2. ATTACHMENT

When Leah suffers a mysterious seizure, Maja fears their whirlwind romance might be cut short and decides to follow Leah back to her home in London. There, Maja meets her new downstairs neighbour: Leah’s mother, Chana. An overbearing, seemingly religious and highly secretive woman, Chana seems resistant to all of Maja’s attempts to win her over. 4. M3GAN
M3GAN is a marvel of artificial intelligence, a life-like doll programmed to be a child's greatest companion and a parent's greatest ally. Designed by brilliant toy-company roboticist Gemma (Get Out's Allison Williams), M3GAN can listen and watch and learn as she becomes friend and teacher, playmate and protector, for the child she is bonded to. When Gemma suddenly becomes the caretaker of her orphaned 8-year-old niece, Cady (Violet McGraw, The Haunting of Hill House), Gemma's unsure and unprepared to be a parent. Under intense pressure at work, Gemma decides to pair her M3GAN prototype with Cady in an attempt to resolve both problems--a decision that will have unimaginable consequences.
5. INFLUENCER
INFLUENCER tells the story of Madison (Emily Tennant, "Riverdale"), a popular social media influencer who is having a lonely and uneventful trip in Thailand despite what she tells her followers on Instagram. While reflecting on her boyfriend canceling the trip, she meets CW (Cassandra Naud, "See"), a fearless and enigmatic traveler who offers to take her to some of the most Instagram-worthy locations. Together they share authentic meals and drinks with locals, discussing the differences between Madison's online presence and CW's lack of one. After showing Madison all of the amazing sights, things take a different turn when CW brings her to a surprise location -- a deserted island that is completely off the grid.
6. BROOKLYN 45
Friday, December 27, 1945. Five military veterans gather in the ornate parlor of a Brooklyn brownstone. Best friends since childhood, they've reunited to support their troubled host -- but when his invitation for cocktails turns into an impromptu séance, the metaphoric ghosts of their past become all-too-literal. Trapped in their host's lounge, the Greatest Generation now finds themselves put to one final test... with their only route to freedom being more bloodshed.
7. TOTALLY KILLER
Thirty-five years after the shocking murder of three teens, the infamous "Sweet Sixteen Killer" returns on Halloween night to claim a fourth victim. Seventeen-year-old Jamie (Kiernan Shipka) ignores her overprotective mom's (Julie Bowen) warning and comes face-to-face with the masked maniac and, on the run for her life, accidentally time travels back to 1987, the year of the original killings. Forced to navigate the unfamiliar and outrageous culture of the 1980s, Jamie teams up with her teen mom (Olivia Holt) to take down the killer once and for all, before she's stuck in the past forever.
8. THE BLACKENING
The Blackening centers around a group of Black friends who reunite for a Juneteenth weekend getaway only to find themselves trapped in a remote cabin with a twisted killer. Forced to play by his rules, the friends soon realize this ain't no motherfu**in' game. Directed by Tim Story (Ride Along, Think Like A Man, Barbershop) and co-written by Tracy Oliver (Girls Trip, Harlem) and Dewayne Perkins (The Amber Ruffin Show, Brooklyn Nine-Nine), The Blackening skewers genre tropes and poses the sardonic question: if the entire cast of a horror movie is Black, who dies first?
9. SICK
As the pandemic steadily brings the world to a halt, Parker and her best friend Miri decide to quarantine at the family lake house alone--or so they think.
10. INFINITY POOL
While staying at an isolated island resort, James (Alexander Skarsgård) and Em (Cleopatra Coleman) are enjoying a perfect vacation of pristine beaches, exceptional staff, and soaking up the sun. But guided by the seductive and mysterious Gabi (Mia Goth), they venture outside the resort grounds and find themselves in a culture filled with violence, hedonism, and untold horror. A tragic accident leaves them facing a zero tolerance policy for crime: either you'll be executed, or, if you're rich enough to afford it, you can watch yourself die instead.

