Sometimes fic inspires me, and I just want dark, depressing fic.
Like. I don't even know what version of canon. IDW? Prime? Probably more Prime? I'd say it's almost like SG?
Anyway. Orion Pax becomes Prime, and unfortunately, even if he once had noble intentions, he ends up as corrupt as the other Primes. Perhaps there's a rot in the Matrix. Perhaps bots just can't be trusted with that sort of power.
He does have a bodyguard who is always one step behind him, as quiet and still as a statue. He is, however, quite recognizable. It's Megatron, former Champion of the Pits.
This Megatron, however, if he ever protested against the corruption in government, he doesn't anymore.
Instead, he serves the mech he loves, whom he gave his spark to, who kisses him in private but ignores him in public.
A low-caste labourer, even one as famous as Megatron, can never be allowed to sully the Prime.
When he's alone, when Optimus dismisses him, he sometimes raises a servo to his chestplate and thinks about the small, flickering spark orbiting his own.
Would Optimus acknowledge their sparkling? Send it away so as not to tarnish his image? Once Megatron was certain he knew the answer, but times have changed. They have changed.
But hope is the last thing that dies in a mech.
So a continuity blend, okay okay
Ohhhoh now this? This could go in so many interesting directions based on what you use it for
I have two answers to this
Answer one: the unique scenario
So I exactly imagined the shattered glass designs (or at least Megatron's shattered glass design), and a blend of the backstories for SG, TFP, and IDW.
Maybe more heavily Aligned leaning on Optimus's backstory and his connection with Megs, more IDW leaning when it comes to the worldbuilding of the setting itself (because I feel like adding the IDW flavor of the Senate, Functionists, and all the nasties going on in the background would be interesting), aaaand pretty split down the middle of SG/TFP/MTMTE when it comes to Megatron himself because I've thought way so much about blending the backstory we see for him in mtmte with the one we know he has in aligned.... But also because I mostly imagined his shattered glass design here.
Answer two: the answer based on a pre-existing fic
Remember this? I do!
My second thought upon seeing the word bodyguard was "wait like in [The path less travelled by was paved with good intentions]?"
Let's just say your ask sounded to me like a possible future event along that "bad timeline" where Megs didn't step away.

Challenge #03449-I161: What a Mix-up!
A person who recently joined Pax Humanis is a chemistry expert, a poisoner. But also uses their chemistry knowledge, and their lab, to make antidotes for poisons. A great combo to save a life of someone who was poisoned, while still taking out a target who was found to be a slave-trader trying to kidnap Alliance Citizens. -- Anon Guest
A common mistake in the Edge Territories is thinking that the Diminished Responsibility bracelets and anklets are there strictly to tell people that those wearing them are in need of help through their everyday life. They're also there to let Security know when and if a wearer has entered dangerous territory.
Space is not safe. Neither are the habitats within. Dangers acceptable for a trained adult are never acceptable for the small or vulnerable.
Another little-known fact about the Diminished Responsibility jewelry is that those who wear them are not always helpless. This band of space pirates has made the mistake of picking on the wrong educational transit vehicle.

it's hilarious that a few days after i finished babel, i went to history class and our topic visited colonization, and my (white) professor said that teaching history within education is politicized and his example was how slavery and colonization are taught in most history classes as europe's invasion of other continents and enslavement of the native peoples there, thus racializing the issue of the slave trade. he asked why don't history classes focus on the fact slavery was a practice found in many cultures other than europe and that europeans also enslaved other europeans, which is a fair point... however he commented that "the version of history that's taught is a way for [european nations] to pay reparations i suppose" and it's an example how education distorts historical events through the lens of "modern politics".
and i'm sitting there like... colonization will always be tied to race. whether we like it or not, that period of history had forcibly tied race to colony, and we feel those effects to this day. that is why it's still important to talk about it. we breathe the consequences, live the consequences, and see the consequences of colony. we are products of a bloody, inequal, and unfair history that still poisons our lives today.
along the lecture, i interjected that any and all forms of colonization was bad and he claimed he could think of pax romana as one good form of colonization. the roman empire's golden age was only golden if you were roman, sir.
as an asian in academia studying outside her home country, i have to cosplay babel every day and i am already so tired. I've been missing my professors back home because they spoke against colony and oppression with fire and brimstone and passion and here they turn away from the blood empire or they see little wrong with it.
dark academia is aptly named because by god is it fucking dark here.

AHHHH, I KEEP THINKING ABOUT IT!
