stretched out beside him, head almost resting on his shoulder as you watched the clouds drift by.
Ominis twirled his wand idly in his hands, the sensor pulsing every-so-often to let him know Sebastian was still brooding beside him. Although he didn’t need it to, because if he listened carefully he could hear Sebastian mutter to himself occasionally as he more than likely watched Y/N from across the gardens. It wasn’t loud enough for Ominis to hear everything he was saying, but he did manage to catch phrases such as stupid Gryffindors and was just going to hold her hand. The latter made Ominis snort in amusement. Sebastian had been working up the courage to admit his feelings for the third member of their little group since the beginning of their sixth year, and now here they were nearing the end of their seventh and final year.
He had tried to tell Sebastian - time and time again - that there was nothing to fear and that he strongly suspected you returned his feelings, but he refused to listen. Ominis wouldn’t outright betray your trust and inform Sebastian of the late night conversations they shared where you voiced your concerns for the brunet, voice tinged with more than just friendly admiration. Instead, he subtly tried to push the pair together with flimsy excuses to explain his perpetual absence. Not that it did any good when either of you refused to acknowledge the Erumpent in the room.
It could be worse, he mused, I could actually have to witness the pining between them, instead of just hearing about it.
“Get up,” Sebastian nudged Ominis gently and stood up. “Come on.”
“Where are we going?”
“We’re going to save Y/N,” Sebastian replied as if it were the most obvious thing in the world.
“Y/N doesn’t need saving,” Ominis rolled his eyes, but stood up nonetheless, brushing grass from his robes. “In fact, I need to remind you that she has saved us. Several times.”
“Well, call this us returning the favour,” he tugged Ominis in the right direction softly before letting go of his robes and stalking over to where Y/N and Garreth were sat talking, set a little apart from the rest of the Gryffindors. “Y/N…Weasley.” He nodded once at the wizard and came to a stop right next to Y/N. Ominis, wand held aloft, offered the ground an awkward smile. “I can’t believe you left us for a bunch of Gryffindors,” he looked down at her, forcing a chuckle so he didn’t start an inter-house fight. “Are we not enough for you?”
“Don’t start,” Y/N laughed and rolled her eyes at him. “Garreth was just telling me about his newest potion idea.”
“Planning on getting her into more trouble by making her sneak into Sharp’s office for supplies again?” The comment earned Sebastian a nudge in the ribs from Y/N, but Garreth chuckled and shook his head.
“Actually, I was hoping Y/N would accompany me to the Forbidden Forest soon to gather some ingredients.”
“Not man enough to go it alone?” Sebastian nodded thoughtfully. The tips of Garreth’s ears were tinged pink as he looked between the three of them, before an easygoing smile fell across his features.
“Is that why you keep asking her to join you on trips to spider caves?” Ominis let a laugh slip out at Garreth’s words, and Sebastian shot him a glare for it. Y/N shuffled nervously on her feet between them all, sensing some tension simmering under the surface. She wasn’t sure why they were both standing there, chests puffed out, and had a feeling she didn’t want to know. The only one who didn’t seem to be stancing was Ominis, who looked just as out of place as she felt.
“I don’t mind going into the forest,” Y/N supplied quietly. Two pairs of eyes shot her way, and Ominis looked a little to her left. “I mean, I need to go anyway. Ms Bugbrooke asked me to go and check in on a unicorn she named Hazel and find a way to keep her safe.”
“I thought we were going to go do that this weekend?” Sebastian asked.
“You could all go,” Ominis supplied. He could feel Y/N relax from beside him, her hand reaching between their robes to squeeze his arm in gratitude. “Saves for multiple trips to the forest.”
“I don’t think that’s wise,” Sebastian frowned, crossing his arms. Garreth gave them all a half-hearted smile and shrugged.
“You let me know, Y/N. I’ve got to get to Charms, I can’t be late again or Ronen will tell my aunt,” he shuddered at the thought and waved goodbye to the three of them before turning to walk away. Y/N offered Garreth a forced smile as he left and waited until he was well out of earshot before whirling around to face Sebastian and hit him with her glove.
“What was that?”
“What was what?”
“Don’t play dumb, Sebastian. It doesn’t become you.”
“Sweetheart, everything becomes me,” he sent her a cocky grin, his body language loosening now that Garreth was gone. “Do you want me to walk you - both of you - to class?” He bent down to pick up her discarded bag and slung it over his shoulder.
“Don’t change the subject,” she sighed in annoyance, her eyes narrowing. “You always seem to do this whenever I’m speaking to someone.”
“I don’t do it to Poppy, Natty, Imelda, or Ominis.”
“Please, leave me out of this,” Ominis muttered, looking away from them as they began to walk to the castle for class. Even though he knew he couldn’t see it, Sebastian still shot his friend a look as if to say way to back me up, help me out here and hoped he would get the message. The trio walked in silence until they passed the History of Magic classroom.
“Why don’t you let me talk to any of our classmates?”
“You’re talking to me, aren’t you? And you speak to Ominis all the time,” Sebastian gestured at his friend, who cringed internally at being brought back into this. He hoped if he kept silent that they would forget he was there, and perhaps he could sneak off and make it to class on his own. Not that it would do much good - he shared his next class with Y/N, and Sebastian was sure to follow. They had overheard a conversation between her, Imelda, Poppy and Natty about the chivalrous actions some of the wizards at the school took to get the attention of the witches and which ones in particular seemed to charm the girls the most. Ever since then Sebastian had held her school bag and walked her to every class.
“Stop trying to be charming, Sebastian. I’m annoyed at you.”
“You think I’m charming?” Sebastian grinned down at her, earning a quiet whack as she hit him with her glove again. “Why are you so violent today?”
“Why are you so bothersome today?” she shot back. Ominis smiled to himself and walked a little faster. As much as he enjoyed hearing Y/N rip into Sebastian, he did not want to get caught in the middle.
Y/N wrapped her arms around herself, trying to fight the chill that lingered in the stone walls after the warmth they had felt outside. Sebastian had been acting differently lately. Some days he was attentive, almost sweet; others like today, he was a nuisance, plain and simple. She never knew who she was going to get - the man who greeted her with coffee and a smile in the mornings, his hand lingering on hers after he handed her the mug, or the sulking mass walking by her. Her eyes fell on his back, watching as his muscles rippled through the white shirt, at her bag hanging on his shoulder.
He never aimed that gruffness in her direction, she realised. Even now, he was holding her bag for her and looked over his shoulder to see if she was still with them, a breathtaking smile falling on his face when he caught her eye. It was only ever when one of their male classmates spoke to her, standing a little too close that he began to act out, and despite his protests that she spoke to Ominis, she had seen him do it with him too. It was to a lesser scale, but even this morning he had placed himself between the pair as they all sat in the sun, his shoulder pressed against hers.
“Why won’t you let me speak to any men?” the words slipped out of her mouth before she could process them. Sebastian came to a stop and looked at her in confusion. She was vaguely aware of Ominis slowing as well from in front of them, a low groan escaping from him.
“What?”
“That conversation you were having with Garreth wasn’t exactly pleasant, and it’s not the first time this has happened.” Sebastian watched as she twisted her fingers together nervously and longed to take her hand in his. “Don’t you want me to be happy?”
“You think Weasley is going to make you happy?” Sebastian raised an eyebrow.
“I-I don’t know! But how am I meant to find out when you keep…”
“When I keep…?” His casual tone infuriated Y/N, and judging by the amusement in his eye and the twitch in the corner of his mouth, he knew it.
“When you keep acting so possessive!”
“Maybe I’m just a good judge of character and know none of those simpering idiots who keep coming over are enough for you.”
“Enough for me - ” Ire flared at his words and she gave him a withering look. “You have some nerve, Sebastian Sallow. And you,” she glared at Ominis, who had the decency to look a little frazzled at her anger. “I expected better from you, you’re always by his side whenever this happens. Care to explain yourself?” Ominis shook his head slowly and backed away a few steps as Sebatian came forward.
“Don’t take it out on him, he had no part in this.”
“Good to know the stupidity started and ended with you, then,” Y/N snapped. She turned her back on him and walked a few steps away to calm down. “Why do you always do this to me, Sebastian? Give me one good reason why you keep acting out like this.”
“I’m only looking out for your best interests. You need someone who will challenge you,” Sebastian stood taller, annoyance flashing in his eyes. “Not a lapdog who will roll over every time you call their name. You need an equal.” Ominis grimaced at his best friend's words and slowly began to back away. He didn’t make it too far before someone bumped into him, pausing to listen to the argument occurring in the hallway.
“Who are you to presume anything about my happiness?” Y/N stalked forward to poke Sebastian in the chest roughly. “Who would even fit within your insane standards for me? Who would challenge me, make me happy, treat me as their equal?” she asked, all but spitting the words at him. “You?”
“Maybe.” Sebastian shrugged, not quite meeting her eye as he shuffled between his feet nervously.
“You…” Y/N let out an incredulous laugh. “You’re something else, Sallow.” In all the times Y/N had imagined Sebastian admitting he may return his feelings for her it never went like this, in a corridor attracting the attention of their classmates with their fight. “I have done nothing but wait for you to notice me for two years, Sebastian. And when I finally realise you’ll never see me the way I want and decide to move on, that’s when you’re determined to want me?”
“I don’t just want you,” his voice was hoarse with her declaration. Two years? How could she not see that I’ve noticed her, that I've only ever noticed her? How could this have gone wrong so fast.
“You’re nothing but a jealous coward.” With one final poke to the chest, Y/N took her bag and started to walk away from him and the little crowd that had gathered.
“You think I don’t know how selfish I’m being?” Sebastian called out, suddenly finding his voice. He followed her path, near enough pushing anyone aside who stood in his way. “I would give anything - anything - to go back to that day we first met. Back when all you were was Atë personified, before I realised how absolutely breathtaking every inch of your soul is. You’ve ruined me, Y/N!”
“And that’s my fault?”
“I’m not saying that!” Sebastian groaned and reached for the sleeve of her robe to pull her to a stop. He quickly rescinded his hand when she shot him a menacing glare as if to say I dare you.
“Then what are you saying?” she asked. Doubt clutched him, stopping the words from leaving his mouth. He must have waited a beat too long to respond because Y/N sighed, and the disappointment on her face was enough to bring him to his knees as she continued to walk away from him, the students they had attracted parting to let her through. She had made it halfway down the corridor when sharp panic squeezed his chest tightly.
“I’m in love with you!” he shouted after her. His face flamed at the confession, at the sudden whispers of those around him as his words echoed down the stone corridor. Y/N stopped, and for a second Sebastian felt hope that she would turn around and say she loved him too. That it was him she wanted, who she always wanted.
“Well, you have a funny way of showing it.” He watched in despair as she walked away from him, slipping through the doors that would take her into another hall. There was a dull roaring in his ears, drowning out the sudden whispers that had started around him. A gentle hand landed on his shoulder and he looked over slowly to see Ominis, a grim look on his face. Sebastian couldn’t bear to see the sympathy in his gaze, to hear the voices around him talking about his rejected confession.
“All right, show’s over!” he growled, shaking Ominis’ hand from his shoulder. “Everyone clear off.” He rolled his shoulders and stood a little straighter before stalking down the corridor. The younger students jumped out of his way, and he caught the looks of pity from those in his year. Poppy tried to step forward and speak to him, but he just shook his head at her and walked out of the hall and made his way to the Undercroft.
*~*~*~*~*
It had been nearly a week since Y/N and Sebastian’s argument in the middle of the hallway and she could still hear people whisper about it as she walked by, as if she couldn’t hear a word they were saying. A group of Ravenclaws were sitting at a table in the library near Y/N, Poppy and Imelda, and every-so-often they looked over and started to giggle.
“Just ignore them,” Poppy murmured to her.
“No,” Imelda glared at the group, who immediately quieted down and looked away. “They need to learn to keep their mouths shut, or I’ll do it for them.” She raised her voice just enough for them to hear her threat and they quickly packed their things and left in a flurry of navy robes.
“You can’t threaten everyone in the school, Imelda,” Y/N said with a sigh, not looking up from her Charms textbook. Another group would soon come and replace that one, and the cycle would just repeat itself.
“Watch me.” Her grin was unnerving to say the least. “What’s he doing in here?” Y/N looked up to see Sebastian walking up the stairs into the upper part of the library where they were currently sitting. He looked around, a little unsure of himself and Y/N’s heart clenched in her chest at the sight. He always looked so confident, even when he was utterly terrified, but now he just looked lost. “He better not come over here.”
“Imelda,” Poppy sighed and shook her head. “We don’t even know if he’s here for Y/N, he could be here to study.” Even though Poppy was right, Y/N couldn’t help but wish that he was here for her, that he wanted to speak to her.
“No you don’t, wipe that look off your face,” Imelda pointed her quill at Y/N. “Don’t go mooning over him after what he’s put you through. You don’t need someone who’s going to treat you that poorly.”
“He doesn’t exactly look great himself.”
“Who’s side are you on, Sweeting?”
