What is your Hogwarts house?
I don't think that's considered a question in good taste anymore lmao.
And, actually, I never liked it much even as a kid, because sorting discourse did not adhere to the framework shown in the text. It consistently drifted to rigorous application of the ruleset laid out by the hat in its little song, which was blatantly called out as a convenient simplification about one page after the formula was originally presented.
Like. The fact that each cohort is broken down into four roughly equal pods and lineage is clearly a major determining factor, as is personal preference, is made clear very early. This is a cultural institution, that shapes the characters who grow within it quite as much as it's assigned based on their innate traits, and within the framework of which people actively look for identity elements to define themselves by.
People in my high school would be sorting adult fictional characters and doing elaborate balancing of their True Natures as revealed by their various plot events and defining life choices and patterns of behavior in their own generally dramatic canons and I'd be like. Okay, what do you think they were like when they were eleven though.
What were their values at eleven? What parts of their potential to be Like That were developed enough to show up on a psychic scan by a sapient hat, at eleven? What backstories are we assuming they're coming into this from; this man is a duke from fantasy medieval europe are we going to analogize him to a posh normie family, or the magic snobs, or are we dimensional-teleporting his baby self into wizard school?
Look, assigning Hogwarts houses to grown-ass adults on the basis of their adult developed identities doesn't make sense, that is very clearly not how anything works, this is a child-sorting algorithm. You have to apply it to children or it's invalid.
...also I was a Ravenclaw. I knew this. Everyone who had ever met me knew this. Any and every online quiz I was convinced to take knew this. I was so boring. I could not even make a serious case for my being one of the people who'd argue my way into another category I was minorly qualified for, or get there on family values or something, because I didn't want to not be a dumb nerd and my family is also dumb nerds. I was such an easy sort it was no fun at all, I was a walking stereotype.
It was embarrassing, is what it was. I was a flat character with no depth, rip child me. It was like if you could fail astrology by adhering precisely to your horoscope.
(My younger sisters wanted to be Gryffindor but consistently tested Hufflepuff and vice versa respectively, and I do not at this time remember which was which. The tests that gave you percentile rankings did give them minors in the ones they wanted tho.)
Anyway looking back on this in reaction to your ask, I find myself reflecting that House affiliation actually worked very much like gender, in that the way it was assigned was treated in-story as being based on absolute inherent qualities that defined a whole person, but quite clearly per the text actually worked by finding a schema you had an acceptable percent overlap with at a young age, and then setting you up to be perceived and instructed through that filter for the rest of your life.
The affiliation had meaning! But it was mostly meaning derived from the affiliation, and its social weight.
The ability of characters to find the sometimes deeply hidden Potential to live up to the person they aspired to be, thereby retroactively justifying the Sorting they had cajoled their way into, is like a major story element, you know?
I feel like this is yet another one of those places where rowling is a fairly gifted drawer of engaging caricatures; where when she was drawing on her actual lived experience (as opposed to hearsay and stereotype) to create something imitating that thing (in this case Belonging To Category) by intuition, the result would have nicely proportioned parts and some solid symbolic details, and work on an internal level more-or-less consistently, if not necessarily according to any strict logic.
Rather than being realistic it had a feeling of reality, which is in itself a perfectly reasonable way to approach light fiction. I often find myself wishing I could work in this more gestural manner sometimes, instead of drilling relentlessly down to detail.
The trouble is that things like those verisimilitudinous gaps between what people do and how they interpret their own doing, which lend the setting a great deal of dynamism, are only sometimes intentional, and the longer she extends any one bit and the more seriously she attempts to take it, the more likely she is to fall into the gaps and loudly deny that she has done any such thing, while digging herself into a pit of stupid.

The good thing is that for me it died down after a week? But yeah, my sister is the one to filter my ask inbox, that'd how I've avoided being spoiled in this front. She's quite strict with it, she said that anything that might imply a spoiler is taken down before I have a chance to see it.
That is a bit of a two-edged blade, because I can assume that things that are allowed through are either not confirmed or wrong, I just need to pick up the pieces and try to figure out which one it is.
On the other fronts, I don't go to the tags of things I'm liveblogging, i don't follow people that talk about those things and I try to not even click in links about those contents to avoid making the algorithm pick it up, hell I don't even look at what people are talking in my reblogs unless I get clearance for it. A block of spoiler tags also helps not seeing anything new, not to say not going to the trending tags during the weekends since it's when the chapters come out, I try to be as in the dark as humanely possible, it's been working quite nicely for the last, what, 4 years? lmao.

