Sakura: Are you scared of crows, Naruto?
Naruto: N-no...?
Kurama: I mean he did have to swallow one so it's only fair.
Sasuke, spitting out water in the background: He had to what?
Kurama @ Naruto: Just you wait 'till he finds out about the frog.

im watching the will of fire naruto movie and there's a scene whete tsunade basically says that she won't sacrifice kakashi b/c it'll mark her down as the worst hokage in history.
its very interesting to me b/c thats what shinobi are conditioned for like its about sacrificing yourself for the village or whatever they tell them. tsunade would know that b/c she grew up under hiruzen's era and he was her teacher, but i wonder if her saying that is influenced by her grandparents. hashirama founded the village b/c he had a dream and wanted the clans to work together and protect one another, and mito sacrificed herself for her husband (mainly) and the village.

Post of Kankuro/Sakura appreciation.
August, 2023
They are sooo perfect together and they both have so much potential… So underrated! I don’t get it why this ship isn’t that popular in fandom. I’m planning several arts of them together
Some details about the piece: this art takes place during the 4th Great Shinobi War. There was a great explosion of one of the Medical Units caused by the enemy that’s why there’s so much shock and pain on Sakura’s face.

Madara & hindu cosmology
Tumblr media
It's a thought I had following this post here
It's interesting that Madara never wished to resurrect his loved ones contrary to Obito. It seems that Izuna's death but more precisely the valley of the end’s defeat marked for him a definitive rupture with "this world". He was not interested anymore about his own desires. If you think about it, he was not supposed to be part of this collective dream that could have longed an eternity from the perception of those inside the dream. If everything had gone according to his plan, he would be just there alone watching people slowly dying in their cocoons.
Actually, I’ve realized recently that from my western perspective, I didn't pay attention to the Buddhist cultural aspect and in some instances the hindu cosmology. There is between both religions cultural bridges that we can't really see in the West shaped in judeo-christian background but from an asian/japanese audience it's implicit. In hinduism there is this idea that the material world is but a creative dream from the imagination of a god. He manifests himself in a sort of trinity:
Brahma the creator
Vishnu the protector
Shiva the destroyer (in order to recreate a new world) and note that Shiva is also associated as the Lord of dance. Shiva Nataraja destroys the cosmos, each steps is creating movement in the dissolution of the universe. It's a doomsdays to end a cycle and allow a new one to be born.
Tumblr media
Shiva Nataraja, Lord of dance and destruction
Madara's plan is a way to attain this godhood state, to annihilate the world and recreate it again. We first met him during the apex of the 4th shinobi war, impersonating in a way Shiva, he destroyed the current shinobi world. From his perspective it's a failed world, or should I say a dream who turned into a nightmare, created by another god Hagoromo and perpetuated by his spiritual heirs Hashirama/Naruto. Obito in creating the Akatsuki and collecting the Bijuus, was incarnating one of Shiva's steps. He was preparing the dissolution of the world by perverting the shinobi system and hastening the apparition of the true "Shiva".
Madara’s Brahma phase can be paralleled with him being the second Sage Rikudou and having access to all the chakra on Earth and opening his third eye which represents in hinduism and buddhism the invisible one who brings mystical illumination and visions in the realm of high consciousness. If his plan would have succeeded he would have been a type of Vishnu protecting the new world. Alone, but keeping safe humanity inside his dream.
And as odditiesinnaruto said, time in a dream can be infinite. If Izumi was able to have a whole life with Itachi and "dying old", Madara must have been capable of putting someone in a dream where they exist and continue their life through their imaginary descendants for generations and generations, for centuries and millions of years which represents few seconds in real life. He would have literally created a Madaraverse inside the zombified Narutoverse (it sounds really like the movie Inception). And in his dream, somewhere the Uchiha clan and the whole world will "exist" in peace forever. It gives me vertigo!

I have a bit of a strange art request...
Post 4th Shinobi War Obito + gardening
The context is that somehow I ended ranting about how Naruto ended to my mum, and... then she started to VERY strongly insist that Obito would definitely pick up gardening as a hobby had he survived the war lol
Why does she insist on that? I don't know. She wouldn't explain.