“I didn’t realise there were any.” Y/N rolled her eyes as the pair continued to bicker, her gaze turning back to Sebastian, who had turned in their direction as he heard Poppy and Imelda arguing. He caught her eye and began to slowly make his way to their table, casting a weary glance at Imelda as he neared.
“What do you want, Sallow?” Imelda snapped at him, turning on him as he got closer.
“Hello, Sebastian, are you alright?” Poppy nudged her in reprimand and offered him an awkward smile.
“I-I’d like to speak to Y/N, if that’s okay,” he asked, not quite looking at any of them.
“Come to shout more declarations of love in my face?” It was a low blow, and Y/N knew it. She watched as he flinched slightly and looked away from her, his shoulders slumped in defeat. She was vaguely aware of Poppy grabbing onto Imelda’s robes to pull her away while the latter protested as she stared at him. There were dark circles under his eyes as if he hadn’t slept in days, and his shirt and robes were rumpled. “Sit down,” she muttered, closing her book. “You look like you’re about to pass out from exhaustion.”
Sebastian listened, his hands running through his hair as he slumped down into a seat. He looked awful, Y/N noted, eyes wandering over his frame. It went beyond the creased clothes and the lack of sleep. He looked paler, and Y/N watched as he sighed heavily and rubbed a hand down his face.
“I’m sorry, Y/N. I went too far.” There was a different level of weariness in his voice, it went down to his bones, his very soul. The man in front of her was not the one she had fallen for. Her heart ached as he looked up at her slowly with dull eyes. “I always go too far.”
“You do,” she murmured. His eyes slid shut at her words and he braced himself for a blow that wasn’t coming. “And yet, somehow, I always forgive you for it.” She hated admitting it out loud, but once her rage had simmered and the adrenaline had left her a few hours after their fight, she had forgiven him. She could never stay mad at him for long. Even after their only other argument that had happened in the Undercroft years ago when he had called her ignorant for trusting a goblin and stormed out she hadn’t been hurt or angry, just concerned for him.
“I don’t deserve you.”
“No, you don’t.” She waited until he looked at her before giving him a small, teasing smile. They stared at each other for a few seconds in silence, each drinking in the different ways the other had changed in the past few days until Y/N sighed and looked away again. “I’m not an object to be possessed, Sebastian. You can’t just stake your claim on me.”
“I never…I’m sorry. I don’t mean to be like this. I just…” he sighed and tried to sit a little straighter in his seat. Y/N waited patiently for him to finish his sentence, waited as the wheels turned in his head and he tried to figure out what he wanted to say. He looked at her from the corner of his eye, his heart constricting in his chest and he saw the matching dark rings under her eyes.
“I’m not going to fight you, Sebastian,” Y/N said gently, reaching his hand. She stopped before she could touch it and instead started to fiddle with the quill Poppy had left behind. “You can say what you need to.”
“It’s not pleasant.”
“None of this has been.”
“No, it hasn’t,” he smiled without humour and finally looked her in the eye. “Ominis and I once heard a conversation in the bathroom. I don’t think they realised we were in there, and they were gone before we could confront them. They were talking about you. About how they wanted to spend time with you and ask you to accompany them - alone, might I add - to the Three Broomsticks so that they could be seen with the Hero of Hogwarts.” Sebastian all but spat the nickname out, hating it in that moment. “They all left before I could see who they were. Ever since then I’ve stood between you and anyone who looked like they were trying to express interest because I didn’t know who was genuine and who was just using you.”
“Garreth…” Sebastian hated himself for being the one to break the news, for putting that heartbroken expression on her face. Y/N felt her stomach churn in revulsion and grief. She wasn’t stupid, she knew there were people in the school who only wanted to be seen with her because of what she was as opposed to who she was. She knew some of the requests she politely turned down for company and a drink in Hogsmeade weren’t out of attraction, but rather a ploy to get into her graces. She never suspected Garreth would be one of them. She was hurt - not because she had feelings for him, but because she had thought they were friends.
“No, I made a mistake with him.” He pulled a face as he admitted he was wrong. “It turns out he actually wants to get to know you - the real you.” Oh. Oh. Y/N felt her face flush and Sebastian looked away. He couldn’t bear to watch her blush over Garreth Weasley, or anyone, for that matter.
“What about you?”
“What about me?”
“Your delivery was less than ideal but…did you mean it? Do you mean it?” she asked nervously, her voice no more than a whisper. Sebastian hated the look on her face, hated seeing her so unsure of herself.
“Y/N, I’ve been in love with you since our fifth year.”
“What does that mean?”
“It means,” he held a hand out for hers, letting her make the decision if she wanted to take it or not. A few seconds passed, and he was just about to rescind the offer, when she shyly placed her hand in his. He squeezed her hand gently, his thumb brushing her knuckles as he tried not to think about how perfectly her hand fit in his. “It means that I want you to be happy,” he murmured, “and if Weasley makes you happy - or anyone else who wishes to genuinely court you - I’ll take a step back.”
It hurt him to say the words out loud, to voice the possibility that after all this she wouldn’t want him anymore. Not the way she had once, the way he currently still wanted her. He let her collect her thoughts, watched as she chewed on her lower lip.
“What if…what if I don’t want you to?” Y/N asked, voice so quiet he almost missed it.
Sebastian’s heart stuttered at the blush that rose to her cheeks, and he wanted nothing more than to pull her into his arms, to be the only one that made her blush like that ever again. For the rest of their lives. The thought startled him slightly, but he realised it was true. He wasn’t saying he wanted to marry her (although, a rather enticing image of Y/N floating down the aisle to him in a white dress did flash to mind), but he wanted to stay by her side. Whether that was in a friendly capacity or more. Merlin, did he hope it was more.
“I meant what I said too, about waiting for you to notice me,” she continued.
“Darling, I’ve not noticed anyone else since the day I met you.” He brushed his thumb across the back of her hand again and squeezed it gently before pressing a kiss to her knuckles. He watched in satisfaction as her blush deepened, and tried to read the flicker of emotions that passed across her face. “I’m more than aware my confession was…something, to say the least (Y/N rolled her eyes at this) but I meant what I said. I’m in love with you, Y/N Y/L/N. I have been for a while now.” She looked away, unable to handle the deep emotions swirling in his eyes, that are written clearly on his face for anyone to see. She didn’t doubt for a second that he was telling the truth. “I don’t expect you to say it back.”
“I…I’m not good with all of this. I can’t quite say if it’s love but…” Her face burns, and she feels as if it will be a permanent shade of red after this conversation. “I am entranced by you, Sebastian Sallow. I’ve never been in love before, never felt it in anything more than a friendly capacity, but with you…it’s different. It runs far deeper than I can explain.” She presses a hand to her chest, right above her heart that is beating so hard it’s a wonder he can’t hear it. “I can’t picture my life without you in it, whether that is as a friend or more.”
Y/N doesn’t know how else to put it into words. She can’t seem to say that it’s been him from the very beginning. From the moment she beat him in their first duel and he was thrilled instead of being put out she knew she was in trouble. She’d only fallen faster and harder since then, from their first trip to Hogsmeade where he flirted with her the whole way, until the day his uncle had died and she had talked Ominis out of sending him to Azkaban.
“You don’t need to say it back,” Sebastian repeated, his grip on her hand tightening as he took note of the adoration in her eyes. “I mean, how could you not be in love with me?” Y/N laughed loudly before clapping her hand over her mouth suddenly. They waited with baited breath for Scribner to come and reprimand them, only relaxing when they couldn’t hear her making her way up the stairs.
“You have to apologise to Garreth.” Sebastian groaned at her words, but there was a smile on his face that he couldn’t quite hide from her. Already he looked better. He still needed a good night’s sleep, in Y/N’s opinion, but life was returning to his eyes and he sat a little straighter, a little taller.
“Where does this leave us?” he asked, shuffling his chair closer to hers so their knees could press together under the table. He hooked one foot under her ankle and tangled their legs together, enjoying the look on her face as he did so.
“I’m still mad at you. But knowing you did this to be noble…to protect me. That lessens the blow.” She gently squeezed his leg between hers, grinning to herself as she watched him take his turn to blush. “I do hope you know I don’t need protection though.”
“My still-healing ego from our first Defence Against the Dark Arts class together remembers.”
He’s rewarded with her laugh again, her real one, and he makes a silent promise to make her laugh the same way every day for the rest of their lives. Every muscle in his body loosens at the sound, and he feels like he can finally breathe again when she grins at him and tugs him a little closer by his tie.
“If you ever pull a stunt like this again…” Although there was still a smile on her face, the threat was evident in her eyes. He nodded quickly, throat bobbing as she twirled his tie between her fingers and let go. She watches as he looks down at her lips nervously and gratification shot her through as his face slowly flushed. A smirk falls on her face at this, and she raises an eyebrow at him when he finally looks up to meet her gaze. “Feeling a little warm?”
“What, no.” He leans back and rubs the back of his neck, his blush deepening.
“Ah, so you’re just blushing like a third year at the thought of kissing me.”
“I’m not blushing.”
“So you want to kiss me?”
“Darling, I always want to kiss you.” The look he gives her makes her stomach flip.  “Can I…”
“Not until you ask me properly.”
“To kiss you?”
“Sebastian.”
“Alright, alright, fine,” he grins, loving the way she rolls her eyes at him. “Will you do me the honour of joining me on a trip to Hogsmeade?”
“Right now?”
“Right now.”
“Sebastian, it’s nearly curfew.”
“And when has that stopped you before?” he laughs and begins to gather her things into her bag before slinging it over his shoulder. He holds a hand out to her expectantly and waits until she grabs a hold of it before they leave the library, waving goodbye at Imelda and Poppy (who are doing their very best - and failing - to eavesdrop). They make it as far as the doors that lead to the greenhouses when Sebastian pulls her under the stairs, ensuring no one can see them as they dip into one of the shadows. She meets him halfway, pressing their lips together in a long overdue kiss.
“Do you have any final demands for this? For us?” he murmurs against her lips.
“Only one.” Her fingers run through his hair and his heart stutters in his chest. “I’m never going to make this easy for you. I'm going to challenge you every day for the rest of our lives.”
“I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

Missing Time Pt.2
××××××××××××××××××××××××××××
Here it is yall, the very unexpectedly highly requested soft part 2 to this request i got.
How do you think Sebastian would react after getting released/escaping Azkaban and finding out MC was pregnant when he got sent away?
Warings: none. It's pretty fluffy.
Obvious implied Sebastian x MC
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It had been roughly a little over 2 weeks since Sebastian decided to try to be a part of his daughter, MC, and Ominis' little life. But he still couldn't muster to walk up the steps and knock on the door. He was scared they wouldn't want him. That they would be frightened of him. That they wouldn't forgive him for what he'd done.
So he took every fleeting moment possible to talk to his daughter in secret. He knew he should teach her better than to talk to strangers, but he wasn't just some stranger or old family friend. Of course, she didn't know that just yet.
He found himself afraid to tell her, terrified that she would be disappointed this was the father she had been waiting for her whole life. He felt unworthy. That she deserved better than him, despite how desperately he wanted to be that father for her.
So, instead of telling her the truth, he decided to just be her friend. Have little chats with her, still under the guise of being a 'family friend', which wasn't exactly a lie. He just didn't tell her he was technically a part of said family.
He knew how wrong that seemed, but this was his daughter. He had the right to get to know her, and he wasn't ready to insert himself into their lives completely. Not just yet.
Today was different from the rest. Today, little Anne found him while he was sitting at the edge of a dock near their home. It was just far enough away, so he didn't seem suspicious.
"Hey! Im so glad i found you!" She grinned, running up to him
He chuckled "found me?"
"Yes! I've been looking for you all over!" She beamed excitedly."I have something for you"
"What? For me?" He smiled at her softly
"Yeah, it's just a little something I made," she said timidly. "I really hope you like it"
Sebastian watched as she pulled a little ring out of her pocket. She smiled at it fondly and held it out to him. He took it from her with gentle hands.
Upon inspection, he saw that it was beautifully handcrafted with vines and branches. They all swirled around each other so intricately, so perfectly. He was astounded by how well it was made. She was already so talented, and his heart absolutely swelled.
"You.. made this? For me?" Tears pricked and the corners of his eyes, but he quickly blinked them away. Not wanting to have to explain why this was making him so emotional.
"Well, I was out exploring, and I saw some pretty green branches, and for some reason, it made me think of you." she smiled at him warmly, "and then I had this idea to -"
"Anne?! Anne, where are you?"
Sebastian heard a familiar panicked voice cut their conversation short.
He completely froze. Not daring to move and inch as a wave of fear washed over him
"Anne Sallow, where did you run off to?!"
His heart skipped a beat, and he finally turned to look at the source of the voice. Anne Sallow. She gave her his last name.
"There you are! How many times have I told you not to -"
They finally noticed his presence, turning towards him with an unsure look. It was as if they were deciding whether or not it was actually him.
"Sebastian..?"
Sebastian took a moment to gather himself. Going over the words he'd practiced a million times in his head. But none of those words came out. All that did was a simple
"Hello, Ominis."
