oda headacanons masterlist
not a mandarin-speaker; maybe hokkien/a wu dialect (ik my friend likes toying with him being wenzhouese) ? regardless his mandarin is shit but he can understand it well enough to get by⁰*
the other guys in the bats speak in similar dialects, they all met through the previous gang they were in, but most of them are considerably better at mandarin than he is
got around to understanding mandarin mostly from work/life experience
tachibana and oda usually speak to each other in japanese, or tachibana will say something in mandarin and oda will respond in japanese
he got to the name “jun oda” because it’s a translation/transliteration of his chinese name
“oda” coincidentally had characters that sound like “weitian”, which in his case is spelled differently (尾田 is a common japanese surname but reads like a japanese name in the same way “pierre” reads like a french name)
also got to “jun” because it sounds like “chen”. his surname (he uses 純 for jun which is “chun” in chinese, chen>chun>jun?)
realistically i’m pretty sure this is just writers deciding on a japanese name before a chinese one and choosing common japanese names for him
generally an insecure person with a tendency to compensate
tachibana has [slightly] more chest hair than him and he’s insecure about it
also has trouble growing facial hair, he can keep his stubble for months w/o it changing much
considers himself to be short despite being like 6′ something because he’s seen a few guys taller than him like once
consistently worries tachibana will stop liking [slash loving] him someday despite the fact that he literally lost his arm to save his life. this got a lot worse after the documentary
tachibana is not very expressive/showing of affections in the way oda is and oda still isn’t 100% used to it
“city boy” who grew up in bad conditions & with abusive/neglectful parents which more or less gave him an easy transition into involvement w/ gangs
not necessarily a headcanon but he gives me only child vibes in the “your mom died giving birth to you” sort of way
i feel like the attitude he has towards tachibana of “putting him on a pedestal” (for lack of a better term) speaks to some sort of difficulty in thinking about relationships in a non-conditional way
i also think he has this relationship w/ his past, see below
came to japan before 1976 (he was a stowaway, so...) at 17/18
open about his past up to a certain point (and especially not after the documentary). leaves gaps that sometimes tachibana can find out on his own and other times are ominously absent, very contrary to tachibana being 100% open w/ him (& the other bats)
(cw sex trafficking/sexual assault ??? ) the way both he and makoto phrased it makes it sound like it was a deal where he was tasked with finding women & sending them somewhere specific (to put it lightly), sort of a middleman? since he was involved w/ gangs it makes the most sense to me
(cw 2) i’m undecided about whether he continued trafficking with the bats
he absolutely feels remorse for what he did, especially after meeting tachibana, and even moreso after the documentary
i think it was in a similar sort of step to tachibana in that he was repressing the remorse/trying not to think about it but after the documentary he couldn’t ignore it anymore
in our modern lgbt parlance he would be considered “bi”, but if you asked him he would be very confused because he doesn’t think about stuff like that very much. have not decided if i think he’s trans or not yet
was masc 4 masc in the strict proto-instagram gay “hunks only” way before meeting tachibana. his type for women is similarly gendered (big tits long hair etc) but that hasn’t really changed
(if cis) whenever he found tachibana was trans he had the normal cis person questions but it didn’t really shock him too much bc he’d seen and slept with trans women before. ultimately it didn’t affect the way he viewed tachibana, and it’s not like he would reject tachibana in any way for any reason lol
sex wise he and tachibana switch but tachibana is the more “dominant” one with a bad habit (which started mainly when oda started being more distant) of giving into what oda wants bc he likes keeping him close
like how tachibana isn’t expressive he is also silent during sex. like not a peep. he has to consciously think of things to say. oda isn’t 100% used to that either
not neurotypical. idk how but he isn’t
some sort of writing/speech/language-related learning disability? (dyslexia?)
uh misc
black and white thinker. not introspective at all. nothing is “maybe” with this guy. arguably canon
and tachibana isn’t and his clothes are black and white and oda’s are colorful and

the way he dressed seems to me like the equivalent of someone with only 80s clothing at their disposal trying to dress in a 70s fashion. may be inspired by older movies/stars?
color and pattern-matching tended to not get too out of hand for more mainstream/trendy stuff but was a little more bold-colored and tastefully mismatched in the 70s
if only he’d lived seven more years...
big big big versace guy. if not versace then versace-esque clothes. loves that 80s color-blocking patterns thing
annoying to go to the movies with because he talks the whole way through and asks questions that could be answered by just watching the movie
got a woman pregnant once at a one night stand. not paying child support or anything like that. no interest in being involved in the child’s life at all***
tachibana knows (oda never told him, he found out on his own) and is ambivalent about it