Okay, I think the handling TFP/Aligned Orion Pax was weakened by the background inconsistencies that were supposed to ground his personality and motivations.
And that's why Orion Pax can come off as an asshole, weirdly tone deaf, or very naive, yet deep inside the revolution as a competent head.
It's as if the writers took so many cool things to prop up the guy, but let it compete with "How Orion Pax and Megatronus were Different" and made a mess.
And, depending on your view, it either was half-heartedly addressed or done masterfully.
Saltysaltdog did a really great analysis on Megatron's feelings of betrayal and humiliation of letting Orion Pax so close to everything, and it's found here: click
The biggest gripe I have with the whole thing with the characterization of Orion Pax is twofold: 1) the writers didn't leverage Orion Pax's unique, and let's be honest, precarious position, and 2) didn't expand deeper the fundamental differences that essentially broke Orion Pax and Megatron apart and started that catastrophic civil war.
The setup is there. Megatron and Orion Pax are distorted mirrors of each other. The major differences are driven by what was socially appropriate for them to consider as pathways.
The Cybertron that came to was deep in the grips of a well-established and well-entrenched caste system. In that kind of society, it isn't just money that decrees social mobility. The very hierarchy of the society is driven by cultural and religious norms on the "worthiness" of each group at various set levels. And from that "worth," it not only dictates the rights of the members in a caste but decrees the appropriate behavior and outlets as well as dictates how relationships between members of different castes are maintained.
So Orion Pax is a giant "FUCK YOU" to all of that. His very presence would have pissed off so many parties that isn't funny.
As in, I honestly believe he's alive because his initial seclusion from civilization had given him key skills and behaviors that saved his ass and Alpha Trion's personal care.
Yes. There would have been bullying. Yes. There would be complete resentment and hatred. Yes. There would have been social orstracism from his own colleagues.
Even individuals who are lumped with him as "caste climbers" or just sympathetic/pitying would have stayed away by the dangers of their own reputation being tainted.
"You're nothing but a bauble and an ornament. Merely a prized pet for Alpha Trion. One day, he'll lose interest, and that day, you'll go back to where you belong."
Orion Pax flaunted all the appropriate ways of inclusion to their occupation and way of life. He doesn't have a frame or a specialized ability that's related to information. He has no achievements, no accolades, and doesn't even have a sponsored education from a prestigious university or any useful connections.
Orion Pax is both an outsider and a representative. He needs to be extremely mindful of everything: his words, his tone, his body language, his own work... are all subject to scrutiny.
(And it either shows his sneakiness that he's able to shake off all eyes when he descends down to the gladiatorial game, his ability to lie by omission or obfuscation, or his colleagues relief with him out of sight.)
That very grey area would have left deep impressions on him. It would explain his passiveness, the perceptiveness, the way he speaks, and the careful plans he quietly does by the sides in a need-to-know basis.
Violence can come in many forms. And in a world where your worth is tied to your caste, then Orion Pax should be deeply familiar with the various ways it can be soft, sweet, and utterly insidious. A velvet wrapped steel glove. A dagger from the shadows. A poisonous treat. A deal of bad faith. A betrayl from a kind face.
Remember: Ratchet went through the proper channels and with the appropriate frame to match his function. Of course, he has that shield against so many grievances and injustices as well as many prejudices that color his perceptions. Look at the differences in how he recounts the brotherhood between Megatronus and Orion Pax and the outcome of before the High Council.
Orion is both given privileges that Megatron and his cohort wouldn't have, but it's also a noose around his neck. He is severely handicapped by Alpha Trion's deliberate meddling to keep the reincarnated Thirteen/the Matrix's newest Prime nearby and simultaneously well-informed and in the dark.
Unlike the miner-turned-gladiator, Orion doesn't have that option for bloodsport. His too low-caste for the avenues of security by the high-caste, but too high-caste to partake in the low-caste culture. It's acceptable for them to be physically violent, to be in bloodsport, to solve their grievances with their fists.
It's vastly different to the complete ruination of an individual's life that Orion got thrown into the deep end: reputation, finances, personal and professional relationships, involuntary reformat... The power games of the higher-castes are completely different ball-game.
He's stuck with his own thoughts because there's no way he can voice doubts to Alpha Trion (the mech who gave him such a position, advice, and unrestricted access to the archives) nor to his colleagues (who either hate his guts or would sell the information because information is power and the Hall of Records is a major point of power).
Look at the people he attaches himself to. They're rather straightforward: Megatronus, Ratchet, Jazz, Bumblebee, Arcee...