Hogwarts Legacy Boys react to you getting into a muggle fight
{The characters are 20 years old, MDI and FDI because these are for the gays, and nonbinary.}
Sebastian Sallow [Gryffindor]
"Who does this to you?" You hold the bridge of your nose as Sebastian brings you to the Hospital Wing.
"A boy was getting too cocky to Poppy Sweating, which I can't stand there and watch unfold." You said with a smile which Sebastian couldn't help but smile.
"This is why I love you, my lion."
Ominis Gaunt [Hufflepuff]
"Merlin's beard, you shouldn't do that." You giggled a bit as Ominis held your face while dabbing the wounds. Ominis can be a precious baby.
"But Ominis, one of the Ravenclaw students was getting under my skin when they said that I shouldn't be near you." Ominis stop when you put your hand on his. He can't lose you, you're his significant other
"You're too precious to me, I love you my rose."
Garreth Weasley [Ravenclaw]
"Can you two stop fighting ?!" Garreth looks up from his book of potions and sees you with a cut over your eyebrow. He rushes in to help you to patch up your eyebrow in one of the empty rooms.
"One of the Ravenclaw students told me that I'm dating a Weasley but I don't mind but they said that you have bad luck or something." Garreth halts his movement and gently holds your face, kissing your nose.
"You don't have but for now, you're getting patched up by your lovely boyfriend."
Amit Thakkar [Slytherin]
"You shouldn't be near the fight; you're getting yourself hurt," Amit said as he dragged you to the Hospital Wing. He needs to ask the nurse for help.
"Amit, wait. You don't know what Slytherin's students said about you; I can't watch as they talk badly about you. You know that I have to protect you from them." You stop, pull Amit, and hug him.
"Just be careful, okay?"
If you’re anything like me and thirsty AF for Sebastian Sallow (lord what have they done to me) then boy do I have the fic for you!
Purplesnot is beyond deserving of all of the love and attention and support and you’ll catch me in the comments gassing them up because they more than deserve it.
When I have the time I’m going to write a more coherent review for them! But I will say that it has been a real hot minute since I have read something that I liked this much. Purplesnot has a real gift with words and oh my word has some how managed to get me to like Sebastian even more than I did before! WHICH I DID NOT NEED BY THE WAY (but I also kinda did want it so…)!
If I didn’t have work I would rave for the next several paragraphs over how Purplesnot has managed to make me feel over one pg-13 kiss so far 😭, a touch to the knee, one boy who has fallen hard for our girl Evie (good lord I wish I was Evie right now), someone managed to make every thought and action Sebastian has wayyyy to sexy, and a gift to somehow make almost 22k words feel like 5 and leave you wanting more.
Please support this author who has worked their butt off and deserves some kudos and major love and support (seriously I need more chapters and more Sebastian fics! And, like, any real smut at all, but we’ll fight that battle when we get there 😭😂😭😂)
What are you doing go read this fic!?! And then come and be giddy with me about how AMAZING IT IS and also commiserate about how there’s only three chapters!
Hii! Could I request an Ominis x Fem Ravenclaw reader. Something like the Reader is really interested in the giant squid in the lake, so Ominis tries to sneak her into the Slytherin common room (with the help of sebastian maybe?) So she can get a better look at it
"J'adore les calamars géants<3" "Je t'aime."
Have a Look (O.G)
I always loved the idea of the Giant Squid in the lake, and apparently it was supposed to show up in POA, but they scrapped that script :( Anyway, I like having the reader/Sebastian describe things to Ominis, because I do the same thing to my two blind cats, even though they don't really care, but they're very good at getting around. I hope you enjoy!<3 (there's a meme hidden in here, I laughed a bit after I wrote it and just kept it there)
Tumblr media
 Students chattered around you as you walked with Sebastian and Ominis through the halls, classes over for the day. You held a book you had borrowed from the library about the history of the castle, flipping through the pages as you walked. Ominis stuck close to you, leading you through the halls as you kept your eyes glued to the pages, muttering. “You have plenty of time to look at your book, you know. Perhaps it could wait until we’re no longer walking?” You shook your head, the sound of the pages turning the only response to Ominis’ question. He sighed, instead making conversation with Sebastian. Sebastian chuckled, glancing over at you. “Ravenclaw’s do what they do best, you know.” Ominis sighed, grabbing your sleeve as he pulled you over and closer to him, seconds before you collided with another student.
      “Found it!” You said to yourself, tapping your finger to the page you had flipped to. By now, the three of you had made it outside near the lake, one of the spots you hung around after classes. Sebastian plopped onto the soft grass, sighing as he watched you walk to the dock. Ominis followed you, your footsteps tapping on the wood as you walked to its edge. “I suppose you found another entry about the Giant Squid?” Ominis asked, finding a post, and using it to help him sit down, listening as you let out a hum and sat down next to him. “Indeed. Listen to this!” You said excitedly, reading from one of the entries. “Say’s here that it’s suspected that the Giant Squid is actually Godric Gryffindor!” Ominis let out a scoff, shaking his head. “There’s no way, how old would that make him?” You tapped your chin as you tried to do the math, furrowing your brows. “It was the Tenth Century, so at least a thousand years?” Ominis shook his head as he smiled. “You think a thousand-year-old wizard would want to be a giant squid? What would he even do?” You shrugged, flipping through the pages again.
      “Oh, never mind.” You sighed, closing the book, and placing it beside you. Ominis turned his head, confused. “What’s the matter?” You bit the inside of your cheek as you hung a foot over the water, swinging it slightly. “It said it was unlikely, given that he, you know, died.” Ominis chuckled as he leaned back, the warm rays of the sun tickling his face. “Perhaps the squid was his pet? That would be rather interesting.” You shook your head, looking over the water as small fish swam by, small ripples forming as their fins skimmed the top. “All the books ever say is that its big, they don’t even agree about what colour it is.” You brought your foot back up, crossing your legs and you rested your arms on your knees.
      Ominis sat beside you in silence, thinking. Sebastian had mentioned that there was a spot in the Slytherin common room where you could see the squid as it swam by, but since Ominis wasn’t able to confirm it, he had no idea if Sebastian was joking with him or not. There was also the problem with getting you in; you weren’t a Slytherin. You watched as Ominis’ face changed as he thought to himself, admiring the way he looked in the sun. Sebastian walked up to join you at the edge of the dock, a collection of flat pebbles in his hand that he had collected. “I bet I can skip the farthest.” He said, smirking down at you. You smirked as you got up, grabbing Ominis’ hand and bringing him up with you. “If you think you can beat me, why don’t you place a bet on it?” You teased, grabbing some of the rocks from Sebastian’s hand. He thought for a moment, trying to figure out if it was worth the loss of a Sovereign. “Perhaps. How about, instead of coins, you do some of my assignments for me when I win, Miss Knowledgeable?”  You scoffed in response, nodding as you tossed a stone, skipping it five beats away. “If you win, Sallow. And that’s a big if.” Ominis smiled as he listened to the two of you as you skipped the stones, Sebastian’s voice whining each time yours skipped farther. “Oh, I didn’t say what I wanted when I won!” You paused, thinking. “How about, you have to buy me some sweets next time we go to Hogsmeade?” Sebastian sighed as he nodded, skipping another stone.
      The three of you walked back to the castle, Sebastian’s face sour after you had bested him at skipping stones as you hummed to yourself beside him. Ominis walked between the two of you, still pondering to himself on how to let you see the squid you had become so fascinated with. You began to turn off to the hall that led to the Ravenclaw common room, waving to Sebastian. “I’m off, I’ll see you two tomorrow!” Sebastian waved to you, turning to head to his own common room. Ominis stood, quickly blurting out. “Meet us here around midnight, there’s something you must see.” You looked at him, puzzled. “Midnight? But that’s after hours. Where would we even go?” Ominis shook his head, “You’ll see.” With that, he turned back and walked with Sebastian, who looked at Ominis in confusion.
      “What are you planning?” Sebastian asked, walking into the common room. Ominis walked toward the part of the room that showed the lake, beckoning Sebastian to follow. “You said you could see the giant squid in here, right?” Sebastian looked through the glass as he nodded. “Right, it swims by a lot at night. Why do you ask?” Ominis pointed to the glass, the cool surface smooth against his finger. “She wants to see it, so why not show her?” Ominis said, already set on his plan. Sebastian could only shake his head, “There’s no way she’d get in. Even with the password, someone will spot her.” Ominis smiled as he pointed his finger into Sebastian’s chest. “Only if she looked like a Ravenclaw. Most will be sleeping, anyway. We can give her an extra set of robes to change into so we can sneak her in, pretty simple.” Sebastian smiled, feeling that his devious actions had rubbed off on his friend after all these years. “Since when did you get so daring, Ominis?” He shrugged, turning to head back to the couch. “She loves the thing, why not let her see it when we basically have it in a giant tank?” Sebastian nodded, following Ominis as they busied themselves until the time ticked to midnight.
      You waited anxiously outside the staircase, shivering slightly as a draft passed by. You wracked your brain for an explanation for why you were to meet the boys so late. You sighed as you shifted your footing, looking around for any sign of Ominis. A small light appeared at the end of the hall, and you watched as two shadows made their way over to you. You quickly ducked behind a pillar and held your breath, not wanting a professor to catch you sneaking around after hours all by yourself. “Y/n?” Ominis whispered, appearing beside you. You jumped; eyes wide as you turned your head to be face to face with the boy. Ominis felt the air shift as you jumped and the small puff of air that left your mouth as you gasped, taking a moment before realizing that he was too close. “Sorry, I didn’t know where you were.” He apologized, taking a few steps back. You settled your breathing, placing a hand to his shoulder to steady yourself. “It’s fine, just scared me a bit is all.” Sebastian popped up beside Ominis, a sly smile on his lips as he held a bundle of robes, causing you to jump slightly again. Ominis smiled as he felt your grip tighten on his shoulder, opting to take hold of your hand and leading you away from the stairs.
      “What’s that you’ve got there, Sebastian?” You asked, eyeing the bundle in his arms. Sebastian smiled as he pushed the robe into your free hand, “You’ve been sorted into Slytherin tonight, time to get dressed.” You frowned, looking between the two boys. “Why?” Ominis shook his head as he let go of your hand, tugging at robe you were currently wearing. “No time, just hurry and change.” Sebastian watched, amused, as your face flushed, quickly taking of the blue and black robe; with the help of Ominis. You quickly slipped into the new robe, the green becoming a stark contrast to what you usually wore. “Now what?” You asked, watching as Sebastian took your original robe and hid it behind the pillar, pointing to it so you knew where it was. Ominis grabbed your hand once again, leading you down the hall they had come from.
      “Now, you need to remember this word, ok? It’s important.” Sebastian stated, and you nodded, confused. “The door needs a password, or else you can’t get in. At the moment, it’s Blighters, so don’t forget it.” You nodded, repeating the password to yourself. “Blighters, got it. But why do I need a password?” You asked, furrowing your brows. Ominis chuckled as he walked listening to Sebastian sigh. “Aren’t you supposed to be in Ravenclaw? Smart?” You nodded, frowning. “We’re sneaking you into the Slytherin common room, obviously.” You sighed, shaking your head. “I was sort of hoping you weren’t going to say that. We could get into serious trouble, you know.” You stated, looking around as you walked. Sebastian scoffed, “Obviously. Look, it wasn’t even my idea this time. You can thank Smitten over there for that.” You looked at Ominis, who turned his head and nodded, a slight pink dusting his cheeks. You playfully slapped Sebastian’s arm, ignoring the nickname he had given Ominis. “You’ve corrupted our boy!”
      You walked up to the entrance of the Slytherin common room, eyes wide as you looked at the details around it. Sebastian and Ominis stood beside you, watching in amusement. “I just say the password then?” You asked, turning to Ominis, who nodded. You took a breath, watching the snakes that had settled around the door frame. “Blighters.” The two snakes began to move, and you watched in amazement as they seemed to just slither along the wall, revealing the door to the Slytherin common room. You smiled as you peaked inside, unsure if you were able to walk in. Sebastian walked in first, turning and gesturing for you to follow. You looked over to Ominis, who in turn grabbed your hand and led you in.
      You spun around, taking in the details that surrounded you. Although it felt like a cellar, it felt cozy at the same time, the warm light from a nearby fireplace casted soft shadows on your face. “This place looks amazing! And you get to live here?” You breathed, walking over to paintings and artworks on the wall. Ominis smiled as he nodded while Sebastian began to walk to a couch. “Yep, coziest place in the castle, if you ask me.” He said as he plopped himself on the cushions. Ominis walked over to you, grabbing your sleeve and leading you to another part of the room. “Have a look at this.” He said, bringing you up to the window of water. You gasped, watching as fish swam by, the lake just on the other side of the thick glass. Ominis sat down in one of the many seats beside the glass, often used to observe the life of the lake. You followed and sat beside him, still watching the water as the life inside buzzed about. “This is amazing!” You breathed, a large smile growing on your lips. Ominis smiled in return, listening to the soft gasps of amazement you let out each time a fish swam close to the glass. You turned to him; eyes wide as you thought about earlier.