Let me just make a list of why I disagree and at least organize my anger. Long post incoming.
Vander was friends and had a deal with Grayson. The sheriff. Idk what else to even add to that
Caitlyn is more than a cop and Arcane isn’t copaganda. Genuinely don’t know what kind of progress some of these people are looking for. Real allies are a necessity for real progress.
SILCO IS A CLASS TRAITOR. HE FUNNELLED DRUGS INTO THE UNDERCITY AND PUT POOR KIDS IN FACTORIES FOR THAT DRUG FOR PROFIT!!! HE PAID THE ENFORCERS TO LET HIM DO IT WITHOUT CONSEQUENCE
Vi is not as much as an activist as you would like to believe
WHY IS EKKO NEVER EVER BROUGHT UP IN THESE CONVERSATIONS????
Silco was not good for the Undercity
Silco was not a great guy. Ekko had to build an entire separate hidden community for the people he hurt and stepped on for his own benefit
Caitlyn is ignorant and naive. That’s ok. That’s what character development is for.
Loving imperfect characters like Silco and Jinx then hating characters like Vi and Caitlyn is peak media illiteracy to me

Caitlyn was the first person in years to show Vi kindness and care. She listened and stuck by her and took care of her after Vi was locked up for years and beat up by cops (i wonder what led her to be thrown in there?). Cait being a cop stopped being a point of contention once Vi recognized her naivety and genuineness.
NUANCE NUANCE NUANCE. ITS NEVER EVER BLACK AND WHITE
The only way I can see Vi touching ‘class traitor’ in season one was the shimmer raid. Guess who the hell put those kids in there in the first place.
Just hanging out with Caitlyn isn’t being a class traitor if Vander’s allowed to be friends with Grayson.
Critical thinking is very necessary for watching shows like Arcane
What the hell did Silco really do for the Undercity???? What changed over the 7(ish) years he was basically in power of the place? All I’ve heard was he made the air cleaner, which would be great except for, you know, shimmer and the child factory workers
Jinx is unwell and feeding into it like this in a fully serious manor would not help Arcane as a show at all
What do you want Arcane’s message as a full show to be? ‘Screw cops’? That’s a little boring and unproductive isn’t it?

Caitlyn is trying to make Piltover and Zaun a better place. Is that not allowed? Am I missing something?
Caitlyn and Vi’s arcs have only just started. Season one is basically fully set up except for characters like silco and Jinx. This is far from the end.
Genuinely think Vander would appreciate Vi for being friends (using this term loosely because they are in love) with Caitlyn considering he was the one who was opposed to war and Vi wasn’t.
Silco should NOT be your idea of Undercity independence and respect. He oppressed the Undercity the same way the Council and the Enforcers did. He helped no one but himself, his team (barely) and Jinx.
You’re allowed to like and dislike any character you want but pretending like Silco is better for the Undercity than others is just so ridiculous to me. Everyone is of course completely allowed to like Silco, but we can’t pretend like he’s this stand up guy. If you have to pretend like he was, maybe you don’t like him as much as you think.
“Because Cait’s pretty” is also incredibly incorrect. Go check point #14.
Vi never stopped loving and caring for Powder. Powder’s mental health issues were amplified and utilized by Silco because he couldn’t even heal himself.
If all of your opinions of Caitlyn and Vi start and end with “cops suck” and “class traitor” then you genuinely don’t respect Arcane as a show enough to show you nuance.
The misinterpretation of characters is just so … it’s like you go out of your way to love and/or hate characters no matter how much they show you who you are.
Your closed mindedness is clouding your judgement and making you out to seem like you don’t actually want the Undercity’s triumph, you want Silco and Jinx’s, even if it means ruining the Undercity. And that would be fine because father/daughter evil duo but trying to say you’re all for this duo because you want what’s better for the Undercity when they continue to hurt it is simply not correct and very harmful (to fictional characters in a fictional universe 😭)
Only being able to understand how Silco and Jinx were oppressed and therefore should be able to not just destroy Piltover but also Zaun is not the eat you think it is
Why is Viktor never called a class traitor? I think he's great (I also think Silco and Jinx are wonderfully written) but we hardly saw him in the Undercity/ interact with people from the Undercity plus he killed someone (Sky) from there (accidentally)
EDIT TO ADD ANOTHER POINT: Caitlyn has shown little to NO malicious intent and has no real negative impacts other than Jinx’s attachment issues and insecurities being amplified by her mere existence. Again, this is her story and development. Throughout the season she is exposed to reality and recognizes her and her peers/ families wrongs. I have no idea what you want from this character. Should Piltover just be gotten rid of in the story? Then what? Should Caitlyn have just never gotten involved and continued to embrace her privilege? Should she have left Vi in prison and stay ignorant?