wip wednesday, got tagged by @the-lastcall! not gonna tag anyone cause i can't keep track of that kinda stuff
don't have any tow drawings underway and only one fic i'm somewhat actively writing atm so here's something from "that one time in fallbrook" chapter three which i should get around to continuing:
The whole crew had a free couple of days planetside—save for Max, who the captain had ordered to stay behind so that “no one would have to sacrifice their night out to babysit him”. Of course, Max didn’t plan on spending the night alone. How smug must he have felt, slipping the ring there and knowing Felix had to stay there anyway. Of course, he didn’t have to, but… “Hey, Boss.” “Hmm?” Felix had found the captain reading a brochure of a local séance parlor. “Think I’m gonna need to rest today after all. Been losing sleep lately you know.” Felix realized how suspicious the last part sounded and added: “I got some new sheets but I always forget to ask SAM to change them and—” “You don’t like your bedsheets?” “Ah, well, reckon it’s what you’re used to and all—” “Should have said. We have other kinds,” the captain said and grabbed another brochure, this one for a spa. “Uh, yeah. Didn’t think of that,” Felix said and took a second to think how he really could have. “Anyway, I’m joining you guys tomorrow if it’s okay.” Captain nodded casually, then paused and stared Felix in the eye, their eyes narrowing suspiciously. Felix felt a blush creeping up his neck. The captain then shook their head suddenly and went back to the pile of brochures. “Yes, sure. Sounds good. Go away now, I’m busy.” As Felix hurried away, he could hear the captain mutter “don’t know anything, not my business anyway” to themself.
also gonna share this snippet from halcyon days sequel i've had sitting on my hard drive for who knows how long in case publishing it makes me actually write the damn thing
Faux leather boots gleamed in the dim golden electrical lighting. Sharp clicks emanated on every step as the heels met the cold, flawless stone steps. Soundlessly, a hand in a thin, black silk glove slid down the burgundy wood railing, lacquered impossibly glossy and smooth. Hours of accumulated cigarette smoke remained in the air as a thin fog, softening the lamplight in the tall hall. Voices from tens of concurrent exchanges all melted into one soft background noise. There was no background music, but you wouldn’t notice its absence for the hypnotic murmur of the mass of guests occupying every corner of the hall. A bottle popped open somewhere in the room. The click of the heels ended as the man reached the bottom of the stairs and stopped. He was just brushing aside a stubborn strand of dark hair from his face as a woman tapped him on the shoulder. “Long time no see, Felix.”

AI images are a metaphor for how clearly surveillance capital can see you. which is to say, they can't, but they are very good at drawing an approximately human visage with the right proportion of features. like, the statistical average of you, and several thousand other people who are a little bit like you... they can't see you really, they can see a you-shaped fog. guessing things about you based on this does look like divination but it's a parlor trick for séances. the AI image is telling me someone was important to you, whose name began with... M? or possibly N? it's hard to tell

OH ANOTHER IDEA I HAD
I like the idea of another ghost episode but this time where Donnie is involved as well. Fuck it, all four of them.
Because what I want from it is for Leo to be The Skeptic. And while you’d think Donnie would be as well, I want Donnie to FULLY believe in ghosts.
Like, he REALLY REALLY wants ghosts to be a thing and he goes insane with all the equipment and stuff because he wants to find ghosts and scientifically prove them.
Its like, the one area of the supernatural he’s always been on board with.
He doesn’t get the spirituality of it, he’d never like, do a séance candlelit parlor style but he would absolutely have every kind of camera and recorder running simultaneously.
He’d have a geiger counter on a ghost hunt.

