The developing relationship between you and Joohyun has been slow but persistent, and Joohyun is comfortable with the speed that the two of you were going, easing into a relationship which was no longer filled with hostility. Even though it may be due to her pride, Joohyun no longer found your presence unbearable. In fact...she quite enjoyed your company.
If she had to use a word to describe the state of the relationship between the two of you, she would use...friendship, perhaps, however could she really call it a friendship since the two of you were to be married? But then again, all relationships should have some kind of friendly bond, or at least a civil one since spouses are expected to live under the same roof together, and in your and Joohyun’s case, under the same castle roof.
But perhaps she is being too detached with the phrasing of the relationship, because the two of you did activities which were more...intimate than those of friends. Joohyun has always been someone who is control and prefers to keep others at a distance, simply due to her introverted nature that appreciated her own personal space. But lately you have been challenging the boundaries which she has put up, slowly but slowly climbing over them with your steady efforts of bonding with Joohyun like a lover.
Would lover be appropriate to describe you? She will admit, that the two of you have become more comfortable around another, to the extent that the two of you would physically show affection, publicly and privately. Joohyun is still trying to come to terms with her emotions regarding you, especially since she found herself becoming remarkably nervous and flustered whenever you would try be physically affectionate with her like a lover, such as kissing her.
Being kissed by you was a feeling of conflict. While she was nervous each time you did it, a sense of happiness also filled her when she would respond to it. The way you held her, gently but firmly, it gave her a sense of security, and when you would press a kiss to her forehead or cheeks in public, she didn’t shy away from it, instead, she would gaze you with a lingering look that represented a certain intensity. Her change in attitude towards you has not gone unnoticed, and others hoped that eventually that Joohyun and you will develop a relationship that will end up becoming a love match.
And deeply within herself, Joohyun hoped that maybe it can turn out that way too.
While she still struggles with her emotions regarding you, she has finally accepted that you have become something, or rather someone, more significant to her life other than a stranger she was expected to marry. You have made a mark in her life, and she was trying to adapt with your existence, and you did have an effect on her in someway, just the extent of it was revealed when she heard that you were unable to attend any events with her for about a week, or perhaps for longer than that due to an illness.
She was informed of you suddenly contacting an illness at dinner time, her eyes lingering on the seat you usually sat at during meal times which was empty due to your absence. Joohyun’s mother had heard the news from the physician, who was called to your chambers by your mother as she had walked in on you getting sick on the floor. Joohyun immediately lost her appetite at the news, but while it could have been due to the fact of the description of how your mother found you, it was really the worry she suddenly began to feel.
Sickness was not something that Joohyun was unavailable with, being a human being herself and fully being capable of being sick, and she knew that they have many of the best physicians in the world that will be able to tend to you, but the fact that she knew that you were sick and miserable in the castle, it unsettled her greatly, and when her mother informed her that it was best to leave you alone and to not interact with you for the next week, it filled her with distress.
Joohyun was a creature of habit, and lately her routine has been filled with spending more quality time with you, and to have that routine disrupted from some illness, it greatly upset her. She didn’t like it. She did not want to lose any of the time she has spent with you. The two of you have grown comfortable around each other, she would hate to lose any of the progress that the two of you have made.
She was...scared.
But not wanting to upset her mother, she agreed, but she found herself having trouble falling asleep that night, and for the next two nights in fact. While she carried on with her royal duties and outings with her friends and family, she somewhat felt lonely during the time she was supposed to spend with you. She did not know what to do with herself, any previous activities she used to do not tempting her enough any longer as she yearned to do the activities or converse in conversations that the two of you had and did together. And the fact that she only learnt more about your condition through her mother, who simply would give a brief description of your condition, it upset her even more.
Eventually she could not help herself anymore. When she had completed all of her duties and necessary social gatherings, Joohyun walked towards your chambers with determination, and ensured that you would be alone in your room with no relatives or physicians visiting you, as they were undoubtedly giving you the time to rest and heal. But Joohyun simply wanted to know about your condition through her own eyes, so she did not hesitate to open the door to your chambers and let herself inside, her gaze immediately directed to the bed.