i keep thinking about Signalis in like a broader mechanical world sense or whatever, like, how much of what happened really physically happened, was the reality breakdown at Sierpinski localized or did it effect the larger universe, etc. but the more i think about it, the more i think my honest opinion is that all of that is kind of missing the point, and all that really matters is them.
like, i definitely don't buy the idea that everything is figurative. i do think Ariane's uniquely powerful bioresonance caused the larger events of the game, and i do wonder what exactly she found on the prologue planet and what exactly she became, and to what extent the events of the game were directly or consciously her doing. but i pretty much always just end up coming back to her and Elster celebrating their anniversary together on the Penrose, Elster's single-minded determination to find her and make things right, no matter how many cycles or iterations it takes, and the fact that the hidden ending has them dancing together one more time in the ruins of the Penrose (which i honestly believe to have been the promise all along). it's all them, desperately trying to see each other again, and everything else is secondary. tertiary even.
this has definitely all been said before, and better, but I'm just obsessed with them, and i had to write something down about it. I'll definitely be watching the dance scene several more times today.

I'm hearing "burning briges." I think there's someone that was once very important to you that your cutting your of your life. Spirit is telling me that this had to happen, it was an inevitable change that was always going to be part of your journey. It's an ending that was always going to come, that was necessary, and that's ok. Good things will be coming.
Maybe that's what you needed to here, that this time in your life, as heartbreaking as it is, is making room for something new, better, to come in. I feel called to tell you a story from my own life. Recently, I lost a very close friend of mine. We suddenly grew apart and I was plagued with doubts, wondering if I had done something wrong, if it was my fault. It's been months since I left them and cut them out of my life, and now I realize it was them. They suddenly pulled away and made it so I felt guilty about it, made it seem like it was my fault. It wasn't, they were just being cruel, even though I don't think they intended to. But I needed that to happen, I needed to realize they were a toxic person in my life and to be free of them. Now I feel better then ever, and I feel bad for the past me, who thought it was all my fault. I felt so alone. I fell into a deep depression and wouldn't tell anyone what was going on until I had cut that person out. But I'm glad it went through it, because it made me better for it, it made life better for me.
And if, IF, for whatever reason, you think you did make a mistake, no if's and's or but's, then that's ok too. We are human. We make mistakes sometimes. It's ok. We can grow from that too.
I'm sorry you're going through whatever it is you're going through pile 3, but know that it's not your fault, and you didn't make a mistake. It's ok. You're growing, and that means change. It means growing pains. It means leaving things behind. You will get through this pile 3, even if it takes some time. You will become better from this. This isn't your fault.

I feel like not enough attention is given to the fact that the spirit of Revachol herself directly tells Harry that she needs Harry and Kim to stick together. I wonder how many people missed it because they reset the game the moment they failed the Authority check to ask Kim to dance. I don't blame anyone who did because I very nearly did so myself.
But listen to me, listen to me, the events that happen if you let the failure ride are so important.
La Revacholière, the spirit of the city, reaches out to Harry and tells him that she sees him, she loves him, she watches over him. And what does Harry say when faced with the personification of the city herself?
He panics over the fact that he hurt Kim. And La Revacholière agrees with him that this is the most important thing to be worried about in this moment.
She begs him to make it right.