But, I would love to see this in your style, I honestly adore your art :D
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
*Tenzo mokuton-stopped Naruto and saved the teddybear sunflowers, but the tiny Tsukuyomi flower had to be weeded out. What if it summoned a mini-Kaguya?
Art request #12. Thank you! It was fun to draw! (And don't forget to show it to your Mum!)

okay naruto mutuals/followers i need your help
I'm writing the next scene in my (very self-indulgent, may some day be posted) naruto oc fic and i need to know whose perspective to write from next 👀
my two ocs are making a Dramatic Entrance™️ to the battlefield during the third great shinobi war (before kannabi bridge, so obito is alive if that affects your choices) and i need someone to see it. Extra context for each option under the cut
feel free to click one even if you aren't a naruto fan and you're choosing from vibe alone. Also feel free to reblog it, it would honestly be funny to get a ton of votes for a fic no one knows anything about
*please see under the cut for explanation/further info
Orochimaru: mentor and future enemy of one of the OCs. future mentor of the other OC
Jiraiya: currently knows the bare minimum about either of the OCs and would spend most of the fight going "who are these small children and why are they like this". will be going on an adventure with one of the OCs in the future, so there could be callbacks to this scene there. could make it fun
Team Minato: pre-kannabi bridge, so this includes Obito. Would probably be written specifically from kakashi's perspective, possibly from Obito’s. One OC has been friends with kakashi since infancy
Team Choza: would be specifically guy's perspective. Guy has been friends with one of the OCs since birth, and taught her taijutsu
Kages: there's already been a scene from onoki (stone's tsuchikage) and hiruzen (leaf's hokage) so that would leave mist (i don't know anything about who the current mizukage is so it isn't likely I'll choose them), cloud (I'd have to check the timeline but this should be before the raikage we see in the 4th war becomes raikage), or sand (gaara's dad)
Main OC's siblings: "main" OC has a sibling in each of the hidden villages and one in the land of iron. The land of iron sibling has no reason to be on the battlefield so he's off the table. There's a good potential for angst if we choose one of the siblings because the OC is going to decimate their forces. We'd get a scene later of that OC being confronted by a sibling who lost friends and comrades to the OC's violence here
Danzo: already at odds with the "main" OC and completely neutral to the other OC. He and main OC will be trying to kill each other later in the storyline.

Fic Masterlist
Long fics :
Tomorrow's Fading Away, Oh Stay : prequel to Far Beyond the Woods of Dawn, featuring heavily Tsunade, Orochimaru, Hiruzen and the Senju clan. Written from the pov of Senju Kiyoko, my OC and daughter of Tobirama and Touka. Complete.
Far Beyond the Woods of Dawn : main fic. Features Tsunade, Shizune, Yagura, Kisame, and many other characters. Will eventually have the Akatsuki, Mikoto and Kushina as part of the main cast. Follows Senju Akemi, my OC and daughter of Kiyoko and Daichi. POV changes. Ongoing
But in this twilight, our choices seal our fate : technically the prequel to the prequel lmao. It's from the pov of Touka, and features heavily Hashirama, Tobirama, Butsuma, Mito and the Senju clan in general. First chapter is out. The outline is already complete.
One shots :
And all the lessons learned, Were they worth the ash from all the bridges burned? : Hashirama's dying thoughts.
A Thousand Cranes : Konan's backstory as told from her pov.
Curse Marks : completely different AU to the rest of my stuff. a What If SasuNeji one shot post 4th great shinobi war.
Hold Onto Me : Tobirama being a good dad, and a lesson that will shape Kiyoko's character and later choices.
Promise : Kakuzu attempts to stop Madara from attacking Konoha alone. KakuMada, one sided HashiMada, and lots of angst. It's a part of my AU and explains some of Kakuzu's character in Far Beyond the Woods of Dawn (as of today he hasn't appeared yet but he will soon).
you know you're gonna live through the rain : Nagato, Karin and Kushina prepare to travel to Uzushio for the first time.

Hi ! So glad I find your master worldbuilding mind!