On this day:
On October 31, 1873, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, written by Charles Dickens, appeared in the bookstalls of America. Dickens wrote the first six chapters while he was alive and the last six chapters after he was dead.
Famous mystery writer Wilkie Collins had challenged his friend Charles Dickens to try the new genre. The novel was serialized in twelve monthly instalments by a magazine, published in Britain, and then shipped to America. For the first time in Dickens's writing career, he had insisted on a contract stating that his heirs would receive royalties if he should die. Dickens passed away halfway through writing the fascinating story.
Three years later, in Vermont, a capricious young man named Thomas James moved into a boarding house owned by a woman interested in Spiritualism. In October 1872, after a year of attending séances in the parlor, James declared he had been contacted by the spirit of Charles Dickens, who asked James to let himself be used by Dickens to finish The Mystery of Edwin Drood. The landlady gave James free room and board until the book was complete. Witnesses testified that the gadabout would go into long trances and write furiously, declaring Dickens was dictating to him.
As word got out, James was accused of fraud by the newspapers who doubted the finished book would appear. But appear it did—attributed to "the spirit pen of Charles Dickens." Controversy over the authenticity of the mystery's solution circulated among the early scholars, each arguing their case based on clues found in the working notes left behind by Dickens and the vignettes on the cover of the monthly installments. The case was investigated by Arthur Conan Doyle, creator of Sherlock Holmes. Doyle said that James did not have the mental agility to complete the novel without help.

Rain: Empty Names - 1 - Hello World
As they cross the parking lot, Lacuna notices a change in the pattern of the rain pelting her and realizes Road’s held the umbrella out to cover her.
“Thanks.”
“Don’t mention it.  By the way, is there something else you’d prefer I call you?”
“What?  No, no, Lacuna’s fine.”  Better than fine, really.  Better than expected even.
Back up the stairs and at the door, Lacuna pauses with the key half turned in the lock.  “Oh, before we go in, I apologize ahead of time for the mess.  It’s been a rough few weeks and I wasn’t expecting company.”
The disclaimer is met with a reassuring smile and a soft shake of the head.  “Trust me, I’ve seen worse.”
“Right.  Right.  Of course.”  The key completes its turn along with the knob and the door cracks open.  “And heads up, this thing can be a bit -”
“AND THE FLESHY MORSEL COMES CRAWLING BACK TO ME, RESIGNED TO HIS PITIFUL FATE IN HOPES FOR A QUICK DEATH BEFORE MY MEAL AS A REWARD FOR HIS COMPLIANCE!”
“Loud…”
Cabinet: Empty Names - 11 - Afterparty
As he lets go to drop into the plushly upholstered chair now beneath him a buzzing electric chandelier flickers to life, revealing the recreation of a nineteenth century occultist’s séance parlor around him.  Dark red velvet curtains (expensive) lining the walls, crystal ball (mundane) nestled in a pillow on the table (mahogany) in front of him, ouija board (fake) on one side, tarot deck (fake but good for introspection) on the other, human skull (real) on a nearby pedestal, cabinet of curiosities (fraudulent) behind him, and eldritch communion incense (distressingly real) resting cold and unburnt in a tentacle-shaped holder.
It had been another one of Carnette’s little jokes, setting up this hackneyed facade on top of the actual necromantic summoning chamber of her own design.  There was always one of those to go through anytime Sullivan wanted to get into the tools and mechanisms she’d left behind.  Daily reminders of her just as constant as the blue metal wedding band on his finger.
Chocolate: The Archivist's Journal, Day 2
For that matter, I couldn’t (and still can’t) remember a great number of things, who I am or where I was before this chief among them.  Or rather, I know things about myself, but not my history.  I know what a cat is but not if I’ve ever had one as a pet.  I know I like hot chocolate but can’t bring to mind the context of a time I ever drank it.  I know what microwaves, electronics, the internet, gerrymandering, atomic structures, feudal governing systems, and crop rotation all are and have varying degrees of understanding on how they work and have opinions on some of them, but I can’t remember learning those things or where (or if) I ever directly encountered any of them.  And from what I’ve seen I don’t think this place has any of those.
Even my own body felt unfamiliar once I finally got up and tried moving.  Like all my limbs were slightly different proportions than my reflexes were used to and my center of gravity displaced.
Looking back, it’s probably a good thing I was so out of it at the time.  I probably would have panicked pretty bad.
View: The Archivist's Journal, Day 3
The tower! How did I forget to mention that yesterday?  If there’s one thing I’ve seen in my brief time here that convinces me that this place is somehow fundamentally removed from the world I have vague memories of it’s that.  Look to the north and so long as your view of the sky is unobstructed you’ll see it.  A structure, maybe stone, maybe metal; difficult to gauge its distance due to the sheer impossible scale of it.  From my house… the thought feels strange to put to paper but I suppose it is my house, at least for now… it appears to be a cylinder rising straight into the clouds and beyond until it vanishes beyond the capacity of the naked eye to make out.  There are so many reasons it simply shouldn’t be able to exist, and yet it does.