He's drawn to their ease yet still holds himself in a certain degree of formality because that's how he managed to survive in a snake pit. And that's too deeply ingrained into him at that point. People read that negatively. Megatron once saw that but didn't understand what it truly meant. Megatron saw his willingness to give up so much and his privileges, but he didn't understand the extent of the scars that Orion mentally and emotionally has.
Ratchet would be one of the few that really perceives that. The medic may not fully understands but he keeps trying, and the war eventually breaks down the barriers.
It would make so much sense about his strange notions, why he doesn't allow Megatron explore "his" world, why he keeps everything to himself, why he relatively comfortable with others outside his "caste."
This guy would literally ruminate the entire work day (both legal and subversive) until he fell asleep after rechecking the locks 27365837 times so an assassin or unfortunate "pet" didn't come into his room.
This could explain why he basically highjacked the damn meeting. Orion Pax has unrestricted access to many records. He knows his history. He can read between the lines. His A-game was on, especially in this endeavor.
Was it a well-intentioned plan to draw fire to himself because he had Alpha Trion’s strange degree of protection compared to the others? Was it panic because he knew all the ways to kill a person until death was mercy? Was it Plan 27-b because he thought all the ways it could go wrong? Was it his well-honed instinct demanding him to divert and pacify, but careful with the words (soft and fluttering with hidden danger with what is unsaid) to keep avenues open because to have the Primacy bestowed upon them would be an honor and completely legitimized the movement? Did he see the noose closing around Megatron and couldn't bear witness to have it strangle him, too?!
There's so much going on here. It all hinges on cultural absorption and clashes and the meddling by an ancient fart of an oracle, and it's just so tragically fascinating.

Definitely make it a series with the Matrix and it's shenanigans! And can we get a scenario or situation where we see what it says to comfort Oppy?
Matrix comforting Optimus? How could I ever refuse such a lovely request?
Musings of the Matrix
The Matrix is sentient and has watched for millennia. It has some opinions and ways of going about things, including how it takes care of its Prime.
Comforting a Prime
The Matrix loves its Prime and who gladly fight to protect him. Its Prime is perfect, the chosen meant to restore the frame of their maker. But where the Matrix is stoic and ever focused on their mission, Optimus gets distracted, he feels, he suffers, he experiences joy. It is this that makes Optimus so perfect as a leader. He can understand his people and offer them compassion where previous steward Primes only stood with distain etched onto their faces. But it is also this emotional capability that can lead Optimus to fall to his mortal emotions.
The Matrix must keep its Prime focused and active. It will do what it must to help its perfect Prime move forward.
In the beginning its Prime was always so very angry. Optimus hated the war, he hated what Megatron had become, and he hated the fall of their world above all else. It was good in the Matrix's sight that its Prime's anger was directed at the woes of their reality instead of the petty conflicts that its previous wielders spent their time brooding over. Even still, Optimus's anger needed to be controlled. Too much wrath would lead to mistakes, and mistakes to failure.
As such whenever Optimus's anger grew too great, the Matrix did what it could to return Optimus to rationality. However there were some instances where even the power the Matrix held was nearly overshadowed by righteous fury. One such instance was after the battle of Tyger Pax where their pure one, the sparkling, lost his voice to impure one. That day both the Matrix and Optimus momentarily lost control in favor of wrath.
Optimus: He will not touch Bumblebee ever again...
The Matrix: No, the impure one will never touch our charge again so long as we function.
Optimus: He must be punished for this!
The Matrix: Direct your anger, know him for what he is. He has proven unworthy. He must die.
Optimus: No... I can't do that.
The Matrix: You can and you will vessel. The impure one poisons our maker, he scars the shell of our god, and he kills the fellow creations of Primus. Does this not anger you?
Optimus: ... He was a good mech once.
The Matrix: Once. He was pure once. He may have even made a good steward Prime, but no longer. We know this, you know this. He must die.
After that day the Matrix knew that Megatron needed to die. It usually was against needless bloodshed, but in this instance, the Matrix saw fit to comfort its Prime with the reality. The Matrix took responsibility from its Prime. It knew that Optimus wouldn't raise his blade against Megatron with the intent to kill, so the Matrix whispered. It told its Prime what was right and when it came time to fight, the Matrix dulled Optimus's awareness and took partial control. It knew its Prime wouldn't fight, but it most certainly would. So when needed, Optimus kept their frame moving and the Matrix directed their strikes and made sure to constantly assure its Prime that it was the one fighting to kill, not Optimus.
