I rewatched SILENT HILL THE MOVIE, which made me remember how coughingly tragic and potential their love story was. Even more so than the original game from which it is based. 😢❤️

truly the Silent Hill movie isn't that bad, my theory is, if it wasn't a deviation from the original canon, it would be a beloved movie, like how Halloween three or Nightmare two were and still are hated because they stray from what people expected.

Padrão dos Descobrimentos, Lisbon (No. 3)
The structure is located on the northern bank of the Tagus River, neighboring the Belém Marina, Algés and Dafundo Nautical Centre, and the Museum of Popular Art (Portuguese: Museu de Arte Popular), and demarcated by stone pedestals with armillary spheres. Opposite the large square, and across the Avenida da Índia-Avenida de Brasília motorway, is the Praça do Império (Empire Square) which fronts the Jerónimos Monastery, Belém Cultural Center and the green-spaces of the Jardim Vasco da Gama.
The original structure, which Telmo, Barros and Almeida created, was erected in steel and cement, while the 33 statues were produced in a composite of plaster and tow. Ostensibly a 52-metre-high (171 ft) slab standing vertically along the bank of the Tagus, the design takes the form of the prow of a caravel (ship used in the early Portuguese exploration). On either side of the slab are ramps that join at the river's edge, with the figure of Henry the Navigator on its edge. On either side of the Infante, along the ramp, are 16 figures (33 in total) representing figures from the Portuguese Age of Discovery. These great people of the era included monarchs, explorers, cartographers, artists, scientists and missionaries. Each idealized figure is designed to show movement towards the front (the unknown sea), projecting a direct or indirect synthesis of their participation in the events after Henry.
The South African government was responsible for gifting the construction of the square in front of the monument: the 50-metre-diameter (160 ft) Rosa-dos-Ventos (compass rose) was executed using different types of limestone, including lioz, a rare type of beige limestone found only around Lisbon, more specifically in Sintra. Designed by the architect Cristino da Silva, it includes a Mappa mundi that is 14 metres wide, showing the routes of Portuguese carracks and caravels during the Age of Discovery.
On the northern façade flanking the staircase are two inscriptions in metal: on the left, "AO INFANTE D. HENRIQVE E AOS PORTVGVESES QVE DESCOBRIRAM OS CAMINHOS DO MAR" (To Prince Henry and the Portuguese that Discovered the Roads of the Sea) over a metal anchor; and, on the right, the words "NO V CENTENÁRIO DO INFANTE D. HENRIQVE 1460 – 1960" (On the Fifth centenary of Prince Henry 1460–1960), over a crown of laurel. The double staircase ascends one level, before the entranceway to the monument, allowing a perspective on the square and the lateral figures.
The interior consists of three areas: the auditorium with space for 101 people, a stage of 18 square metres (190 sq ft), with film projection booth; a secondary level with two halls for exhibition; and the last level with four rooms. Normally, the auditorium hosts a multimedia exhibition on the history of Lisbon, while the other rooms are used for exhibitions. The top of the monument (reached via a lift or stairs) offers views of the Tagus river, the Belém neighbourhood and its many attractions, including the Belém Tower and the Jerónimos Monastery, which date from the Age of Discovery.