      “Can you see the squid from in here?” You asked, almost in a whisper. Ominis nodded and smiled as he gestured to the glass. “I remembered Sebastian mentioning it, so I wanted to sneak you in so you could see it. It usually passes around this time, actually.” You smiled as you wrapped your arms around Ominis’ neck, a string of thanks leaving your lips as you held him tightly. Ominis was caught off guard, but quickly wrapped his arms around you in response, smiling as he pressed his face into the crook of your neck. Sebastian smiled as he watched, glancing over to the lake as a tentacle rose up. “There it is, y/n! Look!” He shouted, pointing at the glass. You released Ominis and quickly made your way to the glass window, watching in awe as the squid slowly rose in the water.
      “Ominis, come here!” You shouted, grabbing for his hand as you brought him over. Ominis looked at you confused, unable to see what you were seeing. “It’s giant! Bound to be at least two meters! And the books were all right, it’s just different colours!” You described the squid to Ominis, who began to form a picture of it in his head as you continued. “It’s a mix of colours, it’s kind of red, maybe pink? But it has spots where it’s white, and its arms are different colours too!” The squid continued to swim around, its long arms propelling it around as it seemingly performed for you. “I can see its beak too! It looks the size of Sebastian’s head.” “Are you saying I have a big head?”  Ominis chuckled as the image grew clearer as you spoke. You watched as the squid turned, showing off one of its eyes. You gasped, watching as it flickered from yellow to a pale green, one that matched Ominis’ eyes. “Ominis! It just copied your eye colour! That’s amazing!” You grabbed his hand in excitement, watching as the squid placed a tentacle to the glass, its suckers pressed against the glass, almost demonstrating to you.
      Ominis felt his face heat up as you squeezed his hand, excitement lacing your voice as you began to recall information from one of the books you had read. “Apparently, it’s sort of…domesticated. Like it was a pet a long time ago. One of the authors said they fell of a boat in the lake once, and that the squid pushed them back to the surface and to the boat, like it was helping them.” Ominis nodded, listening to every word you spoke. Sebastian had retreated back to the couch after you had made fun of his head, having seen the squid multiple times since he was sorted into Slytherin.
      You watched the squid for a few more minutes, until it slowly swam away in search of food. You yawned, leaning your head onto Ominis’ shoulder for support. “I’ll walk you back to your common room, so you don’t fall asleep on the way there.” He offered, and you nodded, making your way back to the door, waving to Sebastian. The two of you walked down the halls, silent yawns escaping your lips every now and then. “I apologize for keeping you up so late,” Ominis said, breaking the silence. You shook your head as you smiled, grabbing his hand and giving it a gentle squeeze. “It’s all right. You let me see the giant squid, and I loved it.” You had made it to the staircase leading up to your common room, and you picked up your robes from the ground. You changed into them and offered the Slytherin robe back to Ominis, who shook his head. “I have other robes; you should keep it in case I sneak you in again.” You smiled as your cheeks heated up, letting out a soft thank you.
      The two of you stood there in silence for a moment, unable to turn and walk away from each other. You looked down at your feet as you thought back to the squid, thinking about how you may have never seen it if it wasn’t for Ominis. Quickly, you looked back up at him, placing a hand on his shoulder. Ominis’ brows furrowed in confusion at the sudden touch, but quickly replaced it with shock as you softly pressed your lips to his cheek. You smiled against his skin as you whispered a final “thank you,” before pulling away. You watched in amusement as he was left speechless, fiddling with his sleeve as he tried to find the words to say. “Again, some time.” He muttered, and you smiled, leaning over, and placing another kiss on his cheek before heading up the steps. “Some time soon, I hope.”
In the Light of Care
The Aftermath of In The Shadow Of the Study. Aesop Sharp finds the new fifth-year half unconscious in the Slytherin dungeons following an adventure gone wrong.
Shout out to my ever-fabulous partner in crime @tea-withjamandbread
I have a love-hate relationship with Sebastian, on one hand, I love him, on the other, he is an irresponsible blinded hot-headed dumbass.
And then I have a love-love relationship with Aesop, who despite knowing you are going to give him a heart attack one of these days is never gonna give you up, never gonna let you down, never gonna run around and desert you.
In the Light of Care (5.7k words)
tw: descriptions of pain, vomiting
You felt godawful all over. Ominis and Sebastian left you alone a while ago. You put up a brave face for them, but truth be told, you've never felt this terrible before. Your vision was blurry and all of your muscles were still cramping up with a pain that burned so much, you were certain it was burning your veins, dissolving you from the inside like acid. It was only when you were alone in that blasted corridor that you allowed yourself to fall down onto your bum, tears escaping your eyes and falling down freely. You tried to stretch as if that would help. You felt your body was inflamed, fever settling into your skin. You were sweating like mad and it took everything within you not to scream, not to sob, not to let your dinner travel up from your stomach and out of your mouth.
You were glad not to have learned the Cruciatus curse when Sebastian offered to teach you. However, you supposed, that even if you had learnt it, you would never ever use it. Even though the poachers, the goblins, and the dark wizards you've often engaged in combat were absolute scum, nobody deserved to have this cast on them. It was terribly unfair, terribly cruel. This wasn't offence-defence, it wasn't about prowess, or skill, or just plain luck. It was terror. There wasn't a right side of the wand to be on when it came to this. Both sides were horrible.
You curled in onto yourself. Even after you broke down and onto your knees before the boys, Sebastian seemed to disregard it, being only interested in that blasted scriptorium. He was your friend and you loved him, but at that moment... At that moment you hated him, at that moment he was your tormentor. And he didn't even feel bad about it. You wanted to shake his stupid head, to scream at him, to tell him that he was going to find nothing in the scriptorium but more dark magic, more pain. Salazar Slytherin was a vain and cruel man, why on earth would he have made a cure for something, when it was only agony he wanted to create? It was pointless, and foolish and dangerous to have come here and you regretted it dearly as you tried to bury your pain, keep your tears contained.
Yet, at the same time, you were glad that you went with them. Because if you hadn't, either Ominis or Sebastian would be forced to cast the curse on one another. And Ominis wouldn't, you knew now. And Merlin knows what would've happened to their friendship then if Ominis' best friend cast that curse on him, the very curse because of which he now had no family. So you chose to power through it, you put up a brave face.
It almost crumbled immediately after. Sebastian looked like a child on Christmas, looking at everything in the scriptorium, while you were still cowering on the floor. A warm hand landed on your shoulder. On any other occasion, you might have welcomed it, but now the hand burned you, made the already aching muscles hurt even more, and you winced. "Are you alright?" Ominis asked, sounding just as close to crying as you were. And though you were still in agony, you did what felt like an Herculean feat, and put your own hand on top of his and squeezed. "Alright," you said simply. You really should stop lying to your friends.
You felt horrible for making Ominis go through this. When he asked the two of you to swear to never ever engage with dark magic after that endeavour was done, you agreed with him wholeheartedly. Mentally, that is, as you couldn't speak by then. You knew you had to apologise to him later, make it up to him.
You wondered who would lose first, your consciousness or your stomach. What were you to do? You didn't bring any Wiggenweld potion with you, because you didn't think you might need it. You envied the boys now for being Slytherins, the comfort of their common room so close, while yours was so many flights of stairs away. There was no way you'd be able to crawl all the way there. There was no way you'd be able to crawl anywhere, not Ravenclaw Tower, not the Room of Requirement, not the Hospital wing. Now that you thought of it, you really shouldn't go to the Hospital wing anyway, the questions Nurse Blainey would have would only get yourself and your friends in more trouble.
As you sat and thought, your stomach finally lost its battle. You keeled over and promptly emptied your stomach on the stony floor. You felt the bile burn your throat, your eyes were losing focus. A voice came from somewhere far away. Annoyed at first, but as it got closer, you heard genuine concern. You were dry-heaving when a hand - larger than Ominis' - grasped your shoulder and forced you to turn. It didn't help your nausea at the very least, but seeing as you've already vomited all of the contents of your stomach out, you thankfully didn't throw up into the potions master's face. His striking dark eyes were panicked, his jaw hard, and he was kneeling next to you, which most likely did nothing for his leg. You would've attempted to speak, but your vision got dark and it dragged you down into the abyss.
You fell in and out of consciousness for a while. At one point, you looked down, professor Sharp still at your side but something was different. The smell of vomit was gone. You looked down at your robes and they were entirely clean. So was the floor. It was dark again. You saw professor Sharp's face, the underside of it, to be exact. He looked worried to bits. You felt movement and saw the surroundings change around Sharp's head. You felt strong arms underneath your back and legs. You wanted to comfort him, to tell him you were fine, that he needn't worry for you. Everything went black again before you managed to do so. Before the darkness consumed you, you felt the prickle of his chin on your index.
You woke on a bed after, and this time you stayed awake. You weren't in the Hospital wing, that was for sure. You weren't in your dorm or the Room of Requirement either, however, and you felt rather disoriented by that. Where else would you be, where else was a cot you'd use? When your eyes began focusing once more and your brain regained control of higher functions, you actually took in your surroundings. The air was cool, chilly almost, and it felt like heaven on your still feverish skin. There were shelves around the room, and in the middle of it stood a slightly curved desk. You were in professor Sharp's office.
The door to your left opened and the man in question came into focus. "I am very cross with you," he said, though his voice lacked any actual cut. He sat on your cot, and you now noticed he had a phial in his hand. It contained some dark liquid, still bubbling and looking utterly awful. "Drink," he said as he pushed a hand under the nape of your neck and lifted your head. He brought the phial to your lips and poured it into your mouth. You wanted to resist, the potion being foul enough to cause a dangerous churn in your stomach again, but you were so tired and the professor was unyielding.
You panted heavily after you swallowed the last drop, your body trying to bring it up again, but then you began to feel... Comfort. The pain was being flushed from your body. You didn't notice when professor Sharp grabbed your hand, but you felt his thumb stroking the back of it now. You looked up at him and regretted it immediately. He looked so tired. Once more, you unknowingly reached to touch his cheek. He startled when you did, yet almost right away closed one of his hands around your own.
"You know, I often say that the students will make me go grey prematurely, but I swear, you will make me go bald before you graduate," he said humourlessly. "Either you or your dear friends, Mr Sallow and Mr Gaunt. They told me what happened. Not everything, but the main gist of it. I've half a mind to give them both detention for the rest of their time here for leaving you the way they did. I've half a mind to give you detention as well for getting your stupid self into this, for not speaking up that you're unwell," he paused, his voice quivering slightly, "so clever, the lot of you, yet so incredibly stupid.”
The professor sighed then: “Look, I think I’m really starting to think I understand who you are - a good person who’s always willing to help her friends, which is, of course, noble of you. However, someone should finally tell you that you don’t have to insert yourself into every potentially life-threatening situation for them. In fact, as a Ravenclaw, you should be, and I believe you are, clever enough to talk them out of entering such situations themselves, which is just as good.”
You wanted to tell him that quite the number of these situations you didn't expect to be as dangerous as they turned out to be, and you were literally thrust into many of them. Not to mention there were simply some things you had to do…
But you didn’t say a single word. Not only did Professor Fig specifically ask you to keep quiet about your ancient magic abilities (which were the reason you got into these situations in the first place), but you knew that if professor Sharp knew… Well, he’d most likely try to get you to stop. Something that was absolutely unthinkable.
Sharp was watching you like a hawk, obviously trying to see if he could find an answer to at least one of his no doubt plenty of questions fleetingly appearing in your eyes. The feeling of comfort the potion he gave you turned into mild dizziness again, and you felt a sudden need to sit up. The potions master seemed to have anticipated as such because he was helping you into a sitting position not a second later, his strong hands having no problem lifting your upper body up from the cot. You were glad for his help, as you honestly felt like you were suddenly made of solid lead.
"Could you kindly enlighten me as to why you mad lot would even enter such a place?" He asked after the dizzy spell went away again. You still felt exhausted, but decided it was easier to answer his questions now, especially if he let you off the hook afterwards.
"Sebastian's sister… She's ill. Well, cursed. But you probably know that sir," you rasped out, wrapping your arms around you to battle the coolness of his office. "Indeed I do," answered the professor, "truly awful what happened to her."
He actually sounded remorseful, but also appeared to have lost himself in his head a little bit: "So what, were you searching for a cure down there? I can assure you, you will find no cures to any ailments under Salazar Slytherin's name, it's not one of the things he was famous for… And unless Mungo Bohnam himself left a little scriptorium of his own here, I am afraid you won't find Miss Sallow's cure in these corridors at all."
The teacher suddenly looked ten years older than he usually looked. You didn't know just how old he was, your guess was perhaps mid-forties, but then again, this and his previous job may have caused him to age prematurely. You realised that he and Anne were in quite similar situations, and seeing as he, an adult, and an experienced former auror was not able to find a cure for his leg, he didn't give Anne too many chances either.
It was all rather horrible, you thought. You've only met Anne for a while, but she seemed like a genuinely sweet person you could see yourself being friends with. And professor Sharp? Well, he was very different from the teachers you used to have before you came to Hogwarts. In the best way possible. He was strict, like they were, but also fair. He was tough and looked like a man not to be messed with. He administered both criticism and praise where they were due, and was very honest and open about everything. You had to admit that you enjoyed both the potion class, and his extra lessons to help you catch up to your classmates.