Optimus: I almost killed him. I almost-
The Matrix: We almost killed him. You did nothing vessel.
Optimus: But it was my frame.
The Matrix: And we took control of it from you. We are guilty, you are pure. Do not concern yourself vessel.
The Matrix's whispered words of comfort meant little to its Prime, and more often than not its Prime still took everything personally. Optimus was a Prime that should have come during a time of peace, he would have been great. But he was chosen during a time of war, and for that, the Matrix often lamented.
Of course it was not just anger which the Matrix did its best to comfort its Prime when Optimus experienced it. Optimus's sorrows were just as powerful and often required far more of the Matrix's efforts to tend to. It couldn't allow its Prime to fall to trauma or fully embrace the horrors of war, so it was forced to do all it could to suppress such emotions.
Optimus wept for all the fallen, every lost soldier, every burned city, and every hope extinguished. He was too good, a perfect Prime for a time of peace but too kind for a world of war. The Matrix couldn't allow its Prime's purity to be sullied, so it often took the weight of Optimus's sorrow upon itself. His grief was allowed to be as it pushed Optimus forward, but the emotion was dulled. Lamentation for all that was lost was also allowed to remain as it reminded Optimus what they were fighting for. But the nightmares and the trauma of loss were things the Matrix could not allow to be. Its Prime needed to be strong.
The Matrix: *viewing Optimus's nightmare* Hush now chosen. It is not real.
Optimus: I failed... this is my fault.
The Matrix: *slowly feeding Optimus old memories it had stored away* This was never your fault. This woe would have come to be regardless of what you did.
Optimus: I don't understand.
The Matrix: You don't need to vessel. Rest.
Many a night the Matrix shut down Optimus's nightmares before they could even begin and locked them away, instead feeding Optimus old memories within it from happier times. Its Prime was always left groggy after such incidents, but the Matrix preferred its Prime a little out of it over being depressed. Ratchet also helped in this department, for which the Matrix begrudgingly sometimes allowed its iron grip over its vessel's previous personality to slip as a reward for the medic and as a way to allow its Prime to let go of emotions.
Ratchet: Orion, what happened to you? What happened to my archivist?
The Matrix: *begrudgingly releasing part of its hold over Optimus* Very well healer. Calm our chosen and put him back together, but know he belongs to us.
Optimus: Ratchet...
Ratchet: I'm here Orion, its going to be alright.
Ratchet and the Matrix were not on good terms, but both knew that Optimus needed them and so neither tried to remove the other from Optimus's life. The Prime was so very fragile beneath his armor and the veil the Matrix threw over him. He was so kind, so loving, so very curious and hopeful. He didn't deserve to live during the war of madness, but it was reality, and so the Matrix did all it could to preserve his innocence.
This included eliminating Optimus's fears as much as it could.
It allowed Optimus to feel fear for their people, although it was more of a concern for their future above all else. It allowed Optimus to feel fear for his loved ones, more so for his own sanity than anything else. But it did not let its Prime fear for battle or for war, its Prime couldn't afford to be fearful.
And so when it came time for battle, the Matrix took Optimus's fear and warped it into determination and stoic resolve. Optimus felt no fear, not while the Matrix watched over him. It did this for two reasons, one of which was to keep its soft-spoken bearer from falling to terror at a crucial moment. The second reason was of course to inspire loyalty in the Autobots and fear in the enemy. A Prime who didn't stop, a Prime who didn't hesitate, and a Prime who willingly marched through fire and pain to do what must be done was a symbol of perfection. He was what the Autobots needed and what the Decepticons despised.
Optimus: They have seeker regiments and a field filled with mines. How am I supposed to get through that?
The Matrix: Do not fear vessel. You are blessed, a creation of our god. You will not falter, not when so many need you.
Optimus: I can't falter... can I?
The Matrix: *suppressing Optimus's fear* No, you cannot.
Optimus: I understand. I will do what is required of me.
The Matrix: As you should vessel.
The Matrix kept its Prime moving, its kept its Prime pure, and it ensured its Prime never faltered. This is what it did more than anything else, all for the sake of their people. But there was one thing it did only out of love.
It hated seeing its Prime in pain and agony. It hated watching Optimus suffer for things he should have never endured in the first place. So in those instances where its Prime was in agony, physical or mental, it took on shape and did what it could to give Optimus even the smallest of comforts.