hey Ella! I wanted to get this off my chest for a while now. I really don't know how to phrase all of it in the best way but it's the fact that it's fun and more accepting to be queer online rather than real-world and I joined this fandom in 2014 because I saw how some of the one direction fans were so supportive of the LGBTQ+ community and how much love they showed them. I have always enjoyed this fandom so much and I love every single person here for being so generous and understanding towards the queer folks, it was amazing to experience so much love at least at some corner after a tiring day. and everyone at that used to support everyone no matter what they believed in, I mean het drama and fights were still there but no one at least felt so threatened whereas people are so pressed to the level that they will rip someone apart. and although harry has just got better and bolder with his expression and his love for the pride flags, at the same time now seeing how there has been a drastic change in the fandom that no longer seems like a safe place just makes me feel like throwing up. (sorry for venting I am really emotionally frustrated right now.)
i really understand :/ i gotta be honest, tho, i think the fandom tension is similar to when it was during the height of 1d's popularity, when there was a constant battle between queer and straight fans (to put it simply). i think it's a sad reality in this fandom in general, especially when it gets bigger: the majority of the new/casual fans know harry (or the other boys) from media coverage, not as who he really is. this has sadly always been the case, bc of how fucked up harry's image is created to the gp, yk. Harry Styles™️ is someone who attracts awful ppl, to put it bluntly, bc they're attracted to a womanising rockstar who'd love to fuck anything that came close. with harry, there was a brief point in time, at the start of his solo career, that the majority of his fans were the ones who loved him for who he is and stuck around to see what he'd do next. it was a smaller group, and a very queer one. his fandom is still super queer, but we get easily drowned out by the loudness of cishet thirst. that's why i ask ppl to not give up, and keep bringing those flags. bc one person doing it might motivate another to bring theirs, which might finally cause a movement like it has at louis's shows. at wembley i saw this grow already, so i know it's possible.
i hope you still find a corner of this fandom, online, to feel safe in, though. i know it can get nasty, but then i can only advise you to be strict about who you follow and what you see. i'm in a heavenly bubble here, and i see literally no discourse that might upset me. when i go on twitter, however, the algorithm shows me shit that i don't care about, so maybe that's a first step: if you're on there, limit your time. i honestly scroll to see what the ppl i know have said and then i'm out of there, bc i can't handle it. you truly, truly don't have to see what everyone's saying, have to know all the opinions this fandom has. same goes for tumblr. if you don't like what someone's posting, just unfollow. ignorance is bliss, and it doesn't make you less of a fan if you ignore the bad sides of fandom. i might argue it makes you a better one lmao. this is about you, about the thing you love. keep it all yours, don't let anyone ruin it for you!!