You have always been a well-kept individual, ensuring that your appearance was pristine and clean, especially when you were with Joohyun as she valued cleanliness, but she saw that your illness has affected you greatly as you were entirely unkempt. Your hair was knotted and slicked against your forehead, your skin pale and sweaty and your breathing was very uneven. You were weighed down with several blankets, but you were still shivering, and when she walked closer to your bed, she heard slight whimpers leaving you, your eyebrows furrowed painfully.
You looked so weak...she hated it.
“Y/N.” She stated, simply saying your name because that was all she could say. She took a seat on the edge of the bed and hesitated before racing our and trailing her fingertips along your face, noticing how hot it was. “...Y/N.”
She has known you as being a strong person, because to be able to remain in control during the entire engagement with Joohyun was no easy task, so she knew that you were an individual of great inner strength, so to see you so weak and frail in bed, it upset her greatly. She was worried because you showed no signs of improving. The longer she sat with you, the more the worrying feeling intensified, and eventually she could not help but duck her hand under the blankets to grasp your hand, it feeling clammy against hers but she didn’t care.
“You have to get better. You have to.” She whispered, staring at your sleeping face intently while she squeezed your hands. “I hope you do.”
Despite the risk of it, Joohyun leaned down and pressed a kiss against your sweat forehead before placing a second one between your eyebrows, kissing the crease which has formed during your sleep. Whether you were aware it was Joohyun or not, you furrowed your eyebrows and smoothed out the crease, making it disappear entirely. Your head moved to the side in your sleep, now facing Joohyun as she continued to gaze at you. She leaned down and pressed a kiss to your cheek.
“Please get better.” She whispered against it, worry and concern filling her entirely as she continued to remain by your side during your slumber.
She wanted you to get better. No, she needed you to get better. She has grown so...attached to you. She does not want you to succumb to this, she needed you to return to her side, bright and healthy, stable and constant as she expected you to be.
Seulgi
Tumblr media
Seulgi has learnt many things about you, especially given that the two of you spent most of your time together given your relationship, and she knew that you were a creature of habit who always managed their time very well. So when you arrived late to breakfast, she knew that something must have happened because it was very unlike you to be late, especially since you were usually the one who would join Seulgi in the dining hall during meal times early so that the two of you could spend some extra time together.
You hastily apologized to everyone for making them wait, all of them waiting for everyone to join the table before eating, something which Seulgi’s mother always maintained as she always wanted guests and families to eat at the same time despite royal protocol. Accepting your apology, breakfast began to be served but Seulgi could not keep her eyes off you as she noticed that you were not behaving normally, nor looked as pristine as you usually did.
While absentmindedly picked at her own breakfast, she noticed that you did not seem to have an appetite of your own. In fact, you seemed to be paling at the sight of the food on the table, only helping yourself to some fruit but even then you did not seem that interesting in eating it. Seulgi noticed that you clothes seemed a little ruffled, not at all as clean and folded as you preferred as you often tried to keep your appearance as immaculate as possible, especially given your status as a royal. You seemed rather tired to Seulgi, the slight bags under your eyes informing her that you did not have a good nights sleep.
“Y/N.” Seulgi suddenly called you, catching your attention along with everyone else as they glanced at Seulgi as you lifted your gaze to look at her.
“Yes?” You said, your voice more breathy than usual. Seulgi frowned.
“Are you alright? You look rather pale.”
Your parents along with Seulgi’s glanced at your face, noticing your slightly paler complexion from usual, along with the bags under your eyes. You fumbled with yourself, moving your hands to wipe your cheeks before clearing your throat and flashing a wobbly smile.
“I am okay. I feel a little colder than usual, but I assure you that I am alright.”
While you words attempted to be soothing, they were anything but that because it was rather warm in the dining room because of the hot summers day outside, and the fact that you were feeling cold was a clear sign that something was wrong. Deciding to take initiative, your mother stood up from her seat and walked over to you before pressing a hand to your cheek and then to your forehead, her eyes widening.
“Y/N, you are burning up.”
You turned to glance at your mother, eyebrows furrowed, but before you could say anything to her comment, a sudden coughing fit took over and you suddenly hunched over your knees, handing in front of your mouth as you continued to cough, rather roughly if Seulgi must add. Concern immediately filled Seulgi and she placed down her breakfast spoon before standing up, only for her father’s voice to stop her in her movements.