Quick question, how do you think we went from a clan-based village to actual Konoha where several clans (Senju, Sarutobi?, Uchiha, Danzo clan? , Hatake if it's a clan) have disapear? Did the village care ou try to protect them? Did other clans are treathen by the possibilities to be let down?
Because you said that Tobirama trust Uchiha with police force but Sarutobi was obsessed by clan balance and all. I know Sarutobi is old, so a lot could have happening.
Any thought?
Hi! Okay so this ask is actually based on a slightly flawed premise (not your fault it's Kishi's worldbuilding again) in that we do not actually see a lot of "wiped out" clans. What we see is Kishi not bothering to flesh out the clans he has because what is attention span. For example; the Sarutobi are not wiped out! There is exactly one shot of the Sarutobi clan in the 4th war arc that is in both the manga and the anime (in the anime the shot is actually narrower so you can't see as many as in the manga shot) where a bunch of their jounin and chuunin members (like easily double digits, I forget the exact number but I wanna say around 20ish? With more implied to be off screen) breathe fire at the juubi in sync. And it is confirmed they are all Sarutobi. There's like one guy who's essentially like: COME ON GUYS LET'S SHOW THEM THE SARUTOBI CLAN KICKS ASS.
So the Sarutobi clan is actually a decent enough/healthy enough size, we just literally never hear or see it until that one single shot. So it's reasonable to assume most clans are healthy and protected by Konoha. This is kind of implicitly supported by the narrative too, because things like the Uchiha and Hatake and Senju being nearly extinct are things that people comment on and find noteworthy, which means it's *not* the norm.
As for how the three clans we know of being wiped out *got* wiped out, I think that is less the fault of Konoha itself (tho Hiruzen is directly at fault for allowing the Uchiha massacre thanks) and more a side effect of that transition from clan based society to village based society. Namely the multiple shinobi wars. As I mentioned in my economics rant, the shinobi wars were something entirely out of the league of clan wars back in the day in terms of scale and destruction, so clans that got hammered likely were ones either already on the small size (like the Hatake probably were) or ones that would have been intentionally targeted by the enemy out of fear (Senju and Uchiha). The sheer scale of the conflict and clashing powers would have decimated targeted clans, and the villages would have been unprepared for that kind of issue until it was too late. After that, the surviving members could have easily died out without having kids post war, or if they were female members in the case of, say, the Senju, they didn't die out but the *name* died out, because it's still traditional in Naruto world cultures for the woman to join the family of the man and not the other way around (with the exception of the Uchiha and other regularly manifesting kekkei genkai clans I imagine).
We don't see anything about the Shimura clan either way beyond Danzo, which is again a flaw in the kishi worldbuilding, so we don't know if he actually has a clan still running around, or if they were just a small clan that got hammered in the multiple shinobi wars. On that note you can apply this same worldbuilding problem to almost every other village in the show. Kumo, Iwa, and Suna all have characters who are implied to be from a clan or have kekkei genkai that appear to be hereditary but no clan is mentioned. So we just do not know if there IS a clan of say- people with hand mouths like Deidara, or if they are one-off manifestations of a kekkei genkai, or if they are survivors of other villages' clans that got hammered casualty-wise by the wars like the Senju and Hatake presumably were.
Logistically speaking it would be beneficial for the villages as a whole to do everything they could to keep their clans alive, since their clans are where their powerhouses tend to come from while civilian-born shinobi fill out the ranks with more mid-level shinobi. There would probably be incentives and benefits offered by the village for clan shinobi to marry and have kids that bear the clan name, etc etc. And clans that are still a healthy size work hard to keep it that way.
I hope that answered your question?