On the battlefield when he lay bleeding out from countless wounds while waiting for medical attention, the Matrix took on the voice of those Optimus loved to push him to his pedes and move him forward. When Optimus could hardly recharge because of aching joints and healing wounds, the Matrix sang using the voices of those it had been carried by in times long past, singing songs from long forgotten days. It wasn't perfect, but it helped its vessel rest easier. And when Optimus wept for his losses and the Matrix could do little to suppress it due to its severity, it instead sent pulses of love through Optimus. It reminded its Prime that it was there, that if nothing else, it would always be there.
It did what it could for its precious Prime. It wasn't sure if it was enough, but it helped and that was at least a small comfort.

Cut for insanely long vent/rant and also questioning my place in the twomp fandom ( if u wanna skip 2 that go 2 the green part)
I feel like I haven't made a big enough contribution to the twomp fandom. Like I get that I am certainly not 'celeb level' famous like an, pax or macha. And I'm not asking to be! But it seems like I used to be mentioned every once in a while in twomp posts, and now my twomp posts are being reblogged more often, but other than that nobody really interacts with me... Idk I feel like I'm being selfish, but I've been at Tumblr since April of 2023 and I don't really have a place in the twomp fandom yet,, do I just have to make more posts? When do i get to be 'that person that is known for that'..?
And how do I change that? How do I make a contribution to the fandom? How do I get noticed? I'm not looking to cause any trouble, I don't want stigma..
I'm not asking for that much honestly.. am I? But I just want to have a place in the fandom, it's not the same if i'm just mindlessly posting about twomp, given attention (likes, reblogs, replies etc.) and then ignored. Have I not made a big enough contribution to the fandom to have a place in it? Am I really that forgettable?
Any twomp posts that I've made that have gotten 'famous' are just screenshots. Is that really all of my worth in the fandom.. screenshots? Usually I'm fine with just being a lurker in fandoms, but this is the only fandom I feel like I've made a contribution to and yet.. it's not much of a contribution..is it?
I see talented people post beautiful (and certainly better) fanart and I question if my art will ever be enough to be noticed like theirs is. I don't want to bring them down or anything, no, there are tons of underrated artists here that deserve more attention because they are also trying to make a contribution like me!
And yet, I'm also questioning my place in the fandom. Labratgurlz is on break from the fandom because of twompcord (and other drama), I'm in the server but don't know what's going on but I'm too scared to find out. The recent drama about meat man's user, the mpreg, (Is wide billy considered a controversial thing in the fandom?).. I look at my "contribution" and the fandom and I think: ' is it really worth it to keep going, and keep enjoying this? I am not acknowledged so it's not like anyone will notice my disappearance..." I feel like in a month or 2 the fandom will start being toxic and it would be better if I just left. But I'm too invested now. I started an art challenge and a fanfic and by god am I going to finish them. But it also feels like the fandom is slowly poisoning itself.
I feel selfish for asking to receive attention, in a pathetic post like this, but. Please interact with me, please tell me that I've done good enough and that I've made a good enough contribution to the fandom. Don't do it out of pity if, but- actually, if anyone were to praise me, not out of pity, they would have already done it. Oh god I'm spiralling into a hole of madness.

Assorted light bringer predictions, just to see how wrong I am later
Pax has the minds eye (or some version of it). He is simply Too Smart, and he fought the obsidians with his eyes closed just like Lysander does in the desert. The secret to the minds eye is probably in Octavias vault, which we know Virginia has access to, and this would fit with her saying she raised him to be as much an ally as a son
Alternatively: the minds eye is somehow related to the figment parasite. Either the parasite is attempting to recreate the minds eye, or Lysander has a parasite himself and doesn’t know it
Oculus is an attempt to create a utopia outside of color—this is where Mickey has been for the last two books, creating an entire new species. By the end of red god, volga, lyria, and kavax will rule over it, fulfilling this line of ozgards prophecy:
Tumblr media
Diomedes and his pink lover are working with Cassius/the reformers/possible sons of ares remnant. Honestly this is so widely theorized that it almost feels like it’s already canon
Diomedes’ lover is Evey. I remember seeing a theory about this years ago, shortly after iron gold came out, but I don’t remember where anymore. It was very compelling and it wormed its way into my psyche like the figment forcing itself up lyrias nose.