“Seulgi, remain where you are, we do not need you getting sick as well.”
Seulgi frowned at her father but immediately returned her attention to you when you tried to control your coughing. You thumped at your chest with your other hand while keeping the other over your mouth, and you cleared your throat several times before attempting to look at Seulgi and her parents with a wobbly smile.
“I assure you, I am-”
“There is no point in trying to keep up the front Y/N, we can all see that you are sick.” Seulgi’s father said sternly, making you immediately cower into your seat as angering the king was not a wise thing to do. “To bed with you, I will have the royal physician sent to your chambers.”
“But I-”
“It was not a request.”
Your swallowed thickly at the king’s tone, but as you did so, you immediately began coughing again, worrying Seulgi even further as it was very extended and wet, which did not sound good at all. She glanced at her father.
“Father, I can-”
“You are not to go to their chambers Seulgi.” Her father immediately turned to her, a hard look on his face. Even though it was with innocent intentions, Seulgi couldn’t help but blush.
“I wasn’t-”
“While I am sure that you are worried, you will not catch whatever they have. Leave them to the physician, they will take care of Y/N. And while they recover, you will be carrying out your usual duties.”
“But father-”
“I don’t want to hear anymore of it.”
The king’s word was final, and even if Seulgi is his daughter, his words still extend to her and she knew better than to defy him, even if it means tending to her fiance. Seulgi slumped in disappointment and glanced at you as your mother helped you out of your seat, your father moving to join her in helping you move out of the dining room. You felt her gaze on you and you turned to flash her a comforting smile.
“I will be alright Seulgi, I am sure that it is nothing serious.”
“The physician will determine that.” Your mother quipped, making you turn to frown at her. She did not react to your look as she began to move you away from the table and eventually out of the dining room with the help of your father, leading you back to the chambers so that you could rest.
Seulgi slumped into her seat and frowned, worry filling her chest as she did not know what it was that was making her sick, which did not go unnoticed by her parents.
“Y/N will be fine Seulgi, you have nothing to worry about.” Her mother said comfortingly, flashing her a smile. Her father didn’t say anything, instead he pointed a warning finger at her.
“If you even attempt to sneak into their room.”
“Father!” Seulgi exclaimed, her cheeks going red once again even though she did not have any inappropriate thoughts about entering your room while you were sick. But her father maintained his stern look.
“I am warning you-”
“I won’t, stop being ridiculous!”
“I am just saying-”
“Oh dear, please leave her be. Do not act like you behaved differently when I fell ill during our engagement.”
Her mother’s knowing look and her father’s sudden flushed cheeks immediately made Seulgi raise an eyebrow, her worry subsided just for a few seconds before it turning into anguish. She did not need to imagine such things about her parents when she needed to worry about you. A very unpleasant distraction.

Seungwan knew that something was wrong with you because you were quiet, way too quiet for her liking. Despite being a royal, you were one of the loudest people that she knows, and you always made your opinions and thoughts heard, something which she found both endearing and annoying at the same time, but only when it contradicted her thoughts and opinions. But other than that, she has grown used to your loudness, so that meant it was very noticeable when you were quiet, such as now when the two of you were at a very public event.
Polo was a very big sport in Seungwan’s kingdom, it being a remarkable event of spirit and pride, especially since Seungwan’s mother enjoyed participating herself despite her royal status. While Seungwan did admire her father’s support for her mother, it was rather embarrassing sitting beside him when he cheered for her, especially since her was supposed be a figure of absolute decorum given he was the literal king of the kingdom, however he was anything but that whenever her mother was playing a game.
You and your family were of course expected to attend, and Seungwan was quite excited for you attendance as she knew that she could excuse herself from her father and save herself from second-hand embarrassment from his cheering with the excuse that she wanted to sit with her fiance. And it was not an excuse that she did not enjoy as she knew that she would be entertained with your in attendance, especially since you were fond of trying to make Seungwan smile and laugh whenever she was in your presence.
She had greeted your parents respectively before greeting you, pressing a kiss to you cheek as a controlled act of affection in the public space that the two of you were in. You smiled immediately at the action and brought her hand up to your lips and pressed a kiss to the back of it, Seungwan smiling at you.