The wonders of Twitter, tbh he would probably end up on a very corporate or political side of it that a lot of . (Well.. more corporate than normal). Okay lets GOOOO, travel tips and money saving stuff for anyone who wants it!! I'm obsessed with travel I'm so sorry @ how long this is :')
Get the app, Hopper! It's free and it shows you the cheapest and most expensive days to fly, and allows you to track specific destinations and hotel prices - it has an algorithm which predicts price drops etc, too!
AirBnB has ethical issues, so I would research the local opinion on it - some locals really don't mind AirBnBs, some do, so research. But ngl, I use AirBnB in places that the locals don't have much issue with it.
Hostels are much better than hotels in terms of cost and usually have a much better vibe. I love hostels, my fave was in Copenhagen - it was like a little pod hostel, it was IMMENSE (cityhub CPH)!
Get in the mindset of having low standards lmao 2* hotels are your best friend for travelling cheap. My mindset is if it has a bed and running water, it's good enough for me!
Sign up to Jack's Flight Club, a free (with a premium option, but I only have the free one and it's AMAZING) it's an email list that sends you notifications about cancellations at insane discounts!! I love it so much I do plan on paying for the premium one eventually, just... money lmao so later
Skiplagged: this one is a bit sketchy on your part and sort of fucks over the airport staff, so I personally don't use it. Essentially, you book a flight with a layover - so say, Book to Oslo, layover in Amsterdam. You get it cheaper than a direct flight, but you just walk out of the airport at Amsterdam. This is called Skiplagging! You can't take any luggage, only carry-ons, and if the airlines catch onto you doing this you can get barred so like. yknow.
Secretflying: cheap flights and travel deals!
AirWander: This one is super cool and I love it a lot, but you have to be okay with short trips - like one day per city, or something. Basically, you book a flight with long layovers - a day, 12 hours, whatever - and you leave the airport in these layovers. This means you get INSANELY cheap deals bc layovers are 'undesirable' but you get a whole new stop in your itinerary!! I love this one!
SkyScanner is honestly really good for cheap flights. If you're flexible, search everywhere and sort by price - and by 'cheapest month'!
Airports are ridiculously overpriced as I'm sure everyone knows, so bring literally as much as you can to avoid having to spend money in the airport. They are straight up scams (but sometimes it's unavoidable, obviously!)
On that note, use Groupon and other discount apps and schemes for cheap food and such. They're really worth it.
Use the browser extension Honey - it's really really good for money saving, even if not directly for travel!
Check out different departure airports. It might be different for bigger countries but like, for me for example, I usually fly from Dublin rather than Belfast - it involves me taking a 2 hour bus down to Dublin, which is £16 return. But the flights from Belfast are SOOO much more expensive than from Dublin so it's actually way more efficient, so look around!
So in Norway, under 26s get youth tickets - ungdomsbillett? I think other countries may have similar schemes so look up "youth tickets" and the country if it applies!! Research lots!!
Make your own food and bring like sachets of soup, noodles, 'just add water' things in your luggage - especially to countries that are a bit more expensive! This helps a TON, seriously
Tripadvisor is honestly really good for finding recommendations for cheap food, places to go, etc.
don't buy any drinks etc on flights; again, they're such a rip off. Bring as much as you can or buy it in the airport - as much as airports are rip-offs, the plane is even worse!! Stock up before your flight!
Get a set of little reusable plastic travel bottles and fill them yourself with shampoo from home, makeup remover etc. instead of buying small travel-sized versions!
LOYALTY PROGRAMS FOR THE AIRLINES literally sign up to every free one you can - KLM's flying blue, for example. They reward you for the miles you travel with them and you get sweet perks as well, and it's free!! Ngl I do this for every single airline I travel with LOLLL I'm on like 9 loyalty programs
If you drink alcohol, check out the prices of alcohol before you go - if they're expensive, buy it in the duty free at the airport or bring it from home in your luggage. This is again something I super super recommend lmao
Buy yourself plastic freezer bags/ziplock bags and use those to hold your underwear, socks etc. Re-use them again and again - I've been re-using mine for five years LOL it saves space in your bag!
Again to save space in your bag and therefore keep costs down, roll up clothes and put them inside your shoes!
ROLL YOUR CLOTHES. ROLL THEM. Rolling is THE way to pack this is maybe the #1 most important thing it saves you an incredible amount of space. Roll everything.
Use hair elastics to keep shoes together or to keep your things rolled up - best for like thick jumpers etc!

Fun fact: god does this even count but. i'm feeling like going unhinged (for me) and going on a trip alone to south korea for however long my money lasts or until i'm not having fun. i've never been overseas or properly travelled let alone travelled alone, i know less than 100 words of the language (i'm speedrunning rosetta stone but it's not gonna be enough if the trip happens in the less than a month my unhinged-ness is leaning towards for irl reasons), i've never even had korean food i just know their stuff is healthy (and spicy. so i may just die on day 1 who knows lol)