the way so many people talk about the manga in general... like. if you're not having fun you don't have to force yourself to talk about it.... there's criticism that's rooted in enthusiasm for the material and then there's constantly posting about how Not Engaged you are. like i respect the hater lifestyle but some people could perhaps. be more slothful about it. idk. that was so ironic and im sure gege really felt that negative energy. now say something beautiful and true
Yeah, I mean there's plenty to criticize in JJK, I talk about the stuff I don't like as well, but there's a difference between that and just constantly complaining every week how you don't like what's happening, you don't care about the characters, you might not even know the characters or remember what they are about (and that's not Gege's fault it's not that hard to keep up) or the major goals of the protagonists and antagonists. At that point, why even continue reading when you don't know or care about what's happening? What's left to enjoy? Just drop it and wait till it's over if you're curious about the ending instead of pushing yourself through something you don't like for the sake of having something to say. Just watch the anime or stick to HI and Shibuya if you like those parts more can't relate do something that's actually entertaining to you. These people clearly don't even read the chapters or just go by Myamura's quick summaries (that aren't even always correct) of the leaks.
The current plot of csm doesn't interest me either and the only character I really care about is Asa. It wasn't fun to read anymore, so I dropped it and maybe I'll read the rest whenever the series is over. Same with Naruto. I skipped basically all of the 4th Shinobi War arc until Madara showed up. Why would I waste my time raving about how much I don't like something, when I can spend it more productively. Not to mention that I don't think fans of the series would appreciate me constantly posting in the tags how not moved I am by current events in a story.

The true reason why Itachi was right/justified - The best answer
https://youtu.be/9vxHV5mg6JM - This is a video I also made on the subject that breaks it down even further and explains my points much more easily and I'd appreciate it if you watched and gave me some feed back on not only my argument but video production as well
BUT for the reddit short version. A few days ago I made a post that seemed to take off in the sub about Itachi and it didn't have anything to do with whether he was right or wrong in his decision in massacring his clan but unsurprisingly that's what it led to and the opinions like always are very mixed but people have extremely poor arguments on both sides and more often than not let their own world view and emotions come into their decision making when it should in fact be viewed from the not only the world the Naruto universe is, mainly Konoha, but also their world as a whole, also who Itachi and why he holds the views he does and ultimately why he did what he did that night.
There's this misconception that Itachi is stupid or that he made the wrong choice because he's blood related to his clan, that the clan is his family and no matter what the result is that he should stand with them and fight against Konoha and even worse there are people who believe that the Uchiha clan can even win that battle in the first place. First and foremost, even if Uchiha had a chance to rebel they would get completely annihilated by the rest of Konoha shinobi, there's just too much riding against them but that's not to say that Konoha wouldn't have taken any major damage to Konoha and their forces; facing the Uchiha clan would definitely be an hard battle but in the end they are one clan vs many other clans such as Hyuga, Aburame, Akimichi, Nara, etc and other notable shinobi from Konoha such as Kakashi, a Younger Hiruzen, Danzo, Guy, Asuma, Kurenai, etc; they're not winning that battle and it's foolish to think otherwise.
That's not the main point but that plays into the next point. It's not about winning the battle against Konoha for Itachi, It's about the damage and domino effect it would cause. As said in the story a civil war of that magnitude breaking out in the leaf would surely cause severe damage and a great amount of casualties to not only the leaf but non shinobi as well. That damage would be a cause for concern because other nations would take advantage of the instability within the Konoha and attack, potentially destroying Konoha entirely and that's a high possibility especially when you look at relations of other villages with Konoha, especially the Cloud Village who are almost rivaling Konoha in power and to add on to that Konoha and Cloud didn't have the best relations during the time frame pre-4th great shinobi war; considering they tried to kidnap Kushina and Hinata. During the Kidnapping of Hinata, her father actually killed the Cloud ninja which resulted in his brother sacrificing himself, so to say their relations weren't great would be an understatement.
Itachi also adopted the will of fire and being a part of the anbu held it to a deeper extent but he also craved for peace among all else in his village because of the 3rd great shinobi war he was exposed to at the age of 4. He never wanted to experience anything like that again, especially within his village, that could lead to an even greater conflict and war. Itachi loved his family but he also loved his village, the village is also Itachi's family, remembering Hiruzen said Itachi thought like a Hokage at the age of 7 and that's the Hokage's mentality. The Hokage also possess the will of fire being the leader of their village it's unsurprising.