The name's England, but my formal name is The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.1
Better remember it, there will be a test!
Falling from the sky are memories of pain
Tomorrow and today, it'll rain, it'll rain
But I won't get out my mac, I'll move on without fail
'Tis a kingdom from where I hail, where I hail, where I hail.
To the pub, the pub, we go! Fish and chips!
Give the guy you hate a curse! Kill him in the way that's worst!
Do I believe in fairies? Ah ha, ha- of course!
Keep on moving on!
I'm so glad to have met you-
That is, if you understand sarcasm!
But let's crank a toast, shall we? What do you say, boys!?
AYE AYE, CAPTAIN!!
You know, people say my magic is nothing but a parlor trick…
Tea is much better than coffee- (*disgusted hacking*)
But, it would taste much better with some milk…
Why don't you take a seat, in Busby's Chair?
It's a one-way stop to hell, if you dare, if you dare
Unicorns and fey, they gather from near and far
On the Panjandrum we'll ride to the field- and CHARGE!
C'mon you blokes, let's go!
C'mon… Let's go!
To the pub, the pub, we go! Fish and chips!
You don't even have to think! All you gotta do is drink!
Do I believe in fairies? Ah ha, ha- of course!

Straud Mansion WIP
This build is my passion project right now. So far it has a:
formal dining room,
conservatory/breakfast/sun room,
eat-in kitchen,
music room,
parlor,
séance room,
two-story library/study,
game room,
smoking/gentlemen’s room,
two half baths on the main floor,
and two secret staircases.
There’s also a cold storage room and wine cellar in the basement. They’re accessible through a hidden staircase between the kitchen and music room. I’m also planning on adding a pool, and a crypt in the basement. However, I’ve hit a wall with the layout of the second floor and attic, and I’m incredibly grateful that @awingedllama has graciously agreed to take a crack at it for me. I can’t thank you enough, Anna!
So what do you guys think?

What Is a Planchette?
Simply put, a planchette is a small, heart- or teardrop-shaped tool used in a type of board game called a Ouija board. Many people out there believe that a planchette (along with the Ouija board) is a device used in “spirit writing”—a paranormal route to seek advice from the other side and even invite ghosts to haunt your home. For that reason, some refuse to even get near one. The word “planchette” comes from French (meaning “little planks”) and is made of wood, plastic or even glass, typically with a hole in the middle or a kind of pointer. Planchettes can also come in any size.
The Mysterious Evolution of the Planchette
It makes perfect sense that the origin of the planchette is clouded in mystery just like the tool itself. It appears the planchette—and Ouija board too—emerged at a time when America was obsessed with spiritualism, a belief that the dead can communicate with the living. Holding a séance on a Saturday night and heading to church the next day was totally normal—despite sounding bizarre, creepy and supernaturally spooky to us today.
At the height of spiritualism in the mid-1800s, the Fox sisters—in upstate New York, of course—claimed to receive messages and began to channel spirits in parlors all over New York State. Their popularity hit celebrity status and brought millions of occult fanatics with them who engaged in supernatural parlor games: seances, table-turning and experimenting with mediums.
Mediums (like the Fox sisters) quickly began to feel like their monopoly on the spirit world was being threatened by novices and amateurs desperate to try to imitate their craft, so they worked against that by suggesting amateur experimentation was dangerous. Despite their efforts, fascination only grew, and people soon felt the methods to converse with the spirit world weren’t effective or fast enough. Table turning, for example, took too long for questions to be answered so people grew bored. Likewise, the original form of the planchette and “talking boards” produced writings that were too hard to figure out, so new methods were designed.
And just like that, those who believed in communicating with these dark spirits found easier (and faster) ways to accomplish the task. Pointing to letters on alphabet cards, automatic writing and more direct channeling became all the rage. In the 1880s businesses and investors began to make and produce Ouija boards that offered a standard board marked with letters and numbers, along with a planchette to point to them.