It was a little alarming to see a man who normally radiated authority so… down.
"I think," you said after several minutes, "I think Sebastian is trying to find… the curse itself. Because when he does, finding a cure should be easier…"
"His sister was cursed by a goblin though, no? What makes you think you'd find something about goblin curses down there?"
"I don't… I don't know. I just wanted to help Sebastian."
The potions master sighed heavily, tapping his healthy foot on the stone floor, and you thought you heard him utter something about you being 'so bloody loyal, it’s a wonder you’re not a Hufflepuff.'
"And did you find anything?" He asked after a while, once more fixing you with an intense expression.
"No, not a thing, sir. Some old books and scrolls, half-eaten by rats and other vermin, some egocentric busts and statues of Slytherin himself, a goblet of something I almost drank after… after the torturing curse, because I was so thirsty, but then I realised that the cup's been sitting there for maybe 900 years at least and it might not be wise."
"See, Miss (L/N), you're learning the art of 'not dying' quickly. Indeed, you should not drink anything that's been standing in a cup for 900 years," Sharp said in a deeply sarcastic voice, and he looked like he wanted to throw his hands up in the air. He calmed himself down with several deep breaths: "And that's it?"
"That's it."
Hold on… Something was amiss. What was it? There was one book that wasn't eaten away by any creepy crawlies, wasn't there? A book…
"Are you perfectly certain?" the teacher asked once more, watching you intently.
Should you tell him about the spellbook Sebastian picked up? Did he and Ominis tell him about it? Sharp wouldn't be asking you if you found anything of interest if he knew about the spellbook, would he? It was at the tip of your tongue when you remembered:
'It’s a personal spellbook of one of the founders of Hogwarts! There’s got to be something in there that will let me reverse the curse! Anne will be cured!'
Sebastian sounded like a child on Christmas when he said that, all the while Ominis was pale as a ghost and you were trying not to tremble too much from Crucio’s pain. In the brunet’s voice was something that was just so absolutely convinced that he was right. And what is he was? What if he could really cure his sister with some counter-curse from the book? Maybe then you could also use it and help heal Sharp. What if Sharp took it away in fear that you may use the book for wrong, or that the book itself had a curse put on it?
Should you tell him?
Your mouth opened and you took a deep breath. A feeling in your chest was telling you that you were signing a deal with the devil, but the 'yes' that rolled from your lips sounded perfectly calm and sincere.
And there it was. You lied to a teacher who told you explicitly that he hated it when somebody lied to him. But you decided you were doing so out of good intentions. Like when you kept your mouth shut about ancient magic.
He sighed once more: "Alright then… I hardly think that you'd tell me if your goal was to become a dark witch, so I suppose this will have to do."
"I can assure you, sir, that's not the case," you replied weakly before you could stop yourself, "I hate those."
"Oh," Sharp asked, his interest seemingly peaked again, "meet many dark witches?" You cursed yourself inwardly, the last thing you needed was for him to probe at you even more: "I've met a few, sir. But it was enough for me to decide that I hated them…"
The professor's eyes were as sharp as his name, and you felt his gaze burning holes into you. Finally, he sat back and crossed his arms over his chest, deep in thought. And then he spoke again, his voice softer this time: "What is it you're not telling me? What is it that causes the bruises and the cuts on your face I see each time you come back from 'a visit to Hogsmeade'? And do not try telling me that you crashed into a shrub or fell off your broom, this excuse can only work on me so many times…"
The professor looked genuinely concerned. He was the first professor to question your occasionally banged appearance, the only one who insisted you tell him over and over again. "Are you in any kind of trouble?" He continued, "Because if you are, just tell me, and I promise I'll do my best to help you."
You put your hands on your face.
"Why can't you tell me?"
You did not answer. You didn't even take your hands away. The office was overtaken by silence. It must have been after curfew, as you heard no sounds from the corridors beyond the potion classroom. After what felt like hours, Sharp sighed once more. "Despite what some students may say about me, I am actually not some heartless monster. I won't make you tell me by force. But please, please, Miss (L/N), can you promise me one thing?"
It took a while, but you cautiously lowered your hands to look at him. He looked tired once more, but he didn't drop his gaze from you for a single second: "If you start feeling you're in over your head, if you feel like you need help, be it anything you're dealing with, please... Come to me. Even if it's just for a phial of Skele-Gro…"
Aesop Sharp was a good man, you decided, and a minute later, you found yourself nodding your head.
"Good," he said.
"May I be dismissed, sir?"
"Dismissed? Lass, the only place you're leaving here for is the Hospital wing! And given the nature of the curse that was cast on you, and the caster, I rather think that you wouldn't like that, would you?" You grimaced. Damn. You truly did not need more attention drawn to your little adventure into Slytherin's scriptorium. Obviously having no other options, you carefully lowered yourself until you were lying down again.
"Do you need anything? Food, water, are you warm enough?" Asked the teacher then, his voice softer once more. "I'm alright, thank you, sir," you replied and closed your eyes. They were so heavy, you felt like you might not open them again.
"Sleep, Miss (L/N)."
When you woke up, you felt disoriented once more, and it took you a few seconds to realise where you were, and what sort of events led up to this situation. Looking around the office, illuminated by the faint morning light coming from the window behind professor Sharp’s desk, you saw the man himself sitting in his chair, sound asleep. His hands were loosely folded in his lap, his leg was propped up on a little footstool he must’ve conjured up for himself, as you’ve never seen it there before (could teachers, unlike students, conjure things in Hogwarts outside of the Room of Requirement? Most likely, how else would he have gotten your cot in here?), and his head was hanging to the side. The silence of the room was occasionally cut through by a snore from the teacher.
He looked quite a few years younger while he slept, the line between his eyebrows gone, his face relaxed and open, much softer than it normally was. You supposed he was not at all bad-looking when he wasn’t currently giving Garreth Weasley the snarl of Chimaera.
You lay there, panic slowly creeping in. Was he going to tell the Headmaster about your little adventure to the Scriptorium? Maybe professor Weasley? Fig? Has he already told them? Were you in trouble?
You shortly considered sneaking past the professor and away into your dorm. You were itching to have a nice hot bath and change into a different set of robes. You fainty remembered that Sharp cast a cleaning charm on them, yet they still felt grimy on your body, because what you remembered perfectly was the pain you went through in them. At that moment when Sebastian cast Crucio on you, it felt like your very clothes were choking and burning you, like they were covered in salt and your skin under them was scratched and cut up. You decided to burn them the first chance you got and get a new set from Mr Hill.
Once more you thought about making an attempt to leave but ultimately decided against it. The man was an ex-Auror for crying out loud, there’s no way he wouldn’t wake up if you as much as made a single step from the bed. He probably put a ward on it to alert him were you to get up. Not to mention it would solve absolutely nothing. He knew of the Scriptorium, and he knew of the Cruciatus curse. The only thing you’d achieve if you tried to sneak past him would probably be angering him.
And so you stayed put, reclining on the cot. It was quite comfortable, which was something you couldn’t appreciate much most mornings. Even when you didn’t have classes to attend, you rarely allowed yourself to indulge in sleeping in, much less just lazying around in bed after you woke up. There was always something to do, somebody to help, someone to run an errand for, a beast to rescue, a potion to brew, a plant in need of fertilising or harvesting, a hot spot of ancient magic, or a Merlin trial to solve. You were a busy woman, you didn’t have time to lie around. And yet, as you did, you had to admit that you felt more well-rested than you had in weeks.
Professor Sharp on the other hand you thought couldn’t be very comfortable. You were never able to fall asleep sitting up, even during long hours spent on the train when you and your family went for a holiday to St Ives, and the first class coupe you used had seating that was much more comfortable than his chair seemed. But then again, maybe there was some sort of cushioning charm placed on it to make it comfier.
But then again, maybe not, you thought as a quiet but obviously pained groan replaced the professor’s snore suddenly. “Oh, Merlin’s saggy left-...” growled professor Sharp, his lips forming into a thin line and and the wrinkle returning to between his brows. His hand disappeared into the insides of his robes and searched around in the breast pocket for a bit, before resurfacing with a vial of green liquid. He pulled the cork out with his teeth and gulped the potion down in a single swallow, breathing heavily before his muscles finally relaxed once more.
The potions master opened his eyes, dark circles underneath them indicating that he himself didn’t rest quite as well as you. “Miss (L/N),” he said his voice rough from his slumber, “please know that I hope that you won’t get yourself into such a situation again not for only your sake, but for my own as well. I am entirely too old and too tired for sleeping arrangements like these.” Your quiet apology went unanswered.
A few minutes passed with the teacher having closed his eyes once more, and you would’ve thought that he had fallen asleep again, had his hand not been slowly tapping on the armrest. “How do you feel?” he asked without opening his eyes, and you were actually quite glad for that. “Much better, sir,” was your answer, “thank you… For taking care of me.” His dark eyes opened and bore into your own, their intensity nearly enough to make a chill run down your spine: “That’s not what you’re supposed to thank me for. Or did you think I’d just leave you there, half collapsed in your own sick? Is that what you think of me?” You cringed, your eyes screwing shut.
After a few moments of silence, Sharp sighed. “I’m sorry,” he said quietly, “I suppose I am a bit… grumpier than usual because of my aching body. And while I wouldn’t have to suffer the consequences of sleeping in a chair were it not for your little suicidal adventure, it is not your fault that I am an old man…” “You’re not old… sir,” you replied, not really knowing why, you just… you just didn’t like seeing him so resigned. You respected the professor a lot, and you were confident that despite his bad leg, he was very much a force to be reckoned with.
He sighed again: “Be that as it may, know that I would not leave you there. I’m responsible for each and every one of my students. The official job description is teaching you lot the art of potion-making, but every member of staff is sworn to do everything in their power to protect the students. Yesterday evening’s events mean that we have failed in this aspect. And while failure is undoubtedly a part of the learning process, I certainly do not take it very well.
“Now, you shouldn’t be grateful to me because I took care of you, as absolutely any and every one of your professors would’ve done the same. What you should, however, be grateful for is the fact that I kept your little adventure to myself. And I am still not convinced I am doing the right thing doing so.  The fact that Mr Sallow used the Cruciatus curse on you is very concerning. The fact he even knows the curse is concerning! However, as he used it to get all of you out of that place, I might be able to forgive it. I plan to have a long talk with him about it, however. Being friends with Mr Gaunt, he should know better than to meddle with dark arts. He’s a bright young man, I don’t want him to end up in Azkaban because of youthful stupidity. You’re all terribly clever, it’d be an awful waste to lose you because you decided to bite off more than you can chew. And entering a place built by a man who was a single Unforgivable away from being considered a dark wizard is absolutely more than a fifth-year can chew, no matter how capable.
“That said, I offer you a deal - you tell me all about this excursion of yours, beginning with the location of the entrance, so that I can later make sure it is no longer accessible to anyone, followed by a detailed description of the events that transpired so that I can make a clearer picture about the whole situation, and I in return keep it all to myself. Mind, you and your friends will be scrubbing cauldrons by hand for the following few evenings so that I can make sure you’re staying out of trouble and not, for whatever reason, doing something as insane as going back.” You opened your mouth to protest, but before you had the chance to even take a breath, the professor spoke again: “You were mad enough to go there in the first place, how do I know you’re not mad enough to return, even with all that happened?
“Well, Miss, what do you say? Do we have a deal?”
And so you told him. You told him about Ominis’ aunt and her disappearance within the centuries-old Scriptorium. You told him about a passage that could only be opened by one who can speak the tongue of snakes, therefore making the very first of the rooms a certain deathtrap for anyone and everyone who is not of Slytherin’s descent. You told him of statues that would strike as real snakes would if one took too much time solving their riddles. And finally, about learning of Noctua’s heart-wrenching and untimely demise at the hands of Salazar’s cruel trial. You then described the Scriptorium itself in length, leaving out the part where you found Slytherin’s spellbook.
“So there is another entrance?” asked Sharp, his arms crossed over his chest. He was listening to you attentively, only occasionally asking you to specify or fill in a few things. “Yes, professor,” you replied, “however, I don’t know whether it can be accessed from outside as well.” The potions master thought for a bit: “It would be good to retrieve the poor woman’s remains from there so that she can be given a proper burial, but I do not want to distress Mr Gaunt even more than he already was when I spoke with him yesterday by asking him to go back with me, not to mention bearing witness to yet another instance of the Cruciatus curse, so it would be convenient if the room could be accessed from the other side.”
You bit at your lip nervously. “With all due respect, professor Sharp,” you spoke then, your voice quiet, “Ominis said his aunt and the rest of his family weren’t exactly on the best of terms. I’m not sure if they would give her a proper funeral.” “They may not, but your friend Ominis might… Well, best not to trouble the young man even more now, he seems to have a lot on his mind as is.”
“Will you… will you keep this whole thing to yourself, sir?”
