this informational piece is directed to the gale fandom specifically:

grooming is a tactic where someone methodically builds a trusting relationship with a child or young adult, their family, and community to manipulate, coerce, or force the child or young adult to engage in sexual activities.

1. Choosing a victim - The predator often chooses a child who is obviously vulnerable. Children who are withdrawn, low on confidence, emotionally deprived and with less parental supervision are particularly at risk.

2. Building access & trust - Sexual abuse often begins with friendship. The abuser can also take on other roles such as a romantic partner, a mentor, a caregiver or an authority figure. The abuser spends time in getting to know the victim's likes, dislikes and habits and pretending to share common interests. The perpetrator establishes trust with the child by making them feel special, sometimes through gifts or excessive compliments and attention. This is especially dangerous for vulnerable children who do not experience attention in their daily lives. In the trust development stage, offenders aim to develop a trusting friendship or relationship with their victim. This can involve several tactics, including:

a) praising the child for their maturity and intelligence;

b) encouraging the child to disclose personal information;

c) syncing their language with that of the child;

d) highlighting mutuality (i.e., similar interests, attitudes and behaviors between the offender and child); and finally,

e) portraying themselves as being trustworthy and nice.

3. Filling a need with gifts & favors - Giving the victim small gifts and favours is a strategy used by perpetrators to make the child feel indebted. Trust is further built by sharing intimate life details, going on special outings and giving the child access to things they normally wouldn’t get. Once the offender has identified a child’s needs, they will try to be the “hero” to the child who gives them what they desire. Examples include gifts, extra attention, or affection. This causes the child to see them as highly important and even idolized. They won’t want to upset them in risk of not getting the void in their life fulfilled.

4. Isolating - The groomer actively tries to isolate the child from people who may be watchful or helpful. This kind of isolation creates deeper connection & dependency. The offender also exhibits exemplary behaviour before parents of the victim & manipulates them into trusting the relationship. They will use this trust to create situations in which they are alone with the child. Time spent alone also reinforces the “special connection” the child feels they have with the offender. This “special connection” is further reinforced when the offender convinces the child that they love and appreciate them more than anyone else.

5. Initiating sexual contact - With the power over the child victim established through emotional connection coercion or one of the other tactics, the perpetrator may eventually initiate physical contact with the victim. It may begin with touching that is not overtly sexual (though a predator may find it sexually gratifying) and that may appear to be casual (arm around the shoulder, pat on the knee, etc.). Gradually, the perpetrator may introduce more sexualized touching. By breaking down inhibitions and desensitizing the child, the perpetrator can begin overtly touching the child. At this stage, the offender will exploit a child’s natural curiosity through physical touch and excitement. They will begin to teach the child sexual preferences and manipulate what the child responds to. The child begins to see themselves as a sexual being prematurely and the relationship with the offender now takes on a sexual term.

6. Post-abuse maintenance - The goal of the final stage is to ensure the child remains trapped in the cycle of abuse and loyal to the abuser, by either reinforcing and maintaining trust in order to prevent disclosure, or by explicitly threatening or blackmailing the child or their loved ones. This can also be reinforced and maintained by, for instance, giving the child affection, praise or encouragement for one’s actions.

I was rewatching the Poison scene from Hazbin Hotel after someone pointed out that Angel is trying to keep the audience from watching the screens, and that sent me down a Rabbit hole where I ended up analyzing the scene like tons of other people haven't done this already, but who cares, I wanna ramble!

In Poison, right before the dance scene, Angel was being SAd, and the song lyrics say "I disassociate, dissappear." And then, it switches from horrifying, where Angel looks terrified, to him dancing where he appears a lot more confident. But the screens still show the horrifying videos of him being gagged and beaten.

The reason? The dancing isn't real. It's all in Angel's head. He's dissasociating by doing something he likes, dancing, to cope with what's happening. But, the screens show what is happening to him in real life.

Furthermore, Angel actively tries to drive us, the audience, away from the screens. He dances in the middle where there are no screens, and when he goes to where the screens are, he quickly moves away before the audience can grasp what they're seeing. When that doesn't work anymore, he goes close to the camera and blocks the screens so we can only look at how he wants us to loom at him.