What is the will of fire? The Will of Fire is the notion that one must sacrifice and endure, that's what it means to be a shinobi, and sacrifice no matter what it is, if it leads to the greater good of the village then it was worth. That is the Will of Fire . As Hashirama said after killing Madara he's willing to kill his friend, family and even his own child if it's for the greater good of the village. This is literally Itachi's mindset. He loves his family dearly and he also loves his village but he knows that the village is more than his family. The village is his family as well and a larger portion at that. The Hokage looks at the entire village as their family, there are several references to Itachi being Hokage like, by Hiruzen, Danzo, Hashirama, and Sasuke. Remember what Minato said (also an Hokage) "To forsake one's country and one's village is the same as forsaking one's child", He says this to a dying Kushina about Naruto after sacrificing his son's upbringing for what? THE VILLAGE.
It's because of Itachi's experiences that he is this way and being in the anbu made him adopt it the Will of Fire to a further extent, as we know the anbu pretty much radicalize the Will of Fire to the most extreme level and are willing to do ANYTHING for the village, especially the anbu that take orders from who? You guessed it. DANZO. Who gave Itachi that choice? DANZO. Danzo knew Itachi's heart, while he spoke to Itachi in a manipulative tone, everything Danzo said was in fact true. and his actions are justified because there's are the actions a shinobi is supposed to take. Starting from the very first Hokage. This is why he is praised by Hashirama for being a better shinobi than him. This is how the Naruto world is and how it this question should be looked at.
Thank you for coming to my ted talk.
youtube
I got even more in depth in my video and actually touch on the themes of morality and ethics and this is all from the view of the Naruto universe and not our own. I feel like it's the best explanation of Itachi because there's no personal biases and just straight facts, but as always when it comes to such a topic, I know answers vary but Im ready and willing to argue any point.

It’s past 1am but i need to say this . One of the things that stuck with me the most when reading Kakashi Hiden Lightning in the Frozen Sky is just how in many occasions kks’ thoughts were drawn towards Obito when facing death/thinking abt his life or his Hokage responsibilities:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The way he still thinks about him, still hears his voice, still asks for his approval/opinion when talking “in his heart”. Also, let’s not forget the book is set post 4th shinobi war and even after everything that happened there, and after all the truth that came out abt Obt, Kks still considers him his hero/someone to look up to….. Idk sometimes i think i forget just how much of an impact and how much of a strong grasp Obt still has on kks’ life even after his death. In this essay i will conclude that Kks is a grieving widow

Anymore amazing headcanons about rouge Obito and Rin who survives?
This is a continuation of this post.
*Rin would be confused, and asks Obito what he meant, and Obito then coldly tells her that he watched the one person who promised that he'd protect her thrust his Chidori into her chest, and since that day his life had been nothing but a living hell filled with lies and broken promises.
*Before Rin could say another word, Obito walks past her and look straight at Kakashi and Minato, then smirks at them and chuckles mockingly, asking him to not look at him like that. The guilt on Kakashi's face only made Obito want to rip his head off.
*Minato tells Obito that if he stops everything he's doing, he'll spare him from any punishments and crimes - and begs him to return. Obito then says that there is no crime in killing the ones who only cause misery to others in this hopeless world, so what crimes will he accuse him of?
*After some time of being unable to get through to Obito, Minato and Kakashi were ready to attack the Uchiha, only for Rin to run towards Obito and hug his back, holding him tightly, begging him not to leave them again - and she promises to love him and to always be there for him if he stays with her. She tells him that she knows that the Obito she knew is still there. Minato and Kakashi would be watching with a sad and torn expression.
*His expression cannot be seen given that his head lowers, but his rasp voice would carry the weight of a torn and pained emotion as he tells her, "Even after all this time you still believe in me... Even after all I've done you still kept your faith in me... You're truly one of a kind." He then breaks out of her hold, turns to her as he activates his Kamui, and tells her - "Everything's changed... my whole life changed, and there is no going back. However... one thing's for sure is that my love for you will never change, Rin."
*As he disappears, Rin falls to her knees and screams his name in grief, and then she swears that she will bring him back to her and that they'll be together.