Lysander kills atalantia for killing his parents. Yes I know he’s awful and he needs to lose, but everyone deserves to kill the person that groomed them as a child so he gets to have this one win as a treat
Related: lysanders mommy issues and oedipus complex continue to get an uncomfortable amount of page time
Sevro comes back with his brain all scrambled. Ideally, for comedy purposes, he comes back a total Normie, and everyone’s just like eww put him back and it causes zero conflict. More realistically, this is the most heart shattering thing to happen in the whole series and part of the reason people with arcs are crying
A Big 5 (Darrow, mustang, sevro, Cassius, victra) death. It’s a miracle these OGs have made it this far, one of them has to be toast. My money would be on Cassius or sevro. Could also be the reason people with arcs are crying.
Volga Lyria lesbianism
Mustang and Darrow are kept apart for ANOTHER book because Pierce hates us and wants us to suffer
Victras mental health is at an all time low (I’m worried about her, can she please have an easy time just this once?) and it becomes a liability
Volsung fa reaps the consequences of eating the heart of his daughter who was suffering from a dna specific poison and dies without Volga having to face him (pls? She’s too sweet don’t make her be in the same room as that freak)
Alternatively, volsung fa faces no consequences from the above and this is our clue that he’s not actually sefi and ragnars father and is in fact some carved monstrosity
The ascomanni continue to give me the heebie jeebies
Rim politics that make Darrow want to rip his hair out (I’m with you buddy)
Darrow Cassius side quest? Pls?
The abomination runs rampant on Luna but it’s like in the background? Mustangs like yeah we’ll get to it eventually there’s other shit happening
And lastly: I am emotionally destroyed for 5-10 business days after finishing

Ulysses is an absolutely underrated character and I will die on this hill
First off, I absolutely love the way that the game slowly drip feeds you information about him. Your first hint something happened BEFORE Benny shooting you in the head is Jonathan Nash telling you the original courier saw your name on the delivery and backed out which not only implies they knew something was going on with the platinum chip but also has something against you. Then in Dead Money, you get a few more hints from Christine and then more in Old World Blues and the game has set up as a sort of mirror of you.
You walk the lonesome road, slowly prodding him for information and finding discarded journal entries that reveal his trauma at the hands of the Legion. You, for once, get to SEE the horrible impact the Legion has, completely eradicating tribal culture to form a "Pax Romana." He was completely uprooted from his home and his tribe, The Twisted Hairs, are gone.
Working as a Frumentari, he began work with The White Legs, teaching them how to use weapondry and tactics. They began to revere him so much that they began wearing their hair in dreads like him. This disgusted him, the dreads had very profound cultural meaning to The Twisted Hairs, the knots telling a story and now here was another tribe appropriating its look without knowing its significance, a hollow disrespectful imitation.
Disillusioned with the Legion, he began to walk, eventually finding Hopetown. A settlement free of both NCR and Legion, a completely new community free from the corruption of the old world. It wasn't long until the BEAR AND THE BULL found it however, and they began to both move in. This culminated with the NCR sending a courier to deliver a strange device bearing similar to the markings found in Hopeville, resulting in the detonation of the underground warheads destroying hopeville and creating the divide.
The most common complaint I hear about him is "why is he mad at me for delivering a package?" but take a moment to really think about your role in the game. The choices you make have consequences, for better or for worse, knowing or unknowing. THE COURIER decided to assist the NCR in making a trek they likely wouldn't have been able to do otherwise. THE COURIER made the decision to help with meddling in things that should be left alone.
And in doing so, the courier not only acted as an agent of one of the poisons plaguing the mojave, but destroyed what was, in Ulysses's eyes, the last hope of freedom from both The NCR and The Legion, and for the second time, a place that he called home was taken from him.
Now think about the gameplay of Lonesome Road. Unlike the other DLCs you are not stuck in it. You are allowed to turn around and leave at any moment. YOU decide to follow the invitation. YOU decide to walk the Lonesome Road. YOU, once again, mess with extremely dangerous old world tech. YOU pull the lever that ends up launching a nuke and creating The Couriers Mile. That may not have been your intention, but once again, YOU did actions that have consequences.
Then once you meet him, YOU are left to decide how you deal with him. Through diplomacy or brute strength. Either way, you close the book on a long story of trauma and are handed the fate of his plan to do with as you please.
In a way, I think of him as a sort of mirror to the player character. He's walked many of the same roads you have, seen the same sights you have. For someone playing blind, they might start following the "Good option" of the NCR but quickly get disillusioned with it after seeing its many failings and decide to strike out your own path, much like he did with The Legion. His quest for revenge sets him on a path that would shape the mojave to his choosing, just like yours did. He is your shadow.