BROOKLYN 45 - Review
DISTRIBUTOR: SHUDDER
Tumblr media
SYNOPSIS: Friday, December 27, 1945. Lieutenant Colonel Clive “Hock” Hockstatter has summoned four fellow veterans of WWII to his Brooklyn brownstone. Best friends since childhood, they’ve reunited to support their troubled host after the Tnanksgiving suicide of his wife. His invitation for cocktails turns into an impromptu séance when he admits to his friends that he’s begun exploring the occult. As they gather around the parlor table the metaphoric ghosts of their past become all-too-literal. Trapped in their host’s lounge, they find themselves put to one final test, with their only route to freedom potentially more bloodshed.
REVIEW: Ted Geoghegan BROOKLYN 45 is a rare gem that flawlessly embraces the history of the genre and the period to create a cinematic experience that is and deserves the title of “classic masterpiece.”
This award worthy screenplay is a masterpiece in character development, story arc, and suspense. I have to say that I felt like I knew these characters. Growing up, my maternal grandmother was one of 12 children. Her house featured a basement that had been finished in the late 40’s. Every holiday or family celebration we gathered in that basement, with a bar and fake fireplace. Many of my great uncles served in WWII, and through marriage it was like a mini United Nations. Geoghegan’s characters and dialogue brought to life those memories of those gatherings. As he lays the foundations of these characters and their relationships, he begins to weave in the supernatural elements and the drama/horror driving the tale. His writing is reminiscent of a classic noir film with ascents of an Agatha Christie novel and a dash of an old time radio drama style. In the hopes of finding answers, the character of Hock unleashes a hungry ghost that he fashions after those evil spiritual presences we’ve come to expect from Japanese mythology. Geoghegan also addresses questions of morality and ethics, and introduces a gay character that is thoughtfully entwined into the plot. The closing moments felt anticlimactic, but given the epic emotional journey it provides a soft landing.
Geoghegan has an amazing production team. From the production design, art direction and the costumes, the film captures the time period and brings the characters to life. There is attention to detail, from the button light switch to the design of the radio that brought back memories and felt authentic. The visual effects nicely accentuate the production designs and the practical effects demonstrate the filmmaker’s passion for the genre. I loved the effect used when the spirit emerges from the mirror. It had a classic ectoplasm look that felt a bit “Ghostbusters” and a bit Disney. Geoghegan’s opening and closing credits design pays homage to the films of the 1940’s and are a nice touch.
BROOKLYN 45 features an astonishing ensemble cast. I can recall seeing them in other films, but Geoghegan obtains performances that transcend anything they’ve done before. They take these characters to another level and you forget you are watching actors creating a role. Additionally, they bring to these performances a tone that feels like performances from that period, the 40’s. I am hard pressed to single out one actor, but I am unable to recall a performance where Larry Fessenden has delivered such an extraordinary, memorable, impassioned performance. You feel the character’s pain and need to take a breath when he is done. Regardless, these are powerful and passionate performances with the intensity of a stage production worthy of a standing ovation and multiple curtain calls.
Enhancing the performances and visuals is an amazing score by Blitz//Berlin. If you’re not familiar with them you should be. They are a trio of Canadian composers that create experimental music, and compose original scores for film, television, and movie trailers. They enhanced films such as “Psycho Goreman,” “The Void” and “Extraterrestrial.” For BROOKLYN 45 they provide small movements that underscore the emotional and supernatural moments. It never overshadows key performances, giving them center stage.
Ted Geoghegan’s BROOKLYN 45 is like finding a gem in a vintage store. His talented writing is brought to life by a sensational cast and his remarkable eye for detail. He combines his knowledge and love for the genre into a riveting tale that addresses timeless issues. He recreates out-standing, genuine characters that older viewers will feel they recognize. A unique and impressive tale that deals with the horrors of war, it should haunt viewers’ memories and be recognized come award season. BROOKLYN 45 is one of the exceptional films of 2023.