Tudor- Brandon branch
"Mary visited London for the last time to celebrate the wedding of her eldest daughter, Lady Frances Brandon to Henry Grey, Marquess of Dorset, who descended from Thomas Grey, the elder son of Elizabeth Woodville (Queen of Edward IV) by her first marriage to Sir John Grey. Frances and Henry were to become the parents of the nine-day queen of England, the ill-fated Lady Jane Grey, who was executed on the orders of Queen Mary I. Recent research suggests that Lady Jane, the eldest, was not born at Bradgate but at the Dorsets’ London residence, on a date somewhat earlier than the usually suggested date of October 1537. The few verifiable contemporary comments on her appearance note that she was slight, and pleasant-looking. The prevailing perception was certainly that she was formidably intelligent and well-educated. The Dorsets appear to have been determined that their girls should develop practical and intellectual skills.
That Jane was also spirited and had a mind of her own even at a young age is evident from the correspondence of her learned tutor, John Aylmer, of whom she spoke fondly, with the Swiss reformer Henry Bullinger, who had sent to Jane and her father ‘a little volume of pure and unsophisticated religion’, with a dedication. Aylmer wrote to Bullinger that young people’s minds needed the counsel of older people and serious influences, thanking Bullinger for his contribution to Jane’s ‘improvement’. Tellingly, he employed the metaphor of ‘bridles for restive horses’.
Katherine, the Dorsets’ second daughter, traditionally considered the beauty of the family, is shown in the miniatures by the Flemish-bornminiaturist to the English court, Levina Teerlinc, as a fair-complexioned, golden-haired young woman, almost the stereotypical English rose. The third daughter, although uncharitably depicted as ‘dwarfish in stature’ – Lady Mary was only four feet in height – was disparagingly described by the Spanish Ambassador Guzman da Silva, writing to King Philip, as ‘little, crook-backed, deformed, and very ugly’, freckled and red-haired, like her sisters. Mary was undoubtedly intelligent, yet her career followed the fateful pattern set by others in her family. She not only fell in love but was determined to marry her beloved, despite the awful example of the retribution which befell her sister Katherine.
After the failure of the Lady Jane Grey plot, it became clear that the Suffolk claims were doomed to failure. It was even questionable whether Henry VIII had had the right to bequeath the crown as he pleased, albeit with the authorisation of Parliament. Moreover, the Will had not been signed by his own hand, as required by statute, but merely by dry stamp. There was much quibbling over the phrase ‘and if it so happen that the said Lady Eleanor die without issue, then we will that the said Imperial Crown shall come to our next rightful heirs,’ not ‘right heirs’, as stated in the first Act of Succession. Under Elizabeth, the legality of Mary Rose’s marriage to Brandon and hence the legitimacy of their children was thrown into question. With each succeeding generation, their connection with the throne grew increasingly remote."

Brazil’s hinterland now resembles Texas
It is a land of “roughs”, not playboys
Tumblr media
THINK OF BRAZIL and, if you’re like most people, you’ll think of palm-lined beaches, samba and caipirinhas. The cliché needs updating. In the past two decades the centre of political and economic gravity has started shifting from the humid coasts, to which Brazilians were said to cling “like crabs”, to the vast, arid plains of the interior. Its soundtrack is sertanejo (country music). The preferred beverage is cold beer.
Brazil’s census, its first in 12 years, showed a notable trend when it was published in June. Seven of the ten municipalities that have grown most are in the farmbelt in the southern half of the country and the centre-west. The population of the centre-west, which includes the states of Goiás, Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul plus the capital, Brasília (see map), grew by 1.2% a year, more than double the national rate. The south-east still has the most people and money—São Paulo state alone produces a third of Brazil’s GDP and is home to a fifth of its population. But even within that state, it is in the farmbelt where the population and economy are growing most.
Migrations within Brazil are nothing new. A movement from the poor north-east to the industrial hub around the city of São Paulo did much to shape the country’s economy and culture in the second half of the 20th century. Brazil’s current president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, is the most famous of the millions who made that journey. After a famine struck his birthplace in Pernambuco, his mother packed her eight children onto a pau de arara (macaw’s perch), a flatbed truck, and headed south. Lula rose to prominence as a trade-union leader in the car industry near São Paulo. Now when people leave the poor north-east they tend to head to the interior. What has changed is the perception of which activity can offer better lives, says Carlos Vian of the University of São Paulo. “Before, it was industry; not any more.”
The magnet that drew Lula to São Paulo has lost strength. In the mid-1980s manufacturing accounted for a third of Brazil’s GDP; now it represents just 10%. The country’s surplus in manufacturing trade, $6bn in 2005, became a deficit of $108bn by 2019. Productivity in manufacturing and services has stagnated or shrunk.
Cultivation, the basis of Brazil’s economy in the 19th century, has made a comeback. The country still exports coffee and sugar, which were once grown on plantations worked by slaves. Since the early 2000s voracious demand from China has encouraged a rise in production of soyabeans, grains and meat (see chart). Agricultural exports as a share of the total have more than quadrupled since 2000, to 40%. Today the sector accounts for a quarter of GDP and employs a similar share of workers. From 2002 to 2020 the economy of Mato Grosso, the soyabean heartland, grew by 4.7% a year in real terms, more than that of any other state and more than double the national rate.
The agri-business boom is slowly changing demography and culture. In the 1970s, more than four-fifths of population growth occurred in the biggest cities. In the past 12 years, during which the population grew more slowly, two-thirds of the growth has taken place in mid-size towns.