*Rin becomes more determined to pursue him and find him. Time would pass. Rin would make it a habit to head towards the cemetery at night just to grieve the old Obito; and she'd be talking to Isobu about her feelings, who tries to comfort her and talk her out of pursuing him because he's a dangerous man that might change his mind about stealing him (Isobu) away from her. Rin remains to be torn, but then Isobu warns her about a presence watching her - and Rin gasps to find a figure lurking in the shadows.
*The figure steps out, and it's Obito, this time wearing a mask. He tells her that ever since the last time they saw each other, he couldn't stop thinking about her. The next thing he knew, he found himself looking for her even when he tried to stop himself. Rin asks what did he want, and Obito said that he just wanted to see her again.
*She asks him again, why is he doing all of this - and Obito says he will show her why, and reaches out his hand for her to take. Rin is hesitant, but she takes his hand and he teleports them to the field outside the Mountain's Graveyard, and then faces her, and shows her what went down through a genjutsu.
*Here, it is revealed that Madara implanted a Cursed Seal in Obito's heart - a seal that Obito cannot escape from, and that's why he has to do what he has to do while delaying the plans for her sake only. He tells her that the only way to stop him is through a war, and this foreshadows the upcoming 4th shinobi world war.
*Rin finally understands him, and realizes how much her "death" affected him, and she asks him for one favor - the favor is to see each other before the war is declared. To let her be with him a little more before they have to face each other in a battlefield.
*Obito hesitantly agrees - and they secretly meet each other; and this is where their romance starts to grow. Only the moon knows their secret, forbidden meetings at night and the stolen, passionate kisses as they're hidden within the forests or in beautiful waterscapes that is not inhabited by anyone. He knows of her love for waterfalls, seas, lakes - and so he takes her to those places.
*After a while of meeting each other, the day before Obito has to declare war, they end up making love in a beautiful grotto for the first time - this was a moment of complete vulnerability. Where she sees the real Obito at long last after years of suppression. Obito tells her that he loves her so much and dreams of a different time. Rin promises him that she will make it all happen.
*The significance of their romance is what makes Obito change his mind about accomplishing the Infinite Tsukuyomi, but the war needs to happen first because he has a special plan of his own.
*Skipping to the 4th shinobi world war, Obito fights Kakashi, Gai and Minato and everyone - and eventually has his battle with Kakashi in the Kamui dimension where Kakashi destroys the cursed seal.
*Now that the cursed seal is broken, Obito decides that this is his chance to fight off Madara - and so Obito takes the chance to join the Allied Forces to seal away the resurrected Madara, and to free the other bijuus that he stole with the Akatsuki. A long, hard battle ensues given that Madara is a lot more powerful than Obito - yet Obito is determined to finally free himself and become no one but Obito Uchiha.
*Hashirama decides to fight with Madara while Obito focuses on the other bijuu. After a long hard battle of everyone fighting against Madara and freeing the Tailed Beasts - the Allied Forces win. Madara and every other resurrected person is sealed away, and the bijuu are finally free.
*The question is now what to do with Obito, should he be punished or pardoned? Rin says that if it weren't for Obito then they would've all been destroyed, and Minato says that he will take care of Obito.
*Like how Sasuke got pardoned in the show, the same thing happens with Obito - and he decides to take a redemption trip where he gets to rediscover himself. Rin without a doubt joins him, and they have a nice journey together before returning to Konoha and getting married.
Annnnd guess what?
*He gets chosen to be a candidate for Hokage. Minato is the one that put down his and Kakashi's name as the next candidate much to the shock of the Council and Daimyo. Kakashi turns down the offer because he does not believe he can handle such a job, and that Obito should have a chance to fulfill the dream he never got to fulfill. They all resist because of his past - however, Minato says that Obito has the leadership skills needed to run the village. A lot of negotiations were made but eventually, they decided to elect Obito as the next Hokage!
*Obito becomes the Hokage and uses his leadership skills to run the village, eventually achieving the peace that he and Rin always dreamed of.