“Hello.” She said, making you smile back.
“Hello my dear fiance.”
The two of you settled down in the two seats that offered a front row view off the game, where her mother has just run onto the field. Seungwan immediately winced at the loud cheering voice of her father and decided to distract herself by conversing with you, one of her favorite past times. However she eventually picked up on your unusual quietness. While you were not rude and did participate in the conversation, she noticed that you were a lot more quiet than usual, not snapping up jokes or making some silly comments about some of the polo players or of the other nobles that were surrounding all of you.
“Is something wrong?” Seungwan asked, not seeing the need to beat around the bush about it. You looked at her and shook your head, smiling.
“Nothing’s wrong. Why do you ask?”
While you were attempting to appear noble, she has grown to know you enough that you were forcing your smile. It was not the usual easy smile that you had, which slightly scrunched up your eyes and lit up your face. Instead it seemed like it was plastered on, and in fact, it looked rather wobbly to Seungwan, as well as strained.
“You’re being weird.”
“That’s not new.”
“More weird. You’re quiet.”
“I thought you liked it when I was quiet.”
“When have I ever said that?”
“Last week when we were in the library-”
“That was under different circumstances!”
Seungwan whipped her head around to see if your parents had overhead your loose words, shoulders relaxing when she realised that they were focused on watching her mother scoring a point for her team. She turned back to you and decided to properly take in your appearance, noting how tired you looked, along with how you seemed to be shivering slightly despite the warm weather that the day was having. Deciding to test a theory, she reached out and cupped the side of your neck, noticing on how warm it was.
“You want to kiss me here in public? Bold.” You teased, clearly your sense of humor still intact. Seungwan glared at you before moving her hand to your cheek and then your forehead, frowning as you felt unnaturally warm.
“You’re hot.”
“Why thank you-”
“Not in that way, as in temperature wise.”
“Ouch.”
Seungwan rolled her eyes before testing out her final theory, standing up and leaning into your personal space where she replaced her hand with her forehead, feeling the difference in temperature between the two of you. You remained utterly still at her close proximity,
“You’re running a fever.” She stated, finally pulling back. You flashed her another wobbly smile.
“Seung, I will be fine-”
“No you will not. It will only get worse if you stay out here. You need to be checked by a physician.”
“But-”
“No buts. I will not accept any excuses.”
She was not going to allow you to remain here when you should be back at the castle and resting. Deciding to remove herself and you from the event, you immediately went to inform Seungwan’s intentions of taking you back to the palace, as well as to her father. Neither of you were going to be missed anyway, she had to get you to your bed.

Something which Sooyoung has learnt about you is that you are very good about concealing yourself. Given the circumstances of the relationship between the two of you when you first became engaged, it does not surprise Sooyoung any longer that you had great control over your emotions and facial expressions, able to easily keep up a face in front of others. Sooyoung is no different from you, having mastered it for years due to her previous relationship.
However since the two of you have deepened your relationship to one of sincere love, she would have thought that she would have been able to look past your facade, or that you would not feel the need to keep one up around her, as the two of you bonded even more each day the two of you spent together. She did not suspect that anything was wrong with you, in fact, she did not pick up on anything for a while. But it was when eventually you were unable to control your body any longer and completely collapsed into Sooyoung’s arms did she realize that something was amiss.
While she did not want to admit it, she was in a state of panic when you fainted in her arms. Since she did not expect the sudden weight, she fell to the floor along with you, but she immediately panicked as she realised that you were not moving as your body pinned her to floor. She hastily sat up, hands immediately searching your body to find a pulse, fortunately able to find one so some of her panic subsided, but she immediately sought for help.
A pair of knights had happened to be passing by the area you and Sooyoung were resting it, so she immediately called for their help, or more like screamed for it because she was still in a state of panic and worry for you. The knights immediately assisted Sooyoung, lifting your body off of her and helping Sooyoung to her feet, but then immediately went to lift you off your feet and balance your weight between the two of them as they began to carry you to your chambers, being lead by Sooyoung herself.