“I don’t make promises I don’t intend to keep, Miss (L/N). You told me everything I wanted to know, and I will keep my end of the bargain. I must, however, still discuss with Mr Sallow about his knowledge and uses of Unforgivable curses. There are some curses whose usage could perhaps be excused in some cases, but when we start to do so with the Unforgivables, we’re on our merry way back into the Dark Ages, when wizards and witches would calmly cast the Imperius curse at anyone who was merely mildly inconveniencing them. These curses were outlawed for a reason. Please, tell me that your classmate didn’t teach it to you…”
You squirmed in your seat. Sebastian did offer to teach it to you, but you said no. Should you tell Sharp? No, no… Best not to, Seb was in enough trouble as it was, no need to make it worse.
“He did not. And after I felt what it can do, I know it’s for the best… Nobody should know a spell like that! It’s so… unfair. It’s like… It’s like bringing a rifle into a sword fight.”
“That is a very good comparison, Miss,” said the potions master, “and you best never forget that. These spells are like poison, they’re unnatural, and each one tears away at your very humanity. I know that you wish to remain loyal to your friends, and I, once more, praise you for that. But I implore you to discourage your classmate from using such a spell again, even if it’s for a ‘good thing’. The road to hell is paved with good intentions.”
You nodded solemnly. You truly hoped there never came a time in which you’d have to once more witness the foul spell, or any of the other two Unforgivables. Sebastian wasn’t that kind of boy - yes, he did teach you one unsanctioned spell once before, but it wasn’t exactly a dark spell. If you were honest, you used it more during Merlin trials than against adversaries.
You hoped you were doing the right thing still, not bringing up the book your friend your friend left the Scriptorium with.
Aesop Sharp watched you intently, possibly hoping that you’d perhaps shed some more light on the situation, but when several minutes passed in absolute silence, he cleared his throat, stretching himself once more. “Now…” he said, “I don’t know how about you, Miss, but I could eat a Hippogriff right now.” Despite yourself, and despite the dark thoughts swirling about in your head, you actually giggled: “If you do, sir, make sure it’s not white with orange eyes, that one’s a friend of mine.”
The professor scoffed: “Friends with a Hippogriff, all the travelling merchants around the Highlands, and two of Slytherin’s three biggest troublemakers. I will need to keep a closer eye on you. This isn’t a joke, by the way, I do intend to keep an eye on you - the things Fig tells me combined with what all I hear about you doing is quite concerning.”
You gulped. You knew he’d find out about everything, sooner or later. After all, even professor Weasley was more than a little suspicious about your activities, but you managed to evade her questions by performing brilliantly in class and helping everybody you encountered. Professor Sharp, a former Auror, would certainly have no problem finding out the truth in the end.
There was only one solution. You had to work faster and harder, You had to carry on with the Keepers’ trials, and you had to stop Ranrok from opening war upon the Wizarding world. And ideally not die in the process. And, hopefully, then Sharp would understand. Maybe he’d even forgive you for the secrecy and the lies.
The teacher sighed and ran his hand over his face.
“What I said yesterday stands. If you need help, you know where to find me. I won’t turn you away. I promise…”
He stood then, towering over your form, still reclining upon the cot.
“Come on, you’ll tag along with me to the Great Hall, so I can make sure your encounter yesterday didn’t leave any lasting effects. In case it has, perhaps your fellow students will find the sight of you limping next to me amusing.”
You grinned. Despite everything, you truly appreciated Sharp’s sense of humour: “Very well, sir.”
Thank you so much for reading, I hope you enjoyed the story. As always, you can find this fic and all of my other works over on my AO3
I am always very grateful for feedback 🥰
The Devil Doesn't Bargain
Word Count: 4.5k
Themes: angst, very brief mention of abuse? Imelda is a piece of work in this but she means well
Warnings: Potential spoilers for HL. All characters are 18+ in their 7th year of Hogwarts.
If anyone’s curious this song here is the one I had on repeat while writing this
Tumblr media
Y/N twirled the quill she was holding, her work forgotten in front of her as she looked across the library to where Sebastian was sitting a few tables away. He was frowning as he looked between his textbook and the parchment he was scribbling on, deep in thought as he worked on whichever essay they had been assigned. He looked more tired than usual and Y/N couldn’t help but roam her eyes over him carefully, looking out for any other signs that everything was not okay.
Their friendship has never quite been the same after the untimely death of Solomon Sallow in their fifth year. Despite not turning Sebastian in (the easiest decision Y/N had ever made in her life) and his reassurance that he was glad they were friends and that she had come to Hogwarts, he had begun to pull away in the beginning of their sixth year. It started slowly; from passing on visits to Hogsmeade and skipping the odd class because he wasn’t feeling well to barely acknowledging her when he walked by her in corridors, not even a nod in greeting. There was only so much she could do - so much she could take - before Y/N began to retreat as well, opting instead to spend more time with Ominis, Imelda and Poppy.
“Don’t do this.” Imelda kicked Y/N under the table gently and she reluctantly tore her gaze away from Sebastian to send a glare at the raven-haired girl.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Y/N rolled her eyes and flicked through her textbook, skimming the page for the information she needed. If she hadn’t been studiously avoiding the eyes of her friends she would have noticed the look the two girls shared followed by Ominis’ quiet sigh.
“Don’t play stupid, it doesn’t suit you.”
“I see we’re back to the tough love route,” Ominis said, the corners of his mouth twitching up in amusement as his fingers trailed across the braille in his book. “Do you think this discussion will end in throwing objects again? I don’t like my odds of ducking to avoid Y/N’s inkpot.” He turned his head in Poppy’s direction, who laughed quietly even though she was watching Imelda and Y/N nervously.
“I would much rather we didn’t discuss this at all, actually,” Y/N couldn’t help but look over at Sebastian again, if only just to piss Imelda off, but was surprised to see him looking back. She offered him a small smile in greeting, her stomach flipping pleasantly when he smiled back. She quickly turned back to her work, her leg bouncing under the table in elation. Apart from occasionally meeting her eyes as they passed each other in between classes, that was the most interaction she and Sebastian had shared in months.
“I know that look in your eye,” Imelda pointed her quill at Y/N, her eyes narrowing. “Do I need to remind you of what happened the last time you thought he was coming back around?” Y/N stifled an annoyed sigh and bit the inside of her cheek, if only to stop herself from lashing out. She knew Imelda was right, knew she was only being so firm because she cared. “Sebastian Sallow doesn’t care about anyone other than himself.”
“He cares about Anne,” Y/N muttered petulantly. Imelda kicked her ankle again in reprimand and Y/N hissed in pain. “Fuck, stop kicking me!”
“Stop being stupid then!” Imelda leant forward, her voice lowering considerably.
“You’re ridiculous.”
“You’re better than this. He’s ruthless, he’s a liar. He’s abusive.”
“Sebastian would never hurt me.” If looks could kill then Imelda Reyes would be ten feet under. Y/N knew what her friend was saying came from a well-meaning place, but how dare she. How dare she speak about Sebastian that way - speak about her that way. She wasn’t an idiot any more than Sebastian was the devil Imelda made him out to be.
“Again, you mean?” Imelda snapped. Y/N sucked in a sharp breath at her words, at the sudden reminder of the agony the cruciatus curse had caused. Ominis stilled at the witch’s words, his amused expression dropping as he stopped reading his book. Poppy and Imelda shared a look between them. Y/N and Ominis never told them everything that had happened in their fifth year but they had worked out more than enough.
“You don’t know anything.” Y/N leant forward to hiss the words at her friend.
“I know you don’t want to let go.” Imelda crossed her arms and leant back in her chair, a smug expression on her face. “People talk, Y/N. Sallow’s fascination with the dark arts wasn’t exactly a secret, even before you joined the school.”
“That’s enough Imelda.” Ominis turned his head to glare at the girl, his words icy. “I thought you of all people would be above petty gossip.” His hand drifted under the table to gently squeeze Y/N’s knee, reminding her to breathe. “I may not talk to Sebastian anymore, but that doesn’t mean I’ll allow you to sit here and disparage him like this.”
“Oh? Care to tell us exactly why you both stopped talking to him after his uncle died?”
“Imelda…” Poppy had a pained expression on her face as she looked between her friends, before darting her gaze over to Sebastian, who had his head buried in a book. “You’re going too far.”
“Apparently there’s no such thing when Y/N is concerned. She’ll forgive me and come crawling back, just like she does with Sallow.”
“So what if I do?” Y/N snapped, her voice rising. Madam Scribner shushed them sharply and sent them a glare, not that Y/N could find it in herself to care as she leant across the table to growl at Imelda. “Sebastian is one of my best friends, Reyes. Present tense. I don’t care that he’s not spoken to me in months - I will always be there for those who need me. I’ll always be there if he needs me.” Y/N looked over to Sebastian as she took a steadying breath, her eyes meeting his again. He watched her carefully, his head tilted to the side as he recognised the tell-tale signs of her anger. She couldn’t bring herself to look away from him as she spoke softly, justifying it with how far away he was sitting. “You have no idea what happened to us in our fifth year, absolutely none, so don’t pretend just because you listened to some bullshit gossip that you’re omniscient. The shit we went through - what the three of us went through - was something that’s bound us together for life. You don’t experience what we did and have the ability to stop caring for the other person - not that you could ever understand that.”
Something shifted in Sebastian’s gaze as Y/N spoke about him, and a small part of her wondered if he had somehow gained the ability to read lips and knew exactly what she was saying. She swallowed heavily as the air between them changed, her heart thumping nervously in her chest. Words from their fight echoed in her mind, but they were all drowned out by every good action he had ever taken for her, every good thing he had ever said to her. Y/N wasn’t quite sure if she could ever pull away from his hypnotising stare, but it seemed Imelda had made the choice for her as she leaned across the table and grabbed her chin, forcing her to look back at them.
“You can lie to me all you want, but I was there.” Imelda held Y/N’s chin firmly as she spoke, not tight enough to hurt, but enough that she couldn’t pull away. “Every single time you came back to our dorm room crying because he hurt you, I was there. I saw what he put you through and he doesn’t care. He’s not worth it. I won’t pretend to know what happened with the three of you in fifth year but he will never change. He’s only going to hurt you over and over again and you keep letting him. The devil doesn’t settle, Y/L/N.”
Y/N finally smacked Imelda’s hand away and broke free from her grasp, her eyes burning with humiliation and anger. Poppy looked taken aback at how forceful their friend was being, while Ominis gripped the edge of the table in frustration. He couldn’t tell exactly what was happening in front of him, but the tone of voice, followed by the sharp slap of skin, was indication enough. There was a tense silence at the table as Y/N and Imelda glared furiously at each other, neither of them willing to break the silence first. Y/N blinked back the tears of frustration that were welling in her eyes and stood up, muttering to the table that she needed another book for her essay, and ignoring Poppy as she quietly called after her.
She had to pass by Sebastian’s table as she walked away, her shoulders tight with tension as she very obviously avoided his eye so that he couldn’t see her tears. He stretched his arms out casually as she moved past him, his hand brushing hers gently. Y/N didn’t know if it was an accident or not, but she didn’t let it stop her as she made her way towards the shelves she needed and rounded the corner, disappearing from the immediate eyesight of her friends (and yes, as rage inducing as Imelda was, Y/N still considered her one).
Her shoulders slumped once she was hidden from view and Y/N couldn’t help but to gently press her forehead to one of the shelves to calm the mixed emotions that were running wildly through her. She was angry at Imelda, because how dare she speak to her like that - how dare she grab her like that. She was frustrated at herself, because even though Imelda’s approach was far from ideal, she was right. Y/N always got her hopes up whenever Sebastian would flash her a warm smile in passing, and it normally led to her crying or screaming in their dorm within the week because he had gone back to his usual routine of ignoring her. The final feeling (one she didn’t want to linger on for too long) was how her heart was racing wildly as the casual touch of Sebastian’s hand as she passed by him. She didn’t want to admit what the sensation was, not even to herself, and instead tried to convince herself that the fleeting graze of his skin on hers was nothing more than an accident.
“Imelda is sorry.” Poppy said softly, her quiet footsteps stopping a couple of feet away. Y/N let out a humourless laugh and wiped away a tear before she looked over her shoulder at the Hufflepuff.
“You and I both know that’s a lie. Have Ominis and Imelda sent you to corral me back?”
“No. Imelda wanted to march over and drag you back herself but I told her to leave you alone and give you a little space. Ominis agreed with me and said he knows first hand what your anger is like?” Poppy phrased the end like a question, earning a surprised chuckle from Y/N.
“I think I’ve scarred him for life after he took my coffee from me the other morning.”
“Poor choice.” Poppy laughed softly, knowing first-hand how grumpy Y/N could be in the mornings before her caffeine. The pair fell into a comfortable silence as Y/N turned to face the shelves again and pulled a book out to see if it held any information that could help with her work.
“What is it, Poppy?”
“I don’t want to upset you any more.”
“It can’t be any worse than what Imelda said to me,” she reminds her with a sigh. After a few more seconds Poppy still hadn’t responded so Y/N closed the book and turned to face her, holding the tome to her chest as she waited.