*As he and his beautiful wife Rin stand on top of his carved face on Hokage Rock with the wind blowing and caressing her long hair, he tells her, "You've kept your promise to me. You stayed by my side and took care of me - and I ended up saving the world." Rin leans her head against his shoulder and says, "Didn't I say that I'll always be watching you?"
The end.

Just saw your post about Kakashi secretly resenting Gai for sacrificing himself in the 4th war. If I may throw an idea your way (because I adore your kakagai content!):
Maybe you've addressed this arc in the past before and i haven't seen it but. I actually think a similar conflict would've come up much earlier in the series- namely when Gai vowed to kill himself if Lee died from surgery during the chunin exams.
It's been awhile since I've watched so I can't remember if Kakashi was even aware of Gai making this vow in the first place. But if he knew about it...
Wow. WOW. Imagine how freaking betrayed Kakashi must've felt, having Gai practically force himself into Kakashi's life throughout their adolescent years. To have opened his heart to another person despite the endless losses he'd suffered only for Gai to (potentially) throw his life away. Not in battle as a shinobi, not to save a comrade.. just. To honour his student. And this is not even touching upon the potential parallels that can be drawn between Gai and Sakumo in this scenario.... big yikes.
I think it would've been an absolutely HUGE turning point in their relationship. I'd really love to hear any additional thoughts you might have on it, if you're interested. No pressure to respond though, haha. :)
OW!!!!!!!!!!!! OW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you, I needed to cry today.
First up - you are 1000% correct. Gai's plan to commit suicide if Lee dies... buddy, that's not okay. I know he and Lee are supposed to be like... this jokey exaggerated spoof of dedicated Master & Student who are way too fired-up and passionate about everything, but c'mon, holy shit.
Gai has such an interesting relationship with self-sacrifice as a form of nobility and mAsCuLiNiTy and devotion - whereas for Kakashi, anyone else's self-sacrifice is a source of trauma and horror. But his own? He's more than willing. He's still wayyyyyyyyy too eager for die for others, even at the start of Naruto and throughout Shippuden.
Yet there's something numb about his sacrifices. From pleading with the kids to run away and leave him at Zabuza's mercy, to his literal death in the Pain arc, to him throwing himself in front of Sasuke to take Kaguya's attack without any hesitation... It's not big and dramatic and showy. It's in-the-moment choices, quick and decisive. I get the sense he's almost always ready to die for someone else - perhaps as an immensely fucked-up way of assuaging his own survivor's guilt, or because he still genuinely sees himself as someone who has inherently less human worth than everyone around him.
In contrast, Gai greatly idolises his father, to an unhealthy degree when it comes to following in his footsteps. For him, the ultimate display of love is dying for someone else - a philosophy that is equally as fucked up, in its own unique way.
But when we consider Kakashi and Gai's differing yet similar relationships to the concept of suicide and sacrifice... Isn't that what it all boils down to? Their fathers?
You have Sakumo, whose son found him slumped over, drenched in blood and moonlight, slain by his own hands because he couldn't face living anymore. And Dai, who went out in a brilliant conflagration, saving his son and proving all those who looked down on him wrong.
Doesn't that pose some interesting questions?
Is there ever a 'good' way to die? Is any form of suicide inherently less tragic, more noble? Or are they all just as messed up as each other?
Maybe it doesn't matter. After all, those are questions that can only be answered by the people left behind.
But I like the idea that out of those people left behind... Gai sees a difference there. Kakashi doesn't.
Which is to say: I cannot imagine Kakashi ever being cool with Gai offing himself if Lee hadn't survived his operation. I think he'd be pretty fucking worried about Gai - and even more so when he reaises Gai isn't suffering with depression or self-loathing or a lack of self-worth (all of which Kakashi is intimately familiar with, and could empathise with and understand). He just... thinks suicide is an ay-okay way of showing your love for someone. And that uncorks a whole barrel of trauma for Kakashi to deal with.
Did Gai not want him to kill himself, when he was in ANBU? Or did he just not want Kakashi to kill himself without a 'good purpose'?
I want Kakashi to ask that point-blank to Gai's face - and, perhaps, for that to be the point that makes Gai question his own convictions about what entails an acceptable reason to die.