When they all reached your chambers, Sooyoung opened up for the knights and instructed them to place you on your bed before leaving to fetch the royal physician, she intending to remain by your side until they arrived. The knights darted the room immediately after her orders, and Sooyoung immediately turned to you, worry evident over her face as she sat on the edge of you bed and pressed a hand to your forehead.
You were burning up.
She immediately glanced around the room, hoping to find something which will be useful, and eventually noticed the glass jug of water which was always left in the room of nobles in the castle that was half full, which was full enough for her. She immediately brought it closer and managed to find a small enough towel which could be used to try cool you down, Sooyoung pouring water on it before wiping at your face and eventually placing it on your forehead.
She then moved on to your body, not quite brave enough to undress you, especially given the fact that the royal physician was on their way to see you, and it would be quite scandalous if they caught her undressing you, no matter the engaged label of your and her relationship. The least that she could was to take off you shoes, which she did and she pulled off the socks, hoping it helped in some kind of way because she was out of her depth when it came to sickness and treatments.
Fortunately enough she was eventually put out of her flustered state as the royal physician came tumbling into your chambers, a focused look on their face as their eyes immediately zoomed onto you. Offering a quick bow to Sooyoung, they immediately set to work, pulling out all sorts of instruments out of their bag and turning their full attention to you as they asked Sooyoung various types of questions regarding your sick state.
“Have they eaten anything? When last have they had something to drink? Have they been coughing at all? Have they been suffering from stomach aches? Any headaches at all?”
Sooyoung tried her best to answer all of the questions, but her lack of knowledge just made her feel guilty and frustrated, because she should know them because the two of you were partners. Sooyoung just slumped her head and watched anxiously as they physician tended to you, although it was quite difficult to examine you thoroughly with Sooyoung in the room. The physician turned to her with s lightly stern look.
“With all due respect your highness, I need you out of the room so that I may examine them more thoroughly. It would be unwise for you to remain while I delve past their clothing.”
“Oh...o-of course.” Sh stuttered before hurrying out, closing the door behind her with slightly pink cheek.
The knights who had followed her previous orders were outside waiting, snapping to attention when Sooyoung appeared, much to her surprise. She quickly thanked them for their work and then requested for them to find your parents to inform them about what happened, which they immediately agreed to and quickly bowed to her before hurrying off to find your parents, leaving Sooyoung on her own. She sighed.
“Y/N...” She said forlornly, looking at the closed door of your chambers in worry as she counted down the minutes of when she will be allowed inside again and to be able to find out more about your condition.
She had probably waited for ten minutes when the door suddenly opened and the physician peaked their head out and saw Sooyoung.
“They have woken up your highness, they are requesting for you.”
Just hearing that you were awake was relieving enough, and she quickly nodded before walking into your chambers once again, her eyes immediately moving to yours which were open and waiting for her. You were more undressed that when Sooyoung left you, your shirt significantly unbuttoned with your sleeves and pants rolled up, obviously to provide you with more cool air and for examination. You also looked really tired, but you had a glint in your eyes when you reached out for Sooyoung. She immediately held your offered hand and took a seat on the edge of your bed.
“How are you feeling?” She asked, staring intently at your face as she tried to look for sick symptoms. You covered your mouth as you suddenly coughed.
“Not good.” You admitted, running your thumb along the back of her knuckles, a frown on your face. “I’m sorry about earlier. I...I didn’t mean to-”
“Why didn’t you tell me that you were sick?” Sooyoung interrupted, the question on the tip of her tongue and all but diving off it for an answer. You winced.
“I...I didn’t want to worry you.”
“I am your fiance, it is my job to worry about you.” Sooyoung scolded, her voice adopting a hard tone. You couldn’t help but flash a sheepish smile.
“I’m sorry.”
“Never do it again.” She ordered, making you laugh but quickly cough due to the irritation of your throat. You tapped her knuckles with your thumb.
“I promise.”
She was going to hold you to that promise, and even when your parents eventually came crashing into your room full of scoldings and words of concern, she did not let go of your hand, not that you minded as you knew that she was going to try care for you as much as she could as your fiance and lover.