“I just…Imelda wasn’t all wrong,” the shorter girl shrugged and offered Y/N a sheepish smile as she looked at her in surprise. “Her delivery could have been a lot better, though.”
“That’s the understatement of the year,” Y/N muttered.
“Look, you know I’m not the type to lecture and condescend. All I want - all we all want - is what’s best for you. I know you might think Sebastian is it but I don’t think he is.” Poppy lowered her voice considerably and peaked around the corner as she said his name, taking care he wasn’t around to eavesdrop.
“I thought you Hufflepuff’s always saw the best in people.”
“We’re loyal to fault, and my loyalties lie with you, not him. I’ve seen you cry over him too, Y/N. I never told anyone about the fight you two had.” Y/N stilled at her friend’s words, her mind flashing back to the argument that that had happened a few months ago. After weeks of being ignored again Y/N had finally cornered Sebastian in the Undercroft, and much like a powder keg the whole thing blew up with harsh words flying back and forth between the pair. She had finally hit him with her worst fear; that he had only stuck around with her because she was a means to an end to cure Anne. Sebastian had gone silent before nodding, and turned to leave her alone in the room, his parting words of well if that’s what you think of me echoing around her long after he had gone.
“Why?”
“Why didn’t I tell anyone?” Poppy asked. “Or why do I think he isn’t what’s right for you?”
“Both.”
“For one, Imelda would probably hunt him down and actually kill him if I told her.” Poppy tilted her head to the side, a dry smile on her face. “But mostly it was because of you. If you wanted everyone to know they would - you wouldn’t have come banging on the Hufflepuff common room door past curfew asking for me.” Y/N gave her friend a rueful smile and dropped her head back on the shelf behind her to count the ceiling tiles so that she wouldn’t cry again. “As for still being mad at him…what you said was out of line, but he never fought to correct you or prove otherwise and I watched as that killed you. No one cries like that over a friendship. You both said some vile things to each other but he ripped your heart out of your chest and I don’t think I can ever forgive him for that.”
“You don’t mean that.”
“I do.”
“I was in the wrong for saying that to him.” Either of them could have apologised. It didn’t fall to just Sebastian. Y/N had said things to him that were just as nasty - if not worse - during their fight.
“You were,” Poppy agreed, “but that still doesn’t excuse his behaviour. You always make excuses for him. I’m not going to get mad like Imelda did but I will say I’m not surprised.”
“Why?”
“Because it’s obvious you’re in love with him.” Poppy gave her a sad smile and Y/N felt her cheeks burn as she froze, her eyes wide as she looked at her friend apprehensively.
“I never said - ”
“You didn’t have to.” Poppy reached out and squeezed Y/N’s hand gently before turning to walk away again. “I know you might think he’ll change this time, and maybe he will - I really hope he does, to be fully honest with you. But just remember one thing.”
“What’s that?”
“The devil doesn’t bargain.”
Poppy walked back to their table, leaving Y/N alone with her thoughts once again. Her heart clenched painfully in her chest and a small part of her was grateful that nobody really ventured into that corner of the library as she sank to the floor slowly. She pulled her knees up, resting her forehead against them as she tried to calm her breathing and hold back a fresh wave of tears. They were right - they were always right. Sebastian did this to her constantly; he kept pulling her in only to push her away again. The last time it had happened was around their fight, and she had been a wreck for weeks because of it.
“Y/N.” A pair of feet shuffled to a stop in front of her, and Y/N felt herself go still. She would recognise his voice anywhere. It was ingrained on her very soul. He sighed quietly and she heard the shifting of fabric as she sat down across from her, his legs stretched out in front of him so he could tap her ankle gently with his shoe. “I know you can hear me.”
“What do you want, Sebastian?” she asked, not raising her head to look at him, even though it muffled her voice. If she looked at him all resolve would break and she would either scream at him for leaving her or turn into a blubbering mess and she didn’t particularly care for either of those reactions at that moment.
“Look at me.”
“No.” Sebastian laughed, a genuine laugh which sent shivers down her spine. Y/N slowly lifted her head but still didn’t look at him and instead opted to stare at his polished black shoes.
“You’ve always been so stubborn.”
“I learnt from the best.”
“That Slytherin pride really did hit us both hard,” Sebastian mused. He was quiet for a few moments before he crossed his legs and scooted closer to her so that he was almost sitting on her feet. “Look at me, darling.” Y/N hated the way her body reacted to the term of endearment. She hated that her stomach flipped pleasantly, that her heart started to beat erratically, that she could feel her face burn. She finally looks up at him, meeting his warm brown eyes with a withering glare.
“Don’t call me that.”
“Are we still pretending you don’t secretly like it when I call you darling?”
“I’ll punch you.”
“Probably,” he chuckles quietly and reaches out to brush a stray tear from the corner of her eye. “Who did this?”
“Why do you care?”
“Contrary to what you shouted at me in the Undercroft, I have and always will care about you.”
“You have a funny way of showing it.”
“So we circle back to the pitfalls of Slytherin pride?” he asked, raising an eyebrow at her. “You could have just as easily spoken to me first.” Y/N looked away from him, turning her head so that she could see Madam Scribner standing at her desk and watching them both like a hawk. He was right. Hadn’t she just thought and said the same thing when she was speaking to Poppy? “Was it Reyes?”
“Will you curse her if it was?” Y/N couldn’t stop the words from tumbling out of her mouth and she instantly grimaced. “I didn’t mean - ”
“You did and that’s okay.” Sebastian pulled his hand away with a defeated sigh. “I haven’t touched dark magic since that night in the catacombs. I know some people think otherwise, but they’re wrong.” He catches the confusion on her face as she wonders how he knows that and runs a hand through his hair. “You’re all not nearly as silent as you think you are.”
“You heard everything?”
“Including your speech about how you’ll always be there for me.”
“What about…?” she looks away, stomach churning with nerves as she thought about what Poppy had said to her. ‘It’s obvious you’re still in love with him’.
“Your conversation with Sweeting stays between the two of you. That felt private.”
“And what we were saying at the table wasn’t?”
“Not when you were looking at me like that.”
“Like what?”
“Like I’m worth saving.” Y/N felt her heart crack in her chest at the look on his face. She slowly shifted so that she was crossing her legs instead and reached out to brush the back of his hand.
“Everyone is worth saving.” He gives her a sad smile at that, noting that she still won’t quite meet his eye as she chews on her lower lip nervously. They sit in silence for a few moments as Sebastian watches the cogs turn in her head before she lets out a quiet sigh and finally looks at him. “I’m sorry for what I said to you.”
“I’m sorry I treated you so poorly that you even thought about it in the first place.”
“I didn’t mean it. I just…I was angry and hurt and I lashed out and wanted you to feel even a fraction of the pain I was feeling. I know you were never just using me in the hopes of finding a cure for Anne. You didn’t even know about my ability to take pain away until we had been searching for a cure for months.”
“It doesn’t matter if you did mean it - I forgive you,” he murmured, taking her hand in his. He mulls over his next words carefully, a small frown on his face. “I was stupid to push you away. I thought you both would be better off without me - especially you. I led you down a dark path and never stopped to consider the consequences of doing so. I ruined your life.”
“No you didn’t,” Y/N tightened her grip on his hand so that he would meet her eye. “I’m my own person, Sebastian. I chose to follow you down that path. You always asked if I wanted to learn and I said yes. You never forced me into anything. You didn’t ruin my life.”
“What do you think will happen if anyone ever finds out what happened to Solomon?” his voice lowered considerably as he spoke. “You’re not just going to get a slap on the wrist, Y/N.”
“No one will find out, Seb. Even if they do, it was my choice. I was the one who told Ominis we shouldn’t turn you in.”
“You…why?” Sebastian’s voice cracked as he asked the question and Y/N saw tears start to well in his eyes. “Why would you risk everything for me like that?”
“Because I - ” Y/N broke off as she felt her face burn. Now wasn’t the time to accidentally tell him that she loved him. “Because I would do anything for you.”
“You said that in the present tense.”
“I did.”
“Even after all the horrible things I said to you?”
“I wasn’t exactly a saint back, Sebastian.”
“I don’t deserve you.”
“You do.” Y/N leaned forward and kissed his cheek before she could process the decision. “You deserve everything, Seb. You deserve to be happy.”
“You made me happy - you make me happy. Present tense,” he squeezes her hands gently. “I was an idiot to ever push you away.”
“Well, you won’t hear me disagree with that,” Y/N teased. Sebastian laughed quietly and she felt like a weight she didn’t even notice got lifted from her shoulders. “If you ever do this again…”
“Duly noted, no need to continue with that threat,” he chuckled. Footsteps walked in their direction - too heavy to be Poppy or Imelda and too purposeful to be any other student. The tell tale glow of Ominis’ wand lit up the stacks moment before he rounded the corner and came to a stop a few feet away from the pair.
“Y/N? Are you still here?”
“I am.” Ominis’ wand wavered to the left slightly, a barely perceptible frown on his face as he wondered who else was present, before he exhaled.
“Hello, Sebastian.”
“Ominis.” The pair stared at each other tensely (or at least, Sebastian stared at Ominis, whilst the latter looked slightly to his left) before Ominis turned to Y/N with a resigned expression.
“Shall I tell Imelda you’ve left? I can bring your things to the common room later.”
“She’s never going to believe it.”
“No, she won’t.” Ominis rolled his eyes and leaned against the bookshelf slightly. “She put two and two together the minute Sebastian walked in this direction, but Poppy is keeping her at bay.”
“She is?”
“She told me to tell you if you hurt Y/N again she will set a Hungarian Horntail on you,” Ominis turned back in Sebastian’s direction as he delivered the threat. “I don’t think I need to add what I’ll do if I ever have to listen to her cry again because of you.” Y/N looked away from Sebastian as his head snapped back in her direction, a look of distress on his features at knowing just how much pain he had caused her.
“Understood.” Sebastian stood up and brushed the dust from his trousers before offering Y/N his hand. She hesitated for a few seconds but took it nonetheless and let him pull her to her feet. Sebastian didn’t let go once she was standing and instead he laced their fingers together and gave her hand a gentle squeeze. “Thank you, Ominis.”
“Don’t thank me yet. If it wasn’t for Poppy I would jinx you where you stand.”
“Well, thank Sweeting for me then.” There was a small grin on Sebastian’s face as he carefully tugged at Y/N’s hand, silently asking if she would go with him. She nodded before releasing his fingers so that she could pull Ominis into a tight hug. He froze, not expecting the contact, before weaving his wand-free hand around her frame and hugging her back.
“You tell me if he tries anything,” he muttered in her ear.
“Right after I hex him first.”
“That’s my girl.” Ominis released her with a chuckle and Y/N wandered back to Sebastian, who placed a hand on her lower back as he led her out of the library. They walked in silence until they reached the north exit for the castle and Sebastian let out a long breath and turned to look at her.
“I need you to know I’ll never treat you like that again. I can’t even begin to make it all up to you, but I’m willing to spend the rest of my days doing so,” he said. Y/N reached out for his hand and laced their fingers together again as she pulled him towards the gate that would lead them towards the path for Hogsmeade.
“On one condition.”
“Anything.”
“You forgive me for how I spoke to you and what I accused you of,” she came to a stop and turned to look at him.
“Done,” he said quietly, a soft smile on his face. “I forgave you for that a long time ago, Y/L/N.” He brushed some hair behind her ear, his touch lingering on her cheek before he cleared his throat and looked away, his cheeks tinted pink. Y/N felt her stomach flip pleasantly and couldn’t help but smile shyly as they turned back towards the path. Now wasn’t the time to consider her feelings for him, or to tease him for his blush. But one day the bridges between them would be mended completely, and so she stored the information away for then.
A Daring Prefect (Amit Thakkar x Reader) - Part One
Summary: Amit and Reader are in an established relationship. One night, the reader sneaks out of their common room to go to the Forbidden Forest. Amit catches them and is angry because Reader promised not to go on dangerous adventures anymore. However, Reader is on a mission and needs to see the Centaurs. Amit reluctantly chooses to accompany Reader since he knows they won’t be dissuaded from their plan.
This story can be read as a continuation of the headcanons with Amit I wrote.
This story will have two parts.
Reader’s gender, house, and appearance are not specified.
Noiselessly you crept along the polished floor of the Central Hall, hiding behind a banister to evade the searching glances of the Prefects that stood guard at the doors to the library. You were crouched on the staircase, concealed by the Disillusionment Charm. You had just made your way through the Transfiguration Courtyard and were hoping to reach the end of the Central Hall so that you could turn left to go toward the Bell Tower. From there, you could easily reach the Grounds of Hogwarts and leave the school. If you got past the Prefects in front of the library, everything else would be a cinch.
You had snuck out of school more than a dozen times, and it had become routine for you to slyly walk past oblivious authority figures. Your little game of Hide and Seek had never been discovered, although rumors were circulating in school that you were prone to leave Hogwarts Castle past curfew and frequently violated the school rules. Your best friends – Amit, Natty, Sebastian, Poppy, and Ominis – knew these rumors were true, but they would never tell on you. Also, you were too clever to let yourself get caught, which included developing methods to evade Professor Weasley’s perceptive eyes and endless questions. She definitely knew what kind of mischief you were up to, but no matter where your missions brought you, you didn’t leave behind any evidence against you.