A Séance at Mrs Blythe’s House 🕯️🕯️🕯️
Featuring three of London’s rising experts in the paranormal: Lieutenant Edward Little of the Royal Navy, Professor George Hodgson of Oxford, and Reverend John Irving of Edinburgh. They have been personally invited by Mrs Blythe herself in her desire to prove, once and for all, that she has found a genuine psychic.
(for the prompt paranormal investigators @theterrorbingo)
The path leading to Mrs Blythe’s house is lined with tea lights; every window is likewise festooned with candles.
‘Lovely ambiance,’ George says with a smile.
‘A bit much, I’d say,’ John argues.
Edward ignores them both as he knocks on the door, the hollow clang of brass upon brass making his chest clench in anticipation. The butler leads them into the front parlor—dim if not for the low-burning fire and the trio of candles centered on the table.
The other guests are already here: a Mr Bradford, a Mrs Lewis and her daughter Helen, Mrs Blythe of course, and most interesting of all, the woman clad in velvety black from head to toe, her eyes closed as in a trance where she sits in the place of honor at the seat closest to the fire.
‘The medium,’ Edward says in a breath, unable to help himself.
George nudges him with an elbow, trying to quell his smirk. ‘Well, she looks a right serious one, doesn’t she?’
An even lower voice from John, derision clashing with the slight tremor in his voice; ‘A charlatan like all the rest.’
The butler announces their arrival, and with great flourish, Mrs Blythe glides across the room toward them, gesturing wide with her arms.
‘Gentlemen, welcome. We are almost ready to start, if you will take your seats.’ She turns to them with bright eyes. ‘Signora Gagliardi promises us a most enchanting evening.’
John scoffs, over which Edward immediately says, ‘Of course. We have been eagerly awaiting tonight.’
Signora Gagliardi suddenly cries out, both palms slapping the table as her eyes snap open. All conversation halts in the room; a couple of the guests even hold their breath as they wait for her to speak.
‘The spirits are restless tonight,’ she says in her heavily accented voice, melodic and hypnotic. ‘Come. We must begin.’
At her beckoning, everyone shuffles to their seats, but Gagliardi has eyes only for Edward, George, and John as the three of them sit opposite of her. She smiles at them, though with the hard glint in her eye, it seems more likely that she is baring her teeth at them.
‘Ah, the reporters, I believe Mrs Blythe called you?’
George answers, ‘Not for any newspaper, madam, only personal curiosity. Witnesses and skeptics of the supernatural, you might call us.’
Unblinking, she tilts her head, the smile still in place. John shifts uncomfortably beside Edward.
‘Well, let us see if I shall convert you all to belief after tonight.’ She lays her hands palm up on the table, instructing everyone to link their fingers together. She continues talking, raising her voice for the benefit of all the guests, ‘We may be in the presence of doubters, but I find that the strange and unusual always baffles the disbelievers. Tonight will be no different.’
Edward swallows tightly when Gagliardi meets his eye, her smile turning hard. John has dipped his head, glaring at the table. George is nonplussed as always, and he gives Edward’s hand a squeeze.
One by one, the servants extinguish the lamps in the parlor until there is no light but the three candles and the faint glow of the fireplace outlining Gagliardi’s figure.