Yeri
Tumblr media
She didn’t miss you, not for a second, she didn’t care if you had been gone for a week from the academy, it was nothing for her to be concerned with, in fact, it just gave her more peace. However, it was odd for her to return to the castle without your needless chatter following after her, or in fact joining her with a trip to the castle as the two of you were expected to spend time together as an engaged couple, something which Yerim found absolutely useless.
Yerim reveled in the freedom that she was granted, the gods apparently giving her some sort of mercy for all the suffering she had been put through from the useless engagement, and for the first three days, she quite enjoyed your absence from the academy. However, as days went on, she couldn’t help but frown at your empty seat at the back of the classroom, your sleeping figure not in it like usual whenever it was the afternoon classes. You have never been one that has enjoyed long teaching sessions, so of course you always slept through them, something which irritated Yerim because how was she supposed to trust her future spouse with matters of the kingdom if they don’t take advantage of the learning opportunities provided to them by the academy?
It was another reason why she believed the two of you were unsuited for one another, the two of you had different mindsets. The two of you were different in a lot of ways, and she should be enjoying the fact that she was free of you for a week, but as it was going onto the second week, she couldn’t help but frown at your continued absence.
“Just what is wrong with them?” She asked to herself, looking back at your empty seat once again while she was in the middle of her self-study session.
You have bunked lessons before, but not to this length, and suddenly Yerim felt herself growing concerned, because she has not received any contact from you or your family regarding your absence. Not that you or your family was obligated to, but one would think that they would inform her as your fiance to entail all the details about your long absence.
The decision to drop by your home was in the heat of the moment because Yerim simply just wanted to know the reason behind your absence so that she could inform her own friends that were curious about you. They constantly kept asking her if she knew why you were absent, and she was tired for not having the answer. That was the only reason. When she had left her carriage and headed for the front door of your home, the servants stumbled over themselves at the sight of their princess.
“Y-You’re highness!” The head butler squeaked, hastily opening the door for her which she marched through. She whirled around to face him.
“Tell me where Y/N is.”
“Y-Your highness?” He squeaked again, making Yerim glare at him.
“Y/N. Where are they?”
“I-In their room your highness.”
“Where is their room?” She asked, looking around immediately to try locate it, noticing the wide staircase which lead to the second floor of the house.
“O-On the second floor in the fourth room on the right, b-but they cannot be disturbed at-”
Yerim did not bother to listen to any more because she immediately walked to the staircase and up its steps, ignoring the bumbling of servants as they squeaked at the sight of her and hastily bowed, while watching the head butler chasing after her. Following the butler’s instructions, she found the door to your bedroom easily and without knocking, she opened and stepped into the room, only to be met with a putrid smell and the sound of gagging.
“Of all things holy.” Yerim gagged, covering her mouth and nose immediately as her eyes zeroed in on your slumped form on your bed, clutching a bucket to your chest that you were filling with your stomach contents. You glanced up from the bucket, eyes widening at the sight of Yerim in your bedroom.
“Why are you-” You cheeks puffed and you immediately directed your head back to the bucket where you emptied your stomach once again, the smell of stomach acid burning your nose.
Yerim stared at you, quite taken aback from the state she has found you. She did not even pay notice to the butler stumbling past her, brushing her shoulder as he hurried to your bed side with a new bucket, replacing it with the one in your arms before you quickly began to fill it again. You were pale and your hair was very unkempt. Even from where she was standing, she could see the dark circles under your eyes, and the sweat on your forehead which made a few hair strands stick to it, your body movements unbalanced as you shook slightly even while clutching the bucket with your head buried in it.
“You’re sick.” Yerim commented, the symptoms clear from where she was standing, and judging from how you look and how long you have been absent, it seemed to be quite serious. You glanced up  from the bucket again, some bile on your lip.
“Excellent observation skills.” You said, your sarcasm not at all affected by the sickness. Yerim couldn’t help but give a small smile at your quip.
“At least you’re not dead.” She said, making you let out a huff of a laugh.
“Disappointed?”
“Surprisingly not.” And Yerim surprisingly meant that. Even though your absence has been extremely noticeable, Yerim relaxed with the knowledge that you were sick and not in fact removed under suspicious circumstances. She felt somewhat...relieved now knowing that you were just sick. However for it to be for two weeks, it was concerning. “Are you dying?”
