Hole

Heavy is my heart tonight.

I can feel it breaking on the inside.

As I think of the children lost.

And the thoughts they had before the gun went off.

Did they want their mom or dad?

Did they scream out, did they hold back?

Did they think about this morning eating breakfast and drinking juice from their favorite glass?

Not knowing that this morning was going to be their last.

Last time being at home where it's safe.

Last time getting a kiss on the face.

Last time walking into those school doors.

Last time being in school forevermore.

This cuts worse than the others.

Now that I myself am a mother.

To imagine what if that were my child today.

I would never fucking be the same.

I held onto her so tight last night.

Told her I loved her at least a million times.

Hoping she knew how much I meant it.

Praying to God she doesn't ever forget it.

So now I lay me down to sleep.

Grateful for even having the chance to breathe.

Praying for the souls that were lost in that room.

Hoping they found comfort wherever they flew.