This time, the mission of the day, or rather night, was to ask the Centaurs in the Forbidden Forest about healing herbs for Mr Pippin, who was working on a new potion to heal injuries. Apparently, his competition with Fatimah Lawang had got a little out of hand, and they were trying to invent potions to outdo the other.
Breathing evenly, you peeped over the edge of the last stair leading up to the fountain in the middle of the Central Hall, watching the Prefects. Two Prefects – one a Slytherin, the other a Hufflepuff – were conversing intently in front of the left library door about Herbology and the best way to grow Chinese Chomping Cabbages. Three more Prefects – two Gryffindors and a Ravenclaw – were huddled closely in front of the right door, sharing goods from Honeydukes.
Quickly, you cast Depulso at the left library door, which swung open and collided loudly with the wall. Confused, the Hufflepuff and Slytherin Prefects turned around and examined the door, calling, “Is someone there?” When their backs were turned to you, you sprinted toward the fountain, hiding behind it and breathing a sigh of relief.
Fortunately, your little distraction got the attention of the other Prefects. They, too, were perplexed. Suspiciously, they looked around. One of the Gryffindor Prefects walked over to the Slytherin boy and Hufflepuff girl, who were trying to identify the source of the loud collision. The girl walked downstairs into the library to investigate.
“What was that?” asked the Gryffindor Prefect, but the Slytherin boy only shrugged his shoulders.
“Peeves, maybe.”
“We should search the library, too. Just to make sure no one snuck into the forbidden section.” The Gryffindor patted the shoulder of his friend encouragingly and followed the Hufflepuff student. Looking to his green-robed friend, who walked down the stairs rather reluctantly, he said, “It’s probably that Sallow boy again. He never knows when enough is enough.”
You smiled to yourself. Tomorrow at breakfast you would sooo tease Sebastian about what you just heard.
The Gryffindor and Ravenclaw students in front of the right library door dispersed. The other Gryffindor student now guarded the door to the library that had been left unattended.
Confidently, you raised your wand, casting a basic Charm on a book stack next to the Ravenclaw student. Scared, she jumped and turned around frantically. You took that chance to sprint toward the stairs leading to the doors of the Greenhouses. However, while you ran in a crouched position, you slowed down anxiously. You heard light footsteps descending the grand stairs behind you. And it must have been your lucky day because obviously, it was no one else but your boyfriend Amit Thakkar. He could not see you! You promised him to abstain from dangerous adventures outside the castle. However, based on his light jog, his black hair swaying slightly due to the motion, and his carefree expression, Amit didn’t notice you. With a pounding heart, you ran down the stairs in front of you as quickly as possible and hid next to them right as Amit passed the fountain.
Indeed, it must have been your lucky day… Amit didn’t see you nor did he look like he suspected anything. But you swore that you saw him gazing at you and narrowing his eyes suspiciously when he came down the stairs. Well, phew… you have officially prevented a relationship crisis.
You calmed your palpitating heart, not daring to move as Amit struck up a conversation with the other Ravenclaw Prefect.
“You look pale. Are you alright?” Amit crossed his arms and examined the books that were sprawled out at the girl’s feet.
“Yes… I am fine.” The girl laughed brightly – brighter than was appropriate – and brushed her hair behind her ear. You could only hear and not see her, but you were sure that she was blushing, falling victim to the Amit Effect. The very thing that made you fall for your boyfriend in the first place. “It’s just that the door to the library swung open a minute ago… And well, it did so just like that. No one caused it. And now the book stack tipped over…”
Amit’s voice sounded beyond wary when he answered, and you were certain that he brought his hand to his chin. “…Is that so?”
You didn’t waste more time and turned left to get to the Bell Tower, thinking about Amit as you strode along the corridors.
Perfect Amit… His grades were flawless, his social skills were impressive, and he exuded reliability and calmness. In other words, he was exactly what you needed. You loved the thrill of adventure and the rush of adrenaline in your veins, but what you loved, even more, was the security Amit could offer you and always offered you whenever you came down from your high. He was your solid rock amidst chaos and kept turbulences at safe distances.
Of course, Amit was aware that this was one of the reasons you fell in love with him, but although he knew how much you liked the combination of a thrilling adventure and his calmness, and although he knew how imperative this combination was to you, he never encouraged you to seek out danger. In fact, he was so done worrying about you all the time that he made you promise to turn your back on “the dangerous life” – that’s what he coined your lifestyle. At first, a big argument ensued, and you told him to go back to his telescope and leave you alone, which made him cry – Amit was a sensitive and soft young man; he was the green flag in your relationship while you often were the red one. But you two could never stay separate for too long, and it just hurt to have an argument. Eventually, you reached out first and apologized. Well, and you vowed you would live the life of an ordinary student (pretending you didn’t rescue Hogwarts from Ranrok and like you didn’t possess ancient magic).
What was the harm anyway? It couldn’t hurt to have a regular sleeping schedule. Well actually, your current behavior was potentially risking your relationship with Amit and his trust in you. So, there was the harm. But he would never know that you broke your promise from two months ago which you only adhered to for two weeks anyway. How would he know?
You reached the big double doors leading to the Grounds of Hogwarts when you heard someone clearing his throat behind you. You froze instantly and withdrew your arm that was about to push the doors open. Carefully, you glanced over your shoulder, seeing Amit standing a few feet in front of you, his arms crossed. An angry look was plastered on his handsome face.
Oh, no. Here we go.
You saw no point in trying to get out of this one. You broke your Disillusionment Charm and stared guiltily up at Amit.
Accusingly, he looked at you. He seemed to be angrier than hurt which relieved you somewhat. “You promised, (Name).”
You looked to your side, scratching your neck awkwardly. “I know, Amit. I am—”
“No!” He closed the distance between you and grabbed you by your shoulders, forcing you to look at him. “I don’t want to hear it! If you felt truly sorry, you would have never broken your promise in the first place. You would have foreseen how you would have felt in a situation like this one! You would have never betrayed me like that.”
Exasperatedly, you groaned. “Amit, feelings don’t affect us causally. Only if that were the case, would you be right, and I would have never lied to you.”
Amit shook his head. Offended, he poked your chest with his finger repeatedly. “Don’t. Be. Cocky. I’m a Ravenclaw. I know that.”
Annoyed, you tried to push Amit away, but he clung to you like a moth to a flame. Besides, you didn’t want him to let go, and even though his dark eyes were boring holes into your soul, you couldn’t help but marvel at their beauty.
“How long?” His mouth moved slowly as he repeated sternly, “How long?”
Ashamed, you mumbled, “One month and two weeks.”
“Wha—” He brought his hands to his head and took a few steps back from you. He pointed his hand at you like an angry mum chastising her child. “You have been lying to me for this long?”
“Amit, I—” You tried stepping toward him, but his hands made sharp motions in the air like he was cutting something with them.
“No, no, no! I don’t want to hear it!” Tears were collecting in the corners of his eyes, and he sniveled softly. “But why, (Name)? Did our promise really mean nothing to you?”
Suddenly, unpredictable anger surged through you, and you couldn’t stop the words from tumbling out of your mouth that you had been meaning to say for a while but never dared to do until now. “Our promise? It was my promise!” Angrily you clenched your fists around the fabric of your robe. “I had to promise to you to refrain from risky outings outside the castle because you wanted to feel reassured about my safety.”
Agitated, Amit paced back and forth, one hand grabbing the thick hair at the back of his neck. “Is it because I am not Sebastian?” His other hand ran nervously across his face. “Because I am not as daring as him?” He came to a halt abruptly and turned to face you. “If you want him, leave me be and never show your face again.”
Tears shot down your cheeks and you didn’t even care to hide them or dry your face. “Gosh, Amit… You are not listening!” You grabbed him by his collar and pulled him down to look properly into his eyes. You saw that he was just as hurt as you were. “I told you again and again that I love you just the way you are. You are my favorite person. I want you and not Sebastian!”
However, Amit’s thoughts had taken on a life of their own, and he was indeed not listening to your words. Desperate, he grabbed your wrists; your hands were still holding onto his collar which had become your lifeline in this argument. “What do you even mean by that I wanted to feel reassured about your safety?" Amit asked, exhausted. “Do you mean to say that you just made that promise to appease me? You made that promise for me and never for us?”
You bit your lips, tasting the salt that your tears left in their wake. “Well, yeah… I promised because I love you, but I found out pretty quickly that I cannot neglect a vital part of myself. It is in my nature to explore and fight. And as much as I love you, I cannot change for you. Either you accept me as I am, or you don’t. In the latter case, we have to break up.”
Defeated, you looked down, seeing your small feet standing in front of Amit’s large ones. Your shoulders shook and your grip on Amit loosened. Your hands were threatening to fall numbly to your sides, but before they could, Amit pulled you into a hug that was so tight that your face and hands were pressed flush against his chest. Gently, his hand cradled your head, and the other found your back.
“But I want you, (Name). Only you.”
You wanted to reply, but the sound of approaching footsteps woke you from your romantic hug and what would have been a reconciliation.
You were both full-on panicking as you broke apart and looked frantically for a hiding spot. Eventually, you spotted a statue and pulled Amit behind it, casting the Disillusionment Charm on you to make you almost invisible.
“Right…” Amit gave you a vexed and offensive side-eye. “You would know everything about hiding, wouldn’t you?” He lifted his wand, casting a Disillusionment Charm on himself, too.
“What is that supposed to mean?” The space behind the statute was narrow. Your back was pressed against the wall and your chest was touching Amit’s torso. You were so close that you could feel the even rise and fall of his stomach and ribs as he breathed.
“Well, you using the Disillusionment Charm demonstrates how you sneak out of the castle.” His warm breath fanned your face. Quietly, he mumbled to himself, “Why am I even hiding? I am a Prefect.”
You snorted. “You needed a demonstration to figure that out?” You tried crossing your arms but quickly gave up due to the lack of space. Instead, you lowered your hands to your sides where they accidentally brushed against Amit’s, who grabbed them gingerly despite your argument. “It is the most practical method there is,” you continued, “I guess, your little Ravenclaw brain failed you there.”
A growl that marked the inception of his stubborn and witty reply reverberated through his chest, sending chills down your body. Amit had to smother the words that were beginning to form, though, because the footsteps that you had heard earlier, walked past your hiding spot. Sneakily, both of you risked a glance to see who was steering toward the Grounds of Hogwarts and leaving the castle late at night. As Amit turned his head to look over his shoulder, you leaned forward, looking past him. To your surprise, you saw Professor Weasley opening the great double doors, giggling to herself, and holding a letter in her hand.
“A late-night rendezvous,” she hummed, delighted. “How risky.” The doors fell shut behind her with a loud bang.
“Impossible,” Amit breathed in disbelief.
“Well, the most unexpected events happen at night.” You shrugged, unimpressed. Breaking the Disillusionment Charm, you left your hiding spot. “See you tomorrow, Amit. I have something to take care of.”
“Wait!” Your Ravenclaw friend held you back by your arm and his translucent figure took on a solid shape again. “I think you owe me an explanation. I could have exposed your shenanigans in the Central Hall when I saw you creeping from the fountain to the stairs you hid behind. What are you up to now?”
“Wow,” you rolled your eyes. "You sound just like Ignatia Wildsmith.”
Amit lifted his eyebrow. A disappointed twinkle simmered in his eyes. “Can you be serious and not sarcastic for once? I truly worry for you.”
“Fine.” Your shoulders slumped forward, and you dropped your tough act. With him you could just be yourself, so why did you try to push him away with peevish remarks? “I am heading to the Forbidden Forest to—”
“The Forbidden Forest!?”
“To meet up with a Centaur called Dorran to ask him about healing herbs.” Briefly, you explained to Amit, whose expression slowly shifted from appalment to amazed astonishment, that you were helping Mr Pippin with a new potion recipe.
“A Centaur?” Amit mumbled in disbelief and his astronomer’s heart beat faster. “I— Well, you know that… I mean, I am responsible for escorting you back to your common room, but…” He got lost in his own thoughts, thinking hard and staring at nothing in particular. Before long, he snapped his fingers excitedly. “Yes, I know! I will escort you to your common room after we have been in the Forbidden Forest together to meet Dorran and enquire about these healing herbs.” Amit’s large hands straightened his robes, and he adopted an imposing stance. “I cannot pass this chance to meet a Centaur. They know the stars better than anyone. I will approve of this excursion of yours solely for educational purposes. And because I have to make sure that my boyfriend/girlfriend/partner does not come to any harm.”
“Aren’t you chivalrous?” Smiling and winking at Amit, you grabbed his hand, pulling him out of the castle. “Have you forgotten about that time I took you to a Goblin mine to translate construction plans? You didn’t appear as brave back then.”
“Don’t remind me, please.”
“There will be spiders in the Forbidden Forest. Lots of them.”
“But you will also be there. Logically speaking, you are the real menace, and you happen to be on my side, meaning I am in capable hands.”
Laughing playfully, you pressed a kiss to his cheeks.