There was more stuff like this before this specific part, but I'm not showing a gif of that because it's actually more horriyifying than this. But in the scene, it shows us in real time, no screens, of what's happening to Angel if very quick snippets, before it shows back to him dancing. In one clip, he bangs his fists on the ground out of anger, and that happens in his head too, like he can't dissociate anymore. But, he moves past it and does the dance he's doing on the above gif, because he's not fully broken yet.

But then, Valentino comes in, and everything is ruined. @veetowervaporwave pointed out that he grabs him and keeps him still, forcing the audience to look back at the screens

Angel was able to keep pushing himself, able to keep moving no matter how much it hurt or how hard it was to distract himself. But when Valentino comes, that all breaks, and Angel's daydream falls apart because Valentino is the reminder that he can't escape, even in his own mind. You can even see Angel try to escape, like he's trying to escape the grasp of his reality, but Val grabs his arm and forces Angel to face him, bringing him back to the real world, where his room has been made into a mess, he has bruises all over his body, and Val's poisons spit is dripping from his mouth.

(Also someone pointed out that Angel screaming "I'll be yours" was him screaming in pain in real life, and istg I NEED VAL'S HEAD ON A FUCKING STICK)

I do not care what 5e says: succubi are and always have been Tanar'ri (demons), and Haarlep is a fucking brachina (pleasure devil).

(Brachina are a sub-caste of erinyes (fallen angels and high ranking devils), who have basically been selected to do the same fucking thing as the succubi without fucking up the lore's traditional devil-demon divide (although they're typically assigned to corrupt the clerics and paladins of good deities). They get feathery black wings instead of leathery ones (although, due to polymorph they can change the appearance if they will it) and they're often very invested in their jobs on the mortal planes because when they're not working they run the risk of getting sold off as sex toys to powerful devils (usually pit fiends, sometimes an archdevil) which is... not a fun experience! Also they're very dedicated to their missions, because they're punished hard for failure.

Their touch saps the will (or life force) of mortals on top of the usual enchantment and mind-control stuff.

Why do I care so much about this little detail? I don't know or care, I just do. I hate unnecessary change to the tiny details. Haaate it.)

Wrt the Chuggaaconroy situation, I'd like to also point out that LadyEmily herself is Autistic; which honestly, makes this situation even worse because Autistic women and enbys are 9 out of ten times more likely to face sexual harassment than our neurotypical peers.

ast*rion: 'the guy who tries to kill the player as soon as they meet' interviewer: i really liked handing ast*rion over to the gur hunter, and actually that felt like the right ending to me. lead writer 1: in many ways it is, yeah. interviewer: if you wait that long, it's a cool ending. founder of the company: it is. we talked about that a lot. we talked about everything a lot. there's very little that went into game, even down to the individual lines, that we didn't discuss. [...] and as you say, it fixes things very well. lead writer 2: on a very human level, you have the guy who tries to kill the player as soon as they meet and then, next rest, tries to assault them at camp. the guy who is very prejudiced against a minority, he's constantly trying to manipulate you into sleeping with him and giving him blood, otherwise he's in trouble, and at the end, he gives himself to the world for justice. founder of the company: and he had a choice already once before where he wasn't ready for it. so it's a very powerful ending and it comes in different permutations.

i think it says a lot when someone feels the need to move goalposts, misrepresent what was actually said both by the devs in this interview and by the people - the people who identify with gale for themes touched on in his narrative arc, be it depression, suicidal ideation, chronic illness, etc - offering valid criticism in response to said interview.

it's not wrong or out of touch to expect industry veterans to be more conscious of these themes within their own games and, just as importantly, in how they speak about them.

which again, they showed they are capable of in other instances of the same interview. just not with gale, for whom they've chosen to parrot reddit-level talking points.

I've been thinking a lot about the whole "Hamas beheaded 40 Israeli babies" thing and people arguing back and forth as to whether or not it's true. But like.....what does that matter on the broader conversation? Say for the sake of argument hamas did do that, does that justify the ethnic cleansing of plaestinians FUCK NO. It's a distraction from the larger things happening.

Even if all that stuff happened or not, Israel is culpable of it. If you decide to oppress the indigenous people, colonize their land, lock them inside an open air prison, then the oppressed will retaliate. Israel is a genocidal state that has murdered, tortured, kidnapped, and r*ped Palestinians for 75 years. It uses the excuse of self-defense to carry out the ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian people. The end result will be bloody and not peaceful as it has been proven throughout history.