“No, but I feel like it.” You heaved, coughing into the bucket. You pulled back after your nausea subsided and wiped your mouth with a cloth beside your bed. “One of my relatives passed on a virus to me. Apparently I’m having a ‘mild’ case of it.”
“You look like death.” Yerim commented, making you laugh unexpectedly.
“Thanks, I heard it is the new look this time of year.”
Yerim shook her head, smiling behind her hand as she gazed at you. For you to still have your sense of humor, it must have meant that you were perhaps on the mend. But she was not going to show her relief of that, because you will never let it down.

The prince couldn’t bare the rustling of grass. Who knew what prowled in the field before him, with him? Creatures with four-legs seemed a reasonable conclusion, though unlike that which everyone worried about, Prince Neveer was more worried about a creature with two legs. Another human.
More alarming than anything, Neveer worried he was being chased by these other humans.
Damn it, he was always being chased. Always, no matter what. No matter the pacts he made, the treaties he signed, the princesses he swore he’d marry...no one knew those seals were made with his father’s ring, not his own. Or maybe they did. And maybe that’s why every noise in the tall grasses scared the prince so.
“You are a deer.”
The voice startled the prince so badly that he hurt his neck turning his head. His heart nearly combusted with how quickly it was beating.
Black hair, silver shoulders. The knight who rescued him countless times. The knight which Neveer spited every chance he got for his arrogance. He rolled his eyes and turned away.
“A small, quaint, and injured deer.” The knight added, after a moment of continued observation, “With scared, doe eyes.”
“How did you find me?” Annoyance laced the prince’s tone, but truthfully, he was grateful to see the knight’s face.
The knight shrugged, practically ignoring the prince, and came closer to him. His lips became pursed as he brushed a calloused thumb over a scratch on Neveer’s cheek. The prince, in turn, winced and smacked the hand away.
“Or a feisty cat. So feline with your pretty robes and shiny jewels. Not strutting now, are you?”
Neveer wasn’t a deer, or a cat, or whatever else the knight wanted to call him. He was a prince. A prince whose crown was constantly being knocked off his own head. How sad, he bet the knight thought of him. Neveer didn’t need pity; he needed-
“Home. Now,” the prince said.
“Not going to ask me nicely? Call me Sir, even?”
“You are titles beneath me.”
“And a foot taller than you.”
So Neveer was at a standstill. He knew the knight wouldn’t move another step until he got what he wanted. Gritting his teeth, the prince asked, “Will you take me home, Sir?”
“I think you might have forgotten a word.”
“Please! For the love of your commander, of your prince, and king. Please,” he shouted, “take me home!”
The knight smiled, looked Neveer up and down…hummed. “I like that,” the knight said, and began trekking through the tall grasses. “If you want to make it more than three steps into these grasses without stepping on a snake, how about you kneel and beg me to carry you.”
It was no suggestion. “Absolutely not. I do not kneel to you,” Neveer said. “You kneel to me.”
“You are going to say that to me now?”
The prince’s lip curled, challenging the only person capable of taking him home.
“I thought princes were supposed to be more levelheaded than this. Your dramatics are endearing, but we should really go before the sun sets, so do yourself a favour”- the knight smiled- “and kneel.”
Loosing a deep breath, the prince finally complied- not because he was lesser than the knight, or because he was weak-willed, or anything of that sort. Neveer knelt because even he, an arrogant and selfish man with too many rings on his fingers, knew better than to stay in a field of tall grass after dark.
“Will you please take me home, you-brilliant-knight-you? Carry me through the fields and leave me at the gates beneath the shadows of clouds, beneath the moon as glorious as your eyes.” The knight wanted dramatics? There they were.
Shrugging, the knight said, “I guess so, but only because you asked so very nicely, Neveer. Stand up, we have a long walk from here and we are losing sunlight with every heartbeat.”
“Sunlight does not matter when I have you to lead me,” the prince snarked. “If you ever pull this again, I will send you to the dungeons, do you understand?”
Laughing, the knight gloated. “You might have been exaggerating when you begged, but I know how you look at me, Prince. If you sent me to any dungeon, I am not so sure the chains would be used to detain me.”