The playing card theme is to illustrate the many parallels and contrasts there are to Azula and Katara. Wrote a lil' something to go along with it but it ended up being quite long so...oops lmao. Also open to suggestions for who to draw next!!
The way Katara and Azula mirror and contrast one another has always been fascinating to me. They're brilliant foils of one another not just because they're literally on opposite sides in war or because of the symmetry of fire and water, of drawing energy from the sun vs. the moon, but because of the way their stories seemingly echo each other's but then diverge, highlighting Katara's triumph and Azula's tragedy.
They have shown immense potential in their ability to bend their respective elements, and they become so technically advanced they can lightningbend and bloodbend. Azula hones her skill with precision and ease from a young age, in an environment that allows her to cultivate her talents. Katara's journey in mastering waterbending is experimental and without guidance until she leaves her tribe. Azula's prowess is plain-to-see, whereas Katara's potential is initially merely foreshadowed — like in the pilot when her emotions cause her to waterbend powerfully, but inadvertently. Azula revels in her ability to bend lightning and uses it incessantly, but when Katara bloodbends, it is by force and she continues to be horrified by the idea of controlling someone that way.
Katara's compassion and warmth and Azula's cruelty and cunning are talked about a lot. These are traits that typically define them, but I think they're also a product of their communities and relationship with their mothers. Katara grew up in a tight-knit community, in a loving family until Kya was murdered. She embodies this and fills the role of a mother figure through her attentiveness for Sokka, then for the rest of the Gaang. Azula grew up with the pressure of perfection, arguably in an oppressive nation, and doubts Ursa's love for her. She internalizes this, and then perpetuates it by using fear to control those around her.
But Kya and Ursa also form an emotional core to Katara and Azula's characters. They are at their most vulnerable because of their mothers and we see an almost jarring swap in the way they act. When Katara confronts Kya's murderer, there's a banked ferocity in her that rears its head. When Azula returns to the vacation house her family visited when Ursa was around, we see Azula as a regular 14 year-old girl — she gets jealous and lashes out at Ty Lee, but then apologizes and takes her advice. She reveals just enough sincerity and insecurity thinking about Ursa to give us a glimpse of her sensitive side.
Of course, any desire of Katara's to act in vengeance is tempered and she doesn't end up hurting her mother's murderer, and Azula proceeds to make a flippant remark that firmly shuts the door on the softer side of her before we can get another glance.
They're also victims in their own way — Katara of trauma and Azula of abuse. But where Azula's story ends in tragedy, Katara triumphs. She receives external love and affection and it shapes her; she's attentive and caring and nurturing and this forges a support system of friends that ground her, but they also lift her up and protect her. Azula doesn't stay a victim either, perpetuating the damage that turned her into the monster she believes she is. Azula's support system is non-existent at worst and tenuous at best, partially by her own doing, so when she's on the brink, she plummets. In the end there's no one to protect her — Mai and Ty Lee have stood their ground, Ursa's long gone, and she's just something to be jettisoned to Ozai.
This is also why Azula's character is so heartbreaking to me. You can see the faintest shadows of a version of her skirting around the edges of Katara's story. But then you remember how their stories diverged — how she's responsible for her actions despite the sympathy you have for her pain, and a bright light is cast on the Azula that ends up shackled to a grate, because this is the only Azula that matters to the people that she's hurt.

out of the blue you ask gojo to hold up his hand and when you put yours up, your eyes go wide bc his your fingers reach the middle of his!! you’re moving onto geto before gojo can even react. you leave him standing in the middle of the hall.
geto’s confused at first but goes along with it anyway. his hands are a bit thicker and rougher than gojo’s, but roughly the same size. when you move to pull away his hand wraps around your wrist, stopping you, and he stares.
geto has to excuse himself right after.
and then shoko's hands!! they're dainty and elegant and the perfect size to hold!! she takes good care of her hands too so they're manicured and soft to boot. for the next couple of days the two of you stroll the college holding hands 🥺❤️

some time ago i saw a pansexual quoting a bi joke on twitter explaining how pan, queer and unlabeled people are usually forgotten on this type of posts and the person quoting was faced with so much criticism. i know commenting on those posts directly is not the best choice to show our point and the person was kind of rude. but i have been thinking a lot about this topic lately. for example: i don't know if it's some algorithm thing for me but pan related comments are quick to show up on tiktoks or tweets regarding attraction to multiple genders. those comments are usually pan people relating or making their versions of the same thing. by one side, i feel like i am invading their space and don't wanna be disrespectful but, on the other hand, we get so little representation that feels nice to connect with something even if it's not directed to you. i don't know what my point is, sorry, guess i just ranted

idk like i get wanting posts to be about one identity or whatever, but the more i think about the concept of “derailing” queer posts, the more i’m like....why are we so angry when different queer people relate to our posts or add their experiences to our conversations, as long as it’s done in a good faith way and they aren’t trying to take away from the conversation, but simply add another perspective to it?
i understand the kneejerk “that’s not what this post is about” reaction, but the amount of aggression and “call outs” that happen sometimes is a little worrisome.
people often reply to my posts saying “and x identity!” and stuff like that, and sometimes others keep adding on, making it like a chain of positivity for a bunch of queer people. and i kind of feel like that’s kind of how queer spaces should be??
i’m not saying we shouldn’t ever have our own specific spaces (hi hello i have pan specific blog) but we need to remember that even with different identities, we all have a lot of similar experiences and we *are* one community. the way we’re so quick to hate and fight with each other over every little thing is really sad. (coming to mind right now is the hate directed toward the gay man flag from other queer people, specifically lesbians who think it’s a rip off of their flag).
